Argostoli greece tours & ionian islands excursions.

Argostoli is a town on the island of Kefalonia, one of several Ionian Islands in the Ionian Sea near Greece. Argostoli is also the capital of Kefalonia. As a result of a 1953 earthquake that destroyed nearly all structures built on Kefalonia, Argostoli's rebuilt streets feel very new. And though it might lack much architectural gravitas, it has a lively buzz about it, with Lithostroto, a long pedestrian-only shopping street, running through a gauntlet of stylish shops, boutiques, souvenir shops, and cafes. Other popular stops on Lithostroto are the Catholic Church of St. Nicholas and a tiny museum dedicated to the Italian Acqui Division - who fought against the Germans in World War II.

The main focus of the activity in Argostoli is in charming Plateia Valianou, where locals come to chat and eat at the many restaurants. Greek food, such as the famous traditional Kefalonian meat pie, is easy to find here, so try to visit if you can. In the summer, kantadoroi (serenaders) wander the streets singing kantades, traditional Greek songs accompanied by guitar and mandolin.

If a day on the waters is what you're looking for, take a trip to Myrtos Beach or Melissani Lake. Myrtos Beach is famous for its mile-and-a-half arc, deep blue waters, and white pebbles. You can soak in the sun, enjoy a drink, or go for a swim. Melissani Lake, an underground lake hidden in a cave, is also a popular tourist destination. The waters from the lake of Melissani Cave lead to the sea in Karavomylos. Take a tour through this beautiful lake of crystal clear waters while rays of sunlight beam through the top of the cavern.

Only a short distance from Melissani Lake is the Drogarati Cave in Sami, Greece. This is a wondrous cave full of beautiful stalagmites rising from the ground and stalactites dropping from the ceiling and is believed to be around 150 million years old. This limestone cave was discovered only 300 years ago after an earthquake created an entrance and revealed its existence. It has a constant temperature of 18 degrees Celsius (64 degrees Fahrenheit) which feels great in the hot summer months. Drogarati Cave also has an event space where concerts and events are sometimes held due to the fantastic natural acoustics.

You can also enjoy nature by visiting the Koutavos Lagoon's nature preserve, where you can spot endangered Loggerhead sea turtles swimming out into the seawater.

Assos Kefalonia

Argostoli has been the capital of the Kefallonia Region since 1757. It is the island’s commercial and administrative centre, and has beautiful neo-classical buildings. It’s a modern city with a remarkable historic and cultural tradition. Argostoli, built amphitheatrically with a view to the Lagoon of Koutavos, overlooks the fir tree-covered Aenos. Viewing Catavothres which is one of the rarest phenomena: large quantities of seawater penetrate the land at the location of Agii Theodori at Lassi without retrogressing, re-appearing by the village of Karavomylos near Sami. Continues to Katavothres (the sinks) where seawater enters cracks near the shore and disappears following an underground route across the whole island. Then moving towards the Lighthouse of Saint Theodore where two centuries ago, helped ships approaching the shore, to avoid the rocks. The tour after continues at the monument of the Italians over the pine-tree covered “round of Lassi”. On top of the hill – a monument of modern history of Kefalonia – was created in honor of the thousands of Italians who have fallen under the fire of the Germans refusing to hand over their weapons to them. The route continues in the popular area of Lassi , which stands out for its natural beauty, nightlife and tourist infrastructure that meet every requirement – at that area the well organized beaches of Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos are located. Continuing for Lakithra , where philhellene poet Lord Byron inspired his poems during his stay on the island in 1823, from the location called “Kallithea” the visitor is overlooking the airport, the island of Zeus with the chapel of Our Lady of Diotissa, and the island of Zakynthos. Driving uphill towards the village of Kourkoumelata we enjoy the panoramic view from the “High Class Area of Kefalonia!” In this village anyone can gaze at the beauty of the houses! The village features beautiful, well maintained and manicured buildings. A special feature of the village is the variety of designs in the construction of houses, which are not located by the road, but follow rules of great urban planning. Heading towards “Peratata”, we will be visiting the Monastery of St. Andrew . The monastery was founded in the Byzantine era. Within the monastery the Ecclesiastical Museum is located and it is open to public. The nuns involved in weaving, iconography, craftsmanship as well as agricultural crops and gardens. The monastery also operates the maintenance workshop of portable icons. Our next destination is the Castle of St. George , a remarkable Venetian castle with subsequent interventions mainly Venetian of 16th century. View to Argostoli and Livatho is stunning. Next stop is the Robola Wine Cooperative of Kefalonia in “Omala” valley. At the winery you can visit the Museum or Robola, and taste free of charge the wines as well as choose and purchase from our wide range of wines. Next stop on this route is the center of faith in Kefalonia, the Holy Monastery of St. Gerasimos in the “Omala” valley. There, twice a year thousands of believers attending to venerate devoutly Saint Gerasimos relic and to pray. The Saints have been attributed numerous miracles and certainly the landscape is very devout.

