Auckland Itinerary: 1-2 Days in Auckland

Auckland is one of the world’s most alluring cities, built on a narrow isthmus between Manuka and Waitemata Harbours and sprinkled with over 50 volcanoes. The city is surrounded by stunning views and streets are lined with a variety of restaurants and cafes, museums and shops, boutiques and cinemas, as well as bars. Without a doubt, there are plenty of entertaining things to do in Auckland , and any New Zealand itinerary should include at a minimum, a quick trip through Auckland.

One Day in Auckland

Despite being one of New Zealand’s most recognizable cities and the largest city on the North Island, you can see and do a lot with one day in Auckland. Put on a comfy pair of shoes, this itinerary includes a lot of walking and packs a lot into one day.

Albert Park

The first two stops for your Auckland itinerary are two famous parks in Auckland that are apart of the Coast to Coast Walkway that stretches 16km across Auckland. The full walk features incredible views of the city, the harbours, islands, volcanoes, and the local flora and fauna.

The walk is broken into three parts, the first being the city to Auckland Domain, which typically takes about an hour from Viaduct Basin and is the part featured in this itinerary.

The first stop is Albert Park, an important park in Auckland for its history as it used to be a Maori village and it’s also a volcanic field. A notable place to stop in Albert Park is at the Victorian fountain and at the Queen Victoria Statue.

Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki

At the edge of Albert Park you’ll find the Auckland Art Gallery which houses over 15,000 art pieces, making it the largest art institution in New Zealand. It features a mix of local, Maori, and international art. If you’re an art lover, consider booking a tour of the museum to learn the details and inspiration behind some of the pieces.

Auckland Domain

Continue walking the Coast to Coast Walkway until you reach the Auckland Domain, Auckland’s largest and oldest park. Head to the duck pond to see, well, ducks. They populate what was Auckland’s first water supply. The main stop in the Auckland Domain is the Wintergardens, 2 Victorian-style glasshouses that house gorgeous and rare plants that you can view.

If you love history, make a stop at the Auckland War Memorial Museum which is in the middle of the park. You can take guided tours or walk around on your own learning about the Maori people and culture. The ground level explores the indigenous people and origins of New Zealand, the first level explores the evolution of New Zealand’s landscape and animal history and level 2 is dedicated to the countries military history as well as a War Memorial for anyone who has served in the military.

Grab lunch or something light at the Wintergardens cafe or have a bite to eat in the Graton area to power up for the afternoon.

The second part of the Coast to Coast Walkway takes you from Grafton (where the Auckland Domain is) to Maungakiekie and takes about 90 minutes to walk. You’ll walk to the summit of Mount Eden, the highest natural point in Auckland where you will be rewarded with endless views of the surrounding areas.

If you prefer not to walk up (there is a 196m elevation change which is quite doable!), you can always grab an Uber or the bus which will take you up most of the way.

Opt to walk back down or catch a ride to the Sky Tower where you can get even more views of Auckland or if your timing is right, you can catch a great view of the sunset. If you’re adventurous, you may want to skip Mount Eden so that you have time to do the SkyWalk instead.

Viaduct Basin

Head over to the waterfront at Viaduct Basin where there is an abundance of restaurants and bars. This area comes alive at night so you can grab food and drinks and opt to party the night away by the water.

Two Days in Auckland

Ideally, you’ll be able to spend more than a day in Auckland so you can experience more of what this gem of a city has to offer.

If you only have 2 days in Auckland it’s recommended that you go on a day trip on your second day. Waiheke Island, Hobbiton, Whangamata, and Piha Beach are recommended as the top choices (with more details below). Though if you’re headed to Rotorua , a stop at Hobbiton is easy as a half-day trip.

If you have 3 days in Auckland, follow this itinerary below and then do a day trip on your third day!

Rangitoto Island

A favourite activity for locals and tourists alike, Rangitoto is an easy visit as it’s just a quick ferry ride from Auckland’s CBD. Rangitoto Island is a 600-year-old volcano that emerged from the sea, making it both the youngest and largest volcano in the Auckland region.

This popular day trip is ideal for hikers and nature lovers as you have the option of hiking or taking a 4WD vehicle up to the top of the summit track. It’s about an hour’s walk each way and you can stop at the black lava caves to explore. The views from the top are, of course, spectacular as you can see as far as the Waitakere Ranges.

Be sure to have snacks and water though as there are no stores on the island! You also have the option of kayaking to the island or even doing a night kayak for the sunset.

Sailing around the Harbour

Auckland is lovingly called, “The City of Sails” because 1 in 3 Aucklanders own a boat. Adding a relaxing cruise to your Auckland itinerary gives you a whole different perspective of the city. Your captain will take you past Sky Tower, Auckland Harbour Bridge, and the rest of the city skyline while you sip on beverages and snack on light refreshments. You can sit back and relax the whole time or you can help the crew out while they teach you to sail. There are options for both morning or afternoon boat trips.

Queen Street

If you want to get some shopping done while in Auckland, spend a couple of hours on Queen Street (if time allows), Auckland’s most prestigious shopping street. While you’ll find high-end brands here such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada, and more, you’ll also find a diverse range of shops so you won’t just be window shopping.

Auckland Day Trip Options

There are many awesome day trips from Auckland but these are a few of the top choices to consider if you’re limited on time in Auckland.

Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island is one of the most popular day trips from Auckland City and is almost always included in everyone’s Auckland itinerary. Waiheke Island is best known for its vineyards and wineries laid out against the gorgeous backdrop of rolling hills and the surrounding sea. Small-group tours are available that will take you to some of the best wineries for samples of wine paired with fresh, tasty food. You’ll take the ferry to and from the island and have a knowledgeable tour guide with you. You can also visit the island on your own and do your own DIY tour of the wineries and beaches.

Most people who visit New Zealand are fans of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and can’t leave the country without making a trip to Hobbiton. The Hobbiton Movie set will take you down Hobbit Holes, The Mill, and the Green Dragon Inn. Movie magic comes to life on this day trip from Auckland.

About 2 hours south of Auckland is a cute little beach town called Whangamata. Despite its small size, there are hundreds of things to do here. There are two different waterfalls you can hike to called Wentworth Falls and the Wahrekirauponga Track Falls, you can learn to surf or you can kayak or stand up paddleboard to Donut Island, relax on the beach, play mini-golf, go shopping, or go snorkeling.

Opoutere Beach or Onemana Beach are top choices, but Pokohino Beach is a secret beach that you can ask any local about. There are some really good cafes and restaurants with mouth-watering coffees and food too. While this town is easily accessible when you have your own car it’s a bit difficult to get to with public transport.

Piha Beach is dramatically gorgeous. This black sand beach is protected by high rugged cliffs and is popular with the locals and surfers. In the warmer months, there is a lifeguard on duty and you can easily take surf lessons and swim in front of the guards. You can also climb up Lion Rock and look out at the endless expanse of the Tasman Sea and towards the north end of the beach, you can hike the Marawhara White Rose Laid Thompson Track. This track takes about two hours and leads to white-sand beaches and more stunning views of the wild west coast of New Zealand.

