One day trip to Lonavla from Pune

Last year me and my husband went to Pune as my husband has some official work over there. For weekend we were planning to visit some nearby places. We looked for the best possible options, which we can visit in a day trip that is how we decided to go to Lonavla.

Lonavla is a hill station around 65 km from Pune, which is far more beautiful and enchanting than I have imagined it to be. After doing some search about itinerary we decided to travel by local train which run from Pune junction to Lonavla railway station. It is the cheapest that is just 15 rs per person and at the same time comfortable way of transportation from Pune to Lonavla.

We went to Pune railway station bought tickets for Lonavla and boarded the train around 8 am and reached Lonavla around 9:30 am. This local train runs on frequent basis from Pune to Lonavla starting from early morning till late evening so you can take any according to your time schedule.

We deboarded the train and headed towards the exit gate. Once we came outside the station, there we found some local tourist guides who were offering one day tour services for sightseeing in Lonavla and Khandala by taxicab. After discussing with them about the rates and itineraries we hired a taxicab for 1200 rs which was for a full day trip covering five main points Khandala, Kune falls, Lion's point, Bhushi Dam and Lonavla Lake.

First of all we went to Khandala which is at a distance of 10 km from lonavla railway station. Khandala is famous for its rock formations of different shapes.

Once we reached there and get down from our cab, there is a stunning view of the beautiful landscape in front of us. After enjoying some time by looking and appreciating all the scenic beauty around us and taking some photographs for memories we moved towards our next destination, Kune falls.

Kune Falls is located centrally within Lonvala and Khandala valley is a three tired waterfalls with a total height of two hundred meters . The waterfall is the 14th highest waterfall in India.

The place is surrounded by lush green vegetation and provides a great visual experience. We remain awestruck for a moment by seeing such a huge waterfall flowing gracefully. The time to visit the waterfall is from 8 am to 6 pm. After spending some time we moved towards our next stop, which was Lion's point.

Lion’s Point - Lonavala

Lion's point is that point which offers a great view of the valley below.

As we visited Lion's point during monsoon, it was mostly covered with fog, hence obstructing the view. But that has its own charm. The weather was most awesome at this place. It is surrounded by clouds all the time, you can feel like you are on the clouds. There were some fast food stalls also, so with Maggie, pakoras and tea one can enjoy this excellent view as we did. Then we moved to forward to Bhushi Dam.

Bhushi Dam is a dam on the Indrayani River in Lonvala. Tourists are usually allowed to visit the dam from 9 am up to 3 pm and due to safety reasons are prohibited from entering the dam and the surrounding areas after 5 pm.

Our cab driver has already informed us about the timings so we reached before 3 pm. We enjoyed the whole time till 5 pm in the water as we both love to play with water. After coming outside from dam, we went to a restaurant where changing facility was also available and changed our wet clothes then have some food as we were also hungry by then. Then we moved forward to Lonavla lake which is on the way back to Lonavla railway station.

Lonavala Lake

Lonvla Lake is located on the out-skirts of Lonavla. The whole view of the lake was very beautiful and soothing for eyes, but we were not able to spend much time there as we had to rush back to the station.

On our way back we also bought some chikki as it is one of the many things for which Lonvala is famous for. So try not to forget buying lonvla ki chikki for your family.

Once we reached the station we boarded the train back to Pune, thus it was the end of our beautiful and most memorable journey. And in future whenever I will visit Pune I will surely visit Lonvla again and again.

Itinerary of Lonavala Trip

Rajmachi Garden :

Rajmachi is a small village situated in the Sahyadri mountain of Maharashtra. Rajmachi is famous for the historical fortress which has two fortified peaks – Shrivardhan and Manaranjan forts, located near two famous hills of Lonavala and Khandala. At the base of the fort is the village Udhewadi which is another name for Rajmachi. The fort of Rajmachi is famous among trekkers and adventure enthusiasts. If you want to experience a full-fledged trek, you can start from the Kondhane caves side which will take 3-4 hours of climbing, but otherwise you can drive right upto Udhewadi village (from the Lonavala side) and then trek for hardly 20-25 minutes to the top of the fort. The simple and clearly marked trail on both the paths make Rajmachi a very popular beginner’s trek.

Khandala Lake:

Khandala is a popular hill station in Maharashtra, perched on the foothills of Sahyadri in Western Ghats. Khandala provides for a perfect weekend respite for the Mumbai population, with its scenic valleys, grassy hills, serene lakes and misty waterfalls. It is one of the twin hill stations – Lonavala and Khandala. Everyone looking for beautiful nature, pleasant weather and the feeling of mist in the air. The natural beauty of Khandala blooms to its zenith and reveals a magical charm during the monsoons. Its meandering waterfalls and glittering lakes attributes to the majestic look an imposing ambience.

