• A variety of textures, visuals and sounds stimulate sensory development.
• Sensory development is intimately related to motor development. Babies are born into a world that stimulates their senses and to which they react. These reactions are bodily movements which create learning experiences. Sensory development in babies can be facilitated through toys that provide opportunities for them to experience sounds, visuals and textures. Young infants need to be presented with an adequate but not too great amount of sensory stimulation. From an early age babies use touch to investigate their world; as they learn to reach they begin to run their tongue and lips over toys and then look at them. Tactile stimulation is also combined with other sensory information. Babies can perceive input from different sensory systems in a unified way; for instance, vision and touch are closely coordinated when using a shape sorter. Babies who handle shapes and also fit them through a hole are learning to solve problems through touch and sight. Infants also learn about the links between sights, sounds and feel of toys when these are demonstrated by adults. They begin to associate the sight and sound of a rhythmically shaken rattle or the nursery rhyme played by a particular toy. During the first year of life infants’ visual development is rapid and they begin to identify objects through shape, colour and texture. They also develop the ability to visually track objects. Toys give babies and young children many opportunities to enhance their sensory development.

• Engaging graphics & visualisation activities develop memory.
• As babies develop they begin to use mental pictures of objects that are no longer within their field of vision. These memory skills can be enhanced through presenting visual stimuli more than once; repetition is essential for the development of memory skills. Young infants’ memories are influenced by context; for instance, they can imitate an adult’s actions with a toy but only if the toy is identical in colour and features to the one that the adult played with. Older infants can remember, for instance, how to press a toy animal to make a sound even if the toy is slightly different to the one which the adult used to demonstrate. Infants’ memories become less context dependent at the same time that infants start to crawl and walk. Giving babies plenty of opportunity to explore their world allows them to enhance their memory skills.<br /> As children’s attention span increases so do their memory strategies. This means that children can use deliberate mental activities, such as visualisation, to increase the chances of retaining information in working memory and then shifting it to their long-term knowledge base. Lots of rehearsal and organisation is needed to use memory to its full advantage; repetition is an important part of both infant and childhood learning. Children can both learn and practice memory strategies using toys and games. Toys that encourage children to remember visual stimuli, answer questions and then repeat the activity over again enhance learning.

It packs a punch for its size in that it has many melodies and features. It holds more than fifty songs, melodies and sounds. There are three songs that can be used for a sing a long and the rest are melodies. The melodies are soothing, for example they will often feature birds chirping or owls hooting in the background. It adds a relaxing layer of sounds to the already calming melodies. The volume settings are good. The lower setting is at a nice volume to keep the babies from being too distracted by the melodies.

Due to the small nature of the mobile the small diameter of the birds has also proved not to be a distraction. The setting can be that the three birds twirl around or remain stationary. If the baby or toddlers does get too distracted by the birds, the arm is retractable. Alternatively, it is very easy to assemble and disassemble.

There are three different timer settings depending how long it takes your baby or toddler to fall asleep ten, twenty or thirty minutes.

I like how easy it is to transport. The arm comes off easily and it comes with a claw fastener to attach to other items such as a pram. I wish that I had this mobile when the kids were newborns as I think it would have been perfect for baby carrier and prams. Not trusting that my 12-month-old wouldn’t pull it down from the pram frame I gave it to him to carry in the pram and he loved pressing the big yellow button to go through the songs.

The travel mobile also has a light feature which fades in and out if your baby or toddler sleeps with a night light.

An added bonus of the travel mobile is that due to the number of songs and melodies my three-year-old has been asking to go into his brother’s cot and he will sit in there for half an hour and go through the music..

The melodies are largely well-known nursery rhymes. Not only is it very sweet to hear my son sing along to the melodies but it has also acted as a babysitter.

Has it helped my son stay in bed longer in the mornings? He has been waking up later than normal and I have found him standing near the mobile. I’m not sure if this is a coincidence or he is playing with the mobile but either way I’ll take it!

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
