If you’re a fan of the Final Fantasy series, Kingdom Hearts, and the award-winning Nier Automata, then you’ll be glad to know that its developer created a café dedicated to them. The Square Enix Café has two branches in Tokyo — in Akihabara and Shinjuku. One of the dishes they serve is the limited-edition Sea Salt Ice Cream — in line with the Kingdom Hearts 3 release in January in 2019.

The rise of game consoles and mobile devices have rendered most arcade games obsolete, but not in this country. According to the Japan Amusement Machine and Marketing Association , there are more than 4,800 registered arcades across the country in over 9,000 locales.

Every type of arcade game can be found in Japan, but if you truly want to experience Japanese unique culture then you can “try” the pachinko slot machines which date back over 80-years. The goal of the game is to fire tiny balls into gates as this then triggers the release of more balls. An ExpatBets guide to playing pachinko explains that, unlike a regular slot machine, these arcade games don’t produce money. The winnings (in the form of the balls) can be exchanged for prizes. To avoid Japan’s gambling laws, one of the prizes is a TUC gold card which can be converted to cash at certain parlors. If you’ve ever played a Dragon Quest game, they operate similarly to Monster Casinos.

This destination, located in Nagasaki , is Japan’s premier video game museum. It features objects from various eras in gaming history, like consoles from the 1950’s, old arcades, the most recent gaming technologies, and tons of limited-edition paraphernalia that can only be found here. Video games have always been synonymous to Japan, and the Huis Ten Bosch Game Museum provides a good crash course for gamers and non-gamers alike.

Huis Ten Bosch Opening hours 9am – 9pm (it varies each day) ▶Get an e-ticket for 1-day passport

Last year, tech giant and game developer Sony built a four-level building (plus an actual park) smack in the middle of the Ginza district. It features some art exhibitions, and shops and restaurants will come and go. It will open until the end of September in 2021, and after that it will be closed and renovated for the bigger project which will be completed in 2025.

Ginza Sony Park 5 Chome-3-1 Ginza, Chuo City, Tokyo Opening hours 11am – 7pm

Though Nintendo is famous all over the world, they’re something of a national treasure in Japan. The company is so significant that the Japanese government uses characters like Mario to greet international visitors. Their headquarters are located in the heart of Kyoto. Though you won’t be able to get in since it’s staff-only, it’s enough of a treat to marvel at the structure from the outside.

Nintendo

In 2024, Nintendo Museum will open in Kyoto renovating the old factory in Uji City. The factory used to be a center of producing playing cards and maintenance for game consoles.  At the museum, Nintendo’s legendary products and games will be exhibited and the details will soon to be announced.

Akihabara

This list wouldn’t be complete without something from Nintendo’s long-time rival, Sega. There are at least four of these massive towers in Akihabara, and they are one of the most visited establishments in the district. Inside you’ll find a number of Sega-licensed arcades, merchandise, and gifts from popular Japanese games.

If you are game lovers, you should play these various kinds of games like crane games, music video games and video games at Sega at least one time.

Inside Square Enix’s Tokyo HQ: the house that Final Fantasy built

Square Enix’s mission is to spread happiness across the globe with unforgettable experiences. The Japanese company has done that with the Final Fantasy series, which has sold more than 115 million copies worldwide since its debut on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987. The company released its latest installment, Final Fantasy XV , and I happened to be there in Tokyo for the Hollywood-style launch . I toured of the company’s headquarters in the urban jungle of the Shinjuku ward in Japan.

The headquarters is housed within multiple floors of a 25-story building. On the ground floor, I met public relations official Misa Tokunaga, and she took me into the $1.9 billion company’s lobby. We walked a short way to a waiting room with a bunch of plush toys from Square Enix’s Dragon Quest series, one of its most iconic role-playing brands.

Then I stepped into a motion capture studio with 68 cameras.

They were pointed at a stunt actor in a black mocap suit. Kazuyuki Ikumori, general manager and chief creative director at the company’s Visual Works division, told me through a translator how the company used the studio, which was built four years ago when the company moved into the latest headquarters. He said Square Enix did a lot of the motion capture for Final Fantasy XV .

