About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and France. You are not required to obtain a visa to enter any country visited for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally , you should contact a consulate or embassy of the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, and France to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please Note: Longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Cruise Regulations – International maritime security guidelines require that your passport information be provided to us prior to your embarkation. You need to provide this information to us as soon as you book your cruise or boarding may be denied. Once you board the riverboat, your passport will be held by the purser temporarily to make copies.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Your riverboat is registered in Basel, Switzerland. Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour. Please refer to the Tauck Travel Protection Product section above for details on the coverage we can offer you.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S. , no vaccinations are currently required for travel to the Netherlands, Germany, France or Switzerland. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country , please contact an embassy or consulate of the Netherlands, Germany, France and  Switzerland to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for you to visit.

While this tour is very relaxing and the pace leisurely, to enjoy all the tour has to offer, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. There is a moderate to significant amount of walking during our excursions, often along cobblestone streets, and at many sites there are multiple stairs or steps; for the most part, however, the amount of walking you do is at your discretion.

Your riverboat has four decks: Sun, Diamond, Ruby and Emerald. The elevator runs between the Diamond Deck and Emerald Deck; there is not elevator access to the Sun Deck. There is no chair lift between any of the decks. Check your electronic personal documents for information pertaining to your specific riverboat.

Because you will be cruising on a river and not on the open sea, you are never far from land and, therefore, there is no doctor onboard the riverboat. In case of emergency, we can easily dock the boat and call for an ambulance or medical assistance.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.

Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate service animals on any river cruise for medical and legal reasons.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

On board the riverboat, smoking is permitted in a limited area of the Sun deck. Smoking (including e-Cigarettes) is not permitted in any cabin, the restaurant, the lounge or any other interior space.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov , by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is flexible and allows for layering. Casual, cotton clothing is recommended. A light jacket or sweater for the sun deck is also recommended.  Pack comfortable yet sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in, as many of the sites visited were built centuries ago and have uneven surfaces, some steep inclines and many steps.

During evenings aboard the riverboat, dress is resort casual.  Items such as slacks and collared shirts are appropriate for men.  For women, slacks, a dress or a skirt and blouse are suitable.  For dinner and throughout the evening, guests should refrain from wearing shorts, t-shirts, flip-flops or sneakers. Your journey also includes one or two special occasion dinners, where a sport coat and tie for gentlemen and a dress/pantsuit for ladies are suggested.  (Your Tauck Director will advise you prior to those evenings.)

Bathrobes, slippers and hairdryers are provided in each cabin.

Valet laundry service is available on the riverboat for a fee. There is no valet dry cleaning available on the riverboat. Ironing facilities are available by request to the front desk. Category 7 suites feature their own irons and ironing boards.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed. No medications are sold on board the riverboat.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your cruise:

  • Flat, rubber-soled walking shoes for onboard the ship
  • Comfortable yet sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Travel alarm clock/ cell phone with alarm functions (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your ship cabin while traveling

You will also explore the Ijsselmeer, the inland lagoon created by the damming of the Zuider Zee in the 1930’s and discover the series of beautiful villages along its shore which have made their living from the sea for centuries. It was from here during the 16th century Golden Age, that the Dutch roamed the world in search of the spices, silks and luxury goods which Europe’s aristocracy craved and today they are little changed since this time. Blend this with Amsterdam, one of Europe’s most vibrant and fascinating cities and a wonderful few days are in store. This river cruise is the perfect way the see the wonders of the Netherlands for travelers who love horticulture, history and old harbour towns.

EMBARK IN AMSTERDAM

Embark the ship in Amsterdam, moored near the city centre and railway station. The friendly crew welcomes you on board, helping you settle into your spacious and exquisitely furnished accommodation – you’ll feel immediately at home.

Route Map

Overnight the ship has gently steered a course north. As dawn breaks, you’re greeted by views of Enkhuizen, a picturesque port nestling at the edge of the former Zuiderzee. It is also home to the Zuiderzee Museum, which we will experience on our visit this morning. Found in the historic center of Enkhuizen, it superbly recreates the 19th-century heritage of Holland’s inland bay and combines interesting exhibits with demonstrations of the artisan skills of yesteryear, such as sailmaking, fish curing and blacksmithing. The open-air museum is particularly captivating, as the era is brought to life with a charming village atmosphere, where the likes of bakers, shopkeepers and smokehouse workers don traditional clothing and serve you their wares, just as they would have done all those years ago.

During the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th-century, the Netherlands dominated world maritime trade, becoming fabulously prosperous. Enkhuizen, as one of the country’s principal ports specializing in trade in the East Indies, flourished. Merchants keen to display their wealth created this town of gabled houses, narrow streets, bridges and waterways.

It’s a delight to explore, taking in the atmosphere of its little streets and jumble of sailing boats in the harbor. After a delicious lunch on board, we cruise along the Markermeer, the southwestern part of the IJsselmeer, the great freshwater lake created when the Zuiderzee was separated from the North Sea by a series of dams and dykes built during the 1920 and ’30s. This mammoth engineering achievement now protects low-lying areas from flooding and has allowed the reclamation of 626 square miles of fertile land. Before long, thoughts turn to tonight’s à la carte dinner, served with panache by the restaurant staff, after which why not unwind with a digestif at the bar to the soothing sound of the ship’s pianist.

Enkhuizen, the Netherlands

ROTTERDAM & KINDERDIJK

Wake up in historic Rotterdam, the Netherlands’ second-largest metropolis, situated where the Rhine flows into the North Sea. This morning we embark on a guided tour of this captivating city, from the old harbor to the modern architecture, passing by the Witte Huis, Europe’s first skyscraper, built in the Art Nouveau style.

