Looking for the best beaches in Puerto Vallarta? Let me help! I live in Puerto Vallarta and love spending time by the beach, so I’ve been hard at work researching to bring you this ultimate list of Puerto Vallarta beaches .

When it comes to beaches in Puerto Vallarta, there’s no shortage of amazing ones to choose from. It’s one of the main reasons millions of visitors flock here each year!

Puerto Vallarta beaches are as varied as they are beautiful. You can find a beach right in the downtown area with incredible oceanfront restaurants, party-oriented beaches where you can dance the night away, or secluded ones where it will be just you and nature.

Table of Contents

Best Beaches in Puerto Vallarta

These beaches are listed from north to south, not in quality. In fact, the beaches get better the further south you go.

1. Boca de Tomates

a baby sea turtle in a bowl that's about to be released into the ocean in mexico

Boca de Tomates is a unique gem in Puerto Vallarta that offers more than just sun and sand. Situated at the northernmost edge of the city, this beach is a weekend favorite among local families, complete with palapa-style eateries that serve up fresh seafood.

What makes this beach special is the Boca de Tomates Turtle Release Camp. I had a magical experience participating in a baby sea turtle release here, one of my favorite wildlife experiences in Puerto Vallarta.

Watching the baby turtles instinctively head towards the ocean during the sunset with the backdrop of the inspiring mountain views was truly a magical experience!

However, it’s essential to note that the beach is not suitable for bathing or other water activities. Due to its proximity to the Ameca River and the Boca Negra Estuary, the presence of crocodiles is a constant, although there are places for safe viewing. While participating in the sea turtle release, our guide pointed them out to us.

This beach is very close to the international airport, which makes it very loud although seeing the planes take off over the mountains is pretty cool!

2. Playa de Oro

Nestled in the famous Hotel Zone of Puerto Vallarta, Playa de Oro is a beach that lives up to its name, which translates to “Gold Beach.”

This popular stretch of golden sand is certified with the prestigious Blue Flag , ensuring clean waters and a well-maintained environment.

It’s a hub for water sports, offering everything from kayaking and windsurfing to whale watching and parasailing. The beach is easily accessible, with three public entry points, and is just 15 minutes from central Puerto Vallarta.

However, it’s not just about the water activities; the beach is lined with resorts and restaurants, making it a perfect destination for those who love to mix relaxation with a bit of adventure. You’ll find many of the top beach hotels in Puerto Vallarta around here.

3. Playa del Holi

digital nomads playing volleyball at playa del holi

Just a 15-minute walk from Playa de Oro, you’ll find Playa del Holi, a beach that’s become a weekend hotspot for digital nomads and expats. Every Saturday, the volleyball in Puerto Vallarta group (VB in PV), heads there to play.

Even if you’re not into volleyball, it’s a great place to socialize and meet other expats living in Puerto Vallarta. I usually just hang out on the side with the dogs!

While the beach does have restaurants, they can be a bit on the pricey side. Instead, pack a cooler with your favorite snacks and beers to enjoy a budget-friendly day under the sun.

Though it can get crowded during holidays, Playa del Holi is generally a great spot to swim, relax, and marvel at the stunning mountain views that serve as the perfect backdrop.

4. Playa El Salado (Marina Beach)

If you’re staying in the Marina Vallarta area and craving some beach time, Playa el Salado is your best bet.

While the Marina doesn’t offer much in terms of beach access, Playa el Salado provides a convenient escape. You can reach this golden-sand beach via a public access point located at the end of Paseo Bocanegra Street.

While it may not be the most glamorous beach in Puerto Vallarta, it serves its purpose well for those staying nearby. The beach offers a variety of water activities like parasailing, windsurfing, and jet skiing, making it a decent spot to spend a day in the sun.

5. Playa Las Glorias

playa las glorias puerto vallarta beaches

Playa Las Glorias will always have a special place in my heart. My first apartment was just a stone’s throw away, so you bet I was there all the time! If you’re lucky enough to be staying in one of those jaw-dropping beachfront hotels in the North Hotel Zone, you’ve got VIP access to this sandy paradise.

Not staying beachside? No worries! There’s a public entry point right by Secrets Resort. Sure, it gets a bit packed with resort-goers, but who can blame them? The sunsets here are Instagram gold, and there are even some shady spots to chill out.

Don’t expect a ton of beachside restaurants on this beach. But hey, it’s the perfect excuse to pack a picnic or get your morning yoga on. And if you’re living in the Versalles area , this is the closest beach to you.

6. Playa Camarones

lora smiling on the beach in puerto vallarta with the ocean in background

Ah, Playa Camarones! This beach, known as “the beach of the shrimps,” is a weekend magnet, especially for digital nomads living in the 5 de Diciembre area. We often find ourselves at Mangos Beach Club, sipping cocktails and soaking up the sun.

One of the most fun things to do here is rent jet skis. We once took one all the way to Los Arcos, and it was epic. They go so fast!

If jet skis aren’t your thing, no worries. This beach is perfect for an easy beach day. Grab your friends, a cooler from OXXO filled with beers, and your go-to playlist.

Don’t have beach gear? No worries, as there are many restaurants here with chairs and umbrellas you can use. From El Solar to Mangos Beach Club, this area has some of the best beach clubs in Puerto Vallarta.

7. Playa de Los Muertos

drone shot of los muertos pier from above. behind it is los muertos beach

If you’re in the mood for a lively beach scene, Playa Los Muertos is your go-to. Located right next to Zona Romantica, this beach is a hub of activity. From renowned beach clubs like Mantamar to an array of water sports like banana boat rides, there’s never a dull moment.

Now, let’s talk logistics. The beach is super accessible, just a short walk from the Malecon. And if you’re looking to escape the crowds, the Los Muertos Pier is your gateway to more secluded beaches via water taxi.

Speaking of crowds, be prepared for a bustling atmosphere. Vendors will frequently approach you with various goods for sale. The beach has a mix of dining options—some hit-or-miss spots and some fantastic restaurants that I’ve highlighted in this guide.

While it may not be the most picturesque beach for a swim, it’s certainly possible. And given its location in the LGBTQ+-friendly Romantic Zone, you’re guaranteed to meet some amazing people from around the globe, all while sipping a fabulous cocktail against the backdrop of the city.

8. Conchas Chinas Beach

four girls swimming in playa conchas chinas

If you’re after a beach experience that feels like a luxurious escape but is still within city limits, Playa Conchas Chinas is your spot. Nestled in a stunning area filled with lavish homes and upscale hotels, this beach is a natural wonder with its striking rock formations that seamlessly blend with the ocean.

