What’s better than skiing or snowboarding on a fantastic field? Hitting the snow at multiple snow spots on the one trip. On an Intrepid group ski and snowboarding holiday, you can try up to five different snow fields on the same tour in Queenstown and beyond. With trips ranging from 5 to 12 days, there’s more than enough on-snow action to satisfy even the keenest skier.

Ski on private club fields

Your ski trip with Intrepid gives you access to local ‘untamed’ ski areas known as ski clubs or private fields with uncrowded slopes and no lift queues. If you want to soak up the old-school vibe of a traditional ski experience, these not-for-profit clubs are the perfect spot. Skiing and snowboarding at a private field also increases your chances of making fresh tracks on pristine powder snow.

Ski & snowboard FAQ

I am a beginner (or an expert). what trip should i choose.

We have options for beginner and intermediate/expert skiers and snowboarders alike. If you are a beginner then our Ski New Zealand: 7 Day South Island Snow Safari is for you. We throw in 2 beginner lessons free and can arrange more if you want them. It’s also a great option for more advanced snow lovers as well. If you are looking to get off groomed snow and away from the crowds to test your intermediate to advanced skills on untamed and uncrowded terrain, then our Ski New Zealand: 5 Day South Island Snow Explorer or 12 day Ski New Zealand: South Island Snow Odyssey is for you.

These are guided group trips, will I always be skiing or boarding in a group?

Alongside organising all the logistics of your trip our friendly local leaders will always join the group on the snow, but due to the nature of the terrain and our customers’ personal ski run preferences, they cannot be with everyone in the group at all times. Think of them as personal mentor you will always give you the best advice on where to go based on your abilities and preferences. While ‘sure’ is their default answer, they also always know when it is best to say ‘no’ too.

What happens if a mountain is shut?

In the mountains the weather has the final say, and your safety is our primary concern. We make amendments to our tour route on the rare occasions that any mountains are shut or have very poor conditions - going to a different mountain if at all possible.

I don’t want to bring my own gear. Can I hire it locally?

We get it, lugging your own gear around, especially when coming from overseas, can be a painful and expensive experience. So let us take care if it with our extensive range of high-quality rental gear options. We have packages available for ski and board hire (which includes skis/board, boots and poles), helmet hire or even winter snow clothing. Just let us know what you need and collect it on day one to keep with you for the entire trip – no more changing equipment as you go move between ski fields. Best of all, we’ll even return it for you at the end of your holiday.

Do I need special insurance?

Policies vary but we strongly recommend double checking with your insurer that they cover ‘adventure activities’ such as skiing and snowboarding, as many popular insurers have this as an optional extra rather than included. This is especially important if your itinerary includes off-piste skiing/boarding or heli-skiing.

Be inspired by these active adventures

GUIDED SKI TRIPS

In the sierra nevada, alaska and the european alps.

Fellow backcountry skiers and snowboarders, welcome to mecca. We know why you love to ski, because we are skiers too, to the core. We don’t just live in the Eastern Sierra and it happens to be a good place to backcountry ski. We live here because of the skiing. We are blessed with copious snowfall amounts, an incredibly long ski season, some of the greatest snow on Earth, and hands down the biggest and best ski terrain in the lower 48. So you can bet that if we aren’t skiing here, then we better be skiing somewhere else that’s really good.

Our trip design team at SMG has selected  ski destinations and itineraries  much like a chef chooses the ingredients for a gourmet meal. We start with only the best, and we carefully cultivate it into a potential experience of a lifetime. All of our ski programs may be customized to best suit your desires and abilities. You bring the passion, and we’ll show you the goods!

The Not to Miss Ski Tours of the Dolomites

  • Dolomites Tips
  • Experience Finder

What to do ?

When to go , type of travel.

Known for its breathtaking panoramic views, rich history, endless outdoor activities, and gourmet food fit for the gods, the Dolomite Mountains offer more: some of the best on-piste ski touring in the world. These incredible mountains feature 16 skiing tours through 12 different ski resorts, all lift-accessible on a single ski pass! The slopes are many – 1,200 kilometers or 746 miles of prepared pistes – and perfect for skiers of every skill level, offering something for everyone to enjoy.

On these ski tours, you can discover the mountains in comfort with lifts and cable cars. No hiking, no snowshoeing, no skinning – just skiing, pure and simple. These tours encompass the entire system of resorts and are the doorway to 450 lift systems in by far the largest skiing carousel world wide. No where else in the world can you access such a variety of lift-service ski tours covering so much ground.

Among these world-class ski tours, there are a few that shouldn’t be missed. Below is a list of some of our favourites, selected for their incredible skiing, breathtaking scenery, fascinating history, or savory cuisine, and, in many cases, all of the above!

The Sellaronda

This fantastic tour circumnavigates the Sella Massif, and is one of the most spectacular ski tours of the world. Considered somewhat of a “merry-go-round” for intermediate level skiers, this unique circular connection of lifts and runs was once the only way the ancient inhabitants of the Ladin villages could maintain a connection with each other. Nowadays it’s a modern day carousel that connects four Dolomite passes, four Ladin valleys (Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Val di Fassa, and Livinallongo), and three districts – you’ll have the opportunity to see more of the Dolomites in one day than many see on an entire trip!  The route can be done clockwise, by following the orange arrow signs, or counter-clockwise by following the green arrows. The Sellaronda is a relatively short tour can be easily done in one day, without ever having to remove your skis! With a length of just under 40 kilometers (25 miles), 26 of which are ski slopes (16 miles), but requiring approximately 2 hours of ski lift travel time and high elevations, it is recommended that the tour begin in the morning to ensure ample time for completion before lift service closes for the day.

The Great War Ski Tour

Known by a variety of names including the Great War Ski Tour, the Freedom Tour, the Giro della Grande Guerra, and the First World War Ski Tour, this tour takes skiers under the cliff walls of some of the most amazing Dolomites summits (Marmolada, Sella, Sassongher, Conturines, Fanis, Lagazuoi, Tofane, Cinque Torri [Five Towers], Nuvolao-Averau, Monte Pelmo, Civetta) and offers breathtaking panoramic views unmatched anywhere in the world. It also takes you around the Col di Lana, the epicenter of the battles between Austrian, German and Italian troops. A wonderful contrast is drawn between the pristine and silent slopes and the rich history of the various war-relics that can be found in this area. In between ski runs, let your experienced guide show you long-forgotten ditches, tunnels and bunkers that once served as shelter for Italian and Austrian soldiers – a veritable open-air museum of WWI history. And there is even a museum edifice to visit in Marmolada, The Museum of the Great War, the highest altitude museum in all of Europe! From here, skiers marvel at the incredible ice walls of the “Great Canyon” of the Serrai of Sottoguda, at the foot of Marmolada.

