travel card prices west midlands

There are a variety of ticket types and ways to pay, depending on how often you travel and when.

Cash tickets

You can pay the driver as you board the bus. Please ensure you have a selection of coins ready, as not all operators can give change.

You can buy a single ticket if you are making just one journey. Single fares are currently capped at £2.00 for adults ( some services are excluded )

If you are making more than three bus journeys during the course of the day, it will be more cost effective to buy a day ticket. The nBus ticket allows unlimited bus travel on all bus operators’ services all day for £4.50.

Contactless Payment

Contactless payments are available on all buses within the West Midlands area. You can use a contactless bank card, or an NFC-enabled smartphone with a payment app setup, eg mobile banking, Google Pay or Apple Pay.

Before tapping your card/device on the reader, tell the driver which ticket you require, then tap when prompted to do so.

If you’re planning on travelling with the same operator, you can of course just tap your card/device without requesting a ticket, to take advantage of ‘Tap And Cap’ fares.

Tap And Cap does not work ‘cross-operator’ yet, you will need to use a Swift Go card instead (see below) or request a paper day ticket.

SWIFT Pay As You Go

The SWIFT Pay As You Go (PAYG) card is a smartcard that acts as an ‘electronic wallet’ that you can use to buy single and day tickets, so you never need to hunt around for the right change again. Top it up with credit, and you can use it to buy bus and tram tickets, as well as pay for parking at some Park And Ride sites. You can also share this card with others.

The SWIFT Go card is a smartcard that works like a contactless bank card, meaning you don’t need to buy a specific ticket, you can just “Tap And Go” on any bus operator’s service within the West Midlands, and you can also use it on trams. You can either top it up with credit, or link it to a bank card, and your fares are capped at 1, 3 or 7 day rates.

Smartphone Apps

NX Bus, Diamond, Arriva and Stagecoach all have their own apps, with which you can buy “M-tickets”, which can be stored on your smartphone and scanned under the QR reader as you board.

If using a purchased M-ticket on another operator’s service, you may need to just show the screen to the driver if the QR code is not scannable.

Season Tickets/Passes

For passengers who use the bus regularly, you can make further savings on the cost of travel by purchasing a seasonal ticket, which is valid for a week, month or even year.

If you regularly make 7 single journeys a week, or are buying at least 3 day tickets a week, a weekly pass will work out cheaper for you, and a monthly pass will save you more.

Season tickets paid for by direct debit will also see a cost saving. The monthly nBus pass costs £55 per month, and allows unlimited bus travel all day on any West Midlands operator’s services for less than £2 a day.*

* £55 per month x 12 months, divided by 364 usable days (no Christmas Day services) = £1.81 a day

Children up to the age of 5 travel free when accompanied by an adult.

Children between the ages of 5 and 15 pay reduced fares.

If you are aged 16 or over, you must pay the full adult fare. Students aged between 16-18 can however buy child-rate tickets with a 16-18 photocard , which can be obtained from the TfWM website.

Ticket Inspection

Please keep your printed ticket as you may be asked to present it to ticket inspectors or other bus operator’s member of staff. If you paid via contactless ‘tap and go’ where no ticket is issued, the inspector will ask to see your payment card number or device ID. You must have a valid ticket or pass in order to travel on buses, and you will be liable to pay a ‘penalty fare’ if you are caught.

West Midlands bus prices set to rise, TfWM announces - see how much fares will increase here

The increased fees will come into play soon, and some tickets could increase again at the turn of the year.

travel card prices west midlands

Transport for West Midlands has today announced a hike in prices for bus travel across the region, and the higher fees will begin in just a couple of weeks.

travel card prices west midlands

Fares for day and season bus tickets are set to rise by an average of six per cent at the end of June as the industry 'struggles to meet the ongoing challenges of rising costs'.

TfWM said the decision will see the nbus day ticket rise to £4.80 - an increase of 30p - and the four week fare rise from £60 to £64, in a decision agreed by all bus operators in the Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) area.

But according to the transport authority, which is part of the West Midlands Combined Authority , the new fares continue to 'offer great value to passengers' noting that they remain lower than Liverpool and Greater Manchester.

The single fare remains set at £2 and has been capped under a funding agreement with the Department for Transport - but only until the end of 2024.