Getting here is a breeze. You can either take a scenic walk along the coast from Old Town, or opt for a quick 5-minute Uber ride. I love coming here for its clear waters, making it my go-to beach for swimming near the city.

During a yoga retreat in Amapas, I frequented Conchas Chinas to immerse myself in nature.

While the beach is a bit removed from the hustle and bustle of Puerto Vallarta, it’s absolutely worth the journey. Plus, there are a few dining options available, perfect for a sunset meal. Trust me, the further you venture from the city, the more rewarding the beaches become.

9. Playa Palmares

drone view of the south beaches of puerto vallarta

Just a 15-minute scenic drive from downtown Puerto Vallarta, Playa Palmares is a slice of paradise you won’t want to miss.

This Blue Flag-certified beach is not just stunning but also eco-friendly, meeting high standards for water quality and environmental management.

You can get there easily by Uber or city bus, and the ride offers breathtaking views of the ocean and mountains. I only discovered Playa Palmares in my third year living in Puerto Vallarta. And let me tell you, I was absolutely blown away by its beauty.

The beach was teeming with birds and butterflies, adding to its natural allure. I spent hours swimming in the turquoise waters with friends, wishing I had discovered this piece of paradise sooner!

10. Garza Blanca Beach

lora standing in crystal clear water facing the turquoise ocean at garza blanca beach puerto vallarta

If you’re looking for a beach that’s more laid-back but still offers a slice of paradise, Playa Garza Blanca is where you’ll want to be. This beach is a hit among families and couples, but it’s not your typical party scene. Still, I spent a day here with friends, and we had an absolute blast.

Getting there is a cinch. While it’s too far to walk from town, a quick Uber or taxi ride will get you there in no time. Once you’re there, you’ve got options. Pack your own snacks or indulge in some local treats from vendors who stroll the beach.

But let’s talk about the water—oh, the water! It’s calm, making it perfect for swimming, and the color is just unreal. If you’re into snorkeling, you’re in for a treat. The crystal-clear waters are teeming with vibrant fish and coral.

11. Playa Las Gemelas

lora on gemelas beach in puerto vallarta

Nestled just a few minutes south of Garza Blanca, Playa Las Gemelas is a hidden gem. The beach is actually a pair of small, adjacent beaches separated by a rock wall, giving it its name, which translates to “Twin Beaches.”

The waters here are calm and crystal-clear, making it an ideal spot for swimming and kayaking. One of the beaches is easily accessible, while the other requires a bit of hiking, rewarding you with a more private and exclusive experience.

Since it’s far removed from the crowded areas, you won’t find any vendors or restaurants here, so be sure to pack your own food, drinks, and essentials like sunblock and towels.

I spent a perfect afternoon here with friends, sharing laughs and drinks as we watched a breathtaking sunset.

12. Mismaloya

aerial shot of mismaloya beach in puerto vallarta

If you’re looking to combine natural beauty with a lively atmosphere, Mismaloya Beach is the ideal place to be . Located just a short bus ride from Puerto Vallarta, this beach is a popular spot for both locals and tourists.

What sets Playa Mismaloya apart is its proximity to the Los Arcos Nature Reserve , a must-see for anyone interested in snorkeling or scuba diving. You can easily catch a boat right from the beach to take you to this stunning marine park full of marine life such as sea turtles.

Mismaloya is often buzzing with activity and live music, so this isn’t the place to go if you want quiet. The beach is lined with food vendors and restaurants serving up everything from fresh seafood to classic Mexican fare.

Best beaches near Puerto Vallarta in the south

13. colomitos puerto vallarta.

emerald green sparkling water by golden sand beach colomitos beach

If you thought that a city as touristy as Puerto Vallarta couldn’t have its own private piece of heaven, you were wrong. Playa Colomitos is known for being one of Mexico’s tiniest beaches and also one of the prettiest!

You can get here either hiking along the coast towards Las Animas or by panga, which are little local boats that transport locals and tourists around.

Both the trailhead and boats are found in Boca de Tomatlan, the town that serves as a base for all the beaches south of Puerto Vallarta along Banderas Bay.

The best way to get here is to be adventurous and hike from Boca. It’s not that hard, and the views along the coastline are stunning. After about an hour, you’ll encounter Colomitos which is tucked in a small cove – you won’t believe how beautiful it is once you see the emerald green water here!

The water is calm and serene – it’s the perfect place to pack a picnic and chill out for the day. There aren’t any amenities here, so be prepared when you come and enjoy this little wonder of nature.

14. Las Animas Beach

las animas beaches near puerto vallarta

Playa Las Animas is another beautiful beach south of Puerto Vallarta that you can reach by panga or hiking from Boca.

It’s on the same route as Colomitos, just about an hour further. You’ll see signs along the hiking trails. But unlike Colomitos, it’s packed with amenities making this a popular party beach. At Las Animas, you’ll find restaurants and beach clubs dotted along the coast.

15. Quimixto Beach

quimixto puerto vallarta

Quimixto is another great beach south of Puerto Vallarta. You’ll need to get to Boca de Tomatlán and then take one of the pangas (water taxis) from the pier, which takes about half an hour.

Once you’re in Quimixto , you won’t have much to do but be amazed at the beauty that will surround you. There is a small town where you can get something to eat or drink if you haven’t brought supplies. There’s also a nice waterfall you can hike to from town in about half an hour.

Quimixto is one of my favorite beaches in Puerto Vallarta. On one side, there are beach clubs and restaurants, but on the other, there are secluded places to relax under swaying palm trees. There’s also the option to camp here in front of the ocean!

16. Majahuitas Beach

puerto vallarta beach excursions

If you’re looking for a place to party on the weekends, Playa Majahuitas is the place to go. It’s home to Majahuitas Beach Club , which is my favorite beach club in Puerto Vallarta.

The entrance fee is a bit pricy, usually around 75 USD depending on the event, but they have amazing DJs that play from day to night, and you get most of it back as credit. The food and cocktails are superb!

Majahuitas is by far one of the best beaches in Puerto Vallarta when it comes to spots for Instagram photos . They’ve got so many spaces set up in the beach club for photo ops, as well as a small waterfall.

17. Yelapa Beach

yelapa beach puerto vallarta

Continue south, and you’ll reach Yelapa, one of the most popular day trips and weekend getaways from Puerto Vallarta. While technically, it’s accessible by hiking trails, this is quite the trek. Instead, you can grab a boat from Boca and be here in about an hour.

Yelapa has some of the prettiest waterfalls near Puerto Vallarta and a gorgeous beach with restaurants, beach clubs, and incredible sunsets.