This tour requires the entire day; including time for lunch you'll be on the move for 7 to 8 hours covering 82.5 kilometers (51 miles), 31 kilometers (19 miles) of which, a good half of the day, are on skis. Lifts, ski busses, and a romantic horse-drawn sleigh ride round out the rest of the distance covered. And have we mentioned the skiing? The run from Lagazuoi to Armentarola and the Punta Rocca run (over the Marmolada glacier towards Malga Ciapela) are particularly spectacular.

A final stop: in addition to fantastic history and skiing, the area of this tour also boasts one of the most unique bars in the world.  Located on the Fertazza plateau, it’s fashioned completely from ice and is equipped with 100 different flavors of schnapps to sample!

Ski Tour Olympia

In 1956, the Winter Olympics were broadcast on television for the first time – EVER. And these Winter Olympics took place in the Dolomites’ Cortina d’Ampezzo, right on these very slopes:

  • Pista Olympia (Stratofana), the protagonist in the Downhill race
  • Pista Vitelli, the protagonist in the Giant Slalom
  • Pista "a" Col Druscié, the protagonist in the Slalom

The Ski Tour Olympia enables highly skilled skiers to experience those very same tracks. Not sure your skiing is up to Olympic calibre? The Olympia Tour offers a variety of slopes to suit skiers of differing skill levels, so skiers of all ability levels can participate in this historic and unique ski arena!

The Olympia tour can be tackled in either one or two days. En route you’ll cross over several summits including the Tofana di Rozes (3,120m / 10,236'), Monte Cristallo (3,221m / 10,568'), Monte Faloria (2,123m / 6,965'), and Forcella Staunies (3,221m / 10,567'), with many other unique features to explore and enjoy.

  • The Tofana and the run from Pomedes to Rumerlo offer lightning fast slopes amid unusual rock formations.
  • Stop in and see the Duca d’Aosta hut, which housed the Olympic flame before the opening ceremonies.
  • Advanced skiers will enjoy the challenge of the Vitelli slope, Stratondi, Canalone Franchetti, Tondi Normale and Slittone, with the ultimate run of the Canalone Staunies available for the most experienced skiers.

Throughout, great skiing fun is assured! All this skiing making you hungry? The healthy and tasty 'Olympia dish' served at some traditional huts along the itinerary is also worth trying.

Still haven’t met your adrenaline quota? Then don’t deny yourself the pleasure of just one more Olympic experience: a thrilling trip by Taxi Bob Sleigh on the trail of legendary Olympic champion Eugenio Monti who hails from Cortina!

Marmolada Ski Tour

The aptly named “Queen of the Dolomites”, this mountain boasts the highest peak of all the Dolomites, reaching a height of 3,342 meters (10,965'), and provides some of the most spectacular skiing experiences on earth. This tour begins in Arabba and moves on to Porta Vescovo, which offers mesmerizing views of the Marmolada Glacier. Next, skiers continue on the Ornella run to Pescoi, over the ridge of Passo Padon, on through the Passo Fedaia and to Punta Rocca. An incredible tour, it covers over 1,300 meters (4,265') in elevation and offers an astonishing 12 kilometer-long (7.5 mile-long) run. The Marmolada Tour not only offers amazing ski adventures, but also provides some of the most beautiful views in the world.

Trevalli Ski Tour

Also known as a “Tour of Emotions”, this tour is set in such natural beauty that it often evokes strong feelings from those who partake. It begins at the famous Tre Valli ski resort and offers a tour of the villages of Moena, Lusia, Passo San Pellegrino and Falcade, where exciting views of the Dolomite peaks will follow one after another. You’ll travel through the natural park of Paneveggio, where there are several traditional wooden huts, chalets, and ski bars to stop and rest. Multiple fast chairlifts provide skiers with access to various peaks and runs, such as Col Margherita, from which there are incredible 360° panoramic views of the Civetta, the south side of the Marmolada, the mountain chain of the Catinaccio, and other well known summits. Ground travel between runs is free, in the form of a skibus.

The 1970 Gardena World Championship Tour

Located primarily in the Gröden Valley, this tour consists of some of the most amazing ski slopes in the world, and is the home of several 1970 World Champions which is how the tour got its name.

  • Karl Schranz became Giant Slalom World Champion on the very run where the tour now winds its way to Selva Gardena.
  • Annerösli Zryd, also bore the title of World Champion for conquering Dantecepies.
  • And Swiss Bernard Russi was also crowned champion in 1970 on the Saslong, one of the most popular runs for skiing enthusiasts on the Gardena tour.

In the afternoon sunshine the tour leads on to Col Raiser, and ends with 9 kilometer (5.6 mile) romantic run to Ortisei.

Alpe di Siusi – The Witches’ Tour

This unique tour has routes dating back to the 1600’s, when Castle Prösels was the setting of many witch trials.  History states that the majority of the mysterious supernatural events leading up to these trials happened on Alpe di Siusi.  There are seven “stations” to see during this tour, and a variety of activities such as the fun park, the witches’ humpback run, a witch’s chimney, (an obstacle course made of snow), and the witches’ park, containing life-size figurines.  This tour is certainly packed with fun for the whole family!

Santa Croce Ski Tour (Gourmet Tour)

Perhaps the best has been saved for last, as this tour offers the best of everything in the Dolomites.  Ski slopes that vary from easy to moderate offer enjoyment for families and skiers looking for a day of relaxation, enjoying the culture and natural beauty of the region.  Skiing is accompanied by a feast of local delicacies which are available along the whole route of the tour.  In fact, each family-owned refuge along the route is specially equipped with its own unique dish which can be enjoyed with a savory glass of local wine.  From Col Alto or Piz Sorega to Santa Croce, the entire tour can be made without removing your skis.  Skiers can stop, enjoy some delicious local cuisine and take in the breathtaking views of the area.

For ski enthusiasts, the Dolomites offers some of the best runs on earth, all amidst the backdrop of exquisite views and natural wonders.  These seven tours should be on every skier’s to-do list.

Still want more? Other ski tours in the Dolomites include:

  • Ladin Legends Ski Tour follows in the footsteps of where the traditional stories and fables of the Dolomites took place.
  • Nature Reserves Ski Tour where you’ll ski within two of the Dolomites most beautiful Nature Parks, Puez-Odle and Fanes-Sennes-Braies.
  • Ski Tour Panorama takes you to the summit of Sella Brunech (2,428m / 7,966'), where he panorama from here will leave you breathless and astonished: from the Rosengarten to the Sassolungo to the Marmolada.
  • On the King Laurin Ski Tour you’ll visit the Paolina hut with a panoramic view which is simply out of this world, looking over the kingdom of the legendary dwarf king who was proud of his Rosengarten.
  • Enjoy “a trip in the sunshine on skis” on the Meridiana Alternativ where you’ll follow the sunny slopes as you ski around Sesto Peak which acts as a veritable sundial!
  • The Magnifica Comunità is actually a series of three different tours that show off the sunny arena of the Magnificent Community of Fiemme/Obereggen: the Forest of the Violin, the actual forest from which the wood the Stradivari violins was harvested; the Fables and Stories tour which leads through a fantasy world of dwarfs, giants, and bewitched princesses; and the Coral Mountains/Latemar Marionettes tour which highlights the Dolomites geologic makeup of 270-year-old coral mountains within a sea of algae and fish, today known as the mineral “Dolomite.”
  • Ski Tour Wildlife offers some of the best opportunities for spotting winter wildlife in the Dolomites, including golden eagles and chamois (a native European goat-antelope species).
  • The Plose History Skiing Tour follows the trail of the early pioneers of skiing in the Dolomites, and visits some of the early establishments and shelters, including a monastery known for its outstanding wine cellar!

