short trips for toddlers

Valais region, Switzerland

The first recommendation for a toddler-friendly destination is from Corina, founder, and writer at  Packed Again . She wrote “Having twin toddlers, I feel it is a must to choose your destination where the kids can be outside in nature, and there’s no better place than Switzerland to find this.

The  Valais region is in the heart of the Swiss Alps  and there is no shortage of picnic places near a stream, playgrounds or even a great lake. Just perfect for our toddlers to get dirty, throw as many stones in the water as they can and build bridges with branches. On top of all, we might be able to spot one or two mountain animals in a magnificent and safe surrounding. For me, it is the perfect toddler destination.”

Etosha National Park, Namibia

Jenny from  Travelynn Family  has experience traveling in Africa with kids.  She tells us “Yes, you can take toddlers on safari!”

Earlier this year we traversed Africa in a Land Rover with our boys (our youngest was 2) for almost 4 months. We took them on a lot of safaris, but Etosha National Park, Namibia, was definitely the best one for his age group. Firstly it’s very affordable (kids are free!), and wildlife spotting is easy due to the vast open plains, lack of vegetation, and an abundance of wildlife. In fact, the entire country is a fantastic family destination and you may like to read our  10 reasons to visit Namibia with kids .”

Colorado USA

We couldn’t help but include our beloved state of Colorado.  Although the entire state is beautiful, we suggest Glenwood Springs for Toddlers.  Situated just 3 hours from Denver, this little town at the confluence of the Roaring Fork and Colorado River is a perfect place for families.

Hot Springs, waterfall hikes, roller coasters, and skiing all in one area.  You can combine this with a trip to Aspen or Vail.  The best way to experience the town is to stay at the historic Hotel Colorado or in an RV.   You can even rent easily nearby at Outdoorsy with this  $50 off coupon .

Nice, France

Shanna from  There and Back Again Family Travel Blog  suggests families with toddlers should visit Nice, France.

“Nice is a cute as a button town in the south of France on the Mediterranean Sea.  It is a perfect escape for a family with toddlers because of its manageable size, easy public transport options and abundance of easy, kid-friendly day trips.

We loved shopping at the Cours Saleya market in Nice for goodies, having picnics and playing at the Promenade du Paillon (a huge park, playground and green space at the heart of the city) and exploring Nice’s narrow, cobbled streets and alleyways.”

Barcelona, Spain

Traveling with a baby and toddler,   Diana from The Elusive Family , was able to recommend Barcelona, Spain based on personal experience.

“Sitting on the coast of the Mediterranean, Barcelona offers toddlers the opportunity to run amuck on La Rambla or explore the majestic L’Aquarium Barcelona, our top pick for toddlers. Boasting the largest sea tunnel in Europe, L’Aquarium is a perfect place to spend the afternoon watching sharks, sea turtles and hundreds of species swim in a vast Oceanarium.”

Keri Hedrick from  Family Travel in the Middle East   responded: “Dubai is a city crying out to be explored by families. Toddlers will love the huge variety of waterparks and splash parks available across the city from Duplo Splash Safari at Legoland Waterpark to the Splashers area of Atlantis, designed specifically for smaller kids.

The beach and resort weather is great almost year around, however, in the absolute hottest summer months there are still plenty of indoor activities too.  The huge Kidzania and Dubai Aquarium at Dubai Mall are always a hit, as is Mattel Playtown at City Walk ideal for youngsters.

Don’t forget to check out a desert safari during your stay which will include an opportunity to ride a camel – and top your visit off with the spectacular light and sound fountain show outside Burj Khalifa every night.”

Chicago, Illinois

Catherine from  Traveling with the Littles  suggests that  “If the weather is agreeable the best places to take toddlers are Millennium Park and Maggie Daley Park.

Located in the heart of downtown Chicago, both places are great for small children to stretch their legs!  Millennium Park boasts the ‘Bean’ which is an enormous reflective metal ‘bean’ in which toddlers can admire their reflections and scamper about. Also found in Millennium Park is Crown Fountain, an interactive five-story fountain that periodically shoots water out onto waiting children.  Maggie Daley Park’s Play Garden is replete with a colossal playground, a ‘Watering Hole,’ a boardwalk, and an ‘Enchanted Forest.”

Sanur, Bali, Indonesia

Kate Comer from  Rolling Along With Kids  explains that “Exploring South East Asia with toddlers can be tricky.

Sanur, located on the island of Bali in Indonesia , is easy to navigate with toddlers and you can also enjoy the beautiful culture that Bali has to offer. The flat, paved beach path is easy to walk along with young kids. Our favorite way to spend time in Sanur is to visit one of the many beach clubs with pools and playgrounds located along the beach path.”

Seattle, Washington, USA

I have to agree with Astrid from  The Wandering Daughter  when she recommends  Seattle, Washington for toddlers .  She wrote a guide on her blog and summarized the city for us.

“The city of Seattle, WA offers families with toddlers plenty of options to explore and play. With over 400 outdoor parks and play areas, as well as family-friendly museums, there is no shortage of things to do for families in Seattle.

By far the best spot for families to visit in the city is the Seattle Center, with its giant fountain for water play, art and music inspired playground, and the iconic Space Needle offering panoramic views of the city. Also not to be missed is the Children’s Museum, where toddlers can engage with hands-on educational exhibits.”

Note from Family Travel Fever:  We love Seattle and have spent time visiting the city and surrounding area.  We have even taken our RV on the Ferry across the water.  If you are looking for places to stay in Seattle you will find great deals and reviews on our  Booking link here.

La Paz, Bolivia

After 4 months of traveling around South America,  Amanda at  Great Big Family Adventure  recommends La Paz, Bolivia as a perfect destination in South America for toddlers.

“For a 1 to 3-year-old,  La Paz, Bolivia  would be cool. It is a large city but connected by cable cars which are fun and cheap. There is a large Central Park with amusement rides and a large boardwalk over the city to Pipiripi, the local Children’s museum with lots of exciting hands-on activities for children of all ages and parents too!”

Note from Family Travel Fever:  Bolivia has so many exciting places to stay.  You can try a hotel, a B&B or private rental for your family. Get the best deals and reviews for  La Paz at our booking link here.

Reykjavik, Iceland

With a roundup of their own, the  Wandermust Family  wrote that  “Iceland is a really hot (well not literally) family travel destination right now!  I was worried when we went that it wouldn’t live up to the hype but I can happily report that it did not disappoint!

Whether you are traveling in Winter or summer, staying in Reykjavik or going beyond the Golden Circle there is just so much to do with kids!  Our favorite thing was exploring all of the outdoor activities like chasing waterfalls, discovering black sand beaches and meeting Icelandic horses!  It is a great outdoor adventure holiday for all the family”

Tokyo, Japan

When asked for a recommendation for destinations in Asia,  Wisterian Watertree   wrote “The biggest city in the world is also one of the toddler-friendliest. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of sights accessible with a stroller.

Everything from thousand-year-old temples to high-tech marvels like the tallest TV tower in the world all sits along trains and subway lines, which makes getting around an easy project, even on rainy days. And there are public parks and playgrounds dotting the cityscape everywhere. On top of that, this is the city in the world which has the most Michelin stars – but any everyday meal will be as tasty as a feast in a far more expensive Japanese restaurant in your home country.

One of our favorite things is going to see the different shrines of Tokyo, especially during a festival. Your kids can participate and there are typically lots of interesting foods and activities to try – from shooting ranges with actual cork guns to enormous griddles full of okonomiyaki in the making.”

New York, New York USA

Based on their own time in the big city, Cath at  Passports and Adventures  recommends  New York City.

“New York is a great city to visit with toddlers. We visited with our two-year-old son and found plenty of toddler-friendly activities to do. Such as a water ferry ride around the tip of Manhattan, a trip to the 86 th  floor of the Empire State Building and even a trip around Central Park.

The bright lights of Times Square will fascinate them, just be aware of the noise level for them. With museums, plenty of hotels, and restaurants and diners galore, New York is definitely a city that can be visited with toddlers.”

Note from Family Travel Fever:  The Bronx  Zoo is on our bucket list to take the kids. But finding a place to stay in New York City could be tricky.  If you are planning a trip you can find the locations of places to stay, the best deals and tons of reviews on our  booking link here.

Tuscany, Italy

When asked, Marta from  Learning Escapes , replied you should pick Tuscany for a family vacation!

“A destination I loved when our kids were toddlers and that I recommend to all young families is the gorgeous   Italian region of Tuscany .  International visitors tend to know Tuscany for its cultural attractions and wineries but it is an incredibly family-friendly location and many Italian families vacation here, giving it a wonderful local feel.

The biggest attractions for families with toddlers here is the coast: it is beautiful, safe and well served, with a vast choice of hotels, campsites and resorts to suit all budgets. In terms of entertainment, the choice is endless too: you can relax making sand castles, go visit local farms for cute animal encounters, let the kids wander in car-free hilltop villages and even go to theme parks!”

Phuket, Thailand

After spending 10 days in Phuket with toddlers,  Brandi from Toddler Abroad  has a   trustworthy resource for Thailand .  Plus, we’ve been dreaming of taking our own kids there.

“Phuket has a number of excellent beaches and other toddler-friendly things to do. It’s incredibly cheap and Thai people love children. Our toddler’s favorite thing to do was ride tuk-tuks around the island.”

La Fortuna, Costa Rica

We loved northern Costa Rica, so I just had to add it to this list.  The La Fortuna/Arenal Volcano area is an exciting holiday destination with toddlers.  In we left Colorado and feet of snow behind to enjoy the beaches, hiking, and wildlife.

We hiked the Arenal Volcano and spent lunch watching the clouds and smoke dance along the top of the volcano.  In the evening we soaked in the hot springs with the locals.  The following days were spent enjoying the sloths, monkeys, toucans, iguanas, and Cayman at the Proyecto Asis animal rescue and Caño Negro Wildlife Reserve.

This 3-week multigenerational trip is how we developed our  step-by-step checklist and toolkit to planning an unforgettable family vacation.

Note: We stayed at a combination of private rentals and hotels.    If you are planning a trip to Costa Rica, we found the best deals at  Booking.com  to reserve as many places to stay as possible.  Our link will take you straight to  places to stay in La Fortuna.

Our favorite place to stay in La Fortuna and the Monte Verde area was a  Tree House.

Best holiday destination for families with toddlers - Costa Rica

Moab, Utah USA

After visiting the area ourselves with 4 kids, we agree with Kristie from  World is Wide , with her recommendation of Moab.

“Moab, Utah is a fantastic family destination for all ages. It’s our family’s favorite place on the planet, and it has been since our kids were toddlers. It’s got all the ingredients for an ideal toddler destination: two amazing national parks (Arches and Canyonlands), hiking trails galore, dinosaur tracks and remains, and lots and lots of sand. “

Note From Family Travel Fever:  Based on this amazing recommendation by World is Wide – we have taken a couple of trips to the Moab Area. We now have a whole series on Moab with kids including   18 Things to do in Moab ,  Arches National Park ,  Canyonlands National Park  and  Dead Horse Point .

Lake Bled, Slovenia

My Dad’s heritage is from Slovenia and I visited with my grandmother when I was younger, so I was excited to hear Chelsea from  Pack More Into Life  choose the beautiful Lake Bled.

“If you are looking for a great vacation spot to bring your toddler.  Look no further than Lake Bled, Slovenia. With its beautiful lake, castle crested cliff, cute playgrounds, and easy sidewalks to make pushing a stroller a breeze, it’s certainly got something for everyone!

Gold Coast, Australia

Holly from  Four Around the World  responded that  “The Gold Coast, Australia is a perfect family-friendly destination to visit with toddlers!

They have some of the most beautiful beaches for a family day out, as well as being the home to all of Australia’s  best theme parks ,  all of which have areas dedicated to younger children. There are also some fantastic playgrounds and parklands, and several places to visit for native animal encounters, such as Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary or Fleay’s Fauna Park.”

London, England

Cath of  Passports and Adventures  has written specifically on their blog about  things to do in London with a toddler .

“London might not seem like the sort of place to vacation with a toddler, but it has so much to offer. From visiting SeaLife and taking a ride on the London Eye, to exploring the Tower of London and more, it is a city that has it all for toddlers. Getting around London is easy with the Tube your best option, there are lots of family-friendly places to stay and the choice of cafes and restaurants on offer will please even the fussiest of eaters.”

Tel Aviv, Israel

The last and another unique pick comes from Melissa at  The   Family Voyage .  “We’ve taken toddlers to Tel Aviv twice and it’s become a family favorite!

There’s never a shortage of activities, whether you like relaxing at the beach, sampling food at the open-air markets, strolling along the boardwalk and the leafy boulevards or even visiting the weekly craft fair in the middle of the city.

Kids are welcome  everywhere  and it’s easy to find common Western ‘kids menu’ food at restaurants. There are playgrounds throughout the city and even on many beaches, so fun is always just around the corner! Get the inside scoop on visiting Tel Aviv with kids  right here . “

Tel Aviv is an choice you might not think of for family travel. The Family Voyage has been there with loves to travel to this International destination with toddlers.

Great idea for a post! Although I do not have a toddler, I do have a teenager with needs and we are going to Italy this spring. I will be sure to look into Tuscany!

Thank you! Tuscany for kids had not occurred to me! I had so much fun working with these wonderful travel experts and I loved watching the responses roll in. I was surprised by the locations they chose.

Thank you for sharing such wonderful destinations to travel with toddlers. But sadly, I have just visited Dubai with my toddlers and loved it very much. There are so many things for kids to learn and entertain. Two of the destinations that I added to my bucket list are Nice, France and La Paz, Bolivia. I will seek for travel guides from those travel bloggers who have actually visited these places with their toddlers.

You’re welcome. I found ideas to add to my family bucket list, also

I had heard Ireland before – so it’s on our list. Any chance you’ve visited?

Actually, we have and it was wonderful. We traveled with 3 kids, the youngest a toddler and grandma. We have wonderful family memories. We moved a little too much though. We moved almost every day but it wasn’t necessary. I think we should have picked one or two central places to stay and done day trips. The highlights for us were waterfall hikes, the castles and a hawk walk by a local bird rescue.

I love continuing to add to my growing list of places to visit with my kids. I have yet to make it to the United Arab Emirates and think this would be a really interesting place to explore a different culture and environment to the places we normally travel. Thanks.

Thanks!UAE sounds wonderful.

17 Toddler-Friendly Vacations That Are Just as Much Fun for Parents

By: Author Elizabeth Ciobanu

Posted on Published: 07/25/2023  - Last updated: 03/05/2024

As a parent of a toddler, you know your little  “threenager”  or  “terrible two, terrific terror”  thrives on routine and has their own way of pacing their day.

short trips for toddlers

Therefore, any vacation you plan with a toddler in tow needs to offer a measure of routine but with plenty of opportunities for unexpected adventures to keep things interesting as well.

Of course, it’s an added bonus if mom, dad, and the rest of the family are also having fun. To give you a few ideas to get you headed in the right direction, consider the following 17 toddler-friendly vacations that are just as much fun for parents:

1. National Parks: Olympic National Park

short trips for toddlers

Going to a national park is not likely your first thought when brainstorming toddler-friendly destinations. However, this type of vacation offers a good mixture of activities and options for parents as well as little ones.

This is an especially good trip if you consider yourself outdoorsy. Experts recommend visiting this area in the fall and summer.

What You Will Like

You will love visiting a national park because it is simply really cool. There are coastal tide pools and bike paths at locations like Port Angeles , Washington at  Olympic National Park  for example.

There are also stroller-friendly hiking trails, which allow the whole family to get out and enjoy the beauty of nature together.