Just make sure to get the last panga back before sunset, or you might have to spend the night! Not necessarily a bad thing; there are many cool accommodation options here, from huts in the jungle to nice hotels.

Here’s everything you need to know about visiting Yelapa from Puerto Vallarta .

Best beaches near Puerto Vallarta in the north

18. punta mita.

surfers in punta mita

Punta Mita is a luxurious peninsula located about an hour’s drive from Puerto Vallarta, widely known as one of the best beaches near Puerto Vallarta for surfing .

It’s also known for its high-end resorts and private beaches, and one of the challenges of Punta Mita is finding public beach access, as many of the beaches are tucked behind private resorts.

However, Litibu Sunsets Restaurant offers a fantastic solution. Not only can you enjoy a meal with a view, but it’s also a gateway to the beach. I’ve also been to parties there with DJs, where we camped on the beach afterward. So much fun!

19. San Pancho Beach

san pancho beach

This beach is not in Jalisco but in Nayarit, the neighboring state to the north. But it’s still only about an hour of driving and will be worth it. San Pancho is a tiny but magical beach town that makes for one of the best day trips from Puerto Vallarta.

To get here, you can rent a car in Puerto Vallart a for the day or grab a bus for $2.50 from Las Glorias.

The atmosphere is very chilled out in San Pancho. The beach is excellent for surfing or swimming when the waves are low. There are also cute shops and excellent restaurants with fresh seafood you don’t want to miss out on!

20. Sayulita Beach

aerial shot of sayulita beach. ocean meeting beach.

Sayulita is just five minutes from San Pancho but has much more of a party atmosphere. It’s becoming one of the most popular destinations in Mexico for surfers and digital nomads, although I’ve heard the WiFi is not great.

Still, if you want a nice place to surf, party the night away, and meet people from all over the world, Sayulita is the place to go.

21. Hidden Beach Puerto Vallarta

hidden beach puerto vallarta

I couldn’t write a post about Puerto Vallarta without mentioning Puerto Vallarta’s most famous beaches. Hidden Beach, sometimes called secret beach, is actually on the Marietas Islands. To get there, you’ll need to join a day tour and make the two-hour boat trip to the islands.

Space on the hidden beach is limited to 116 people per day, so secure your permit with the tour operator in advance. Here’s the guide on everything you need to know about visiting Hidden Beach!

Please be a responsible traveler when visiting the beach! Bring a reusable water bottle, pick up after yourself, and wear only eco-friendly sunscreen that won’t damage the corals. All of these measures are the key to preserving these natural wonders for many years to come.

When planning a trip to Puerto Vallarta, visiting some of the Puerto Vallarta beaches is a must. But with multiple beaches right in town, it’s hard to know what the best beach in Puerto Vallarta to visit is.

After spending a total of fourteen weeks in Puerto Vallarta, heading to the different beaches for sunset, swimming, and even snorkeling, we’re sharing the different Puerto Vallarta beaches , and what each one is best for!

All of the beaches in this post are walkable from Puerto Vallarta. If you’re looking for more day trip style beaches, check out these 15 beaches near Puerto Vallarta .

Arial shot of Los Muertos Beach in Puerto Vallarta.

Before we get into the beaches of Puerto Vallarta… a couple of things to note.

There are not lifeguards frequently placed throughout the beaches. We’ve only seen a couple of them here and there, so swim with caution.

Sun Protection

Don’t forget your sun protection ! The sun is strong here! We saw the UV rays as high as 10 when we were in Puerto Vallarta! Don’t be like me and get skin cancer!

Is It Safe To Swim in Puerto Vallarta?

In short, yes, you can swim at almost all of the beaches in Puerto Vallarta!

Pay attention to the flags (more on that below) to see if the water is actually safe to get in. Most of the beaches have smooth sand and are free of rocks, making them great beaches in Puerto Vallarta to swim at!

A red flag flying on a beach in Puerto Vallarta warning visitors the water is too dangerous to get in.

The Puerto Vallarta Beach Flags

Even though the number of flags is few, there are warning flags along the beaches in Puerto Vallarta. These flags are color-coded with signs that state what the colors mean.

Look for and pay attention to the flags.

There are certainly not as many flags flying as there should / could be — so you really have to look for them .

If it’s red — do NOT go in the water!

This means the water is super dangerous and likely has a rip current or something similar. We were in PV when people got swept out to sea and one of the bodies was never found — the red flags were flying, but honestly, who knows if they saw them because there really aren’t that many of them around.

If it’s purple — do NOT go in the water!

Purple means there’s dangerous flora or fauna in the water. This can be anything from bacteria from the rivers or worse, the sewage from hotels to things like poisonous water snakes.

Remember, just because you’re on a beach vacation doesn’t mean it’s worth getting in the water when the water is dangerous !

Puerto Vallarta Beaches At A Glance

Alright, let’s jump into the good stuff. We’ve personally visited all of the beaches discussed in this post unless otherwise noted. I’ve broken up the post into beaches by the general zone and ended with beaches near Puerto Vallarta that would be more of a day trip adventure!

Have fun finding the perfect beach in Puerto Vallarta for you!

Playa de Oro

  • Playa Flamingos

Playa Los Tules

  • Playa Las Glorias

Playa Tranquila

No name beach.

  • Playa Camerones
  • Rosita Beach

Playa Olas Atlas

  • Los Muertos Beach By The Pier
  • Puerto Vallarta’s Gay Beach

Playa Amapas

Playa conchas chinas, beaches in puerto vallarta from north to south , hotel zone beaches .

  • Location |  20.6463, -105.24208
  • Best For | laying on the beach and beach sports
  • Beach Vibe | adventure sports + resorts

Playa del Oro taken with a drone looking up at the beach with the resorts along the beach.

Playa de Oro is a big open beach space that’s right on the corner of the Puerto Vallarta Marina. This beach is really more for guests who are staying in the all-inclusive resorts in this area, however, it’s big and open to everyone.

When we visited this beach, we noticed not too many people were actually on the beach itself. Instead, it’s a big open sandy beach that’s a bit off the water — and it’s where people who are skydiving in Puerto Vallarta land!

There are pretty big, all-inclusive adults-only hotels at Playa de Oro, and you’ll find some areas that are roped off for the guests of these resorts.

Playa Flamingos / Playa Del Holi

  • Location |  20.6418, -105.23938
  • Best For | crowds but not touristy
  • Beach Vibe | busy with lots of locals and big groups

A sandy beach with people set up and the waves crashing in, taken from a drone, shot top down.

