Sadhguru Begins 30,000 km Ride From UK To India On BMW K1600 GT Motorcycle
The Save Soil Movement, launched as part of the spiritual leader's Conscious Planet initiative, is aimed at turning the world's attention towards dying soil and growing desertification.
Sadhguru's motorbike journey ends in time for the Summer Solstice on June 21
London's Parliament Square was the flag off point for environmentalist Sadhguru's 30,000-km motorbike tour on Monday, as he set off on his Save Soil awareness campaign across Europe and the Middle East en route to India.
The 64-year-old yoga guru donned his biking gear for the 100-day tour ahead, which will take him to Amsterdam, Berlin and Prague over the course of this week on a BMW K1600 GT motorcycle.
After a series of events scheduled in key cities along the way, he is aiming for a homecoming in New Delhi in 75 days in honour of India's 75th year of independence.
"It's extremely important that we act now. I've been talking about this for over 24 years, but solution can only happen when there is positive policy in every nation," Sadhguru told reporters at the Indian High Commission here before setting off on his bike tour.
"It is still snowing in many parts of Europe and we'll be going through that on a two-wheeler. At this age, it's not really a joy ride. So why am I doing this? Because over 300,000 farmers have committed suicide in the last 20 years. Not just in India, across the world this is happening... one of the main concerns is soil depletion," he said.
The focus is on getting countries to institute national policies towards increasing the organic content in cultivable soil.
"Whether on the cricket field or on the field of life, if we are to play well, soil has to be well. Time to come together and turn things around. Let's make it happen," he said, during a visit to the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground for an interaction with Middlesex Cricket Club (MCC) as part of the UK leg of his tour.
The campaign, which is backed by the World Food Programme and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, calls on policy-makers around the world to make soil regeneration a priority.
"No matter how much wealth, education, and money we have, our children cannot live well unless we restore the soil and water. Conscious Planet is the only way forward," Sadhguru, whose full name is Jagadish Vasudev, said at the University of Birmingham last week.
His lone motorbike journey ends in time for the Summer Solstice on June 21 at the Cauvery Calling project, which is enabling the planting of 2.42 billion trees in private farmlands in the Cauvery river basin to restore the severely depleted river and revitalise the soil.

According to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), over 90 per cent of the earth's soil could become degraded by 2050, leading to catastrophic crises worldwide including food and water shortages, droughts and famines, adverse climate changes, mass migrations and unprecedented rates of species extinction.
The Save Soil campaign aims to inspire at least 3.5 billion people, or 60 per cent of the world's electorate, to support long-term government policies to revitalise soil and reverse its depletion.

Sadhguru aboard on BMW K1600 GT starts 30,000 km ride to promote his 'Save Soil awareness campaign'
The Save Soil Movement, which was created as part of the spiritual leader’s Conscious Planet project, aims to draw attention to dying soil and expanding desertification around the world
Some may find it difficult to believe that Jagadish Vasudev, better known as Sadhguru, a 64-year-old environmentalist, spiritual leader and yoga instructor, has prepared his motorbike for a 100-day journey from the United Kingdom to India. He has planned the 30,000-kilometer motorcycle trip across Europe and the Middle East on his way to India as part of his quest to save soil.
During the course of this week, Sadhguru aboard on BMW K1600 GT sports bike, will visit Amsterdam, Berlin, and Prague. After a series of events in key cities along the road, he plans to return to New Delhi in 75 days to commemorate India’s 75th anniversary of independence.
Sadhguru spoke to reporters at the Indian High Commission in Washington before embarking on his bike tour. He said although it is still snowing in many parts of Europe, he will ride through it on the two-wheeler. Despite the fact that it will be a difficult ride for him at his age, the spiritual leader said that he will do it as over 300,000 farmers committed suicide around the world in the last 20 years, with soil depletion being one of the major issues.
The Save Soil Movement, which was created as part of the spiritual leader’s Conscious Planet project, aims to draw attention to dying soil and expanding desertification around the world. The goal is to persuade countries to adopt national policies directed at boosting the organic content in cultivable soil.
The campaign is backed by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification and the World Food Programme. Conservationist Dr. Jane Goodall, the Dalai Lama, Deepak Chopra, Tony Robbins, Matthey Hayden, Chris Gayle, Juhi Chawla, and Sanjeev Sanyal have all lent their support to the cause.

