Lindt Home of Chocolate Review (My Recent Visit)

Lindt Home of Chocolate

Lindt’s Home of Chocolate blew me away. Sure, the museum here is amazing, but this stunning modern building is oh so much more!

The Lindt Home of Chocolate is a relatively new project from Lindt, located right next door to the main Lindt chocolate factory in Kilchberg, Zurich. The building houses the Lindt Chocolate Competence Foundation, a group within Lindt that aims to maintain Switzerland’s expertise in chocolate.

Lindt Home of Chocolate

The Foundation has used this stunning white building in many ways.

Pilot production line at the Lindt Home of Chocolate

For example, there is a Chocolate Competence Center for training, a research facility, a Pilot production line for their new ideas and then there are the areas you will love:

  • a huge chocolate museum covering 1500m2
  • the largest Lindt chocolate shop in the world
  • a unique Chocolateria offering chocolate-making courses
  • the first Lindt Café in Switzerland

Yes indeed, Lindt has left no stone unturned in this masterpiece of a building that is all about chocolate lovers. Oh wait, there is one more thing…

Giant chocolate fountain - Lindt Home of Chocolate

Right in the center of the main hall is a 9-meter (28 ft) giant chocolate fountain oozing 1500 liters from Lindt’s signature whisk high above you. It is quite a sight to behold. Just a pity you can’t dip your finger in it. But you do get free chocolate samples on the museum tour. And lots of them. More on that later!

Book Lindt Museum Tickets Ahead

The Lindt Museum is one of the most popular museums in Switzerland. Hundreds of people visit every day (and sometimes every hour!). If you want to avoid the lines when you arrive, book your ticket ahead and walk right in!

One of the best ways to do that is using the Viator website where you can choose your date and go. You can always cancel if you don’t want to go and you don’t have to pay until the day. How cool is that?

Home Of Chocolate Museum Tour

The Home of Chocolate Museum is a marvel from beginning to end. There is so much to see, read, learn and do. And if you want an audio-guided interactive chocolate tour, you can also grab one as you enter and change the language via the flags on the wall.

Now, it’s time to enter Lindt’s interactive world of chocolate….

Cocoa Beans

swiss travel pass lindt home of chocolate

You start at the beginning of the chocolate journey, with cocoa beans . Exploring where they come from, how they are processed and the people whose lives are all about cocoa.

Early History of Chocolate

swiss travel pass lindt home of chocolate

Next up is some chocolate history. How it came from the new world via the Spanish explorers to Europe and gradually made its way into people’s lives.

The different types of chocolate and hot chocolate and how they changed over time – from a luxury to something available to everyone. You also get to see some fun packaging from the era, many of which are very rare.

Swiss Chocolate Pioneers

swiss travel pass lindt home of chocolate

Moving on to Swiss chocolate history, now it is time to learn all about Switzerland’s role in the industry. The different chocolate companies and the techniques and machinery they invented helped bring chocolate to where it is today.

Of course, Lindt features here too, and his invention of the conch, the whisk you always see and how it revolutionized chocolate from a hard, brittle mass to the smooth-flowing bars we know and love today.

Moving on, there is now a really fun display of all the different chocolate packaging from the last hundred years or so. You can really see the evolution of the Swiss chocolate industry, with the changes in bars and wrappers, as well as the merging of various Swiss chocolate companies.

Lindor Balls Tasting & Selfie

Eat as many Lindt balls as you like!

After you are done here, it’s time to get a selfie inside a Lindor ball and then…eat as many of them as you want! It’s kinda mind-blowing that you can just grab these Lindor balls and eat them to your heart’s content. Just don’t get sick from it all! I certainly did.

Take a selfie at the Lindt Museum

And on the other wall are some cool seats built into Lindt balls where you can take a selfie as a memento of your visit.

Get Your Gift

Waiting for their Lindt gift at the Home of Chocolate

Once you are done in the museum, you can head out to the upper floor area and on the opposite side, you should see people lining up for the Lindt gift. Just bring your museum ticket to get yours!

Movie Auditorium

Lindt auditorium with movies on the history of Lindt

If you are still not sick and tired of chocolate there is also a short 20-minute movie on the history of Lindt or another one all about Switzerland. They alternate. Just walk straight past the chocolate fountain to the end of the corridor and you will find the auditorium there.

