Great Runs

Rome, Italy

rome running tour

Rome, Italy is one of the world’s great cities to visit. Filled with antiquities, wonderful historic sites, lovely old neighborhoods and great restaurants, it’s also a fantastic walking city. The running scene has been improving. Yes, there are busy, traffic-choked roads, tangled lanes difficult to navigate, and the air quality can be poor in the summer — but there are great places to run within proximity to where most travelers stay. The Rome metro area is divided into 15 ‘Districts’ (Municipio) inside the A90 Belt Road.

Highlights of Rome running include a nearly 9-mile “ Rome Sights ” tour, including some of the principal landmarks and historic sites (go early or on Sundays!). Running along the Tiber River can be a pleasure, especially since a bike path along part of it was put in a few years ago. Rome’s three largest parks – Villa Borghese , Villa Ada , and Villa Pamphili are also terrific for running. And running on the historic Via Appia Antica and the Parco de Caffarella is one of the most unique runs in the world. Southeast of the city, there are running paths passing ancient aqueducts in the Parco degli Acquedotti . Northeast of the city, the Valle dell’Aniene is a terrific linear park path. And it’s worth the trip to Anzio for the lovely seaside path. If you’d like to have an in-person guided running experience in Rome, we highly recommend our friends at Go! Running Tours .

Running in Rome will undoubtedly incorporate some of its famous “seven hills” east of the Tiber, as well as Vatican Hill and Janiculum northwest of the river. For transport, there is are two metro lines, which go round rather than through the historic city. There’s an extensive bus system.

rome-climate

Rome’s weather is Mediterranean. Summers are hot and dry and can be uncomfortable for running. Spring and fall is almost perfect for running. Winters are mild to cool but rarely cold, with moderate rain. Snow and freezing temperatures are rare.

Like any major European city frequented by tourists, there is a huge choice of places to stay. Pretty much anywhere you stay in the most visited parts of Rome will provide access to some of the runs in this guide. A few recommendations, for runners.

  • Trastevere area . Lovely neighborhood, close to river path, major sights, and a couple of miles from Villa Doria Pamphili park.
  • Near Borghese Gardens . Great running there, can combine with Villa Ada Park to the north, or Tiber river paths. Also not too far to major sites such as the Vatican, Spanish Steps, Colosseum.
  • Near the Vatican . Good access to the Tiber River paths and the Villa Dorian Pamphili park.
  • Near the Colosseum . If you stay just south of the Colosseum, good access to running around there, Circus Maximus, and Parco della Caffarella & Appia Antica.

Dario was extremely flexible. I even arrived 10 minutes late after getting lost on the way. He was right there waiting for me at the agreed on location. The run itself was around 5k. We passed through the colloseum, the circo massimo and other locations. He is quite the runner so if you are doing this to squeeze in a run during the holiday go for it, you will also enjoy a good scenery and a nice chat with a local.

Best of Rome Private Walking Tour See all experiences

Wherever in the world I go my running shoes are either on my feet or in my luggage. Who doesn’t love exploring a new city? Combine your wanderlust with that energising high from your natural endorphins and you have the perfect recipe for seeing a city and staying fit. This style of exercising is becoming increasingly popular and these days the travel industry has named the trend ‘sightrunning’. And where is the best place to sight run in the world? Rome.

Sight Running in Rome

Rome is often dubbed by the guides of the city as an open-air museum. Literally every corner of the city you venture to has something, beautiful, famous, or ancient! Coming from a seasoned runner and intrepid traveler, I can definitely say that running in Rome is quite unlike running anywhere else in the world. If you know where you’re going that is! This article explores where to run in Rome and some essential tips to make your run unforgettable.

Russ running in Rome on our Adventure Run in Rome

Where to run in Rome?

Historical center.