Why Sadhguru rode this super-cool BMW bike for Save Soil journey
Spiritual leader Sadhguru reveals why he chose the BMW K1600 49GT for his 100-day, 30,000-km 'Save Soil' journey across the world
Spiritual leader Sadhguru has been on a 100-day mission to spread awareness on soil conservation. His 'Save Soil' mission has seen him ride through continents on his bike. While a lot has been spoken and written about his mission, not many have focussed on his ride -- the BMW K1600 49GT bike.
The only time Sadhguru did not use his BMW K1600 49GT was during the Middle East leg of his journey where he used a Honda Africa Twin. That was because the BMW bike, weighing nearly 350 kg and with about 250 kg being supported by the front wheel, did not lend itself well to riding on unpaved surfaces and off-roading.

In an exclusive response to a query from Asianet Newsable, Sadhguru explained why he would never choose any other bike than the BMW K1600 49GT.
Sadhguru said, "If I have to do another 10,000 now, definitely this is my choice. Because of the inline-six engine, there is simply no vibration. The right hand is just fine even after riding for six, seven hours non-stop. Even when we rode like four-and-a-half hours from one gas station to another, there was no buzz or numbness in the hand, which is incredible."

To recall, Sadhguru had used the BMW K1600 49GT even during his 10,000-mile motorcycle exploration of North American spirituality and found that it was great for highways, where one could touch high speeds, and it needed very little maintenance because it uses a shaft transmission.
For his 'Save Soil' mission, adding auxiliary lights and a footrest were the only customisations made to the bike.

The only time he found himself in a spot of bother was when the front tire wore out by the time he hit the Austrian roads. It was pouring during the ride, making Sadhguru wish he had changed the tires earlier. He finally got them changed in Sofia, Bulgaria since he could not find a proper showroom along the route until then.

And during several stretches of the journey, particularly from Switzerland to Paris and then from Riyadh to Manama, winds of 45–65 kmph threatened to push Sadhguru off the road. It took a lot of effort from Sadhguru just to keep the vehicle balanced and on the road.

Explaining how the journey was planned, Sadhguru said, "People's confidence is such that in hundred days, riding 30,000 kilometres, there is not a single day for contingency, either for the man or the machine."
Fortunately, so far, none was needed despite the harsh weather ranging from sub-zero temperatures to temperatures touching 48 degrees Celsius, heavy rain, snow and wind, and challenging terrains.
Why did Sadhguru choose a bike for his journey? Simply because motorcycles excite the youth. Sadhguru said, "Unless the youth get involved in this movement, it is not going to happen."
One reason to choose a motorcycle was to inspire the youth to stand up for the soil. Another reason was to drive home the urgency needed in addressing soil degradation.
Sadhguru says, "During the journey, we have fixed up appointments with various heads of state, agriculture and environment ministers, influencers and well-known personalities. We have written to 730 political parties in the world to bring soil regeneration into their political agendas. If I fly into different countries, doors will not open. They have to see that I am staking my life a bit."
Sadhguru's advice to all the bikers
Responding to concerns about how his back would hold up after long rides over the 100-day, 30,000-km motorcycle journey at the age of 65, averaging 400–450 km of riding per day, Sadhguru quipped, "This is an advertisement for the Yogic back."
When riding for long hours, the spine bears much of the brunt. So, Sadhguru suggests that bikers do some squats during the journey. This, he said, will stretch the lumbar region of the spine and strengthen the muscles along the spine, allowing bikers to keep going for longer.

