Mini river cruises.

Mini river cruises typically last for four or five nights, although three-night sailings are sometimes available too. Typically, a four-night river cruise will give you three full days in which to explore three different European ports of call, although on some itineraries you may visit more than one destination per day. A short river cruise is a great way to explore several destinations during a short break or weekend away.

If you’re new to river cruising, a mini river cruise can be the perfect way to dip your toe in the water, so to speak, and see if a river cruise holiday is for you, without the commitment of a longer holiday. It’s also a great way to spend a few hours exploring new cities to see which ones you would like to return to for city breaks or holidays in the future. Make sure to take advantage of our  river cruise deals .

Mini Cruises In Europe

Best Day-Trip Boat Cruises on the Moselle River in Germany

The best sightseeing day-trip cruises on the Mosel River (Moselle) in Germany are from Cochem, Koblenz, Trier, and Bernkastel-Kues.

KD Moselprinz for Moselle River panorama cruises from Cochem in Germany

The meandering Moselle River ( Die Mosel ) is one of the most popular rivers for day-trip sightseeing cruises in Germany. Internationally less famous than the Rhine, many consider the Moselle Valley more beautiful and a more relaxed destination to visit. The Moselle cruise season is long with day-trip excursions and panorama cruises departing from Easter to October and also during the advent season over Christmas. Gebr. Kolb is the main cruise line on the Moselle with KD currently only having a presence in Cochem — buy KD tickets online . The area around Bernkastel-Kues is probably the most beautiful and best part of the Moselle for day cruises but many boats operate also from Cochem and Trier. Combining a bike ride, boat cruise, and wine tasting is a popular day-trip tour on the Mosel.

Cruising on the Moselle River in Germany

The Mosel (Moselle in French and English) flows from France (Epinal, Nancy, Metz), and forms the Luxembourg-German border (Schengen, Remich), before meandering through Germany towards its confluence with the Rhine River at Koblenz. Traditionally, it was a major transportation link for French mining and industrial products meaning water levels are controlled to make year-round cruising possible.

For pleasure cruises, the constantly meandering river with steep vineyards, picture-perfect villages, and castles is perfect for sightseeing but progress is slow. The Moselle valley is narrower than the Rhine with steeper slopes and more curves to make the landscape more interesting. Although the Loreley Valley of the Middle Rhine remains the most popular stretch of river for excursion cruises in Germany, many consider much of the Moselle more beautiful.

GetYourGuide

Moselle River Boat Cruises and Cruise Lines

Multiple-day cruises on the Moselle River are popular but less common than on for example the Rhine or the Danube Rivers. Day-trip excursion cruises usually operate within small regions, especially around Cochem, Bernkastel-Kues, and Trier where panorama cruises and excursions are possible. From Koblenz , riverboats mostly cruise up the Rhine rather than up the Mosel.

Gebr. Kolb operates most Mosel excursions and panorama cruises in Germany. The main departures are from Cochem, Bernkastel, and Trier. Köln-Düsseldorfer ( KD ), the largest operator of pleasure boats on the Rhine River , currently limits its activities on the Mosel to sightseeing panorama cruises in Cochem — easily booked online .

Moselle River Cruise Prices

Return tickets for Moselle River cruises are only marginally more expensive than one-way fares. On long cruises such as Cochem to Koblenz or Traben-Trarbach, the one-way fare is around €28 (return €39). Panorama cruises are usually around €13 for one-hour cruises or €20 for two-hour cruises. Children under 14 pay half the price.

On some cruises, two may cruise for half price on an exact birthday. Students usually receive some discount, seniors mostly not. Dogs usually go for free, bicycles may add €3-4 depending on the cruise. KD has a long list of special fares but these are more useful on Rhine cruises.

Tickets for the panorama cruise of KD in Cochem are easy to buy online (and usually a bit cheaper). However, for other cruises buy tickets from kiosks at major stops or directly on the boat. Tickets may be bought online too but for Kolb it is still a cumbersome process.

Trains are often not an option to return from a cruise on the Moselle River. Koblenz, Cochem, and Trier are linked by frequent trains but the railways are not in the river valley and many of the smaller towns are only sporadically reached by public transportation. Buses are rare at night.

Best Times to Cruise on the Mosel

Bruttig-Fankel on the Mosel in Autumn

Boat cruises are available most days on the Mosel from early April (or Easter if it falls in March) to late October. Weekends usually have more cruises while the lowest number of cruises are on Mondays. During the main season from May to September, cruises depart every day of the week. More interesting options, including biking and wine tastings , are also only available in the main season.

Longer cruises such as Cochem to Koblenz are usually done only once or twice a week while shorter cruises may depart several times per day. Cochem has the highest number of options, although cruising in the region between Bernkastel-Kues and Traben-Trarbach is probably the most spectacular.

The Moselle Valley in Germany is beautiful year-round but autumn, when the vines turn yellow and red, is probably the most beautiful time of the year to visit and cruise on the Mosel.

Cruises in winter are limited but some are available during the romantic Advent and Christmas market seasons, especially in Bernkastel and Trier. Don’t expect any cruises in January, February, or March.

