Aromas of black cherry, poultry herbs, tobacco, leather, black licorice. Palate is more fruit forward- lots of black cherry, some baking spice notes. Not super complex, lighter bodied, easy drinking. Delicious, even if not terribly interesting

Deep ruby color. Spicy, fun and fresh on the nose, with jammy raspberries and strawberries, with rose petals, spicy pepper and paprika, tar and some leather tones. Juicy and ripe on the palate with raspberries and red cherries, with dusty tannins and medium acidity. There’s a lot of really fun secondary flavors here, lie charcoal, barbecue sauce, tar, tobacco, and these underlying mineral and smashed rock essences. Juicy and delicious but sporting complexity as well. This would be a delicious barbecue wine or a way to convert casual wine drinkers into Sicily fans.

sallier de la tour nero d'avola 2020

Sallier de La Tour Nero d’Avola 2020

$ 20.00 $ 16.00

Down south in Sicily, two iconic names in winemaking have been joined together by marriage for over three generations. The Sallier de La Tour family have been Princes of Camporeale since the 1800’s, and built their great winery back in 1909 on top of the highest hill on the property.

They have been intertwined with arguably the top winemaking family in Sicily, the Tasca d’Almeritas since 1956 when Paolo Sallier de la Tour married Costanza. Eventually the two families decided that Filiberto Sallier de la Tour, Paolo’s son, would start making estate wines and experiment with different varietals, both native and non-native. In the end, Filiberto came to the conclusion that he suspected all along – nothing would compare to the Nero d’Avola.

Nowadays, the two families work in sync to create really special wines. It’s really a beautiful partnership. The Sallier de la Tour family handle the day to day, and the Tasca family help in the cellar, and with new sustainability initiatives.

Coming off saline-rich soils, it retains incredible natural acidity even in the Southern Italian sun. This has everything you want in a good Sicilian Red. It’s bright and vibrant but with some depth and chewier notes and even some spicier components that come in towards the end.

Winemaker Pascal Sirat consistently puts out some of the best value Bordeaux in the region but he may have outdone himself in what was a stellar 2019 vintage throughout the region. Just south of Pomerol, the vines at Panchille borrow deep in the soil. The resulting wines are ripe but fresh, with an aromatic complexity and stony finish usually reserved for wine twice the price. Daniel Boulud tells me it’s been the hottest bottle of wine at Bar Boulud for over a month, so I figured I’d better hurry up and secure my allocation! Don’t miss it.

#3  Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of 2021

96 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 95 Points, Wine Spectator

We are one of the very few folks who have Wine Spectator’s #3 Wine of the Year. This is definitely not one to miss. The 2016 vintage showcases this prized vineyard in all its glory; notes of wild black fruit, thyme, mint, eucalyptus, and bay are lifted and enjoyed with the polished tannin and mouthwatering freshness of this wine. Regarded as one of the best vintages in the last few decades,  the 2016 Martha’s Vineyard has been aged to perfection for immediate enjoyment at release and will continue to reward for the next 20+ years.

Belle Glos Las Alturas Vineyard Pinot Noir 2021

91 Points, Wine Enthusiast

Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.

Xavier Cotes Du Rhone 100% 2019

90 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

Xavier Vignon’s brand spanking new CDR 100% is a thing of beauty. It’s already got a blessing from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who described this wine as, “Full-bodied, concentrated and supple”.  This is a gorgeous and intricate blend that features all of the Southern Rhone appellations. This year, the blend was 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, 6% Terret Noir. Nobody can do it like the mad scientist, Xavier Vignon.

Tenuta Sallier de la Tour Nero d'Avola 2020

We have 5 in stock (Inventory is live and accurate)

Soil Type: The vineyards thrive in the Monreale area, where clay and sand soils create a stage reminiscent of the classic film "The Godfather," set in Sicily, providing the perfect backdrop for the Nero d'Avola vines to flourish in saline-rich conditions and maintain their acidity amidst the heat.

Elevation & Aspect: Positioned at 350 meters above sea level, the vineyards benefit from a diurnal temperature variation that enhances the grapes' acidity and flavor complexity, much like the dynamic range of a captivating symphony.

Grape Varieties: Dedicated solely to Nero d'Avola, Sicily's flagship varietal thrives here, yielding concentrated and flavorful grapes. The low yields ensure each bottle is packed with the essence of Sicily's most celebrated grape.