There is even a neat mineral water-wading pool that is ideal for little ones and refreshing after being in the heat. The area also boasts picnic areas spread throughout, and there are plenty of lodging options both in and outside the park.

What They Will Like

This national park features some amazing creepy crawlies that will keep toddlers entertained while hiking. There are skittering salamanders, and bright yellow banana slugs, just to name a few.

In addition, the park features a visitor center with a Discovery Room that features a Ranger Station pint-sized playhouse, interactive touch tables, dress-up clothes, and puppets.

East Beach in the park also has a shallow swimming area and sandy shore, where your little one can dig to their heart’s delight along with playing in the already mentioned wading pool.

2. Ranch: Rocking Horse Ranch

short trips for toddlers

Most kids will one day dream of riding a pony or being a cowboy, and most grownups still secretly wish to see their own similar childhood dream fulfilled.

Therefore, visiting a ranch, such as the  Rocking Horse Ranch  in Highland, New York, is a great option that is both toddler-friendly and fun for the rest of the family as well.

This is an all-inclusive resort, meaning when you get here, you won’t have to worry about driving to and from any attractions, or hauling all your gear and luggage.

In addition, there is an in-room babysitting service available, as well as a nursery for kids under the age of 4.

Whether you want to take advantage of this is completely up to you, but it does at least offer you the option of having a quiet meal or experience with your spouse while on vacation with your young child. There are also custom meals available for anyone with food allergies as well.

What They Will Like

Ponies and wagons, need I say more? There are wagon rides and pony rides available for all kids over the age of two.

There is also an indoor water park, ski program, and tubing available, as well as an interactive playground designed with toddlers and babies in mind.

3. Pigeon Forge

short trips for toddlers

While the excitement and entertainment options of a large city are noteworthy, toting a toddler through a huge, bustling city like New York, for example, can be a bit overwhelming. Therefore, when toddlers are in tow, why not opt for visiting a small city with big charm?

There are many options to choose from, and you can always choose one that isn’t that far from your home to cut down on travel time. Visiting a more laid-back area, yet one that still offers activities, can be a great way to introduce a tiny traveler to the love of adventuring.

I recommend  Pigeon Forge , Tennessee, and nearby  Gatlinburg  as examples of this type of destination.

There is plenty to do right in town, lots of lodging options, restaurants, and more. You can choose from a wide variety of activities and even visit some museums and aquariums all without leaving town.

However, right outside of town, there is easy access to hiking trails and streams as well.

There are countless reasons for a toddler to love Pigeon Forge. Dollywood is located there, for one, which also has its own separate water park.

This is a family-friendly amusement park with an entire children’s section with rides designed especially for them.

There are also fun family-friendly shows like magicians and bubble shows, as well as plays. It is a very entertaining place to spend a day, and that is just one of many options in the area.

4. Resort Near Attractions

Coronado Bay Resort

You can choose from many zoos all over the nation for a fun family adventure. However, why not combine a visit to the zoo with a grand resort adventure for the best of both worlds?

You can visit  Loews Coronado Bay Resort  in San Diego, California for a wonderful experience that allows you to visit a zoo and other nearby attractions.

Since the beach is nearby too, this means you can combine the excitement of attractions with the relaxation of the beach. You can visit year-round, but will find the best rates in fall.

The resort was recently renovated and has a private feel. However, it is mere minutes from both SeaWorld and San Diego Zoo along with countless other attractions located downtown.

In addition, the resort will accommodate young kids when you tell them in advance. This includes childproofing before your visit as well as having special “baby is sleeping” signs to prevent nap interruptions, potties, swings, stools, and more.

You can even ask for baby food to be homemade just for your toddler!

While it’s easy to understand why any toddler would love visiting the animals at the zoo or SeaWorld, they will also have plenty of fun right at the resort itself.

There is a kiddie pool designed just for them to use, a playground and even singalongs and animal shows.

The resort also joins the Silver Strand State Beach, which means there will be plenty of opportunities for building sand castles.

5. Barrier Island Getaway

short trips for toddlers

If you like the idea of a beach vacation, but would rather have an even more chill experience, you can instead opt to visit the Barrier Islands.

One of the best locations to visit is  Captiva  and  Sanibel  Islands in Florida. A great place to stay when visiting this area that is toddler-friendly is  Captiva’s South Seas Island Resort .

If your family likes to chill at the beach and/or pool and doesn’t require a hopping nightlife and lots of overly structured activities, this is ideal for you!

It’s laid-back, quiet, and relaxing. In addition, if you opt to go to the resort mentioned, you are nearly right on the beach and can be  “at home”  in your fully stocked beach villa. This means it’s super easy to get back to your room for lunch breaks, naps, etc.

Also, this beautiful Gulf of Mexico beach features on-site restaurants, shops, and even a hot dog boat that pulls up at the south end of the beach during lunchtime.

If your tiny tot loves to collect shells to take back to grandma and grandpa or even collect them to decorate their newest sand creation, then they will absolutely love this beach destination.

In addition, there is also a family-friendly water park nearby, and you can even have your little one take swim lessons if they are 6 months of age or older.

There is also plenty of entertaining wildlife to observe, like pelicans dive bombing for fish, dolphins, which you can see on a cruise, or crabs running across the sand.

There are even manatees that frequently hang out at the dock, all of which are fascinating finds for young kids.

6. Hawaiian Disney Resort

short trips for toddlers

While I have listed several beaches back-to-back here, there is something different about a Hawaiian destination that deserves its own place on my list.

Visiting the  “Aloha”  state can be a great family-friendly gateway with plenty to do for all ages. This is especially true if you live on the West Coast and travel time isn’t bad.

If you plan on visiting, I recommend the  Aulani Resort and Spa  in Oahu, Hawaii, as a toddler-friendly, Disney-branded spot.

Well, for starters, it’s Hawaii! How could you not love it? More specifically, though, you will be surrounded by lagoons and lush mountains, serene grounds, and enjoy Disney Magic within the rooms.

Also, the Laniwai spa is there, where you can get a massage for the whole family. There are also poolside cabanas you can reserve for an extra fee, along with parent-child playdates with character meet and greets.

Aunty’s Beach House also provides childcare for potty-trained kids aged 3 and older.

They can meet their favorite Disney characters at breakfast as well as enjoy Toddler Splash and Play on the beach, where they can dig for treasure or build sandcastles.

They can also dance away with various Disney characters at the Shake Shaka Pool Party or enjoy the shallow refreshing waters of the Waikolohe Pool, which offers kid-friendly zero-entry.

7. Farm-Stay

short trips for toddlers

This idea is a bit different from the luxurious resorts and beautiful beaches mentioned previously.

However, if your tiny traveler loves animals, you live in the city, or perhaps have never experienced farm life, then visiting a farm and staying on-site can be a unique, interesting, and even educational vacation.

One of the best locations to visit is  Hull-O Farms Family Farm-Stay Vacations   in Durham, NY.

This allows you to introduce the wonders of a working farm to your toddler and let them see the field-to-fork connection.

It is also an opportunity to find out once and for all if your toddler really does wake up before the rooster crows!

You will absolutely love the cottages you can rent on-site, just a short walk from the barn, allowing you and your kids to enjoy all the farm has to offer.

They can help with simple chores on the farm and enjoy visiting with, petting, and caring for goats, pigs, turkeys, cows, horses, and more. They can even feed baby animals.

Your toddler will also get to help with gathering freshly laid eggs, pulling produce out of the ground, or watching a cow being milked.

If this is something they have never seen, it can be a very exciting and entertaining prospect, all with a low-key vibe that isn’t hurried or rushed.

8. Train Travel

short trips for toddlers

There is something magical about combining the wonder and awe of the toddler years with the thrill of railway travel.

Traveling via train can be a great experience that can get you to a destination. Instead of having your toddler strapped into a car seat for hours or on a plane, they can enjoy the thrill of travel via the railways and use this to get to your desired destination.

A good example of this type of trip would be  Amtrak’s Coast Starlight  Line. This travels from Seattle to Los Angeles.

No long airport lines, flight delays, or cancellations. You can sit and enjoy the views with your toddler instead of having to worry about navigating.

There are also no restrictions on bringing liquid for your toddler to drink while on a train. You will also love that any kid under the age of 2 can ride for free on your lap!

It takes the yucky part of a vacation away, the  “are we there yet”  experience.

Instead, you and your entire family can look out at the Pacific shorelines, lush forests, towering peaks and more as you travel from one location to the next and make traveling your favorite part of the experience, not the part you have to get through.

9. Family-Friendly Disney Cruises

short trips for toddlers

There are many types of cruises with various lines that you can enjoy, and that will offer you a great experience when traveling with a toddler.

However, there is simply no substitution for a Disney Cruise experience. Disney Wish  is the company’s newest ship and offers a mind-boggling amount of activities.

What You Will Like

The all-inclusive nature of cruising is ideal for a busy, stressed family. You pay ahead for your food, choose your activities and more, then you simply board the ship and prepare to enjoy!

There are also built-in babysitters onboard these lines that keep your kids entertained while you enjoy a drink or a lounge by the pool.

It’s all things Disney. If you can take the magic of a Disney experience and then put that on water, that’s what you get when going on a Disney Cruise. It is simply magical.

There are many activities for all ages of kids, along with a fantastically appointed ship that features hidden gems all over. You cannot go wrong with this experience.

10. Camping

short trips for toddlers

While you can camp virtually anywhere across the nation, it’s important when traveling with little ones to have some specific provisions in mind.

For this reason, I recommend visiting the  Santee State Park in South Carolina  and enjoying a family camping adventure.

Keep in mind, though, that if it’s easier for you to get to, you can always visit a camping site closer to home.

You can also opt to rent an RV, but be sure to watch the movie  RV  with the great, late Robin Williams beforehand to truly appreciate the trek you are about to take!

Also, make sure you check for any necessary precautions you need to take when in the great outdoors to keep your littles safe.

Don’t worry about hauling camping gear, setting up a tent, or bear-proofing your campsite. You can rent a cabin on sight, giving you the experience of camping without the sleeping on the ground element.

Of course, if you opt for another camping destination, many state parks offer semi-rustic cabin rentals.

Aside from sleeping in the wilderness in an adventurous setting, your toddler will also enjoy the flat hiking available for all age groups at this destination.

Take this time to teach them how to fish, how to roast smores, and how to tell a good story around the campfire.

This is an ideal getaway for a little one who loves to explore, see the banks of rivers and creeks, pick up sticks, and find interesting bugs.

11. The Mountains

short trips for toddlers

If snow-capped peaks and skiing sound more fun than the beach, pool, or camping, then you might instead head for the mountains and stay at a beautiful resort like  Smugglers’ Notch Resort   in Jeffersonville, Vermont.

If your family loves being outdoors, biking, winter sports, hiking, and more, this can be a great choice.

This amazing resort offers a ski program for kids aged 2 ½ to 3 years of age. There are also full-day ski programs for kids who are potty trained.

There are many family programs and babysitting options as well as pagers and security cards for parents to give you peace of mind when your kids aren’t with you if you opt to use this service.

This is a different kind of adventure. Kids can enjoy skiing on the Magic Carpet Life or snow tubing in the winter.

Or in the summer, they can enjoy a spray zone water slide or the 4,000 square-foot playground and FunZone, which is an indoor family entertainment center, that features nightly singalongs and story times.

Therefore, regardless of the time of year you go, this destination is a bit different than your typical family-friendly spot.

12. Traditional Theme Parks

short trips for toddlers

This one can get a bit tricky as the long lines, huge crowds, and loud noises that typically make up theme parks can easily overwhelm a toddler.

The important element to remember when planning this type of vacation is to choose a theme park that isn’t overly crowded and to remember to break your day up into sections so your little one doesn’t get too overstimulated.

While, of course,  Disney World  in Orlando, Florida is a beloved family destination and worthy of visiting, you might find yourself enjoying something smaller even better.

For example, Universal’s Islands of Adventures Seuss Landing  in Orlando, Florida is a good option.

Universal Studios offers plenty of rides for older kids, making it a fun adventure for families. If your kids love Harry Potter, you will especially love this destination.

However, with the little kid’s section designed in Dr. Seuss style, little ones will love the colorful displays and the themed rides.

If you stay at a resort, there are also pools and activities you can enjoy outside of the park in your resort.

While it is a big amusement park, the little kid zone will offer a respite from the crowds and allow your small adventurer to enjoy rides designed just for them.

The vivid colors and design of the fanciful area will also hold their attention and encourage exploration.

13. Sesame Place

short trips for toddlers

The Sesame Place  Theme Park in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, deserves a mention all on its own, because it is known as the most toddler-friendly amusement park in the nation and is one of the few theme parks that prioritizes young kids in their design.

It’s worth noting that Sesame Place is the first theme park that was designated as a Certified Autism Center. Therefore, there are quiet rooms along with low sensory areas spread throughout the park.

In addition to the many mild rides that your toddler will love, there is also an onsite water park featuring Bert and Ernies Splashy Shores that is included in the admission price.

There are cabanas and changing rooms as well, meaning you can enjoy getting wet without having to stay in your wet gear all day.

There is so much to do as all the rides are considered mild, with even the coasters being more family-friendly.

The tallest required height is 40 inches for Oscar’s Wacky Taxi coaster, and others have even less of a height requirement, meaning little ones can enjoy nearly every ride in the park which will keep them entertained.

14. Monterey Bay Aquarium

short trips for toddlers

Located just a few hours south of San Francisco is the Monterey Bay Aquarium  in Monterey, California.

There are 45 interactive exhibits, crawl-through tunnels, low exhibit windows designed with little ones in mind, as well as a Splash Zone section in this fun aquarium.

While you will likely just spend a day at the aquarium, you can combine this fun experience with a trip to  Gilroy Gardens , which is a nearby family-friendly theme park. This makes an ideal short vacation, which can be beneficial for toddlers.

You will love all the exhibits and design of the aquarium as it will keep your toddler fascinated. You will also appreciate the many sea creatures yourself.

Again, there are 45 interactive exhibits, textured walls, a touch pool with sea urchins, abalones, and other sea life, along with games, buttons, levers, and more for your toddler to push and pull to their heart’s delight.

There is also a dress-up area with seahorse costumes and more fun options relating to sea creatures, located right next to some real-life seahorses in a tank.

There is also a cornered-off padded play area called Coral Reef Kingdom that is designed for kids under 34 inches tall.

15. Desert Getaway

short trips for toddlers

Deserts offer a unique vacation for families, including little ones. The pools look especially breathtaking and welcome set against the brilliant blue sky, canyons, and cacti.

That’s to say nothing of the desert terrain and the many adventures that can be found. While you can visit many locations, one of the best destinations that presents the desert in a family-friendly atmosphere is the  Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale  at Troon North.

If the idea of exploring southwestern America appeals to you and your family enjoys pool time, nature treks, and more, you will love this destination.

This resort features a Kids for All Seasons center which offers supervised kids programs for those aged 5 and up.

However, for the little ones, the resort provides diapers, in-room fridges, strollers, wipes, lotions, washcloths, and more.

You can even ask for pureed baby food to be prepared by the house chefs. In addition, the resort’s concierge is happy to arrange babysitting if you so desire.

This resort features the cutest kids’ pool complete with pint-sized lounge chairs and robes. They serve fresh fruit, and make smores on Saturday.

There is also a nearby park in Phoenix called the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park that features antique train rides and a carousel.

16. The Beach

short trips for toddlers

While I have already mentioned a few beaches and even some resorts, a list of the most toddler-friendly family vacations would not be complete without listing a few beach destinations in particular.

After all, a beach vacation is one of the best options for toddlers. Where you go is up to you, but there are a few that cater to families a bit better than others.