Moselle Panorama Cruises in Cochem

Moselle River cruises are popular from Cochem on the Mosel in Germany

Cochem, where the beautiful Reichsburg (Imperial Castle) towers over the city and Moselle Valley, is one of the best Mosel towns for day trips and sightseeing riverboat cruises. Gebr. Kolb and Köln-Düsseldorfer (KD) both have several sightseeing panorama cruises per day. Kolb further has excursion tours from Cochem to many Moselle towns.

The panorama excursion cruises are usually an hour with up to 12 departures per day. These panorama cruises are very similar and the best choice is usually simply the next boat to depart. Prices, around €12 for the one-hour cruise, are the same for both cruise lines. Buy KD cruise tickets online or simply from the kiosk or when boarding.

Mosel Excursion Cruises from Cochem

Kolb offers a variety of excursion cruises from Cochem to other popular Moselle destinations. Cruises downriver to Koblenz or to visit Burg Eltz are classics but the views are better upriver from Cochem. These riverboats call frequently at stops along the route, where it is possible to join the cruise or to disembark for sightseeing.

The most frequent excursion on the Moselle from Cochem is to Beilstein (via Ernst , Bruttig, and Schleuse Frankel) — around an hour each way. This is the only routing on this part of the Moselle where it is possible to interrupt a cruise and continue with a later boat.

A few times per week, it is possible to cruise upriver from Cochem to Traben-Trarbach — around four hours each way. An alternative is a cruise from Zell to Cochem — three hours each way. Both cruises allow for some sightseeing at the destination before returning.

The classic cruise from Cochem to the confluence with the Rhine in Koblenz is done only on Fridays. Cruising time is around four hours each way with more than two hours allowed for sightseeing before turning back. Trains are an easy alternative to return to Cochem from Koblenz.

Boats also cruise several times per day from Cochem to Karden — from here, it is a two-hour hike to beautiful Burg Eltz .

The Goldstück often arrives from Alken while a fun combination is a bike ride and wine tasting .

Moselle River Cruises from Bernkastel-Kues

Summer night with cruise boats on the Moselle River in Bernkastel-Kues in Germany.

Beautiful, romantic Bernkastel-Kues is one of the most picturesque Moselle wine towns. It is a popular departure point for Mosel cruises but is also frequently the destination. Not only is Bernkastel-Kues a particularly beautiful town but the meandering Moselle is at its most beautiful in this region.

Popular excursion cruises connect Bernkastel-Kues and Traben-Trarbach several times per day. Although the flight distance between these two towns is only around 3 miles, the meandering river needs around 15 miles with cruises taking around 2 hours (with stops). Boats also frequently arrive in Bernkastel from Alf, Bully, Zell, Leiwen, Piesport, and Trier.

One-hour panorama cruises depart several times per day from Bernkastel from Easter to October. Panorama cruises are also offered in advent — the beautiful Christmas Weihnachtsmarkt in Bernkastel-Kues attracts visitors from many parts of Europe.

Moselle River Cruises from Trier

Trier, famous for its Roman monuments and as the birthplace of Karl Marx, is also a popular departure point from Moselle River cruises.

Panorama cruises — one or two hours — depart frequently. Seniors (60+) should check the times for Seniorenfahrten when a coffee and waffle add only €1 to the regular cruise price!

Excursion cruises from Trier go downriver to Bernkastel-Kues (over four hours each way) or upstream and into the Saar River to Saarburg (two hours).

Trier also has many Christmas markets and event cruises in winter.

Rhine River Cruises

Tauck's Rhine River cruises follow this romantic river on its winding journey through medieval towns, cathedrals, castles, and museums, with enchanting river landscapes along the way.

Rhine River Cruising

  • ITINERARIES
  • FEATURED TOURS

Welcome to the Rhine River

Flowing through six countries, the Rhine River cuts deeply through mountains, meandering between hillside castles and age-old winelands. This is Germany's landscape at its most dramatic, with spectacular views of forested hillsides alternating with craggy cliffs... idyllic villages appearing around each bend... and half-timbered houses and Gothic churches that appear as if plucked from a fairy tale world.

Heidelberg, germany, history's all around you in heidelberg.

In Heidelberg – Germany's oldest university town – narrow cobblestoned lanes, shops and pubs housed in 17th-century structures in the Altstadt are kept lively by the cadence of 21st-century student life. On the hillside above the city, visit the romantic ruins of Heidelberg Castle, celebrated in writing by many, including the German poet Goethe and American writer Mark Twain, who both spent time here. Twain wrote about the striking red sandstone ruins of Schloss Heidelberg in "A Tramp Abroad"; they were a magnificent residence for Bavarian royalty from the 13th to 18th centuries. The castle is an imposing ensemble of buildings, from different architectural periods, surrounding a central courtyard; from its terrace and gardens, the sweeping views impress along with the feel of more than 600 years of history.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Canals and more in amazing amsterdam.