We are heading towards Drogaratti Cave , one of the largest and most beautiful natural sights nearby Sami. According to archeologists, Drogaratti Cave is aged over 100 million years. The depth of the cave is about 60 meters, with an average temperature of 18 °C and fairly high humidity (90%). We are moving towards Sami and Antisamos beach , the famous beach from the movie “The Captain Corelli’s Mandolin”, which reveals the magic of Kefalonian landscape. The route fascinates visitor, as we cross one of the greenest parts of the island with towering pine trees. We will stop at an appropriate place to take some photos. The beach is pebbly with white sand and surrounded by green hills. The waters of the beach are azure crystal. The beach is organized with snack bar, sun loungers, umbrellas and water sports. Always honored with the distinction of a blue flag. We reach the picturesque village of Agia Efimia . It’s a quiet town sporting wide streets and good urban-planning, with a port where numerous yachts from all over the world flock in the summertime. Next we will be visiting the unique cave lake of Melissani , where we meet a rare geological phenomenon. The water enters the limestone rock, erodes the rocks and creates cavities in a process called karstification. The tour of the visitor is by boat and can enjoy the magnificent spectacle of stalactites, crystal clear water and sunlight which are coexisting harmoniously. The tour continues at the famous beach of Myrtos . The view from above Myrtos is magnificent. Myrtos beach is well known for the contrast that makes the white pebble beach with the different shades that the sea water is taking, due to sea currents, and the dark green forests of the region. The beach wins every year the blue flag, and is well organized for every aspect. Before returning back we owe to visit two of the most famous areas of Kefalonia. The scenic villages of Assos and Fiscardo. Asso s is built amphitheatrically around the peninsula, which is surrounded by lush areas. The village retains its authentic traditional Ionian architecture and rich greenery of tall pines and cypress trees meets the blue waters of the Ionian sea, composing an idyllic landscape that only nature could create. Fiskardo is an old fishing village whose houses were left untouched by the earthquake of 1953. Today is one of the most famous tourist resorts of Greece. It has an excellent tourist infrastructure with restaurants, cafes and bars and its sheltered harbor is full of yachts. Fiskardo is also famous for its traditional architecture and the cosmopolitan port. Is the homeland of the famous poet of the sea, Nikos Kavvadias. A walk in the traditional village will fill you with unique images of aristocratic Kefalonia that cannot be found anywhere else on the island. The old preservable 18th century mansions with small balconies, narrow streets, dozens of tourist shops, taverns and cafes operating around the harbor creating pictures taken from a painting..

Assos Peninsula and Venetian Fortress Much of Assos history revolves around the castle during the Medieval period when Kefalonia was under the Venetian dominion. Plans to built the castle at Assos commenced in 1584 when the Kefalonian council sent a delegation to Venice, asking for the creation of a new fortress to protect the people from Turkish and piratical raids. In the event of a war or imminent pirate attack, the villagers would then be able to seek refuge within the fortress compound. The Venetian’s aim was to create a powerful fortress-city,inside which a population of the community would permanently reside. Agios Georgios was the only castle in the island at the time, but it didn’t provide adequate defence for the island , and so it was that the Assos peninsula was chosen as the location of the new castle. It was considered that the sheer cliff drops of the peninsula with aheight of 155 metres made the area naturally fort-like and virtually unconquerable. Contraction started in 1593 and the fortress was rapidly completed soon after 1595. Shortly after the castle was built. Assos became the capital of the northern Kefalonia for a few years. Fiskardo free time- lunch Fiskardo lies 54 Km northeast of Argostoli. It is a beautiful and quiet (with the exception of August) town with Venetian houses to be situated around a beautiful harbour. Part of Fiskardo charm is being the only town in Kefalonia not to have been devastated by the earthquake in 1953. It is a major sailing port.