For example,  Myrtle Beach , South Carolina  Grand Haven , Michigan,  Outer Banks , North Carolina  Gulfport , Mississippi, and  Virgina Beach , Virginia, in addition to the many  Florida beaches  available, are all ideal for family getaways.

» MORE: 11 Best Family Beach Vacations in the U.S .

Be sure to choose a beach destination that gives you easy access to the beach. You don’t want to be hauling gear for miles or across roads with little ones.

Also, if they have kid-friendly options like kid’s programs, activities, or the like, that’s even better. Be sure to find a hotel or resort that also has a small pool that is shallow enough for your toddler to enjoy, or a splash pad of some sort.

If you choose a location that also has other attractions like zoos, aquariums, boat rides, and more, that’s even better, as you can stagger your beach days to give your family a break from the sun and heat.

It’s the beach! If they love exploring, trying to find shells, looking for crabs, and making creations out of sand, they will love a beach destination.

Keep in mind, though, that you will still want to maintain some form of routine when vacationing with a toddler.

I know this is easier said than done, so any place you stay should have chairs or cabanas you can rent so your toddler can get out of the sun and nap.

17. Lion Country Safari

short trips for toddlers

Last but certainly not least on our list of 17 toddler-friendly vacations you will want to try, consider  Lion Country Safari  in Loxahatchee , Florida.

This destination is located around 20 miles west of West Palm Beach. It is a 600-acre safari and adventure park and allows kids aged 2 to 10 to interact with animals and have a great experience.

You get to drive through seven natural habitats and see lions, ostriches, giraffes, zebras, and more. There is also a water park and a giraffe feeding area along with a petting zoo for kids who are old enough to enjoy those activities.

For the little ones, there are splash pads, the Rio Grande Train, and a carousel as part of the adventure park.

Animals galore will be available for them to see right outside your window, all from the safety of their car.

In addition, they can enjoy a ride on the carousel or train or opt to cool off in the water park via the splash pad. It is a full day of fun adventure and a great add-on to a nearby destination.

14 Best Vacations for Kids Under 10 the Whole Family Will Love

A  family vacation is one of the best ways for everyone to bond while disconnecting from the everyday hustle and bustle. However, planning the best vacation when traveling with kids under 10 can be a challenge.

We’ve compiled a list of 14 of the top family-tested, kid-approved vacation destinations and ideas to help you plan your next trip with young children. You’ll have a great time. They will too as you make memories to last a lifetime.

1. Los Angeles, California

With more than 90 museums and 24 miles of beaches, Los Angeles is packed with family-friendly activities that make it one of the best vacations for kids under 10. In fact, there are so many things to do, you’ll need multiple trips to see them all!

If your kids like Harry Potter, they will love the Wizarding World of Harry Potter , part of the action-packed Universal Studios Hollywood . They’ll be amazed at the Griffith Observatory , where they can take a closer look at the stars using a high-powered telescope. At the La Brea Tar Pits and Museum , they’ll feel like they’re on the scene of Jurassic Park, with massive animal structures and tar pits. And of course a trip to Los Angeles with kids isn’t complete without a trip to Disneyland, just 30 miles south in Anaheim!

Want to soak up some sun and sand instead? Spend a relaxing day at one of LA’s many beaches. Venice Beach, Santa Monica Beach, Malibu and Manhattan Beach are all great options and are on our list of L.A.s cleanest beaches . There your little ones can easily pass the day swimming or building sandcastles. Or, head to the kid-friendly Marina del Ray where they have bike rentals as well as watersports and activities such as parasailing, whale watching and deep-sea fishing excursions.

3. San Francisco, California

There is plenty to see, do and explore for families with children in San Francisco. There you can pass the day away with the kids walking the hiking trails and observing California’s beautiful wildlife, waterfalls and natural scenery. Just two hours away from Frisco is the Dinosaur Valley State Park, perfect for a short day trip. There will also be many other families there, giving the kiddos an opportunity to make new friendships.

The best part about a dude ranch vacation (at least from a parent’s perspective)? They are all-inclusive, so you don’t have to worry about a thing other than showing up!

Kid-approved Dude Ranch vacations : Mountain Sky Guest Ranch (Montana ), Tanque Verde (Arizona) , Rocking Horse Ranch Resort (New York) .

10. Alaska Cruise

An Alaska cruise is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to see the state of Alaska, and a super fun vacation idea for kids under 10. In fact, it is a great vacation idea for first-time cruisers, as Alaska’s Inside Passage has fairly calm waters and smaller ships with all-inclusive options.

In addition to its incredible views of glaciers and Alaska’s beautiful rugged environment, Alaska’s kid-friendly cruises offer plenty to do between stops. Oceania Cruises offers a special youth program for kids 5 to 12 where they’ll learn all about Alaska. Royal Caribbean offers kids clubs with age appropriate activities for children ages 6 months and up as well as a kid-friendly pool with a beach and slide. Norwegian Cruise Lines offers even more fun for kids under 10 including a rock-climbing wall, water slides, laser tag and an award-winning Adventure Ocean youth program.. Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Lines are also two of the few cruise lines authorized to sail into the 3.3-million acre Glacier Bay National Park .

Many cruise lines also offer a land and sea package so you can visit Denali National Park , home to North America’s tallest peak as well as all kinds of wildlife such as grizzly bears, wolves, moose and sheep. Whale watching is also a popular cruise excursion for kids of all ages.

Kid-approved Alaskan Cruises:   Royal Caribbean , Oceania Cruises , Disney Wonder , Norwegian Cruise Line

11. Caribbean Cruise

If you want something a bit warmer, swap the Alaskan cruise for a Caribbean cruise! A warm Caribbean cruise is one of the best ways to do family travel and visit multiple tropical vacation destinations at once. With tons to do for kids and adults, it won’t just be one of their best vacations, but it’ll be one of yours as well!

Cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean have multiple activities to keep kids busy between stops including swimming pools, kids clubs, arcades and rock climbing walls. Some ships also have ziplines and waterslides. Disney cruise lines have often been regarded as the best for kids under 10 with kid-friendly dining, Disney-themed entertainment, kids clubs, pools, water play areas, water slides and even its own private island. Carnival Cruise lines is another SheBuysTravel favorite with a host of themed activities and family-friendly entertainment for kids under 10.

When you’re off the ship, you can participate in a variety of water activities such as snorkeling, swimming, building sandcastles and exploring the best parts of each new city.

Kid-approved Caribbean cruises:   Royal Caribbean Explorer of the Seas , Disney Dream , Carnival Fantasy , Regal Princess

12. Pennsylvania

No matter where you stay in Pennsylvania, there’s bound to be a fun family park nearby. Hersheypark  in Hershey is the largest in the state with family rides including more than 40 family rides and 20 kiddie rides. There’s also a waterpark and access to ZooAmerica, a year-round, 11-acre zoo. One of the most popular attractions at Hersheypark (and one of my personal favorites) is Hershey’s Chocolate World , a candy lover’s dream. There you can take a ride through a chocolate factory, design your own chocolate bar and learn all about the history of Hershey’s Chocolate!

In Easton, Pennsylvania, the four-level Crayola Experience will keep art loving little ones busy for hours with more than 20 interactive, hands-on activities. In Philadelphia, Sesame Place  has plenty of fun for all ages including rides, shows, parades and a waterpark. Sesame Street loving kids won’t want to miss the opportunity to dine and take photos with their favorite characters.

The Poconos Mountains is a year-round family favorite where you can ski, snowboard, hike, and visit some of the state’s best indoor waterparks. And at the Philadelphia Zoo  (the nation’s first zoo), there’s much more than animal exhibits. Kids can also participate in ropes courses, scavenger hunts, ride a carousel, or take a ride on an Express Train.

13. Washington, D.C.

As a native to the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, I’d have to say that a trip to the nation’s capital is one of the best vacations for kids under 10 and for the whole family. With countless free museums, historic monuments and sightseeing opportunities, you’ll never run out of things to do!

An all-time family favorite is the National Air and Space Museum  with numerous educational exhibits and artifacts that explore space history and travel. Twice a week there are free story times where participants can learn about rockets that have gone to the moon before designing their own. The International Spy Museum  is a fun and interactive place for adults and kids to visit and step into the shoes of a spy. Kids ages 12 and under will also enjoy the National Children’s Museum , with several interactive exhibits and activities that explore science, technology, art, engineering and math. The National Zoo  is also a must-visit. My son loved the Kid’s Farm during his preschool years, where he had the opportunity to get up close and personal with different animals.

Riding the Metrorail makes getting around DC easy and is fun for younger kids. My son and I would get a day pass and ride the Metro just to relax and coast through the city’s iconic landmarks and underground tunnels. The National Mall has plenty of space for kids to run around and burn some energy. It’s also a great place for having a picnic or flying a kite!

14. Wisconsin Dells

Wisconsin Dells is known as the “waterpark capital of the world” and is at the top of the list for the best vacations for kids under 10 who love being in the water. The best part is that it has several indoor and outdoor waterparks, so you can visit with your kids any time of the year.

Popular among children ages 2-14 is Noah’s Ark , the largest waterpark in America. There you’ll find more than 50 waterslides, wave pools, lazy rivers and a water coaster. Kalahari Resort  houses the largest indoor waterpark and an awesome outdoor water park as well, both with tube slides, body slides, water play areas, raft rides, and water coasters. Mt. Olympus Water and Theme Park resort is also an ultimate resort for all ages, with kiddie play areas, geysers, wave pools, lazy rivers, roller coasters and America’s first rotating waterslide!

For a super splashin’ vacation and hotel packed into one place, head to the Great Wolf Lodge Wisconsin Dells . Best for kids ages 7-13, this mega fun resort has an 80,000 square foot water park including 13 waterslides and nine pools! However, there is plenty for kids younger than 7 to enjoy as well, including a water fort treehouse, Build-a-Bear Workshop and water playground.

Without TV or a Wi-Fi signal in the comfortable, air-conditioned rooms and cabins, they’ll be fully immersed in the slew of included activities — from paddle boating to tennis to sandcastle-building. They might even learn to kayak or catch their first fish.

At night, music fills the resort. Broadway-style shows, held in a new outdoor theater, entertain all generations. There’s something about the fresh air and a choice of lollipops that keeps most kids from getting too wiggly, and the caliber of the performances is at least on par with good community theater.

The three included daily meals — with menu items like lobster rolls and Maine blueberry pie — will leave your crew’s bellies happy and full. And if you do need Wi-Fi occasionally, you can pop in the main lobby for a signal. Shh: The kids will be fine without it.

Some more must-dos: Visit the Griffith Observatory for the out-of-this-world exhibits and a stellar view of the Hollywood sign, and if you're an outdoorsy family you can hike down from the observatory to the Hollywood Walk of Fame and famous TCL Chinese Theaters .

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures , where anyone 17 and under gets in free, is conveniently located near the classic La Brea Tar Pits and the cool LACMA ( Los Angeles County Museum of Art). Plan to spend at least a half day at Liberty Station , a cultural attraction that has many places to eat and shop. New stores and restaurants are open at Seaport Village , which has a classic carousel for kids to ride.

The number one reason to book a vacation in this coastal town: the aquarium. Yes, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is that good. It levels up the typical touch tank experience by letting little kids crawl through tunnels surrounded by tropical fish displays and use squirt toys to learn how animals stand up to big waves. There’s even a padded zone with eye-level exhibits for toddlers! And the whole family will be wowed by the aquarium’s newish exhibition, "Into the Deep: Exploring Our Undiscovered Ocean." Some of the creatures in the 21 live exhibit areas are newly discovered and haven’t even been named yet. Mind blown! Stay at the hotel next door, InterContinental The Clement Monterey .

Disneyland Resort and California Adventure, Anaheim, CA

If you're looking for a Disney trip with young kids, Disneyland may have the edge over an Orlando vacay. Here are some reasons why: You can get on more rides without as much walking in California, so that means fewer tired and cranky kids. Summer weather is also usually better in Anaheim than in hot-and-humid Florida. And rides like Radiator Springs Racers, which looks like it’s right out of the movie Cars , are Cali-exclusive. The new Villas at Disneyland Hotel offer options that sleep up to 12 guests plus the decor is whimsical.

From relaxing escapes with your infant to deep cultural immersions upon college graduation, here are travel ideas for families with children at any stage.

Once a traveler, always a traveler. There are folks who believe a baby doesn't have to change a thing about a couple's lifestyle, and others who subscribe to the exact opposite theory. But all can agree on one thing: Those who loved traveling before expanding their family likely dream of continuing to explore the world, little ones in tow. One of the most exciting parts of having children, after all, is the way they enrich and amplify almost every experience. Then, of course, there's the awe-inspiring discovery that goes along with watching curious youngsters see and try new things, from delicious foods to beautiful cultures.

Knowing which places around the globe are most appropriate for kids as they grow into and out of different phases can be tough to anticipate. And yes, it's more daunting to fly or contend with jet lag at certain ages. It's true, too, that as little ones become big, trips become more expensive. But all the challenges are far outweighed by the collective joy that's possible on a family vacation, especially one tailored to the brood's developmental stage and interests.

Here, with the help of a few travel experts, we break it down by age group, pairing each with a dreamy destination for exposure to the wondrous world and maximum family fun.

Infants (Ages 0-1): A Mexican Beach Resort

You'll hear it from every parent: Travel while your baby is just that — a baby — because it'll never be easier. Once they start walking, all bets are off. True, you're likely sleep deprived, but doesn't that make it the perfect time to hop on a short flight to Mexico for some R&R and vitamin D?

When planning a first vacation with an infant, Indagare CEO and founder Melissa Biggs Bradley says, "You'll want a warm location with a direct flight, a big beach since infants are still too young to enjoy a kids club, and easy access to good medical care in case of an ear infection or anything more serious."

Expect to bring way too much gear, but don't worry — any parent will empathize. A family-friendly resort in a development like the Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita (for West Coasters) or Rosewood Mayakoba (for East Coasters) is a great bet since they'll happily provide the comforts of home (think: crib, mini fridge for milk, high chair, baby bathtub, or diaper pail), meaning you can focus your packing around sun protection and adorable tropical ensembles for your baby. They're also likely to offer babysitting services, in case you'd like to have dinner one night after 7 p.m. As for the new parent exhaustion, a soft, sandy beach is an idyllic place to catch up on Zs, for all of you. There's a reason sound machines come with a blue noise option — the gentle lapping of waves could lull anyone right to sleep.

Toddlers (Ages 1-4): The Island of Hawai'i

To a toddler, there's excitement to be found everywhere. They're like mini explorers, captivated by virtually every landscape and situation. Young kids who have just discovered the freedom of walking, running, and swimming will find pure magic in the Hawaiian islands. The coral reefs, beautiful beaches , Polynesian culture, soulful storytelling, near-perfect weather, and wildlife such as dolphins, whales, and sea turtles hold plenty of appeal for adults, yes, but also for toddlers.

The island of Hawai'i, specifically, offers a diversity of stunning environments, from stark and surreal lava flows to lush waterfalls, as well as resorts with little to no crowds. Mauna Lani , part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, with its ancient royal fishponds, outrigger canoes, and calm beach, exemplifies the family-forward approach. Their Holoholo Kids Crew offers thoughtful programming (think: crab hunting, Hawaiian language lessons, petroglyph walks, and natural dyeing, stamping, and feather art). And while it's designed for ages five to 12, three and four year olds can also attend with their parents (a great excuse for grown-ups to experience all the fun, too). Uncle Danny, the resort's cultural gatekeeper whose domain is the vibrant "house of knowledge," is wonderful with children.