The images from the actors are captured and immediately translated into data that can be used to animate 3D characters such as a medieval knight. I could see the knight move in real-time as the actor moved across the floor.

The director of the game can move around the actor with a handheld camera, and then use multiple angles in the finished product.

Ikumori said the system saves a lot of money in terms of art production, but it also allows the creators to be more productive and creative, because they don’t have to lose a moment of time when they’re inspired to change or redo something. Ikumori has worked on games, such as Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy XV, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and Hitman Absolution. He has also worked on films, including Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within , and Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children . It was nice to get a little time with him.

After we toured the mocap studio, we headed upstairs. The hallways didn’t have as much art as I’ve seen in Western game studios. I entered the main floor, where pictures weren’t permitted. It was a vast area with hundreds of white desks. The windows looked out upon a spectacular view of Tokyo from more than 20 floors above ground. The desks were separated into various sections, but were not exactly cubicles. The walls between each desk were lower than what I’ve seen in other studios, and occasionally I saw desks with blinds over them so that an artist could see a monitor better.

The setup was made deliberately that way to encourage communication. There were small bulletin board barriers, but all of the several game teams on the floor shared the same general space. I saw Hajime Tabata, game director for Final Fantasy XV, sitting at a desk of his own. He runs Square Enix’s Business Division 2, but he had the same type of desk as everyone else on the floor.

It was the day after the big launch of Final Fantasy XV, but he was there at work, leading the team on its next project, which likely includes downloadable content (DLC) for the game. There were more vacancies among the desks than usual, since many people were taking time off. The Final Fantasy team took up the bulk of the floor, but it also had a lot of room for the Dragon Quest team. There were hundreds of people in the same space.

Above: Caught another fan.

We also went downstairs and saw more offices for other functions of the company. There were some glass offices for meeting rooms and leaders, but not nearly as many as I’ve seen in Western companies.

We also took the elevator up to the top floor where the cafeteria was. It wasn’t a huge space, but it had some pretty bamboo-like decorations. The cafe was decorated with plush toys and other souvenirs from Square Enix games. You could buy bentos for lunch and get all sorts of gourmet coffee, including a cup with art of a game character in the foam.

Then we went downstairs and walked to the other side of the building, where there was a smaller white egg-shaped building. This was the Square Enix Cafe, which offered a place to sit and eat for coffee and other snacks. It also featured a bunch of plush toys and other souvenirs for fans. And there was a museum-like room with a bunch of highly realistic game character toys, including several of the main characters of Final Fantasy XV. Square Enix is so good at making some of these toys that it makes a lot of them for other game publishers as well.

I walked out of the cafe and back to the streets of Tokyo. Here’s a photo gallery of Square Enix’s headquarters as well as images from the launch of Final Fantasy XV.

Its portfolio includes famous games such as: Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Hitman and Deus Ex. In 2014, the company opened a new european office in the London borough of Southwark, which was designed by Oktra .

“Oktra brought to life Square Enix’s view that work is an activity not a place and should support performance rather than presence. Its design pivots around two new-concept areas: a ‘Pret Zone’ and ‘live team’ workspace with a range of flexible and fixed desk alternatives focussed around activity based working. With 50% of its workforce now working flexibly, office zones were designed around the various daily activities people need – a mix of formal, informal and quiet zones, team areas or individual spaces. Already the new office has had a positive impact on communication and efficiency”, said Octra

The Coolest Things in Nintendo's American Headquarters (And One Uncool Thing)

Let's get the one uncool thing about Nintendo of America's headquarters out of the way first: They won't let visitors take pictures of the best parts of the building.

Related Content

You can't snap photos of the mural that shows the progression of the Mario, Donkey Kong, Link and Samus characters. You can't photograph the row of Nintendo arcade machines, nor the curiously-placed bronze Mario that stands on a pedestal in the middle of a rounded-off area on the ground floor that's flanked by unnecessary signs warning people not to take photos of it.

The signs are unnecessary, because when you walk into the headquarters of Nintendo of America in Redmond, Washington, you sign an electronic waiver in which you promise that you won't bring firearms, will keep any Nintendo secrets you happen to overhear to yourself and won't take unauthorized photos.