If you’re looking for a day at the beach that’s mixed with groups of locals and options to purchase things like food, beach chairs, and umbrellas without the touristy feel — this is the beach for you.

We loved the feeling at Playa Flamingos. There were cute little rental tents set up for romantic dates and baby showers, beach volleyball and other sports going on, and the energy of the crowd here is perfect.

Sound baths, birthday parties, beach games, and more were all happening at Playa Flamingos. This is definitely the best beach in Puerto Vallarta for non-touristy beach crowds !

READ MORE | 15 Beaches Near Puerto Vallarta

Lots of people were catching fish here, and while there were literally hundreds of people at the beach, it didn’t actually feel crowded at all.

Playa Flamingos would be my preferred beach in Puerto Vallarta when looking for a fun beach outing instead of a quiet beach escape. And shoot, the mountain views from Playa Flamingos, don’t get me started!

It’s worth noting here.. between Playa Flamingos and Playa Los Tules, there are some prestine beaches with literally nobody else around. When we were walking along this section of the beach, there were literally only two other people on the beach! It’s perfect for a quiet beach getaway!

An aerial shot of Playa Flamingos, a beach in Puerto Vallarta right next to hotels and on a corner.

  • Location |  20.63959, -105.23675
  • Best For | people who like to beach and dine
  • Beach Vibe | energetic with restaurants + salespeople

A vacant beach in Puerto Vallarta with couple walking along the shore and tables and chairs in the distance.

This beach is located in a bustling section of the hotel zone . We actually stumbled upon this because on accident our first time in Puerto Vallarta.

With it being right next to all the big hotels in the hotel zone, you definitely have the tourist feel. There are loads of people walking the beach selling things from oysters to braids and fishing tours to bracelets!

To get to this Puerto Vallarta beach, we recommend walking the public access trail to the beach near La Madalena .

Be sure to watch for crocodiles along this path! It’s one of the areas in town where these sometimes dangerous wildlife in Puerto Vallarta exist.

Beaches in Las Glorias / 5 de Diciembre

Playa las glorias .

  • Location |  20.63078, -105.23282
  • Best For | beach days without the crowds
  • Beach Vibe | people working out, beach massages, and hotels lining the beach

Playa Las Glorias in Puerto Vallarta with new mega hotel going in in the background.

Playa Las Glorias is a beach that’s actually pretty skinny. The beach butts right up again a row of hotels and resorts. So most of the people that area hanging out at this beach are people from the accommodation nearby.

With that said, there were also people working out along this beach, jet ski rentals , beach massages , and even weddings going on when we were here!

When we visited this beach in February 2024, there was construction going on on the south part of the beach — so probably avoid that area if you’re looking for a nice beach feel!

The sand at Playa Las Glorias is a bit coarse in some areas, however, that changes as the tides change, so it could be smoother at different times of the year or even different months!

  • Location |  20.62754, -105.23246
  • Best For | beach day without the crowd, but amenities nearby
  • Beach Vibe | small and rocky with construction

Yellow sunset over the ocean in Puerto Vallarta, reflecting off the water.

Playa Tranquila is one of the Puerto Vallarta beaches that have crocodiles nearby . This beach in Puerto Vallarta can be anything but tranquila right now as there is a lot of construction going on with the new buildings being built.

However, if you visit outside of construction timing, you’ll find a quiet beach that is small and oftentimes, more rocky than other beaches in Puerto Vallarta.

With that said, this is the beach right in front of the Sheraton, so you’ll also find the typical beach bungalows taking up much of the beach space here.

LEARN MORE | Dangerous Wildlife in Puerto Vallarta | more than just crocodiles
  • Location | 20.62424, -105.23209
  • Best For | those looking to not get sandy & escape the constant sales
  • Beach Vibe | relaxed beach, no salespeople, and lots of locals

Man fishing from the beach in Puerto Vallarta at sunset.

This beach in Puerto Vallarta is a well-kept secret. Or rather, I suppose maybe it’s just not a popular beach because it’s smooth rocks instead of sand.

Either way, we love this beach !

I found this beach while on a run one day, and was just looking for a new place to explore. I popped down the road across from the big sports complex, and low and behold, found this secret beach in Puerto Vallarta!

It’s always filled with locals . You can drive right up onto the beach . And we’ve seen many people fishing right off the shore and reeling fish in left and right!

As I mentioned above, at this beach you won’t find sand — instead, it’s rocks. But it’s really nice that way in our opinion.

The other thing you won’t find here are the people trying to sell you things left and right. We’ve been left almost completely alone each time we visit here or have a beer at sunset on this beach!

Playa Camerones

  • Location | 20.61912, -105.2324
  • Best For | active beach goers
  • Beach Vibe | rental chairs, shrimp on a stick, oyster shooters, and drinks delivered all up and down the beach

Lots of umbrellas set up on Playa Camerones in Puerto Vallarta on a blue sky day.

As touristy as it is, Playa Camerones is a great beach in Puerto Vallarta. The name literally translates to shrimp beach, and as you may guess, you can buy shrimp here at all hours of the day!

There are many places to rent beach chairs and umbrellas, multiple beach clubs, and a good mix of locals and tourist visiting this beach.

We lived only a few minutes walk from this beach for eight weeks, and always loved coming down to the beach for sunset. Yes, we would always get haggled by salespeople, but once we said no, they would move along.

There is very little places for shade here, but lots of options for renting both beach chairs and umbrellas from multiple people up and down the shore.

At Playa Camerones in Puerto Vallarta you can also expect to see a lot of active people. Many people run along this beach, there are beach volleyball courts here, and lots of people walking their dogs along the water.

This is also one of the more popular beaches (second to Los Muertos Beach below) where people are actually swimming in the water.

Playa Camerones is also a very popular spot to go parasailing (lasting five minutes in total, we’ve timed it multiple times) right off the beach or rent jet skis to drive right off the shore.

Get better prices on your tours, by booking them ahead here .

Beaches Along the Malecon

Rosita beach / playa malecon.

  • Location | 20.61263, -105.23417
  • Best For | sunset and a show
  • Beach Vibe | right along Malecon so busy sounds + lots of “shows”

Drone shot of Rosita Beach in Puerto Vallarta at sunset.

Rosita Beach is the beach area that lines the famous Malecon board walk in Puerto Vallarta.

The waves crash in a really strange way along this shoreline, so we’d not recommend swimming from this beach . In fact, all the times we’ve walked past Rosita Beach, we’ve never seen anyone in the water here.

The beach is a mixture of both sand and rocks, and has a few palm trees throughout, providing shade for beachgoers.

