THINGS TO DO

Places to visit, scandinavian tour packages from india 2024.

Norway and Sweden, the two kingdoms in the Scandinavian Peninsula, along with the kingdom of Denmark to the south-west are together referred to as Scandinavian countries. The three countries form a subregion in North Europe and though Finland is not part of it, in broader terms it is also sometimes included among the Scandinavian countries. A dream destination for people around the world.

Tourism Friendly.

All the four countries have a strong economy, high standard of lifestyle and highly organised societies. This makes the region very amiable for tourists who find everything in their Scandinavian holidays moving as per plans and schedules.

Clean cities, great Waterfronts.

The region is looked up to for their clean and low pollution cities, charming coasts, enticing waterfronts, cruises on the oceans, glaciers and snowy slopes and most prominently for their skiing activities. The waterfront promenade in Sweden leaves people sell bound and idling for hours together.

Stunning Landscapes.

Scandinavian countries are known for their dramatically beautiful sceneries, their stunning fjords and archipelagos.

Lofoten islands, the archipelago of islands in northern Norway, the Gothenburg archipelago of South Sweden are simply incredible while Finland coasts boast of world’s largest archipelago. The fiords of the Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site north of Bergen in Norway is breath-taking. The tranquil and secluded fiords of Denmark along the Baltic Sea coast have their own charm. Just a train ride from Oslo to Bergen leaves the travellers dumbstruck by the ravishing beauty of the region.

Midnight Sun.

The natural phenomenon of the Midnight sun during the summer season, when the sun never goes below the horizon, fascinates visitors from the rest of the world. They particularly choose summer just to experience it. Though the duration may differ in the northern parts and southern parts of a country, or from one country to another, it occurs throughout the region. In Finland, the entire summer has white nights.

Another natural phenomenon in the region that intrigues the world is the aurora borealis. A natural display of earth’s colourful lights on the sky, it is also known as northern lights or southern lights or polar lights. Each of the countries lay special claim to this wonder being most clearly visible from their country. The consensus is, the further north you go the better the visibility. Tromso and Lofoten in northern Norway and Abisko National Park in Sweden are said to be the best place to view them.

Let the northern light package tour from Flying Squirrel Holidays help you experience this wonderful phenomenon.

Museums and Parks.

There are amazing museums in all the big cities. The history of the infamous Vikings and their exploits is intriguing to many. Tourists flock to museums and castles and relics to make sense of it. There are Viking museums on the ships too.

There are amusement parks with iconic cartoon characters the children just adore.

Camping, trailing, hiking and exploring is well supported by very good infrastructure with huts and wooden trails and even sauna at campsites in some places. The hiking trails of Trolltunga are demanding but rewarded with sites to remember for life. Perhaps nowhere in the world except in Finland is there a concept of ‘Every Man’s Right’ which allows freedom to roam on natural terrain without permission even on private lands.

For the regular tourists, much of the beauty of the region can be savoured in and around the larger cities of Stockholm, Copenhagen, Oslo and Helsinki; smaller cities and towns of Geilo, Tromso, Narvik, Kiruna and Lulea and by cruises ferrying one town to another. Most of the other places are just a day-trip away.

For varied interests.

Whether you are planning a holiday for your family to scenic beauties of leisurely sea fronts and urban landmarks or you are planning to go on love-trip with your spouse on the beautiful cruise rides and picturesque ski resorts, Scandinavia is the place to be. Whether you are interested in arts, architecture and culture or you are hiking, camping and skiing person, you will love the plethora of awesome choices that you get in the Scandinavian region.

Scandinavia package holidays are ready for you at Flying Squirrel Holidays to take you to all those amazing places.

Norway has wonderfully diverse landscapes from rugged fiords to Arctic snow, archipelagos and coral reef, snow-clad hills with skiing slopes and pristine beaches. Hop-on hop-off cruises along the coasts make exploring the rugged fiords a pleasant journey.

The modern urban centre of Oslo, the capital city of Norway, is the art and culture hub and a beautiful mix of traditional Scandinavian design and modern impact. Bergan, a beautiful port city, is a gateway to the stunning fiords and to the cruises sailing the tourists through amazing landscapes. Oslo and Bergan are a definite part of Norway itinerary.

Other cities that attract visitors are Geilo for its ski resorts and for being the gateway to two popular national parks, Narvik for skiing and hiking and Tromso for being the gateway to arctic adventures.

We have a great plan of Norway tours from India which we can customise for you.

Sweden, an archipelago of 14 small islands, has a certain serenity to its beauty. Blue sky with very low-lying white clouds especially in the summer, over a series of wave-like low hills, take a bewitching grip once you are in Sweden. 85% of the people in Sweden live in cities occupying just 1.3% of its land. For the visitors, therefore, most of the interaction with the country takes place largely in and around its urban centres or a day trip or a ferry ride away.

