Princess cruise dining FAQ

princess cruise hours

Is food on Princess Cruises included?

Sit-down meals in the main dining room, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, are always included on a Princess cruise, and the menu varies somewhat daily. Also included is a buffet, either called World Fresh Marketplace or Horizon Court, depending on the ship, as well as fast casual and grab-and-go spots on board that serve pizza, tacos, burgers, pastries and ice cream.

Specialty restaurants including Crown Grill, Princess's steak and seafood house, and Sabatini's, the signature Italian restaurant, require a surcharge that's priced at a flat rate per adult or child; some menu items also require an additional surcharge no matter the age of the guest.

Related: The ultimate guide to Princess Cruises ships and itineraries

Are drinks included on Princess cruise ships?

Select beverages are always included: iced tea, hot tea, brewed coffee, hot chocolate, milk, fruit juice, lemonade and tap water. Everything else, including soft drinks, wine, beer, cocktails, spirits and specialty coffees, must either be purchased a la carte or through one of the cruise line's beverage packages .

Do I need reservations?

Reservations are encouraged for the main dining room and the specialty restaurants, and it's best to make them as early as possible ; walk-in parties will be accommodated on a space-available basis. Guests can make reservations via the Princess MedallionClass app or at guest services once you're on board. If you wish to eat at the same time every night, you can do so by reserving your tables in advance.

Platinum and Elite Captain's Circle members have early access to reservations. Passengers booked in a Full Suite or Reserve Collection Mini-Suite don't need to make dining reservations as they will always be accommodated; they also have access to a dedicated space in the main dining room with expedited seating and an expanded menu.

Does Princess Cruises have an evening dress code?

"Smart casual" attire will be appropriate for the main dining room, buffet and fast-casual restaurants. You might want to pack something dressier for the specialty restaurants or one of the more upscale dining experiences like Chef's Table, 360 or a winemaker dinner.

On sailings that are five nights or longer, there will be one or more formal nights, which do require adhering to a dress code in the dining venues . Cocktail dresses, evening gowns or dressy pantsuits are appropriate for women, while dark suits, tuxedos or dinner jackets and slacks are required for men , along with dressy footwear. If you don't want to dress up or forgot appropriate attire, you're welcome to dine at the buffet or any of the other casual dining options on board during formal night.

Is there assigned seating in the main dining room?

There is currently no assigned seating at any dining venues on board Princess ships; however, that is changing for cruises departing on or after September 14. For those sailings, guests can choose between traditional seating (with assigned dining times, tables, tablemates and waiters in the main dining room) or flexible seating. Within flexible seating, passengers can either make reservations to dine at a specific time on any given night or walk in when they're hungry to access the first available table.

Until September, Princess will not offer assigned seating, and guests can choose to make reservations or not for the main dining room. If you are a solo diner or part of a couple or small group, your host might ask if you would like to sit with another party of a similar size in the main dining room; the choice is up to you.

What if I have dietary restrictions?

You can use the Cruise Personalizer to indicate your dietary preferences, including requests for low-sodium, low-fat, low-sugar and vegetarian diets. Kosher meals and baby food are available with advanced written requests. If you have allergies or medical needs related to food, you must inform Princess in writing — check the line's website for more details. Princess Cruises also recently introduced a series of vegan menus for dinner in the main dining room, including starters, soups, salads, pastas and main dishes.

Where can I get snacks on board?

princess cruise hours

You'll find lots of spots to grab a quick bite, dessert or coffee, including Coffee & Cones, Patisserie, Swirls Ice Cream Bar, The Pastry Shop, International Cafe and Gelateria — options vary depending on the ship. Food at these venues is included, but there is a charge for specialty coffees and teas unless you have a beverage package.

Is room service included on Princess Cruises?

Guests can use the designated button on their cabin's phone to order room service 24 hours a day; each order incurs a $5 delivery fee, which is waived for those with Princess Plus or Princess Premier status.

You can also use the OceanNow feature in the Princess Medallion Class app to order food to be delivered to your cabin or anywhere else on the ship, like the pool deck. This feature is included with Princess Plus and Princess Premium; otherwise, there is a one-time access fee of $14.99 per person per voyage and a $5 delivery fee per order. Food and beverage surcharges may apply for some items ordered via room service.

Bigger ship, better views: 3 takeaways from Princess Cruises' newest vessel

I was rushing to make my dinner reservation on Princess Cruises’ new ship. But when I arrived at the restaurant, the view made me stop.