There are loads of other things to do in and around Piha Beach too. You can go abseiling through Piha Canyon down gushing waterfalls flowing to the nearby ocean. There are also caves and gorges as you make your way back through the canyon. You can take a hike to KiteKite Falls, where cascading falls are 40m high and consist of several tiers. There endless things to do on this day trip from Auckland.

Where to Stay in Auckland

If you have just a short time like 24 hours in Auckland or a weekend in Auckland, staying in the CBD (Central Business District) is your best bet. This leaves you close to everything that you need, including public transport, shopping centres, food markets, and restaurants, plus all that is listed in this Auckland itinerary.

Having spent a few months here, I came to appreciate the conveniences of city living. Yet, what stood out was the stunning natural environment. The city is surrounded by lush rainforests, rugged coastlines, and a multitude of serene islands scattered throughout the Hauraki Gulf.

These itineraries are designed to provide you with a diverse range of experiences in Auckland and its surroundings. I’ve aimed to find a balance between sightseeing, uncovering trendy spots in the city, and venturing into the outskirts.

I’ve condensed all of the best things to do and the most amazing places to see into these 1, 2, 3, and 7 day itineraries for Auckland. The longer your stay, the more day trips you’ll be able to do.

I’ll be giving you plenty of information with links to other relevant articles for each place or activity whenever I mention it for the first time. But since these activities repeat for different itineraries I left those as a list and you can refer back up for more info when needed.

Auckland City can be visited in just one short day. 2-3 days are a good amount of time to explore the city and a bit of the surroundings.

However, Auckland is also a great base for day trips to explore the wider area from. If you prefer to do day trips rather than doing a New Zealand North Island road trip, you could spend a week or more in Auckland.

For your stay, I highly recommend you pick an accommodation that is fairly central. The areas around Queen Street, the Sky Tower, Britomart, and Viaduct are perfect and here you’ll find a great selection of hotels.

Queen Street

Queen Street, Auckland’s main thoroughfare, is the ideal place to explore, shop, dine, or simply soak in the dynamic atmosphere off this metropolis. It’s the city’s primary shopping and dining destination, offering a wide range of stores and eateries.

Auckland Art Gallery

The Auckland Art Gallery, situated just off Queen Street, houses an extensive collection of traditional, modern and contemporary art.

The collection reflects New Zealand’s visual history, spanning from the earliest interactions between Māori and European explorers in the 1600s. In addition to its local focus, the gallery also maintains an international collection of paintings, sculptures, and prints.

Albert Park

Albert Park, just behind the Art Gallery is a historic park that offers a delightful escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. Stroll beneath the lush canopy of trees, admire the ornate Victorian-era fountain, and enjoy the tranquility of this green retreat.

With its manicured lawns and charming pathways, Albert Park provides a perfect place for relaxation and a pleasant respite all while showcasing the beauty of New Zealand’s indigenous vegetation.

Auckland Sky Tower

The Sky Tower dominates the city’s skyline with a height of 328 meters (1,076 feet) and is the tallest building in Australasia. Between the 50th and 60th floor, there is a café, two restaurants, and two observation decks.

Book this Skip the Line ticket for access to the upper levels.

The highest observation deck is perched at an impressive 220 meters, offering vistas that stretch up to 82 kilometers in the distance. If you’ve got nerves of steel, you can lean against the slanted glass walls or even take a bold stroll on the glass floor.

The revolving restaurant atop the tower is an absolute delight. If you’ve snagged a reservation at either the Orbit 360 or Sugar Club restaurants, you’ll be treated to complimentary entry to the viewing deck as part of the experience.

If you’re after a bit of an adrenaline surge, try the SkyWalk that allows you to stroll around the tower’s outer edge, securely harnessed, while the truly adventurous can do a SkyJump for the ultimate adrenaline rush. You can jump off the 53rd floor at 192 meters high and safely land on your feet at ground level!

I’ve jumped off of taller stuff before but somehow the SkyJump was scarier. The sense of perspective gained from the Sky Tower far exceeded anything I’d felt when jumping into canyons or off bridges. Gazing down at buildings that appeared massive from the ground, their rooftops now distant made my heart skip a beat. Below them, people looked like tiny ants.

Britomart or Viaduct for lunch

Britomart and Viaduct are two of Auckland’s vibrant waterfront precincts. Both areas provide a lively and picturesque setting to explore the city’s culture, cuisine, and waterfront beauty.

Britomart is a chic urban center where heritage buildings blend seamlessly with contemporary boutiques, restaurants, and entertainment options. Just a stone’s throw away, Viaduct is a bustling harbor area filled with bars, restaurants, and beautiful views of the sparkling waters. In all honesty, you can’t go wrong with any of the restaurants here.

Auckland Maritime Museum

Docked at the lively Viaduct Harbour, Auckland Maritime Museum isn’t just about old ships – it’s a journey through New Zealand’s wild and wacky maritime past.

From Maori waka canoes to cutting-edge ships, you’ll discover the stories of adventurous sailors, fearless explorers, and, of course, a few maritime mishaps along the way. It’s not your average history lesson; it’s a hands-on, wind-in-your-hair kind of maritime adventure.

Viaduct Harbour

Auckland has been a host city for several editions of the prestigious America’s Cup yacht race. This is a big deal because the America’s Cup is one of the oldest and most prestigious trophies in international sailing.

Teams from around the world compete for the cup, and winning it is considered the pinnacle of yacht racing. You can get up close with the magnificent vessels and even hop aboard for a sailing adventure of your own.

Sail through Auckland Harbour

As you set sail on Waitemata Harbour, you’ll cruise past iconic sights such as the Auckland Bridge, Westhaven Marina, and Devonport. Sit back and relax while you enjoy the views, or roll up your sleeves and learn to sail.

You can opt for a quick 1.5-hour cruise or elevate your experience with a dinner on board. If you opt for the later you’ll enjoy a 3-course dinner while safely anchored in the heart of Westhaven Marina.

Then, as twilight descends, watch in awe as the Auckland’s skyline illuminates.

Waiheke Island, an island just off the coast of Auckland, is known for its stunning beaches and fantastic wineries. It is a popular escape from the busy city among locals and tourists alike.

In the morning, check out of your accommodation and make your way to the wharf to take the Passenger Ferry to Waiheke Island. The ferry goes every half an hour, takes about 45 minutes to get there. Buy your ferry ticket here .

You can start the day at the beach – either Oneroa Beach, which is a nicely sheltered beach but tends to get quite busy, or Onetangi Beach, the island’s largest beach that is great for swimming and has lots of cafés and restaurants around.

When you’ve soaked up enough sunshine, let’s taste some of that wine that Waiheke Island is so famous for! Book your hop-on, hop-off bus ticket to explore the wineries on your own or join this wine tasting tour if you’d like some company.

There are countless wineries to choose from, but Tantalus Estate also offer delicious craft beer on top of the wine. Alternatively, take a look at Obsidian. We love them for their down-to-earth simplicity and incredible wine.

In the evening everyone heads to Charlie Farley’s for a drink. Located right next to Onetangi Beach this is arguably the island’s most popular pub. We’re sure you’ll understand why once you’re sitting on their deck with a drink and watching the sunset.