The historical center of Rome is home to countless beautiful churches, monuments, and archaeological sites that make a picture perfect backdrop for your run in Rome! Surprisingly, the center of Rome is not as big a city as you may think. It is easily achievable to see the main sights of Rome, or the highlights of Rome, in a 5-10k run. To put that into perspective, every day I operate a relaxed 8k running tour of Rome that passes the Colosseum, Circus Maximus , River Tiber, Vatican, St. Peter’s Basilica, Castel Sant’Angelo , the Spanish Steps , and the Trevi Fountain. A tip from myself would be to go early and beat the traffic! Although it’s not as bad as people make out, the roads in Rome are probably crazier than wherever you’re reading this from. Stay alert, and cross in the right places!

The River Tiber

The river Tiber has been the bloodline of Rome for over 2000 years! It snakes through the center of Rome and provides one of the best running routes in Rome. What I love the most about running down by the Tiber is the tranquility, temperature, and ornate bridges. When the city is hot and chaotic the cycle path along the river is the perfect place to cool down and let the water drown out the cars. The path conveniently goes all the way up the river which makes it super simple as you don’t have to worry about directions, you just need to remember whats flight of stairs to back to street level on the way back. Long-distance runners can follow the track along the river north past Stadio Olimpico all the way out of the city into farmland.

Ponte Fabricio. Photo credit Giuseppe Moscato.

This is the Romans’ favorite hang out spot on a long summer day and probably not what you would expect of a conventional park. It covers a vast 200 hectares consisting of farmland, fields and woodland. Don’t be surprised when you encounter wildlife and livestock en route – or if a track is blocked because a flock of sheep is occupying it! Amongst nature are plenty of Roman ruins to be found including villas, catacombs, aqueducts & the famous Appia Antica – the first Roman highway!

I’ve traveled well and Caffarella definitely features in my top 10 trail runs ever! The park is situated just outside the historical center and can be reached using the Metro A Line to Colli Albani .

Villa Pamphili

My favourite of Rome’s Seven Hills is Janiculum Hill – the pace of life here is the opposite of Rome’s chaotic center. Located in the green part of Janiculum Hill is the divine Villa Pamphili. The luxury villa and gardens were once home to the insanely wealthy Doria Pamphili family. Today these picture-perfect gardens are now a park for all to use and enjoy. The route around the outside of the park is about 5k. Don’t forget to pay a visit to the tortoises in the pond, or stop off at the delightful cafe for a well-deserved coffee after!

Tips for running in Rome

The early bird catches the worm.

Run early when in Rome . It makes a huge difference. Particularly if you are planning to run in the historic center because after 9 am the roads get manic and after 10 am the areas around the major attractions get busy. The last thing you want on the run of a lifetime is to be spending time focusing on dodging pedestrians and traffic. Remember that Rome can exceed 35 degrees / 100 Fahrenheit in late spring, summer, and early autumn. Beat the heat.

Water fountains galore

Fresh drinking water for all was a strong ethos for the Ancient Romans which lead to the mighty aqueducts. Modern Romans decided in 1874 that there should be free drinking water fountains all over the city – today there are over 2,000 fountains in Rome ! Super convenient for us runners! Bring a bottle if you like, or get stuck in and do it the roman way! There’s actually a free app that tells you where every drinking fountain is available on the Google Play Store or the Apple Store .

Drinking from a nasone fountain in Rome

Take a look around some attractions

Make sure to pop inside the churches and explore the courtyards that you pass, you never know what you might find! One of my favourite ways to spice up my running tours is to visit the Pantheon as they open in the morning, and also the nearby Chiesa di Sant’Ignazio. Experiencing these incredible buildings by yourself is a feeling that will stay with you forever!

Good Running Shoes

This one should go without saying… but most of the historical centre is covered by those picturesque little cobble stones that everyone loves. If you decide to go running in Rome without the right running shoes they can be unforgiving!

7 hills of Rome running tour with ArcheoRunning

  • By Testaccina
  • 11th April 2022

The 7 hills of Rome running tour or walking tour with ArcheoRunning is perhaps the best way to explore the history of Rome and get some exercise.

