Let’s start with the distance between Orlando and Tampa. Assuming you take the most direct route, it’s about 84.2 miles or 135.5 kilometers to get between the two cities.

It’s a lot closer than people imagine as the two look relatively far apart when you look on a map of Florida.

The drive is a pretty easy and straightforward one, and it’s more or less all highway to get to Tampa.

Whether you’re heading to Tampa to catch a game of baseball, or maybe even take a Tampa dolphin tour , you’ll want to get there as quickly as possible, right?

Obviously, the length of time it takes to drive from Orlando to Tampa depends on traffic, time of day, etc., etc., but generally speaking, it usually takes around 1 hour and a half to do the drive.

Or 1 hour 30 minutes, or 90 minutes if you prefer to measure it that way. That’s just the length of a soccer game to do the Orlando to Tampa drive.

The most direct route for driving between Orlando and Tampa is the I-4, which is an interstate highway. By the way, Florida isn’t a country , it’s a state. So many people get that wrong believe it or not.

Highways tend to have a reputation for being quite boring, but as you get close to Tampa, you begin to get amazing views over the city’s skyline like you can see at the top of this post, and also some pretty cool views over the iconic Tampa Bay.

In today’s world, it’s pretty easy to just get directions from Google Maps for the drive, but if you prefer to be old school, here’s the route in writing.

• Get on the I-4 express
• Take the I-4 W towards Tampa
• Take exist 8 towards FL-60 / Kennedy Boulevard / Downtown East
• Yay! You’ve arrived in Tampa

Orlando to Tampa Drive Stops

There are lots of places to stop throughout the Orlando to Tampa drive, ranging from cities to small towns and just a simple stop for a bite to eat.

Personally, every time I drive from Orlando to Tampa, we stop at a Bob Evans for a tasty breakfast – we normally drive in the morning time. There are lots of great places to get pancakes for breakfast but I have to say, Bob Evans is up there with iHop!

Of course, there are plenty of McDonalds, steakhouses, bars and other food options to stop at. It’s an 80+ mile drive so your options are more or less endless.

If you want to be smart about it, Magic Kingdom, Universal Studios and Wild Florida are between Orlando and Tampa, meaning you can have a normal day at the parks but simply head to Tampa instead of Orlando at the end of the day.

Otherwise, some of the most popular places to stop off include Lakeland, Winterhaven and Polk City , which is almost directly in the middle. Each of these places offer unique things to do, and are somewhere nice to visit off-the-beaten track in Florida.

Orlando to Tampa Drive Tips

As with any drive of decent length, there are some things worth knowing before setting out and driving for yourself. So here are my 5 top tips for an Orlando to Tampa drive.

• Avoid rush hour: Because the drive mainly involves being on the interstate highway, it can get pretty busy during rush hour. Avoid driving early in the morning or in the late afternoon to early evening so you don’t get stuck in traffic. It can make the journey take well over 2 hours.
• There’s tolls: When you drive from Orlando to Tampa, you will pass through a few toll roads, so make sure you have cash or another way of paying.
• Head to your destination: If you use Google Maps, put in your final destination rather than simply heading to Tampa. You might need to take a different interstate exit depending on where you are going.
• Don’t drive too slow: On the parts where the speed limit on the I-4 is 70mph, if you drive under 50mph, you can get a traffic ticket. Just like how you can for speeding too.
• Check the conditions in advance: As you may know, Florida can experience some pretty extreme weather, so make sure you check the conditions of the journey on an app like the Florida 511 Mobile App , to find the current status of the roads.

The drive from Orlando to Tampa is a brief one. You need less than 2 hours to complete the trip if you are lucky enough to avoid rush hour traffic. Because you’re traveling between 2 cities, you’ll need to add extra time if you plan to drive during morning or evening rush hours. Also, keep in mind that the routes that involve roads other than Interstate 4 West have tolls.

Driving Directions from Orlando to Tampa

Once you have your plans in place for getting from Orlando to Tampa, you can choose the best route depending on where you would like to stop along the way, or where in the Tampa area you are headed.