Sweden’s cities are all spic and span clean. The technology adaption and the quality of life in the urban areas of Sweden is far advanced than even the UK and the USA. A happy surprise for the visitors.

Called the ‘loveliest city in the world’, Stockholm, is the capital city and the most populous city of Sweden. Spread over 14 lush green islands interconnected by bridges, the city is known as Beauty on Water. Admired by the world for its great fashion sense, its incomparable museums, beautiful parks and great architecture.

The coastal city of Lulea is known for its well-preserved wooden houses and a stone church from the 1400s and the town of Kiruna for its bell-tower church resembling traditional Sami huts are other urban places to visit.

Denmark is known in the world for the colourful history of their infamous Vikings, their title of being the happiest nation in the world and their unique attitude of ‘hygge’ meaning enjoying the simple things in life. The Danish Royal family, some of their royal houses that are open to the public and the Danish people’s love and reverence for their kings is the source of amused wonder for many visitors.

The historic castles, old towns, contemporary cities like Copenhagen and partially owned modern wonders like the Oresund Bridge are a major draw to Denmark. The amusement parks of its city and the various harbour cruises leaving its shore add charm to the ambience of its cities.

Denmark, Norway, Scandinavia holiday packages are ready for you at Flying Squirrel Holidays. Take it. You will love it.

The Country of a Thousand Lakes, Finland has one lake for every twenty-six persons. Surrounded by the beautiful wilderness of the arctic region, the country is one big chain of beautiful unbelievable sceneries.

The natural terrain is so revered by the people here that they have made free access to natural terrain a right open to everyone, even in privately-held properties. It is a country where you can travel back and forth across the arctic circle in a day trip.

Finland is a big attraction for architecture lovers too. From the classic old wooden churches to contemporary masterstrokes like the Finlandia Hall or Oodi Library, the country has many gems to showcase.

From Arctic adventure to camping, Finland has a variety of options for camping and hiking enthusiasts. Lapland, with its long curvy roads, enchanting marshlands and endless tree-tops with reindeer paying visits on the road, is the hikers' paradise. Camping trails are also well maintained with camping sites mostly located near beaches so campers can go swimming. Also unique are the sauna baths that are attached to most camps.

For the children, there are theme parks and amusement parks like Linnanmaki in Helsinki and Sarkanniemi in Tampere. Moomin-world characters are adored by children visiting the park which actually was the inspiration that led to the creation of Disney World.

There are so many places to go in Scandinavia. Take a look at our planned Scandinavian countries tour and get it customised for the places you would want to go.

From popular museums on Viking exploits in Stockholm to avant-garde art galleries in Oslo, there is so much for every taste. In Finland alone, there are 55 art galleries. If you are a connoisseur and in for a long stay, go buy a Museum Tickets that lets you in 300 museums around the country.

Go to Vigeland Museum and appreciate art, from the oversized expressionist sculptors of people in the nude to the popular ‘Angry Baby’.

What people love about Sweden Tours

This was a superb self-guided five day kayak/camping trip. The scenery is magnificent. We were novice paddlers and faced challenging conditions on two days (out of five). But the equipment provided was high quality and gave us the confidence to punch the envelope. The instruction and advice was effective and supportive. Such a memorable trip!
Great landscape, great equipment, great organization! I highly recommend the tour ?‍♀️
Amazing trip, I loved every second from howling with the wolves to watching long legged moose cross the road. Our guide Simon was so enthusiastic and knowledgeable, he made the trip !!

Wild Sweden

"This tour was wonderful! Our guides were very knowledgeable and friendly - and they kept us warm (we rented the recommended clothing, which was smart). Everything about the tour went very smoothly. There were six people in our group and we enjoyed getting to know each other. We visited with a Sami reindeer herding woman and got to hand feed some of her reindeer, we went on a dogsled ride, and we stayed a couple nights with a Sami man at his comfortable encampment. We skied across a frozen lake by his home, took a sauna, and rolled in the snow afterward. The Arctic is beautiful and different from what I'd envisioned. And we saw the Northern Lights on two nights - they are beautiful and awe-inspiring. It was the trip of a lifetime and my wife and I both loved it.

The Culture

For travellers planning out exciting tour packages in Sweden, the popularity of this country’s culture should be given a read, as part of the research process. Humility is the true essence of Sweden’s cultural makeup as the indigenous as well as the immigrant population believe in a harmonious co-existence. Swedish is the official language with a strong influence of Finnish, German, and Danish languages among the locals settled in the regions that share borders with the respective countries. Besides this, most Swedes are fluent in English as a majority of metropolitan cities are flourishing in a multi-ethnic atmosphere. Historically speaking, Swedes have been influential in forming cultural importance since the pre-historic era. Be it the Norsemen era or the Byzantine Empire, Sweden has had an integral part in developing authentic traditions in the whole of Northern Europe. Etiquette and formal behaviour are widely practised in modern Swedish cities, due to which public grievances or expression of anger isn’t a common sight in this humble nation. Celebrating art and sciences is taken very seriously in Sweden, which also hosts the Nobel Prize Ceremony every year in its capital city, Stockholm, for awarding exemplary contributions in several fields of study. In recent times, the cultural landscape of Sweden has evolved immensely with people from more than 150 nationalities migrating in various metropolitan cities of Sweden. Holiday packages which are planned by reputed travel companies, specialising in tours of Sweden are ideal for exploring this country’s culture. Looking up for Sweden’s unique packages online can be a good way to find out more about the nation.