There is a public bathroom on the north end of the beach, you’ll find the famous flying men of Puerto Vallarta here too.

We’ve seen sand art, rock stacking, fire shows, and more along this beach. But as for people actually hanging out on the beach, there’s usually not many, and you don’t have all the sales people walking along Rosita beach either.

READ MORE | 15 Things To Do On Puerto Vallarta’s Malecon
  • Location | 20.60437, -105.23849
  • Best For | playing in sand + quieter sunset viewing
  • Beach Vibe | lots of sand to play in, high off the water

Playa Olas Atlas in Puerto Vallarta with a sea turtle sign warning people of the sea turtles hatching on this beach in Puerto Vallarta.

This beach is the first beach of the Romantic Zone beaches, but it’s also right on the Malecon , so I thought I’d keep it in this section. Playa Olas Atlas is immediately after crossing the bridge along the Malecon.

It’s here you’ll find big waves crashing, and more people just relaxing in the sand instead of actually going in the water.

There are a few restaurants and vendors walking the beach here, but not nearly as much as the neighboring Los Muertos Beach.

Along this stretch of beach in Puerto Vallarta, you’ll find lounge chairs for the resorts nearby and a couple of beachside restaurants where you can eat with your toes in the sand.

With rather dirty water coming in from the river (with a crocodile in it) many people just enjoying the actual beach instead of the ocean at Playa Olas Atlas.

In the summers, Playa Olas Atlas is a nesting area for sea turtles ! Super cool to see them here!

Beaches in the Romantic Zone

Los muertos beach | by the pier .

  • Location |  20.60051, -105.23936
  • Best For | families and those looking to swim
  • Beach Vibe | lots of families here and many activities and vendors

Los Muertos Pier and Beach in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico taken from a drone directly above teh pier.

The Los Muertos Beach by the pier is a completely different beach than it is further south, so I’ve separated the two.

The beach area by Los Muertos Pier is a very popular place for families and the water seems to always be clean and swimmable.

From both the beach and the pier, visitors can do all sorts of water excursions , get water taxis, and literally any and all tourist things you can think of!

This beach is hands down the go to beach for travelers in Puerto Vallarta looking for that iconic beach vacation! It’s full of life and most times we’ve been by, as crowded as it gets!

Along this stretch of Los Muertos Beach, you’ll also find a ton of beachside restaurants, a place you can get a pedicure, and lots of beach view resorts.

Our favorite thing to do at this beach is grab a beer from OXXO and sit along the Malecon boardwalk and people watch / watch the sun set over the Pacific Ocean.

Los Muertos Beach | Puerto Vallarta’s Gay Beach

  • Location | 20.59797, -105.23962
  • Best For | gay travelers
  • Beach Vibe | gay beach clubs and resorts some vendors

Gay beaches in Puerto Vallarta taken from a drone looking at the Gay Beach.

It’s well known here in Puerto Vallarta that the southern part of Los Muertos Beach is a highly populated gay community area . There are two well-known and distinguishable gay hotels, Mantamar Vallarta and Blue Chairs Hotel on this beach stretch.

Just look for the blue umbrellas and you’ll find the gay beach in Puerto Vallarta.

I will say, all the beaches in Puerto Vallarta are accepting of gay people, however, this area is the hot spot and it’s literally known for being Puerto Vallarta’s gay beach.

Just past the gay beach clubs, there is a great beach area that we love. There’s loads of sand, and some shade, and the snorkeling is great along the rocks!

It’s also just far enough away from the main beach areas of PV that you’ll not find as many people haggling you all day long!

  • Location | 20.59495, -105.24108
  • Best For | snorkeling + shade
  • Beach Vibe | quiet beach escape close to town

Aerial shot of crystal clear waters and sandy beach in Puerto Vallarta.

At the end of Los Muertos beach, hiking up and over the stairs, you’ll find Playa Amapas. While we enjoy snorkeling just before going up the stairs, this beach is also great for snorkeling too!

Just be sure to watch the waves and the tide, as there are a lot of big rocks in this area! Once we were there and there was no way I would get in the water with how crazy the ocean was! So, use your best judgement!

Playa Amapas is the perfect beach to pack a day bag and picnic and spend the whole day enjoying the ocean views !

The beach is named after the Amapas trees that surround this little cove, and those trees provide the perfect amount of shade for those looking to escape the sun from time to time!

For sunset, hike back up the stairs to the viewpoint at the top of the rocks!

READ MORE | Our Complete Guide to Playa Amapas | how to get there + safety + what to pack

  • Best For | snorkeling and escaping the crowds
  • Beach Vibe | quiet and calm with lush blue waters

Aerial shot of Conchas Chinas Beach in Puerto Vallarta, a beach with a rocky cove providing great snorkeling.

Conchas Chinas Playa is our favorite beach in Puerto Vallarta. It’s the last beach that’s accessible by foot from downtown Puerto Vallarta.

This beach is known to be a less touristy beach , and it’s truly a hidden gem in Puerto Vallarta.

To get to Playa Conchas Chinas, you can either bus, drive, or walk, but our favorite way is to walk there. It’s about a 1.25 mile walk from Los Muertos Pier , all along the coastline, and it’s a great hike in Puerto Vallarta.

Learn more about how to get to Conchas Chinas Playa and our complete guide to this beach here.

Beaches in Puerto Vallarta Warning

A trip to Puerto Vallarta wouldn’t be complete without spending time at any of the beaches in Puerto Vallarta. We hope this guide to beaches in Puerto Vallarta has been helpful to you.

It’s worth reiterating here.. please, please, please, know your swimming abilities and pay attention to the flags at the beach.

Two people were just washed out to sea because they were swimming when the ocean was too rough. Sadly, only one body was recovered.

So, keep in mind even when you’re on a beach vacation in Puerto Vallarta — the ocean is powerful and dangerous — and do not get in it if it looks swift or the warning flags are flying.

We hope you enjoy your time in Puerto Vallarta! We absolutely love it here! Be sure to check out more of our guides to Puerto Vallarta below! We lived in Puerto Vallarta for 14 weeks, throughout two different trips in two completely different seasons! So we’ve got a few tips to share!

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Description.

Puerto Vallarta was sleepy no more; its transformation into an international resort had begun. Then director John Huston chose the village as the location for his film "Night of the Iguana," starring Richard Burton. Today, the city has its own "Gringo Gulch," a haunt of the rich and famous. Travelers are also drawn by its climate, its excellent shopping - which offers great values on leather goods, jewelry, and handicrafts - and mile after mile of palm-lined beaches.