• The most straightforward route is to get on I-4 W and follow that all the way to Tampa. This will take about 1.5 hours.
• A longer route takes highways part of the way. Take Florida Highway 408 W to Florida Highway 50 West. Then take I-75 S and I-275 S into downtown Tampa.
• A third option is to take Highway 408 W and Highway 50 W to Florida Highway 33 S. From here, get on I-4 W and take it all the way to Tampa.

Fantasy of Flight, Polk City

Roughly halfway between Orlando and Tampa, Fantasy of Flight is just off of I-4 in the town of Polk City. This is a premier aviation attraction home to over 100 rare vintage aircraft, interactive exhibits, flight simulators, and more.

Dinosaur World, Plant City

A large outdoor park, Dinosaur World has more than 200 life-size dinosaurs for those both young and old to see in their natural habitat. You can dig for fossils, and there’s also an indoor museum with artifacts that’s perfect for rainy days.

Lettuce Lake Park, Tampa

The lovely Lettuce Lake Park just to the northeast of downtown Tampa has a nature center and a long boardwalk all the way to an observation tower.  People come for a day spent canoeing or bird watching, and there are also spots for a picnic if you want a break from driving before you reach Tampa.

Busch Gardens, Tampa Bay

Busch Gardens is a massive African-themed amusement park located in Tampa Bay. There are rides, safaris and animal exhibits at this famed attraction that are a nice alternative to the theme parks around Orlando.

A Tale of Two Cities: How to Make the Most of Orlando and Tampa

Visits to Tampa and Orlando yield similar and very different travel experiences — all of them amazing. Only one hour away from each other, you may be able to squeeze in a little of both over the course of a long weekend.  Here’s our list of the best things to see in Tampa to Orlando for a truly magical Florida getaway.

Get Your Thrills

Of course, Orlando’s known for its theme parks, of which there are plenty to choose — Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom , Epcot , and Universal Orlando are just a few of my favorites. No matter which world you want to escape into, or beneath, it’s most likely found in Orlando.

About an hour west of Orlando’s theme parks, Busch Gardens Tampa holds its own in that realm, and in between the two — if you arc a bit — is Legoland Florida , in Winter Haven, a theme park of a build.

In addition to seeing the wildlife found at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Busch Gardens’ 12,000-plus animals , I like to visit Big Cat Rescue in Tampa — one of the world’s largest accredited sanctuaries for exotic cats. Here you can get up close and personal to some of the most magnificent creatures, but no petting!

If you want to get back to nature, go just outside Orlando’s city limits. There, you’ll find airboat rides that whisk you quickly away into the swamps and marshes where you can spot alligators, as well as loads of birds and other animals that make their homes in that environment. In Tampa, I head out to the Hillsborough River for kayaking, and spot plenty of gators and birds there, too.

Hit the Beach

One thing that sets Tampa apart from Orlando is its close proximity to the beach. Where it may take an hour to reach sandy shores from Orlando, in a mere 30 minutes you can be neck-deep in the Gulf of Mexico, enjoying fun under the sun. Sometimes, all you need while traveling is a little R&R!

Famed Daytona Beach and Cocoa Beach are each just about an hour east of Orlando, with packed beaches and lots going on. If you prefer the smaller crowds, go to New Smyrna Beach, between Daytona and Cocoa. And for even smaller crowds, in New Smyrna, head to Smyrna Dunes Park — it’s a mile and a half walk through the dunes, via a boardwalk, but well worth it. And your dog can join you, too!

On the west coast, if being in the middle of the action is how you like to spend your days under the sun, spread your towel at Clearwater Beach or St. Pete Beach . For a bit more quiet and solitude at the shore, I opt for Indian Shores or Redington Shores, between Clearwater and St. Pete.

Party and Hang With Locals

Festivals and events fill the calendars in Orlando and Tampa throughout the year, from farmers’ markets to craft beer fests to music festivals, and so much more. In the spring, rock out at Tampa’s Gasparilla Music Festival (March), or the Florida Music Festival in Orlando (April).

As far as farmers markets, Orlando’s Winter Park Farmers’ Market and its ultra-popular Saturday Market (every Saturday, 7 a.m. – 1 p.m.) are popular with locals and visitors alike — you may arrive hungry, but you certainly won’t leave that way!