Today you’ll be exploring a little bit more of Auckland, its outskirts, NZ marine life, and learn about Maori Culture. If you’re looking for a chill day, pick between the dolphin cruise and Mission Bay. But it’s also possible to do everything on the list today, you’ll just have to pick up the pace a bit.

Dolphin and Whale-Watching Eco-Safari

Hauraki Gulf Marine Park is pretty much an open-air aquarium, featuring five marine preserves and a constellation of islands. As one of the planet’s most biologically diverse marine parks, it serves as a habitat for approximately 23 distinct species, including a remarkable variety of six whale species.

This half-day catamaran tour from Viaduct Harbour takes you on a whale and dolphin watching safari. Keep an eye on the sky as well, as you might spot majestic seabirds like Australasian gannets, petrels, and terns, or even the adorable blue penguins.

Mission Bay

Mission Bay is Auckland’s go-to beach destination with a hefty dose of seaside charm. Hit the golden beach for a day of swimming, sunbathing, or beach volleyball with the locals. Or rent a kayak or even rent a SUP for an active adventure on the water.

When your appetite calls, head over to one of the cozy cafes or seafood restaurants along the promenade. De Fontaine is a great choice if you love beer and they have fantastic mussles too.

Sea Life Aquarium

Designed by the legendary explorer Kelly Tarlton over 30 years ago, the Sea Life Aquarium is a time-tested favorite attraction in Auckland, located just a skip and a hop from Mission Bay.

Discover the magic of the deep blue like never before with the world’s first-ever underwater viewing tunnels and marvel at the world’s largest Sub-Antarctic penguin colony exhibit, where these adorable creatures rule the ice. this is also the only aquarium worldwide where you can see Spiny Sea Dragons.

Get up close and personal with fascinating creatures, including colorful fish, majestic sharks, playful penguins, and mystical seahorses. Enjoy the interactive exhibits, touch pools, and informative talks.

Auckland Domain and War Memorial Museum

The Auckland War Memorial Museum showcases a diverse collection, including Maori and Pacific artifacts, natural history exhibits, and military memorabilia. It’s a place to learn about New Zealand’s history, culture, and natural world, all housed in a striking neoclassical building with great city views.

The entire lower level is dedicated to Māori culture. Artifacts include a giant canoe known as a “waka,” totems, weaponry, and a splendidly adorned Māori meeting house, or “wharenui.”

A visit to the Auckland Museum is excellent for gaining insight into the life and history of New Zealand’s original inhabitants. And it’s not all serious business either! There are dinosaurs involved, too. Yes, dinosaurs!

While you’re here, make sure to explore Auckland Domain, yet another beautiful park in Auckland City.

Auckland is built on top of 50 volcanoes, The highest of which is Mount Eden . This 196-meter high hill stands in the middle of the city. You can take public transport to the base of the hill or visit as part of this city tour.

Surrounded by lush greenery, Mount Eden Park is a lovely spot for a walk, especially on sunny days. However, the real highlight is the summit. From here, you can peer directly into the former volcanic crater and enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the entire city.

Rotorua is known for three things: the smell of sulfur (and accompanying geothermal landscapes), Maori culture, and as the Adventure Capital of the North Island. It is the perfect mix of nature, culture, adventure, cuisine, and otherworldly landscapes.

I love Rotorua so much that I’d suggest you pack up and head to Rotorua for a few days and follow this itinerary. It would be a great way to split your week.

However, when you’re short on time, this day tour of Rotorua from Auckland is the perfect introduction to this incredible destination and includes a visit to Te Puia.

If you’re a LOTR fan, opt for this Hobbiton and Rotorua trip for a visit to the Hobbiton Movie Set along with the magical Wai-O-Tapu Geothermal Wonderland.

For those on a time crunch, this tour of Rotorua, Hobbiton and Waitomo Caves has you covered. But if you can spare an additional day, I’d recommend you split this into two trips as it’s quite a lot for just one day.

Pristine golden beaches, secluded bays, misty rainforests, beautiful waterfalls and cliffside views make the Coromandel Peninsula an ideal destination for a memorable day trip. And the iconic Cathedral Cove is its crown jewel.

Cathedral Cove Beach is a true gem of New Zealand’s North Island. With its stunning natural archway and golden sands, this coastal paradise has graced many a postcard.

Getting there is a bit of a drive for just a day but oh-so-worth-it! Join this guided day tour to Cathedral Cove or, if you can spare a few days, explore Coromandel on your own accord.

Once in Ha Hei, you can reach Cathedral Cove via the Cathedral Cove track or via water by water taxi or on a kayak tour.

If you only have one day in Auckland, it will be a packed one. I’ve cut down on the galleries and museums in lieu of other experiences, but the Auckland Museum is one I believe you should not miss out on.

By Sea: Auckland’s harbor is a hub for cruise ships, making it a popular port of call for international cruise travelers. The ships dock in the heart of Auckland so exploring the city is easy, even on foot.

By Car: If you’re traveling from within New Zealand, you can conveniently reach Auckland by car, or motorhome. The city has an extensive road network, and major highways like State Highway 1 connect Auckland to other regions.

By Bus: Getting to Auckland by bus is a convenient and budget-friendly option for travelers within New Zealand. The city is well-connected to various regions through an extensive bus network and the bus stop is conveniently located within easy reach of the city center.

By Train: Auckland is also accessible by train, offering a relaxed and eco-friendly way to travel to the city. The scenic Northern Explorer train from Wellington is known for its breathtaking views, including picturesque countryside and coastal vistas.

Auckland boasts an efficient public transportation system, including buses, trains, and ferries, making it easy to explore the city and its surrounding areas. You can also rely on ride-sharing services and taxis for convenient and flexible transportation. This hop-on hop-off bus is a great way to explore the main highlights.

Auckland is a great destination year-round, but you’ll get longer days and warmer temperatures when visiting between mid-November to late April.

Over the past century, Auckland has seen an influx of Asian immigrants, adding to the already diverse population of the multicultural city. The diversity has created a wonderful variety in the activities there are to take part in, and the experiences you’ll be able to enjoy.

If you’re looking for a vibey city that is more than just a concrete jungle, visiting Auckland should be high on your list of places to go.

Whether you’re spending 3 days in Auckland or an entire week, this Auckland itinerary is sure to point you in the right direction and help you find the best spots in town.

Best Time To Visit Auckland

While planning your backpacking Auckland trip , you’ll need to know when the best time is to visit Auckland. While there’s no wrong time for your Auckland visit, there is a season to suit everybody’s individual preferences.

Between March and May, and between September and November are the shoulder months. This means you can expect fewer crowds than during peak season, but still experience delightful weather!

From December to February is the peak season, which means you’ll experience wonderfully sunny days, and get the chance to mingle and make friends with a variety of other tourists.

Between June and August is Auckland’s quiet season. The temperatures drop but aren’t too cold, and you can expect a decrease in accommodation costs as well as the price of tours and activities.

Where to stay in Auckland can be a hard decision. If you’re a first-time visitor to the city, we advise staying in Auckland CBD . The central business district is most accessible to public transport, making getting around a breeze. The area is also very walkable and many of the main attractions in the area are in very close proximity!