"Many Hawaii resorts have protected ponds where you can take your toddlers into the ocean," says Biggs Bradley. "You can enjoy whale-watching cruises, and, in their later toddler years, they'll appreciate learning about the wildlife, maybe attend lei-making classes, or just relaxing by the pool or on the beach."

Elementary School (Ages 5-10): Rome, Italy

Once your kids have reached school age, they begin to hear a little more about the world around them. Basic elementary school lessons typically include ancient Rome, the Colosseum , and gladiators, says Biggs Bradley, so a trip to Rome "will further engage them in the touring, since what they've learned in school will be brought to life."

There are countless exciting activities available for kiddos, and even picky eaters will find something they love in the boot-shaped country known for pizza, pasta, and gelato. "Pizza- and gelato-making experiences are a must," says Access Italy CEO Simone Amorico, who adds that kids love making ceramics and mosaics, too. He says other can't-miss activities include, "treasure hunts in the Vatican and the Villa Borghese, where they can also ride a four-wheel bike and stop for picnics."

Meanwhile, the fairytale-like Hotel Eden is an ideal base for Roman excursions, and it's not far from Teatro Verde, a theater for puppet shows and musicals, the Explora Children's Museum, and Bartolucci, a traditional wooden toy shop where you can find Pinocchio. "At this age, a typical family tour can be boring, as they tune out and can't wait to leave," says Scott Dunn USA president John Spence. "We had our kids attend a Roman gladiator school so they could gain hands-on lessons in fighting techniques and reenact life as an ancient gladiator — they loved it."

Tweens (Ages 11-13): A Montana Dude Ranch

Between the ages of 11 and 13, kids, or tweens, will likely want some autonomy, but they also need boundaries. A dude ranch or guest ranch encompassing hundreds of acres of pristine, wide-open space makes for a wonderful compromise.

"When kids are in their early teenage years, there is nothing better than a vacation that combines adventure with something new," says Spence. "Watching our kids step outside of their element — horseback riding on mountainside cliffs or even just hiking in the beautiful Montana nature — is one of the best parts of being a parent."

Visiting a 10-square-mile property like The Ranch at Rock Creek — with a slew of included activities like fly fishing, cross-country mountain biking, photography classes, sapphire mining, and horse roping lessons — is quite a novelty for many families. Most kids, however unique their interests, will be able to find something they are stoked about. The younger ones can also attend Flint's Forest Rangers Kids Club (ages four to 12), which offers pre-booked excursions such as wildlife spotting and treasure hunting. Families can come together in the property's western-style bar for bowling, table tennis, and karaoke, too.

And perhaps the best part about Montana, home to dozens of guest ranches, is that it's gorgeous and fun year-round. It's a winter wonderland worthy of a snow globe and, at The Ranch at Rock Creek, cold-weather options include skiing (downhill and cross-country), sledding, ice skating, hockey, and snowmobiling. Expect smiles 24/7.

Teenagers (Ages 14-17): An African Safari

"It is all about the thrill of experiencing something so different from what they've ever seen before," says Extraordinary Journeys ' founder and CEO Elizabeth Gordon of taking the kids on an African safari.

Biggs Bradley adds, "Safaris are a huge area of passion for me, and I was eager to open my kids' eyes to them when they were young. The sweet spot to take children on their first safari is after 14 because by then you can ensure they will really remember the experience. They'll be able to sit in a vehicle for long periods of time and likely won't be nervous about sleeping in a tent." Plus, many camps also don't allow kids under 12 years old.

A safari is a special experience for a family to encounter together, witnessing an exciting array of animals in their natural habitat — not to mention beautiful traditions and cultures, too. "An amazing guide will teach [the kids] about tracking, get them to think like a detective, and figure out what may have happened in the area by looking at footprints," says Gordon.

As Biggs Bradley says of Kenya, "Cultural exchange is key. The opportunity for kids to meet and interact with Maasai people, for example, can be an incredibly memorable part." Properties like Sirikoi , Basecamp Explorer 's circuit, and Angama Mara provide beautiful immersion along with amazing sightings of the world's rarest species.

Another perk? Since Wi-Fi is often sparse or unavailable, families can unplug from technology and simply enjoy being together out in the bush. For even more adventure, consider adding on gorilla trekking in Rwanda (the pricier option) or Uganda (more affordable), especially if doing a safari in nearby Kenya.

College (Ages 18-21): Queenstown, New Zealand

Once kids have gone off to college, it can take a pretty enticing offer to pull them back into the fold for family vacations. Queenstown, New Zealand, is one such attractive proposition. Known as the "adventure capital of the world," it's the kind of all-season destination that offers a scene for everyone — plus, English is the main language spoken.

The birthplace of bungee jumping is home to countless thrills, from exhilarating jumps ( AJ Hackett Bungy from the Kawarau Bridge is the classic choice) to parasailing on bright blue Lake Wakatipu. "Families will love helicopter flights over the Tasman Glacier and along Milford Sound on a sunny winter day, or careening around the bends of the Shotover Canyon on a jet boat in the summer," says Gordon of this "quintessential playground."

For anyone who's not quite as much an adrenaline junkie, there are many hiking — known there as tramping — trails that reveal jaw-dropping panoramas. "New Zealand is a dream destination for a family who loves nature, landscapes, and, of course, adventure," says Biggs Bradley, adding that skydiving, rafting, caving, and fly fishing are also draws.

In the winter, Queenstown's mountains are home to epic skiing and snowboarding. The town itself is walkable and safe, with plenty of places to enjoy a sundowner, lovely meal, or the nightlife. With the kids becoming adults (and the local drinking age being 18), there's also the option to take a day for wine tasting at some of the island country's top vineyards in the Central Otago region about 45 minutes away by car.

To allow your young adults some freedom, try a couple rooms at the boutique QT Queenstown , which is full of art, quirk, and large windows showcasing the Remarkables mountain range and Lake Wakatipu.

College Graduates (Age 22 and Up): Japan

By the time they've graduated college, many young adults will be ready to dive, respectfully, into a culture as exquisite as Japan's. "Japan is a country you want to travel to when you know your family will truly be able to appreciate what it has to offer," says Biggs Bradley, pointing out the opportunity for deep cultural immersion in food and drink, museums, temples, and shrines.

In a place where there's a fine art to everything from making tea and arranging flowers to lighting incense, it's best to ensure all parties are prepared to be well-behaved and gracious guests. A more mature — or adventurous — palate is also helpful for fully enjoying all of Japan's culinary treasures. Spence calls it "the perfect place for post-graduates who want new experiences," and Japan certainly excels at providing those.

Tokyo is a dynamic urban center where exploration yields unimaginable exploits. A different energy pervades Kyoto's quieter neighborhoods of Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, bamboo forests, and famous geisha districts. ( InsideJapan offers wonderful private tours led by local experts.) "Our kids loved trains, making the bullet train around Japan one of the best parts of the trip," says Spence.

Getting around is indeed a no-brainer — trains and buses are always precisely on time, people are friendly and willing to help despite language barriers, and there are many appealing regions (prefectures) with special attributes, such as places known for sake, hot springs (onsen), and art.

Staying in a traditional ryokan is a must, and the fourth-generation Japanese-owned Hoshinoya portfolio includes several luxury options. One of the most memorable additions to the cities, however, is a couple of days near Mount Fuji, where Hoshinoya Fuji offers spectacular views of the elusive volcano alongside exceptional local cuisine and rugged outdoorsy activities, including a food smoking workshop, canoeing, and e-biking. At the end of the day, there's no better place for a globe-trotting family to relax and share stories than around a bonfire under the stars, with live acoustic music, s'mores, and Japanese whisky.

Come October, the “Kids Free San Diego” fervor takes over and most hotels throughout the city offer excellent deals.

If sunken cities are more to your little one’s liking, head to the Lost City of Atlantis at Mt. Olympus, replete with geysers, slides and, of course, monster dump buckets!

Some of the budget-friendly, family-friendly picks to consider for accommodation include the Hilton Garden Inn, the Alakai or Day’s End Motel; these are also much quieter than the popular resorts with water parks.

Vacationer’s Guide

Comparing destinations: which one is right for you.

When choosing the most fun places to go with your kids, consider your desired experience and interests.

Also, check and compare each destination’s drawbacks and limitations.

The Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront offers a convenient downtown location with stunning views and various kid-friendly activities.

However, one drawback of this hotel is its pricing, as it tends to be expensive.

The Park Hyatt Vienna is a luxurious hotel that impresses with its upscale rooms and multiple dining options.

But it has limited on-site kid-friendly activities.

Cedar Cove Resort & Cottages offers a relaxing and peaceful ambiance and provides various beach and water activities.

However, certain amenities and services have additional charges, which can be a downside to other guests.

If you’re seeking a more luxurious alternative to Cedar Cove Resort & Cottages with many amenities and activities, go to Four Seasons Chicago.

Its only drawback is that noise levels can be high during peak tourist season.

How I Picked The Destinations

I love traveling with my family, and we always choose the best places kids will love.

As we stayed in different destinations, I thoroughly studied each place’s services and other offerings.

I also interacted with other families and travelers, and we talked about their experiences.

Likewise, I asked them for some insights and tips about each property to make my reviews more credible.

Our Rating Method

I rate these vacations based on the following criteria:

  • Safety: I use this criterion to evaluate the overall safety of every vacation destination. Does it have a strong safety record? Does it provide child-friendly safety measures? These are the questions I ask myself when evaluating safety.
  • Kid-Friendly Activities: I use this criterion to evaluate the availability and quality of kid-friendly activities. Does the destination offer a variety of engaging activities? Is it near theme parks, zoos, museums, nature parks, and beaches? Is it both educational and fun? I consider these factors when rating this criterion.
  • Affordability: This assesses the affordability of the family vacation. Is it expensive? Are the accommodations, activities, meals, and transportation affordable? Are there family-friendly discounts? These are the questions I take into account to rate affordability.
  • Ease of Travel: I use this to rate the accessibility and ease of getting around the area. Is it easy to navigate? Does it offer family-friendly transportation options? Do we need to fly to get to the destination? I ask myself these questions in order to evaluate ease of travel.
  • Accommodation Options: This assesses the availability and quality of accommodations. Does it provide spaces that separate adult and child sleeping areas? Are there amenities like a kitchen, laundry, and swimming pool available? These are the questions I ask when evaluating accommodation options.
  • Food Diversity: This criterion evaluates the availability of kid-friendly food options. Does it cater to different dietary preferences? Are there child-friendly menus? I consider these factors when rating food diversity.

short trips for toddlers

Overall, these destinations offer the best vacations for kids under 10 years old.

We had a great time exploring Vienna, thanks to Park Hyatt Vienna’s convenient location.

It was a cultural delight, and my youngest was enchanted by the horse-drawn carriage rides.

At Cedar Cove Resort & Cottages, I enjoyed kayaking with the family and swimming in the crystal-clear waters.

We had a fun-filled day of snorkeling and building sandcastles.

This resort’s peaceful ambiance also allowed us to unwind and create lasting memories together.

We also had a relaxing time at Four Seasons Chicago, with its luxurious and spacious room.

But the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront was the best among these hotels and resorts.

From the swimming pool to the game room, my family was entertained throughout our stay.

The hotel staff was also incredibly friendly and accommodating, making sure that we felt welcomed and cared for.

Through every destination, we forged invaluable family memories and, yes, the occasional challenge of traveling with young kids.

The best toddler and baby-friendly short-haul holiday destinations

Travelling with even the most well-behaved of young children can be tough, but thankfully there’s a whole host of brilliant destinations just a few hours away from the UK by plane. Travel off-peak when prices are cheaper and the weather is cooler and you'll spend more time relaxing and less time appeasing hot and sweaty toddlers

By Mumsnet HQ | Last updated Dec 20, 2023

Toddler on beach

Nobody wants to spend the first three days of their holiday trying to convince their children that it really is time to go bed – which is why, with no time difference to the UK, Lanzarote is so popular with parents.

With over 90 beaches on the island, families can spend their days relaxing in the sun, building sandcastles out of the famous black sand or rockpooling in the shallows. Elsewhere on the island, the Rancho Texas Lanzarote Park is perfect for little cowboys, with Western-themed rides and and ‘Animal Magic’ zone with dolphins, snakes and giant tortoises.

Top tip: “Be sure to visit the fabulous marina in Playa Blanca called the Rubicon which is the perfect spot to sit, eat, drink and watch the world go by.”

Ibiza is more than just all day boat parties and boozy sunsets with many of the island’s resorts geared towards young children and families. On-site entertainers lead kids and baby clubs, activities and performances, allowing parents to relax and enjoy some sunshine. Most family-orientated hotels will also provide convenient baby-friendly facilities such as blackout blinds in the rooms to ensure little ones sleep through the night.

Even during low season, temperatures can reach a pleasant 21°C late into October. The island offers plenty to do with toddlers: explore the Con Marca caves, visit the Aguamar water or find some hidden gems at the weekly Es Cana market.

Top tip: “We hired a car to visit beaches around the Island, all of which were really child friendly, including Sa Trinxa on Las Salinas beach.”

If endless beaches are what you’re after, Menorca boasts more than both Majorca and Ibiza combined. These can get very busy during the height of summer, so take full advantage of travelling out of season by visiting the popular Es Grau where toddlers can paddle in warm, shallow waters, or enjoy the white sands and calm waters of the Cala Macarella cove in Alaior.

Quieter than the other Balearic Islands, Menorca is perfect for parents looking to relax and enjoy the island’s oddly specific 315 sunny days a year. Little ones can make good use of the kids' clubs and pools within the family-centric resorts, many of which are clustered around the historic harbour cities of Ciutadella and Mahon.

Top tip: “Some of the beaches may not be accessible via public transport so hire a car, even if it’s just for a day.”

Sardinia might not be as obvious a destination as the Balearic or Canary Islands, but with temperatures staying warm right into the winter months, this Italian island is a great option for travelling with young children during the shoulder season.

Alongside the clean, sandy beaches, Sardinia has loads of history, entertainment and great food to offer. Alghero, a medieval city situated in the North West of the island, is excellent for family resorts and would suit curious toddlers eager to explore the historic old town, while the resident pink flamingos of San Teodoro Lagoon to the east of the island will please future nature enthusiasts.

Top tip: “Look out for secluded beaches off the beaten track, but make sure to bring towels or chairs as there won’t be beach beds on these.”

Get up and go: These are the best family vacations to take with kids at every age

Tarah Chieffi

Where should we go on vacation is a great debate in family living rooms around the world.

Should we go visit grandparents or head to the beach? Maybe we should visit a theme park or take a cruise? Or perhaps we should trek to a far-flung exotic destination with lots of hiking?

There's an endless list of possibilities and factors to consider, with one of the important being the age of your children. Each developmental stage certainly presents its own challenges, but you can still have a fun-filled, memorable trip if you know how to handle those challenges and decide which family vacations are best suited for kids in each age group.

TPG surveyed real-world parents and staffers for their first-hand advice on navigating family travel to bring you the best family vacations with kids at every age and stage.

Best types of trips with an infant

Travel challenges.

Congrats — you have a new baby in the family! The good news is babies don't need much in the way of formal entertainment, though traveling with an infant isn't without its challenges.

While it isn't always picture-perfect at this stage, don't discount traveling with a baby. Once babies have a pretty solid sleep schedule, they can make for great travel companions.

If you are planning a long road trip, you'll need feeding supplies, diapers, wipes and multiple "just in case" changes of clothes for yourself and your baby. For a trip that involves flying, you'll need to find out the airline's policies for flying with an infant and bringing baby equipment like strollers and car seats.