There’s always another tour or an unexplored run to discover skiing in the Dolomites!

  • Explore Our Trips

Alaska in the winter is a special time. It’s possibly the time I enjoy Alaska the most. And ski tours are a big part of why.

Skiing across the snow through the quiet boreal forest or across some treeless slope is a great way to get a sense of Alaska that very few people experience.

We can run these ski tours as camping trips, day trips or multi-day cabin-based trips. Set up a base in the cabin and enjoy the days skiing and exploring the terrain.

Perfect for beginners or advanced skiers.

Day trips or cabin-based multi-day ski tours are a fun Alaskan experience.

Come and have some snow fun with us this spring.

Come Ski Alaska

Cross country skiing trip in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.

Snowshoe and XC ski tour

Winter’s Coming. Enjoy it.

On a scale of 1 – 5, five being the most challenging, two hiking boots is at the easier end of the spectrum.

1 boot = basecamp/dayhike easy 2 boots = easier backpacking trip 3 boots = intermediate level trip 4 boots = intermediate to advanced backpacking 5 boots = ask yourself are you really ready for this?

Expect whatever level you think might best fit you to be one level LOWER on our scale. Hiking here in Alaska is generally a step or three above what you’ll find in the Lower 48 states.

Realize that backpacking is never “easy”. You’re carrying from 35-50+ pounds on your back day after day. You’ll be hiking for a number of hours each day (varies trip to trip, day to day), and that’s not “easy” for most people.

Easier section of a tougher backpacking route. Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.

That said, our “2 hiking boots”  level should meet the need for most novice backpackers, and are generally what I recommend for families with younger kids, etc as well. Terrain challenges aren’t usually a problem, and the walking is somewhat more orthodox. You won’t be traversing 1 mile of steep sidehill covered in slippery rocks, or snaking through dense thickets of alder and willow.

What people love about ski, snowboard & snow tours in europe.

We are not normally ones for guided holidays preferring to self explore. However, when this holiday arose we decided to give it a go. A planned holiday in 2021 for our 60th was prevented by COVID. Oh, how we are glad we did. This was the holiday of a lifetime made even better by the unbeatable Alain. From the moment we arrived at our first hotel to helping us checking in at the airport he was a gem. Feels like leaving a friend behind. Trips and tours were exceptional and organised by Alain in such a way to take away any stress or unanswered questions. And how many languages can he speak! In addition trips provided all the time you could want to self explore and discover for yourselves. This has been a dream and full credit to VOS. Already looking at Greenland! Thank you so much
Overall the tour was good. we paid to update our room as we wanted a view of the river. The hotel was very good, meals were excellent. We booked an ENGLISH speaking tour. Aurora our guide did speak english but because there were 34 of the 36 people in our group did not. there were 18 spanish and 17 french speaking only! So had no opportunity to converse with others on our tour. At times we felt left out and lonely. we were very disappointed with this aspect of the tour. Especially when it came to instructions with snow mobile, didn't get to hear any english, so my confidence was low and ended up stopping after a short while , and not driving snow mobile, but got in sleigh pulled by Instructor. The husky and reindeer rides were fantastic , the highlight of our trip. The farms were interesting and well kept. The 5 hrs dropped off at Santa Village was too long . we ended up finding our bus and sitting there for an hour or so. Would have nice to be given option of a shorted time. The thermal clothing at Safartica was poor. The items were very used and not at all comfortable. I only ended up using the overalls, and my own boots, balaclava, socks, scarf and mittens. I would not recommend them. Over all we had a great time , but unsure if we would recommend the tour with others.
Transfers were smooth and on time. Staff and Guide were very professional, courteous, friendly, and helpful. Accomodations good and clean. Equiptment was good. (Some of the layer-clothing was well-used.....in O.K. conditon, but COULD be upgraded for the sake of not looking so worn)

"Had the best time on this tour. This was my second tour around Europe and it wasn’t as fast paced as my first one which I really enjoyed. I came prepared to walk a lot after reading many of the other reviews but it wasn’t as bad as I had planned for - maybe because it was before the hot Summer months. Would recommend for families travelling together!

"I did a european Magic, contikitour with rhianna in 2023, from Londen to Londen. Her energie and positivety was something I notist inmediatly. We had a big group, she is Verry likekeble for and by everyone and she was in top of her game, I noticed. I was confused she looks to have al lot of experiance, because of professional attitude, a natural way of being with people with respect and making a good group energy. I loved working with her as a person and running The tour. I am So proud How she did it, The european Magic is a Very fast tour, Nine days, So The pace is high… She nailded it! Up and running with a smile and giving love to evereyone. I remember The last day in paris, we had to take another group back to Londen last minute in our coach, no problem quick shifting in gear by Rihanna and she took care of them..that went smooth… That whole tour went smooth happy people, because of a fantastic Tourmanager. One problem, it was to short, with Rihanna I wanted to have worked more! She is professional and a great person with Many colors! Grous who gets her as a tm are lucky! Rihanna you are The best to me! About Ski touring

Ski touring is skiing outside groomed ski slopes and in principle takes place in unprotected areas. Abroad, two terms “ski touring” and “backcountry skiing” are used (especially in the US). Touring skiing presents greater challenges and is also physically more demanding than classic skiing, but it offers a unique contact with nature and the possibility of discovering remote mountain areas.

Instead of chairlifts, cable cars and gondolas, we go skiing on our own. During the ascent, we use our skins, a piece of fabric that is placed on the ski and prevents slipping. On the descent, however, the skin is removed. Depending on the conditions and terrain, crampons are sometimes needed for the ascent, in which case touring skis are worn on the back.

Ski touring can be a daily activity, but you can also go on a multi-day adventure. Multi-day ski touring includes overnight stays in mountain huts, or even tents.

12 best family ski resorts in the US

BEAVER CREEK VILLAGE/ SUMMER HULL/THE POINTS GUY

Whether your child is a snowboarding teen used to shredding powder or a newbie headed to ski school for the very first time, many mountain resorts across the U.S. are perfect for a family ski trip .

Skiing can be a terrific family activity in winter , as the apres-ski scene provides just as much fun as time spent on the slopes. Many resorts also offer alternative snow-related activities — such as tubing, ice skating, snowshoeing and even sleigh rides — so the whole family can enjoy the mountain experience.