Things to do in Sweden

Among the most popular tourist spots in Sweden, Vasa Museum tops the list in all travel packages in Sweden simply for taking the visitors for witnessing the Vasa Battleship out on display. Located in the bustling capital of Sweden, this museum’s popularity has seen more than twenty million visits since the time it was first opened in the 1960s.

While staying in Stockholm, tourists can be taken to one of Sweden’s oldest towns, Gamla Stan, for savouring in authentic Scandinavian architecture along the narrow streets. For a unique and chilling time (quite literally), staying at the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi is a must for tourists seeking travel packages of Sweden with thrilling activities to do. The entire hotel is re-built each winter season with icy water from Torne River, while in the summer time it is used as a recreational centre for canoeing, fishing, etc.

Abisko National Park

For exploring the exotic flora and fauna of Sweden, tour packages   can be taken to the Abisko National Park, which is situated very close to the Aurora Sky Station in Lapland.

Lund Cathedral

Lund Cathedral, another popular tourist destination, is situated in Skane, the southernmost province of Sweden. Considered the oldest Romanesque church of Sweden, this cathedral has carvings and pillars that depict mythical creatures from archaic stories.

Tasting the delicacies

Trying out Sweden’s mouth-watering delicacies such as Raggmunk, Knäckebröd, Pickled Herring, and Swedish pancakes should be a part of an ideal vacation in Sweden. Thus, touring in Sweden is an enriching journey which can transform the travellers’ entire outlook on life, just by exploring the wonders of this gorgeous country.

Best Time To Visit Sweden

Sweden owes the credit for its gorgeous coastline to the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Bothnia. Moreover, this North European nation forms the eastern side of the Scandinavian peninsula with fifteen per cent of its land lying in the Arctic Circle. Countries that share a maritime border with Sweden are Lithuania, Denmark, Germany, Russia, Latvia, and Estonia. However, its border with Norway is renowned for being the longest as well as the only undisturbed borderline between two countries in the whole world. Its climate is the most attractive characteristic for tourists planning out their Sweden tour packages as different regions with varying weather conditions can be a thrilling experience. For those visiting the northern parts of Sweden in their tour, the climate is known to be influenced by the Arctic, with winters prevailing for more than six months. While, in the southern part, winters merely last for two months and summers dominate the climate for four months. The Midnight Sun, Sweden’s very own natural phenomena, when the sun doesn’t set for consecutive days can be experienced during the month of June. For Polar Nights, the winter months of December and January are ideal for touring in Sweden to witness uninterrupted nights without a ray of sunshine. Additionally, the annual rainfall of the country doesn’t exceed 24 inches during summer months in southern Swedish districts. Preparing for these extremities prevalent in one country should, thus, be planned out by tourists taking cost-effective tour packages from India to Sweden by researching online weather-based websites and travel blogs.

Must do adventure.

The heart of Stockholm, Gamla Stan, and its cobblestone paved, disoriented lanes have witnessed different phases of history. From triumphant rulers to candlelit tiny cafes, Gamla Stan is the personification of history, nostalgia, and the timelessness of Sweden. A Sweden Tour cannot be complete without a visit to this quieter yet elegant side. The colorful 18th-century buildings, narrow lanes, and the central square are always prepared to amaze the visitors.

There are a lot of reasons that make Stockholm, the heart of Sweden. But the most important one is the Drottningholm Palace. Situated in Lake Mälaren, is the epitome of the regal past of Sweden and the rich history. Constructed in 1662, Drottningholm is one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. Drottningholms Slottsteater, adjacent to the palace can tell the story of 18th-century drama culture.

Thought the constant temperature inside the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi is -5 to -7 degrees, there is no need to feel scared. This ice hotel is well equipped to give travelers all the comforts. The crystal-like rooms and bluish ambiance is nothing less than Disney Frozen setting. They also offer a lot of activities that the guest can enjoy. It can be a once in a lifetime experience

Scandinavia Summer

We mostly visit a place only once in our lifetime. In Scandinavia and Norway, the Lofoten Islands at 68 degrees North Latitude is not just any place. Some call it ‘heaven on earth’, feeling stunned at the natural beauty they experience. The Norwegian Fjords of the south-central will add the icing on the cake. Let Scandinavia engage you and not simply please you!!