Amsterdam is often called the "Venice of the North" because of its elaborate network of canals winding through a romantic historic center of cobbled streets and Dutch Renaissance architecture. A canal boat cruise reveals The Netherlands's historic capital from the inside (often with a slice of Dutch apple pie), as you glide along 17th-century waterways lined with trees, gabled merchant houses and vibrant urban life. During your visit to Amsterdam, Tauck also includes a tour of the Rijksmuseum, one of the world's most respected art museums, home to masterpieces of the Dutch Golden Age including Rembrandt's "Night Watch."

Köln, Germany

Exploring köln (cologne) on the river rhine.

One of Germany's oldest cities (founded in the 1st century AD), Köln (Cologne) was once a Roman provincial capital, and later a wealthy medieval trading port; the city was almost totally destroyed during World War II, but many of its architectural treasures have been restored – including the towering Kölner Dom (Cologne Cathedral), a twin-spired masterpiece of High Gothic architecture that is the centerpiece of the city. With Tauck, you'll visit this imposing cathedral, along with the nearby Roman Germanic Museum, housing extraordinary exhibits of archaelogical finds from the Köln region.

Jungfraujoch, Switzerland

Enjoy cocktails at the "top of europe" with an exclusive tauck reception at the jungfraujoch's ice palace.

As your mountain railway train ascends into the majestic Swiss Alps, you'll arrive at Kleine Scheidegg at the foot of the Eiger, then board a cogwheel train for the scenic climb to Europe's highest railway station, at the Jungfraujoch (perched at 11,333 feet above sea level). Here, at "the top of Europe," you'll find a restaurant, observatory, research station, a gallery of ice sculpture, and breathtaking views of the glacier-clad Bernese Alps, often called Switzerland's "jewel in the crown." And you'll enjoy a Tauck Exclusive... a private cocktail reception at the Ice Palace… taking time. of course, to savor the astounding views of the lofty peaks of the Eiger, Jungfrau and Mönch surrounding you!

The Rhinegau wine country

An exclusive evening at a rheingau wine estate overlooking the rhine.

The Rheingau ("Rhine district") is one of Germany's most important wine regions, where viticulture dates back to the time of Charlemagne (if not the Romans), and where many significant winemaking innovations have been developed over the years. As you cruise through the Rhine Valley and visit the region, you'll enjoy a Tauck Exclusive evening – featuring a special reception, dinner and entertainment – at a historic Rheingau wine estate perched in the mountains overlooking the Rhine, and surrounded by vineyards that have been producing local wines for centuries.

Featured River, Small Ship and Land Journeys

Inspired by the destination.

For 90+ years, the Tauck family has had a passion for sailing — aboard small ships and yachts at sea, riverboats along great inland waterways, and at home on the rivers and lakes of Connecticut and New York. When we began blending our land experience with our strong passion for cruising in our first European river cruise back in 1992, we knew that no "ordinary" river cruise experience would do for our guests. We wanted them to travel Europe's rivers in the same beyond-the-ordinary Tauck style they experienced on our land trips. With that in mind, we searched to find a company to partner with that would share our values and our commitment to "do the right thing" by our guests... and found it in another family-owned company, Scylla. Together, we crafted a river cruise experience that was ahead of its time and inspired by the destinations we explore.

River cruises in germany and switzerland reviews.

The cruise was beautiful and very scenic especially the loreley strip. The restaurant staff were extremely friendly and warm. Special mention of Ida, Kenan and Sugana . The rest of the crew were very accommodating too. The tour leader Jessica and Jordi was super and helpful although we were the only few English speakers she made us feel included. On the whole it was a very beautiful experience although the rooms are a bit old design and the boat is not a very new but the staff were phenomenal .
It was a great cruise. The food was amazing, the crew was really helpful, and the tours and tour guides were great. The only thing to imporve on if the WiFi which only worked half the time.
Very knowledgeable and very nice.

What travelers are saying

"A company's character is not determined by how it handles day to day operations, but how it handles a crisis. This company fails miserably when Acts of God happen! We are on what was supposed to be a Danube River Cruise from Prague to Budapest...we never sailed at all, even though Viking sailed for the last 3 days. Avalon chose to bus us everywhere. They didn't communicate well at all. Information was withheld and our cruise director, Helmut, would turn and walk away from guests if he didn't want to answer questions. This was my 3rd Globus/Avalon trip but it will be the last. They excel in bus trips but not river trips. They don't know how to handle weather issues."

The 10 best places to go on a river cruise in Europe

Jun 7, 2024 • 8 min read

Cruising down a quiet, traffic-free river, surrounded by scenic riverfront views is an ideal way to see Europe . You can sip your wine while watching picture-perfect scenery breeze past – taking in castles, medieval villages and fields of flowers.

By necessity, European riverboats are small and passenger numbers are often fewer than 200, making these cruises a far more social and intimate experience. There’s also plenty to do and see onshore, and with more frequent stops you can enjoy more onshore activities. Cruise lines are now also offering more immersive learning experiences such as cooking classes and home visits, or activities like bicycle trips and long hikes.