Isha foundation’s Sadhguru talks about his favourite bike and why he loves riding
Kranti Sambhav talked to Isha Foundation's Sadhguru about the latter's favourite bike and why a spiritual guru prefers riding over driving cars.
Jaggi Vasudev, also called Sadhguru, is a spiritual leader and the founder of Isha Foundation. But not many people know that he is a passionate biker and still enjoys riding motorcycles. He doesn't own a motorcycle but has been seen riding machines like Ducati Scrambler, Multistrada, etc. which the volunteers bring to him. Sadhguru is currently in America where, as part of 'Exploring Spiritual America' drive, he will ride for 10,000 miles or 16,093 km across the country. Team Times Drive managed to talk to Sadhguru about his love for motorcycles and riding during the 'Exploring Spiritual America' ride.
Kranti: What was the idea behind 'Exploring Spiritual America'?
Sadhguru: Almost 17 years ago, I came across a certain experience here. It was something concerned with the native Americans and that very profoundly touched me. Since then I have been trying to explore their spiritual processes, occult, and their way of doing things but my schedule never allowed me. But now, there was a little break in my schedule so I decided to do it. We thought of riding for 10,000 miles, right now we have already over 4,600 miles and looks like it will be well over 10,000 miles because we still have many states and Indian reservations to cover. Unfortunately, because of COVID-19, several reservations are closed so we are negotiating to meet the medicine men and chiefs of the tribes. It's very exciting and wonderful, plus riding a two-wheeler, which was my home for a long time, feels really nice.
Kranti: Which bike are you riding and why did you choose it?
Sadhguru: I am riding BMW K 1600 GT which uses an inline six-cylinder engine. It's a beautiful machine on paved roads but gravel track and even mild off-roading make it difficult to ride. It nearly weighs 350 kg an at least two-thirds of that is concentrated on the front half of the bike to make it extremely stable on the tarmac. But once you go off the road, the front wheel starts sliding all over the place. You know, if your front wheel slides then you rely on prayers, but I never learnt any prayer so I am left to my own skills.
Kranti: When did you start riding and which was your first bike?
Sadhguru: I started riding when I was twelve and got my license as soon as I turned 18. I started riding my father's scooter and If any guest came over, I would thoroughly clean their two-wheeler on the condition that they had to give me the keys, and that's how I started riding. My first motorcycle was Yezdi Roadking, which was my home for almost five years. On average, I was clocking 60,000 km on India roads every year. I would reboot the engine at least twice change three sets of tyres in a year. I did this for around 4.5 - 5 years and then didn't ride for almost 27 years. But during 'Rally for Rivers', someone brought their Ducati Scrambler and asked me to ride. I wasn't sure If I would manage but I didn't have any trouble. So, since the last three years, I am having trouble getting in cars; wherever possible, I prefer to ride a motorcycle.
Kranti: You have been seen riding adventure bikes most of the times. Any particular reason?
Sadhguru: In India, I prefer riding adventure bikes because sometimes the on-road and off-road seems similar. I don't think this K 1600 GT is suitable for Indian roads. It doesn't have telescopic suspension but a central strut spring which works pretty well on highways but the telescopic setup is more suitable for Indian roads. This isn't an ideal bike for India unless you strictly ride on highways. This is why I prefer riding adventure bikes in India.
Kranti: Which one is your favourite bike?
Sadhguru: Whichever bike I am riding at any given time is my favourite motorcycle. Basically, I don't own any bike and someone always brings something to me and I ride that. Here, volunteers want me to ride their bikes like Honda Goldwing, BMW GS, MV Agusta, and more. Each bike has its USP but BMW K 1600 GT seems like the best choice I could make for long rides.
Kranti: What's the fastest you have done on a bike?
Sadhguru: The only crime I have committed in my life is speed. So, now don't make me confess.
Kranti: What makes motorcycles so liberating and exciting in your opinion?
Sadhguru: I don't ride bikes to feel liberated but fundamentally, riding demands attention. I have always said that the education systems should move from enshrining information and data towards attention because it's human attention which is the most vital thing. It's human attention which can open doors and is the basis of the spiritual process. So, a motorcycle is one thing that you cannot ride without paying attention. I am this old and I am still riding, which means I am very attentive. If you are riding without paying attention, then you could have a marker somewhere on the roadside for you.
In the US, people have marked some places and placed plastic flowers because someone close to them met with an accident at that spot. Cars offer safety provisions like airbags that protect you in case of accidents but there's no such thing with motorcycles. I am sure in this Exploring Spiritual America ride, motorcycle riders are more alert than car drivers whenever we are on the roads.
Kranti: For how many hours have you been riding every day?
Sadhguru: Yesterday I rode for 12 hours and one time we rode the whole night till morning. But the areas we are covering now, there is one serious challenge of deer-crossing after sundown. A few days ago, we came across 70 to 80 deers in just 2-3 hours. Hitting a deer while riding is extremely risky, which is why riding at night requires all the more attention.
Kranti: Do you enjoy driving cars? Which one is your favourite?
Sadhguru: I keep driving different cars which is why I do not have a favourite vehicle. But I more of an outdoor person, so I generally always drive a 4X4 SUV. I can't even remember the last time drove a sedan because no one brings them to me anymore. I know that sedans drive better but SUVs give you the freedom of going wherever you want.
Kranti: What will be your message for young bikers and car enthusiasts?
Sadhguru: I am not going to tell people to ride carefully, maintain the speed limit, grab the handle at all times, etc. All I will tell them is to stay alert and stay alive. If you stay alive as long as I have been and still ride motorcycles, then you are doing fine. People ask me what I think of when I am riding? I say -- why the hell will I think while riding? If I have to think, I will sit somewhere and do that. I ride because it keeps me super alert; I observe every pebble, blade of grass, every little bird, and insect that flies around. So, this whole fetish about human thought, unfortunately, has destroyed human genius in many ways. Biking is a dimension where your thoughts are irrelevant and all you need is attention.