Leisure & Sightseeing: Myrtos photo stop - Agia Efimia -Lake Melissani – Ainos mountain (7 hours)

We continue through Ag Efimia -Sami. We reach the picturesque village of Agia Efimia. It’s a quiet town sporting wide streets and good urban-planning, with a port where numerous yachts from all over the world flock in the summertime. Sami is a beautiful town built by the seafront and one of the four major cities comprising the four-state Kefallinia, was well-known from Homer’s epic poetry.

Mountain of Ainos As if rising from the infinite blue sea, standing tall and solid, mount Ainos features a National Park of unique beauty and rarity. The National Park of Ainos in Kefalonia is close to Argostoli and Sami and it is the smallest national park in Greece. In the fir forest appear various specimens of bushes such as gortsies, krategi, etc. Northwest of Ainos in Roudi mountain, lush vegetation of bushes covers a ground of 46 hectares and is a separate part inside the park. In the highest rocky areas prevail briar genistas. Αpart from the rich flora of the park, its fauna is also of high importance. Mammals such as fox, beech marten, hare and others, as well as rare birds and serpents (petroperdika and fidaetos) shelter here. Inside the Park shelter the famous wild horses of Ainos. Some claim these are descendants of the wild horses of Thessaly, one of three ancient Greek breeds now extinct, since their similarity to ancient horse sculptures is really impressive. Others reckon they are descended from escaped or released livestock. They managed to survive in the wild nature in scant of number herds. Today only a few dozens have remained in the slopes of Ainos.

Leisure & Sightseeing: (south Kefalonia) Argostoli – St George Castle – St Gerasimos Monastery – Skala - Poros (6 hours)

St George’s Castle Hill Sitting proudly high on a hill the castle offers commanding views from all around. The castle is on a hill 7 km from Argostoli and dominates the south part of island of Cephalonia and the bay of Argostoli. The building of the castle started by the Byzantines and it was completed by the Venetians. It was the administrative center of the island until the 18th century, when the capital was moved to Argostoli.

Skala Resort Skala is a picturesque village located in the municipal unit of Eleios-Pronnoi, some 39 km south from the island’s main town of Argostoli and 14 km SW of Poros, in the south of Cephalonia, one of the Ionian Islands of Greece. Skala’s ‘blue flag’ beach is a three kilometre stretch of sand with a shingle foreshore with a backdrop of pine trees. It is a large sandy beach with crystal clear blue waters. The beach of Skala is one of the most beautiful beaches in Kefalonia with crystal turquoise waters and it is an ideal destination for swimming and relaxing in your holidays in the island.

Poros Poros is a picturesque village with a lovely port, and a population of about 1100 inhabitants. It serves the harbour of Patras and the port of Killini (in the Peloponnese). It is on a small rise and has a lovely main square full of taverns, shops and traditional cafes. The dense and verdant vegetation along with the crystal blue sea make this village one of the most beautiful areas of the island.

Nature Tours: Plant Life (5hours)

You can taste Arbutus berry, Carob and other fruits, as you are trekking among the trees. This tour can be tailor-made to suit your wishes and can be a stand alone tour or mixed in with other tours or activities if desired. It is a mixture of jeep travel and light walking suitable for all levels.