The hardest part is choosing where to go — which is why we've rounded up the 10 best places to go on a European river cruise.

River cruise boats float down a village-lined river in Germany.

1. Northern Rhine (Germany)

From gorgeous river meanders and noble German cities

The northern section of the Rhine features dramatic landscapes and a host of interesting towns. Cologne (Köln), Germany ’s fourth-largest city, offers numerous attractions starting with its famous cathedral, while Koblenz, at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers, is a park- and flower-filled delight. Heading south, the Rhine meanders between hillside castles and steep fields of wine-producing grapes. Idyllic villages appear around each bend, their half-timbered houses and Gothic steeples seemingly plucked from a fairy tale. Scarcely damaged during WWII, handsome Speyer is crowned by a magnificent Romanesque cathedral.

2. Southern Rhine (France, Germany & Switzerland)

Explore intriguing towns in this border land

The Southern Rhine forms the border between Germany and France before becoming Switzerland ’s northern frontier. Strasbourg is the perfect overture to all that is idiosyncratic about Alsace – walking a fine tightrope between France and Germany, between a medieval past and a progressive future. Further south, the Black Forest spills into Alsace in the German town of Breisach. Unsurprisingly, given its geographical and cultural proximity to France, the locals here have a passion for a good bottle of wine. Basel, at the juncture of the French, German and Swiss borders, is perhaps where Switzerland’s Franco-Germanic roots are most evident.

3. Rhône (France)

Indulge in gourmet experiences cruising the south of France

Commanding a strategic spot at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône Rivers, grand old Lyon is France’s gastronomic capital. Downstream, the Rhône forges past Vienne’s Roman ruins and the centuries-old Côtes du Rhône vineyards, opening to sunny vistas of fruit orchards, lavender fields and the distant Alps as it continues south. During the 14th century, the Provençal town of Avignon was the center of the Roman Catholic world. Its impressive legacy of ecclesiastical architecture most notably includes the soaring, World Heritage-listed Palais des Papes .

Sunset's golden light signs on the Italianite city of Passau and the Danube river.

4. Western Danube (Austria & Germany)

Romantic landscapes in the heart of Europe

The baroque streetscapes and imperial palaces set the stage for Vienna ’s artistic and musical masterpieces alongside its coffee-house culture and vibrant epicurean and design scenes. Moving into Germany, the Danube gently winds its way to the Italianate city of Passau . Top billing in eastern Bavaria goes to Regensburg, a former capital and one of Germany’s prettiest and liveliest cities. Nuremberg (Nürnberg), Bavaria’s second-largest city and the unofficial capital of Franconia, is an energetic place with a history that ranges from undeclared capital of the Holy Roman Empire to the trials that judged Nazi war crimes.

5. Eastern Danube (Hungary & Serbia)

Travel a cross-section of Europe’s less-touristed east

The two great cities of this stretch of the Danube are the capitals of Hungary and Serbia respectively. Budapest has something for everyone – from dramatic history and flamboyant architecture to healing thermal waters. Outspoken, adventurous, proud and audacious: Belgrade ("White City") has a gritty exuberance and eclectic architecture making it one of Europe’s most happening cities today. While it hurtles towards a brighter future, its past unfolds before your eyes: socialist blocks are squeezed between art nouveau masterpieces and remnants of the Habsburg legacy contrast with Ottoman relics.

Lush green vineyards line the banks of the Duoro.

6. Douro (Portugal)

See spectacular terraced vineyards, the home of port wine

The Douro region, home to port wine, is simply one of the most glorious spots on earth. The Douro Valley showcases steep terraced vineyards carved into mountains, granite bluffs, whitewashed quintas (estates) and 18th-century wine cellars that draw visitors from around the world. Humble-yet-opulent Porto entices with its higgledy-piggledy medieval center, divine food and wine, and charismatic locals. Its charms are as subtle as the nuances of an aged tawny port, best savored slowly.

7. Elbe (Czech Republic & Germany)

A little-cruised but picturesque stretch of Central Europe

Covering the Czech Republic and a thick slice of eastern Germany, Elbe cruises are under-the-radar options. Prague , not on the Elbe but usually included on river cruises, contends with cities like Budapest and Paris in terms of beauty. Its maze of cobbled lanes and hidden courtyards is perfect for the aimless wanderer. The classic view of Dresden from the Elbe’s northern bank takes in spires, towers and domes belonging to palaces, churches and stately buildings: hard to believe that the city was all but wiped off the map by Allied bombings in 1945. While the city of Wittenberg is first and foremost about Martin Luther, the monk who triggered the German Reformation in 1517.

The pedestrian Pont des Arts crosses the River Seine, linking the Palais du Louvre (shown) and the Institut de France

8. Seine (France)

Cruise out of Paris through northern France

Paris has a timeless familiarity, with instantly recognizable architectural icons, memorable cuisine and chic boutiques. Dining is a quintessential part of the Parisian experience, and its art repository is one of the best, showcasing priceless treasures in palatial museums. Don't miss Rouen is one of Normandy’s most engaging and historically rich destinations, with its soaring Gothic cathedral, beautifully restored medieval quarter, excellent museums and vibrant cultural life. At the mouth of the Seine, Le Havre is a love letter to modernism, evoking France’s postwar energy and optimism.