Related: Best travel credit cards

The best ski resorts for families are usually the ones that offer on- and near-mountain lodging, ski schools with a variety of programs, beginner- and intermediate-friendly terrain and some quality non-ski activities.

Ski and snowboard lessons can fill up well in advance, so if ski school — or even on-mountain child care — is a must-have for your vacation, double-check the options to ensure they fit your ski vacation goals. Just note that you most likely won't be able to book ski school until the fall, at the earliest.

Once you decide on the best resort for your family, price out lift tickets and pass options ahead of time. You may be surprised at how much more affordable it is to buy ski passes in advance rather than purchase individual lift tickets — even if you are only skiing for a day or two. Buying ski passes earlier than later will ensure you get the best pricing; they will only get more expensive as the year goes on.

Some mountains also offer kids-ski-free programs , which can help keep the trip cost down. Additionally, many ski resorts have capacity limits, so you'll want to make sure you purchase your tickets before arriving (or make advance reservations at select mountains).

With all these nuances in mind, here are some of our favorite ski resorts for the whole family.

ski tours are

Beaver Creek Resort, Colorado

Why beaver creek is a good ski resort for families.

This may be surprising for those who are only familiar with the mountain's luxury reputation, but Colorado's Beaver Creek perhaps offers some of the friendliest slopes for family ski trips. About a two-hour drive from Denver International Airport (DEN) or 30 minutes from Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) in Gypsum, this resort is relatively easy to reach, assuming you have good road conditions.

Beaver Creek has been upping its already solid family ski game even more lately, thanks in part to the relatively new, 250-acre, lift-served expansion called McCoy Park. This offers even more terrain for beginner and intermediate skiers and snowboarders; it also elevates the mountain experience with an additional 17 groomable trails, plus two more chairlifts.

Here, you'll also find the Beaver Creek Candy Cabin , which is a great addition to the Ice Cream Parlour at the top of the Haymeadow Express Gondola. At Red Buffalo Park's Cookie Cabin and at the bottom of the Centennial Express and Haymeadow Lift, you'll also be able to experience the mountain's famous 3 p.m. cookie time.

ski tours are

After a long day of skiing, you can enjoy ice skating in the village. On Thursday nights, kids and adults who are at least level four skiers can participate in a glow stick ski. For a unique experience, take an open-air, snowcat-led sleigh ride to Allie's Cabin , Zach's Cabin or Beano's Cabin — three different mountain-top dining options.

The mountain also ensures that teens are fully entertained. This past season, the new Hawk's Nest Cabin opened in Beaver Creek Village, where teens can enjoy the coolest underage club. There, those between the ages of 10 and 18 enjoy craft nonalcoholic beverages, music, interactive technology, arcade and table games, a ski simulator, lounge spots and more.

Lift tickets for Beaver Creek don't have to cost a ton if you plan in advance and lock in an Epic Pass of some sort.

Keystone Resort, Colorado

Why keystone is a good ski resort for families.

Out of all the great Colorado ski resorts (and there are plenty), Keystone is the hot spot for kids of all ages. There are the usual dog sledding, snow tubing, ice skating and sleigh ride activities, but the piece de resistance is the resort's kids programs and accommodations.

ski tours are

There are plenty of fun on-mountain experiences, such as snowcat skiing and night skiing (on weekends and holidays). Tykes should also like the famous Snow Fort. In fact, this past year, the mountain even had two snow forts to pick from: one up on Dercum Mountain and one in the Mountain House base area.

Additionally, the resort offers a ton of family conveniences, such as free preferred family parking for those with kids 12 and younger, as well as red wagons to help tow skis, boards or even tired kiddos.

This past season, Keystone added another 550 acres of diverse terrain among 16 new trails, bringing the total up to 3,500 acres. With so much terrain, your family can experience a wide range of trails, including the 3.5-mile-long Schoolmarm — a timeless run for the family to work on turns.

Best of all, kids 12 and younger ski free when staying at one of the resort's properties for two or more nights. (There are no blackout dates.)

Snowmass, Colorado

Why snowmass is a good ski resort for families.

Snowmass is one of the mountains in Colorado's swanky Aspen ski area, so you can check a high-end ski resort off your bucket list while entertaining the kids at the same time.

A bit less showy than its big sister Aspen, Snowmass notably includes the Treehouse Kids' Adventure Center, a licensed kids club for children between 8 weeks and 4 years old. Children at least 2.5 years old can also hit the slopes, as the mountain offers many ski school options.

ski tours are

On top of that, Snowmass allows kids to ski free all the way through age 6, which makes it a more affordable choice for a young family than most mountains; other areas typically start charging kids by the time they turn 4. For those 7 and up, know that the mountain participates in both the Ikon and Mountain Collective ski passes.

Other kid-friendly Snowmass activities include on-mountain snow tubing , alpine coasters , ice skating , snowshoeing tours and even an indoor climbing wall . During select dates throughout winter, Snowmass will offer a nighttime winter wonderland party called Ullr Nights filled with evening activities for families. This includes a gondola ride to Elk Camp, bonfires, tubing, alpine coaster rides, snow biking, s'mores and hot chocolate.

Related: Yes, you really can visit Aspen on a budget. Here's how

Copper Mountain, Colorado

Why copper mountain is a good ski resort for families.

If you are looking for a Colorado ski resort experience with lower prices than its neighbors, Copper is a great choice. This resort has family-friendly written all over it, and it offers an array of activities for all ages.

In addition to skiing in what are often prime snow conditions, you'll have the Rocky Mountain Coaster , plenty of snow tubing , ice skating on West Lake in Center Village and even daily complimentary ambassador ski tours .

Additionally, whenever there is a full moon, Copper Mountain will offer ambassador-guided Full Moon Snowshoe Tours in the evenings. For an off-mountain activity, the 19,400-square-foot Woodward Copper Barn serves as an indoor action sports facility, offering many unique activities at Copper Mountain.

For the past three years, Copper has also featured a Snow Maze , which we should see return for the 2024-2025 season as well. Near the base of the Super Bee lift in Copper's East Village, this maze is extremely fun for kids, as it's made entirely of snow.

ski tours are

This past season, visitors were able to experience the resort's brand-new mid-mountain lodge, Aerie. This 25,000-square-foot building offers more dining options and a beautiful 270-degree view. Best of all, the gondola unloads right at the lodge's deck.

Copper is also continuing to make improvements to its Western Territory Expansion. This area is on the far west side of the mountain and is designed to inspire beginner skiers, kids and families to connect with Copper's history and heritage. With new trails that have debuted over the past few years (including kid-friendly tree trails), guests will be able to experience 2,538 acres of skiable terrain.

Where to stay at Copper Mountain

ski tours are

Winter rates start at $161 per night. You can also use your Choice Privileges points to book a stay, though award pricing hasn't yet been set for the 2024-2025 season; however, this past winter cost 35,000 Choice Privileges points per night.

Deer Valley Resort, Utah

Why deer valley is a good ski resort for families.

When kids are getting their bearings and making big side-to-side turns on a slope, it can be easier to start on runs where you won't find any snowboarders.