The Tampa area has a number of farmers markets, most of which run seasonally. Among the local favorites is the Seminole Heights Sunday Morning Market , held the second Sunday of the month, in the Seminole Heights neighborhood. The Tampa Downtown Market is every Sunday, 10 a.m.- 3 p.m., October – May. Running year-round, the Ybor City Saturday Market is held every Saturday starting at 9 a.m. and running until early- to mid-afternoon, depending on the time of year. Perhaps the most popular in the area is St. Petersburg’s Saturday Morning Market , every Saturday, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m., October – May.

Those who've spent time in Orlando know of the intense need for a break from theme parks, especially if they've been there for a few days. It's not surprising, then, that so many people look to travel from Orlando to Tampa.

A land-locked city located in central Florida, Orlando lies about 84 miles northeast of Tampa , which has the bonus of sitting on the glistening Hillsborough Bay. Tampa's fun attractions and nearby beaches (you'll need to travel a bit to get to the sand) are huge draws for tourists looking for a little R&R.

Luckily, there are a bunch of easy and affordable ways to get to Tampa, including renting a car, taking a train, and boarding a bus. Those with deep pockets can also splurge on a private plane.

1. From Orlando to Tampa by Car

The easiest way to get from Orlando to Tampa is by car , especially if you're leaving from the airport. Rent a car at one of the most popular companies, which include, Enterprise , Hertz , Dollar , and Sixt .

Book in advance for the best rate and be sure to ask about the company's policy on tolls. You'll encounter at least one toll road on your journey, and depending on what the company charges, you might be better off buying your own Sun Pass.

The shortest, fastest, and easiest route involves taking the I-4 West all the way to Tampa. Get on the highway and set cruise control, because you can follow it the entire way to the coast. Taking a drive without stopping is no fun, though, so we suggest making a few pit stops along the way. This will take just under two hours to drive .

Recommended Stops: What's an East Coast road trip without at least one cheesy attraction thrown in? Dinosaur World lies about 66 miles between Orlando and Tampa and is the perfect place to visit for families. You'll reach it in about an hour and a half, and the kids will go crazy over the hundreds of life-sized dinos on display.

Shaded boardwalks allow travelers to stretch their legs from the car ride, and the themed playground ensures little ones will tucker themselves out enough to sleep the rest of the way to Tampa. You'll have about half an hour left to travel when you get back in the car.

If dinosaurs aren't your thing, you could schedule a stop at the Bok Tower Gardens in Polk County. This serene attraction lies an hour and 45 minutes southwest of Orlando by Lake Wales. Chill out in the gardens, visit the Singing Tower, and find harmony wandering along the nature trails.

You'll have another hour and a half to drive to Tampa after your excursion, but you'll be so blissed out by all that bird-watching and forest bathing that you won't even notice.

2. From Orlando to Tampa by Train

Taking a train is the easiest and one of the cheapest ways to get from Orlando to Tampa . Amtrak's trains depart once a day (in the morning) and cost $11 to $14. If you want to book a room, expect to pay about $170 or up to $255. That said, the trip is so short, there's really no need to spend the extra cash.

The train journey will take just over two hours, which is a perfect amount of time to enjoy a catnap, or zone out while watching the pretty scenery zip by the window.

Trains depart from Orlando Health/Amtrak Station, near downtown at 1400 Sligh Blvd. They arrive at Tampa Union Station, downtown at 601 N Nebraska Avenue.

3. From Orlando to Tampa by Bus

Taking a bus is another cheap and easy way to get from Orlando to Tampa , and tourists have three main companies to choose from.

Greyhound offers multiple buses a day. They leave from the Orlando Bus Station at 555 N John Young Parkway and take anywhere from one hour and 40 mins to over two hours to arrive in Tampa. They pull into the Tampa Bus Station at 610 E Polk Street. A one-way ticket will cost about $16 to $44, depending on the time you travel and the fare you choose.

Flixbus offers many departures from different stops, including the University of Central Florida, Orlando International Drive, Orlando MCO Airport, and Kissimmee North. The drive takes anywhere from one hour and 25 minutes to over three hours, depending on which bus you take. Fares begin at $12.99, plus service fees and tax.

RedCoach buses leave from the Gateway Shopping Plaza and arrive at the University of South Florida just under four hours later. These cost about $83 for a one-way fare.