9. Main (Germany)

A seductive German river connecting to the Rhine and Danube

Rising in Franconia and joining the Rhine near Mainz, the Main (pronounced "mine") is the longest German-only river. From Bamberg to its confluence, it travels some 400km through locks and picturesque scenery, dotted with historic towns. Frankfurt ’s skyscrapers are quite a contrast to the picturesque towns that follow, though it too has a rather traditional and charming old town. Scenic Würzburg is renowned for its art, architecture and delicate wines. A disarmingly beautiful architectural masterpiece, Bamberg’s entire Altstadt is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

A river flows through lush farmland in Germany.

10. Moselle (Germany)

An intimate stretch of the wine-producing German region

Having traversed France and Luxembourg , the Moselle heads through Germany to meet its destiny with the Rhine at Koblenz. It’s a very pretty stretch of river flanked by vineyards, and makes for great leisurely cruising and exploration. With an astounding nine UNESCO World Heritage sites, gorgeous Trier shelters Germany’s finest ensemble of Roman monuments, and is enlivened by a characterful medieval center and large student population. Bernkastel-Kues are lovely twin settlements in the heart of wine country, while Cochem’s castle and pretty buildings make it a visual highlight of the Moselle .

How do I choose a route for a European river cruise?

The two major rivers for European cruises are the Rhine and the Danube. Together, they were once the northern boundary of the Roman Empire. Rhine cruises often run from Amsterdam to Basel, following the course of the river through Germany. Danube cruises start in southern Germany, wend their way through Bratislava, Slovakia; Linz and Vienna, Austria; and Belgrade, Serbia; then skirt the Bulgarian and Romanian border to reach the Black Sea.

While many first-time European river cruisers stick to these two rivers, there are many other options available. In Western Europe, you can cruise through the French countryside on the Rhône and Seine, or check out the vineyards of Portugal on the Douro.

Even on the same river, distinct routes can be offered. One company might zip up the Rhine, allowing you to see the highlights in a few days; another might take longer, exploring smaller places along the way and offering more time for onshore experiences. You'll need to decide whether you’d like to get a look at more destinations, or more of a feel for fewer places.

When is the best time to go on a European river cruise?

Cruises on European rivers tend to begin in the spring, around March, and go through to October. Some cruises, operating in areas where Christmas markets are a feature, run right through December but inclement weather or river flooding could put a dampener on plans. Winter cruises tend to focus on places where Christmas experiences are on offer. Shorter daylight hours mean you’ll see less scenery, but the charm of the festive season has its own appeal.

Choosing your season is very much a matter of personal preference, and there are pros and cons for each season. Summer cruises offer the most spectacular scenery, the longest daylight hours and the best weather, but the towns you visit will be far busier and you won’t be alone in port; in some smaller places, you may have to scramble across the decks of other boats to reach the shore.

Spring and autumn mean less time around the pool on the top deck, but quieter times ashore. Expect rains in spring, but also blooming flowers. Autumn is a great time to cruise the Douro, with grapes being picked and clement temperatures.

See the Amazing Gems: What to Expect at the Cruise Ports of Germany

Taking a river cruise is one of the best ways to explore new places, and when it comes to Germany, the experience is nothing short of magical. I have explored the many ports of calls on Viking River Cruises, including the Rhine, Danube, and Paris to the Swiss Alps. As a cruise lover, I found Germany’s ports to be incredibly charming, beautiful, and full of character. In this guide, I’ll share my experiences and what you can expect at some of the most wonderful cruise ports in Germany.

Berlin: The Heart of German Culture and History

Brandenburg gate: symbol of unity.

The Brandenburg Gate stands as an iconic symbol of Berlin’s tumultuous history and its eventual reunification. This neoclassical monument has witnessed numerous historical events and today serves as a powerful emblem of peace and unity.

Surrounding the gate are other notable landmarks like the Reichstag and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, enriching your visit with profound historical context.

East Side Gallery: Art on the Berlin Wall

The East Side Gallery is a unique and poignant open-air gallery that stretches along a remaining section of the Berlin Wall. Adorned with over 100 murals painted by artists from around the world, it serves as a canvas for freedom and expression.

Each mural tells a different story, reflecting the hopes, dreams, and struggles of a divided nation seeking unity.

Bernkastel: The Pearl of the Moselle Valley

A romantic setting.

Nestled between gently rolling hills, Bernkastel, often referred to as the “Pearl of the Moselle” Valley, offers a picturesque setting that feels like stepping into a romance novel. The medieval town square, with its half-timbered houses, skinny alleyways, and statues, is a sight to behold.

The medieval marketplace, the beautiful Fountain of St. Michael, and the 1608 Town Hall (Rathaus) are some highlights you won’t want to miss. Bernkastel has a sister town called Kues, so the city may be called Bernkastel-Kues. The bridge united the two in 1905.