The World’s Largest Lindt Chocolate Shop

Biggest Lindt Chocolate Shop

I have ever seen every single form of Lindt chocolate all in one place. This is certainly the biggest Lindt chocolate shop in the world. So, get your credit card ready.

Lindor balls - pick and match

Everything from Lindt blocks and Lindor balls to hot chocolate, tasty pralines and everything in between. It’s a great place to get some gifts to take home to your family and friends. You just might have trouble choosing which chocolate to buy!

I managed to get my hands on some flavors here that I have not seen on the shelves in Switzerland. The choice was mindblowing. I think they had every single product that Lindt has and does make. Of course, you can also pop around the back of the factory and visit the Lindt factory outlet store, but there is less choice and honestly, the discounts there are not that great. I think I saved 10% on some blocks.

CHOCOLATERIA: Create Your Own Chocolates

There is also a chocolate-making course you can do here in the Lindt Chocolateria. Lindt Master Chocolatiers will help you assemble your own personal chocolate creation. There are a surprising number of options for chocolate making courses here from Lindt bars, pralines, and Christmas bears to truffles. Just be sure to book your course ahead of time for you Lindt chocolate making class.

The Lindt Cafe in the Home of Chocolate

Once it’s time to put up your feet, you will find the Lindt Cafe right by the entrance on the left-hand side. Treat yourself to a cup of coffee, one of Lindt’s legendary hot chocolates, or a savory snack to keep you going.

  • An interactive chocolate tour takes you on a journey to Ghana, where you can look over the shoulders of cocoa farmers.

What awaits you at the Lindt Home of Chocolate

The chocolate tour is interactive. You have the choice of taking a personal guide or an audio guide. It's best to book courses in advance, as they are in high demand.

  • Chocolate tour

The Lindt Home of Chocolate enchants you with interactive time travels into the past and to the cocoa trees in Ghana. That's where the cocoa comes from that is used in Lindt chocolate.

In tastings you will get to know the special taste of Lindt chocolate. You can borrow an audio guide for the chocolate tour. It is available in six languages (German, English, Italian, French, Spanish, Mandarin). There is also a German version adapted for children.

After the history of chocolate creation, you will enter a tasting room. Three chocolate fountains are ready to be tasted. Afterwards, a buffet provides delicious Lindor balls in many variations.

At the end of the tour, you can witness the entire process of creating new chocolates. But the best part of the chocolate tour is the unlimited chocolate tastings. A tour lasts about 1:00 - 1:30 hours.

  • Chocolate courses

In various chocolate courses, you get the chance to create your own chocolate. Under the expert guidance of Lindt Maîtres Chocolatiers, you will make your own "Florentines," decorated lollipops, and figurines out of chocolate. Other courses let you create pralinés and champagne truffles.

For chocolate classes, the Chocolateria holds a total of up to 60 people. A chocolate course is also a good idea for a bachelor party , Valentine's Day or a team event .

  • Shop, café and events

At the Lindt Home of Chocolate, there is a café with background music where you can "digest" the experience and tastings a bit. Private parties for up to 60 people are held in the lounge.

The Lindt Home of Chocolate has a well-stocked store where you can buy exclusive chocolate gifts and souvenirs in a 500 square meter space. It is the ideal place to take home unique gifts for chocolate lovers.

By the way, the Lindt Home of Chocolate is completely wheelchair accessible.

The Lindt Home of Chocolate is located on the western side of Lake Zurich and is easily accessible by public transport. From Zurich it takes about 20 min.

By car, it takes about 16 minutes from Zurich via Mythenquai. You can park your car for a fee in the underground car park of the Lindt Home of Chocolate. The maximum height for the entrance is 2.15 meters. Charging stations for electric cars are also available here.

The Chocolarium is not the only chocolate factory you can visit. In our article about Swiss chocolate factories you will find many more sweet happiness factories.

In summary, the Lindt Home of Chocolate offers an unforgettable experience that appeals to chocolate connoisseurs as well as families and tourists. It is an opportunity to explore and enjoy the world of chocolate in all its facets.

How a weekend mistake gave us the silky smoothness of Swiss chocolate

From the iconic toblerone, inspired by the majestic matterhorn mountain, to the rich chocolate culture that permeates every corner of the country, switzerland offers a paradise for chocolate lovers..

swiss travel pass lindt home of chocolate

Switzerland, famed for housing numerous chocolate factories crafting irresistible milk chocolates, sparked my curiosity during a visit. And I embarked on a journey through the museum and factory of the Lindt Home of Chocolate.

With Switzerland also home to esteemed chocolate names like Mika, Callier, and Toblerone, the temptation to explore further was tantalising. Alas, time constraints led us to choose the closest factory, nestled in Kilchberg. Amid a stunning backdrop, we were invited to embark on a sensorial journey through the rich history and exquisite craftsmanship that define Swiss chocolate.

Tracing the origins

My journey began with a glimpse into the ancient origins of chocolate, tracing its roots back to the Mayans and Aztecs of Mesoamerica. For these ancient civilisations, the cacao bean was revered for its divine properties. It was used to create a bitter, frothy beverage enjoyed during sacred ceremonies. It was a symbol of wealth and power, and a precious commodity that transcended mere sustenance.

Centuries later, chocolate made its way to Europe, courtesy of Spanish conquistadors who sweetened it with sugar, transforming it into the delectable treat we know today. Yet, it was in Switzerland that chocolate truly found its home, thanks to visionaries like Daniel Peter and Rudolf Lindt .

Rudolph’s brother, August, felt the extra liquid that was in chocolate had to be extracted so that sugar did not crystallise. This idea worked and Lindt chocolate was created. Today, thousands of chocolate and history lovers visit the renowned chocolate factory.

Festive offer

Twelve years later, they opened a larger confectionery in Zurich’s Paradeplatz, one of the most expensive pieces of real estate in Switzerland. Twenty years later, Rudolph Lindt bought two factories that were fire-damaged near Berne as well as several rundown machines. He wanted to change the brittle and bitter components of chocolate and make the production process less laborious.

I booked a guide for a one-hour guided tour of the museum, but you can also opt for a self-operated audio guide, accessible in six languages, and make your way through an interactional multimedia presentation commencing in the forests of Ghana. Here we learn all about how cocoa is grown, harvested and processed into the Lindt chocolate we know and love.

Monique Reisen, our private tour guide, shared insights into the philosophy of quality and innovation. “We prioritise using the finest ingredients and techniques to create unforgettable chocolate experiences,” she explained. “It’s a process that involves inspiration, experimentation, and meticulous taste testing to achieve the perfect balance of flavours and textures.”

But Lindt is just one chapter in the rich tapestry of Swiss chocolate. Switzerland boasts a plethora of chocolate brands, each with its unique story to tell. From the iconic Toblerone, inspired by the majestic Matterhorn mountain, to the rich chocolate culture that permeates every corner of the country, Switzerland offers a paradise for chocolate lovers.

The ultramodern white edifice ascends three storeys over me, with the ground floor conquered by a massive 30ft chocolate fountain pouring over an enormous Lindt ball, and an equivalently mammoth chocolate shop. Plus, the aroma is bliss!

From cocoa bean to confection

It was in the 15th century that this cocoa water reached Spain after the conquistador Cortés combatted the Aztecs and called it the “drink of the Gods”. Xocolatl was excessively bitter for European palates, so the Spanish whipped it with honey and sugar. When French King Louis XIII wedded Spanish Princess Anne of Austria, the secret recipe was out and sipping chocolate became hugely popular in the prosperous European society. With the invention of the chocolate press in the 19th century, the method of crafting chocolate became speedier and further cost-effective, permitting even the less rich to savour the sweet indulgence. And this is not the complete story yet!

The adjoining room is about “the Swiss Inventors”—or how Switzerland became the world’s chocolate capital. The copiousness of milk produced up in the verdant Alpine meadows is what makes Swiss chocolate delectably velvety. It was in 1875, when Daniel Peter joined hands with his Vevey neighbour, Henri Nestlé, to add milk powder to chocolate that milk chocolate was born.

The machine that made chocolate edible

Swiss chocolatiers went on to generate brands that are still celebrated today: Daniel Peter’s Gala, Nestlé, Toblerone, Cailler, Sprüngli and Lindt. In the middle of this room is Lindt’s revolutionary technology—the conching machine, where chocolate is repeatedly spun from side to side for up to five days, creating a much softer fineness. This allows the chocolatier to produce the smooth melt-in-your-mouth chocolate in the heart of Lindt balls.

Rudolph Lindt stumbled upon the transformative power of conching by accident. Leaving his factory machines running over a weekend, he returned on Monday to find the extended mixing had completely changed the chocolate. Intrigued, Lindt explored this further, ultimately inventing a specialized grinding machine to perfect the process.

Passing through exhibits of significant packaging and prints and the moulds for the famed gold Lindt bunny, I help myself to a spoonful of liquid dark, white and milk chocolate, and catch squares of diverse flavoured chocolate as they are fragmented off and released from machines.

My favourite is the crunchy sea salt caramel Last but not least is the chocolate tasting room, where an elongated counter holds containers of every seasoned Lindor truffles I can imagine. Once I managed to move away from the chocolate heaven, a raised walkway brought me over to the central foyer and the chocolate fountain, where 1500 kg of chocolate flowed at the speed of 1 kg per second. It leads to a lengthy glass window where I saw pilot plant machinery in all its glory, creating new products.

Swiss chocolatiers prioritise quality and craftsmanship, using only the finest ingredients and perfecting techniques that have been passed down through generations.

Snap, savour and share

As I delved deeper into the world of Swiss chocolate, stories of pioneers like François-Louis Cailler, Philippe Suchard and Daniel Peter, whose innovations have shaped the industry as we know it today, were uncovered. From mass-producing pressed chocolate to inventing mixing machines for blending sugar and cocoa, these visionaries have left an indelible mark on the history of Swiss chocolate.

swiss chocolate

Still not feeling satiated, I headed to the gigantic gift shop, a chocolatey shopping paradise of over 500 m. I tried some handmade chocolates and stocked up on all my favourites. It’s certainly the nearest I could get to running excited in Willy Wonka ’s workshop of sweet reveries.

swiss chocolate

Those interested can go for one of the on-site courses that help you make your own cocoa-based masterwork.

After absorbing so much about chocolate, I was dying to savour some. Fortunately, the Home of Chocolate apprehended this, and the next few rooms permit guests to pamper oneself in as much chocolate as one likes. Of course, one mustn’t be greedy!

7 Great Chocolate Shops in Zurich, Switzerland

C hocolate is synonymous with Switzerland. If you visit Zurich, your friends and family are sure to ask you if you had any chocolate (and they’re likely to expect you to have brought some back). I visited various chocolate shops in Zurich to find the best ones, including everything from budget options to high-end artisanal chocolate shops.

The Best Chocolate in Zurich

Since 1845, Lindt has been one of the most famous names in Swiss chocolate. There are dozens of Lindt chocolate shops all over the world. The international conglomerate also owns the famed San Francisco chocolate brand Ghirardelli and Russell Stover.

The Lindt Home of Chocolate factory & museum is located just a short distance from the Zurich city center in nearby Kilchberg, making it one of the most popular activities in the city. Book Lindt Home of Chocolate tickets & tours here

If you can’t make it out to the Lindt Home of Chocolate, their shop in central Zurich introduces you to a world of chocolate up a waterfall (chocolatefall?) staircase.

The Zurich airport also has a Lindt shop for last-minute shoppers. Or if you forget, there’s a good chance you can buy some Lindt locally & just tell people you bought it in Switzerland . I won’t tell anyone your secret.

Lindt pick-and-mix bags of chocolate are the cheapest option for bringing gifts back home if you’re on a budget or for people who won’t know or care if you’re giving them the absolute best chocolate. But there’s no such thing as bad chocolate (except for Hershey’s).

Address: Bahnhofstrasse 89, 8001 Zürich, Switzerland ( map ) Website

Confiserie Sprüngli

Confiserie Sprüngli is actually related to Lindt, though it has been a separate company since 1892. The original company was founded by David Sprüngli and his son Rudolf Sprüngli-Ammann in 1836. Following the 1892 retirement of Rudolf Sprüngli-Ammann, he split his business between his two sons, with one getting the chocolate factory that would later become Lindt following an acquisition and the other getting two confectionery stores that would become Confiserie Sprüngli.

Confiserie Sprüngli is perhaps the most popular Zurich chocolate shop, boasting several locations with a wide array of chocolates, cakes, and other desserts. There is also an airport location.

The location I visited was the main store & took up a massive ground floor that included a shop and a cafe, both of which were packed with chocolate-happy customers.