No matter your method of travel, you'll want to choose a destination with baby-friendly amenities, a relaxed atmosphere and maybe even bonus perks like onsite babysitting so you can enjoy a parents' night out.

All-inclusive beach resort

A vacation where everything is taken care of ahead of time and you don't have to venture away from your resort is the epitome of convenience for new parents.

Many all-inclusive resorts , including Cancun's Finest Playa Mujeres , have dedicated water play areas for kids and complimentary baby care amenities like cribs, strollers and baby monitors.

If you want to get away for a walk on the beach or a romantic meal, infant child care with nannies accredited by the International Nanny Association is available at resorts like Beaches Negril .

When it comes to accommodations, a multibedroom suite or room with a separate area where your baby can sleep in a dark, quiet atmosphere will help keep that schedule you've worked so hard to create from getting too far off track. If you can't get an entire separate room, some family travel veterans have been known to make unconventional spaces like oversized closets and bathrooms work as makeshift nurseries .

Related: Best all-inclusive resorts you can book with points

Mountain cabin rental

Consider a peaceful cabin rental in the Great Smoky Mountains, Big Bear or the Rocky Mountains if you prefer a cool mountain breeze to the salty sea air. Most cabins offer full kitchens and many comforts of home -- and maybe even game rooms or hot tubs..

short trips for toddlers

With the help of a home rental service like Vrbo or Airbnb , you can easily filter out cabins that are too small or large until you find one that's just right for you and your family. You may even consider making it a multigenerational trip that includes the grandparents so they can bond with their new grandchild.

Road trip to visit the grandparents

Alternatively, for that first trip away from home, you could hop in the car and take a road trip to visit your child's grandparents in their hometown (especially if it's as picturesque as the above destinations). Depending on your family dynamics, it can be a great way to get some practice in on packing and sleeping away from home, but with some friendly faces and arms waiting on the other side.

Some parents may be ready for a visit like this right away, while others may feel more comfortable waiting until they've mastered the basics of baby care. One thing's for sure, though: You can't beat the built-in babysitting.

Advice from parents who've been there

If you've recently had a baby, going on vacation is probably the last thing on your mind, but once you've settled into a routine and are feeling up to it, a change of scenery may be just what the doctor ordered.

TPG's director of travel content and mother of two, Summer Hull, remembers that, for some, the 3-6 month range is a golden window when going almost anywhere is doable with a baby who has a good sleep schedule. "Just put them in a carrier, and away they go," Hull said.

Once they become mobile, everything changes, so take advantage of their lack of mobility while you can.

short trips for toddlers

Best trips to take with a toddler

As infants transition to toddlerhood, they become more aware of the world around them and require more entertainment and stimulation throughout the day.

That can be difficult while buckled up in a car or in an airplane seat for hours. A backpack full of board books, mess-free coloring kits and a trusty tablet can help alleviate the boredom. We're going to be honest, though: Of all the ages, the 18 months to 3 years range is the hardest for travel , as it requires the most active work from the parents.

You may also be in the midst of potty training and wondering how to manage such a monumental task while away from home.

Plan ahead by packing extra clothing, emergency pull-ups and possibly a portable potty chair if you are camping or traveling by car. If you know you have a big trip coming up, you may want to tackle potty training before your trip (still pack those emergency pull-ups just in case).

Despite these challenges, there is also plenty of joy that can come from traveling with kids at this age. After all, this is the time when they're full of wonder.

short trips for toddlers

Because toddlers are inquisitive and energetic, any destination where they can explore their little heart out should fit the bill.

Beach vacation

Whether you opt for a beachfront resort suite or a home-away-from-home rental, a spot at the beach is an easy place to set your toddler to safely dig, splash, collect shells and search for sea life.

Although it won't be the same as the relaxing beach vacation you enjoyed pre-baby, taking a trip where you can observe your toddler indulging their sense of curiosity is still pretty fun. Just be sure you do all that is necessary to ensure water safety.

You probably won't want to spend the entire day in the sun, so choose a destination with other family-friendly activities to fill your time. In addition to its award-winning beaches, St. Petersburg, Florida , offers proximity to Fort De Soto Park, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and the Sunken Gardens' tropical botanical gardens. Meanwhile, San Diego boasts its world-famous San Diego Zoo, museum-filled Balboa Park and the USS Midway Museum.

The 30-A section of Florida is also a fantastic, laid-back place to vacation on the beach with the whole family.

Legoland Resort is the only theme park specifically designed for families with kids age 2 to 12.

With locations in California, Florida and now New York, each Legoland park has attractions, shaded play areas, interactive exhibits and on-site hotels that cater to younger children, including toddlers. Staying on-site puts you steps away from the fun and comes with special perks like free breakfast, early theme park entry and character interactions. (But remember, perks vary by location.)

short trips for toddlers

Mitchell Stoutin, TPG's director of engineering, took a unique approach to travel with his toddler.

Before visiting Sitka, Alaska, with his then 2-year-old and 4-month-old, Mitchell prepared for a struggle to keep his kids seated without getting fussy. Since neither child liked being strapped into a car seat, Mitchell purchased a Thule Chariot multiuse stroller and bike trailer to use while traveling around the small island. "We arrived with the stroller and rented bikes from the bike shop downtown so we could tow the kids around," he said. "We spent the week exploring trails, sipping coffee, eating fresh seafood and hanging out by the water."

This could be a stellar option if you are traveling to a similar destination that's easy to get around.

Best trips to take with a preschooler

Preschoolers are generally easier to travel with than toddlers because they have longer attention spans. However, they also sometimes see themselves as tiny adults.

This means stronger opinions, self-determination and the subsequent tantrums that come with not getting their way. To manage unexpected outbursts, keep your schedule loose and flexible, include plenty of breaks and pack more snacks than you think you'll need.

Your child may also be getting to the age where you debate leaving the stroller at home rather than lugging it around on vacation. Consider the amount of walking you'll be doing each day and whether you'll be out and about during nap time or after bedtime when the stroller can be used to hold your sleeping child.

If you want to test out leaving the stroller behind, research stroller rental options at your destination ... just in case.

As kids get older, more mobile and more independent, a whole new world of vacation options opens up. Now's the time to try new things on an extra-special family vacation.

Disney park

A Disney vacation can be fun at any age, but preschoolers are at that magical age where they believe in, well, magic.

It also helps that they are old enough and tall enough for many of the attractions. When you hit something they are not ready to do, Disney offers a rider switch service so parents can experience attractions their kids are too short for without having to wait in line twice.

Whether you visit Walt Disney World in Florida or Disneyland in California, max out the magic by staying on-site, booking a character meal and packing their favorite Disney character costume to wear in the parks.

But remember, these kiddos are still pretty young, so you'll want to build in lots of downtime for swimming and resting at your hotel to avoid the aforementioned tantrums, even if your kid has otherwise outgrown regular naps.

short trips for toddlers

Ski vacation

For the most part, preschoolers are too young to be overly scared of trying something new. That makes now the perfect time to take them to the mountains for a ski vacation .

Look for a ski resort that offers ski school with small classes for this young age or even private lessons. In some cases, the length and cost of private lessons is reduced for children in that 3- to 5-year-old age range. For example, at Winter Park, Colorado, a half-day lesson for children age 6 and up starts at $699, while that same lesson for younger kids is $404.

Look for family-friendly lodging — preferably with a hot tub for soaking sore muscles — that offers on-site dining and easy access to groceries and other necessities. If there's ever a time to spring for a room at the best spot on the mountain, it's now. The Park Hyatt Beaver Creek Resort and Spa , which sits just steps from Beaver Creek's ski school, can be booked with points for an excellent rate.

Go on a cruise

Once a kid is 3 years old and potty trained, the world of complimentary kids clubs, including ones on several cruise ships, begins to open up.

Certain cruise lines are a better match for families than others thanks to their exceptional kids programming. Norwegian Cruise Line's free program for preschoolers includes activities like treasure hunts, arts and crafts projects and parades. Norwegian also has fun family amenities like bowling lanes, a miniature golf course and waterslides.

MSC Cruises offers similar child care and family activities, with its kids clubs divided into small age ranges, such as the Mini Club for kids age 3-6. This line also has a partnership with Lego, meaning your little ones will enjoy access to Lego play areas in the kids club and a dedicated Lego-themed day during each cruise.

Then, of course, there's Disney Cruise Line , which excels at keeping kids entertained. Onboard activities range from Disney cartoons showing in the movie theaters to character meet-and-greets to the Oceaneer Club, which is available to kids ages 3-12.

While traveling with his boys in preschool, Michael Gum learned that his kids especially loved hotel rooms with bunk beds and electronic drawing tablets for inflight entertainment.

Florida-based writer and mom Dani Meyering recommends parents invest in TSA PreCheck to breeze through security, as children 12 and younger can accompany parents with TSA PreCheck through the expedited security lane. Lots of credit cards you may already have in your wallet even offer a credit toward getting PreCheck.

On a recent trip, Meyering and her husband kept everything in order at the airport by designating one parent to manage the luggage and the other to be in charge of their son.

Both Gum and Meyering extolled the value of packing more snacks than you think you'll need. "It's survival mode on travel day," Meyering said. "Bring plenty of snacks."

Best trips to take with elementary-age kids

The biggest obstacle at this age is finding the right balance of fun and hands-on activities without overtiring them.

This is also the age where school absences and working around an academic calendar become realities for many families. While planning your vacation, be conscious of your child's limitations and don't book too many back-to-back activities. Even though these kids can make it through a busy day at home, leave time for some rest and recuperation in between marquee activities.

Best types of trips

At this age, kids are largely self-sufficient and able to handle a full day of adventures. By age 6 or 7, you can start mixing in more active outings like hiking, horseback riding and exploring new cities by foot.

Dude ranch or glamping resort

Dude ranches and glamping resorts let you experience all the fun of the great outdoors while staying in luxurious accommodations. Most offer a wide range of activities like fishing, boating, archery, cycling and swimming in an idyllic, natural atmosphere.

Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo in Polk County, Florida, (about an hour south of Orlando) has air-conditioned glamping tents and luxe covered wagons, among other accommodation options, plus a weekly rodeo. The Ranch at Rock Creek in Philipsburg, Montana, offers skiing and snowmobiling in the cooler months and mountain biking and hiking during the warmer months.

If you have some Hyatt points to spend, the Rawah Ranch in Colorado has a kids program for those ages 4-10.

short trips for toddlers

Bahamas resort

If you are ready to venture a bit farther from home for a beach vacation, the Bahamas is a worthy contender. Resorts like Baha Mar in Nassau have multiple hotels to choose from, some of which offer fun amenities like water parks and are bookable with World of Hyatt points , such as the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar.

short trips for toddlers

The Atlantis resort complex, which sits just a few miles away, is also an option that has thrilled kids for decades. Since some of the towers are affiliated with Marriott, you can reserve select accommodations with Marriott Bonvoy points.

International adventure

This is an opportune time for your child's first big trip out of the country.

They're old enough to handle a long-haul flight (and yes, even kids love lie-flat seats !), and they are better able to appreciate the defining characteristics of your chosen destination, whether that's snorkeling in Bora Bora or enjoying afternoon tea in London.

short trips for toddlers

Jessica Stephens, a mom of two, warns parents not to over plan. "Go in with an open mind and have a short list of things you must accomplish on your trip," Stephens said. "The other fun things you get to do are just bonuses!"

Best trips to take with tweens

When kids get into the double digits, they will probably want more space and privacy than they did when they were younger. If toddlers are the toughest age to travel with logistically, tweens may be the toughest age group to please.

If possible, you'll want to seek out accommodations with individual bedrooms or even a living room with a pullout sofa where your child can unwind at the end of a long day. Finding a space with an extra bathroom or two wouldn't hurt, either.

short trips for toddlers

These kids are also entering an age where fun with others their age can outrank fun with mom and dad or younger siblings. This makes the tween years a great time to double up and take a trip with another family or cousins or go somewhere that has a club specifically for the tween age.

Even in the world of theme parks, resorts and cruise lines, some are better suited for tweens than others.

Outdoor adventure

If you've been holding off on long-distance hikes or other iterations of "roughing it," now might be the time. A U.S. national park is a good place to start.

From mule treks in the Grand Canyon to beachfront camping in Florida's Dry Tortugas National Park to discovering dinosaur fossils at Dinosaur National Monument in Colorado and Utah , each U.S. national park offers something special for everyone, including tweens. Remember that the National Park Service also makes park passes available for free to those in the fourth grade.

short trips for toddlers

Speaking of (almost) free, kids in fourth through sixth grade qualify for a $59 Colorado ski pass that's valid at a variety of resorts .

Universal Orlando Resort

You can certainly bring younger kids to Universal Orlando Resort , but by the time they reach the tween years, they should often reach the height requirements for most attractions and won't be as scared off by the tall, looping coasters that far surpass the intensity of even Disney's most thrilling rides.

We recommend staying on-site in one of Universal's Premier Hotels since they are closest to the parks and provide everyone in your party with complimentary Universal Express Unlimited access to skip the standby lines during your visit. If you want to enjoy a real treat, go all out on a Universal VIP experience .

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line knows how to make guests of all ages feel special, but tweens can be a tough group to charm.

Luckily, Disney has this down to a science thanks, in part, to their club for guests aged 11-14. Tweens will feel like teens while making fun projects with provided art supplies, partaking in dance parties, singing karaoke, watching movies, playing video games and more.

short trips for toddlers

Mom Shana Loveday advises parents to let their tweens help plan the trip. She also recommends teaching them the invaluable skill of reading a paper road map. "Teach them how to read the map and let them have markers to track progress," Loveday said.

Best trips to take with teens

Like so many aspects of parenting a teen, the biggest travel challenge with this age group can be getting them excited and willing to participate. Balancing their potentially busy school and work calendars can be tough, too. Asking for their input on where you travel and what you do while there can go a long way. Allowing them to bring a friend may even earn you non-sarcastic "cool parent" status for at least a few days.

The sky's the limit at this point in terms of where you go and what you do. The training wheels are gone, and you can probably take the types of trips you used to go on before you had kids — just with a teenage twist to the plot.

New York City

There is so much to see and do in New York City. Not to mention, there are quite a few opportunities to sneak in U.S. history lessons while you're there.

We can help you choose a hotel and from there, it's up to you and your teen to decide which Broadway shows to see, museums to visit and landmarks to go to the top of for perfect panoramic views of the city for social media.

California road trip

California is well known for its theme parks and beaches, but it's also one of the best states for an epic road trip.

In addition to its general travel tips and visitor information, Visit California (the state's tourism board) offers a variety of road trip itineraries for every type of traveler. You can stick with the Highway One Classic road trip for unparalleled views of the California coast, or you can choose a trip that satisfies your family's specific interests, such as the Amazing Desert Oddities road trip or a Movie Locations Tour .

short trips for toddlers

European adventure

Nobody wants to deal with jet lag, but it is true that teens are probably better equipped to handle it than their younger counterparts.

If your teen is taking European language classes in school, you could choose a destination where they could get in some real-world practice. Or, you can bounce from country to country, which is surprisingly convenient and affordable by train or plane.

Writer, podcaster and parent Jana Seitzer loves letting her teens help plan their vacations. "We've found over the years that when they are invested, they enjoy the trip more," she said. "When everyone gets to provide input on activities and locations, everyone gets at least something they want."

Best trips to take with your college-aged 'kids'

If your college-age kids have flown the coop, planning a vacation where they have the freedom they are used to can be difficult. Keep them involved throughout the planning process and try to keep the reins loose during your trip, with pre-arranged meeting times throughout the day. As long as you land on something that sounds mutually enjoyable that works for their schedule, odds are they'll be thrilled to take a trip on their parents' dime — especially if a friend can come along.