There is a wonderful variety of shopping centers, nightclubs, bars, restaurants, and cafes to explore in this area. If you enjoy the hustle and bustle of busy city living, this neighbourhood is for you.

The Viaduct, Auckland’s waterfront neighborhood, is another wonderful place to stay in Auckland. It offers a little more peace and quiet than the CBD, but is still highly walkable.

This area offers a great variety of luxury, as well as budget accommodation options with stunning views of the ocean! Staying in hostels or motels in Auckland is a great way to keep the costs down.

There is also a vibrant nightlife scene in the area, as well as shore-front shopping centers and markets that are loads of fun to explore.

Codi’s is located in the vibrant uptown area where you’ll be able to easily explore the museums, galleries, and retail shops that surround the hotel. The spa, fitness center, and rooftop pool all make this the perfect place to relax and rejuvenate during your weekend in Auckland!

Best Hostel in Auckland – Base Auckland

Base Auckland is one of the top 15 party hostels in the world and hosts a whole variety of free activities – ranging from free DJ lessons to yoga classes! They’re located in central Auckland, making it very easy to get around. If you’re up for karaoke and beer pong, this is the best hostel for you in Auckland.

Base Auckland is one of our favourites in Auckland but they’re not taking guests right now. We’re not sure if they’re closed for good but we hope they’ll come back soon.

If you’re taking a trip to Auckland, you’re going to need to know how to get around in order to reach all the destinations on your Auckland trip itinerary. While the city center is easily walkable, you’re going to need to make use of public transport for longer trips.

The most efficient and affordable way to travel through Auckland city is via Link Bus . These buses have three different routes, which are distinguishable by the color of the bus. Your bus fares can be paid in cash aboard the bus, or you can buy a day pass at the station if you’ll be making use of the buses all day.

Alternatively, you could purchase a HOP day pass which gives you access to unlimited bus, train, and inner harbor ferry rides for 24 hours.

If you want to visit Waiheke Island or neighborhoods like Devonport and Half Moon Bay, you’ll need to take a ferry. You can pay aboard the ferry or use your HOP card if you chose that option.

If you’re planning to travel outside of the city limits, then renting a car is always a great option and allows you to go on an Auckland road trip . Just bear in mind that Auckland has a very busy rush hour that takes place from 7am – 9am and 4pm – 6pm. Avoid the roads during these times if you can!

Now that you know how to get around, let’s take a look at some of the best places to visit in Auckland !

Auckland Domain | War Memorial Museum | Art Gallery | Maritime Museum | Silo Park | Night Market

On the first day of your Auckland itinerary, you’ll learn a lot about the history of the city, as well as get to know the locals a lot better!

Day 1 / Stop 1 – Stroll Through Auckland Domain

• Why it’s awesome: Auckland Domain is the city’s oldest park, and stretches an impressive 75 hectares – making it one of the city’s largest!
• Cost: Free!
• Food nearby: Rosie is a happening local cafe that opens early in the mornings. With a 6:30 opening time, you’ll have no problem grabbing a takeaway and still making it to Auckland Domain for sunrise.

There’s nothing better than a free activity to start your one day in Auckland! This unique park is located in the central suburb of Grafton and contains the explosion crater as well as most of the tuff ring of the Pukekawa volcano!

On the crater floor, you’ll find several sports fields, and on the rim, you’ll see the Auckland War Memorial Museum and a cricket pavilion.

There is a network of paths that wind their way through the park, making for a very interesting walk. You’ll venture into forested areas and into open grassy lands. It’s the perfect place to watch the sunrise with a cuppa joe in hand!

Day 1 / Stop 2 – Explore the Auckland War Memorial Museum

• Why it’s awesome: Learning about the city you’re visiting is a great way to understand the people of the area.
• Cost: USD $15 for adults, and USD $7 for children!
• Food nearby: Wintergarden Cafe is just a 4-minutes walk from the Auckland War Memorial Museum and is the perfect place to stop for brunch or a quick snack. There’s a lovely outdoor seating area that allows for great views of the ponds and luscious garden surrounds.

Despite the museum’s name, there’s lot to see here that isn’t related to war. This is a great spot to discover all things New Zealand, from volcanoes and butterflies to New Zealand’s history and culture.

You could quite easily lose track of time at this interesting museum that is home to a whole host of wonderful exhibitions. Many of the exhibitions are interactive, making it fun for the whole family! There are lots of travelling exhibits, too – check out the most current calendar here.

If you’re up for a day of learning while you’re touring Auckland, then a visit to the War Memorial Museum simply must be added to your Auckland itinerary.

Day 1 / Stop 3 – Browse the Auckland Art Gallery

• Why it’s awesome: The museum has the most extensive collection of local and international art in New Zealand!
• Cost: USD $13
• Food nearby: Amano is a chic restaurant that has become highly popular amongst the locals. They serve a delightful mix of wonderful meals, making it the perfect place to stop for lunch, no matter what you’re in the mood for! Be sure to order a cocktail and a small dessert with your meal, that way you’ll fit in with the hipsters that frequent this wonderful restaurant!

The Auckland Art Gallery was established in 1888 and was the very first permanent art gallery built in New Zealand.

When the gallery first opened, it mainly featured works from European masters, but now is home to an amazing collection of varied artworks, both permanent and travelling – in total, there are over 15,000 pieces at this amazing gallery.

Be sure to check their website before you visit, as the gallery frequently hosts temporary and travelling exhibitions.

Day 1 / Stop 4 – Visit the New Zealand Maritime Museum

• Why it’s awesome: The New Zealand Maritime Museum is a great place to learn about New Zealanders and their relationship with the sea.
• Food nearby: Euro Bar and Restaurant is situated in Viaduct Harbor, providing you with magnificent views of the sea and awesome seafood.

The New Zealand Maritime Museum is located next to the Viaduct Harbor in central Auckland. It’s home to exhibitions from throughout New Zealand’s history, from the first Polynesian explorers to modern day settlers. The museum was opened in 1993, just in time for the America’s Cup regatta which was held in Auckland that year.

Browse the many maritime artifacts, and learn about tall tales that are passed down from generation to generation in Mauri culture about the sea, and the sea god Tangaroa.

Learn about New Zealanders who have sailed the high seas and what those adventures meant to them. If you’re up for a little adventure of your own, there are boats that leave from the harbor frequently, why not hop on and create your own sea-fairing memories!

Insider Tip: Many boat trip tickets can be bought at the museum, so there’s no need to go out looking for a boat that’s wanting extra passengers. In summer, it’s best to book your tickets well in advance, which can be done on the museum website!

Day 1 / Stop 5 – Explore Silo Park

• Why it’s awesome: Spend some time in the heart of the city, and socialize with the hoards of locals that flock to this area every evening!
• Food nearby: Baduzzi is an Italian restaurant just a few minutes’ walk from Silo Park. They offer a cozy atmosphere and serve an incredible variety of dishes. We highly recommend indulging in a delicious dessert after your meal, as they take dessert to the next level!

Silo Park is one of the most happening places in the heart of the city. It appears to be an urban jungle, but when you take a closer look, it’s filled with fun and exciting activities to take part in.