Winemaking: The winemaking process is meticulous, starting with the selective picking of grapes, followed by malolactic fermentation in stainless-steel tanks. Aging is split between wood (30% in French oak barrels) and stainless steel (70%), a technique that harmonizes the youthful zest of the wine with the refined, complex notes of maturity.

Farming Practices: The estate's commitment to sustainability is certified by SOStain, reflecting a dedication to environmentally friendly viticulture that takes into account the health of air, water, soil, and the surrounding area.

Tasting Notes: This Nero d'Avola 2020 is expected to offer a symphony of fresh, fruity notes interwoven with elegant spices and a hint of licorice. The partial aging in oak barrels adds a layer of complexity, hinting at the wine's potential for grace with age.

Pairings: Ideal with robust dishes such as grilled meats, hearty pastas, and aged cheeses, this Nero d'Avola also complements the rich, savory flavors of Mediterranean cuisine, enhancing the dining experience like a well-chosen soundtrack enhances a film.

About the Producer: The Sallier de La Tour estate, intertwined with Sicily's rich viticultural heritage, is passionately managed by the Sallier de La Tour family and the Tasca d’Almerita team. Their shared commitment to sustainable practices and reverence for the land elevates their Nero d'Avola to a testament of Sicilian winemaking prowess.

The island of Sicily has been growing grapes and making wines for more than 2,000 years. Today there is a vibrant and exciting wine renaissance happening on the island. Crafting new styles of wine with ancient indigenous grape varieties is what makes this unique.

The Sallier De La Tour family moved to Sicily in the 18 th century and built a winery in 1909. Fast forward to 2008 when Filiberto joined with his cousin Alberto Tasca to start the new chapter in the winery's history. The wines are fresh, lush and full of character showcasing Sicily's terrior.

This fantastic Nero d' Avola starts out with aromas roasted coffee, licorice and dark cherries. Flavors of blackberry, plums, vanilla, spice and coconut coat the mouth in a velvety texture. The wine sees 12 months in French oak and a further four months bottle aged.

Pair with: grilled pork steaks, spice rubbed BBQ ribs, grilled tri tip sandwich or with some Pecorino cheese.

SALLIER DE LA TOUR

sallier de la tour nero d'avola 2020

ABOUT THE WINERY

Just outside the bustling epicenter of Palermo in Northwest Sicily lies the Alto Belice - a fascinating landscape and cultural crossroads.   It’s here that the Monte Jato archaeological park preserves important structures dating back to the Magna Graecia settlements.  The nearby town of Monreale is among the most evocative towns of the island and is famous for its magnificent medieval cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.   It’s also here that the Sallier de La Tour winery and estate has been located for over a century.

The Estate has belonged to the Sallier de La Tour family, Princes of Camporeale, since the mid-nineteenth century. Originally from the Piedmont region of Italy, the family moved to Sicily in the 18 th century.  They built the winery—La Monaca—in 1909, its name inspired by the highest hill found on the property, which is located just behind the Estate. In the 1940s, Paolo Sallier de La Tour increased the family’s interest in viticulture with a particular focus on native varietals Nero d’Avola and Inzolia. In 1956, Paolo Sallier de La Tour married Costanza Tasca d’Almerita, joining the two noble families together.

While viticulture had been a function of the estate for many years, Filiberto Sallier de La Tour, Paolo’s son, started experimenting with other varietals, most notably Syrah, which had been cultivated in the region for decades.  During this time, Filiberto also began making the first estate wines under the family’s name, releasing the first commercially produced bottles labelled Sallier de La Tour in the early 2000s.  In 2008, Filiberto approached his cousin, Alberto Tasca, with the idea of joining Sallier de la Tour with the renowned Tasca d’Almerita family of wineries.  Having long been impressed with his cousin’s passion and the family’s deep ties to their land, Alberto agreed, and the two families started a new chapter in the estate’s history.

Today, the Estate is managed by Costanza Chirivino, a member of the Sallier de La Tour family, with the support of the Tasca d’Almerita team.  Costanza's energy and enthusiasm for her family's legacy is infectious, as is her knowledge of and affinity for the region.  In addition to managing the commercial aspects of the Estate, Alberto Tasca also included the Sallier de La Tour in the company’s sustainable initiatives.  This enables and ensures that the entire property is managed according to the tenants of SOStain, a sustainability program that requires third-party certification of the estate’s impact on air, water, soil, and surrounding territory, as well as environmental, economic, and social sustainability.