Rome’s glorious past is mapped out in its monuments and ruins, which is why the city is so often called an open-air museum. Rome’s history also equates to its seven hills, home to key battles, legends and seats of power.

The 7 hills of Rome running tour with ArcheoRunning combines a walking or running tour of downtown Rome, topped off with by breakfast or lunch, depending on the time of year. Whatever your level, there’s a walking or running tour with ArcheoRunning which is right for you!

ArcheoRunning – Rome running tour guide

ArcheoRunning, founded by Isabella Calidonna, is a tour guide and events organiser based in Rome offering experiences that combine archeology and urban history with running or walking tours of Rome. ArcheoRunning Rome running tours and walking tours are adapted to every level of fitness. That means, even if you are a total beginner or fairly out of shape, ArcheoRunning still has a tour for you.

An art historian with a degree in Cultural Heritage Conservation and a post-graduate degree in Art History from the University of Siena, Isabella hails from Calabria but now lives in Rome. She is an officially licensed tour guide for Rome and a licensed guide for the Vatican Museums, as well as a certified museum educator for people who are visually impaired or on the autism spectrum. In terms of her sporting credentials, Isabella is also a national track and field coach (licensed by Fidal) and personal trainer for the Italian National Olympic Committee (Coni).

In 2016, Isabella launched ArcheoRunning to combine her passions for history and sport. As she says in her own words, ArcheoRunning tours aren’t a tough training session or a marathon: they are a wellbeing-focused, endorphin-fuelled journey through one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

ArcheoRunning tours tell the history of Rome while strolling, power walking or running in small or entirely private groups.

Her running tours of Rome are also suitable for beginners, representing a gentle jog with lots of pauses to admire monuments as you go.

The 7 hills of Rome running tour or walking tour with ArcheoRunning is perhaps the best way to explore the history of Rome and get some exercise.

7 hills of Rome walking tour with ArcheoRunning – review

I tried the walking tour version of the 7 hills of Rome tour with ArcheoRunning , and I wasn’t disappointed! The tour lasted around 5 hours in total, of which just over 3 hours were dedicated to walking between the 7 hills of Rome, with around 2 hours for a relaxing lunch at the end of it.

The ArcheoRunning 7 hills of Rome walking tour covers just over 11km and is suitable for anyone with a reasonably good fitness level, but no experience of running is required. On the tour, guide Isabella takes you on a walking tour to each of the 7 hills of Rome, pausing along the way to share fascinating facts about the history of each hill and how they shaped the history of Rome.

There is plenty of time to get your breath back as the tour makes several stops, although Isabella also uses a personal microphone with headsets, meaning that each person in the party can move at their own pace, and don’t need to be right next to the guide all the time to hear what is going on.

On our walking tour of the 7 hills of Rome, we met by the Palatine Hill and crossed Circus Maximus to reach the Aventine. These two hills encapsulate the legend of the original Roman warriors, Romulus and Remus – although I’ll let Isabella tell the full story!

From the picturesque Aventine with its attractive flora, it’s a fairly easy stroll down and then up to the Capitoline Hill, the seat of ancient and modern power in Rome. This sits right next to the Viminale and Esquilino Hills, with the tour finishing at the Celian Hill, before wandering back down to the starting point at the Palatino.

Our tour ended with a lovely lunch next to Circus Maximus at Osteria Circo, but Isabella also has plenty of other great restaurant ideas next Circus Maximus .

This is an enjoyable tour for all ages, thanks to the gentle pace of the 7 hills of Rome walking tour, although there are plenty of hills to climb, as the name suggests!

All in all, it’s a great way to get those endorphins going as you explore the best that Rome has to offer, in the capable hands of ArcheoRunning.

And if you’re interested in walking tours of Rome, and want to try a walking tour with a slightly more gentle pace, why not check out the ArcheoRunning Giro di Peppe walking tour of Rome ?