Olympic champ Tom Pidcock romps to mountain bike World Cup win ahead of Tour de France
Olympic champion Tom Pidcock rode away from Mathias Fluckiger to win the mountain bike World Cup race at Crans-Montana in a strong performance ahead of his turn with Ineos Grenadiers in the Tour de France
CRANS-MONTANA, Switzerland -- Olympic champion Tom Pidcock rode away from Mathias Fluckiger to win the mountain bike World Cup race at Crans-Montana on Sunday in a strong performance ahead of his turn with Ineos Grenadiers in the Tour de France.
World silver medalist Loana Lecomte won the women's race as she prepares for the Paris Games on home soil.
Pidcock, who overcame some trouble to narrowly win the short-track race Saturday, had no problem on the cross-country course in southwest Switzerland. He finished in 1 hour, 26.28 seconds, giving him more than a minute on the rest of the field.
In fact, Pidcock indicated that he took it easy after building a lead early in the race.
“I made a couple of mistakes after getting my gap. I’ve got big things coming up and I don’t think my teammates (on Ineos) would be too happy if I’d binned myself today,” Pidcock said.
Fluckiger, who finished second to Pidcock on the Olympic course in Tokyo, was 1:10 back in second place in a World Cup run on his home track. Luca Braidot outsprinted World Cup overall leader Nino Schurter in the mud for the bronze medal.
Pidcock has been spending more time on the mountain bike ahead of the Paris Games, where he is heavily favored to win a second consecutive gold medal. But the British multi-disciplinary star will be back on the road bike this week, preparing for the Grand Depart in the Tour de France on Saturday in Florence, Italy.
In the women's race, Lecomte broke through with her first World Cup win of the season, giving her a big shot of momentum as she begins turning her attention to the Olympic races on July 28-29 at Elancourt Hill just outside of Paris.
“It’s good to be back,” she said. “I love this track. Even if we had a dry track, it’s a real mountain bike track, with a lot of technical sections, and very physical. I can’t wait to be back here for the world championships next year.”
Alessandra Keller of Switzerland was 46 seconds back in second place. Puck Pieterse of the Netherlands took bronze.
There is one more World Cup race before the Olympics on July 7 in Les Gets, France.

Russia Gets a Taste of Isha
A gateway to inner dimensions opens up for Russia at Isha Yoga Center.
When Sadhguru recently visited Russia for the first time, he was surprised by a rather large reception of Russians who were waiting to greet him. He was received with not just a dose of hospitality but with much warmth and emotion. He later came to know that though they didn’t understand much English, they came to know about him through YouTube videos that had been translated into Russian .
So it was no surprise when an Inner Engineering Retreat was announced in Russian, there was an overwhelming response and the seats were fully booked within a month. For the first time, a group of 30 Russians will be traveling to Isha Yoga Center to attend this program, which will be offered with Russian translation. A portion of this group will stay on for the Surya Kriya program from 8-10 January, which will also have Russian translation.
Some of these retreat participants had an opportunity to meet Sadhguru during his visit to Moscow. Even as they were preparing to come for the program and visit the ashram, attending the satsang at the Indian Embassy in Moscow and having a chance to ask their questions directly to Sadhguru had a remarkable impact on them.
Here is what one of the future retreat participants had to say about meeting Sadhguru in Moscow last month:
"Sadhguru came into my life just absolutely by himself in September 2017, and touched me to the very root of my being. I was looking for it over a long period of time, trying different things, but I didn't have an idea that something like this can happen basically without me looking for it or trying to find it. It just appeared from the outside and changed my life in many aspects already. The news about Sadhguru's visit to Russia has added one more fantastic situation — I had a chance to meet Sadhguru in person, and listen to a public talk, even assist in some way, and this really had a huge impact on me.
As I understood from my previous experience, having high expectations, especially in the spiritual realm, is not the best way to approach it. Therefore, I don't have many expectations from my upcoming visit to India, but I know that whatever comes my way will be the right thing, and I will try to give sufficient attention to allow any situation, place or person to interact with me exactly the right way."
Based on the tremendous interest from the general public during Sadhguru’s visit to Russia and a huge demand for Isha Yoga Programs, more programs with Russian translation will be offered at the Isha Yoga Center in the near future. With these, a new spiritual gateway has opened wide for the Russians at the foot of the Velliangiri Mountains , where they can explore the inner dimensions of the microcosm called the human being.