Wine Tasting Extravaganza

Bernkastel is renowned for its wine scene, particularly sweet Riesling wines. We participated in Viking’s Bernkastel-Kues Wine Tasting tour, a delightful 2-hour experience at  Dr. Pauly Bergweiler .

Walking through cobblestone streets, we sampled fantastic Riesling wines, including my favorite, ice wine. It’s a must-try for wine enthusiasts.

Dining Delight

For a culinary experience, consider dining in town. Eddie and I enjoyed a traditional German meal at Gasthaus-Burkard , a cozy and tastefully appointed restaurant. The local cuisine paired perfectly with the region’s exquisite wines.

Cochem: A Fairy-Tale City

Reichsburg castle.

Cochem is like a scene from a fairy tale, with its 1,000-year-old Reichsburg Castle perched atop a steep hill. This iconic landmark offers stunning views and a glimpse into history. The lively Old Quarter and medieval town gate are perfect for leisurely strolls, shopping, and soaking up the enchanting atmosphere.

The downtown area includes the 15th-century St. Martin’s Church and the 17th-century Capuchin Monastery (now a cultural center).

This darling city was on my Paris to Swiss Alps Itinerary with Viking . Read more in this post.

Foodie Finds

Don’t miss the luscious pastries from Café Flair. Sitting outside with a crepe and a glass of green wine, a very young wine unique to the region, was one of the highlights of our visit. It’s a great way to unwind and enjoy the scenic beauty of Cochem.

Historic Mustard Mills & Wines

One of the unique experiences in Cochem is visiting the  Historic Mustard Mills , where we sampled some of the oldest mustards in the world. The city’s location on the picturesque Moselle River also makes it an excellent spot for tasting Riesling or Dornfelder wines.

Cologne: A Blend of History and Modernity

Cologne cathedral: a gothic masterpiece.

No visit to Cologne is complete without standing in awe of the Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom). This UNESCO World Heritage site towers majestically over the city, its twin spires piercing the sky.

The cathedral, built over 600 years ago, is a testament to Gothic architecture and dedication. Inside, the magnificent stained glass windows and the Shrine of the Three Kings add to the cathedral’s allure. Climb the 533 steps to the top for a panoramic view of the city—a reward worth the effort.

Hohenzollern Bridge: Love Locks and Scenic Views

Just a short walk from the cathedral lies the Hohenzollern Bridge. Famous for its thousands of love locks, this bridge offers romantic symbolism and stunning views of the Rhine River. Walk along the pedestrian pathway and feel the weight of countless love stories.

As evening falls, the bridge becomes a picturesque spot for photography, framing the cathedral against a backdrop of sunset hues.

Old Town (Altstadt): Quaint Streets and Local Brews

Venture into Cologne’s Old Town to experience its charm firsthand. Wander through narrow cobblestone streets lined with colorful buildings, each telling a story of the past. The area is bustling with vibrant shops, cozy cafes, and traditional breweries.

Stop by a local pub to taste Kölsch, the city’s signature beer, freshly brewed and served in small glasses.

Heidelberg: Romanticism and Academic Prestige

Heidelberg castle: ruins with a past.

Heidelberg Castle, perched on a hill overlooking the city, symbolizes romanticism and historical significance. These majestic ruins offer a fascinating exploration of Gothic and Renaissance architecture.

Stroll through the castle gardens, visit the famous Heidelberg Tun (the world’s largest wine barrel), and take sweeping views of the Neckar River and the old town below.

This was one of the places I went on my first Viking River Cruise, which was the Rhine. Read this post to see how it fared. Remembering My Rhine River Cruise

Philosopher’s Walk: Scenic Pathway with Inspiration

The Philosopher’s Walk (Philosophenweg) is a scenic path that has inspired countless poets and philosophers. Walking along, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of Heidelberg, the castle, and the lush surrounding landscape.

This tranquil pathway is perfect for contemplation and captures the essence of Heidelberg’s romantic spirit.

Old Bridge: A Historic Crossing

The Old Bridge (Alte Brücke) is an iconic stone bridge that spans the Neckar River, linking the old town with the eastern bank. Built in the 18th century, the bridge is adorned with statues and provides a picturesque link between the city’s historical and natural beauty.

One last treasure in Heidelberg is the popular Hard Rock Cafe, always a favorite for my family.

Koblenz: The Storybook City

A tale of two rivers.

Situated at the confluence of the Moselle and Rhine Rivers, Koblenz feels like a storybook come to life. With medieval churches, colorful flowers, and ancient market squares, the city is a delight to explore. Our guide provided fascinating insights into every attraction, making our visit even more memorable.

Pro Tip:  Sneakers are best for exploring Germany and its many cobblestone streets.

Ehrenbreitstein Fortress

The highlight of Koblenz for us was riding the cable car across the Rhine River to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. From here, you can see the Upper Middle Rhine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The equestrian statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I and the Basilica of St. Castor add to the city’s historical allure.