Known as the ‘Gateway to Europe’, it is the largest European cargo port and has been a conduit for trade since the 14th century. Unsurprisingly, its logistical significance made it a target for bombing during the Second World War and its old town was destroyed, with only the Church of Saint Lawrence left standing. During the following decades Rotterdam was reconstructed with typical Dutch optimism and engineering expertise and now boasts an abundance of innovative and imaginative architecture.

Other highlights of Rotterdam include Europe’s largest swing bridge, the Erasmus Bridge, arched Markthal (market hall) and Cube Houses. The Erasmus Bridge is a cable-stayed and bascule construction in the heart of Rotterdam, which is aptly dubbed ‘the Swan’ because of its striking structure. Whilst the vibrant yellow Cube Houses, known locally as Kubuswoningen, are another architectural masterpiece. Built on stilts and tilted at bizarre angles, they were designed by Dutch architect Piet Blom in the 1970s and remain an iconic part of the city to this day.

There are also excellent museums, such as the vast Boijmans Van Beuningen, which houses a world-class collection of works by old and modern masters, from Rembrandt to Van Gogh to Dalí, and some rare and beautiful glassware.

During lunch on board you can enjoy a kaleidoscope of views through the restaurant’s panoramic windows as we leave Rotterdam’s skyline behind. A significant part of the Netherlands lies up to 22 feet below sea level, but an intricate network of dykes and polders, the Netherland’s unique drainage systems, has kept the seawater at bay and allowed land reclamation.

At the very heart of this fascinating reclaimed region is Kinderdijk, our next port of call. Here, you can witness a truly iconic polder scene – a series of 19 authentic windmills lining the canal banks, set against a starkly beautiful backdrop of pancake-flat marshland. Windmills are symbolic of Dutch history and the never-ending battle with the sea, and visiting these beautifully preserved structures is like stepping back in time. Later we return to the cruise ship, where the chef has prepared a sumptuous dinner.

Rotterdam city at night, the Netherlands

KEUKENHOF & AMSTERDAM

A long spring season and the polders’ well-drained soil create the perfect environment for growing the Netherlands’ world-famous tulips, first imported into the country from the Ottoman Empire in the late 16th century. This morning we drive through the scenic bulb fields to Keukenhof, the world’s largest flower garden, covering nearly 80 acres. Nothing prepares you for the dazzling carpet of colors created by the seven million tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and other blooms arranged in rows, swirls and every other imaginable shape. The art of flower planting reaches breathtaking heights in Keukenhof’s themed areas, and wandering among this dramatic pageant of hues set in a landscape of lakes, trees, pavilions and water features is magical – and provides gardeners with a wealth of inspiration to take home!

We return to Amsterdam to explore this beautiful city on a classic glass-topped canal cruiser. A network of 165 canals built in rings during the 17th century defines life in its center, and our ‘water’s-eye view’ is the best way to absorb Amsterdam’s history. Relax and watch this unique cityscape unfold as our guide explains the many intriguing aspects of life here. You’ll see moored houseboats, quirky bridges, cobbled streets lined with tall, narrow merchants’ houses, gabled civic buildings and homes of famous former residents such as Rembrandt, the greatest Dutch Golden Age artist, and Anne Frank, whose diaries tell a poignant tale of life under the Nazis.

Amsterdam is the ideal walking city and we remain moored dockside so you can explore its characterful streets at your leisure. Exceptional art is always close by, from small galleries to the world-class Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, both holding huge collections. You might choose to discover the interior of Anne Frank’s house, rummage through the Waterlooplein flea market or relax at a café sipping a rich Dutch coffee and watching the locals trundle over cobbles along the canals on their high-handlebar bicycles. Wrapping up a memorable day is the lavish Captain’s Dinner in the ship’s restaurant, as evening falls and the lights of this unforgettable city sparkle in the night.

Bulbfields at Keukenhof Gardens

We'll say goodbye to our fellow explorers today and disembark our first-class ship to explore more of the Netherlands. Our first visit is to Haarlem, a charming, historic city at the heart of the Netherlands' tulip-growing region. With famous museums, stores, restaurants and a nearby beach, being bored here is simply not an option.

Haarlem is famous for art as the home to renowned Dutch Golden Age painters, including Frans Hals and Jacob Van Ruisdael, whose work now hang in the city's Frans Hals Museum. There are more than ten museums in the city's museum district, offering exhibits on everything from scientific treasures to contemporary art. And towering above the skyline is the medieval Gothic church, known simply as Grote Kerk, or big church. Its striking 246-foot spire rises higher than any other building in the city, but it's best known for the famous Müller organ, a giant gilded instrument designed by the renowned Amsterdam organ builder Christian Müller. Here we'll enjoy a guided walking tour of Haarlem's highlights before free time for lunch in one of the city's many restaurants.

After lunch, taste the flavours of Haarlem with one of the Netherlands' most famous exports - beer. Enter a beer-lovers heaven with a visit to a charming brewery. Here we’ll sample locally brewed craft beers so good you’ll want to take home bottles for all your friends – don’t worry, there'll be lots of delicious snacks on hand to help soak up the beer.

In the afternoon, we return to Amsterdam and check into our centrally located four-star hotel, where we stay for three nights. Spend the evening settling in and exploring the local area at leisure.

Haarlem, the Netherlands

Amsterdam, once a small fishing village, grew into a bustling trade hub and became one of the wealthiest cities in the world during the Dutch Golden Age. Today, the capital of the Netherlands is a captivating city combining its rich history with a modern and progressive atmosphere.  With its vibrant, welcoming atmosphere and diverse culinary scene, Amsterdam is a must-visit destination for travelers seeking a blend of history, art, and contemporary charm.