Highly recommended!

Rome Marathon experience; what it’s like to run in Rome ahead of Rome Marathon 2024

Rome Marathon taking place in front of the Colosseum

The Rome Marathon has become an important and popular staple in the marathon calendar and recently celebrated its 40th anniversary. The 2023 Rome Marathon was another incredible experience with 11,000 runners taking part in a fantastic event in one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. One of those lucky runners was our Product Manager Sarah Boyd, here’s what she made of her Rome Marathon experience…

Rome Marathon provides a once-in-a-lifetime experience, offering a start to a race like no other. “It’s quite an early start, with the first wave going off at 8am and most runners out on the course 15 minutes later which is preferable. This was the first year they had the Frecce Tricolori fly over after painting the sky red, white & green following a rendition of Pavarotti’s Nessun Dorma, I felt genuinely quite emotional, a brilliant experience.” Sarah told us. “The course takes in all of the cities highlights, beginning at the Colosseum and alongside the Imperial Forti you head towards St Peters Square – it’s hard not to be constantly twisting your head for the first part!”

Rome is quite a flat city and the course reflects that in its gradient and layout, but don’t be fooled; the marathon is still a tough challenge; “Once you get out to the river it’s quite a slog on the residential streets, but it’s lovely and flat with plenty of support from then on until the hill at mile 19” Sarah explained. “Then you begin to creep back in to the heart of the city, and with that comes the dreaded cobbles. It felt a bit like when Crash Bandicoot comes across sand! The last 5km is tricky anyway but the added challenge of running on uneven ground does make it hard. I really felt it, but then again, I’d ran out of energy at this point!”

Despite this, the Rome Marathon typically takes place in great running conditions, traditionally taking place in the middle of March. “The weather couldn’t have been any better, 18 degrees and overcast, dreamy conditions! Even better though the days either side were gloriously sunny with mid-20 days, perfect for enjoying the Italian café scene!” Sarah joked.

Indeed, Rome is more than just a place to run a marathon in. The city has so much to explore, with incredible architecture, stunning food and plenty of culture! Sarah recommended just a few for us; “If you’ve visited all the highlights, landmarks such as the Trevi Fountain and Piazza Novana can be very busy, so head to the tours of the Colosseum and the Vatican which are both fantastic – but be warned that you will spend a lot of time on your feet! For a quieter experience head to Trastevere , a Bohemian neighbourhood with cobbled streets and beautiful trattorias, or Villa Doria Pamphili , a quieter area with a beautiful park.”

The packages that Marathon Tours & Travel offer allow you the perfect opportunity to explore the city whilst you’re there, without proving to be too taxing before your race. “Staying within a 10-minute walk of the Colosseum was brilliant, and extremely convenient for before and after the race. I didn’t do a good job of resting my legs as there were so many incredible ruins and landmarks that were within walking distance! The hotel we use is Hotel Lancelo t and I loved it there, it’s a small property, quite traditional with lots of charm and authenticity, we were very well looked after by the staff. And of course, the carb loading situation was top tier!”

Not only is Rome full of so much famous culture, history and architecture, many of it can be accessed with your entry to the Rome Marathon. “Your entry to the marathon gets you free entry to museums that are part of the ‘Institutions of Roma Capitale’ , as well as a Mass of the marathon runners at the Piazza del Popolo.” That’s as well as receiving plenty of free benefits just for the marathon; “You receive a free t-shirt along with nutritional goodies at registration rather than at the end of the run, though water and fruit is also available at the finish line along with a finishers medal!”

So would Sarah run the Rome Marathon again? “Rome is relatively flat, which might surprise some people as Rome is known as the ‘city of 7 hills’. The course is well planned out and while cobbles can catch you out, we had a lot of PBs in our group. I would definitely run Rome again, if you’re thinking of running I’d suggest booking three nights, as it’s a beautiful time of year to explore Italy!”