Arrival In Helsinki

On arrival in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, we will be driven to our hotel in the city centre. In the evening after dinner while the sun is still out you could walk to explore the surroundings including the Parliament House.

Helsinki – Stockholm

In the morning after breakfast, enjoy a Tram Ride, which will take you through the various attractions of this beautiful city. It is also a nice way to catch locals going through their daily life. Later visit the very interesting Temppeliaukio Rock Church carved into bedrock and wonder at the copper roof of this simple yet lovely architectural wonder. Return to the hotel and check out at the noon to start with the Coach City tour. The tour includes The Sibelius Monument (composer of the Finnish National Anthem), the Cathedral and the Senate Square. You would have free time overlooking the Baltic Sea to enjoy lunch (on your own). After the tour, we will move to the Cruise terminal to board the Cruise - Ferry to Stockholm. Enjoy a view of Helsinki as we bid goodbye to the capital from the sun deck. Dinner will be a Scandinavian buffet enjoyed from the cruise deck.

In the morning, have breakfast on board as we arrive in Stockholm. On disembarkation, proceed for your sightseeing trip to this beautiful city, also known as the Venice of the North. Visit Djurgarden Island to view Skansen, the beautiful open-air museum to experience Sweden's culture. Later we will visit the Vasa Museum where you can view the sheer beauty of the Vasa Ship that sank on its maiden voyage. In the afternoon check-in and later after some rest, we will enjoy a leisurely walk on the Drottninggatan (queen’s street) which is a pedestrian street in the heart of Stockholm.

Stockholm - Kiruna - Lofoten

After breakfast, proceed to the airport to board the flight to Kiruna, the northernmost town in Sweden. This is the day when we cross the Arctic Circle. A coach will stay with us for the next 3 days for our journey in the Norwegian Arctic. The journey will take you through the wilderness of North Norway and will get more exciting as you enter the Lofoten Islands. In the night, enjoy local Norwegian Cuisine. Tonight (weather permitting) we will drive to a viewpoint, from where we might be able to spot the Midnight Sun.

Today we will spend a day at leisure. Our morning activity includes a drive to Henningswaer a local fishing community. In the afternoon, we will enjoy a safari on an open boat in the sea to spot the sea eagle. This sea eagle safari is unique as these birds are indigenous to these waters. We will also try our luck with some Cod Fishing as we enter the narrowest fjord in the North "The Troll fjord’.

Lofoten - Bodo

Experience the most picturesque scenery of Norway when you drive on the E 10 highway (UNESCO World Heritage Road) from Svolvaer to Moskenes, there would be many picture-perfect fishing villages in between. We will stop by the Lofotr Viking Museum in Borg and Nusfjord, a typical charming fishing village. The Cod fishing culture and the local fervour of this part of Norway are what kept the country from joining the EU. At Moskenes, take a ferry to Bodo. Arrive in Bodo and check in. Tonight, if the sky is clear there are chances to see the midnight sun again.

Bodo - Voss

Take a flight to the beautiful town of Bergen. On arrival, we will drive to the center of Bergen. We will walk to take the Funicular Tram to Mount Floyen to catch a breathtaking view of the town along with its two ports. Later we will depart for our hotel in Voss. This acts as a transit stay for our journey tomorrow.

Voss - Skjetten

Check out from the hotel and drive to Gudvagen. Our journey will take us through 11 exciting hairpin bends. From Gudvagen we will sail to Flam on the narrowest arm of the Sognefjord. The Fjord is the longest and the deepest of all the Norwegian Fjords and this 2-hour sailing promises to be very picturesque. Flam is a scenic village from where we will take the Flam Railway, which will take us uphill to Myrdal. Enroute view the beautiful scenery as we go up including the Voringfoss Waterfall. From Myrdal board the train to Skjetten near Oslo.

Skjetten - Oslo - Skjetten

In the morning after breakfast set out on a 4 hrs sightseeing trip of Oslo. We will visit the Opera house, Karl Johans gate – Oslo’s main street, old town Christiania, Akershus Castle and Fortress, and the Royal Palace. Picturesque ride through some of Oslo’s prettiest neighbourhoods to the Vigeland Park with its more than 200 sculptures. We will then visit the city hall where the Noble Peace Prize is presented every year. We will also visit the Noble Peace Museum to learn about some of the noble peace laureates. The evening is free to walk and explore on your own.

Oslo – Mumbai

We will leave early for our flight to Istanbul and then to Mumbai.

Find Your Story

Sweden has many different stories to tell. The mainland offers mountains, forests and lakes, but Sweden also has hundreds of thousands of islands off its coasts. The country has a wonderfully diverse sampling of architectural sites that range from royal palaces to the modest homes of fishermen. No matter where you look you will find beauty, but the most spectacular sights are the midnight sun and the northern lights.