At the ski-only Deer Valley Resort, there's a children's adventure area on the mountain with 14 pint-size trails allowing tots to practice new techniques. However, their favorite part will probably be the tiny cabin hidden in the woods. The mountain limits its ticket sales each day, which keeps crowds (and lift line waits) at a minimum.

ski tours are

If you are looking for a ski resort that can also entertain a non-skiing child, the Deer Valley Children's Center offers licensed full-day child care with many activities, as well as outdoor and indoor playgrounds. Children between 2 months and 12 years old can enjoy this facility.

Deer Valley has a fun approach to ski school that includes the Teen Escape for teens ages 13 to 17, the Adventure Club for kids ages 7 to 12, the Reindeer Club for 5- and 6-year-olds and the Bambi Club for 4-year-olds. For the younger kids, the class sizes are incredibly small, with just two to four kids in a class — depending on age.

Because Deer Valley participates in the Ikon Pass ski program, the more economical way to lock in lift tickets might be to opt for a pass instead of paying the window rates.

Northstar California Resort, California

Why northstar is a good ski resort for families.

California's Northstar Resort, along the California-Nevada border by Lake Tahoe, is excellent for families — especially due to the average 350 inches of annual snowfall. Here, families can ski together in the Kids Adventure Zone, where two mountain areas have blue trails safely tucked away from bigger, faster skiers and snowboarders.

Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, you can kick up your feet and unwind midday while enjoying a glass of apple cider (or a glass of bubbly for the adults) with the mountain's one-of-a-kind Tost tradition. Additionally, families can enjoy the apres-ski scene by cozying up around the fire pit or zipping around on ice skates while listening to live music. At other times, you can enjoy fireside s'mores and hot cocoa.

If cross-country skiing is your activity of choice, the Nordic Center offers nearly 22 miles of scenic trails for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and fat biking.

Smugglers' Notch Resort, Vermont

Why smugglers' notch is a good ski resort for families.

An uber kid-friendly ski resort, Smugglers' Notch focuses on the entire family experience. This is why it's known as "America's Family Resort."

Smuggs, as it's called by those who know and love it, offers an award-winning Snow Sport University. It starts lessons with little ones as young as 3 years old. Sir Henry's Learning and Fun Park has two "magic carpet rides" that gently guide new skiers to the top.

ski tours are

For those who already know how to ski and board, the mountain has everything they could want: 78 trails, eight lifts, the highest vertical drop in northern Vermont at 2,610 feet and more than 300 inches of natural snow each year. Multiple terrain parks and 1,000 acres for skiing and riding are also available.

For those staying at the resort, everything is a few steps away, and an on-demand shuttle will take you wherever you need to go.

Off the mountain, you'll also find a plethora of activities — both during the day and night. Activities include snowshoeing, tubing, cross-country skiing, swimming, ice skating, bingo and magic shows. You can also experience the updated Fun Zone 2.0 complex, which features a "Ninja Warrior" course, laser tag, miniature golf, an arcade, large inflatable slides and more spread across 26,000 square feet of indoor space.

Where to stay at Smugglers' Notch

ski tours are

Winter rates start at $289 per night.

Stowe, Vermont

Why stowe is a good ski resort for families.

Stowe has a world-class ski school and plenty of long, beautiful blue trails to keep your not-yet-expert skiers and snowboarders engaged. The relatively new Adventure Zone has continued to be a big hit; these low-angle, gladed areas are appropriate for anyone in the family looking for a fun experience skiing or boarding through the trees on Mount Mansfield.

After a great family day on the slopes, enjoy a free pre-dinner skate at the Spruce Peak outdoor ice rink , embark on a guided twilight snowshoe tour through the woods or enjoy indoor rock climbing at Stowe Rocks. If you're looking for a resort with a village atmosphere, this is one of the best you'll find in the Northeast.

ski tours are

The main issue with Stowe Mountain is its ticket prices compared to many other East Coast resorts. Luckily, the Epic Pass can save your family over the walk-up lift ticket rates. You could even look at Epic's Northeast Value Pass if you expect to only ski at East Coast mountains this winter.

Where to stay at Stowe

ski tours are

Winter rates start at $400 or 45,000 World of Hyatt points per night.

ski tours are

Winter rates start at $265 per night.

Jay Peak, Vermont

Why jay peak is a good ski resort for families.

People love Jay Peak thanks to its indoor water park , which is ideal for families who want to take a day off from skiing or have something to do after morning ski school. The Jay Peak Pump House features slides, a FlowRider surf simulator and an entire kids play area. Many lodging packages include water park access, or you can purchase a daypass. (We recommend purchasing in advance.)

ski tours are

Aside from the water park, there are two arcades , a climbing gym , an ice skating rink and a slopeside movie theater . Not all activities are available every day, so double-check ahead of time. Aim to make advance bookings where available.

Best of all, there's a surplus of ski-in, ski-out condo and hotel options, giving families the perfect opportunity to stay in accommodations that work best for their needs. For those with little ones — or even big ones — Jay Peak offers child care for children as young as 6 weeks old both during the day and in the evenings.

Where to stay at Jay Peak

ski tours are

Winter rates start at $300 per night.

TPG tip : You can also check to see if you like any of the on-mountain condo options that take Wyndham points through Vacasa .

Bretton Woods, New Hampshire

Why bretton woods is a good ski resort for families.

Just across the Vermont border is New Hampshire's answer to family-oriented skiing: Bretton Woods.

ski tours are

Home to the family-friendly Omni Mount Washington Resort , Bretton Woods features fat-tire snow biking trails, a 62-mile trail network for cross-country skiing, sleigh rides, snow tubing, canopy tours and an indoor-outdoor heated swimming pool (just for guests). The recently built Rosewood Lodge at the top of the mountain also gives skiers and riders that top-of-the-mountain lodge and luxury dining experience that you won't find at many other nearby mountains.

Unfortunately, unlike what you'll find at many other mountains, Bretton Woods only offers ski school on the weekends (Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and select holidays). If ski school is a must-have, just ensure the mountain has an option that fits your needs. However, we did find ski school was much more affordable here than those at many other resorts.

From the hotel's architecture to the incredible views of Mount Washington, it's no surprise that the resort is a top destination for families. With many fun activities for the entire family and more than 464 acres to ski , there should be no shortage of on-mountain family fun.

Mont-Tremblant Ski Resort, Quebec

Why mont-tremblant is a good ski resort for families.

In case you haven't found the perfect family ski resort for you this far into the list, we are cheating a little and including two near-to-the-U.S. family ski resort options in Canada.

At Mont-Tremblant, your family can experience the international skiing vibe without crossing the pond. This French-influenced getaway is just a couple of hours outside Montreal. Featuring 102 slopes and usually great snow conditions, Mont-Tremblant is one of the best ski experiences in North America, with the highest peak in the Laurentians region.