Consider how your kid in college likes to spend their free time, and tailor your plans to their favorite activities. You could spend a day lounging on the beach or trying more active pursuits like zip-lining or parasailing.

All-inclusive resort

Because the cost includes (almost) everything, an all-inclusive resort gives everyone the freedom to do what they want, when they want, without worrying about money.

Excellence Resorts in Cancun, Mexico; Punta Cana, Dominican Republic; and Montego Bay, Jamaica; are ideal options for families with kids in college. The adults-only section of Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya is another terrific option, as it caters to guests 18 and older. There are plenty of points-friendly all-inclusive properties, too, such as the Hyatt Ziva Cancun .

short trips for toddlers

Multigenerational ski vacation

Whether you've been skiing together for years or you're all learning together for the first time, the college years are an excellent time to bring the grandparents (and maybe some cousins, aunts and uncles) along for a big multigenerational ski vacation .

Rent a spacious ski home close to the slopes so everyone has plenty of room to spread out when they're not shredding powder on the mountain as often as they choose during the day. You can even book a semi-private ski lesson for your whole group and tailor it to your current skill level.

Seitzer is an enthusiastic proponent of multigenerational trips, no matter your kids' ages. "Multigen travel is a fantastic way to spend quality family time with multiple family units making memories together," she said.

Traveling with kids of different ages

If you have multiple kids with significant age gaps in between, your biggest challenge will be finding a destination with a wide range of activities that will entice children from various age groups. Your best bet is a cruise or resort where the activities and entertainment are built right in.

Adventures by Disney

While you may feel sticker shock when you initially see the price tag, if you have a mix of ages in your family and the budget to support it, Adventures by Disney vacation packages can be a fantastic solution.

They offer guide-led trips on land and by cruise to destinations ranging from Wyoming to Antarctica . They take care of most of the details and work, and the price covers all meals and outings. Additionally, there are likely families there with kids of all ages so your group could blend right in.

Hawaiian resort

A sprawling resort with lots of activities and accommodations designed for large families will ensure everyone has an enjoyable vacation. The Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa is an amazing deal with Hyatt points. Plus, it offers daily activities like yoga, lei making and golf, as well as one of the best family pool complexes in the U.S.

short trips for toddlers

There's also a kids club (for a fee) if you find yourself in need of child care for the younger members of your travel party.

Travel writer Sarah Gilliland has 10-year-old twins and a 2-year-old son. Her advice is to save her older kids' favorite activities for their little brother's nap time.

"When he sleeps in the stroller or I head back to our hotel with him for a nap, it's go-time for them," Gilliland said. "It helps their time with us feel special, especially since they had our undivided attention for eight years." She also recommends having a grandparent, another family member or a babysitter travel with you so they can help care for the younger kid(s) while you spend time with the older ones.

Mom Christy Kelley shared a helpful tip for keeping the boredom away while en route to your destination. "A friend once suggested that I take paper lunch bags and fill each with one activity and one snack for each hour of the trip so the kids always have something to look forward to," she told TPG. "It's great for kids of any age."

short trips for toddlers

Bottom line

Naturally, these recommendations aren't set in stone. Some kids and families are ready to level up their travel early, while others like to keep things simple for a little longer. There's no right or wrong time for most types of trips, just general age ranges when some things tend to be easier than others.

If you want to head to Europe with your toddler, go for it. Or, if you want to head to Disney World with your grown kids, do it. Odds are high that great memories will be made no matter what you take on, as long as you're willing to go with the flow and keep your kids' wants and needs high on the priority list.

5 Places to Travel Abroad With Your Kids This Year

London, lapland, and tanzania are on the cards in 2024..

Is it worth traveling abroad with your kids, especially with so many great options in the United States? Short answer: yes. That’s especially true if you consider one of these family-friendly destinations our writers have visited in recent months. They’ve been roaming with their children in the United Kingdom, Japan, Tanzania, Greece, and Swedish Lapland and have unearthed some great spots for the whole fam for 2024. Just try not to think about the flight there (and especially the flight home) . . .

Osaka, Japan

Theme parks and enticing street food are among the highlights of a visit to Osaka.

Wandering through Osaka’s neon-clad neighborhood of Shinsekai with my son—a hard-to-impress tween with a thirst for photo-worthy culinary creations—we passed takoyaki stands advertising their octopus-based wares with 3D tentacle-covered displays and a conveyor belt sushi joint adorned with an enormous rotating nigiri platter. Ultimately, we were drawn into Jumbo Tsuribune Tsurikichi , a restaurant boasting expansive pools of fish that you can catch with provided bait and rods. Here, they’ll cook and serve whatever you reel in—which, in our case, was a beast large enough to feed a family twice our size.

Memory-making experiences like this are only the beginning here, where maximalist signage beckons hungry travelers at every turn. And despite rising food costs across the globe, affordable eats are still easy to find in Osaka, making it an enticing choice for anyone looking to test their taste buds without breaking the bank. Even the pickiest of eaters will find something to love in this dynamic destination, and fun-loving families will find a variety of singular eateries. Dine alongside Pikachu at the popular Pokemon Café or enjoy impossibly cute Mario-inspired meals at Super Nintendo World at Universal Japan , which will soon offer even more options in its new Donkey Kong–themed land , slated to open in 2024.

“I spy” gets a whole lot more interesting when there are leopards, hippos, and warthogs to peep.

Taking a toddler on safari is not for the faint of heart; I knew if I was gonna do it, I needed serious help. Enter Go2Africa , a seasoned tour operator staffed by specialists who’ve traveled extensively with small children throughout East and Southern Africa. These experts knew exactly which camps were the family-friendliest and how to safely travel between them. They arranged private safari drives for us in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area , a UNESCO-protected World Heritage site with Africa’s densest population of large animals, and a quiet corner of Serengeti National Park. Over multiple game drives in the two regions, we spotted lions, leopards, hippos, ostriches, flamingos, warthogs, and roughly a gazillion wildebeest, but it was a dazzle of zebras lingering within arm’s reach of our 4x4 that really had my son clapping up a storm.

Check out TAASA Lodge , a boutique bush camp in a 15,000-acre concession north of the Serengeti, and Gibb’s Farm , an 80-acre organic farm and coffee plantation less than an hour from Ngorongoro Crater. Both properties hire guides, trackers, and staff who truly love children, as opposed to merely tolerate them. Both also have swimming pools—a fantastic way for kiddos to spend some time in between game drives. —Ashlea Halpern, contributing editor

Athens, Greece

Ancient history comes alive in Athens.

While history and ancient ruins may seem boring for little ones at first, Athens is actually an entertaining and educational family destination. Before you even leave, get your kids into Greek mythology and history—there’s the graphic novel series Olympians that reinterprets the mythologies and a funny and engaging podcast by National Geographic called Greeking Out that my eight-year-old son loves. Once you land, kids will be eager to see the sites that otherwise might look like crumbling dirt. When I visited last summer with my husband and two young kids, I booked a private tour with Be a Greek specifically meant for families. Our guide kept both of my children (and my husband and I) engaged with a scavenger hunt, trivia, games, and dynamic storytelling as we traipsed around the city, ticking off sites like the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Panathenaic Stadium, and Syntagma Square to see the changing of the presidential guard.

Visiting the Acropolis is a bit more challenging, so be sure to go in early morning or evening when it’s cooler and less crowded, and leave the stroller behind (way too many steps!). Kids will also enjoy the Acropolis Museum (request a “family backpack” for educational resources, puzzles, and more); riding the bright red Athens Happy Train ; going up Mount Lycabettus via cable car; and strolling around the picturesque Plaka neighborhood. When you need to escape the heat, head outside the city center to the Athens Riviera for some time at Astir Beach or to the still-in-progress Ellinikon , which already features an incredible playground and park, with more to come.

To be in the center, stay at the new boutique Apollo Palm Hotel , which offers triple rooms perfect for a family of three (or four if one child is in a crib, which can be provided) while still boasting a chic design, gorgeous rooftop bar, and delicious breakfast buffet. For a resort experience, complete with a kids club, beach, and pool, the Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens has spacious rooms and an incredibly friendly and helpful staff who clearly love children.— Devorah Lev-Tov

Swedish Lapland

My kids were just toddlers when we visited Swedish Lapland’s Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, where I pushed them in strollers as they teetered across packed-snow floors in rooms carved out from river ice by artists from around the world. (We sanely slept in the warm accommodations on site.)

On a visit this past winter on my own, I found several other reasons to plot a trip back soon with my now-older crew. The best winter adventures in this part of Sweden come with experiential elements that go beyond chasing the northern lights. At Arctic Bath in the small hamlet of Harads, I watched a British family with elementary school–age kids brave cold plunges together following a sauna session, stepping down a metal ladder straight into the frozen Lule River and whooping it up before beelining it for the outdoor hot tubs.

Nearby, the whimsical variety of cabins on stilts at Treehotel —including one shaped like a bird’s nest and another like a UFO—were pure fantastical fun, with ice fishing and snowshoeing among the activities. Sapmi Nature Camp offers three-night packages to stay with Sámi hosts in private lavvu tents on the family’s grazing lands for reindeer while learning about their modern way of life. And if you’re here in early February, the excitement of the annual Jokkmokk Winter Market draws hundreds of Indigenous people from all over the Sápmi region of Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Russia for an outdoor festival with live music, shopping for silverwork and traditional clothing, and many more activities.

All of the aforementioned stays are a treat worth planning a trip around. But I’m dreaming of a multi-generational winter adventure at Fjellborg Arctic Lodge , where you can arrive via dogsled from nearby Jukkasjärvi. Families stay in a luxurious four-bedroom cabin with its own sauna and outdoor hot tub overlooking Lake Väkkärä. (Smaller cabins can accommodate more people right nearby.) The lodge’s wilderness guides lead all manner of excursions—including snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and ice fishing.— Terry Ward

London, U.K.

Buildings in London, UK

With musicals, green spaces, and seemingly endless restaurants, no two days in London are the same.

Courtesy of One Aldwych

From a wickedly funny Yeoman Warder guide at the Tower to a bike tour with London Bicycle and a visit to the Harry Potter studios (where all eight movies were filmed), my family’s weeklong trip across the pond proved to be equal parts educational and fun. We also adored the Matilda musical, based on Roald Dahl’s beloved book, in the West End, with all four of us singing along to its catchy tunes as we left the theater. The city’s many green spaces (Hyde Park; Kensington Gardens, with the Princess Diana Memorial Playground; Battersea Park) also allow ample opportunity for little legs to stretch, run, and stop to smell the roses. With a food scene that’s the stuff of legend, eating at Indian street food chain Dishoom and plant-based Mallow in Borough Market were also musts and didn’t disappoint.

London has many great hotels . I liked the elegant 101-room One Aldwych in the heart of Covent Garden, within blocks of theaters, restaurants, and museums, such as the fantastic London Transport Museum (where kids can see double-decker buses and grown-ups can marvel at the history of the Tube). Along with spacious suites, thoughtful touches like the daily replenished complimentary mini-bar (with biscuits and chips to keep little ones happy) and a “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” themed afternoon tea make the hotel truly perfect for families.— Tanvi Chheda

Family weekend getaways from Chicago

Wisconsin Dells, WI

1.  Wisconsin Dells, WI

Driving time from Chicago: Three hours The waterpark capital of the world—what's not to love? It doesn't matter if the weather is sunny or rainy, though, because this Wisconsin town offers both indoor and outdoor parks. Mt. Olympus is one of the biggest and most popular, with both water and theme park attractions (and rides for the really little ones as well). Those looking to do something a little different can visit MagiQuest in the Great Wolf Lodge to participate in a live-action role-playing game. If the litte ones come up for air long enough to eat, head to Buffalo Phil's , where kids get their food delivered on a train before spending some coinage in a giant arcade. Paul Bunyan's is a fun, themed spot for an all-you-can-eat breakfast.

If you're looking for animals, look no farther than Timbavati Wildlife Park for behind-the-scenes tours with exotic animals. Or let the kids feed gentle deer at Wisconsin Deer Park .

Hamilton County, IN

2.  Hamilton County, IN

Driving time from Chicago: Three hours Take a trip back in time at the Conner Prairie Interactive History Park  and explore 1836 Prairietown, see a Civil War reenactment or stroll along the nature walk. There’s also a large Swiss Family Robinson–esque tree house called Treetop Outpost for the whole family to enjoy. Then, of course, there's Conner Prairie’s tethered helium balloon, which elevates guests 377 feet above the prairie for unbeatable views over Indiana.

Nearby, you can take to the more than 300 miles of trails in the county, including paved paths that lead to shopping, dining and sightseeing. Bring your bike or rent one during your stay.

Lake Geneva, WI

3.  Lake Geneva, WI

Driving time from Chicago: One and a half hours At a sprawling resort like the Grand Geneva , you can count on plenty of activities to keep the family busy. Explore the Dan Patch Stables , where the kids can go on pony rides and feed the animals in the free petting zoo. Waterpark lovers will clamor for Moose Mountain Falls , a 50,000-square-foot waterpark. For dinner, check out Popeye's (not the chain with an amazing fried chicken sandwich): It's super family-friendly with great views of the water and a large menu.

Door County, WI

4.  Door County, WI

Driving time from Chicago: Four hours

A longtime favorite of Chicagoans seeking a bit of R&R, Door County has more to do than your family will be able to fit into just one weekend. Kids will make some amazing memories with the host of experiential activities, like feeding a baby goat at The Farm ,  making their own crafts at Hands On  or ziplining, gem mining or go-karting at Egg Harbor Fun Park . More active families will love exploring the stunning Cave Point County Park --you can even get kayak cave tours or stand-up paddleboards through Gravity Trails .

The region isn't short on kid-friendly restaurants either -- go for highly cutomizable wood-fired pizzas at Wild Tomato or watch goats graze on the roof at Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant and Butik . And don't forget to stop at Door County Creamery for some indulgent gelato.

5.  Indianapolis, IN

Driving time from Chicago: Three hours Indianapolis has enough indoor and outdoor activities for a fun-filled weekend. Head to  The Children's Museum of Indianapolis  for top-notch exhibits like the planetarium and the Dinosphere, where kids can dig for dinosaur bones. It also has a great play area for toddlers. For some fresh air, walk or bike along the Monon Trail, a 10.5-mile path that runs through most of Indy. Stop in the Broad Ripple neighborhood to browse some shops and grab a scoop of ice cream at Brics .

Rest your weary heads at the Crowne Plaza Downtown Indianapolis Union Station , and be sure to call ahead to check for family packages that may include lodging plus tickets to attractions like the Children's Museum and  Indianapolis Zoo .

Holland, MI

6.  Holland, MI

Driving time from Chicago: Two and a half hours Since the mid-19th century, the small city of Holland has been home to wooden shoes and tulips. Whether you're there in time for the Tulip Time Festival in May or want to visit the Windmill Island Gardens , the family will have a blast. Check out a working 250-year-old Dutch windmill—”De Zwaan,”—or stroll 36 acres of pristine lawns; bring your picnic blanket and a camera for a vibrant family photo op. During the day, catch a tour of the 125-foot windmill from a guide in traditional plaid Dutch garb. Need even more flowers? See more than 5 million in bloom in April and May at Veldheer Tulip Gardens . To take home a piece of Holland, though, you must not miss De Klomp Wooden Shoe and Delft Factory , where you can also enjoy a free tour of the famous, centuries-old pottery maker from the Netherlands. Once you've worked up an appetite, take the kids out for an authentic Dutch dessert like sugar bread from deBoer Bakkerij . If you need to burn off some energy, a 20-minute drive takes you to Saugatuck Dunes State Park . Surrounded by 300 acres of nature and dunes that rise up to more than 200 feet tall, you won’t have a care in the world running and playing along this long, sandy shore.