Destination Must-See's

Sweden ms1

Vasa Museum:

On tour, visit the Vasa Ship Museum to see a perfectly preserved example of a 17th century ship. Studying the craftsmanship of the vessel provides a great foundation for understanding the long-standing building tradition in a region that employs simple and practical design. On your travels you’ll notice that much of that same craftsmanship infuses Scandinavian architecture today as it has throughout history.

Sweden ms2

Stockholm Archipelago:

Stockholm is sometimes called the “Venice of the North” because there’s water everywhere. There are 30,000 islands that lie in Stockholm’s spectacular archipelago. Some islands are occupied, and have red and yellow timber houses on them for summer residents, but many are still just as nature created them.

Sweden ms3

The Northern Lights

October through March is the best time to get a chance to see the famous Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights. It’s mother nature’s most stunning light show and an absolute treat to see if you’re lucky enough to get the chance.

Sweden ms4

The Midnight Sun:

Travelers visiting from May to July will experience what it’s like first hand to live in a place where the sun never sets. The intensity of the sun varies depending on fog or clouds, but it can be seen for nearly 24 hours a day during the warmer months.

Destination Must-Do's

Sweden md1

Travel the Bergen Railway:

The Bergen Railway is considered to be Europe’s most scenic rail journey. Your camera is in for a workout as you chug through breathtaking fjords and mountain terrain on your way to wondrous Bergen.

Sweden md2

Cruise Nærøyfjord:

This is the most famous arm of the Sognefjord and is the narrowest fjord in Europe with incredible views of waterfalls and tiny farms hugging the steep mountainside. Keep your eyes peeled for goats grazing right along the fjord and seals sunning themselves on the rocks.

Sweden md3

Norwegian Coastal Voyage:

Board a Hurtigruten ship for what has been dubbed the “World’s Most Beautiful Voyage.” You’ll sail for six magnificent days along the stunning Norwegian coastline enjoying a wealth of landscapes, scenery, sights and sounds.

Sweden md4

Eat dinner at Fem Små Hus:

Located in the heart of Stockholm’s old town, this intimate 17th century restaurant is comprised of five connected timber houses. The fare, served by candlelight, captures the flavors of a bygone era.

Expert Advice

As you prepare to explore Sweden, enjoy a casual dress style and be sure to pack comfortable walking shoes. Travelers should prepare for a range of temperatures due to the geography of the region and its northern location.

Sweden e2

The Swedish enjoy smoked river trout baked with local herbs and vegetables. Deer, elk and bear meat are often on the dishes of this region. These meats are made into meatballs and served with a gravy sauce and hard bread or mixed with stewed vegetables and heated for hours. In Sweden, adventurous travelers might try the traditional Swedish “hamburger” made from smoked local meats.

Sweden e3

One of the best parts of traveling is coming back home with souvenirs that really reflect the place you’ve just been. In Sweden, keep your eye out for a traditional dale horse carving plus glass, crystal and handicrafts.

Sweden Travel Restrictions for Covid

International travel has changed quite a lot with the onset of Covid-19. RT PCR tests and quarantine are the usual norms for visiting most international locations.  From 9th February 2022 onwards, there is no entry ban from an EU/EEA country, but the entry ban from the rest of the world is in effect until 31st March 2022.

Entry from EU/EEA :  As per the official Swedish government website, the country has decided to return to the entry restrictions applicable before 28th December 2021. The requirement of the negative Covid-19 test performed within 48 hours before entry has been removed. The list of countries with approved vaccination certificates has also been expanded recently. The changes went into effect from 21st January 2022. Entry from countries outside the EU/EEA : Those travelling to Sweden from a country outside the EU/EEA must be covered by one of the exemptions from the travel ban. They must present a negative Covid-19 test performed within 72 hours of entering Sweden or be exempt from the testing requirement. For more details, refer our Sweden travel guidelines page.

Dos and Don’ts for travelling to Sweden

1) Give Swedes their personal space. Maintain an arm's length distance at most times and limit the amount of touching as they may view it as an invasion of their privacy and personal space.

2) Talk about nature. Swedes love their natural surroundings and enjoy their country’s natural beauty. Talk to them about it; they’ll love it!

3) Be punctual; Swedes like being on time. Be neither too late nor too early. If you have a meeting scheduled, make sure you reach on time.

4) Try to be a part of ‘fika’ ( coffee/tea with conversations). Swedes are very social and love to engage in ‘fika’ to bond over coffee.

5) Remain tidy. Swedes appreciate cleanliness and tidiness, whether it's their surroundings or home. Littering in parks or not removing shoes when visiting someone’s house is something one must avoid when in Sweden.

Don’ts

1) Do not boast about your achievements. Swedes appreciate modesty and humility.

2) Do not make jokes about different ethnicities, stereotypes, or cultures. You will be faced with disapproval.

3) Raising voices and exaggerated body language are usually not liked by Swedish people.