While older family members explore the high peaks of Mont-Tremblant, kids as young as 3 years old can enjoy practicing their turns at ski school . Or, if you happen to be visiting during spring break, Tremblant's Ski Week program will give you four full days with the same instructor.

ski tours are

Guests can explore a unique European-style pedestrian village directly at the mountain's base. The pedestrian village allows easy access from the front step of your hotel door to the bottom of the slopes. With its colorful buildings — including more than 75 shops, restaurants, bars and boutiques — there is plenty to do in any weather.

On a non-skiing day, grab the kids and hit the snow-covered trails ripe for fat biking, dune buggy rides, snowshoeing, ice fishing, sleigh rides and even ice climbing. Families will not want to miss the Brind'O Aquaclub water park, which offers four slides, indoor and outdoor hot tubs, 35 interactive water games and a revamped fitness room. There is also laser tag and a virtual reality arcade.

Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia

Why whistler is a good ski resort for families.

British Columbia's Whistler is another Canadian winter ski hot spot with a family-friendly focus. Your kids will love the pint-size ski experience at the resort's Enchanted Woods, which is usually clear of more experienced and faster skiers. Or, embark on the thrilling Bubly Tube Park .

ski tours are

In addition to Magic Castle and Tree Fort outdoor playlands at both Whistler and its sister mountain, Blackcomb, families will be entertained with the mountain's free Fire & Ice performances every Sunday night (a display of ski and snowboard skills). Families can also exchange their ski boots for ice skates and skate for free in Whistler Village; the area is chock-full of shops, restaurants and things to do in the after-ski hours.

Short Guide to Ski Touring in the Dolomites

Ski touring is a discipline that combines the best of both worlds: the thrill of downhill skiing and the serenity of backcountry exploration. Unlike traditional skiing, where you rely on lifts to get you up the mountain, ski touring allows you to ascend on your own power using specialized climbing skins attached to your skis. This opens up a new world of possibilities, letting you access untouched snow and secluded spots far from the crowded pistes.

What You’ll Need

  • Skis & Bindings : Touring-specific skis and bindings that allow uphill and downhill movement.
  • Climbing Skins : These are attached to the bottom of your skis for uphill traction.
  • Boots : Touring boots are designed for both skiing and walking.
  • Poles : Adjustable poles are useful for varying terrain.
  • Safety Gear : Avalanche transceiver, probe, and shovel are essential.
  • Backpack : For your essentials, including water, food, safety gear, and a first aid kit.
  • Ski Crampons:  They allow you to safely climb a terrain too steep for skis.

On our tours, you’ll have the opportunity to stay in a range of accommodations, from cozy mountain lodges to well-equipped hotels in the Dolomites. All of these places are chosen to offer you a comfortable stay, complete with all the amenities you might need after a day of skiing.

The Dolomites are easily accessible by various means including air, train, and car. The nearest airports are Venice, Verona, and Innsbruck, all well-connected to the Dolomite region.

The Dolomites experience cold winters with plenty of snow, making it ideal for skiing. However, weather can change rapidly, so it’s essential to be prepared for varying conditions.

We exclusively offer guided tours in the Dolomites to ensure the highest level of safety for our clients. Given the serious nature of ski touring and the potential risks, such as avalanches, we believe it’s crucial to have an experienced IFMGA-licensed guide leading the way. This approach allows us to tailor the experience to your skill level while prioritizing your safety, providing an enriching and secure adventure.

Chamonix - A cradle of ski mountaineering

Nestled in the heart of the French Alps, Chamonix has been a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts since the 18th century. The town is surrounded by iconic peaks like Mont Blanc, offering a diverse range of ski touring routes that cater to all levels of experience. From the emblematic Vallée Blanche to the classic Haute Route that stretches all the way to Zermatt, Chamonix is a snowy playground of otherworldly appeal.

But what makes Chamonix iconic is also the culture and history permeating every corner of the town. This is where the concept of mountain guiding was born, and it continues to be a hub for innovation and expertise in alpine sports. Whether you’re a seasoned freerider, splitboarder, or an alpine skier looking for your next challenge, Chamonix offers a range of options, complete with ski lifts to make your expedition easier.

EXPERT IFMGA GUIDES

Hassle-free, trusted by many, unbeatable support, things to know.

We offer an array of tours that cater to various skill levels. Whether you’re an alpine skier making a transition to off-piste skiing, an experienced ski tourer looking to explore new terrains, or a freeride enthusiast seeking the ultimate adrenaline rush, we’ve got you covered. It’s essential to note that a basic level of skiing proficiency and physical fitness is required for all our tours. Each tour comes with its own set of challenges, and we’re here to ensure you find the one that matches your skill and comfort level.

Your safety is our utmost priority. All our tours are guided by IFMGA-licensed professionals who have extensive experience navigating the unique challenges that Chamonix’s diverse terrains present. These guides are trained to make informed decisions under various conditions. We also provide essential safety gear, including avalanche transceivers and probes, to ensure you’re well-equipped for any situation. Additionally, we offer round-the-clock support to make sure your trip is not only exhilarating but also safe.

Preparation is key to enjoying your ski touring experience to the fullest. We strongly recommend engaging in regular cardiovascular exercises in the weeks leading up to your trip. For tours like the Haute Route, which involves high-altitude skiing over several days, it’s crucial to be in excellent physical shape. While we can tailor some things to your abilities, it’s important to realistically assess your own fitness and skill level before committing.

Our tours are generally designed with adults in mind. That said, teenagers with a reasonable level of fitness and skiing experience are also welcome. If you’re considering bringing younger family members, it’s best to reach out to us in advance so we can discuss and advise you on the matter. Ski touring comes with a set of hazards that we wouldn’t want to expose any children to.

Weather can be unpredictable, especially in mountainous regions like Chamonix. If you’re staying in Chamonix, we have the flexibility to adapt the day’s plan according to the weather conditions. For multi-day tours like the Haute Route, things can get a bit more complicated. We aim to adapt hut bookings and itineraries where possible, but it’s crucial to have some flexibility in your schedule.

While ski touring inherently comes with its set of risks, our primary role is to mitigate these risks as much as possible. Our IFMGA-licensed guides are trained to assess and manage potential hazards, making your tour considerably safer than going it alone. We also provide essential safety equipment for tours in avalanche-prone areas.

While bringing your own ski equipment is advisable for comfort and familiarity, we understand that logistical constraints might make this difficult. We offer rental options for essential skiing gear tailored to Chamonix’s unique terrains. Just let us know your needs in advance, and we’ll have everything set up for you.

Chamonix is a highly sought-after winter sports destination, and accommodations can fill up quickly. To secure your preferred lodging, we recommend booking at least a couple of months in advance. For the Haute Route, even more advanced planning is required due to limited hut availability.

Chamonix is easily accessible by various means, including air, train, and car. The nearest airports are Geneva, Lyon, and Turin, all of which offer convenient connections to Chamonix. From there, you can take a train or a short drive to reach your destination.