Points of Interest

  • The Malecon
  • Las Caletas
  • Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe
  • Tequila Hacienda
  • Isla Marietas
  • Dolphin Encounter
  • Outdoor Adventure

More about Puerto Vallarta, Mexico Points of Interest

The city's popular boardwalk by the beach is lined with shops, restaurants and artists selling their wares. Begin your stroll at the Los Milenos sculpture by Mathis Lidice and head southward.

Accessible only by boat, this secluded cove on the southern shores of Banderas Bay is surrounded by lush jungle and features pristine beaches for an exclusive private paradise.

The cathedral features a gilded crown, a replica of one worn by Carlota, empress of Mexico. A 1995 earthquake damaged the crown and sculptor Octavio Gonzales created its replacement.

Discover the fascinating process of tequila making, from its origins in the blue agave cactus to your glass, and sample Puerto Vallarta's finest at Hacienda Doña Engracia.

The tiny town and crescent-shaped beach of the same name is situated in a cove off Banderas Bay, south of Puerto Vallarta. Sleepy and remote, the only way to get there is by boat.

This series of uninhabited islands offers kayaking, snorkeling or scuba diving around the periphery of the islands where you can bird-watch as it is a haven for all matter of winged species.

Get acquainted with new underwater friends at the Dolphin Adventure Center. Kids can kiss the dolphins and meet their curious babies, while adults may indulge in a once-in-a-lifetime belly ride!

Become one with nature as you zipline and rappel through the Mexican jungle, view the countryside by powerful ATV, or go kayaking and snorkeling in the warm waters of Puerto Vallarta.

U.S. News Insider Tip : If you're hoping to book accommodations within walking distance of El Malecón, be selective when choosing a hotel or all-inclusive resort. Stretching approximately 12 city blocks along Bahía de Banderas (Banderas Bay), El Malecón is a great place to stroll any time of day, but especially in the evenings. Along the way, visitors will see everything from sand sculptures and bronze sculptures to the iconic Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe . El Malecón is also home to the open-air Los Arcos Amphitheater, another iconic symbol of Puerto Vallarta that plays host to free performances, featuring live musicians and traditional Mexican dance troupes, just about every night.

Zona Romantica (Romantic Zone) Zona Romantica (Romantic Zone) free

This charming south side neighborhood is like a detached, unpretentious beach village that serves PV's more laid-back and less resort-conscious tourists. It's also the center of the city's thriving gay scene and has a bevy of gay beaches, bars and restaurants lining Olas Atlas. Travelers should keep in mind that this area is also known as Old Vallarta or Old Town.

Most agree that Zona Romantica is a must-see. The area contains a number of the city's best restaurants, excellent cultural opportunities and the most popular beach in the city: Los Muertos Beach. It's also home to a pier built in 2013 that offers seating for pedestrians and illuminates each evening with a kaleidoscope of colors. From the pier, travelers can board water taxis to some of the area's more secluded beaches. Recent travelers said you'll find a bunch of smaller grocery stores, restaurants and cafes away from the beach, as well as fewer peddlers selling souvenirs. Lázaro Cardenas Park (also known as Tile Park) is another popular stop here thanks to the colorful mosaics adorning the benches, columns and planters.

Bucerías Bucerías free

A great place to experience the joys of a resort town without the tourist-palooza that is Puerto Vallarta, the small fishing village of Bucerías is steadily becoming a popular day trip for PV vacationers. If you have the time to spare, take a bus to this beach hideaway up the coastline for an afternoon of fishing or swimming.

Recent visitors recommend spending Thursday evenings (November to April) doing the Bucerías Art Walk, a self-guided tour of more than a dozen galleries and arts boutiques. The Bucerias Bike and Food Tour is also highly rated because it visits several local eateries with a local guide leading the way. Beachside dining at places like Mar y Sol also comes highly recommended. If you're looking for a place off the tourist track, Bucerias is your secluded oasis.

Playa de los Muertos Playa de los Muertos free

The most popular shoreline in Puerto Vallarta, Playa de los Muertos (Deadmen's Beach) in the  Zona Romantica , offers opportunities to Jet Ski, windsurf and even parasail, as well as an assortment of excellent restaurants and bars. Try out some of the land sports as well, such as beach volleyball, which can be equally fun but cheaper than the water sports.

Travelers generally say that Playa de los Muertos is a nice area with plenty of space and a great spot for people-watching. Visitors also note that, unlike elsewhere in the Zona Romantica, beachside peddlers can be particularly aggressive when selling small items to tourists. A simple " no, gracias " should allow you to avoid any haggling. Because of the high concentration of gay-friendly accommodations along the southern shore, Playa de los Muertos is also considered a party haven for PV's LGBTQ travelers. A few travelers warned of the beach's strong current, advising parents with children to take extra precautions when swimming.

Puerto Vallarta Food Tours Puerto Vallarta Food Tours

If you're looking for a break from sunbathing and enjoying umbrella-garnished drinks on the beach, consider signing up for one of the best Puerto Vallarta food tours. While you can always head into town to try fresh local seafood, tacos and an array of Mexican desserts on your own, booking a tour with a company like Vallarta Food Tours , Vallarta Eats Food Tours  or ChocoMuseo can make the experience more festive and fun while paving the way to even more adventurous culinary options.

All foodie tours in Puerto Vallarta are led by savvy locals eager to share their expertise with curious visitors, and you may be surprised at the delicacies you can try. For example, Vallarta Food Tours offers downtown PV tasting tours that let you nosh on regional dishes like tacos, birria (meat stew), seafood and mole, but they also offer specialized tours geared to vegans or seafood lovers. There are also spirit-focused tours that allow participants to sample several different types of local tequila, mezcal or craft beer.

Puerto Vallarta Whale Watching Tours Puerto Vallarta Whale Watching Tours

U.S. News Insider Tip : Book a tour for one of the first days of your trip. Whale-watching tours in PV frequently get canceled due to choppy seas or lack of local whales. Booking early in your vacation gives you a chance to try another day if your first tour doesn't pan out.– Holly D. Johnson

Spotting a humpback whale as it crests the surface of the ocean is an awe-inspiring sight, and Puerto Vallarta is one of the best places to do just that. Whale watching season runs from early December through March, when humpback whales congregate in the sheltered, warm waters of Puerto Vallarta's Banderas Bay to have their babies. The peak of whale watching season is between January and February. And although you can bring your binoculars and look for whales from the shore – try the Malecón – your best chance for seeing them up close is aboard a tour operator's boat.

puerto vallarta beach excursions

Yelapa Yelapa

For a break from the tourist crowds of Puerto Vallarta, head about 20 miles south to Yelapa. Considered by travel experts to be one of Mexico's few "undiscovered" beach towns, Yelapa is only reachable by boat, which is part of the reason why it sees relatively fewer travelers than other popular areas along Bahía de Banderas.