4) Be discreet when talking about migration and settlement of refugees or Australia’s migration. The other person’s knowledge level may differ and must not be presumed.

5) Do not make severe comparisons between Swedes and people from other Nordic regions.

About Sweden holidays

The Scandinavian nation of Sweden is a land of glaciers, mountains, boreal forests, and coastal islands. Sweden is lucky to experience four seasons - winter, spring, summer, and fall, each having its personality. People here love the outdoors, talking about nature and experiencing it.  The entire country can be divided into three main regions - Gotaland in the South, Svealand in the middle, and Norrland in the north. Swedish is the official language of people in Sweden. There are five minority languages - Finnish, Yiddish, Sami, Meänkieli, and Romani chib - used here. Holidaying in Sweden is all about nature, history, and culture. Before you pack your bags for the Sweden trip, check out these popular Sweden travel packages from Thomas Cook.

Most popular Sweden tour packages

Combining your hotel and flights into a Sweden vacation package is a fantastic way to plan a budget trip. You may customise your own Sweden package and choose from various options offered by Thomas Cook.

We already consume and use several Swedish products and services such as Ikea, H&M, Volvo, etc., but while you are in Sweden, buying souvenirs from local shops that represent Swedish culture can be exciting and worth it. You will find souvenirs from all over Sweden in Stockholm, which can be your one-stop shopping location in Sweden.

Here’s the list of things to buy in Sweden

1) The wooden Dala Horse Wooden Dala Horse is handcrafted and painted in Dalama and is used as a colourful accessory. It can be found in most shops in Sweden and is considered a symbol of good luck.

2) Swedish Sami jewellery  The Sami jewellery from the Lapland region is made of silver and reindeer leather. The designs are intricate, and the jewellery has mostly braided designs.

Apart from these items, you can also buy cosmetics, crystal, high-quality glass, handbags, and so on while in Sweden. You can look for the sign ‘REA’ which indicates a sale and ‘Extrapis’ for discounts. These tips should help you with bargaining and shopping at the best price. When you travel with Thomas Cook on a package tour, you get enough time to shop and buy a bagful of memories from your Sweden trip.

Best Time to Visit Sweden

Sweden is blessed with four seasons - Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. The Scandinavian peninsula is known for its natural beauty, and people enjoy visiting all the nations here as each one of them is incredibly beautiful with breathtaking natural beauty. Sweden is the biggest country in the peninsula and also the cleanest. The winters are extreme here, but all other seasons are pleasant and perfect for tourists to visit.

The spring and summer are perfect for travelling and experiencing a mild climate, but if you hope to see the Northern Lights, this isn't the best time. Northern Lights can only be seen during the winters when there isn’t any daylight. But, if being in Sweden during the midsummer solstice is your dream, then Summer(June) is the best time to visit Sweden .

Midsummer- Flowers, wreaths, and the sun that never sets is called midsummer in Sweden. This is when Sweden experiences 24x7 daylight. People are in a cheerful mood; they leave for the countryside to celebrate 5 weeks of holidays. It is usually celebrated on one of the Fridays between June 19-25th. If you get a chance to visit Sweden during this time, then you must!

Winters - Northern Lights - Winters in Sweden are harsh and cold throughout the year. In midwinter, there’s no daylight at all towards the north of the Arctic circle. If you are lucky, you might experience the sky lit up with northern lights. This is the time when families get ready for winter sports and Christmas break.

How to reach Sweden from India

It is essential to know about the airport network of any new nation that you are travelling to, especially if it's on a different continent. Sweden has several airports, but we need not worry about all of them. It has only four main International airports, namely -

1)Stockholm Arlanda :  This is the main International airport as it is located in Stockholm- the capital of the country. All major airlines from North America , Asia, other European nations, and the Middle East fly to Stockholm Arlanda airport.

3)Stockholm Skavsta : It is located 100 km towards the South of the capital city. This airport is majorly for travelling to and from European nations. A lot of low-budget airlines like Ryanair and Wizzair use this airport.

4)Sturup Airport : This airport is located in Malmo, which is in the Southern region of Sweden. It has limited domestic and international flights operating from here. This is the only accessible airport for this region. Scandinavian Airlines is the most popular airline along with other European airlines like Ryanair, EasyJet, and Norwegian. What to eat - 5 delicacies you must try when in Sweden!

1) Lingonberry Jam is widely used by Swedes, just like ketchup and mustard. It is a sweet jam usually eaten in a variety of dishes, including meatballs, pancakes, and porridge. Although it is sweet, it is rarely used in bread. People pick up lingonberries from nearby forests and make the jam at home. If you get to try this homemade jam, then you must try and savour it with meatballs and pancakes.

2) Crispbread - Swedes love their bread! Crispbread was once considered poor man’s food but is now widely eaten all over Sweden. It is eaten alongside the main meal. The crispbread comes in various shapes and sizes and can be stored for up to a year. So, you can eat it and carry it home for your family and friends.