Have a drink at one of the many bars surrounding the park – this is the ideal way to meet locals who are always keen to show new visitors around their city. There is also a basketball court, plenty of open space, and urban art scattered throughout the area!

Of course, Silo Park gets its name from the siloes that stands in the middle of it. In the summer months, a movie is projected onto the side of the silo each evening, giving locals and tourists alike wonderful free entertainment.

If you happen to be in Auckland during the summer months, be sure to stop by to watch a movie as the sun sets over the vibrant city. You’d truly be living like a local!

Day 1 / Stop 6 – Browse an Auckland Night Market

• Why it’s awesome: There is a night market every night of the week in Auckland, all you need to do is visit the Auckland Night Markets website to see where the market is!
• Food nearby: Indulge in a street food feast at booths across the market.

If you’re wondering what to do in Auckland during your first night in the city, then browsing a night market is the answer! There is a night market every day of the week, so you’ll never have to miss out – check the full schedule here.

The night markets generally have a delicious collection of street food and locally brewed beers, as well as other items such as clothing, jewelry, and other trinkets.

The night markets are some of the most exciting points of interest in Auckland, and are a great place to meet new people and make travel buddies for life!

Insider Tip: It’s best to venture to the night markets after the sun has set, as this is when the market starts to get vibrant!

On your second day in Auckland, you’ll be exploring the city, and spending a ton of your day outside to enjoy that beautiful Auckland weather.

Day 2 / Stop 1 – Feed the Ducks at Western Springs Park

• Why it’s awesome:  This scenic park also features a zoo, stadium, museums, and lots of ducks!
• Food nearby: Honey Bones is a lovely coffee shop that opens early in the morning, ready to serve you your early bird cuppa joe, breakfasts and pastries.

Start your morning off the right way by visiting one of the many beautiful suburban parks in Auckland! The park is filled with interesting things to do and see, and a central pond that’s home to lots of ducks.

Take a stroll through the park enjoying the scenery and getting some fresh air in your lunges. In the park you’ll also see Auckland Zoo, Western Springs Stadium, and the Museum of Transport and Technology.

Insider Tip: The earlier you get to the park the better! Birds chatter in the park as the sun rises and it is perhaps one of the most relaxing and tranquil experiences you can encounter in Auckland.

Day 2 / Stop 2 – Spend Time in the Auckland Botanic Gardens

• Why it’s awesome: This is a must-see destination for fans of flora and fauna – and it smells amazing.
• Cost: Free entry!
• Food nearby: Cafe Miko is the perfect place to go for a mid-morning snack and coffee.

The gardens are an impressive 64 hectares, and the garden was opened to the public in 1982. Ever since then, locals and tourists alike have been thoroughly enjoying the grounds and blooming flowers on display here. The gardens are actually home to more than 10,000 species of plants.

There are a few different sections to the garden, which makes it all the more interesting. Enjoy the wonderful aromas that transcend from the rose garden, or stroll through the lush indigenous forest. It’s a perfect spot for a mid-morning stroll.

If you’re in Auckland with kids, there’s also a children’s potter garden here that is sure to keep them well entertained!

Day 2 / Stop 3 – Indulge Your Senses in Food Alley

• Why it’s awesome: Food alley is a wonderful bazaar that serves up a myriad of flavors in their eastern cuisine.
• Cost: Free to visit!
• Food nearby: There’s food everywhere here – come hungry!

Food Alley is a popular food bazaar – basically a food court – that’s consistently delicious and well-established in the community – plus, it’s just a short walk from Viaduct Harbor.

There are a whole variety of eastern foods on offer, that include Thai, Indian, Malaysian, Indonesian, Korean, Japanese and Vietnamese. Go with a group and try a little of everything!

Don’t worry, there’s lots of vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and dairy-free options available here too.

Day 2 / Stop 4 – Picnic in Cornwall Park

• Why it’s awesome: Cornwall Park is located in the heart of Auckland in the suburb of Epsom.
• Food nearby: Cornwall Park Cafe is located conveniently in Cornwall Park, and is the perfect place to grab a takeaway for a picnic in the park.

Cornwall Park contains centuries-old heritage sites, grassy fields, tranquil walkways, sports grounds, working farmlands, and even a children’s education center. To say you can’t run out of things to do here is an understatement! This is a place that is buzzing with activity.

The park stretches an impressive 670 acres and provides the perfect setting for an afternoon picnic. If you forget your basket, don’t worry – there are cafes and restaurants surrounding the park that’ll make it easy to pick something up and set up a picnic in the shade.

If you’re up for something a little more active during your visit to Cornwall Park, then try walking along the tranquil paths that wind their way through the park, or join in on one of the sports games being played on the fields! There are so many reasons locals love this park, and you will too!

Day 2 / Stop 5 – Enjoy Spectacular Views From the Sky Tower

• Why it’s awesome: The Sky Tower is used for observation as well as telecommunications in Auckland!
• Food nearby: Orbit 360-degree dining is a revolving restaurant in the Sky Tower that rotates 360 degrees every hour. This allows you to see every angle of the city while your dining in absolute luxury!

The Sky Tower is located within Auckland’s Central Business District and stands an impressive 328 meters tall. It’s the tallest freestanding structure in the Southern Hemisphere, naturally making it an Auckland landmark you can’t miss!

The lower half of the building is a casino complex, so if you’re feeling lucky, be sure to try your hand at the slot machines or the poker table!

The upper portion of the Sky Tower contains two restaurants and a cafe, which are perfectly situated to give you a wonderful, panoramic view of Auckland during your dinner. There are also three observation decks at different heights throughout the building. If you’re not afraid of heights, seek out the one with the glass floor!

For the really brave, the Sky Tower is also home to the Sky Jump . This is a 192-meter bungee jump, which allows jumpers to travel at speeds of up to 85 kilometers per hour. The jump is guide-cable-controlled, which ensures jumpers don’t collide with the building on a windy day.

The best time to visit the Sky Tower in the late afternoon or evening, as this is when you’ll be able to enjoy the magnificent sunset views. Get your camera ready!

If you’re planning a trip to Auckland that’s a little longer than 2 days, you’ll need a few more activities to add to your Auckland itinerary. Here are a few extra things to do in Auckland that are sure to spruce up your holiday!

Coast to Coast Walk

• Enjoy stunning views of Auckland
• See both coasts of Auckland
• Get plenty of fresh air

The Coast to Coast Walk is a 16-kilometer hike across Auckland. The walk takes you through 600 years of settlements belonging to the Mauri people. You’ll see how the people of the city have shaped the landscape into what it is today, and how the city has expanded!

Along the way, you’ll take in stunning views of natural heritage sites, as well as man-made heritage sites. You’ll see rolling hills, luscious forest vegetation, and magnificent views over the city below.

The walk should take you around 2 – 3 hours, but it’s recommended that you set aside a little more time, so that you can make a few stops along the way, and treasure the fascinating scenery.

If you’re looking for the perfect Auckland walking tour, this is it!