4. From Orlando to Tampa by Plane

Hoping to hit the skies for your journey from Orlando to Tampa? You'll probably want to splurge on chartering your own plane. American Airlines flies this route, but it can take over three hours, or possibly more than eight. All flights include one stop, usually in Miami . The cost can range from $439 to $678 for a one-way trip.

Evojets offers a few options for chartering a private jet. The cheapest is an "executive turboprop," which seats up to nine people and takes 25 minutes in the air. It comes with a hefty price tag of $5,800 to $7,800 for a one-way trip.

Chartering a "heavy jet" will make you feel like an A-lister. These large jets (i.e., a Gulfstream G-IV) seat up to 16 people and will reach Tampa in a mere 16 minutes . The price is a bit jaw-dropping, ranging from $20,800 to $28,100 each way.

While flying in a private plane is the most expensive way to get from Orlando to Tampa , it's also the fastest.

One of the best Florida road trips from Orlando has to be to get up close and personal to the space shuttle Atlantis at the famous Kennedy Space Center , just one hour outside of Orlando.

The shuttle launches may have stopped, but the Space Center is still an excellent, unforgettable experience that gives you a taste of what an astronaut’s life is like and gives you important insight into the ongoing work of the space program in the USA. Another spot that is one of the top places to road trip to in Florida is Jacksonville , the largest city by land area in the contiguous United States, — and the most populated in Florida. But don’t be put off by the vast size or somewhat isolated position just 25 miles south of the Georgia state line, Jacksonville is a treasure trove of activities and one of the most underrated things to do in Florida.

Stretching across both sides of the St. Johns River (and with two more meandering waterways now located entirely within Jacksonville), this is a city of spanning bridges, twinkling city lights reflecting on the water and numerous lookout points to enjoy the unusual cityscape. 

While your first impressions of high-rise towers and corporate head offices might put you off, Jacksonville has the soul of a southern belle if you look deeper. A good place to start is wandering its 22 miles of beaches,  extensive park systems, or historic neighborhoods. There are plenty of things to do with curious museums, a lauded street art scene, coastal cuisine, the hoppy craft beer scene, and so much more! 

Though the city is gigantic, most places of interest are clustered along with the St Johns River’s narrowest point around the downtown and the historic Five Points and San Marco neighborhoods (filled with bistros, boutiques, and restaurants).

The Everglades National Park is a 1.5-million-acre world-famous wetland preserve – and one of the best national parks in Florida. With everything from coastal mangroves to marshes and pine flat woods, not to mention all the animal species, this iconic park invigorates the senses and gives you a big breath of fresh air.

We love the majestic Everglades, but there is so much more to the nature of Florida. One such place is the Ocala National Forest , located just north of Orlando.

There is very much the ‘Old Florida,’ and you can appreciate what early settlers would have experienced when they arrived in this humid and confusing land all those years ago. And get a sense of what this area of Florida was like before the theme parks arrived and changed everything forever.

Historic Spanish Point in Osprey, Florida, is a spectacular 30-acre heritage and nature attraction. The highlights within are all connected by a 1-mile walking tour that passes through various historic sites in an otherwise pristine coastal ecosystem of clear springs, white sand, alligator-filled wetlands, and jumbled mangroves.

There is no real Spanish connection here (the name is a tribute to the Spanish merchant who told settlers, John and Eliza Webb, about this idyllic location in 1867). The praise was the least they could so as the expansive site is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in County Sarasota. In 1910, Bertha Palmer, a well-to-do Chicago socialite, bought the Spanish Point home along with vast tracts in the surrounding area for cattle ranching, citrus groves, and land development.

The original pioneering homestead was part of the property she selected for her 350-acre estate, which she called “Osprey Point.” She retained the pioneering buildings and combined them with lush landscaped gardens and lawns. Mrs. Palmer passed in 1918, and her family preserved Osprey Point in the following decades and encouraged the nomination of the Spanish Point to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. In 1980, the Palmer heirs donated the National Registry to the Gulf Coast Heritage Association, and the Osprey Point site is now home to the Historic Spanish Point Museum.

Don’t miss the charming Selby Gardens, hugging the beautiful Sarasota Bay, a tropical urban oasis of unparalleled botanical bliss or the turn-of-the-century pioneer homestead historic house museum. A magnificent historic place close to Sarasota, there is so much to explore here, with well-maintained trails and even trams that cross large areas of the grounds if the humid Florida heat makes walking less appealing.