Hidden Gems

Look for the Basilica of St. Castor, the oldest building in Koblenz, dating back to 836. Don’t miss the light yellow building trimmed with orange near Germany Corner, featuring a particularly amusing cuckoo-clock. I won’t spoil the surprise for you, but it’s a delightful find that adds a bit of whimsy to your visit.

Mainz: The City of Gutenberg

The gutenberg museum.

Mainz, home to Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the famous Gutenberg Bibles, is a treasure trove of history. The Gutenberg Museum offers a fascinating look at printing technologies, including a replica of Gutenberg’s workshop and two of the most elaborately printed books of all time.

Mainz Cathedral

The Mainz Cathedral, a stunning 1,000-year-old structure, is a must-see. Inside, the walls are tombs of archbishops and other prominent German figures. The cathedral’s six tall towers are a landmark in Old Town, easily accessible on foot.

St. Stephen’s Church

One of the most intriguing attractions in Mainz is St. Stephen’s Church , known for Marc Chagall’s blue stained-glass windows depicting scenes from the Old Testament. Although the original structure from 990 AD was damaged in WWII, it was restored in 1973, adding the tranquil Chagall addition.

Passau: The City of Three Rivers

St. stephen’s cathedral: baroque grandeur.

Situated at the confluence of the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers, Passau boasts the stunning St. Stephen’s Cathedral . This baroque masterpiece is renowned for its magnificent interior and the world’s largest cathedral organ, with 17,974 pipes. Attend a concert to experience this sacred space’s powerful and ethereal sounds.

Veste Oberhaus: Medieval Fortress with a View

Perched high on a hill, Veste Oberhaus offers more than just a view. It offers a glimpse into Passau’s medieval past. This well-preserved fortress, dating back to 1219, stands as a testament to the rich history of the region. Now, it houses a museum showcasing regional history and art.

The journey to the fortress rewards visitors with breathtaking panoramic views of Passau and its river confluence—a perfect spot for photography and reflection.

Old Town: Riverside Charm and Historic Streets

Passau’s Old Town is a delightful maze of narrow streets and charming squares, each exuding historic character. Wander along the riverbanks, where pastel-colored buildings create a picturesque scene. The old town’s inviting atmosphere makes it an ideal place to unwind and soak in the local culture.

Architectural wonders of speyer cathedral.

One of Speyer’s most iconic landmarks is the magnificent Speyer Cathedral. Built around 1041, this  UNESCO World Heritage Site  boasts the largest Romanesque-columned hall crypt in Europe. The cathedral is also the final resting place for eight emperors, including some notable Holy Roman Emperors.

The architecture, with its lofty arches and intricate decor, is nothing short of spectacular.

Exploring Cathedral Square

Cathedral Square is a bustling hub where history and modernity meet. Wander through charming shop-lined streets, stopping at  Maximilian Cafebar  for an authentic German coffee experience. These may be the most tempting pastries and sweets of the entire European river cruise.

A Journey Through Technological History at Technic Museum Speyer

Just a short distance from the Cathedral, the  Technic Museum Speyer  offers an eclectic collection of historical and technological exhibits. You’ll find vintage automobiles, locomotives, historic fire engines, musical organs, and machines inside.

Outside, explore the Boeing 757 plane, Space Shuttle Buran, houseboat, and submarine. This museum is a fascinating stop for all ages, offering a tangible glimpse into technological advancements over the years.

Trier: A Historical Treasure Trove in the Moselle Valley

Panoramic views and rococo splendor.

Trier, once the regional capital of the Holy Roman Empire, is a city brimming with historical richness. Begin your visit with a guided tour, such as those offered by Viking River Cruises, which provides breathtaking views from the town’s outskirts, offering a fascinating glimpse into the city’s past.

A highlight is the  Aula Palatina’s Electoral Palace , a stunning 4th-century pink Rococo palace. While visitors cannot enter the palace, the Baroque gardens and 18th-century sculptures are worth exploring.

The Romanesque Majesty of Trier Cathedral

One of Trier’s most impressive attractions is the Romanesque Cathedral, constructed under Helena, mother of Constantine the Great. The cathedral stands as a testament to ancient architectural prowess and religious significance.

Nearby, the Porta Nigra , an ancient sandstone city gate and UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers another glimpse into Trier’s storied past. It’s also an excellent spot for relaxing and soaking in the historic ambiance.

While in Trier, take time to explore its cultural landmarks, including the birthplace of Karl Marx. A towering statue of his likeness stands near the Porta Nigra. For history buffs, the Trier Imperial Baths, a vast 4th-century bathing complex, is a must-see.

On the culinary front, head to Ditsch eatery in the town center to savor a Pizza Spargel, a delicious handheld pizza/bagel hybrid featuring bacon, asparagus, and hollandaise. For fashion enthusiasts, Parfümerie Edith Lucke offers a splendid array of ladies’ fashion.

11 Top Things To Do In Bacharach Germany

B acharach, Germany which is located along the Rhine River brings you to a calmer, less busy, small town vibe location in Germany. Plus there are castles to explore, history, riverside dining and cruises!