You can—and I did—capture three spots of the Nintendo HQ for your scrapbook. I'll show them to you, and let you know what cool stuff I can't show but did see during my one-hour tour of Nintendo's offices this week. And I'll explain how it put me out $1.14.

The Nintendo of America headquarters is in Redmond, Washington, surrounded by pine trees with mountains in distance and the ring of the many Microsoft buildings in the area all around. You feel like you're in Microsoft territory when you get there, as the roads are full of shuttle buses bearing the green Xbox swoosh and the jarring yet correct spelling of the word Connect on them.

Nintendo's footprint is smaller. They've had land here since the early 80s and knocked down their original headquarters a few years back to build a nicer, newer facility for the top management, licensing executives and game translators and writers who work here. No games are made in the HQ, but decisions affecting Nintendo's business throughout North and South America are.

The inside of the Nintendo HQ is full of signs that you're in a very Nintendo place. From the outside, the only giveaway is the company sign. But inside, past a two-story-high lobby that includes a Wii kiosk and a big wall screen running Nintendo commercials is Cafe Mario, the place where employees eat. It seats about 600 people, though a retractable wall opens the space up to the 900 or so total Redmond-based employees, including staff from HQ and the customer service building a couple hundred yards away. The retractable wall is covered in massive outlines of Super Mario fire flowers and Yoshi eggs.

The cafe looks out to a Wi-Fi-enabled patio, beyond which is Nintendo's Mario-Kart -themed parking garage. If only they'd let me park my rental there, but I'm told each floor has a color theme, some checkerboard patterns and a number drawn in a Mario Kart font. There aren't any item blocks on the roadway, though. No banana peels either.

Throughout the building there are cushioned benches shaped like d-pads. My tour guide told me that was not commissioned. It was a fortuitous find by whoever purchased furniture for the HQ. And it fits, given Nintendo's attachment to the d-pad, which they once patented and for which they won an arts and technology Emmy. I didn't realize you can win Emmys for d-pads, but the Emmy itself is part of a display case right near Cafe Mario in the HQ.

Nintendo is proud of how green their building is. It opened in May 2010 and received a Gold rating by the D.C.-based non-profit U.S. Green Building Council as part of that group's recognition of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED. That is the story about the Redmond headquarters that the Nintendo folks do want you to see and think of. They're proud of it. My tour guide showed me the big LEED Gold plaque in the lobby and walked me past many of the energy-saving design features. They've got a grand central walkway on each floor made of bamboo, a renewable resource. They've got special vents on the floors, which are raised 20-inches off the concrete floors. In that space are the buildings' wiring and vents, allowing for, Nintendo says, more efficient cooling and heating of the building.

There are daylight sensors near the windows that dim or brighten interior lights based on the amount of natural light coming in. There are heat and motion sensors in any of the HQ's many conference rooms. They won't turn the lights off on you if you're sitting still in there… unless you have a cold, cold heart.

And there's a living roof. That's the one thing I'd heard about the Redmond headquarters. You reach it via elevator or from a magnificent bamboo staircase leading up from the third floor (the third floor where I think Nintendo of America president works — I saw you down the hall, Reggie. That was me waving). The fourth floor is part conference room space and part walkable roof. That roof is alive, covered in some 75,000 square feet of Sedum, a ground-covering plant that is used on the headquarters, my Nintendo tour guide told me, to insulate the roof from the sun and to help capture rainwater as it is diverted into a tank nearby and filtered cleanly into nearby streams.

The biggest thrill for a Nintendo fan would probably be the headquarters' central themed Nintendo areas. When you're standing on the central bamboo walkway of a given floor you are both in the middle of the building and also within the nexus of four themed zones, one each for Mario, Yoshi, Wario and, I think, Donkey Kong. These sections help direct people where they're going, dividing areas of licensing from management from the super-secret Treehouse where Nintendo's newest games are being translated, localized and played (no, they wouldn't let me close to that.)

Conference rooms in the building are all named for Nintendo stuff. There's the Another Castle room, for example. The top floor is all Zelda conference rooms, including a Ganon room with magnificent views and what sounds like the most important meeting space in the building, the Master Sword. On the third floor, I checked out a sign for the Mario quadrant of the floor. It had a listing of Mario-themed conference rooms: Hookbill the Koopa, Shy Guy, Boo, Bullet Bill, Isle Delfino and Koopalings.