The natural beauty alone means that even without the archeological significance, Historic Spanish Point would be one of the best places to visit from Orlando. And is somewhere you should allow at least half a day to explore.

Sarasota is sophistication without excess, a medium-sized city without the hustle and bustle. Think gorgeous beaches, relaxed ‘Happy Hour’ specials, a charming downtown, and plenty of low-key attractions.

A famed winter retreat for the affluent, one of the biggest drawcards here is the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art – if you can draw yourself away from the miles of coastline that is.

There is also a world-class botanical garden, plenty of museums and child-friendly activities – but the Happy Hour food and drinks in the Lido Beach Hotel , with stunning views up and down the coast, is absolutely not to be missed.

Being surrounded by water on three sides and have a rich maritime history, is it any wonder scuba diving in Florida is some of the best in the world. Well, for wreck divers, at least. Its biodiversity doesn’t compare with spots like the Galapagos , Komodo , or Sipidan sadly.

More ocean-going vessels have had the misfortune of hitting reefs while sailed off the coast of Florida than we can keep a record off — and some are even at that sweet spot that can be explored by snorkelers.

Almost anywhere you stay along the coast will have opportunities for diving, but for enthusiasts, Panama City is the wreck capital of Florida providing an underwater graveyard for over a dozen warships, tugs, and most famously a 441-foot World War II “Liberty Ship; “The Chippewa.” There are also natural reefs just a few miles offshore with small corals and colorful sponges.

Another incredible option for diving is the granddaddy USS Oriskany at 911ft long, 148ft wide and 129ft tall, (diveable from Pensacola), or the many wrecks which litter the seafloor around Fort Lauderdale.

For snorkelers, a Spanish galleon, the Urca de Lima , is found in only 10ft of water close to Fort Pierce, or Biscay National Park has a maritime heritage trail with six ships that are small enough for snorkelers.

Florida’s capital is a city of unexpected delights, with larger-than-life festivals, energetic nightlife, award-winning cuisine, and over 700 miles of trails and endless outdoor adventures.

Tallahassee , the largest city in Florida Panhandle, is cradled between slowly rising hills and filled with tree-lined avenues, street art, and a distinctly different vibe than the rest of Florida. Tallahassee is a peaceful and majestic city (ironically) more southern that much of the state it oversees to the South. Given that geographically, it’s nearer to Atlanta than Miami, this inverse relation makes sense.

Even though the city is home to two major universities (Florida State and Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University) and plenty of governmental institutions, the tempo of life here is remarkably slow, only adding to its charm. There is a range of museums to explore, like the Tallahassee Museum of History & Natural Science and the Museum of Florida History, which explores European colonization, the Civil War, and WWII, but it’s the southern atmosphere and way of life we found the most alluring.

If you are only dropping by, a glass of sweet tea and a plate of cornmeal-battered catfish from the Catfish Pad is as good an introduction as any.

The crown jewel of the Florida Keys, Key West is a tiny seven square-mile island at the end of Florida’s Overseas Highway. An island of contradictions, you can find here peaceful tropical beaches, world-class snorkeling, and a daily sunset celebration – but this is also an island filled with bars, clubs, frat boys, mass tourism, and even an  S&M fetishist parade.

The drive out, however, is gorgeous, and with proper planning, Key West can be everything you dreamed and more. I recommend staying in the newly opened Perry Hotel for a quiet location away from the crowds, and talking to the guys as Namaste Excursions for an eco-snorkeling excursion to one of the best-preserved reefs in Florida.

Just don’t forget your coral friendly sunscreen!   Whatever you are interested in, Key West has it – and add in the stunning sunsets, happy hour specials, and relaxed island vibes, and you have a destination you just cannot pass up!

St Augustine was founded by the Spaniards in 1565 and today stands as one of the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the continental USA. This alone makes it one of the top places to visit, and indeed it is a major tourist destination — thanks to its 144-block National Historic Landmark District – but there is a lot more to love here.