This morning our walking tour starts with the 13th-century Dam Square, home to Koninklijk Palace, a grand 17th-century palace that is still used to hold official receptions. Other must-sees in Dam Square are Madame Tussauds, the world-famous wax works museum, the New Church (Nieuwe Kerk) - often used for art exhibitions - and Beurs van Berlage, an old stock exchange building now used as a concert hall and an exhibition space.

Next, the Amsterdam flower market, the only floating flower market in the world - and the most fragrant. Here, we explore the multitude of stalls spread across houseboats, a tradition carried over from the old days when the market was supplied by boats. We'll then journey through the UNESCO-listed canal belt, admiring the beautiful canal houses with their distinctive gabled roofs.

This afternoon, we experience a delectable cheese-tasting experience in the charming Jordaan District. Explore this fascinating country through the distinctive flavours of traditional Dutch cheeses, such as Gouda, Edam and Maasdam, complemented by perfectly paired wines to enhance the tasting journey.

The rest of the day is at leisure to explore Amsterdam as you choose.

Amsterdam Flower Market, the Netherlands

RIJKSMUSEUM

Enjoy a captivating journey through the art and history of the Netherlands with a visit to Rijksmuseum. The museum houses an extensive collection of masterpieces from the Dutch Golden Age, including works by renowned artists such as Rembrandt, Vermeer and Frans Hals. To enhance your experience, the museum offers guided tours, audio guides, and informative displays that provide valuable insights into the artworks and historical context.

Beyond paintings, the museum also features an impressive collection of historical artefacts, including intricate Delftware ceramics, period furniture, and silverware. These objects offer a glimpse into the daily lives and craftsmanship of the past. The museum shop is also worth a visit, offering a range of art-related souvenirs, books, and unique gifts to commemorate your visit.

Discover Amsterdam at your own pace with an afternoon at leisure. You may opt to visit any of the city's famous museums and galleries - such as the Van Gogh and Anne Frank Museum - take a leisurely bike ride or unwind in one of the cosy cafes in De Negen Straatjes (or The Nine Streets). The choice is yours.

City break to Amsterdam

City break to Amsterdam 0

City Breaks along the Rhine

Amsterdam is an unbelievably diverse city. Old and new, quiet and bustling, cultured and commercial, small-town and cosmopolitan – every description of the canal city involves contradictions.

With nearly 7,500 listed buildings, Amsterdam offers the highest concentration of historical monuments in the Netherlands and is thus the perfect destination for a city trip. There is a piece of history waiting to be discovered around every corner in the Old Town, from illustrated gable stones and old shipyards to the Secret Church in the attic of a canal-side house.

Soak up the Dutch atmosphere during a romantic canal tour. The world-famous museums of the city invite you to join a cultural tour of discovery. Pay a visit to one of the many street markets and immerse yourself in the culinary variety. As well as fresh fruit and vegetables, you will also find colourful flowers and other goods typical for the country at the markets. Those who find the hustle and bustle of the city too much can enjoy a relaxing walk through the idyllic Vondelpark.

Excursions and Sightseeing in Amsterdam

AMSTERDAM´S CANALS Amsterdam Städtereise mit A-ROSA

AMSTERDAM´S CANALS

Amsterdam is a city with an abundance of water. With around 200 canals, moats, locks and other similar bodies of water, this European city welcomes you on a reflective tour of the canals. Lean back and take in the diversity of the capital city whilst the boat floats gently through the canals. The main canals Singel, Herengracht, Keizergracht and Prinsengracht flow through the city centre. You can book canal tours quickly and easily in the city, for example in the central station.

MUSEUMS IN AMSTERDAM Rijksmuseum Amsterdam mit A-ROSA entdecken

MUSEUMS IN AMSTERDAM

With around 60 museums, Amsterdam has the highest concentration of museums in the world, including the Van Gogh Museum with the works ‘The Potato Eaters’ and ‘The Bedroom’. The Rijksmuseum is finally complete after ten years of renovation. Visitors have the chance to learn about the country’s history, craftsmanship and art. There is also a lot to discover for children of all ages in the NEMO Science Museum. And not only children will have a great time here – adults can learn a lot, too.

ANNE FRANK HOUSE

The Anne Frank House is situated directly on the Prinsengracht canal. It offers an insight into the life of Anne Frank, the Jewish girl whose diary – written during the Second World War – later became world-famous. The young girl hid from the Nazi regime in what is today known as the Anne Frank House. The small flat in which the family lived can be reached via a secret door. Tragically, the hiding place was discovered and Anne Frank died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Visitors can take a look at the hiding place in the building as well as an exhibition on the persecution of Jews and on fascism.

Vondelpark Amsterdam

The 48-hectare Vondelpark was created as the first public park in Amsterdam in 1877 and named after Renaissance poet Joost van den Vondel. There is also an impressive monument of him in the park. Wealthy citizens joined forces to create a ‘green lung’ in their new, exclusive neighbourhood south of the Canal Ring. Today, Café Vertigo, with one of the most beautiful and lively terraces, the Melkhuis restaurant and the Blauwe Teehuis provide outstanding refreshments.

The Oude Kerk – Old Church in English – towers above Amsterdam’s red light district. The historical building is one of the oldest remaining buildings in the Dutch capital. The church has retained its Gothic architecture. In 1951, the building was closed, as it was in danger of collapsing, and restored over the following two years. The high windows and extraordinary architecture give the church a charming character. The monument can be visited every day. Climb the tower and look out over the rooftops of Amsterdam.

ROYAL PALACE OF AMSTERDAM Marktplatz Amsterdam

ROYAL PALACE OF AMSTERDAM

The Royal Palace – or Koninklijk Paleis in Dutch – is right in the city centre. There’s always hustle and bustle in the Dam Square in front of the palace. The Madame Tussauds wax museum also borders the square. When first built, the royal palace initially served as the city hall. At the time, the decorative building reflected the wealth of the Netherlands. It was only after the French Revolution that Napoleon used the building as a palace where he made his brother king, who then resided there. Today, you can visit the rooms of the royal palace as part of exciting tours.

Albert Cuypmarkt

The Albert Cuypmarkt, named after a renowned landscape painter, is the largest daily market in Amsterdam. The market took place for the first time in 1904. At the time it was a Saturday market made up of handcarts and street vendors. Just eight years later, the Saturday market turned into a market that took place six times a week – exactly how it is today, still on Albert Cuypstraat in the district of De Pijp. Countless market stalls offer typical Dutch specialities such as flowers and cheese. Fruit, vegetables, textiles and other products are also on offer.

AMSTERDAM´S RED-LIGHT DISTRICT Amsterdam Nachts

AMSTERDAM´S RED-LIGHT DISTRICT

The red-light district in Amsterdam is also a small tourist attraction. Exciting tours offer visitors authentic insights into the red-light district of this Dutch city. As well as the prominent neon signs, speciality shops and striking house façades, you will also find a few museums. Soak up the unique character of this district of Amsterdam. As a contrast, you could pay a visit to the Oude Kerk, a church which can be found in the middle of the red-light district.

Amsterdam river cruises, about amsterdam.

Whether you’re on a voyage which exclusively explores the waterways or one which is part of a longer Rhine itinerary, Amsterdam river cruises have so much to offer. Amsterdam is home to over 60 miles of canals and is divided into around 90 islands, earning it the nickname the Venice of the North. Like most historic cities, it also has its fair share of beautiful architecture and, of course, the opportunity for a canal boat ride.

Exploring Amsterdam

As far as individual attractions go, Amsterdam boasts two very popular ones which are must-sees for any first-time visitor. Get there early if you want to avoid the queues to enter the Anne Frank House, which tells the utterly moving story of the celebrated Second World War diarist. As well as being a museum, this was the very place where Anne Frank hid from the Nazis for over two years. The Netherland’s most celebrated artist is also honoured in fitting style in the Van Gogh Museum, which houses the world’s largest collection of works from the Dutch master. The life of another legend of the canvas can be explored with a trip to Rembrandt House, the 17th-century dwelling where the artist lived and worked.

Amsterdam also boasts one of the most celebrated concert halls in the world, the Royal Concertgebouw, which is home to a talented orchestra and some equally exceptional acoustics. The good news for classical fans is that a free concert is held weekly but, even if you’re just curious, it’s worth going along to see for yourself one of the city’s most iconic buildings.

Amsterdam Tips

Bicycles are a way of life in Amsterdam so be careful not to walk in a cycle lane while seeing the sights. Be sure to try some Poffertjes pancakes at a café during your visit as they’re a local delicacy and remember, chips are always served with mayonnaise here.

River cruises from Amsterdam

A discovery tour through the provinces of the netherlands.

Located between the North Sea and the Ijsselmeer, Amsterdam is an ideal departure port for a river cruise through the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Via canals, the city is connected with the great rivers Rhine, Meuse and Scheldt. On Amsterdam cruises you can discover three countries from their most beautiful side. Set out from the Dutch capital to discover the diversity of the provinces of the Netherlands. Take a stroll through the historic old towns of Maastricht and Utrecht, enjoy the charm of typical Dutch coastal towns such as Hoorn and Stavoren, and sample the world-famous Dutch cheese in the "cheese cities" of Alkmaar and Gouda. You also won't have far to go to Belgium on a cruise from Amsterdam. Immerse yourself in the history of the Middle Ages in Ghent, discover ancient and modern art in the museums of Antwerp and enjoy Belgium's excellent cuisine and countless types of beer during a visit to Brussels. Last but not least, the Amsterdam cruise will also take you to the north of Germany, where you will get to know proud small and large Hanseatic cities.

City Highlights

Amsterdam is one of those cities that every traveler should have visited at least once in his life. No wonder, every year millions upon millions of tourists flock to the city on the canals to enjoy the flood of sights and cultural offerings. The best way to discover Amsterdam is by taking a boat ride along the canals or a walk along the unique canals. Art lovers will be immediately drawn to one of the world-famous museums, such as the Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk Museum or the Van Gogh Museum. Party people will find their happiness in the nightlife and red light district De Wallen. And beer drinkers should by no means miss the Heineken Experience.

The oldest city in the Netherlands exudes original Dutch flair with gabled little houses, small cheese shops and delicacies on the "Grote Markt". In the narrow streets, yesterday and today go hand in hand. Therefore, a visit to the Gothic St. Stevenskerk, including the burial cellar, as well as a stroll along the shopping street "Lange Hezelstraat" should be on the sightseeing plan. With freshly fried Kibbelingen in the wintry Kronenburgerpark can be perfectly paused afterwards.

You should definitely use the stopover in Utrecht to take a look at this beautiful Dutch city at your leisure. Whether you visit the famous Centraal Museum for ancient and modern art or prefer to discover the provincial capital on a leisurely canal cruise from the water - the historic architecture and the many lovingly restored houses will inspire you. In the center of the city, the landmark of Utrecht, the 112 m high Utrecht Cathedral, watches over the city. It was built between 1321 and 1382 and is considered the oldest and highest church tower in the Netherlands. If you climb the 465 steps, you will be rewarded with a fantastic view. If you like it more contemplative, just take a nice stroll through the alleys and typical Nierderland courtyards that Utrecht is known for. Or how about a visit to the colorful flower market? Utrecht is always worth a visit.

The Dutch city of Dordrecht is a former trading city thanks to its location on the water. This past can still be felt in the town today. Be it in the historic city center, at the harbor or even in one of the several museums. Also worth seeing is the "Grote Kerk" and the Augustinian monastery of the 13th century. A walk through Dordrecht is the best way to discover the history of the place.

The port city of Rotterdam is located in the Netherlands and is one of the most interesting places in the world. The modern architecture is significantly involved in this. Among the impressive sights is the horseshoe-shaped market hall with the huge range of goods and the colorful hustle and bustle. In the old harbor with the striking white house, historic ships can be marveled at. For strolling, shopping and partying, the shopping mile Witte de Withstraat is an attraction. The futuristic-looking main station, the bag, also invites to the pub crawl and shopping.

Emmerich is located on the Rhine in North Rhine-Westphalia and has a beautiful Rhine bridge, but also the Eltenberg, as a local mountain. Still in addition, there is a Rhine promenade for walking and strolling. If you want to know more about the art of coffee, you can visit the Museum of Coffee Technology, which is famous for the city of Emmrich. Nearby is the city of Kleve, which is also very worth seeing with its Swan Castle, the zoo and the historic gardens.

Maastricht is a university city in the extreme south of the Netherlands. The city is characterized by its medieval architecture and lively cultural scene. The cobblestone old town is home to the Gothic Church of St. John (Sint Janskerk) and the Romanesque Basilica of St. Servatius, with its important collection of sacred art. On the banks of the Maas River, which flows through the city center, stands the futuristic Bonnefanten Museum of Fine Art.

Roermond is a city and municipality with 58,806 inhabitants in the Dutch province of Limburg, which lies on the border with Germany and near Belgium. Roermond is best known for the Designer Outlet Center, where there are a lot of special discounts on exclusive brands and selected clothing. Directly connected to the outlet center is the city center of Roermond. Here you can walk relaxed between small boutiques and quaint cafes.

Next to Roermond is the city of Venlo, which has 101,984 citizens, almost twice as many inhabitants as the neighboring city. Small stores within the center are perfect for a shopping trip. If you are looking for art and culture, you should visit the Limburg Museum, which tells a lot about the people of Limburg and the culture. Another point of reference is the Oude Markt in downtown Venlo, where you can find many restaurants that can be recommended especially if you long for a delicious wine in the sunny Netherlands.

Located in the province of Noord-Holland, Alkmaar in the Netherlands is also known as the cheese city of Holland. You should therefore plan a visit to the traditional cheese market as well as a visit to the cheese museum. Alkmaar also has a historic city center with many shops, cafes and restaurants. You can easily explore Alkmaar on foot. Even more beautiful, however, is a round trip along one of the canals, because similar to Amsterdam, Alkmaar is also known as a canal city. In one of the typical Giethoornse Punter you will sail under the numerous bridges and have enough opportunity to discover the many monuments of the city. Back on solid ground, we still recommend a visit to the Beatles Museum in Alkmaar. In addition to the Cheese Museum, which gives a closer look at cheese production, the Beatles Museum is another much-visited attraction in Alkmaar. Should you then still have a little time, you can start for a bike ride to the nearby beach.

Description and info of river cruises in the Netherlands

On this river cruise through the Netherlands you will get to know three of the most beautiful and important cities in the country. From Düsseldorf you will first visit beautiful Amsterdam, the largest and also most unique city in the country. During a boat trip over the world-famous canals of Amsterdam, you will not be able to get out of the amazement. Enjoy the countless small canals with their picturesque bridges and magnificent town houses along the banks. With its world-famous art museums, such as the Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam is also always worth a visit for art fans. The second stop on the trip is Rotterdam, which as the second largest city in the Netherlands is a modern contrast to historic Amsterdam. The highlight of a visit to Rotterdam is undoubtedly a harbor cruise, during which you will get to know the largest and busiest port in Europe. Third and final shore visit of your cruise through Holland is Arnhem. Although not as well known to tourists as Amsterdam and Rotterdam, the capital of the province of Gelderland is still worth a visit. Fashionistas will have their true joy at the numerous boutiques in the Modekwartier. And animal lovers will spend a great day in the country's most famous zoo, Burgers' Zoo.

This river cruise through Holland and Belgium takes you to three of the largest metropolises in the two Benelux countries. From Düsseldorf, you will first head downriver to Amsterdam. The charm of the largest city in the Netherlands is its unique canal belt, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its historical significance. Discover the city's many narrow and crooked historic buildings on the waterfront during a walk, bike ride or boat tour. From Amsterdam, continue your journey to Antwerp. The vibrant metropolis of Flanders combines history and modernity in a more harmonious way than almost any other city in Europe. Here, centuries-old buildings such as the Church of Our Lady, the Steen Castle and the magnificent houses on the Grote Markt combine with many examples of modern architecture, such as the Museum aan het Stroom. Here, old Flemish masters meet a very lively contemporary art scene in the city's art museums. And don't forget to sample one of Flanders' hundreds of beers while in Antwerp. The final stop on your river cruise through Holland and Belgium is modern Rotterdam. At the mouth of the Rhine into the North Sea, you will experience not only Europe's largest port, but also hypermodern architecture and a very interesting gastronomic offer.

On this river cruise through the Netherlands, you'll immerse yourself in some of the country's oldest and most beautiful cities. First stop of the cruise is Nijmegen, the oldest city in the country. Main sights of Nijmegen are the Stevenskerk and the market square with the Boterwaag, the Sint-Stevenspoortje and numerous beautiful town houses. From Nijmegen, you will cross the Maas River to Maastricht, the southernmost city in the Netherlands. Maastricht is not only known for its beautifully preserved city center with the Romanesque St. Servatius Basilica and the Gothic St. Janskerk, but is also popular for its southern flair. Downstream on the Maas River, the tour continues via Roermond, with its many small boutiques and quaint cafés, to Venlo, where you should have seen the Old Town Hall and the Limburg Museum. Children will love to spend their day in Venlo at the amusement park Toverland or the play park Klein Zwitserland. Via the old fortified town of Gorinchem, you will continue your river cruise to Dordrecht - one of the oldest cities in Holland - which exudes the typical charm of the country with its numerous waterways. Don't miss a visit to the Grote Kerk, the highly praised collection of paintings in the Dordrechts Museum and the Augustinian monastery Het Hof. Your journey on the Rhine and Meuse concludes in Arnhem, which is best known as a museum city. Here you will be spoilt for choice between the wine museum, the water museum and the open-air museum.

This river cruise through Holland and Belgium is a voyage of discovery to some of the most beautiful cities in the two Benelux countries. Starting in Düsseldorf, you will depart for Amsterdam, where you can enjoy the world's unique charm of Holland's largest city along the canal belt. The mixture of dozens of small canals, hundreds of bridges and countless crooked houses makes Amsterdam such a special city. But also the art and shopping scene of Amsterdam are among the best in Europe. Afterwards you will get to know Hoorn, a typical Dutch coastal town on the shores of the Ijsselmeer. In this charming harbor town, you will breathe in the flair of Holland's Golden Age and experience maritime history at every turn. Set sail from Hoorn on a sailboat or take a trip on a small steam train. From Hoorn, travel on to Rotterdam, Holland's largest port city, where you can also experience the largest port in Europe. A boat trip along the miles of wharves is a very special event. Next shore leave is Ghent. In the Flanders university town, you will hardly be able to decide what to do first: a tour of the massive Count's Castle, the majestic St. Bavo's Cathedral or the picturesque Belfry. Or perhaps you would prefer a stroll along the waterfront, along the Grass and the Korenlei. The medieval city center of Ghent is without a doubt one of the most beautiful old towns in Europe. You will also experience numerous medieval sights during your next stop in Antwerp. However, Antwerp is also a vibrant modern city with an extremely lively fashion and art scene. The conclusion of your river cruise through Holland and Belgium is Nijmegen, the oldest city in the Netherlands.

On this cruise through Holland you will get to know many of the most beautiful provinces of the Netherlands. The first stop on your river cruise is Cuijk on the Meuse River, where you can experience history at the Foundation Museum Ceuclum, the Sint Agatha Monastery and the St. Martinuskerk. Via Roermond, you will sail up the Meuse River to Maastricht. The capital of the province of Limburg delights with a great mix of historical sights, cultural highlights, cozy restaurants and hip cafes. From Maastricht you drive to Antwerp, the heart of Flanders. Here you can not only shop for fashion, art and diamonds, but also enjoy magnificent historic and modern architecture. In Dordrecht in South Holland, you will immerse yourself in the exciting past of a former trading city. The historic city center, the harbor and the museums of Dordrecht bear witness to the great history of the city. Via Rotterdam, where you will be amazed by the largest port in Europe, you will travel on to historic Gouda, whose scales, town hall and St. John's Church are among the most beautiful buildings in the Netherlands. In Gouda, of course, you can't miss learning all about the world-famous cheese at the Gouda Cheese Experience. The conclusion of your cruise through the provinces of the Netherlands is at the same time one of the highlights: Amsterdam. Enjoy the unique flair of the Amsterdam canals at the end of your cruise through Holland with a glass of Heineken or a coffee in one of the cozy cafes on the banks of the canals.

A river cruise through Holland and Belgium is hard to beat for variety. In almost every city of the two Benelux countries there are beautiful historical sights to visit. However, many of the metropolises of the Netherlands, such as Rotterdam and Antwerp, are also known for their modern architecture. Art lovers will discover numerous old and new masterpieces in the museums of Amsterdam, Antwerp, Ghent and Maastricht. Sporty people can enjoy sailing or kayaking on the many waters of Holland and Belgium. That both countries are a paradise for cyclists is widely known anyway. And whether with a Belgian beer in Antwerp, a bag of fries in Brussels or a coffee in Amsterdam - the bars, cafes and restaurants in Belgium and the Netherlands are way out in front in Europe when it comes to coziness.

The starting point of a river cruise to the Netherlands is the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, Düsseldorf. Due to its excellent connection to the highway network, its large airport and its important train station, Düsseldorf is easily accessible from anywhere in Germany. The VIVA Cruises team will be happy to assist all guests in planning their journey to Düsseldorf.

What people love about river cruise tours from amsterdam to budapest.

The inclusions were excellent, walking tour guides at most locations were brilliant and well informed. The Cruise Director (Richard Grey) was absolutely fantastic, running the program with precision, and good humour. The entire crew was magnificent. Just a couple of small things that were a bit off; firstly, the cab drivers at the end of the cruise for those travelling under own means, advice of what the coat should be to hotel in Budapest was not clear (they didnt use a meter!). Perhaps a ball-park idea would have been nice to know. The walkibg tours were in some cases a bit rushed - although with the sailing schedule understandable. The on-board information system was great, although it would be really nice to be able to download the fact sheets of the towns and other POIs that show on it, via QR code reader on smart phones. The codes are there, but even Cruise Director couldnt advise whether they are available to the guests. Seems its all locked down to Scenic internal servers. Lastly, the backpacks supplied are fantastic, although an external pocket with the elastic bungee cord mesh to hold the supplied water for the shore excursions would be a good idea (internal pockets plentiful, but water bottle leaked onto clothes inside bag). Thank you, had the most awesome time. The nice touch was the 30th anniversary card signed by the cruise director and bottle of champagne on ice waiting for us on the balcony when we arrived back from a shore excursion was fantastic.
Best trip ever. We can’t think of what we can do to top this trip.
Cruise was excellent. Staff were friendly and helpful. Food was excellent. All told a very pleasant experience. Would have no hesitation in booking another Cruise with Amawaterways through Tourradar. Sarah and William Leonard

15 Travel Writer-approved River Cruise Essentials for Europe and Beyond – From $13 at Amazon

Whether the “road” is the Mississippi or the Mekong, here’s what to pack for a comfortable river cruise journey.

As a travel writer, river cruises are one of my favorite underrated ways to cover ground in a new location. Next month, I’ll be cruising the romantic Rhine River from Amsterdam to Basel with Riverside Luxury Cruises . If this was my maiden voyage, I’d be stressing about what to pack. After all, cruising on a 100-foot-long vessel close to shore is a lot different than cruising on a 1,000-foot-long cruise liner at sea. But fortunately, this won’t be my first river excursion: I traveled down the Danube with my mom in 2017 and know exactly what to pack for a river cruise — plus, what you can skip.

Because my friend from high school is joining me on this upcoming trip, I’ve put together this river cruise packing list so she doesn’t make a mistake and bring along a floor-length gown (spoiler alert: most river cruises don’t have formal nights). Similarly, she can leave the Dramamine at home (it won’t be nearly as rocky as cruising the ocean).

But this list isn’t just for her, of course. Whether you’re going to be on the same 55-suite “ Riverside Debussy ” with us next month, or you’re preparing to take on the mighty Mekong in Vietnam , here is a list of the 15 best items to pack for a river cruise, no matter where you’re traveling.

Merokeety Waffle 2-piece Tracksuit

Buy on Amazon

I like to dress up on a regular cruise, but I also love that river cruises are far more casual affairs. While that doesn’t mean you can show up to breakfast in your bathrobe and slippers, you can get away with rocking something comfortable and cute like this two-piece tracksuit without getting any side eye. It has nearly 1,800 five-ratings, and many shoppers praise its versatility. Wear it as pajamas, or pair it with some cute shoes and jewelry for a day of sightseeing. The shorts have pockets and an adjustable drawstring waist. Plus, the waffle fabric is soft and lightweight. “Was the comfiest set for traveling seven hours in a car,” wrote one shopper.

Hoka Women's Walking Shoe Trainers

Buy on Zappos

Another perk of river cruises? Because you don’t have to deal with docking a massive ship or tendering to shore, you can spend more time on land, seeing the sights (for instance, our first excursion on the Rhine will be a pub crawl in Antwerp). This also means you’ll probably be walking more than a normal cruise, so you’ll want a comfy pair of walking shoes like these best-selling Hokas beloved by nurses and doctors who spend all day on their feet. They’re so comfortable and durable that one nurse who left a five-star review said it will probably be years before they need to replace them.

Simo Solis Lite 4G LTE WiFi Mobile Hotspot

If you’re cruising on a river with locks, which are used to raise or lower water levels, expect to lose WiFi while you’re in them. Usually, you’re only without internet for 10 minutes or so, but if that worries you, consider getting this portable WiFi hotspot that uses 4G instead of satellite. Even if you don’t have connection issues on the river, it’s still handy for having reliable internet during your on-shore day excursions. It doesn’t require a SIM card, and it also doubles as a power bank, making it even more versatile.

“I was on a cruise with people from many different countries and they all had opted for using e-sims,” one shopper wrote . “But every single one of them had issues connecting in most countries.”

Each Solic mobile hotspot can connect up to 10 different devices at once, so you can use it for your phone and laptop as well as other travelers in your group.

Prettygarden Womens Summer Wrap Maxi Dress

Although comfort is key on these cruises, I do plan on dressing up a little for sunset cocktails and dinners on board. (But I’m not packing anything that needs dry cleaning!) I’m a big fan of this lightweight, breathable wrap maxi dress from Prettygarden, the same brand behind my beloved flight-attendant approved jumpsuit . Machine-washable and featuring a stylish asymmetrical ruffle hem, it has 7,600 five-star ratings and is currently ranked in the top 10 on Amazon’s list of best-sellers in the women’s casual dress category . “Got so many compliments,” wrote one shopper who bought theirs for a cruise. “It fits perfectly, [and I] love the wrap-around style which allows for some adjustment in the waist.”

Personally, I also appreciate that the sleeves cover the shoulders and the skirt falls past the knees, which is required by many religious sites in Europe.

Naot Kayla Wedge Sandal

Of course, there will also be times when you’ll want to wear a shoe that’s a little more stylish (yet still comfortable). I recommend a pair of Naot wedges like the brand’s best-selling Kayla style. With its modest 1.5-inch heel and cork footbed, it’s a go-to shoe for travelers who appreciate a lightweight leather construction with ample arch support. “I expect to do a fair amount of walking along city streets, garden paths, and cruise ship corridors,” wrote one shopper who got theirs for vacation and noted it was their third pair.

Amazon Kindle

Sure, river cruise ships don’t have all the bells and whistles of their cruiseliner counterparts. But I don’t mind traveling without a waterpark or casino on board. This just means I have more time for relaxing and reading. Unless you have room in your suitcase for a bunch of books, you’ll want an e-reader like Amazon’s popular Kindle. It offers a clear 300 ppi display, 16 GB of storage for holding plenty of books, and can go up to six weeks in between charges. Because you probably won’t have the strongest WiFi on board, download your books before leaving home (and if you dream of being a travel writer, add “ Call You When I Land: A Memoir ,” to your summer reading list.) “If you like to sit on a balcony of a cruise ship, soaking up some rays, and reading, this Kindle is perfect,” wrote one happy cruiser.

Cupshe Women's 2-piece Bikini Set

Although river boats don’t offer Olympic-sized pools, they often have hot tubs, saunas, and steam rooms. For our cruise, I plan on packing this best-selling bikini (it has 7,200 five-star ratings), which I’ve worn everywhere from Nicaragua to New Zealand. The bottoms are reversible, so you get two looks for the price and packing space. With 19 colors and prints available, you’re sure to find something perfect for your style. “I had three other bathing suits on my vacation and wore this one the whole time!” raves one five-star review .

Baleaf Women's UPF 50+ Sun Shirts

Just because you’re on a smaller ship on a river without constant direct sun exposure, it doesn’t mean you’ll avoid sunburn. If you plan on hanging out on the top deck, invest in this UPF 50+ sun shirt. At just $20, it doubles as a rash guard and is great for hiking because it’s made of a moisture-wicking polyester and features flatlock seams for plenty of mobility. With more than 16,000 five-star ratings, it’s one of Amazon’s top-sellers, and many shoppers mention packing it on cruises. “Very good at keeping you cool. Not scratchy…a wardrobe treat,” one shopper, who bought more than one for their cruise, said .

Chaco Womens Z/1 Classic Sandal

If hiking is on your summer river cruise itinerary (ours ends in Switzerland, so I’ll definitely be exploring the Alps), you can hoof it in these machine-washable sandals with more than 4,600 five-star ratings. They were actually designed by a Colorado River rafting guide, so you can rest assured that they’re designed to keep you safe and comfortable, even in wet conditions. I wore my first pair of Chacos for nearly 90 days straight in 2010 when I had the Eurail Pass and traveled all over Europe. My pro tip? Break them in before your trip to avoid any discomfort or blisters. “They’re so comfortable and supportive while letting your feet breathe!” raved one shopper who said they wore them on a cruise and “did a lot of walking in them.”

Occer 12x25 Compact Binoculars

The beauty of river cruises is they get you a lot closer to shore than larger ships. That’s why I recommend packing a pair of binoculars, like these Occer binoculars. You can use them for sightseeing, birdwatching, and more (I like to get an up-close look at nearby castles and country homes when cruising in Europe). While some cruises provide binoculars (Riverside Luxury Cruises does, for instance), you may still want to bring your own pair that are guaranteed to be comfortable and easy to use, like the Occer ones. They weigh less than a pound and fit in the palm of your hand when folded up.

“They were perfect on our cruise,” summed up one shopper . “Used them to look at the moon/sky, ships/land in the distance, and even at the tugs that docked next to use; meaning great for long or close distance viewing.”

Furtalk Sun Hat

Because I’ve had the wind blow my hat overboard before, I now only wear this wide brim hat that comes with a chin strap. And I’m not alone. Available in five colors and as cute as a hat with a chin strap can be, I love that it has a built-in sweatband to keep my forehead cool and dry, and it always bounces back into shape, even after being folded up and stashed in my overflowing carry-on. “This packable hat is well made with quality parts…hat itself, band, and strap,” wrote one shopper who purchased theirs for a Mediterranean cruise.

European Travel Plug Adapter

Although you’ll find river cruises everywhere from the Amazon to Australia, and even the Nile, most are in Europe where you’ll probably run into the type C outlet (the most common around the world). If you plan on plugging in any electronics, pack this travel plug adapter that also features two USB-A ports, so you can charge up to three devices at once. With more than 20,500 five-star ratings, this adapter is a clear winner, with several shoppers mentioning that they used it on their respective river cruises. “It worked like a charm to charge my phone and Kindle,” wrote one while another used theirs with a curling iron . If you do plan on using heating tools abroad, remember you may need a voltage converter.

Riiqiichy Women's Scarf Pashmina

Most river cruises take place in the summer (because rivers freeze over easier than the ocean). But you can still find yourself feeling chilly, especially in the mornings and evenings, because it’s always colder on the water. That’s why I always pack a pashmina like this best-seller. Although it’s made of a polyester and viscose blend, it’s so soft that it could pass as cashmere. Choose from dozens of colors and style it in just about as many ways. “It was a great light layer with dresses or t-shirts when it was a bit windy. It also came in clutch when required to cover our hair up to tour a mosque in Turkey,” recalled one shopper who used theirs on a cruise. Another passenger said they ended up sporting theirs as a swimsuit cover up.

Nocs Provisions Zoom Tube 8x32 Monocular

If you want something half the weight (8.5 ounces to be exact) and size of regular binoculars, I highly recommend Nocs Provisions’ monocular. Although it’s pricey, it’s stacked with useful features like smartphone capability so you can take photos through it and is also water-resistant and scratch-proof. Plus, it comes with a “No-Matter-What” lifetime warranty, so you can return it if anything happens. I especially love the convenience it offers: It can be used — and easily adjusted — with one hand. One reviewer called it a “great travel companion,” writing: “Super easy to pack and carry for that extended vacation. Provides just as much detail as their binoculars without the additional size and weight. Great gift to yourself or someone else that travels!”

Iqbar Brain and Body Plant Protein Bars

Most river boats also don’t offer 24/7 room service. But that’s OK because I never cruise a river without snacks. If you’re looking for a protein bar that’s easy on the stomach (I have IBD, so it’s a must for me), consider these best-selling bars that are vegan and made with plant proteins. They’re also keto-friendly, low in sugar, and packed with fiber to help you stay regular on the road (or river, in this case). “They’re great for a healthy snack or a meal replacement when you’re busy. I ordered these just before a vacation and they are a fantastic pick-me-up during your travels,” wrote one satisfied shopper .