A spokesperson for the TfWM, said: "The increase ensures that the region’s bus network remains operating at current levels while an ongoing review, launched by TfWM last year, looks at the long-term sustainability of bus services. The review will be reported back to the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) Board next month."

They went on to say that bus operators are under acute financial pressures due to steep rises in the cost of fuel, maintenance and labour over recent years and stubborn passenger numbers which remain at around 90% of pre-Covid 19 levels.

TfWM, which is part of the WMCA, is already pumping around £50 million a year into the bus network to support essential services, avoid more substantial fare increases or service reductions.

Pete Bond, director of integrated transport services with TfWM, said: “Despite many challenges we have worked with bus operators since the pandemic to keep fare rises to an absolute minimum.

“And even though they are rising, fares remain great value for the many people who rely on buses day in and day out.

“At the same time we are working on plans to secure the long-term future of our bus network and will announce the results of the review in the coming weeks.”

They finished by noting that by using the Bus Service Improvement Plan funding, the region has already implemented a ‘bonfire of bus tickets’ by securing a uniform fare structure across all private operators, meaning passengers no longer pay extra to use services run by multiple companies. It has also funded new Transport Safety Officers who are out on patrol to keep passengers safe, deter crime and tackle anti-social behaviour.

Further investment has been directed at improving infrastructure including more bus lanes and priority junctions to improve reliability of services on key commuter routes, enhancing real time journey information and the introduction of hundreds of zero-emission electric buses through the Coventry All-Electric Bus City project.

Top questions our customers are asking us.

Are adult single ticket prices changing? No. Single adult tickets will continue to be £2 until the end of this year.

How do Tap & Cap contactless tickets work/Why can’t I use Tap & Cap on other operators' buses? The technology for Tap & Cap fares is only currently available on National Express buses, so customers can’t tap and have the fare capped on other operators’ buses.

Remember, the same card or device must be tapped every time for Tap & Cap to work. If you tap on a National Express bus, your fare will automatically be capped at the best price.

Customers who wish to receive the ‘Tap & Cap’ experience across all bus operators should use Swift Go . This automatically caps at the best price too and can also be used on the tram.

Why have the days that the capping starts and finishes changed? We have changed this from Monday to Sunday, to Sunday to Saturday, to simplify our system processes.

Why have you removed the 3 day Tap and Cap? We are simplifying the Tap and Cap process. 1 and 7 day are still available on the bus. 3 day capping will be available via Swift Go .

I pay by Direct Debit, when will my price change? If you pay by Direct Debit you will see the increase in your first payment after 30th June depending on when your normal pay date is. You will receive an email from us confirming the changes.

When will the term, student and child Direct Debit prices be changing? Term prices will be increasing from August and Direct Debit prices will be increasing from September - in time for the new academic year.

Can I still pay £1.50 before 9.30am with my free concessionary pass? Yes, the pre-9.30am ticket will still be available for free concessionary pass holders at £1.50. We also have 4 week tickets and monthly subscriptions available if you travel frequently before 9:30am.

What is an NX Outer Zone ticket? Tickets for any National Express bus service that travels to, from or between locations outside the nBus zone.

Tickets in this area are currently referred to as NX Extra.

Why is an NX Outer Zone ticket a different price? An outer zone ticket allows customers to travel over a larger area.

Coventry bus fares set to be hiked amid 'rising costs'

B us fares are being hiked across the West Midlands as operators struggle with the "ongoing challenges of rising costs". The higher prices will be brought in on day and season tickets from the end of June, rising by an average of 6%.

The nbus day ticket will rise by 30p to £4.80 and the four week fare will go up from £60 to £64, in a decision agreed by all bus operators in the Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) area. The single fare will remain at £2, capped under a funding agreement with the Department for Transport, "until at least the end of this year".

Transport for West Midlands, which is part of the West Midlands Combined Authority, says the new fares still "offer great value to passengers" and remain lower than Liverpool and Greater Manchester. It said bus operators are under "acute financial pressures" due to steep rises in the cost of fuel, maintenance and labour and passenger numbers, which remain at around 90% of pre-Covid levels.

TfWM says it is pumping around £50 million a year into the bus network to support essential services, avoid more substantial fare increases or service reductions.

"At the same time we are working on plans to secure the long-term future of our bus network and will announce the results of the review in the coming weeks."