Many travelers come to Yelapa for its unspoiled beach, but if you're looking for a little more adventure, you won't be disappointed. There's a waterfall not too far from town that you can reach via a paved walking path. Recent visitors suggested swimming in the pool beneath the waterfall, praising the clean, refreshing waters. Because of the paved path and short hike, many said it was suitable for children. However, a few visitors were disappointed with the unimpressive size of the falls.

Playa Palmares Playa Palmares free

U.S. News Insider Tip : If you don't want to navigate the bus routes in Puerto Vallarta, consider downloading the Uber app before your trip. You can easily order an Uber from nearly anywhere in and outside the city for convenience, and for less than you would pay for a taxi. – Holly D. Johnson

This beach is beloved by locals and visitors alike for its clean sand and clear water. Situated about 3 miles south of the Romantic Zone , Playa Palmares is Blue Flag certified, meaning it offers a high standard of cleanliness, safety, water quality and accessibility.

Playa Las Animas Playa Las Animas free

This beautiful beach just south of Puerto Vallarta makes for a lovely day trip, according to past visitors. Best accessed via water taxi, Playa Las Animas offers a stunning shoreline, calm waters and restaurants dishing out tasty food. Plus, recent visitors report that this stretch of sand is less crowded than other popular beaches like Playa de los Muertos (as long as you arrive in the morning).

When you're not sunbathing or enjoying a tropical drink, you can also rent a variety of water sports equipment, including kayaks, or sign up for a parasailing adventure or banana boat ride with one of the outfitters headquartered at the beach. This beach is also home to the Las Animas Beach Adventure Park, which offers zip lining, canopy tours and other adventure activities just steps from the ocean.

puerto vallarta beach excursions

Vallarta Botanical Gardens Vallarta Botanical Gardens

To explore beyond Puerto Vallarta, you might want to try the popular Jardín Botánico Vallarta (Vallarta Botanical Gardens). The gardens feature an assortment of wildflowers, including orchids, and insect life that provides a relaxing and romantic getaway from the day-to-day hustle of Vallarta's downtown.

Some travelers expected to spend one or two hours walking around the gardens, but ended up staying the entire day since along with enjoying the magnificent plant life, you can also boulder the jungle's rocks and swim a section of the river. Some reviewers only recommend these activities for fit travelers. Also, be sure to buy a meal or, at the very least, a drink at the on-site restaurant, which comes highly recommended by both travelers and experts. If you plan to hike, you'll want to bring insect repellent (it's also available to purchase on-site) and consider wearing long sleeves and pants.

Los Arcos National Marine Park Los Arcos National Marine Park

Los Arcos National Marine Park is an iconic natural area that sits just 20 minutes south of the main square in downtown Puerto Vallarta. This park is protected from agricultural and developments and new construction, so it's become a haven for a range of bird species as well as sea life, including tropical fish.

Visitors here can take advantage of a range of adventure activities in and out of the water, including diving, swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, snorkeling and more. There are also guided tours you can book that include transportation and entry into the marine park, some of which include Jet Ski rides or snorkeling. Tickets for snorkeling tours start at about $50; Jet Ski tours start at about $145 per person.

puerto vallarta beach excursions

Mirador de La Cruz Mirador de La Cruz free

Mirador de La Cruz is a lookout that offers spectacular views of the city of Puerto Vallarta and the Bay of Banderas. While frequently referred to as a "hike," visitors can get to this lookout with a walk uphill and a set of stairs. There is also a funicular that travelers can ride when it's working, but you may not want to plan on using it since it is often out of service (according to recent travelers). Either way, Mirador de La Cruz is popular among travelers in search of incredible views of the sunrise or the city's overwater sunsets, as well as those who want to stay active during their PV vacation.

Travelers say the trek to the lookout is well worth the time and effort, but that people in poor shape may find the uphill climb and stairs fairly strenuous. They also recommend bringing water, and note that there are restrooms you can use at the top (for a fee), so make sure to bring cash.

puerto vallarta beach excursions

Playa las Gemelas Playa las Gemelas free

Playa las Gemelas is a small shoreline located amid condo and beach rentals. Located about 10 miles south of central Puerto Vallarta, its cerulean waves and sandy shore are a nice place to break away from some of PV's more crowded beaches. Still, because Playa las Gemelas is relatively small, it can feel quite congested, especially on the weekends. To avoid the crowds, travelers should visit during the week and arrive in the morning to stake their spot in the sand. They should also pack their own supplies – drinks, snacks, sunscreen and towels – since there are very few vendors or shops nearby.

With its clear waters and sandy bottom, recent travelers liken Playa las Gemelas to a big swimming pool. They also say taking a cab or an Uber is the easiest way to reach the beach. Though the lack of vendors means you'll have to pack all your own supplies, you may find it more peaceful thanks to the lack of pushy vendors. However, keep in mind that there are no restroom facilities here, and visitors can’t access any of the amenities within the condo towers along the shore.

Las Caletas Beach Las Caletas Beach

Las Caletas is another beach in Puerto Vallarta that's away from the more touristy beaches found in and around downtown. While the beach itself is located about 20 minutes south of PV geographically, you can only get here via a guided boat tour booked through Vallarta Adventures , who controls access to the dock and private beach. The beach itself is known for its powder-white sands, clear waters and hammocks strewn throughout. Visitors who book this tour can enjoy activities like paddleboarding and kayaking, and they can also arrange encounters with monkeys and parrots.

Note that the beach tour itself is rather pricey at around $159 per adult and about $115 per child ages 4 to 11, although prices may be lower if you purchase your ticket online. However, the experience includes a gourmet lunch and open bar, along with the use of kayaking and snorkeling equipment, access to a Teen Adventure Cave and Kid's Adventure Park and more. The tour itself also has excellent reviews, with travelers raving about how much fun they had and the quality of the food and drink. However, some complained that their time there was too short and they wished they could have stayed longer for the cost (the experience lasts about seven hours in total).

Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe free

The silhouette of this church in downtown PV is one of the most defining images of the resort town and its chiming church bells are one of the most recognizable sounds. During the Feast of Guadalupe, held every year from Dec. 1 to Dec. 12, the church is a hub of activity. During the annual festival, there is plenty of music, dancing and street processionals.