From the windows at the sushi eatery Makoto Ocean – part of a sphere-shaped structure near the middle of the vessel – I saw the sun sinking below the horizon, a reddish-orange dot on the Mediterranean Sea. The Sun Princess facilitates scenes like that by design.

“We wanted to make sure that within how we designed the (venues) and placed the furniture, we gave maximum opportunity for our guests to be able to celebrate those outward views,” Denise Saviss, Princess’ vice president of entertainment experience, told USA TODAY. “It is really, really unique to have so much glass on the ship.”

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

That was one of several striking features during a recent sailing (the ship is now cruising the Mediterranean before it moves to the Caribbean in October). Here are three takeaways from the first in the line’s aptly named Sphere Class.

1. The design showcases views at sea and in port

Makoto isn’t the only venue that offers that kind of view.

Other spaces inside the Sphere – which also houses lobby-slash-entertainment venue The Piazza – feature similarly sweeping vistas across decks 7, 8 and 9. I watched the light sparkle on the water while I sipped coffee one morning at International Café, and patrons dining at Alfredo’s Pizzeria can take in the scenery during their meal from many seats.

That’s also true elsewhere on the ship. At Horizons Dining Room, floor-to-ceiling windows face the ship’s wake. At the other end of the vessel, the Dome, a geodesic structure that Princess has said was inspired by the hills of Santorini, is like a massive solarium.

The space – which will also host shows including acrobatics – has multiple tiers of loungers, an indoor-outdoor pool and the Cascade Bar (which comes in handy for cooling off, as it felt a bit muggy in the Dome at one point on a sunny sea day).

The overall effect helped to bring the outside in.

2. The ship is bigger but still intimate

Sun Princess is the largest ship in the Princess fleet, and the 21-deck vessel can accommodate 4,300 guests. But that doesn’t mean everything is huge.

Given the scale of the offerings, a number of spaces on board feel notably intimate. One night, I walked to Good Spirits at Sea, a cocktail bar crafted in partnership with mixologist Rob Floyd that also hosts classes, and thought I was lost before stumbling upon it tucked around a corner on Deck 7. Inside, the 40-person venue offered a laid-back alternative to other more boisterous nightlife options.

On Deck 9, the ship’s buffet-like venue, The Eatery, gives way to narrower hallways toward the aft with backlit wood paneling and benches. At the end, they open back up to reveal specialty restaurants The Catch by Rudi and The Butcher’s Block by Dario (from Princess’ head of culinary arts, Rudi Sodamin, and in partnership with famed butcher Dario Cecchini, respectively).

Even the multi-configuration Princess Arena felt cozier than its near-1,000-guest capacity would suggest. I sat in the second-to-last row of my section for a performance by the vocal group ODY·C and was still close enough to see clearly.

3. The line leans into family-friendly activities

Part of Sun Princess’ expanded footprint has been used to broaden the line’s family offerings.

Park19, a new space on the ship’s top decks, features a variety of activities in an open-air setting. Saviss said the line worked to balance the interests of core customers and a growing family market “and make sure we're prioritizing spaces that everybody can enjoy.”

“There are some attractions that I think naturally, at first blush, people would say, ‘Oh, it's just for kids,’ but actually, the space is really comprehensive,” she said. “Our attractions are available for many different levels of ability and mobility.”

Those include Coastal Climb, an obstacle course that culminates in 360-degree views from The Lookout observation deck (the highest point accessible to guests on the ship, also reachable via elevator) and The Net ropes course.

On Sea Breeze, billed as the first Rollglider on a cruise ship, passengers will glide along the outer edges of the ship on an electric track (the ride will also be ADA-accessible, though Saviss said some mobility is required for maneuvering into the seat).

It’s as close as the ship gets to an amusement park (Princess’ version). “We're not running the rat race, if you will, of like, who can do it bigger, better,” Saviss said. “If you want to just have a really incredible bird's-eye view of Sun Princess, and in and around where the ship is sailing, you can do that. But there is an option to push a little lever while you're riding it and dial up the speed a bit faster, and then it does become a bit more thrilling.”

The ride was not yet available when I was on board, as the line moved through a testing, certification and training process, but is expected to open on April 27. Sun Princess’ original launch was delayed with the cruise line citing “additional technical work” needed at the shipyard, which pushed back the opening of some onboard amenities.

When is the best time to take a cruise?: We broke it down by region.

There is also a hammock area to chill when guests need a break, a recreational court that can host activities from pingpong to morning meditation, a jogging track and more. Elsewhere on board, guests will find the Firefly Park kids club and hangout spaces Neon Grove and The Underground for tweens and teens, respectively.