Caving Tours (5hours)

Kefalonia has various different caves of interest including Melissani, Agalaki and Drogarati. Drogarati cave, which is 37 metres below ground and is said to be 150 million years old, has huge stalactites which hang from the roof like a veil. The red colour in the rock is from the iron content and the white from the chalk and limestone. Discover a mystical underground world on a caving adventure under the supervision of experienced guides and equipped with the latest safety equipment. We can organise these trips based on your level ranging from caves of 20 metres deep to 120 metres deep. The basic level of caving needs no prior experience and is suitable for all abilities, the caves are not narrow and there is plenty of light for a clear vision. The professional level is a much longer descent and is in Kefalonia’s largest cave. The expert level has the longest descent of 120 metres, is very steep and requires a change of equipment and ropes during the activity.

Jeep Safari - Ainos Mountain National Park Tour (6 hours)

The tour starts in the direction of Mount Ainos, the Black Mountain and its national park. On the slopes of the park the unique Kefalonia fir can be seen and on Mount Roudi, Holm Oak, Arbutus, Carob and shrubs such as Heather, Thyme, Amaranth and many others. Discover rare species of trees and flowers such as the rare, wild orchid. Try to spot the wild mountain horses and enjoy panoramic views of Kefalonia. Fill your senses with sights and smells. Mount. Ainos National Park is the perfect place to take in some Mountain scenery, wildlife and plant life. It has a total length of 10 km and its highest peak is Megas Soros, at 1628m. Recently the road to the peak of the mountain was laid with tarmac allowing easy access to the top. However, the aim of our tour is to take, “The road less travelled.” We will travel through rough, track roads that are off the beaten track and most importantly away from the traditional, well worn tourist routes. You will experience Mount. Ainos in its original beauty. We will traverse the mountain from the southern part to see the wild horses and un-spoilt nature. Stopping the jeep we will walk for 20 minutes to the peak, Megas Soros, here you will have 360 degree panoramic views. Feel like one of the many birds of prey you will see, perched on top of the mountain seeing through the birds eyes surveying the beauty of Kefalonia, the shimmering sea, the greenery and the facing island of Zakinthos, a magical place where all the elements meet and fuse together to offer an absolutely breathtaking experience. Returning to the jeep we continue to the second mountain in the National Park, Mount. Routhi. Mount Rhoudi is an extension of the range to the north-west; its highest peak is Mount Yioupari, which rises up to 1125m. This mountain will give you an unsurpassed and spectacular view of the east side of the mountain with views towards Sami and the mythological island of Ithaca. You may also catch glimpses of eagles, hawks, falcons, turtles, rabbits and other mountain wildlife in its natural habitat. After Mount Routhi we head to the Omala Valley, which is well-known for its famous Monastery of Agios Gerasimos. Agios Gerasimos, a former monk, is the patron saint of the island. He founded the monastery and lived there until his death on the 16th of August 1579. On that date every year big festivals and processions take place. Many miracles are connected to the saint’s relics and icon. Over the centuries the monastery got rich and powerful and its extensive surrounding properties the delicious Robola wine grapes are grown. We travel into a ‘ghost village’ by way of an old mules track, made by the Venetians and one of the first roads ever made on the island, known by few and travelled only by knowledgeable locals. We make a stop here at the old tumbled-down houses, which were destroyed by the earthquake. You have an opportunity to see the original architecture, structure, planning and lay-out of one of the oldest villages on the island. After this we take a ten-minute break. We then move onwards to one of the fine beaches of Livathos with its beautiful, yellow sandy shores and glistening, turquoise-blue waters. Slip beneath the cooling surface and relax on the sun-warmed sand in the shade of an umbrella listening to the sound of the waves lapping the shore. We will stay here for 1 ½ hours, although you may want to stay a lifetime.

Ithaca Tour (8 hours)

Visit to our sister island of Ithaca, home of the mythological hero Odysseus, one of the greatest heroes of the Trojan War. Departing from Sami it’s just a 35 minute ferry ride to Ithaca arriving in the port of Pisso Aetos. We first of all make our way to the capital town of Vathy where you have time for shopping, an ideal opportunity to purchase some of the hand made lace produced by the local ladies or to pay a visit to the towns archaeological or folklore museums. Monastery of Panagia Katharon (distance 10 km.), located on the Mt. Neritos at a height of 600 meters (1,967 feet), with its spectacular views to the whole of the Southern part of Ithaca. From there, you continue to the nearby (distance 2 km.) village of Anoghi with its renowned church of Panagia, known to have renovated to its current form at the end of the 17th century but believed to be dating back to the 12th century. The church is dedicated to Panagia and its interior features notable and impressively preserved Byzantine frescos.