St Augustine embodies beauty and retains its dignity, having developed gracefully over the years. However, there is no ignoring the blight of kitschy tourist traps that have come with its fame. There are miniature amusement parks, tour companies at almost every intersection , and horse-drawn carriages plodding along the street. Not to mention everyone dressed up in period costumes from ye’ olden days.

Love it or hate it, one of the main endearing qualities of St Augustine is the rich heritage of built architecture, landmarks, and picturesque cobblestone streets complemented by a seemingly endless array of museums. Unlike other faux-historic theme parks in Florida, St Augustine has the credentials to back its fame up.

This is a town of people who were born and bred here, and many of them have chosen to stay in St. Augustine precisely because they are so passionate about their historic city. That means that despite its often touristy feel, there is also an incredible array of beautiful-restored B&Bs, cute cafes, cozy pubs, which only add to the town’s timeless appeal.

Legend has it St Augustine is the home of the elusive fountain of youth, and while it may never have been found — or at least made public — there is plenty of ghost tours and costumed actors willing to help you find it. For those who don’t fall for the allure of endless youth, the ludicrously ornate Hotel Ponce de Leon and Hotel Alcazar are architectural gems to hunt out. Designed by Henry Flagler – each is landmarks of Florida in their own right.

Idyllic Sanibel Island , found on the Gulf of Mexico, just a quick drive from Fort Myers, is renowned for its sunsets, lighthouse, luxurious resorts, and abundance of beautiful and rare shells.

Seashell enthusiasts —yes, there is such a thing — come here for all over the USA to try their luck hunting for the spiral calcium gems that wash up along the beaches here. Over 250 kinds of shells have been found here. One of Florida’s hidden gems, island life on Sanibel is spontaneous and carefree.

The island’s egalitarian nature gives it a rather refreshing point of difference. Growth at Sanibel has been consciously considered, and the island’s northern half is almost completely contained within the JN ‘Ding’ Darling National Wildlife Refuge. The result is a very paradise lost kind of vibe, with 15 miles of pristine beaches, 25 miles of bike paths, and zero stoplights.

There is no downtown, and the beachfront is blissfully free of the ubiquitous commercial-and-condo monstrosities that can be found on most of Florida’s coastlines.

Plus, there are only a few beach points of access, meaning it is easy to find your own seclusion. There are mansions here, but the hidden from view and life is a very casual affair. St Petersburg has been busy establishing a new identity as a culturally sophisticated Southern City — and its efforts ensure it is now worthy of a place on this list of Florida road trip ideas from Orlando.

Yes, it is still a place for spring break parties and retirement, but St. Pete’s is now much more than that. Conveniently located on Florida’s gulf coast, part of the Tampa Bay area, there is a revitalized waterfront, bustling new commercial district and the incredible Dalí Museum, offering the largest collection of Dalí’s works outside Europe and worthy of a trip in-and-of-itself.

The St Petersburg’s downtown is slowly expanding, and Central Ave is now the place to be with a glut of stylish restaurants, in vogue craft breweries, hipster farmers’ markets, and modern art galleries fueled by a wave of young urbanites moving here. It’s not yet as cool as San Diego or Palm Springs , but St Petersburg is getting there. And travelers with a curiosity in food and culture will not want to miss it.

If being part of the glitterati is not top of your list of Floridan things to do, you might still be drawn to Naples to the significant land reserves in the surrounding area, including the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge, and the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge.

The small town of Gainesville initially prospered as a citrus-producing town thanks to its fortuitous location upon the Florida Railroad Company’s route, which trudged along via Cedar Key towards Fernandina Beach.

Then the frequent freezes in the 1890s led to orange-growers migrating south. But today, Gainesville in northern Florida is not a forgotten backwater – but rather a vibrant, energetic, and fun city with consistently high livability rankings.

In large part due to being home to the second-largest university in the state, the expansive University of Florida. The University campus might be 2 kilometers away from the urban core, but there are tons of affordable food, trendy bars, and great exhibitions and art galleries thanks to the student culture the engulfs the whole city. Intertwined with this young, student-lead culture is the flourishing music scene of Gainesville. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are just two of the more well-known bands to have made their start in Gainesville in recent years.