Anyone currently on or just recently off (this year) the caribbean princess that can tell me the fitness center hours. I looked back at my past patters and have 2 conflicting times...1 cruise stated 7am to 10pm another 6am to 10pm..trying to see if we can get some workouts in before excursions and pool lounging. Didn't they shorten the hours, because the fitness center is above occupied cabins and the "thump thump" was a problem. Let me know, I have a Lido forward in September....

Recent posts have indicated an 8 to 8 schedule....but it seems some people do not abide by it, not being considerate of those in the cabins below

Last time we were on the ship it was 7-10 and the actual fitness center area was behind locked doors so people have to follow the rules unless they have the key to unlock the doors.

I am mainly interested in using the treadmills or the bikes which should not bother the cabins below..I could see the classes they teach with music bothering the cabins...but at the same time those that book under the theatre, lounges and such know that there is a possibility of overhead noise. Just like we booked on Riviera for the sideways room...and are prepared to have to deal with lido deck noise.

Please anyone with recent experience or patters they can post would be great.

Apparently the treadmills are the big issue, because they cause a loud "thump thump" that can be heard in the cabins below. As I stated above, a recent post, from the beginning of March, indicates the hours are 8 - 8

ok thanks..i read your post about the hours as more of a question vs a statement.

I am not here to debate whether or not it is fair that the cabins below can hear or are bothered, was just curious the times...and sadly the 8 to 8 wont work as we have excursions that leave around that time..was hoping for a quick 20 min workout before breakfast and then off to our excursions but I guess that wont work...really sad I bet a lot of people miss that quick workout before the day gets going for most and the gym gets busy.

I can understand your frustration. As for the new ships, that don't have that "jogging" promenade deck on deck 7, pushes runners to the top deck in the sun and wind. As for the locations of the other fitness centers, you would think deck 5 would be a better area for it, as there are no passenger cabins below, therefore no disturbance or "rocking" of the ship less noticeable, and possible expand the hours longer to accommodate those who wish to work out.

Denmal

When we were on the ship in January it was open early but the treadmills had signs that they did not open until 8am...We used the bikes as early as 6 am but there are only 4 bikes

yeah we may have to walk or jog on the promenade since the CB does have a wrap around one albeit not quite the same as a treadmill walk. Was just looking for an option to burn some calories since it will be a b2b and need to make sure we can still fit in clothes...haha.

Yeah lower might have been better but that is where the theatre is and I would guess the dancers are more at risk for injury doing what they do vs what we guests do in the gym......plus then they wouldn't have the view...lol. Too bad they didn't invest in some better soundproofing around areas that have guests and public areas. But then again some could say we know the risk when booking a cabin under/above a public space that there could be noise...because soon there will be no late show or late music as those locations have cabins above or below the noise...no deck party cause there are cabins below...where will it end.. I am a light sleeper so I get the noise thing but then we book cabins where I know "reasonably" that there should be no noise from those type of events.

Ah the bikes do open early...great that is an option. great thanks for the info. I thought it was that the doors didn't open til 8. I can always do some squats, situps, bikes something like that to get some type of workout in...if I can remember my fav moves from our workout dvds...haha

Too bad they can't reconfigure the area where the "art gallery" is, maybe switch up those two, put the fitness center where the "art gallery" is. But my opinion is lose the art gallery all together.......

As a side note....in MY opinion, and only MY opinion. deck 7 promenade deck joggers/runners should not be allowed to do so, as people sit and enjoy the views, and a few times I literally have just about been run over by someone who carelessly runs by when I was walking along. I was also standing by the railing, when to turn around, and again, here comes somebody running by, with a "coming through"......

I agree on losing the art gallery...while it does provide some hilarious comments sometimes in my group at some of the off the wall pics...it is a wasted space and I don't think I have seen to many people at the art show/auction things either...but then I am sure there are some that think why do we want to workout on vacay...which used to be me...but this b2b I might need to do a little bit more than just take the stairs all the time and strolls on the promenade...just too much good food that I don't want to pass up on. Plus we workout and eat healthy all year this is usually our splurge time.

I know for a fact that the art gallery is a third party, paying the cruise lines for the space used on the ship and a percentage of the "profits" This company has had more than its share of complaints by people who purchase, what they think are authentic pieces, only to find they are only copies. But this aside, there is no way they are going away. They pay for the "premium" square footage. hense, the fitness space is on top of the ship, where those who spend time there, don't normally spend time in the "gallery.

Yup it is all about the mighty $$$$$