3) Pea soups and pancakes - This is again a very popular dish in Sweden which people usually have on Thursdays as per old world war 2 traditions. Many traditional restaurants serve pea soup and pancakes along with pancakes and lingonberry jam.

4) Princess cake - You will find the green princess cake in most bakeries in Sweden. It is a green cake with a pink rose on the top. It is made of layers of yellow sponge cake and filled with vanilla custard and jam. It is sealed with green marzipan, hence the green colour. The third week of September is usually the princess cake week, but it is now widely eaten on many other days and is available in other colours as well.

5) Crayfish - Crayfish parties are popular in the Summers, in the month of August in Sweden. These are small red bite-sized red shellfishes feasted by Swedes all over Sweden in gardens and on balconies. Once eaten only by the royals and the upper-class citizens, the crayfish has now become popular everywhere with time.

Things to do in Sweden

There is a lot to do in Sweden, just like its neighbours, Norway and Finland.

Sweden is a paradise for those looking to spend some time in nature and explore Swedish culture and history. While Sweden has Lapland in the North, various castles and cities are to be explored in the South.

If you are short on time, here’s a list of 4 things you must do when in Sweden-

Spot wild moose and reindeer at Idre

One of the best things about Sweden is its wildlife. You can go reindeer spotting at Idre. You must experience a reindeer eating from your hand. You can also learn how reindeers have adapted to the northern hemisphere's climate. You can hike along with reindeers and learn about their herder's history. You can enjoy reindeer grazing and observe them as you hike along.

Experience genuine Sami culture and hospitality

While in Sweden, you have to visit the Swedish Lapland, which is the northernmost part of Sweden. The northernmost regions of Sweden, Norway , and Finland , also known as Sapmi, is the land of the indigenous population - the Sami people, who have been living here for thousands of years. The Samis have divided the year into eight seasons. They have named every valley and mountain peak here in Lapland. While in Lapland, you can immerse yourself in Sami culture via different experiences offered by various hotels and resorts here. One of the popular ones is Geunja Sami Eco Lodge which is located by a lake in Ammarnas. Here, you will learn about the Sami culture and traditions. You can enjoy nature as well as animals with which the Sami people are connected. Here, you can also go for short hiking trips, boat rides, and some fishing. You can try some of the traditional dishes such as reindeer stew and chanterelle soup, cooked over an open fire. You can sleep in a traditional goathie hut or a grass-roofed log cabin for the most authentic Sami experience.

Enjoy the most scenic hike of Sweden - The King’s trail

Hiking the King’s trail, Kungsleden takes you through four national parks, a world heritage site, and to the scenic mountains of the far north of Sweden. The hike is more than 400 km long but has multiple entries and exit points, so it can be enjoyed by anyone from anywhere. The entire trail would take about a month to cover, but since it's broken into different sections, you can pick and choose from the entire trail. You can hike the most popular section, which is from Abisko to Nikkaluokta, if you have 10-12 days. Here you will pass via the Abisko national park along with vast open areas, lakes, streams, and some of the highest mountains of Sweden.

The King’s trail is located above the Arctic circle, but it's fairly easy due to lower altitudes, levelled terrain, and well-maintained hiking trails. Even children can be a part of this adventure as trails aren’t that difficult. While you hike along the trail, you will find several Swedish mountain huts. You can stay in a different hut every day. The huts will provide you with basic amenities such as mattresses, pillows, blankets, and food.

Spot the magical Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights)

The Northern Lights can be spotted in Sweden between early September and late March.

During the beginning of September, you can find northern lights in and around Kiruna, in the far north of Sweden. When winter has set in completely, northern lights can be seen throughout the Swedish Lapland. The last sights of the coloured skies can be seen as late as the end of March or early April.

Many visitors come to Sweden on long winter nights to view the magnificent display of colours. On clear evenings, the best time to spot the lights is between 6 pm and 2 am. The most spectacular display is usually around 10 pm- 11 pm.

Lapland is a winter wonderland that offers various winter sports opportunities, the northern lights, and the authentic Sami culture experience. You must visit here to see the Northern Lights in action.

The top things to do are both outdoorsy and cultural in Sweden. A visit to Stockholm introduces a visitor to this multifaceted city through its excellent museums, culinary delights and beautiful parks. A major attraction just outside of Stockholm is the world UNESCO sight of Drottningholm Palace. Another popular place to visit is Sigtuna, the oldest town in Sweden, or the most northern province of lapland. Visiting the towns and cities of Sweden gives travelers a picture of Swedish culture.

Travelers enjoy coming to Sweden to engage in outdoor recreation such as visiting one or many of the National Parks, planning a trek, a bike tour or relaxing in many natural preserves. Let’s not forget seeing the Northern Lights in the winter! In particular, travelers see the lights in Abisko National Park or another northern area.