St. Louis, MO

7.  St. Louis, MO

Diving time from Chicago:  Five hours

Brimming with attractions, St. Louis is perfect for families. The iconic Gateway Arch is an absolute must—you’ll understand why when you reach the top of the 630-foot-tall monument—but don’t miss the interactive, immersive City Museum , an educational playground with slides, sculptures you can play on and even vintage pinball machines. If nature’s your thing, the Missouri Botanical Garden has one of the largest Japanese gardens in North America, the Saint Louis Zoo is free and home to more than 600 species of animals and the St. Louis Aquarium features a 250,000-gallon shark habitat.

Peoria, IL

8.  Peoria, IL

Driving time from Chicago: Two and a half hours

There’s plenty of family-friendly history, recreation and adventure in Illinois’s oldest European settlement. Enjoy the scenic views and watch the barges go by along the RiverFront District before making a stop at the The Peoria Riverfront Museum to immerse yourself in space shuttle launches, solar systems and eclipses in the domed planetarium. Then fill up on smoked meats and burgers at The Blue Duck Barbecue Tavern , housed in a repurposed train depot utilized from 1899 to 1978. Sleep close to the activities at the Mark Twain Hotel , a quaint and understated 111-room accommodation 10 minutes walking from the RiverFront.

You’ll also find lots of greenery and wildlife to experience, even within city limits. Spend time at the 60 square miles of parks—the oldest park district in Illinois. Wander around the 5-acre Luthy Botanical Garden for year-round floral beauty or hike through seven miles of trails in Forest Park .

Harbor Country, MI

9.  Harbor Country, MI

Driving time from Chicago: One hour and 15 minutes With a population of less than 2,000 permanent residents, the small lakefront city of New Buffalo is charming for all ages. During warm months, you can hop on one of the hotel's bikes for a quick ride around town. And kids will always get a kick out of the nearby Hesston Steam Museum and Captain Mike's Fun Park . For lunch, Redamak’s is the popular burger joint in the area, filled with fun activities for kids, including a mini firetruck. And what would a visit to a beach town be without ice cream? Don’t miss funky Oink's Dutch Treat Ice Cream & Yogurt Shop . For dinner, visit the hotel’s Terrace Room  for a comforting Italian dish like spaghetti and meatballs (described as Grandma’s family recipe with sweet marinara) that everyone will love. Or pop over to Bentwood Tavern for wood-fired pizza.

Battle Creek, MI

12.  Battle Creek, MI

There are no picturesque tree-lined streets or Michelin-starred restaurants in the manufacturing hub nicknamed “Cereal City,” but it’s full of wacky family adventures. The home of Kellogg’s and Post Consumer Brands honors its origins with an annual CerealFest each June. If you miss it, venerate America’s favorite breakfast any time of year with a visit to The Calhoun County Visitors Bureau’s  "Cereal History" exhibit to journey through the history, manufacturing, and culture significance of Battle Creek native John Harvey Kellogg’s invention.

As the sun sets over Goguac Lake, you can pretend you’re miles away from Southwestern Michigan at the ostentatious McMansion Paradise Island the Fantasy of the Nouveau Riche . Filled with regionally inappropriate nautical decor, this rental on the lake’s Clark Island sleeps 12, is only accessible by boat and features big windows that offer lake views.

Northern Indiana

13.  Northern Indiana

Driving time from Chicago: One hour and 40 minutes

With the charming university town South Bend as your home base, spend time exploring Northern Indiana’s outdoor expanses and Amish culture. Start with a visit to St. Patrick’s County Park , a 398-acre preserve with activities for any season. The park features year-round bird watching opportunities and hiking along the numerous trails of varying lengths, canoeing and kayaking along St. Joseph River in the summer and cross country skiing in the winter.

During summer visits, make time to browse outdoor markets running May through September. The South Bend Farmers Market and the Mishawaka Market  are both go-to spots for sampling local produce and artisanal cheeses and meats.

You can easily spend an entire day at Shipshewana Auction & Flea Market —the largest in the Midwest—located an hour drive east from South Bend. The size of more than 30 football fields, you’ll find antiques and vintage furniture, decor, apparel, food stalls, and even plants. On your way back to South Bend, make a stop in Middlebury, a town of around 3,500 with a strong Amish presence. Galena, IL

17.  Galena, IL

Driving time from Chicago: Three hours

Words people use regularly to describe Galena include “quaint,” “charming” and “historic,” but none of those have to also mean “boring.” One of the best all-ages options for more active families is the Chestnut Mountain Resort , a 100-room lodge featuring skiing and snowboarding in the winter and ziplining and a 2,050-foot alpine slide in the summer.

If you don’t want to go the resort route, there’s still plenty to do in the great outdoors with the whole family, from kayaking or canoeing down the Galena River with a rented vessel from Nuts Outdoors to a scenic trail ride with the Shenandoah Riding Center to strawberry picking at Terrapin Orchards . For a fun, family-friendly evening activity, catch some thrilling illusions at the P.T. Murphy Magic Theater or get your nostalgia on with a drive-in movie at the Midway Drive-In in nearby Sterling. And if you’re browsing through downtown Galena, don’t forget a stop for some sweets at Galena Kandy Kitchen .

Ann Arbor, MI

18.  Ann Arbor, MI

There are plenty of reasons to take a family road trip to Ann Arbor, even when it isn’t Michigan football or basketball season. Kids can spend hours at the interactive Ann Arbor  Hands-On Museum or the Leslie Science and Nature Center, where they can run around the Nature Playspace and get up close with birds of prey in the raptor enclosure, or snakes and frogs in the Critter House. The whole family will find something to love exploring the shops and restaurants on colorful Main Street—the little ones will be particularly drawn to the nostalgic soda and sweet shop Rocket Fizz and the countless shelves of books, comics, toys and games at Vault of Midnight .

As for going out to eat with your whole crew, even the breweries here cater to craft beer enthusiasts with kiddos— Blue Tractor BBQ & Brewery and Jolly Pumpkin offer award-winning brews and hearty, creative food for the parents, with solid kids menu options and crowd-pleasing desserts. What the data says about abortion in the U.S.

Pew Research Center has conducted many surveys about abortion over the years, providing a lens into Americans’ views on whether the procedure should be legal, among a host of other questions.

In a  Center survey  conducted nearly a year after the Supreme Court’s June 2022 decision that  ended the constitutional right to abortion , 62% of U.S. adults said the practice should be legal in all or most cases, while 36% said it should be illegal in all or most cases. Another survey conducted a few months before the decision showed that relatively few Americans take an absolutist view on the issue .

Find answers to common questions about abortion in America, based on data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Guttmacher Institute, which have tracked these patterns for several decades:

How many abortions are there in the U.S. each year?

How has the number of abortions in the u.s. changed over time, what is the abortion rate among women in the u.s. how has it changed over time, what are the most common types of abortion, how many abortion providers are there in the u.s., and how has that number changed, what percentage of abortions are for women who live in a different state from the abortion provider, what are the demographics of women who have had abortions, when during pregnancy do most abortions occur, how often are there medical complications from abortion.

This compilation of data on abortion in the United States draws mainly from two sources: the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Guttmacher Institute, both of which have regularly compiled national abortion data for approximately half a century, and which collect their data in different ways.

The CDC data that is highlighted in this post comes from the agency’s “abortion surveillance” reports, which have been published annually since 1974 (and which have included data from 1969). Its figures from 1973 through 1996 include data from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and New York City – 52 “reporting areas” in all. Since 1997, the CDC’s totals have lacked data from some states (most notably California) for the years that those states did not report data to the agency. The four reporting areas that did not submit data to the CDC in 2021 – California, Maryland, New Hampshire and New Jersey – accounted for approximately 25% of all legal induced abortions in the U.S. in 2020, according to Guttmacher’s data. Most states, though,  do  have data in the reports, and the figures for the vast majority of them came from each state’s central health agency, while for some states, the figures came from hospitals and other medical facilities.

Discussion of CDC abortion data involving women’s state of residence, marital status, race, ethnicity, age, abortion history and the number of previous live births excludes the low share of abortions where that information was not supplied. Read the methodology for the CDC’s latest abortion surveillance report , which includes data from 2021, for more details. Previous reports can be found at  stacks.cdc.gov  by entering “abortion surveillance” into the search box.

For the numbers of deaths caused by induced abortions in 1963 and 1965, this analysis looks at reports by the then-U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, a precursor to the Department of Health and Human Services. In computing those figures, we excluded abortions listed in the report under the categories “spontaneous or unspecified” or as “other.” (“Spontaneous abortion” is another way of referring to miscarriages.)

Guttmacher data in this post comes from national surveys of abortion providers that Guttmacher has conducted 19 times since 1973. Guttmacher compiles its figures after contacting every known provider of abortions – clinics, hospitals and physicians’ offices – in the country. It uses questionnaires and health department data, and it provides estimates for abortion providers that don’t respond to its inquiries. (In 2020, the last year for which it has released data on the number of abortions in the U.S., it used estimates for 12% of abortions.) For most of the 2000s, Guttmacher has conducted these national surveys every three years, each time getting abortion data for the prior two years. For each interim year, Guttmacher has calculated estimates based on trends from its own figures and from other data.

The latest full summary of Guttmacher data came in the institute’s report titled “Abortion Incidence and Service Availability in the United States, 2020.” It includes figures for 2020 and 2019 and estimates for 2018. The report includes a methods section.

In addition, this post uses data from StatPearls, an online health care resource, on complications from abortion.

An exact answer is hard to come by. The CDC and the Guttmacher Institute have each tried to measure this for around half a century, but they use different methods and publish different figures.

The last year for which the CDC reported a yearly national total for abortions is 2021. It found there were 625,978 abortions in the District of Columbia and the 46 states with available data that year, up from 597,355 in those states and D.C. in 2020. The corresponding figure for 2019 was 607,720.

The last year for which Guttmacher reported a yearly national total was 2020. It said there were 930,160 abortions that year in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, compared with 916,460 in 2019.

  • How the CDC gets its data: It compiles figures that are voluntarily reported by states’ central health agencies, including separate figures for New York City and the District of Columbia. Its latest totals do not include figures from California, Maryland, New Hampshire or New Jersey, which did not report data to the CDC. ( Read the methodology from the latest CDC report .)
  • How Guttmacher gets its data: It compiles its figures after contacting every known abortion provider – clinics, hospitals and physicians’ offices – in the country. It uses questionnaires and health department data, then provides estimates for abortion providers that don’t respond. Guttmacher’s figures are higher than the CDC’s in part because they include data (and in some instances, estimates) from all 50 states. ( Read the institute’s latest full report and methodology .)

While the Guttmacher Institute supports abortion rights, its empirical data on abortions in the U.S. has been widely cited by  groups  and  publications  across the political spectrum, including by a  number of those  that  disagree with its positions .

These estimates from Guttmacher and the CDC are results of multiyear efforts to collect data on abortion across the U.S. Last year, Guttmacher also began publishing less precise estimates every few months , based on a much smaller sample of providers.

The figures reported by these organizations include only legal induced abortions conducted by clinics, hospitals or physicians’ offices, or those that make use of abortion pills dispensed from certified facilities such as clinics or physicians’ offices. They do not account for the use of abortion pills that were obtained  outside of clinical settings .

A line chart showing the changing number of legal abortions in the U.S. since the 1970s.

The annual number of U.S. abortions rose for years after Roe v. Wade legalized the procedure in 1973, reaching its highest levels around the late 1980s and early 1990s, according to both the CDC and Guttmacher. Since then, abortions have generally decreased at what a CDC analysis called  “a slow yet steady pace.”

Guttmacher says the number of abortions occurring in the U.S. in 2020 was 40% lower than it was in 1991. According to the CDC, the number was 36% lower in 2021 than in 1991, looking just at the District of Columbia and the 46 states that reported both of those years.

(The corresponding line graph shows the long-term trend in the number of legal abortions reported by both organizations. To allow for consistent comparisons over time, the CDC figures in the chart have been adjusted to ensure that the same states are counted from one year to the next. Using that approach, the CDC figure for 2021 is 622,108 legal abortions.)

There have been occasional breaks in this long-term pattern of decline – during the middle of the first decade of the 2000s, and then again in the late 2010s. The CDC reported modest 1% and 2% increases in abortions in 2018 and 2019, and then, after a 2% decrease in 2020, a 5% increase in 2021. Guttmacher reported an 8% increase over the three-year period from 2017 to 2020.

As noted above, these figures do not include abortions that use pills obtained outside of clinical settings.

Guttmacher says that in 2020 there were 14.4 abortions in the U.S. per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44. Its data shows that the rate of abortions among women has generally been declining in the U.S. since 1981, when it reported there were 29.3 abortions per 1,000 women in that age range.

The CDC says that in 2021, there were 11.6 abortions in the U.S. per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44. (That figure excludes data from California, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Hampshire and New Jersey.) Like Guttmacher’s data, the CDC’s figures also suggest a general decline in the abortion rate over time. In 1980, when the CDC reported on all 50 states and D.C., it said there were 25 abortions per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44.

That said, both Guttmacher and the CDC say there were slight increases in the rate of abortions during the late 2010s and early 2020s. Guttmacher says the abortion rate per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44 rose from 13.5 in 2017 to 14.4 in 2020. The CDC says it rose from 11.2 per 1,000 in 2017 to 11.4 in 2019, before falling back to 11.1 in 2020 and then rising again to 11.6 in 2021. (The CDC’s figures for those years exclude data from California, D.C., Maryland, New Hampshire and New Jersey.)

The CDC broadly divides abortions into two categories: surgical abortions and medication abortions, which involve pills. Since the Food and Drug Administration first approved abortion pills in 2000, their use has increased over time as a share of abortions nationally, according to both the CDC and Guttmacher.

The majority of abortions in the U.S. now involve pills, according to both the CDC and Guttmacher. The CDC says 56% of U.S. abortions in 2021 involved pills, up from 53% in 2020 and 44% in 2019. Its figures for 2021 include the District of Columbia and 44 states that provided this data; its figures for 2020 include D.C. and 44 states (though not all of the same states as in 2021), and its figures for 2019 include D.C. and 45 states.

Guttmacher, which measures this every three years, says 53% of U.S. abortions involved pills in 2020, up from 39% in 2017.

Two pills commonly used together for medication abortions are mifepristone, which, taken first, blocks hormones that support a pregnancy, and misoprostol, which then causes the uterus to empty. According to the FDA, medication abortions are safe  until 10 weeks into pregnancy.

Surgical abortions conducted  during the first trimester  of pregnancy typically use a suction process, while the relatively few surgical abortions that occur  during the second trimester  of a pregnancy typically use a process called dilation and evacuation, according to the UCLA School of Medicine.

In 2020, there were 1,603 facilities in the U.S. that provided abortions,  according to Guttmacher . This included 807 clinics, 530 hospitals and 266 physicians’ offices.

A horizontal stacked bar chart showing the total number of abortion providers down since 1982.

While clinics make up half of the facilities that provide abortions, they are the sites where the vast majority (96%) of abortions are administered, either through procedures or the distribution of pills, according to Guttmacher’s 2020 data. (This includes 54% of abortions that are administered at specialized abortion clinics and 43% at nonspecialized clinics.) Hospitals made up 33% of the facilities that provided abortions in 2020 but accounted for only 3% of abortions that year, while just 1% of abortions were conducted by physicians’ offices.