You’ll start your walk at Waitemata Harbor and work your way to the other coast along the designated path. We recommend setting out early in the morning in order to catch the sunrise, and the cooler morning air. Alternatively, you can set out in the evening, and time your walk to catch sunset at Manukau, which is the endpoint of the walk.

Explore the North Head Tunnels

• Explore old military tunnels and bunkers
• In the Devonport area

If you love military history, exploring the old military tunnels and bunker in North Head is a must during the time you have in Auckland. The tunnels were used from 1885 by the coastal defense force, but have now been left for locals and visitors to explore at their leisure!

There are rumors of hidden caverns beneath the hills, so if you meet a local in Auckland, be sure to ask them about the tales of this area.

If you decide to explore the tunnels, be sure to take a flashlight with you, and it’s advised that you don’t go alone – just in case!

If you’re scared of the dark, or get claustrophobic easily then it’s probably best you don’t explore the tunnels, but you can still explore the area and visit the ‘Big Gun’!

Walk Down Tamaki Drive

• One of the most popular streets in Auckland
• Auckland’s waterfront route
• Minutes from the CBD

Tamaki Drive is a long road that stretches the length of Auckland’s eastern beaches. It has a dedicated cycling lane, as well as a lane for walkers, joggers, runners, and skaters. You’ll see plenty of energized locals enjoying the fresh sea breeze and beautiful scenery here.

While you’re walking along in the pedestrian bay, look out over the harbor for stunning views of the volcanic Rangitoto Island.

The most popular beach along the route is called Mission Bay. The beach is expansive, perfect for a picnic or sunbathing excursion.

If you’re looking for a beach that’s a little quieter, head to Kohimarama Beach for a sense of calm and tranquility. Listen to the waves gently lapping at the shore, and take in views that are equally as stunning as the shoreline!

At the end of the road, you’ll find a small collection of shops, which offer the perfect opportunity to get in a little retail therapy before heading back to your hotel!

Visit Goat Island

• Approximately 1 hectare in size
• Located north of Auckland
• Directly west of Little Barrier Reef

Goat Island is located within the Cape Rodney-Okakari Point Marine Reserve, which was the first marine reserve of its kind in New Zealand! You can catch a boat ride from any of Auckland’s harbors on the north side. There are plenty of tours that explore the island, but it’s also doable on your own.

Take a snorkel and some goggles with you, as you’re sure to see a whole variety of beautiful marine life. Seeing as Goat Island is within close proximity to Little Barrier Reef, there is a good chance you’ll spot colorful coral and tropical fish that will blow your mind!

Venture onto the island itself for a few other interesting sights, too – there are walking paths to lead you through the thick foliage. Keep your eyes open for animals and birds on your way!

Cycle Along the Nelson Street Cycleway

• Historically significant, old motorway
• Magenta-colored road
• Interactive lights

The Nelson Street Cycleway is in fact an old motorway that has been painted magenta, making it very unique. It’s now used for cyclists and pedestrians only.

Along the sides of the cycleway are interactive lights that contain censors so they switch on when a cyclist is near, which is especially cool at night.

Because of that, we recommend renting a bicycle and tackling the cycleway at dusk. This way you’ll experience the best of both worlds – you’ll see the magenta road in all its glory, as well as trigger the pretty lights that will illuminate your path after the sun sets.

Auckland is always coming up with creative ideas to turn unused spaces into works of art that not only are pretty to look at but serve a purpose. If you’re up for a little exercise during your time in Auckland, this scenic cycleway is waiting for you!

Auckland is heavily populated, and being so beautiful, it attracts visitors from around the world! While it’s generally very safe, there are a few things that you should watch out for during your time in Auckland.

Petty crimes are the main danger in Auckland. Be sure to keep your valuables safely secured at all times, especially in crowded areas. Pick-pockets are commonplace in this area, so we recommend using a waist bag, or other means to keep your valuables safe.

It’s also best not to walk around quiet areas at night, as this makes you an easy target. It’s best to stick to the busier areas and to always travel with someone if you’re venturing into a quieter area.

Drinking and driving has become a big problem in Auckland, and all over New Zealand. When getting into a taxi, make sure that the driver of the vehicle is 100% sober before departing. If you’re renting a vehicle be sure not to drink and drive.

You’ll then stop for lunch at the Shire’s Rest Cafe for a true Kiwi-style lunch, before continuing on your tour.

After luck, you’ll experience the magical glow of thousands of glow worms as you enter the Waitomo Caves by boat. Marvel at the stalactites and stalagmites and learn about the nature in this totally unique ecosystem. Cool!

Waiheke Island Day Trip From Auckland

Board the ferry in Auckland and enjoy an amazing wine tasting tour on Waiheke Island.

You’ll meet your host at the ferry pier in Waiheke, but he can help you book the ferry tickets from Auckland in advance.

Then, it’s time to enjoy the culinary side of the island. You’ll be taken to a local winery with an amazing view, where you’ll start off with High Tea, wine tasting and great conversations. Ask your host anything about the local wine, and he’ll be happy to teach you whatever you want to know.

Afterwards you’ll be heading down to the Waiheke Town center to do some shopping, explore the city and go on a little beach walk.

Piha Beach Day Trip From Auckland

This 6 hour walking tour will keep you on your feet and entertained throughout the whole time. You guide will take you to three amazing hot spots, that are mostly missed out on by other guided tours companies.

Explore the rainforest first, Aucklands Subtropical Wilderness. You’ll see beautiful swimming caves, as well as a waterfall. Don’t worry, there’s no rush, you can stay as long as you want. Afterwards, you’ll be heading to a trail on the top of a mountain range. Enjoy amazing views and a bit of peace and quite since not many tourist are seen up there. The last stop is Pina Beach, where you can roam around freely and enjoy a sunset towards the late afternoon.

In my opinion, 3 days is enough time to enjoy the highlights of Auckland.

Is Auckland worth visiting?

There is a lot to see and do in Auckland, plus it’s international airport means it’s likely to be your first destination of a New Zealand trip. I would say it is definitely worth visiting for a few days, even if to shake off the jet lag.

What is the top thing to do in Auckland?

One of the most popular attractions in Auckland is Sky Tower, which features amazing views of the city, a restaurant and bungee jumping.

What should I not miss off my Auckland itinerary?

If you have time, a coastal walk is one of my favourite things to do in Auckland. The Coast to Coast Walk is a 16km hike, but you don’t have to do all of it.

Whether you’re up for a holiday of adventure and exploration while backpacking New Zealand , or vacation that allows you to sit back and relax while you enjoy the luxuries – Auckland most certainly has something for you!

It’s not often that you’re surrounded by sub-tropical jungle and paradisiacal beach locations all in the same holiday, but this wonderful city allows you to enjoy the best of both worlds. A bustling nightlife also provides great opportunities to party the night away! Just make sure you find a nice place to cure your hangover – maybe in one of Auckland’s amazing hostels ?

No matter what you’re looking for, this Auckland itinerary is sure to have something that tickles your fancy. Because of the great diversity in this region, there’s never a dull moment!

Visas and entry requirements

All visitors require passports valid for at least three months after the date they intend to leave the country.