Recent visitors suggest pausing during a Malecón stroll to admire the church's Renaissance-style tower. Others recommended stopping inside to see the gorgeous interior or attending Mass (English services are held Saturdays at 5 p.m. – a bilingual service is held every Sunday at 10 a.m.).

puerto vallarta beach excursions

Islas Marietas and Hidden Beach Islas Marietas and Hidden Beach

The Marietas Islands are a collection of small, uninhabited islands off the coast of Riviera Nayarit. Punta Mita is the closest departure point for reaching the islands, but many Puerto Vallarta vacationers add the Marietas Islands to their itineraries given its close proximity (about an hour’s drive north). The islands are known for their incredible beaches, flora and fauna, and marine life, including sea turtles, tropical fish, dolphins and manta rays. However, the islands' "Hidden Beach" is what really attracts tourists thanks to its Instagram-worthy views and location that's tucked within the jungle on a remote island. When you search for photos of Hidden Beach, you can clearly see that it's completely surrounded by land. The water is only accessible during low tide as well, and you can only get there by snorkeling with a mask (but no flippers) when the tide is low. The best way to reach this natural wonder is via an organized boat tour .

Vallarta Adventures is a top-rated company that offers Hidden Beach guided tours as well as a full-day Marietas Islands Eco Discovery tour that goes to other islands, but not Hidden Beach. However, it's worth noting that some past visitors to Hidden Beach say they didn't get enough time on the beach itself (visits are limited to 15 to 20 minutes due to federal regulations). Others said the swim from the boat to the beach, which requires participants to swim beneath a rock arch, is treacherous due to strong currents, and may not be suited to those who aren’t capable swimmers. For many, spotting whales and other wildlife during the boat ride is the highlight.

Rhythms of the Night by Vallarta Adventures Rhythms of the Night by Vallarta Adventures

Rhythms of the Night is a five-hour dinner show that is bookable through Vallarta Adventures. The show is advertised as a "feast for the senses" that begins with a sunset cruise from Puerto Vallarta to Las Caletas , where the dinner and show take place.

A candle-lit buffet meal commences once you arrive at the outdoor dining area, during which a range of singers, dancers and other performers entertain you with songs, fire dancing, acrobatics and more. Past travelers said that, while long, the Rhythms of the Night experience was worth it thanks to the high-quality dining and entertainment, which some compared to Cirque du Soleil. However, some travelers complained that part of the show took place before dinner, which caught them off guard and left them hungry until the formal meal began.

puerto vallarta beach excursions

Isla Río Cuale Isla Río Cuale free

Isla Río Cuale is a mystery to many first-time Puerto Vallarta travelers. The fact that it's often difficult to find only adds to the enigma. In fact, Isla Río Cuale is almost in the heart of the city and is actually an island set upon an inlet of the Banderas Bay. To see the island, simply walk south from El Malecón until you reach a bridge that spans the river, and you'll discover the island, which is home to market stalls selling local wares.

Some visitors advised that there are the same trinkets on sale at Isla Rio Cuale as there are elsewhere in Puerto Vallarta, but they tend to be more expensive. Still, they admit that the locale has a great, car-free ambiance and is worth at least one visit during your time in PV. Isla Río Cuale is accessible free of charge.

Duration 6 hrs

Las Caletas was once the private home of the famous film director John Huston, who considered it one of the most beautiful places in the world. Today, it’s an exclusive tropical beach hideaway where you can enjoy an extraordinary day of sun, fun, and adventure. This lovely beach was named by Trip Advisor as one of the top 4 secluded beaches in the World for 2012. Only accessible by sea, this secluded nature preserve stands out against a steep, jungle-clad backdrop of tropical forest in an isolated cove on the southern shores of Banderas Bay. As you cruise towards this tropical paradise aboard a first-class catamaran, you'll enjoy the most fantastic coastal scenery that Puerto Vallarta has to offer.

Upon arrival at Las Caletas, you can choose between pure relaxation or gentle exploration in the unspoiled natural setting of this tropical hideaway. If relaxing is on your personal agenda, you can kick-back on the beach, relax in the shade on a comfortable hammock, or indulge in a therapeutic body massage or facial at the hilltop Spa (additional charge). As you relax and unwind, the gentle lapping of the surf on the private golden beach beckons you to take a closer look at the calm, clear waters of this isolated cove.

Throughout the day, bilingual eco-guides offer snorkeling and kayaking tours giving everyone a chance to explore in a fun and relaxed way. On land, you can take an Alambre cooking lesson (only available on early departures), discover the prolific flora and bird life on a free guided nature walk through the jungle, orchid gardens and interactive parrot center. For the youngest explorers (4-11) there is the kid’s adventure camp with zip lines, a climbing wall, animal encounters and an exciting donkey ride. For the teenagers and young adventurers the Teen Adventure Cove is waiting for them, Feel the exhilaration of free flight... free falling... and swinging out from extreme heights. Whale Watching Safari

Duration 3 1/2 hrs

Humpback Whales are by far the most expressive and captivating of all the large marine mammals which inhabit Pacific waters. Banderas Bay has one of the largest concentrations of these magnificent animals and it is here, in these protected waters that they come to mate and breed during winter months. Often they can be seen breeching, performing peduncle slaps and tail slaps that your expert guide will explain to you. This specialized excursion is designed to capture the magical moment when you encounter wild dolphins and majestic humpback whales.

The essence of this tour is to find the wildlife and enjoy those precious moments when you can sit peacefully and watch the whales and dolphins play, breach, eat, or just hang out. There is no such thing as a "typical day" on this adventure tour. Of course, you’ll have the chance to see the majesty of Banderas Bay and the abundance of marine life that lives here, as well as enjoy some light snacks and drinks, but often it is the "wild ones" (the whales and dolphins) who are in charge of the daily itinerary. We cannot always predict where they are, so we will let them guide us along their preferred route of the day.

Dolphin Encounter

Duration 3 hrs

Take a short drive to the Dolphin Center at the Nuevo Vallarta Marina. After a brief presentation, head down the dock to a 14,500-square-foot holding pen and as you stand waist-deep in the water, you’ll be introduced to the beautiful Pacific bottlenose dolphin in a hands-on, up-close encounter for approximately 15 minutes. They are as curious about you as you are about them.

Take full advantage of this unique opportunity to pet them gently and you’ll even receive a dolphin kiss. During your encounter you’ll also learn ways to ensure their preservation and foster the well-being of these amazing creatures. After your activity with the dolphins, enjoy a complimentary lunch at the dolphin marina and free time to purchase souvenirs or photos to remind you and your family of this incredible experience.