Chamonix experiences cold winters with abundant snowfall, making it a skier’s paradise. However, mountain weather can be quite volatile, so it’s essential to be prepared for a range of conditions, from sunny skies to sudden snowstorms.

We exclusively offer guided tours to ensure the highest level of safety and enjoyment for our clients. Given the complexities and potential risks associated with ski touring, such as avalanches, we believe it’s crucial to have an experienced guide leading the way. This allows us to adapt the tour to your skill level while prioritising your safety.

DOLOMITES SKI TOURS FOR SOLO SKIERS

A range of fully guided ski tours and solo ski holidays for women , are you a solo skier looking for a singles ski holiday .

Why WoW Ski Tours?

There are a hundred differing reasons why you may find yourself as a Solo Skier. Maybe you just fancy ‘going it alone’ and doing something bold or audacious. But like most of us in the ‘solo traveller’ boat, we sometimes need that extra bit of reassurance, that ‘JUST DO IT’, to get us to actually commit to the unknown. With that in mind, at WoW Ski Tours, we have created the ultimate handheld guided ski tour of the ‘much-mightier-than-you-can-possibly-imagine’ mighty Dolomites, specifically for the single lady skier, who still yearns to be part of a fun group dynamic.

From the moment you sign up for any of our Solo Ski Holidays, you’ll be part of something truly unique. As both your hosts and ski guides, we have a duty to ensure that absolutely every detail of your ski holiday is taken care of, so that your solo experience is easy and relaxed. A couple of weeks prior to your departure, our dedicated WhatsApp groups allow you to get to know your fellow skiers. You can break the ice, exchange banter, share ‘what to bring’ queries and travel plans. By the time you hop aboard your private transfer to your welcoming accommodation in La Villa, Alta Badia, you’ll realise you’re no longer a ‘solo’, but part of a blossoming group of Jolly Dollies, your ski buddies for the week, and with any luck, the beginning of a new set of ski pals.

The Dolomites are described as ‘the most beautiful mountain range in the world’, with more sunshine days than any other ski area in Europe. Our daily itineraries take in the vast, spectacular beauty of the 12 individual resorts comprising the Dolomiti Superski, each having its own distinct flavour and charm. Whether it is pistes or pizza, coffee or couloirs, gastronomic goodies, aperitivi and wines galore, at WoW, we use our detailed knowledge of these areas, gained from over 2 decades of skiing there, to guide you to World Cup Downhills, Hidden Valleys, Ice Gorges and Horse Drawn Ski Tows, experiences that you just won’t discover without us.

The magic ingredient in the success of our tours though, is ‘you’, the WoW Women who create the fun, respect and inclusiveness that evolves between our ladies throughout each week. You’ll never want to ski without WoW again.

Discovering the Dolomite Mountains has been our defining ‘WoW’ moment… why not make it yours?

I honestly can’t wait for the next opportunity to get back to Japow with Skilas. Being used to snowboarding in the Alps, I was a bit skeptical at first cause the mountains are relatively smaller but my word the powder is out of this world, I’m talking waist deep. Having someone that knew these mountains so well was well worth it… Skilas pretty much did the hardwork for me. He researched daily the weather forecast and powder alert for each resort in Hokkaido and we set out early in the morning and got the best powder that day had to offer. This dude will find new powder just when you thought you had exhausted the mountain. Can’t wait to get back to Japow – best snowboarding experience ever

Run after run of lift accessed deep snow and the ability of being able to make first tracks on the last run of the day is a testament of your knowledge of the resorts we visited. Skiing powder should not be so easy!

The joy was more than the guided skiing – just being in the beautiful gullies and the serenity of the wonderful tree glades added a real appreciation of the environment we were in. The vibrancy of Sapporo, the variety of the local food and bars and the visits to the traditional village Onsens made the trip a real cultural experience.

Thanks again to you and your team for a great time. I look forward to being back again next year.

My son and I spent a week with Silas and it was a grand time. Silas knows the ski mountains like the back of his hand. On the one day it did not snow, he still found knee deep fresh powder. The mountains may appear small, but Silas makes them ski big because of his intimate knowledge of the off piste areas. Everything about the trip was first class and I would highly recommend Skilas Japan to anyone. Silas is a wonderful guide as well as a great all around guy.

Skilas really did provide the best of all worlds. Reservation at comfy and well-appointed hotels, pick up every morning in the Skilas van, door to door to a different resort every day based on the inside scoop of where conditions would be best, different levels of skiers and snowboarder and everyone was able to join in, piste and off piste, gnarly and groomers. The freedom to do your own thing if you wanted, but the invitation to meet up for lunch or make plans to do something some evenings. Each day was fun and flexible with our van groups deciding together if we might stop off at onsen on the way home. Silas had plenty of advice and knew all the great runs as well as places to eat and dishes to order. I was a solo traveler and I made friends with other solo travelers. In my group there was also a couple, a family, and a father and son. All ages. Would really recommend. I had previously done a trip to Myoko Kogan with friends and the time that was wasted trying to figure it all out, plus the dud days we spent at one resort not knowing conditions would have been better elsewhere… Skilas’s expertise did save time and money in the end, and the convenience was priceless. When you factor in the time off work and the flights to Japan, it’s just not worth wasting time. Silas is a great guy, fantastic host, and the value for money is genuinely good, he didn’t inflate prices and went out of his way to please. As for the area, Sapporo rocks! I much preferred Sapporo to Tokyo, and the snow quality and variety of the terrain at the resort Skilas took us to was excellent.

Wow, Skilas – what can I say? It was a fantastic, unique experience visiting the smaller quieter resorts not used by the larger tour operators. Whilst places such as Kiroro, Kokusai and Sapporo Teine don’t look much on a piste map lift lines were non-existent and it often felt as if we had the whole mountain to ourselves. Your in-depth resort knowledge always found a seemingly unlimited supply of the deepest and lightest powder I’ve ever skied. The Teine gullies were a particular highlight that will stay with me for a long while. Also many thanks for all your hard work and organisation away from the slopes and your company around the Sapporo in the evening. All in all, a totally fabulous trip. 12 Lift Additions and Upgrades for Winter 2024-’25

Madison 8, big sky, mont..

Big Sky has been on a tear over the last half-dozen years when it comes to upgrading its lift network. Since 2021 alone, the southern Montana resort debuted its Swift Current 6, the fastest six-person lift in North America, with heated seats and a weather bubble, to boot. Then the new Lone Peak Tram was unveiled at the end of 2023, which increased capacity from 15 to 75 (but it will carry fewer riders in the winter) and decreased ride time to 3.6 minutes. And next season, Big Sky skiers get an upgrade to the old Six Shooter lift, called the Madison 8, which will be the resort’s third eight-person high-speed chairlift.

The new ride will boast a weatherproof bubble, heated seats, and a safety bar that lowers and locks automatically, and will decrease ride time from the old Six Shooter by 30 percent. Construction is slated to begin this summer.