Looking just at clinics – that is, the total number of specialized abortion clinics and nonspecialized clinics in the U.S. – Guttmacher found the total virtually unchanged between 2017 (808 clinics) and 2020 (807 clinics). However, there were regional differences. In the Midwest, the number of clinics that provide abortions increased by 11% during those years, and in the West by 6%. The number of clinics  decreased  during those years by 9% in the Northeast and 3% in the South.

The total number of abortion providers has declined dramatically since the 1980s. In 1982, according to Guttmacher, there were 2,908 facilities providing abortions in the U.S., including 789 clinics, 1,405 hospitals and 714 physicians’ offices.

The CDC does not track the number of abortion providers.

In the District of Columbia and the 46 states that provided abortion and residency information to the CDC in 2021, 10.9% of all abortions were performed on women known to live outside the state where the abortion occurred – slightly higher than the percentage in 2020 (9.7%). That year, D.C. and 46 states (though not the same ones as in 2021) reported abortion and residency data. (The total number of abortions used in these calculations included figures for women with both known and unknown residential status.)

The share of reported abortions performed on women outside their state of residence was much higher before the 1973 Roe decision that stopped states from banning abortion. In 1972, 41% of all abortions in D.C. and the 20 states that provided this information to the CDC that year were performed on women outside their state of residence. In 1973, the corresponding figure was 21% in the District of Columbia and the 41 states that provided this information, and in 1974 it was 11% in D.C. and the 43 states that provided data.

In the District of Columbia and the 46 states that reported age data to  the CDC in 2021, the majority of women who had abortions (57%) were in their 20s, while about three-in-ten (31%) were in their 30s. Teens ages 13 to 19 accounted for 8% of those who had abortions, while women ages 40 to 44 accounted for about 4%.

The vast majority of women who had abortions in 2021 were unmarried (87%), while married women accounted for 13%, according to  the CDC , which had data on this from 37 states.

A pie chart showing that, in 2021, majority of abortions were for women who had never had one before.

In the District of Columbia, New York City (but not the rest of New York) and the 31 states that reported racial and ethnic data on abortion to  the CDC , 42% of all women who had abortions in 2021 were non-Hispanic Black, while 30% were non-Hispanic White, 22% were Hispanic and 6% were of other races.

Looking at abortion rates among those ages 15 to 44, there were 28.6 abortions per 1,000 non-Hispanic Black women in 2021; 12.3 abortions per 1,000 Hispanic women; 6.4 abortions per 1,000 non-Hispanic White women; and 9.2 abortions per 1,000 women of other races, the  CDC reported  from those same 31 states, D.C. and New York City.

For 57% of U.S. women who had induced abortions in 2021, it was the first time they had ever had one,  according to the CDC.  For nearly a quarter (24%), it was their second abortion. For 11% of women who had an abortion that year, it was their third, and for 8% it was their fourth or more. These CDC figures include data from 41 states and New York City, but not the rest of New York.

A bar chart showing that most U.S. abortions in 2021 were for women who had previously given birth.

Nearly four-in-ten women who had abortions in 2021 (39%) had no previous live births at the time they had an abortion,  according to the CDC . Almost a quarter (24%) of women who had abortions in 2021 had one previous live birth, 20% had two previous live births, 10% had three, and 7% had four or more previous live births. These CDC figures include data from 41 states and New York City, but not the rest of New York.

The vast majority of abortions occur during the first trimester of a pregnancy. In 2021, 93% of abortions occurred during the first trimester – that is, at or before 13 weeks of gestation,  according to the CDC . An additional 6% occurred between 14 and 20 weeks of pregnancy, and about 1% were performed at 21 weeks or more of gestation. These CDC figures include data from 40 states and New York City, but not the rest of New York.

About 2% of all abortions in the U.S. involve some type of complication for the woman , according to an article in StatPearls, an online health care resource. “Most complications are considered minor such as pain, bleeding, infection and post-anesthesia complications,” according to the article.

The CDC calculates  case-fatality rates for women from induced abortions – that is, how many women die from abortion-related complications, for every 100,000 legal abortions that occur in the U.S .  The rate was lowest during the most recent period examined by the agency (2013 to 2020), when there were 0.45 deaths to women per 100,000 legal induced abortions. The case-fatality rate reported by the CDC was highest during the first period examined by the agency (1973 to 1977), when it was 2.09 deaths to women per 100,000 legal induced abortions. During the five-year periods in between, the figure ranged from 0.52 (from 1993 to 1997) to 0.78 (from 1978 to 1982).

The CDC calculates death rates by five-year and seven-year periods because of year-to-year fluctuation in the numbers and due to the relatively low number of women who die from legal induced abortions.

In 2020, the last year for which the CDC has information , six women in the U.S. died due to complications from induced abortions. Four women died in this way in 2019, two in 2018, and three in 2017. (These deaths all followed legal abortions.) Since 1990, the annual number of deaths among women due to legal induced abortion has ranged from two to 12.

The annual number of reported deaths from induced abortions (legal and illegal) tended to be higher in the 1980s, when it ranged from nine to 16, and from 1972 to 1979, when it ranged from 13 to 63. One driver of the decline was the drop in deaths from illegal abortions. There were 39 deaths from illegal abortions in 1972, the last full year before Roe v. Wade. The total fell to 19 in 1973 and to single digits or zero every year after that. (The number of deaths from legal abortions has also declined since then, though with some slight variation over time.)

The number of deaths from induced abortions was considerably higher in the 1960s than afterward. For instance, there were 119 deaths from induced abortions in  1963  and 99 in  1965 , according to reports by the then-U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, a precursor to the Department of Health and Human Services. The CDC is a division of Health and Human Services.

Support for legal abortion is widespread in many countries, especially in Europe

Nearly a year after roe’s demise, americans’ views of abortion access increasingly vary by where they live, by more than two-to-one, americans say medication abortion should be legal in their state, most latinos say democrats care about them and work hard for their vote, far fewer say so of gop, positive views of supreme court decline sharply following abortion ruling, most popular.

Middle East latest: Rockets fired towards US military base in Syria

At least five rockets have been launched from the Iraqi town of Zummar towards a US military base in northeastern Syria, security sources tell Reuters. The attack against American forces is the first since February, when Iranian-backed groups in Iraq stopped targeting US troops.

  • Analysis: Iran isn't biggest threat to the coalition right now

Israeli police say they have arrested two people after a car ran over pedestrians in Jerusalem this morning, leaving three with minor injuries.

Footage of the incident, which was caught on CCTV and aired by Israeli media, appears to show a car hitting three ultra-Orthodox Jews, with at least two of them flying over the dashboard.

Two of the victims are males aged 21 and 15.

Following the incident, officers say the suspects fled on foot, leaving behind a makeshift "Carlo" submachine gun.

Police said two "terrorists" came out of the car with the weapon and tried to open fire but were "unsuccessful".

Officers and border forces searched for the pair, who fled on foot and left the weapon behind on their way.

Palestinians have carried out periodic attacks on Israeli cities and towns since the country's war against Hamas began on 7 October, while violence has spiked in the West Bank in that time.

Iran's president has arrived in the Pakistani capital for a three-day visit.

Major highways in Islamabad have been blocked as part of security measures for Ebrahim Raisi's arrival, while the government declared a public holiday in Karachi.

The visit, which Pakistan's foreign office said will run until Wednesday, comes as the two Muslim neighbours seek to mend ties after unprecedented  tit-for-tat military strikes in January.

"The Iranian president is accompanied by his spouse and a high-level delegation," Pakistan's foreign ministry said, adding the group also includes the foreign minister and other senior officials.

Mr Raisi will meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other officials, besides visiting the eastern city of Lahore and southern port city of Karachi, it added.

Pakistan and Iran have a history of rocky relations, with Islamabad being historically closer to Saudi Arabia and the US.

The head of Israeli military intelligence has resigned over failures around the 7 October attack.

Aharon Haliva is the first senior figure to step down over Hamas's attack.

He had said in October he shouldered the blame for failing to prevent the attack, which broke through Israel's vaunted defences.

The Israeli military said in a statement the military chief of staff accepted Mr Haliva's resignation and thanked him for his service.

Earlier this morning, we reported that two people had been lightly injured in a suspected car ramming attack in Jerusalem.

Police have now given an update to say the number of those injured has risen to three.

Two of the victims, both suffering from minor injures, are males aged 21 and 15.

They are being treated at Shaare Zedek Medical Centre, according to The Times of Israel.

The force earlier called the ramming a terror attack.

Following the incident, the suspects fled on foot, leaving behind a makeshift "Carlo" submachine gun.

New European Union sanctions against Iran in response to the country's recent strike on Israel should include the Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Belgium's foreign minister has said.

Speaking to journalists ahead of a meeting with EU ministers, Hadja Lahbib said there would be a discussion over the legal basis for adding Iran's armed forces to a list of terrorist organisations.

"We will discuss it together," Ms Lahbib said.

"I also think we have to expand sanctions against violent settlers (in the Palestinian West Bank). We have to be balanced and make sure we won't be accused of having double standards."

The IRGC, through its Quds force, is a close partner of Israel's enemies: Hezbollah and Hamas.

Designating the IRGC as a terrorist organisation would make them the first state agency to be classified and put them in the same category as groups like ISIS, al Qaeda and Hamas.

Bakeries in northern Gaza have resumed production after 170 days, the World Food Programme has said.

The humanitarian organisation said after the delivery of fuel and wheat flour, four bakeries were now up and running.

Last week, the union of bakery owners in Gaza said there were 140 bakeries operating in the area before the conflict began - one of the main sources of food in the strip.

Six months into the war, nearly all the bakeries in northern Gaza had shut after being either bombed or destroyed.

A suspected car ramming attack in Jerusalem has left two people lightly injured, Israeli medics have said.

The Magen David Adom ambulance service said it was treating two people who were struck by the same car on two different streets in the Romema area.

Both are in good condition.

Police have said the ramming was a terror attack.

The suspects fled on foot following the incident, leaving behind a makeshift "Carlo" submachine gun.

Officers have been dispatched to the scene to search for the attackers.

Sir Mark Rowley will meet the home secretary and policing minister this week to discuss antisemitism, Sky News understands.

It comes after an antisemitism campaigner was threatened with arrest yards away from a pro-Palestine protest where officers described him as "openly Jewish" and said his presence was "antagonising demonstrators".

The force apologised but then had to apologise for their apology after suggesting opponents of pro-Palestinian marches "must know that their presence is provocative".

The Met Police chief will also meet London mayor Sadiq Khan to discuss "community relations" and he is expected to speak to organisations including the Board of Deputies of British Jews, the London Jewish Forum and the Community Safety Trust.

Gideon Falter, the campaigner who was threatened with arrest, said Jewish Londoners could not have confidence in the police under Sir Mark's leadership, accusing the commissioner of "victim blaming".

In video from the incident, an officer appeared to prevent Mr Falter from crossing the road at the London protest, telling him: "You are quite openly Jewish, this is a pro-Palestinian march. I'm not accusing you of anything but I am worried about the reaction to your presence."

Mr Falter, chief executive of the Campaign Against Antisemitism, was wearing a yarmulke and said he was simply walking past after attending synagogue.

He said he was threatened with arrest if he did not leave the area.

You can read more on this story below.

We're getting more now on the attempted attack on a US military base in northeastern Syria.

As we reported earlier, sources have told the Reuters news agency that at least five rockets were launched from the Iraqi town of Zummar towards the base.

A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, referred to it as a "failed rocket attack".

It was not immediately clear if the rockets had failed to hit the base or been destroyed before they reached, or if the base was the target.

Two security sources and a senior army officer in Iraq said a small truck with a rocket launcher fixed on the back had been parked in Zummar, which is on the border with Syria.

The destroyed truck was seized for investigation and initial findings were that it was destroyed by an airstrike.

"We are communicating with the coalition forces in Iraq to share information on this attack," the officer added.

The Iraqi Security Media Cell, an official body responsible for disseminating security information, said Iraqi forces had launched "a wide-ranging search and inspection operation" targeting the attackers near the Syrian border, pledging to bring them to justice.

The last week was spent anticipating an Israeli response to Iran's unprecedented missile and drone attack on Israel on 13 April.

And then it came on Friday when an airbase near the Iranian city of Isfahan - known for its role in Iran's nuclear research - was hit.

Israel hasn't commented on the strike but the US informed a G7 meeting that Israel had told it about the attack "at the last minute".

The strike appears to have been limited and symbolic in nature to send a warning rather than ignite a bigger confrontation, according to our  international correspondent Alex Rossi ...

Israeli drones used in attack 'more like toys' - Iran

Iran dismissed the danger of the drones used by Israel.

The country's foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian claimed they took off from within Iran and only flew a few hundred metres before being shot down.

"It has not been proved to us that there is a connection between these and Israel," Mr Amir-Abdollahian told Sky's US partner NBC News.

The foreign minister said they were "more like toys that our children play with" than a serious threat, as he sought to play down the Israeli action.

Iran also referred to it as an "infiltration" rather than a serious "external attack" .

However, our military analyst Professor Michael Clarke said it appeared likely ballistic missiles were used in the attack - and that both sides were trying to "save face".

Incursion into Rafah 'not far away' after deadly strikes

While the latest flare-up in the wider Middle East appears to have died down for now, Israel is still locked in conflict closer to home, Alex Rossi says .

The indication is that Israel's long-anticipated incursion into the southern city of Rafah may not be far away and US officials met their Israeli counterparts last week to discuss the imminent incursion.

The White House has consistently warned the Israelis against a wholesale ground offensive on the city.

Yesterday, we reported here how children had been killed in airstrikes on the area, according to Palestinian health officials.

At least 22 people were killed, including 18 children, health officials said.

Israel has carried out near-daily air raids on Rafah, where more than half of Gaza's population of 2.3 million people have sought refuge from fighting elsewhere.

An airstrike in Rafah the night before killed nine people, including six children.

Israeli raid in West Bank at weekend

Israeli forces killed 14 Palestinians during an extended raid in the West Bank over the weekend, according to Palestinian authorities, marking one of the heaviest casualty totals in the region for months.

The raid on the Nur Shams area, near the flashpoint city of Tulkarm, began early on Friday and continued on Saturday.

Deadly settler attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank increased sharply over the last week, following the killing of 14-year-old Israeli shepherd Binyamin Ahimeir.

After the boy's body was found, Israeli authorities warned against revenge attacks.

But despite this, Israeli human rights group Yesh Din said attacks of an "unprecedented scale" followed, targeting Palestinians in the West Bank.

Among those killed were 30-year-old Abdul Rahman Bani Fadel and 21-year-old Mohammad Bani Jamea, who were shot dead during an attack by dozens of settlers near the town of Aqraba.

The IDF also said its forces had killed a 17-year-old during a raid in Nablus.

US Congress approves aid package for Israel

The US House of Representatives approved a $26bn package aiding Israel and providing humanitarian relief to people in Gaza.

The package will now go to the US Senate, where it is likely to be passed on Tuesday.

US politicians also approved vital extra funds for Ukraine.

Hezbollah commander killed

Away from the situation with Iran, Israel is still facing problems on its northern border with Lebanon.

But it claimed a victory last Tuesday with the killing of the commander of Hezbollah's coastal sector, Ismail Yusaf Baz.

The IDF said it had "eliminated" the commander in a strike in the Ain Ebel area.

Situation in Gaza remains perilous

The situation in Gaza remains perilous, with hundreds of thousands of people still displaced, Israeli airstrikes continuing to kill Palestinians, and Israel facing accusations it is still not doing enough to get aid through.

The UN human rights office said Israel is still imposing "unlawful" restrictions on humanitarian aid for Gaza and that it remains far below bare minimum levels.

The Israel-Hamas war has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry.