From there, you continue to the village of Stavros (distance 5 km.). This is the biggest town in the northern part of the island, having Ulysses’ effigy in the main square, and an interesting archaeological museum. The findings of the excavations that took place in the area are exhibited here and you will have the chance to have a short liik at this small yet most interesting collection dating from the Mycenean and Corinthian Periods.

You will then continue further to the north, to the piscturesque village of Kioni (distance 5 km.). This traditional settlement is one of the loveliest in Ithaca with typical houses built amphitheatrically round a small wind protected cove. Here, you will have some free time to explore the souvenir shops or quaint cafes, before boarding your vehicle for the return trip back to the port of Piso Aetos, [with a photo stop at the narrowest part of Ithaca (650 m.) Chani with simultaneous views to Cephalonia and mainland Greece], there should you want you can explore this beautiful traditional town with the fine architecture, small narrow roads, beautiful shops and a very interesting and organized naval/cultural museum.

  • J0sephR 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Bad tour description When we booked the cave trip, the Oceania brochure stated that a flight of stairs must be negotiated. That flight turned out to be 200 steps, plus another 20 steps for the lake. We ended up blowing off the tour and when we complained to the reception manager about the faulty description, he said Oceania often changes trip times and descriptions at the last minute. At $900 a day, Oceania isn’t cheap….and I would expect better service. Their breakfast lambs are good, anyway. Read more Written 2 May 2024

Pickup was a bit chaotic, but we all found eachother and got off on time. Eva was a great guide - very pleasant and informative and made sure we all were on track without feeling pushed or rushed. I loved the sites chosen, especially the views from the fortress on the peak. Read more Written 22 October 2023

At this point when he started up rocks were hitting the underside of the bus and the driver was definitely stressed about the noise. Booked a private shuttle, we booked a 12 passenger bus for the return and was less expensive and much more comfortable. 2 in our group returned on the bus and told the guide the other 10 would not return Read more Written 4 October 2023

  • M W 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wonderful tour in Kelafonia-small group, knowledgeable guide, well run and overall great experience ! We had a wonderful tour of Assos village, the caves and a winery! I was initially skeptical because I normally don't like bus tours, but our guide, Katherine made the trip in Kelafonia one of our favorites of our cruise to italy and greece. Her English was excellent (she is British but has lived on the island for over 15 years) and she explained so much about the island. There were only 12 of us and we were the only people at the caves and the winery! I was so happy we booked with Avalon and not through the cruise. It was all very special. Nikko our driver also was great at navigating the curvy roads. I would definitely recommend Avalon travel in Kalafonia Read more Written 24 September 2023

  • F3054CGjoshc 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Nice attractions, poorly organized The Melissani Cave lake is a cool attraction certainly worth seeing. You are in a small row boat with about a dozen people and the guides are friendly and cooperative with taking pictures. The whole ride is only about ten minutes though and if you have to wait in line for an extended period of time to get in then the whole experience may seem less worthwhile. In our case the travel company guides did a poor job timing things and we ended up waiting in line in the heat for over 90 minutes for the ten minute ride. There is a smallish gift shop and snack bar there while you wait that may entertain you for a short time but that wears out quickly. The traffic flow around the site is also challenging and our tour bus basically got stuck which meant we had no choice but to wait out the long lines. Had we started the tour on time from Argostoli the lines might not have been so long by the time we got there, which increased our level of frustration. As a result we never got to go Mrytos Beach at all. Instead we were taken to another nearby beach that was supposedly less crowded. Our time there was limited though as a result of waiting so long at the first stop so it ended up not being that enjoyable. I don’t fault the travel company for the long lines — that’s what you get during peak season, but I do fault them for being disorganized and not having better plans in place. The whole experience could have been managed much better. Read more Written 27 August 2023