Visas are also required; however, many countries have a reciprocal visa waiver agreement with New Zealand and nationals of these countries can stay in on the visa waiver programme for three months. Visa requirements differ depending on nationality, purpose of visit and length of stay. Visitors must produce an onward or return ticket and sufficient funds to support themselves during their stay. Check with the New Zealand diplomatic or consular office in your country of residence or at www.immigration.govt.nz .

Getting to New Zealand

New Zealand has direct air links with the Pacific Islands, all major Australian cities, many Southeast Asian destinations, and cities in North America and Europe. Passengers arriving on long-haul flights should allow themselves a couple of rest days on arrival. Most major airlines fly to New Zealand including Qantas, Emirates, Thai Airlines, Singapore Airlines and United Airlines. Air New Zealand is the national carrier.

As New Zealand is isolated, air travel is expensive. However, good deals are available for flying in the shoulder seasons or off-peak. Note that a departure tax of NZ$25 (NZ$10 for children under 12) is payable on leaving New Zealand.

International airports within New Zealand include:

Hamilton Airport (HLZ; tel: 07-848 9027; www.hamiltonairport.co.nz ) is located on Airport Road, 14km (8.5 miles) from Hamilton city centre. 

Queenstown Airport (QTN; tel: 03-450 9031; www.queenstownairport.co.nz ). 

Wellington Airport (WLG; tel: 04-385 5100; www.wellington-airport.co.nz ) is located on Stewart Duff Drive, 5.5km (3.5 miles) southeast of Wellington’s Central Business District.

A few cruise ships visit New Zealand, but there is no regular passenger ship service. Most cruises in the South Pacific originate in Australia, including P&O Line (tel: 0800-780 716; www.pocruises.co.nz ) which regularly travels to New Zealand, mostly between November and April.

Getting Around New Zealand

The best way to get around New Zealand is to hire a vehicle. However, coach services are regular and provide a good second option. Train services are extremely limited. Ferry crossings between New Zealand’s two largest islands form a part of most visitors’ travel plans so if you plan to rely on public transport, consider buying a travel pass that allows a combination of bus, train, ferry and plane travel nationwide at a substantial discount. One such deal is the New Zealand Travelpass from InterCity Group (NZ) Ltd (tel: 09-583 5788; www.intercity.co.nz ). The pass can be purchased online and used over 12 months. Tranz Scenic (tel: 04-495 0775; www.tranzscenic.co.nz ) offers a 7-day and 14-day Scenic Rail Pass for train travel either in the North or South Island, or throughout both islands, with an optional ferry crossing.

Domestic Flights

Air New Zealand, Qantas and Virgin Blue/Pacific Blue are the main domestic carriers. Air New Zealand flies to every main centre nationwide, while Qantas and Virgin Blue/Pacific Blue provide flights between the cities of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown. It takes 40 minutes to fly from Auckland to Wellington, and 1 hour to fly from Auckland to Christchurch. Wellington to Christchurch takes 30 minutes.Domestic flights can be expensive, but good deals are always available online.

Modern ferries operated by two competing companies, Interislander (tel: 04-498 3302; www.greatjourneysofnz.co.nz ) and Bluebridge (tel: 0800-844 844; www.bluebridge.co.nz ), link the North and South Islands. The ferries sail between Wellington and Picton and carry passengers, vehicles and freight. There are frequent daily crossings in both directions, but it is important to book vehicle space in advance during summer. The journey time takes about three hours depending on sea conditions. Ferry tickets can be purchased at NZ Post Shops, travel agents and visitor information centres.

A passenger ferry operated by Stewart Island Experience (tel: 0800-000 511; www.stewartislandexperience.co.nz ) departs daily from Bluff, connecting Stewart Island with the South Island.

Passenger ferries (departing from the terminal behind the Ferry Building on Quay Street, Auckland) service Great Barrier Island and Waiheke Island as well as vehicular ferries. By international standards the New Zealand rail network is extremely limited. The infrastructure is there, however rail is mainly used for freight. To travel the country completely by rail is not an option. The New Zealand government has set aside money to improve the rail network, so over time, things may change. In the meantime the following limited services are available.

Tranz Scenic (tel: 04-495 0775; www.tranzscenic.co.nz ) offers three routes, one in the North Island and two in the South Island. Trains are outfitted with an onboard dining car serving light meals and beverages.

Tranz Alpine: This scenic train journey is also offered as a return one-day trip, and travels between Christchurch and Greymouth.

Tranz Coastal: This train travels along the coast and connects Christchurch with the inter-island ferries at Picton.

The Overlander: This service runs between Wellington and Auckland.

Tickets can be purchased online, and from travel agents and visitor information centres. A Scenic Rail Pass allows hop-on/hop-off travel aboard all Tranz Scenic trains.

Intercity Coaches

There is an excellent inter-city coach network throughout the country, using modern and comfortable coaches equipped with toilets. The major bus operators are InterCity Coachlines (tel: 09-623 1503; www.intercity.co.nz ); the Naked Bus (tel: 0900 62533; www.nakedbus.co.nz ); and Kiwi Experience (tel: 09-366 9830; www.kiwiexperience.co.nz ). Travel and information centres throughout New Zealand can book bus tickets and multi-day pass tickets; alternatively, you can book online.

If you are fit, cycling is another good way to get around New Zealand. However, as the countryside is extremely mountainous, you may wish to sit some sectors out, and travel aboard a coach. Backpacker transport operators such as Kiwi Experience (tel: 09-366 9830; /www.kiwiexperience.com ) can arrange bike hire and issue vouchers that allow you to transport your bike on their buses.

Bikes are hired out all over the country, and are a fantastic way to get around New Zealand’s smaller towns. Ten-speed bikes and tandems can be hired for sightseeing in most cities, while resorts such as Queenstown and Taupo also rent out mountain bikes. Safety helmets are compulsory, and are included in the rental price.

The South Island’s Canterbury Plains provide easy flat cycling, as does the city of Christchurch. Alternatively, you can join multi-day guided cycle tours and your luggage with be transported by van to lodgings along the way. Touring the country by car or campervan is one of the best ways to see New Zealand’s extremely diverse landscape. However, it is worth noting that some journeys travel on winding roads through hill country, and therefore the time to travel from one place to another can take a lot longer than you may expect.

Road Conditions

Multi-lane highways are very few – they only provide immediate access to and through major cities – and narrow, single-lane highways and roads are the norm. Main road surfaces are good and conditions are usually comfortable; the main problems you might encounter are slips, rock falls, dead possums, flocks of sheep and herds of cows, so go carefully. On most journeys you are never more than 50km (31 miles) away from the nearest petrol station. Watch out for New Zealanders' tendency to overtake on the inside lane (there is no law preventing this) and blocking what should be used as a passing lane.

Regulations

You can legally drive in New Zealand for up to 12 months if you have a current driver’s licence from your home country or an International Driving Permit (IDP). You must be able to prove you hold a valid overseas licence and drive only those types of vehicles for which you were licensed in your country of origin. You must carry your licence or permit with you whenever you are driving.

Traffic keeps to the left. Drivers must yield (give way) to every vehicle approaching or crossing from their right. Seat belts are compulsory. Helmets are compulsory for motorcyclists and sidecar passengers. Maximum speed limits are 50kmh (30mph) in built-up areas unless otherwise indicated, 100kmh (60mph) on open roads. 