We took the train here from Rothenburg on our 3 month backpacking trip around Europe with our 4 kids and arrived in Bacharach to spend 2 nights exploring Bacharach and St Goar.

Things To Do In Bacharach

When we first arrived it seemed like there wasn’t much to do in Bacharach but we quickly learned that wasn’t the case and we ended up with a fun day full of exploring this unique town.

Wernerkapelle

The Werner Chapel started being built in the 13th century. And has a history of being destroyed (it was left to decay in the 17th century), restored, and now remains as ruins for people to see. It has a gothic look to it and you are able to walk up the hill and into the ruins – there is not a roof on the structure.

There is also an inscription on the chapel that encourages brotherly contact between Christians and Jews.

Burg Stahleck

This is the large castle you see at the top of the hill in Bacharach. It is home to a youth hostel so you can’t tour the castle but you can go up and walk around the castle courtyard.

We took an interesting route up the side of the hill to get to the castle that had us using ropes to pull ourselves up the side of the hill. I am guessing there is an easier way to get there – but we had fun doing it this way!

This is a post tower at the top of a hill filled with vineyards. We were able to walk on the trail through the vineyards and straight up to the top of the tower.

No one was there. It was just us. At the top of the tower you have a gorgeous view out over the Rhine River.

Streets of Bacharach

Make sure you have time in your day to just walk the streets of Bacharach. The architecture, the streets, the history, it all makes for an enjoyable time walking through the streets and imagining what life was like here 100’s of years ago!

This is said to be the oldest building in town and was built in 1368. It definitely looks like the oldest house and looks like it tilts to the side a bit!

That being said it does look like a house out of a fairytail with its timbered structure, gables and turrets. It currently houses a restaurant with a limited menu. We didn’t go in but just checked it out form the street.

Steeger Tor

A wooden tower built in the second half of the 14th century. The tower use to be used to control the road and stands at the western corner of the city fortifications. It has its original roofing from the 14th century! Now it is a cool historical landmark to check out.

Weingut Karl Heidrich

We stopped in here for some wine tasting and it was super busy!! The streets weren’t busy at all and it must have been because everyone was here. Being that the wine trade is part of Bacharach’s history we knew we wanted to stop.

I got some wine to sample and Craig got a beer. Since it was so busy we knew food would take a while so we ended up getting the kids pizza at Bacharacher Pizza and Kebab Haus and they took it back to our place to eat. This made everyone happy!

River Cruise

We wanted to get out on the river so we went to the KD Ticket Office to figure out how we could do that. There we were able to buy one way tickets to ride the boat to St. Goar and we could take the train back (the train was faster so we figured we would be ready to just get home when we were done).

We got on the boat and off we went. As we were going down the Rhine River you can see castle after castle on the river shore. It was really cool to see all the different styles and designs. None of them were the same!

There was outside seating at the top of the boat and they even had a slide and small playground area for the kids. Our kids were a little too big for it but it didn’t stop them from going down the slide a few times.

I would highly recommend doing a river cruise when you visit Bacharach. It is one of those places that needs to be seen and enjoyed from the water. It is great how easy it was to walk up, buy a ticket and take the train home.

Things To Do In St Goar

We picked to stop in St Goar specifically to see the Rheinfels Castle ruins. When we got off the boat we also realized how cute of a town St Goar was! It was a bit more busy and lively compared to Bacharach.

Rheinfels Castle Ruins

They were gorgeous ruins and we were the only people in there exploring. They had stairs to go up to get an even better view of the river, and some underground rooms you could explore.

There was one room that just kept going and it was getting darker and darker! We freaked ourselves out and ran out of there.

We also stopped to try to get some fun and funny family pictures with the Castle ruins. Everything was so picturesque!!

You do have to pay to get into the castle but they have a family pass. They also offer tours – we didn’t do that and just went on our own. This meant we didn’t learn much about the history of the castle – so if you want to know more about the castle you should do the tour.

Note there are times when the castle is closed due to the bats that live there.

You can learn more about Rheinfels Castle here.

Rebstock Garden

After exploring the castle we stopped at Rebstock Garden which was a cute restaurant right on the river. We sat down to get some snacks and a few drinks. The kids walked down the walkway a bit and found a basketball court so they were happy!

It was fun to watch the river and see all of the Rhine River Cruise boats go by. That would be an awesome way to travel the Rhine River!

Streets of St Goar

The streets of St Goar were also very cute and there were a lot of little shops and ice cream places.

After visiting St Goar we decided if we came back we would probably stay there. I think it was because the river front was more accessible in St Goar and we really liked how they had the restaurant and walkway along the river.

Many people visit this area going from Koblenz and Mainz on a river cruise of the

upper middle Rhine Valley. We had heard that the stretch between Bacharach and St Goar was one of the most beautiful parts of the trip. We would have to agree that it was beautiful!

A multi night river cruise wasn’t in our plans this time around but visiting Bacharach and enjoying the cobblestone streets and the fairy tale looking timbered houses was a great way to see the Rhine Valley area.

The famous poet Victor Hugo calls Bacharach “the most beautiful and mysterious town in the world”.