The silhouettes for the men's and ladies' room are also Nintendo-themed. I pegged the men's room one for Mario, but my guide convinced me it was Luigi. We discussed briefly if that made the men's room Luigi's Mansion. We were undecided about the ladies' room silhouette. It looked like Princess Peach to me, but maybe it was Daisy.

For all the Nintendo touches, the headquarters doesn't feel or look like a silly playhouse. It looks like an office, a roomy one with lots of young Nintendo employees moving about. But there's no Nintendo music playing, no goofiness. There are, though, lots of displays of Nintendo stuff, like near the licensing department, where a case of product includes everything from Guitar Hero guitars to the Big Brain Academy board game and Nintendogs backpacks.

The ground floor, behind the entrance desk, near Cafe Mario, is where the HQ most looks like a Nintendo museum—and a shop. There's a row of Nintendo arcade machines, many of them from before Nintendo made games for its own consoles. They're blocked off, so you can't play them, but the row includes their cabinet for Radar-Scope , the Donkey Kong one that followed, some Play-Choice 10 stand-up machines, a sit-down Donkey Kong Jr. , the old wire-frame Punch-Out and even a red two-player Vs. Dr. Mario machine.

($1.14 and two gift cards later... purchased at the store inside Nintendo's HQ)

Around the bend from the row of arcade units is the mysterious circular area that surrounds a bronze Mario that stands on a pedestal. I was told that spot is used for employee training. It's the spot marked with reminders not to take photos. On its periphery are display cases that are changed to reflect what Nintendo is promoting. Right now, the case is full of Zelda 25th Anniversary stuff, including an extraordinary over 6'-tall clothed statue of Link. The periphery also includes a wonderful one-story mural that is divided into four horizontal sections. Each shows the sprites and character models for one of four Nintendo icons. Mario get the top section, evolving from the blocky hero of Donkey Kong to modern, modeled figure of Super Mario Galaxy . Below him are similar visual evolutions of Donkey Kong, Link and Samus.

Across from the mural, inside the headquarters, is a Nintendo store. Of course you can buy stuff in the Nintendo offices. A kind soul who works there even gave me $50 in gift certificates which I transformed into Nintendo tchotchkes that's we'll give away some day. The establishment is called the Nintendo World Store, just like the one open to the public in New York City. They sell games, systems and a range of Nintendo-themed products from stuffed animals to bibs to Mario Kart race tracks. Most of that can be bought by the public, but I had my guide and a store employee point me to items they believe are Redmond-exclusive, the more corporate stuff: Mario golf balls and tees, Nintendo shot glasses. There were a lot of Nintendo workout clothes there too, but I skipped those. The total ran my $51.14, so leave it to Nintendo to take someone in for a free tour and get them to part with a buck and change. These people know how to sell.

I wasn't sure why Nintendo doesn't want people to see how, well, Nintendo-y their offices are. I guess they're keeping it a treat for their employees or discouraging stalkers who really have no hope of getting in there anyway. Words, mostly, will have to suffice. It's a cool space.

History of Square Enix

Square Enix’s history is quite fascinating – it’s come a long way since its beginnings in the early 1980s!

In 1983, Square Co., Ltd was founded in Tokyo, Japan by Masashi Miyamoto and Yasuhiro Fukushima. The company began by exploring origins, creating video games, and establishing a company culture of developing innovative and successful titles.

Square Co., Ltd was successful, and in 1986 they released their first hit video game, The Portopia Serial Murder Case. Two years later, they released the first of the Dragon Quest series, which went on to become one of the most successful role-playing game franchises in the world.

In 2003, Square Co., Ltd merged with their long-time rival, Enix Corporation, to form the company that we know today as Square Enix. This merger allowed the company to expand beyond the development of video games and into other areas such as films, anime, and manga. Square Enix has since become a leader in the industry, with their headquarters based in Shinjuku, Tokyo.

Square Enix continues to develop and release innovative titles, while also expanding its library of original works. The company’s success is a testament to the vision of its founders and the commitment to exploring origins, creating a vibrant culture of creativity, and continuing to push the boundaries of game design.