The shop has separate counters for each type of item, including Grand Cru chocolates, chocolate slabs, macarons, truffles, pralines, and more.

Address: Bahnhofstrasse 21, 8001 Zürich, Switzerland ( map ) Website

Max Chocolatier

While there are Zurich chocolate makers that are known worldwide & have large factories, there are also a few artisanal chocolate shops in the city that cater to true connoisseurs.

Max Chocolatier is located on a quiet side street in the Lindenhof quarter of Zurich’s Altstadt (old town). Their handmade, handpainted chocolates are all organic, with no palm oil or other additives. The Lucerne-based business was founded by Patrik König & is lovingly named after his son Max.

When I visited the shop, the staff member not only took the time to explain the shop’s ethos but also the various unique flavors they were offering that day, such as the green tea, which had just a fresh hint of the flavor so as not to overpower the exquisite chocolate.

He brought up the good point that with this high-quality chocolate, just a small piece can be satisfying. So, while you might spend more based on weight, quality will win out over quantity. I was able to convince myself that this is also healthier, which is actually true. It’s better to have one piece of high-quality chocolate than several pieces that include low-quality additives.

If you’re seeking the absolute best chocolate in Zurich, head to Max Chocolatier.

Address: Schlüsselgasse 12, 8001 Zürich, Switzerland ( map ) Website

Confiserie Teuscher

Confiserie Teuscher is another well-known chain with multiple chocolate shops in Zurich.

The shop goes all-out for each seasonal holiday. When I visited, Easter was the following weekend, so the shop was filled with easter chocolates and lots of flowers.

Teuscher shops sell various flavored chocolate bars and lots of truffles. Their specialty pieces include champagne or liqueurs.

Address: Storchengasse 9, 8001 Zürich, Switzerland ( map )

Address: Bahnhofstrasse 46, 8001 Zürich, Switzerland ( map )

Dieter Meier Oro de Cacao

The pink marble/stone floored Dieter Meier Oro de Cacao is another specialty chocolate shop in Zurich’s old town. Their products are not cheap, but with fair trade, single-origin chocolates & handmade pieces that take three days to make, it’s easy to understand why.

Individual pieces have inventive flavors. They also use unique patented cold extraction to showcase the unique notes of chocolates from all over the world, such as fruity Peruvian chocolate, berry-like Dominican chocolate, and the nutty, caramelly flavors of chocolate from Ghana.

The shop also sells hot chocolate, which is excellent for cold Zurich days.

Oro De Cacao was founded by Dieter Meier, the frontman for the musical group Yello. While you might not have heard of the band, you’ve certainly heard their most famous song, which is perfect for thinking about delicious chocolate.

Note: As of February 2024, the shop is listed as closed, but the website is still active with products for sale, & their chocolates are also available at Globus Delicatessa & Coop City.

Address: Münsterhof 4, 8001 Zürich, Switzerland ( map ) Website

Founded in 1962, Läderach is a Swiss chocolatier that bridges between traditional chocolates & modern concoctions.

Their Zurich chocolate shops include everything from cheaper pick-and-mix bags with less fancy chocolate & slabs to pralines & Grand Cru selections.

They also have unique creations, such as mini-mousses, that are not to be missed.

If you can’t make it to Zurich, there are over 100 Läderach stores worldwide.

Address: Bahnhofstrasse 106, 8001 Zürich, Switzerland ( map )

Address: Goethestrasse 24, 8001 Zürich, Switzerland ( map ) Website

Vanini Swiss Chocolate

Founded in 1871, Vanini Swiss Chocolate specializes in chocolate-adjacent snacks & desserts. For example, their shop sells gelato, which looks wonderful for a summer day. They also serve crepes & pancakes topped with sweets.

I especially enjoyed the Gemme Mit Kirsch, a cake soaked in cherry liqueur and covered in milk chocolate.

The chocolate shop also serves traditional chocolates & slabs.

Address: Limmatquai 74, 8001 Zürich, Switzerland ( map )

Here are some other  great Zurich tours & activities .

Need a place to stay? Check out these Zurich hotel options . For a luxurious stay, I recommend the Park Hyatt Zurich . Zurich is an expensive city, but it’s easy to get around, so if you’re looking to save some money, you can stay at an airport hotel like the Hyatt Regency Zurich Airport The Circle , as I have also done.
