I needed STA to resolve a difficult situation for a family member travelling abroad and the circumstances were urgent and complex. I cannot speak too highly of the service, and in particular Mark Dennett's calm professionalism and commitment to get it sorted out. It is heartwarming to find such authentic customer care and I am truly grateful.

Booked an amazing trip with one of their travel experts, Joe recently. His knowledge of products and services is second to none and he manages to get the best deals available. He persuaded me to book an organised trip through STA and I must say that his suggestion was totally the right way forward. An amazingly kind man. Would definitely bookwithJoe again.

Pretty good at organising a trip. But when you're out on your trip, and need help to possibly reschedule flights or need information about travel status', trying to get hold of STA is a nightmare. I had sent them countless emails about my travel status, and my health condition, but was struggling to get a response. In the end, my mother had to go in to sort it out for me because after 4 weeks of trying while I was away, I had given up. It was becoming frustrating.

STA Travel has collapsed tonight after the firm was unable to cope with the coronavirus pandemic.

The travel business is the latest to suffer as a result of the downturn in tourism around the globe.

The company's initials stood for 'Student Travel Australia' and specialised in long-haul flights to far-flung destinations for young people.

STA, founded in 1971, has had a presence in Manchester city centre for more than 35 years and there are currently two branches in the city centre, one on Deansgate and one on Oxford Road.

Many people in the region will have bought their first tickets to travel abroad from their friendly and knowledgeable staff over the years.

The company is believed to employ around 2,000 people worldwide.

But the agency’s Swiss parent company, Diethelm Keller Group, filed for insolvency on Thursday saying it was hoped individual businesses could continue trading.

In a statement it said: “Sales have not picked up as anticipated, due to consumer uncertainties, further restrictions and renewed lock-down measures, which are expected to largely continue into 2021. As a consequence, STA Travel Holding AG, is filing for insolvency."

However, tonight a statement appeared on the STA Travel website which read: "Due to the recent announcement that STA Travel UK has ceased trading, unfortunately our travel experts are unable to assist you at this time.

"Please be assured that if you had a previous booking with us, or hold a live booking, you will receive further communication in the coming days.

ABTA - the leading association of travel agents and tour operators - confirmed that STA Travel has ceased trading.

A statement posted on the ABTA website says: "We are sorry to inform you that STA Travel Limited ceased trading from 21 August 2020.

"STA Travel Limited traded from 50 locations around the UK."

ABTA has also issued advice for customers, many of whom have been seeking refunds for months.

They say: "The majority of holidays sold by STA Travel Limited were flight-inclusive packages and these were protected by the CAA’s ATOL scheme, as well as scheduled airline tickets under its IATA licence and as agent for the airline.

"STA Travel Limited also sold some packages which did not include flights and were protected by ABTA as well as holidays as an agent for other tour operators. "

I don't really like travel agents. I've been travelling a few times and never used one. I actually enjoy browsing around for the best deal for a flight, reading hotel and hostel reviews to make sure there are no cockroaches and making up the rest of the details when I get there. However, as far as travel agents go, STA isn't a particularly bad one. Rather than intimidating orange ladies with red neckerchiefs, this branch of STA usually has about four chilled out 20-something year old lads in checked shirts behind their desks. I've never seen the queues that Thomas describes but maybe this is just in the run-up to the university holidays. I went into this branch with a friend (who annoyingly pronounces it staaar travel), as she thought it would be the cheapest place to buy our tickets to NZ. Despite the friendly staff and fact that they apparently give discounts to students and under 26s, the prices they quoted for the flights to NZ alone were more expensive than flights I had found on the Quantas website which included 3 free stopovers. I've also been tempted to buy STA's travel insurance in the past but have always found better deals for my requirements elsewhere. As for volunteering, unless you fancy paying a grand to work for free, then you can find much cheaper (and some free) volunteering projects with companies such as Concordia. Only good if you are a student with no time and no imagination.

