Since turning a love for the community and wildlife of Churchill, Manitoba, for photography, adventure, and the challenge of improving each new Polar Rover, into a thriving family-run business. We're excited to commemorate such an important year and share the journey we've taken since the days of 'Old Blue' (the first Polar Rover)!

When you ask the people who have been deeply connected to the growth of Great White Bear Tours over the past 30 years, you will hear many of the same words of endearment and strength about its owners Marilyn and Don Walkoski, and about the business. Yet, the same can be said about each and every individual who –throughout the years – have been there to support and guide the endeavours of Great White Bear Tours. It goes without saying that due to their dedication, Great White Bear Tours would not be where it is today.

Churchill Polar Bear Tour - Canada Polar Bear Safari - Walking with Polar Bears

More Details

Your Churchill Polar Bear Tour first kicks off in Winnipeg. While here, enjoy a leisurely overnight at the airport hotel. Also visit to the Manitoba Museum for a tour of the Arctic Gallery.

Next, depart by regional flight to Churchill, Manitoba -- the Polar Bear Capital of the World. During your two days in this historic port town, you will set out on multiple marine excursions focusing on beluga whale sightings. Excursions include a combination of kayaking with beluga whales in the Churchill River, estuary tours, and touring the Prince of Wales Fort while beluga watching from the boat.

Times for each Churchill marine adventure will vary with the tides. This will maximize your time with the beluga whales. Indeed, some 54,000 beluga whales spend their summer in western Hudson Bay. And up to 3,000 head to the Churchill River estuary.

Finally, it is time to begin your Canada Polar Bear Safari on the shores of Hudson Bay. You will stay at the most remote property for polar bear viewing, Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge. In fact, the diverse ecosystem surrounding the lodge is home to Canadian icons such as polar bears, black bears, arctic foxes, wolves, and moose.

Spend your days here embarking on daily outings with the Churchill Wild naturalist guides. You will mainly embark on coastal explorations to the tidal flats and Hudson Bay shoreline. Set out on bear walks or ride in specialized tundra vehicles to witness the Polar Bears in Churchill in their natural habitat.

Also explore the river deltas and vast beach ridges. Or, stay close to the lodge to take advantage of additional wildlife spotting opportunities. Routes will vary but you will have ample time to go walking with polar bears at a safe distance. You will also have a chance to photograph them and the other wildlife that live in this unique environment.

After each day, wind down during appetizer hour in the lounge. Then indulge in one of the lodge’s signature dinners followed by a presentation or free time. Lodge staff will also monitor Aurora Borealis after dark and will provide a wake-up call to ensure you don’t miss the Northern Lights.

You will eventually return back to Churchill, where you will spend the day with a guide learning about the town's rich history. Stop at such sites as the Parks Canada exhibit, the Itsanitaq Museum, and the Polar Bear Jail, among others.

Enjoy some free time for souvenir shopping before your evening flight to Winnipeg and your final overnight in Manitoba.

How to Experience Canada's Famous Polar Bear Party

The town of Churchill provides a perfect base camp for spotting the Arctic bears.

Every fall, hundreds of polar bears congregate along Canada ’s Hudson Bay, near the town of Churchill , Manitoba , waiting for the water to freeze so they can get out on the ice and hunt seals.

Polar bears’ scientific name, Ursus maritimus , means sea bear, and they rely on sea ice for survival—using it to hunt, travel, and breed. Loss of sea ice due to climate change is threatening the species, and according to Polar Bears International , up to two-thirds of the bears could die by 2050, with none left in the wild by 2100.

Eager to get on the ice and find food as soon as possible, the bears wait near the bay in anticipation of the freeze. This gathering spot provides a great opportunity for wildlife watchers to take a peek at these majestic, fearsome, and enormous creatures.

Polar bears walk across the snow near Churchill, where many of the animals gather each year waiting for the ice to freeze.

Churchill: The Polar Bear Destination

Since the bears rely so heavily on sea ice, they spend most of their time in very sparsely inhabited regions, but fall provides a rare opportunity to see many polar bears in a relatively small area. The town of Churchill, in Manitoba, Canada, has around 900 residents and functions as a good adventure base camp with hotels, restaurants, and tours.

No roads reach Churchill, and train service was suspended indefinitely after flood damage to the tracks in early 2017, so flying is now the only feasible way to reach the town. Commercial and charter airlines serve the tiny airport, which features a huge polar bear safety sign warning visitors of the rules, including the obvious—never feed or approach the animals—and the less obvious: never walk at night after 10:00 p.m.

The airport sign also shares the ubiquitous Polar Bear Alert hotline, which is posted on signs and in hotel rooms throughout town. A 24-hour patrol team responds to calls reporting polar bears in or near town. Uncooperative bears may serve a stint in the Polar Bear Holding Facility , known colloquially as “polar bear jail,” before being released back into the wild.

Experience the Tundra

The best way to safely see polar bears up close is to sign up for a tour of the Churchill Wildlife Management Area . Specially equipped tundra vehicles, also known as tundra buggies or polar rovers, bring visitors out to see the animals, traveling along specific routes within the over 3,200-square-mile area alongside Hudson Bay.

  • Nat Geo Expeditions

These custom-built machines have huge tires that only exert four pounds of pressure per square inch to minimize damage to the fragile habitat. Elevated decks on the back of the vehicles sometimes feature grates that reveal intimate views of the occasional extra-curious bear wandering underneath sniffing at shoes. Arctic foxes, red foxes, snowy owls, and other critters can also be seen in the area. Mobile seasonal lodges let visitors spend the night out in prime polar bear territory, and helicopter tours along the bay are a way to gain an aerial perspective.

In Their Element

Witnessing polar bears in their natural habitat means watching the interactions between female bears, called sows, and their cubs-of-the-year (also called coy) as well as older cubs, referred to as yearlings. In the fall, male bears sometimes spend their time sparring with one another—rearing up on their hind legs, swatting at each other, and tumbling in the snow. Bears also spend their time digging through kelp on the shores, looking for bites to eat.

But, as much fun as they are to watch on the shore, as soon as the ice freezes, the polar bears disappear in search of seals to consume. These voracious eaters can ingest 100 pounds of seal blubber at one time, so they have plenty of hunting to do.

Natural Environment of Churchill's Arctic Wildlife

Polar bear walks along the snowy shore of the Hudson Bay

Churchill's Arctic wildlife thrives within a diverse ecosystem. The region is defined by its proximity to Hudson Bay, the expansive tundra, and the sprawling boreal forest.

Unique Features:

1. hudson bay:.

Hudson Bay provides a crucial habitat for various marine life, including beluga whales and seals. It also influences the seasonal movements and behavior of polar bears. This is one of the reasons why Churchill is a prime location for polar bear tours.

The vast tundra of Churchill is a land of rugged beauty, characterized by low-lying vegetation, lichens, and mosses. This treeless expanse supports an abundance of species, including polar bears, Arctic foxes, and Arctic hares. Migratory birds flock to the region during the summer.

3. Boreal Forest:

The boreal forest surrounding Churchill showcases a different facet of the region's natural environment. This vast woodland is home to diverse species, including black bears, wolves, moose, and a variety of bird species. The boreal forest provides a vital habitat for these creatures, offering shelter and sustenance within its dense canopy.

Key Species:

1. polar bears :.

Churchill is known as the polar bear capital of the world. A significant population of these majestic creatures inhabit the area, particularly during the fall months. These months are prime polar bear season.

2. Arctic foxes :

With their small ears and thick, white coat, these foxes are well-suited to the Arctic tundra, where they blend seamlessly into the snowy landscape. Their coats change to brown in the spring or summer.

3. Arctic hares :

Arctic hares can be found darting across the tundra, their white fur serving as camouflage against the snow, protecting them from predators.

#2 Travel tip: Crossing the street

Churchill has a small population and only a few shops and restaurants. Don’t worry too much about looking for traffic before you cross the street, but always look left and right for a polar bear!

polar bear tours churchill canada

As Churchill is a small town in a remote location, there are limited accommodation options. There are cozy inns and simple bed-and-breakfasts, rather than 5-star resorts. For example, the Tundra Inn is a charming family-run property offering comfortable, spacious rooms. For the months of October and November, during peak polar bear season, it is best to reserve Churchill accommodation early.

Winnipeg is usually the starting point for polar bear tours, since it’s easy to catch a flight to Churchill from here. Our polar bear packages often include a night in a Winnipeg airport hotel before your flight to Churchill. If you want to extend your vacation, you could stay in Winnipeg longer — add on nights before or after your polar bear viewing adventure.

When you imagine viewing polar bears in Canada, a warm sunny day might not be what you’re picturing. But summer is when polar bears first return to Churchill, Manitoba. After spending the winter hunting seals on the ice of Hudson Bay, these impressive animals make their way back to the Churchill area in early to mid-summer, when the sea ice begins to melt.