In the summer, there are many festivals including celebrations of Midsummer, which celebrates the longest day of the year in June. These festivals happen throughout the country and include unique dancing, food and festivities. After enduring another long winter, Swedes love to celebrate the new season’s bounty! No matter what interests you, this country has a variety of regions, each with unique things to see and do.

Can’t miss Swedish cuisine

When you first think of Swedish cuisine, you might think of Swedish meatballs, known for their exceptional spicing. Apart from that, Sweden has excellent seafood dishes, namely numerous fish dishes such as marinated salmon with dill potatoes, pickled herring on a Smörgåsbord (buffet) or Gubbröra, an egg and anchovy dish served with brown bread. To top it off, have some dessert! Enjoy the Princess cake or the Saffron buns.

Here are some other classic Swedish culinary delights:

Jansson’s Temptation - a traditional Christmas casserole of potatoes and anchovies

Taking a bike tour in Sweden

A bike tour is a great way to explore both the cities and the countryside of Sweden. The summer time is the best time to plan a bike tour in Sweden, since it has warmer and longer days.

Sweden is offers cyclists a wide variety of terrain including mountain trails, scenic coastal byways or city tours. It is also an excellent place for a bike tour because of the spectacular and wild scenery that you will get up close and personal on an extended trip.  There is something for every level of cyclist and can be challenging or more leisurely depending on what type of cycling you’d like to do.

Some popular places to bike are Klarälvsbanan that is 220 km tour in west-central Sweden or Kattegattleden, Sweden’s first national bike route on that goes 370 km along the west coast. Additionally,  One possible weeklong bike tour is written in the itinerary section.

Tips for taking a bike tour in Sweden

Bring your own bike/gear on the airplane or rent one from many shops in Stockholm. You can rent by hour or for multiple days.

Take care of your bike and gear. If out for multiple days, be prepared with the proper tools and maintenance knowledge. Although there is far less crime in Sweden than the U.S, it is always important to lock your bike and take care of your personal belongings.

The road rules are generally the same as in the U.S. and they drive on the right as well. Remember to follow all the posted signs and don’t forget that they measure distance in kilometres!

Sweden outdoor travel

Sweden is home to nearly any outdoor adventure you can think of, be it a trek, hike, bike tour, ski trip, snowshoe, fishing, camping, etc. You can choose an itinerary that fits your activity level and the sights you’d like to see. Snowshoeing is not for everyone, but if you’re up to the challenge, it’s invigorating and can get you to unique places not easily accessible by vehicle, or even dogsled! Snowshoeing can be enjoyed in many of Sweden’s National Parks.

Fishing or fly fishing - In the summer months, a visitor to Sweden can enjoy being in nature while fishing along over 100,000 lakes, rivers or along the coast.  One local fishermen's spot is Lake Vanern, one Sweden’s largest lakes.

Many exciting activities await you in this city, including watching the change of the guard at the Royal Palace, relaxing in the quaint town square, Stortorget, or taking a boat to the city’s greenest island, Djurgården.

But Sweden is much more than it’s capital! While primarily a country for outdoorsy travel, Sweden’s cities provide wonderful glimpses into the Swedish culture, cuisine, and modern local life, each of which with its own attractions and character.

O ther main cities to visit in Sweden include:

Gothenburg - a city known for its arts and music festivals, it is a great place to get a taste for the local culture.

Uppsala & Sigtuna - these places allow the visitor to imagine the past lifestyles in Sweden due to well-preserved old town centers.

Malmö - a coastal city in southern Sweden, this city is within striking distance of Denmark and as such has an interesting international feel.

Västerås - a medium sized city, this city sits beside Lake Malaren, about 100 km west of Stockholm.

Swedish National Parks

Sweden is home to 30 distinctive National Parks that have varying and dynamic landscapes. There are National Parks that are more marine-based, more mountainous, magical forests and expansive sand dunes.

Some of the most popular National Parks in Sweden include:

ÄNGSÖ National Park - An untouched gem, only accessible by boat, and a truly great place to visit for those wanting to get away from it all. ANGSO National Park is beautiful year round, but commonly only included on Sweden tour itineraries in the Summer.

Abisko National Park - an excellent viewing spot for the Northern Lights!

Sonfjallet National Park - one of the oldest National Parks in Europe.

You will find a beautiful National Park in Sweden for whichever natural landscape you’d like to immerse yourself in.

Visiting Sweden in the winter

Sweden is a great destination for winter enthusiasts! You can enjoy this season through snowshoeing, nordic (cross-country) or downhill skiing or ice fishing. After your day of adventures outside, you can warm yourself by enjoying delicious seasonal winter dishes, tasty beverages and then plan for your next day outdoors.

You can also enjoy visiting the famous ice hotel-museum in Kiruna or peruse the indoor side of any major city. Don’t forget that the winter is the best time to see the Northern Lights. Remember to be prepared for cold and changing weather by packing accordingly.