There are frequent alternative rock and punk rock gigs, though music-lovers can find almost everything here, from bluegrass to reggae, hip-hop, and even techno. If music and arts and culture don’t do it for you, the area outside of Gainesville is a haven for natural pursuits. There are large untouched wilderness areas and crystal-clear springs providing abundant opportunities for hiking, biking, kayaking, swimming, and more. No wonder so many students love it here.

Side note: Gainesville is were Gatorade was invented, by the science department at the University of Florida who were trying to combat the Fighting’ Gators football team’s fatigue. If you are going to fully absorb yourself in the attractions on offer here (by day, or by night), you’ll need a bottle or two yourself!

Just next to Pensacola, the gorgeous Panhandle Barrier Islands and one of the many natural highlights of Florida – and thankfully, the most stunning parts including a mainland area and parts of seven islands are now protected as the Gulf Islands National Seashore.

Although the area is well recognized for its energetic beach towns, those who want some solitude will find isolated spots with pure white sand easy to find.  There is a cornucopia of riches the be discovered here beyond the magnificent white beaches — with sparkling blue water, coastal marshes, historic forts, trails, and campgrounds. Stretching across from Cat Island, Mississippi eastward for 160 miles to Fort Walton Beach, Florida, there is a lot to discover. The National Parks Service has plenty of information to help you explore further.

Whether you want to relax, nap, and tan on a sandy bank or explore the vestiges of Fort Pickens, there is something for everyone. Southwest Airlines selling $53 tickets in celebration of 53 years of flights

Southwest Airlines is celebrating turning 53 with $53 airfares.

Travelers hoping to score a deal need to book by 11:59 p.m. PT Thursday.

The $53 one-way tickets are only available on select days and routes but include flights to Hawaii, Puerto Rico and international destinations, according to Southwest.

Eligible travel must occur on Mondays-Thursdays or Saturdays between Aug. 6 and Dec. 18 for flights within the lower 48 with  Sept. 2, Oct. 14, Nov. 22-27 and Nov. 29 through Dec. 2 as blackout dates. 

Flights to Hawaii, Puerto Rico and international destinations must occur on Tuesdays or Wednesdays between Aug. 20 and Nov. 20, with Sept. 3 blacked out. 

Some of the routes currently advertising $53 fares are Atlanta to Tampa and Los Angeles to Phoenix.

'The Disney cut-through' — Some drivers use dangerous dirt lot to travel between Lake and Orange counties

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — A path through an unpaved dirt lot has become a popular, and potentially dangerous connection between Lake and Orange counties. 

What You Need To Know

Drivers are cutting through a bumpy dirt lot to connect sawgrass bay boulevard in lake county to flemings road in orange county tom stutesman says plenty of vehicles get stuck trying to use the route stutesman said he wants to see the road paved to connect lake and orange counties orange county says work to connect the two roads is expected to start in late 2025.

Area resident Tom Stutesman said drivers take the dead end at Sawgrass Bay Boulevard in Lake County and cross 150 feet of unpaved lot to Flemings Road in Orange County, which is a direct connection to Western Way and the back entrance of Walt Disney World.

“This is what we affectionately refer to as the 'Disney cut-through,'” he said.

Stutesman is urging county leaders to build a proper connection now.

“Right now, for me, it takes me about 35 minutes (to get to work)," he said. "And if this road was all the way through to Western Way, it would drop that by 25 minutes, if not 30 minutes."

Despite the 'No Trespassing' sign, some drivers are daring enough to travel over the bumpy, unpaved lot to cut down on their commute.

“There’s a couple of ways that are so dangerous that you’re literally driving on the edge of the retention pond. And, I mean, somebody is going to fall in the water,” said Stutesman, who also said plenty of drivers get stuck trying to take the route.

Lake County officials said they’ve done all they can until Orange County starts construction. A spokesman for Orange County said a developer will build a four-lane road for Flemings Road to connect to Lake County’s portion of the project, with work starting in late 2025.

“Frankly, to be honest with you, I feel that government should be stepping in and building this thing right now,” said Stutesman. “They’ve waited a long time. They’ve announced it, but it’s needed now.” 

Stutesman says a permanent fix should be built soon, given the popularity of the cut through.

When United Launch Alliance launches its Delta IV Heavy rocket − for the final time − people way outside the Space Coast of Florida could possibly see it light up the sky.

Depending on cloud cover, Floridians (and visitors) as far as Jacksonville, Cape Coral and Miami could see ULA's Delta IV Heavy as it roars into the sky from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Visibility from most of Florida is possible, according to ULA.

About the last Delta IV Heavy rocket launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida

It's the final countdown for  Delta IV Heavy , United Launch Alliance's powerful rocket.

At 12:53 p.m. EDT Tuesday, April 9, 2024, the Delta IV Heavy rocket , which had been dubbed by ULA as "the most metal of rockets," was set to deliver NROL-70,  a National Reconnaissance Office  mission, to space from  Space Launch Complex-37 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station .

The mission marks the 389th and last flight of the Delta program, which dates back to 1960. ULA is replacing the retiring rocket with the next-generation Vulcan, which logged a successful maiden flight in January from Cape Canaveral.

The Delta IV Heavy made its debut during a December 2004 demonstration flight from Launch Complex 37. At that time, it was the most powerful rocket launched from Cape Canaveral save the Saturn V and space shuttles.

Where to watch Delta IV Heavy rocket launch  live from areas close to the Space Coast of Florida

In Florida, we can best see this historic moment in person if you're  anywhere on the Space Coast (Brevard County ) or certain spots in the  First Coast or Fun Coast (Volusia County ) or the  Treasure Coast (Indian River County, St. Lucie County and Martin County ).  Pro tip:  If you do watch it in person, get to your viewing destination early and prepare to stay later after the launch because of heavy traffic.

• 2: Launch + 60 seconds , Space Coast, northern part of Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach, Treasure Coast, possibly Martin County, possibly St. Lucie County, parts of East-Central Florida like Orlando, near University of Central Florida, Bithlo
• 3: Launch + 90 seconds , visibility extends to Orlando, Sanford, Kissimmee, Daytona Beach, other parts of Central Florida
• 4: Launch + 120 seconds , visibility extends to Port St. Lucie, Lakeland, Sebring, Winter Haven, Palatka, St. Augustine
• About 130 seconds (Port/Starboard, booster jettison), visibility extends to include most of central and East Coast of Florida
• 5: Launch + 150 seconds , visibility extends to West Palm Beach, Ocala, the Village, Sebring, most of central and East Coast of Florida, Tampa, parts of West Coast of Florida

• Beyond 240 seconds, Delta IV Heavy should see center booster separation and main engine start, according to the ULA graphic.

• Beyond 300 seconds, the graphic shows Delta Heavy payload fairing jettison.

• Clearwater and St. Petersburg appear to be out of range. Interestingly, the Bahamas and Freeport are in the launch visibility zones.

What is Delta Heavy?

Delta Heavy refers to United Launch Alliance's Delta IV Heavy rocket. The ULA rocket made history for its transportation of the NASA  Parker Solar Probe  in 2018 and the first orbital test flight of the Orion crew capsule in 2014.

It was following the success of this flight that NASA’s Orion crew capsule flew on NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, successfully demonstrating an uncrewed mission around the moon in 2022. ULA assisted in this flight as well, as the organization designed the upper stage of the SLS rocket.

The Orion spacecraft is set to take  Artemis II astronauts around the Moon in late 2025 .

How big is Delta IV Heavy rocket? What’s the size and power of ULA Delta IV Heavy rocket?

The Delta IV Heavy rocket has three Delta IV core stages together. According to the ULA website, each rocket engine produces up to 702,000 pounds of thrust. With this performance, one can see why ULA dubbed it "the most metal."

These engines are not small either. Just one engine weighs around 14,876 pounds and is 204 inches (17 feet) in length. Powered by liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, the Delta IV Heavy appears to "set itself on fire" just before liftoff as buoyant hydrogen gas, which is used to cool down the rocket before launch, ignites and burns off. The fiery start may look frightening, yet it's part of the process.

The Delta IV Heavy rocket will lift off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, with a classified payload on the NROL-70 national security mission, conducted in tandem with the National Reconnaissance Office and the Space Force’s Space Systems Command. The massive rocket launches the NRO's heaviest satellites. The missions that Delta IV Heavy carried were not all related to science; many were for navigation and U.S. security. Delta IV transported mostly NRO, US Air Force, and US Space Force payloads, getting them safely to their orbit or destination.