Drink-driving penalties are tough, regardless of where you are from. Care should be taken not to exceed the limit of 0.8g of alcohol for each litre of blood.

Roadside Assistance

The Automobile Association (AA; tel: 0800-500 543; www.aa.co.nz ) provides nationwide breakdown assistance as well as a comprehensive range of services for motorists. Reciprocal arrangements may be available for those holding membership of foreign motoring organisations.

Vehicle Hire

To hire a vehicle, you must be 21 years of age or over and hold a current New Zealand or international driver’s licence. Third-party insurance is compulsory, although most hire companies will insist on full insurance cover before hiring out their vehicles.

Accessibility

Law requires every new building or major reconstruction in New Zealand to provide ‘reasonable and adequate’ access for people with disabilities. Most facilities have wheelchair access, but it pays to check when booking. Parking concessions are available for people with disabilities and temporary display cards can be issued for the length of the visitor’s stay. Health and Safety

Medical care.

No vaccinations are required to enter New Zealand and there are no endemic diseases to be aware of. New Zealand’s medical and hospital facilities, both public and private, provide a high standard of treatment and care. However, visitors are charged for tax-payer funded health care so health insurance is highly recommended. 

Any ineligible patient who seeks general specialist treatment at a hospital – whether it is a public or a private hospital – or any medical centre will be prioritised alongside eligible patients if there is spare capacity. The estimated cost must be paid in advance and any additional costs paid at the end of the treatment.

However, all visitors are entitled to initial, free acute (emergency) care following an accident, regardless of fault, and this is covered by the government-run Accident Compensation Scheme (ACC). Free care is also provided by the NZ government for any visitor who has been admitted to hospital under a compulsory treatment order issued under the Tuberculosis Act, the Mental Health Act, or the Alcoholism and Drug Addiction Act. To acquire medical care for non-emergencies, full instructions for obtaining assistance are printed in the front of telephone directories. Hotels and motels normally have individual arrangements with duty doctors for guests’ attention.

Pharmacies, or chemists, are found in most towns of a reasonable size and generally open 8.30am–5.30pm weekdays and until 12 noon on Saturdays. Some are also open for one late night a week. No single pharmacy remains open 24/7; this task is a shared responsibility and public hospitals, listed below, will advise which pharmacies are on duty on any given night. Some drugs sold over the counter in other countries may not be available without a prescription – this will involve a visit to a medical centre to obtain one.

Natural Hazards

New Zealand is noted for its high level of ultraviolet radiation and the brilliance of its light. This means you may develop severe sunburn resulting in sunstroke, even on days when there is cloud cover, or when the temperature may seem deceptively low. It is important to wear sunscreen lotions, a hat, sunglasses and protective clothing during the summer, particularly between 11am and 4pm when the sun’s rays are most fierce.

There are no snakes or dangerous wild animals in New Zealand, although a bite from the native red-backed katipo spider and introduced white-tail spider may require medical attention. Sandflies and mosquitoes are prevalent in some areas, however insect repellents are widely available.

Weather conditions can change very rapidly in New Zealand, so before setting out to explore a National Park, always check with the Department of Conservation (DOC) office and equip yourself with proper walking shoes and all-weather clothing.

Tap water in New Zealand is safe to drink and is of a high quality. However, it is not wise to drink untreated water from lakes and streams, or to fill up drink bottles in public toilets, as it may be plumbed from a stream. In National Parks, DOC signs will state whether water sources are safe to drink or if they require boiling first.

New Zealand is considered to be one of the safer countries in the world for travellers and suffers only isolated incidences of serious crime. However, petty crime is a problem. Take precautions to secure and conceal your valuables at all times, and never leave them in a car. Make sure camper vans are well secured and don’t leave valuable possessions on the beach while you swim.

To report a crime, contact the nearest police station where you will find police who are approachable and helpful. New Zealand police carry tazer stun guns, and the special force within the police known as the armed offenders squad, only called upon in emergencies, are heavily armed.

Drugs offences, particularly if they relate to harder drugs, are treated very seriously. Marijuana is widely available but remains illegal.

Hitchhiking alone or in isolated places is not advisable.

Money and Budgeting

The New Zealand dollar (NZ$), divided into 100 cents, is the sole unit of currency. Currency exchange facilities are available at Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch international airports, as well as most banks and bureaux de change in the larger cities and resorts.

There is no restriction on the amount of domestic or foreign currency (or traveller’s cheques in New Zealand dollars) a visitor may bring into or take out of New Zealand. The New Zealand dollar is frequently called ‘the kiwi’ because the dollar coin features a kiwi, the national bird, on one side.

Flights to New Zealand from the UK range from NZ$1,200 (£552; US$852) and from the US NZ$750 (£345; US$532) for an economy-class one-way ticket, through to NZ$5,000 (£2,300; US$3,550) for a first-class ticket, one-way. During the high season (December to March) the same tickets will cost an extra NZ$800–1,000 (£368–460; US$568–710) for economy-class travel, or an extra $1,000–1,500 (£460–690; US$710–1,065) for first-class travel.

For a budget, backpacker-style holiday (including transport costs) you will need to set aside NZ$500–700 (£230–322/US$355–497) per person per week. A standard family holiday for four will cost around NZ$2,000–2,300 (£920–1,058/US$1,420–1,633) per week. A luxury, no-expense-spared break can cost over $7,000–10,000 (£3,220–4,600/US$4,970–7,100) per person per week.

Money-saving Tips

• A number of coach companies offer passes along the routes they operate, either with unlimited stops along a fixed line or a certain number of travel days within a set time frame

• Look out for transport passes that include ferry and train journeys as these offer good value

• Discounts of up to 15 percent apply to seniors, students, backpackers and children on transport costs

• Early-bird coach fares starting from $1 are often available online

• Activity and museums discounts are offered to travelling students but you will need to ask. Acceptable identification is required such as an International Student Identity Card or International Youth Travel Card ( www.isic.org ).

• The Youth Hostel Association ( www.yha.co.nz ) is widely recognised in New Zealand and its members receive discounts of 10 to 25 percent on coach travel, adventure activities and shopping. Visit the website, click on membership, then on member discounts to see a sample list of savings.

•  Make the most of every beach, National Park, Forest Park, scenic reserve and botanic garden as all are free to visit

• Look out for small country museums and community-run enterprises that request a gold coin koha/donation (a $1 or $2 coin)

• Choose adventure activities that include the cost of lunch or dinner as these are often good value

• Look out for special multi-attraction deals on offer in larger cities and key tourist destinations; the local i-Site visitor information centre will provide assistance

• Major discounts (sometimes up to half price or more) are available for children and senior citizens. Children under 5 are often free, while children under 3 years almost always are, so long as – where applicable – they are riding on your lap

Tourist visitor information centres (i-Sites) and car-hire companies distribute free maps. The New Zealand Automobile Association also produces regional maps and excellent district maps; a nominal sum is charged for North and South Island maps. Hema Maps, Wises Maps and the Shell Road Atlas are also widely available.