Monkey Point :

The Monkey Point is located in the state of Maharashtra. This unique destination overlooks beautiful scenery of the Western Ghats and its intimidating mountains and deep gorges. Tigers point :

Tiger’s point is located around 8 km away from Lonavala and is a major tourist attraction of this place. It is a cliff top with a sheer drop of over 650 m, offering a comprehensive view of the hills and the Western Ghats. It is famous for the stunning sunrise and sunset view. Tiger’s Leap is an unusual name given to this place due to the resemblance of the shape with that of a tiger leaping into the valley. This point, which provides an interesting view of the valley below, is just a short distance away from INS Shivaji. The exhilarating views should, however, be enjoyed from a safe spot rather than from the top of the cliff which is precarious. The echo point on Tiger’s Leap is another major attraction

Lonavala Lake :

Lonavala Lake is located on the outskirts of Lonavala and is sourced by the Indrayani River. The lake fills up during the monsoons and dries up during the winter leading it to be popularly known as the monsoon lake. It is a popular picnic spot offering activities like bird watching, swimming, and angling.

Bhushi Dam :

Bhushi Dam is a masonry dam on the Indrayani River in Lonavala, Maharashtra. It is a popular tourist attraction which is best visited during the monsoons when the water in the dam overflows and creates a sort of waterfall. Even though swimming is prohibited in the dam due to the inconsistent flow of the water, one can always enjoy on the steps. The overflowing water over the steps of Bhushi Dam and then through the rocky terrain make this place a hit among the people of nearby areas who throng in large numbers on weekends during monsoons. It tends to get so crowded that many individuals find it hard even to get a decent standing spot.

Karla Caves :

Karla Caves are ancient Buddhist rock-cut caves and a famous tourist attraction located near Lonavala. Also known as Karli Caves, Karla Cells, it is one of the oldest Buddhist cave shrines in India. These caves houses one of the largest Chaityas (prayer hall with a stupa) in India. Karla Caves is mainly known for the Ekvira Temple located inside. Karla Caves house a humongous 15 – meter pillar along with a temple dedicated to Goddess Ekveera. It also houses a Buddhist monastery which is believed to have been built there around 2nd century BC. One can spot a major ancient trade route near the caves running towards east from the Arabian Sea into the Deccan. One has to climb almost 150 stairs to reach the cave.

Ekvira Devi Temple :

Situated near the Karla Caves in Lonavala, Ekvira Devi Temple or Ekvira Aai Temple is a Hindu temple especially revered by fisherfolk popularly called as Koli people. The shrine is located atop the Karla Caves and can be reached by alighting about 200 steps. Legend has it that the temple was constructed by the Pandavas during their exile.

Bhaja Caves :

The Bhaja caves are a group of 22 rock-cut Buddhist caves, located near Pune. Visited mostly along with the Karla Caves, these caves are believed to have existed since 2nd century BC. Travel back in time on this trip to ancient Indian rock-cut caves with the best rock-cut architecture of all times. The ancient caves are protected as Monument of National Importance by the Archaeological Survey of India.

The Bhaja Caves houses a group of 14 majestic stupas which are the heirloom of the resident monks who died at Bhaja. Five of these stupas can be seen outside the ancient cave while nine are outside displaying an inscription with the name of three monks – Ampinika, Dhammagiri and Sanghdina. These stupas have been sculpted very intricately showing the name of the monks along with their titles.

Lohagad Fort :

Situated at the height of 3400 feet, Lohagad Fort is a UNESCO world heritage site and formidable fort about 52 kilometers away from Pune. Perched atop an impressive hill near Malavali, this destination is the perfect amalgam of ancient architecture and natural beauty. Lohagad Fort was built in the 18th century and is an ideal destination for trekking and nature lovers, especially from Pune and Mumbai. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj used to keep his treasury in this fort.

The trek to the fort is an easy one and perfect for the first-timers, making it a favorite haunt of hiking enthusiasts. In addition to its thrilling trek route, Lohagad Fort in itself is a massive structure that was once under the control of the mighty Maratha Empire and is connected to its twin Visapur Fort as well. Until a few years back, the base of the fort was quite far from the last point connected via road, but now a proper road has been built to the base of the fort, due to which a lot of people visit Lohagad during monsoon weekends, making it quite crowded. Narayani Dham Temple

Located in Dhankawadi Lonavala, is dedicated to Ma Narayani. Built in 2002, the shrine is constructed in white marbles and is a popular tourist spot of the city. The magnanimous four storied temple also houses idols of Ganpathi, Hanuman and several other deities which are decked up with dazzling jewels and in beautiful apparels.