Coach and Bitterroot Chairs, Bogus Basin, Idaho

Coach Chair alignment Bogus Basin

The southern Idaho ski area will replace two of its three oldest lifts this summer, and the result will double the capacity of the two chairlifts. The old Bitterroot chair is a slow double installed in the 1970s. It will be upgraded to a fixed-grip quad, and its top terminal will be realigned to unload closer to the Pioneer Lodge, allowing for a smoother skier experience. The 43-year-old Coach chair will also be replaced with a fixed-grip quad that will extend its vertical rise, double the uphill capacity, and relieve skier density. The bottom terminals at both lifts will feature RFID access. Construction begins this summer and both lifts are expected to be open for the start of the 2024-’25 season.

Broadway Chair, Hunter Mountain, N.Y.

It’s a two-fer at the Catskills’ Hunter Mountain as owner Vail Resorts plans to replace the Broadway Quad, which offers access from the base area, with a high-speed six-person chair. This will help dilute skier traffic from one of the resort’s main access points faster and more effectively. The old quad will then be moved to the beginner E Lift to replace the slow double chair.

Hudson Quad, Gore Mountain, N.Y.

old Hudson Chair Gore Mountain

Not only is Gore getting a new lift for next season, but a new base lodge to accompany it. The Hudson lift, which runs from the base of North Creek Ski Bowl, which is one of Gore’s two base areas, to the top of Little Gore Mountain, will be upgraded to a quad from a current triple. Also look for the historic North Creek Lodge, built in the early 1940s but burned down in a fire in 1999, to debut with over 18,000 square feet including skier amenities such as a new restaurant and two patios.

West Bowl Express, Sun Peaks, B.C.

The new lift for the Canadian Rockies resort will be a new addition rather than a replacement. The West Bowl Express will be erected in the West Bowl area of Mt. Tod and will serve terrain previously accessed by a T-Bar. The high-speed quad will increase access to the scenic West Bowl terrain, and while no new acreage will be added, there will be new trails and longer vertical on tap starting next winter.

Upper Juniper Chair, Lake Louise, Alb.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Lake Louise Ski Resort & Summer Gondola (@skilouise)

We’ll never complain about the addition of a heated bubble chair, especially in the Canadian Rockies. Lake Louise’s Upper Juniper Chair, the newest heated bubble, will start just below the terminus of the Lower Juniper Express chair and will improve access to the upper mountain’s open bowls and black diamond terrain.

Sublette Chair, Jackson Hole, Wyo.

The popular Sublette Quad, one of the resort’s biggest pain points, will be upgraded to a high-speed quad this summer. The new iteration of the base-to-summit Sublette will cut ride time in half from eight to four minutes. The lift will serve some of the resort’s most challenging terrain, including Alta Chutes and The Cirque, essentially making them lappable and vastly improving access.

Wildside, Summit at Snoqualmie, Wash.

Wildside is home to Summit at Snoqualmie’s favorite local stashes, a haven of fall-line descents and steep pitches that’s always been hard to get to. This summer, the ski area will change the alignment of the lift to make it easier to access both from the parking lot and skiing back down to it from the slopes (read: no more long, poling traverse). In addition, the current triple will be upgraded to a fixed-grip quad.

Wilbere Lift, Snowbird, Utah

Wilbere lift at Snowbird

A nostalgic upgrade for Snowbird, Wilbere, one of the resort’s original lifts from when it opened in 1971, will be upgraded from a double to a quad for next season. A new loading station with a conveyor belt system will be moved from Creek Road to the Creekside Base to make it easier to get to from the parking lots.

Timberline Express, Copper Mountain, Colo.

This lift replacement serves the Western Territory terrain, some of the resort’s best blue cruisers. The high-speed quad six-pack will take the place of the current high-speed quad and have a rider capacity of 3,000 skiers per hour. Construction begins this summer.

Multiple lifts, Powder Mountain, Utah

ski tours are

By now you’ve probably heard the news that Powder is moving to a semi-private model , and with that comes significant investment in the infrastructure by new resort CEO Reed Hastings. The plan is to replace two aging lifts and build two new ones. The new Lightning Ridge chair will run from the Timberline base to the top of Lightning Ridge and will serve terrain formerly accessed via snowcat. The second upgrade will replace the old, slow, Timberline Chair with a fixed-grip quad. Those two will both be open to the public. The new Raintree lift will run up Cobabe Canyon and only be open to resort homeowners. Finally, the slow, fixed-grip Paradise quad will be upgraded to a high-speed quad, which will cut ride time by over half.

Jersey Cream Express, Whistler Blackcomb, B.C.

This one’s been a couple of years in the making, but will finally become a reality in time for next season. The Jersey Cream Express, currently an older high-speed quad serving mostly mellow intermediate terrain, will be replaced with a high-speed six-pack. The resort will break ground this summer.

Headout Buys AI Startup Dabble to Boost Travel Experiences Search

Jesse Chase-Lubitz , Skift

May 31st, 2024 at 9:00 AM EDT

In a strategic acquisition, Headout looks to enhance its AI capabilities by integrating Dabble.

Jesse Chase-Lubitz

Headout , which runs an app to help travelers book experiences, said Friday it had acquired Dabble , a startup that helps companies use artificial intelligence (AI) more effectively.

Headout had already been using AI for content creation, fraud prevention, and price-setting. Its platform covers 125 cities worldwide and serves more than 27 million people. The company said it turned profitable in 2021 and that it raised more than $40 million in venture capital in 2022.

Dabble launched in 2021 and works with e-commerce sites like Amazon, Wayfair, Pottery Barn, and Etsy. It helps companies accelerate content creation, create better work pipelines, and build more accurate models for products. The company went through the Y Combinator startup program.

Headout’s co-founder and CEO, Varun Khona, said he couldn’t publicize how his company will use Dabble’s expertise just yet.

“We will have something meaningful to share later in the year as a big launch,” he said.

For now, Khona shared three big themes: personalization, immersive media, and creating new experiences “with AI at the center of it all.”

AI’s streamlining potential

Industry experts see potential for AI to help small travel-experience businesses bolster their operations.

“Experiences is the most diverse, most fragmented travel sector,” said Douglas Quinby, co-founder and CEO of Arival , adding that the vast majority of operators are small or micro businesses that have varying levels of technology adoption.

The industry has particularly high expectations of AI to help with discovery and recommendations, according to Quinby. “Travelers can be overwhelmed with choice. Viator alone offers more than 4,000 tours in Rome,” he said. “The hope is that smart AI tools could offer a better recommendation engine.”

Craig Everett, CEO of Holibob , which provides booking technology to online sellers of travel and tourism boards, said that AI can help customers navigate this fragmented and overwhelming landscape of options.

He added that Headout is focusing on providing customers with quality over quantity. “Rather than overwhelm customers with choice, they’ve smartly pre-curated what travelers see,” Everett said. “The next step, and something we’re working hard on, is building the relevancy on top of that product quality to even further help travelers narrow in on the perfect things for their trip.”