Along with the opportunity to see Canada's famous polar bears, a visit to the Hudson Bay region in summer offers warmer weather than in the traditional fall viewing season (October/November). There’s also plenty of chances to see other Canadian wildlife up close and personal in the ruggedly beautiful tundra and taiga — the forests of cold, subarctic regions — landscapes of the Manitoba coastline. During the months of July and August, the Churchill area is also a fantastic place to see beluga whales who migrate into the warm, shallow waters of the Churchill River to give birth and feed on fish.

What the Trip is Like

This trip is rated Level 1+, Easy , according to our trip grading system, and is appropriate for anyone in good health who is physically active. Tundra Buggy vehicles are used to explore the Churchill Wildlife Management Area in search of polar bears and there is an optional dog sled ride. Some agility is required for getting in and out of vehicles and exploring towns where walkways may be icy or snowy, so you must feel confident and stable on your feet.

The weather in Churchill varies greatly from season to season, and the wind coming off of Hudson Bay can often make temperatures feel even cooler than reported. Temperatures can vary from -20°C to 0°C (-4°F to 32°F), but strong winds can make the temperature colder (the "wind chill" factor). The Buggies are heated; however, when we see bears, windows go down and the interior quickly cools. Dressing in warm layers is the best way to stay comfortable. There is a service to rent arctic clothing ahead of time and pick it up upon arrival. Please ask our Area Specialist for details.

Daylight in Churchill During your adventure you can expect approximately 9 hours of daylight. The later in the season, the fewer hours of daylight there are.

Weather patterns over Hudson Bay in autumn can make the sky quite overcast. Please keep in mind that any Northern Lights are considered a bonus instead of a guarantee during these departures.

Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

See Polar Bears in Manitoba

Churchill is one of the few human settlements where polar bears can be observed in the wild.

Churchill is one of the best places in the world to see polar bears because it lies within the natural habitat of a healthy population of polar bears. In the winter months, the bears are feasting on seals on the ice of Hudson Bay. In the summer, they make their way to land, lounging in bright fireweed or walking along the rocky shore.

Polar bear illustration

See polar bears up close in Churchill , located in northern Manitoba.

In October and November, as the temperatures begin to drop, the bears begin to move back to the edge of the bay, waiting to begin their winter feast.

Tundra Vehicle Tours

There are many different ways to see Churchill’s polar bears. Unique tundra vehicles are designed to move carefully over the uneven terrain of the tundra. They provide a safe way to view and photograph bears. Most excursions on tundra vehicles are all day and include lunch onboard , returning to town to overnight in your hotel. Tundra vehicles connected like rail cars offer sleeping accommodations right on the tundra – a totally unique way to immerse yourself in the experience.

Tundra Walking Tours

You can also stay at a wilderness lodge (complete with protective fence), a short plane ride away from Churchill. This experience includes walking tours with an experienced guide to see the bears at ground level. In the summer months, tundra excursions on smaller scale, open air rhino vehicles may also be included.

In the summer months, you can hop aboard a custom-made boat or zodiac for a polar bear viewing experience. These coastal tours offer a chance to see bears on along the rocky shoreline or even swimming in the water.

Helicopter Tours

Helicopter tours let you see polar bears and the beautiful tundra landscape from the air. These 60- and 90-minute tours offer flexibility to move in the direction of the bears’ migration patterns. Plus, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of tundra, taiga and boreal forests.

About Churchill’s polar bears

Frequently called “Lords of the Arctic”, these animals are huge. Male polar bears can grow to more than 600 kg (1,320 lbs) and stand 3.05 metres (10 feet) tall. But despite their massive size, these bears can move with surprising speed.

Polar bears have a highly acute sense of smell. These skilled hunters can pick up a scent from over 30 kilometres away and can detect the presence of seals under three feet of snow and ice.

The western Hudson Bay polar bears are the most southern population of polar bears anywhere in the world.

Polar bear playing its back on the green tundra.

Studies indicate there are between 900 and 1,000 polar bears in the western Hudson Bay population.

Conservation efforts

Companies offering polar bear experiences adhere to strict guidelines through Manitoba Conservation that, for example, limit the number of tundra vehicles operating in and around Churchill and outline distance regulations.

The number of commercial tour operators and the number of vehicles permitted on the high-use areas east of the town site continues to be restricted. Measures are also taken to restrict travel to existing trails and designate some areas as off-limits.