Sta travel is a hubbub of excited students planning their next jaunt. In those desperate few months before the summer things get a little mad and I recall my experience of waiting in a queue for upwards of an hour as a very frustrating experience. Couple this with me not actually going on holiday it made for quite the wind up. I'm trying to see the light with this place, it is student orientated they have lots of well sorted trips that can be booked to pretty much any corner of the world apart from maybe Afghanistan (the army careers office is further down the road) or maybe the poles. Yet again though these trips draw me into another pet hate apart from queuing, the gap year was for me about really plonking you in the middle of nowhere, no guides nothing. Then through your experiences, developing an interpretation of local culture and perhaps even a temporary role within the community; that's real travelling. In recent years more and more websites and travel stores have become gap year orientated creating series of frustrating package deals wrapped up as the real deal, go nurture lion cubs in the outback making a real difference £1200, go diving in some of the most beautiful reefs in the world in the name of conservation (aka a body to drag a measuring tape across the coral) £800 and teach English in Ethiopia amid the savannah grasslands (£900). In my opinion you may as well book yourself two weeks in Magaluf.

sta travel oxford

Want to plan a holiday but don't know how and when. You are surrounded by many 'why's and what's' and questions are creeping up with doubt in your mind. It's times like these that you will think, Hmm why not try that Sta Travel facing you everyday when you pass Oxford Road! In my opinion you can plan your own great trip just at home with good speed internet and not spend on any silly travel agent services! However if your trip plans to hit more than 6 destinations and you're planning on being a bag-packer, you might need Sta's assistance because then they're not bad at all!

"Star" or "S.T.A" ? Either way, STA markets for the Gap year adventures, round the world trips and life changing travels for students looking for the great escape. As the world's largest travel organisation for students and young people, STA claim to be the inspiration for adventurists and excitement seeking young ones. Plan your trip of a life time with one of the STA advisors. I accompanied one of my friends on her planning, enquiring and booking with various STA agents. They did their job, but A and C are gone and I'm here left behind. Too helpful and useful STA.

STA Travel is located on Oxford Road and handy for university students. It specialises in Student Travel and has many discounted rates if you are a current student. I used this branch of STA Travel to research a round the world trip. I didn't book it with them but I did like the service they provided. The staff were helpful and knowledgeable and are experienced student travellers themselves. The shop does get busy at times and you may have to wait before you can speak to an adviser. The travel shop also stocks various travel brochures that you can take away free of charge, great for doing some research!

Photo of Rebecca B.

I've never really seen the point of travel agents myself, I think if you have a computer, a brain and an internet connection you've pretty much got it sorted. That said, I've popped in here a few times because I heard STA can get cheaper flights for people under 26 and students. Whilst this is only half true (I haven't found a flight which is actually cheaper through STA) the staff in the branch were lovely and really helpful. Me and my boyfriend wanted to have a wander around Asia a few years ago and I went in and got loads of travel advice and some brochures which were really handy when planning routes and picking the kind of places to go. I'd say unless you're planning something so complicated you need professional help you should spend a few hours in front of the computer and save yourself the commission, but if you want a round the world ticket STA should be your first stop.

Photo of Qype User (Skinti…)

Great Student travel agency in Prime student area, Great discounted and affordable holidays- usually have promotional prices for different destinations throughout the year, good if you're planning a year out to go travelling, the staff are really helpful and discuss all your options with you. You can pay a deposit then pay the remainder in 30 days too, It can be busy just before the holidays start but there are chairs and you usually don't wait more than 10 minutes, they also keep you updated if any of the information changes e.g flight times, airport taxes. They even tell you if you can get cheaper flights from alternatives! Absolutely great!

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

sta travel oxford

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

sta travel oxford

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

sta travel oxford

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

sta travel oxford

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

sta travel oxford

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

sta travel oxford

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

sta travel oxford

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA
