Set-Up & Ease of Use

The Tour Striker Smart Ball consists of a small inflatable ball and a lanyard.  The ball clips to the lanyard easily, and the ball can be used either inflated or deflated, depending on the drill.  Changing the length of the lanyard is easy.  All in all, the Smart Ball couldn’t be much easier to use .

Effectiveness

There are three primary drills that the Tour Striker Smart Ball is useful for: the ball between the arms, glove under the right arm, and glove under the left arm.  The question, then, is why do you need the Smart Ball?

Let’s address the “glove under arm” drills first.  One small benefit of using the Smart Ball is that you don’t have to bend over to pick up your glove after each swing .  This isn’t a game changer, but it’s always nice to remove a hassle from your practice session.  The more important thing that the Smart Ball does is enhance the feedback you get when you lose your connection.  The golf swing happens so fast that it’s easy to lose track of when your arm flies loose.  With the Smart Ball, not only will you feel the ball drop out of your armpit, you will also feel a little tug on the lanyard letting you know that your arm is disconnected from your body.

The Smart Ball offers even more benefits for the “ball between arms” drill.  You still get the benefit of not having to pick something up after each swing and getting more feedback, but you also get a ball that’s perfectly sized and not too heavy .  There are literally dozens of devices that you can do this drill with, but many of them are too big, too small, or too heavy.  If they’re too big or small, they ruin the structure of your arms and defeat the purpose of the drill.  If they’re too heavy, they introduce an unwanted influence on the swing which compromises the drill.

All in all, the Tour Striker Smart Ball isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel, just perfect it, and it does that job very well.

The longevity grade for the Tour Striker Smart Ball is mixed.  On one hand, the uses for it aren’t as varied as many of the other Tour Striker training aids.  On the other hand, the drills it does are truly elevated by the Smart Ball, and the Smart Ball is really small and easy to keep in the bag.

At $40, the Tour Striker Smart Ball is very affordable and a worthwhile purchase for anyone who uses its drills regularly.  For a coach, this is a no-brainer purchase.

I have one of these. Makes the practice on arm structure more precise and productive. Most people think their arms don’t break down but they do, and this shows you where in the swing you are getting loose. Added thought I use: Squeezing the ball between my forearms also helps me relax my grip at the same time. Since too much grip pressure is my No. 1 flaw, it has really helped and I am getting a nice smooth release now. Using this even with slow half swings is a great warmup that really helps contact.

I appreciate that Martin Chuck has expressed there are other similar option or home items that can be used (e.g. 6″ beach ball and lanyard). This is a great multi-use training aid.

If you can answer, would this or the planemate be something better to use for swing plane and connectedness? I use the planemate but feel that I still lose arm connection, although my biggest sort of swing fault seems to be hip rotation relative to the body.

I haven’t tested the PlaneMate, so I can’t speak to that.

We found a lot of success in hitting 5 shots with the ball and 5 shots without. This helped simulate the feeling without teaching you to rely on the aid.

Tour Striker Smart Ball – Conclusion

Here at  Bestgolfaccessories.net , we were only able to identify one key area of improvement for the Tour Striker Smart Ball which is the lanyard that attaches the ball is made of cheaper plastic, causing some rough feeling shots and sometimes – even a broken lanyard.

To fix this, some have used different carabiner clips to reattach to the ball. 

This ball is fantastic – we can not recommend it enough. There are so many training aids you can buy that are one dimensional. The Tour Striker Smart Ball is so simple but helps encourage so many good things in a golf swing.

Q&a with martin chuck, inventor of the tour striker training aid.

Every invention is born out of a problem, which rings especially true when it comes to training aids for golfers. Nearly every training aid was made to correct a specific problem — whether it be an inside takeaway, a slice, topping the ball, etc. — and golf instructors will use these products to help translate a feeling into a reality for their students.

For some, learning through training aids is the only answer.

Recently I spoke to Martin Chuck, the inventor of the Tour Striker training aid, about the origin of his training aids and how he uses them to help students achieve a desired result. Chuck is no slouch as an instructor, either; he was recently named a Top-100 golf instructor by Golf Magazine.

Chuck teaches out of his academy in Scottsdale, Arizona, and he’s one of the lead instructors with Revolution Golf, an online game-improvement program. Enjoy my Q&A with him below.

1) Let’s start by discussing your thoughts and experiences that went into creating The Tour Striker.

I’ve been teaching for 32 of my 48 years. I started as a range assistant for Canadian Legend, George Knudson. I was always amazed at the intent of the player. We’ve all been told to “let the club do the work,” but that means different things to different people. One day in 2006 while coaching a really intelligent, retired new golfer, it dawned on me that no matter what I said to him about typical impact alignments and allowing his weight to rotate and relocate to his lead foot, he was going to try and hoist the ball off of the ground and arrive on his trail foot. My instruction couldn’t overwhelm his instinct. Between fat and thin shots, he could actually hit a “decent” shot from time to time, while prying it off the grass with the bottom of the club.

That lesson inspired me to go to my cart barn where we had a work bench with modest tools. I took an old Jerry Barber “Shankless” 7 iron that had lived in the lost and found barrel for longer than my time at that golf course. I began grinding. I ground off the bottom grooves of that iron, occasionally hitting a few shots to make sure I could still get it airborne with a decent swing. The following week when it was time for our lesson together, I handed him the club and asked him to hit it. He said, “I can’t hit that?!” as he looked at the oddly shaped club. I calmly took it back out of his hands and hit a normal-looking 7 iron. At that moment, I could see the light go on for him. I explained that effective strikers have figured out a way, their way, to get the club swinging through a forward-leaning condition during the moment of the strike. I wish I could tell you that he now shoots par, but that’s not the case. He did immediately change his intent and start hitting more powerful shots. His body dynamics improved as well. Once he had a better understanding of impact, his game improved.

2) Why is there a need for this training aid? 

Most of the thousands of golfers I’ve coached over the years lack body awareness in some way or another and I’m at the top of that list. Golfers go into a “black out” mode during their swing. It’s hard to feel what is going on during the 1-1.3 seconds of a decent swing.

As a coach, I use “awareness aids” so golfers can have certainty in their practice goals. The Tour Striker Smart Ball has been a well-received product by some of the best players in the world. Marc Warren, a Scottish Tour Professional and member of the European Tour, gave it credit for righting his game at a critical time during the end of the year, allowing him to retain his Tour Card. British Open Champion, Darren Clarke, uses the Smart Ball regularly during practice to avoid getting his trail arm stuck behind him. I can’t begin to tell you how much it helps beginners and those who struggle with intermediate wedge shots. It almost guarantees that your arms and body work together allowing for a more reliable impact. Some of my more limber students can mash full drivers with the Smart Ball. Best of all, I don’t need to be with them and they can practice effectively on their own.

3) Does this apply to all players? What about the ones who have too much lag? 

I think it is impossible to have “too much lag” if the body is working properly. The modern phrase “handle dragging” is all but impossible if the player’s lead shoulder is raising and working behind them as a result of effective use of the large muscles. I do see some people try and stay down too long and force the handle awkwardly “down the line.” If they hit it too low, I’ll encourage them to let the club “overtake” the hands during the swing, but that overtaking progression includes some forward lean during the impact interval. After the strike, the club should free-wheel and the hands/wrists can go where the physiology of their body takes them. Thankfully the army of coaches out there these days aren’t telling people to keep their head down to a fault any longer.

4) How has the “business side” of the instructional business shaped your future?

Being a teaching pro isn’t for sissies! I’ve always loved being a teacher, but it isn’t that easy to earn a great living. After my playing days, I became a Head Professional. I had the security of a day job and could teach for the love of it. A stand-alone teaching pro is a tricky gig! You either work at a country club with an audience, a public range where you kill what you eat, train a young player who becomes a world beater… you get the idea. You have to absolutely love it and be prepared to starve.

I was very lucky. I had a great intro to the teaching world when I was young and never lost my love for it. Through my good fortune with Tour Striker Training Products, I was able break away from the “day job,” guaranteed to feed my family and through the urging of Momma Striker, my wife Stacey, I left the club management role and started a Golf Academy six years ago. It has been a blast and I’ve been very fortunate.

At around the same time, I started on as a Faculty Coach for an online platform called Revolution Golf. They have done a wonderful job attracting viewers, so a lot of people around the world are exposed to my teaching style. It’s been the catalyst for my successful golf school. I’ve learned that to be a sought after coach, you have to put yourself out there. Meaning you can’t be afraid of success or criticism. If people don’t like you, grow a thicker skin. If you are genuine and care about the journey of the golfer, you’ll do great.

5) What other issues needing training aids do you see in the future?

I’m not a rocket scientist, so my training aids are very simple. To this date, no batteries required! My studio is pretty “tech’d” out with Trackman, Gears, BodiTrak, JC Video and other gadgetry. I am excited to see what happens with the breakthroughs in “virtual” golf. I think there will be some cool awarenesses occurring by looking at yourself virtually in real time from different angles. Almost like being your own coach. At worst, you might choose to not wear a certain shirt/short combo down the road.

The Wedge Guy: The easiest-to-learn golf basic

My golf learning began with this simple fact – if you don’t have a fundamentally sound hold on the golf club, it is practically impossible for your body to execute a fundamentally sound golf swing. I’m still a big believer that the golf swing is much easier to execute if you begin with the proper hold on the club.

As you might imagine, I come into contact with hundreds of golfers of all skill levels. And it is very rare to see a good player with a bad hold on the golf club. There are some exceptions, for sure, but they are very few and very far between, and they typically have beat so many balls with their poor grip that they’ve found a way to work around it.

The reality of biophysics is that the body moves only in certain ways – and the particulars of the way you hold the golf club can totally prevent a sound swing motion that allows the club to release properly through the impact zone. The wonderful thing is that anyone can learn how to put a fundamentally sound hold on the golf club, and you can practice it anywhere your hands are not otherwise engaged, like watching TV or just sitting and relaxing.

Whether you prefer an overlap, interlock or full-finger (not baseball!) grip on the club, the same fundamentals apply.  Here are the major grip faults I see most often, in the order of the frequency:

Mis-aligned hands

By this I mean that the palms of the two hands are not parallel to each other. Too many golfers have a weak left hand and strong right, or vice versa. The easiest way to learn how to hold the club with your palms aligned properly is to grip a plain wooden ruler or yardstick. It forces the hands to align properly and shows you how that feels. If you grip and re-grip a yardstick several times, then grip a club, you’ll see that the learning curve is almost immediate.

The position of the grip in the upper/left hand

I also observe many golfers who have the butt of the grip too far into the heel pad of the upper hand (the left hand for right-handed players). It’s amazing how much easier it is to release the club through the ball if even 1/4-1/2″ of the butt is beyond the left heel pad. Try this yourself to see what I mean.  Swing the club freely with just your left hand and notice the difference in its release from when you hold it at the end of the grip, versus gripping down even a half inch.

To help you really understand how this works, go to the range and hit shots with your five-iron gripped down a full inch to make the club the same length as your seven-iron. You will probably see an amazing shot shape difference, and likely not see as much distance loss as you would expect.

Too much lower (right) hand on the club

It seems like almost all golfers of 8-10 handicap or higher have the club too far into the palm of the lower hand, because that feels “good” if you are trying to control the path of the clubhead to the ball. But the golf swing is not an effort to hit at the ball – it is a swing of the club. The proper hold on the club has the grip underneath the pad at the base of the fingers. This will likely feel “weak” to you — like you cannot control the club like that. EXACTLY. You should not be trying to control the club with your lower/master hand.

Gripping too tightly

Nearly all golfers hold the club too tightly, which tenses up the forearms and prevents a proper release of the club through impact. In order for the club to move back and through properly, you must feel that the club is controlled by the last three fingers of the upper hand, and the middle two fingers of the lower hand. If you engage your thumbs and forefingers in “holding” the club, the result will almost always be a grip that is too tight. Try this for yourself. Hold the club in your upper hand only, and squeeze firmly with just the last three fingers, with the forefinger and thumb off the club entirely. You have good control, but your forearms are not tense. Then begin to squeeze down with your thumb and forefinger and observe the tensing of the entire forearm. This is the way we are made, so the key to preventing tenseness in the arms is to hold the club very lightly with the “pinchers” — the thumbs and forefingers.

So, those are what I believe are the four fundamentals of a good grip. Anyone can learn them in their home or office very quickly. There is no easier way to improve your ball striking consistency and add distance than giving more attention to the way you hold the golf club.

​​​Tour Striker Smart Ball Review

The Tour Striker Smart Ball is one of the few training devices that can help you throughout your entire swing. It is a functional partial swing trainer, meaning it can help in certain areas of your swing. It is also a full swing trainer, which means it can be used through the entire swing as well. We have a list of golf swing training aids that we use daily with our students. With the increasing popularity of the Smart Ball, we decided to test it out to see if it could make our list of favorite trainers.

What is the Tour Striker Smart Ball?

​The Smart Ball is an inflatable ball connected to a lanyard that hangs around our neck. The way you use the Smart Ball is by hanging the inflated ball from your neck. You approach the ball (or just get in your swing stance if not using a ball) and now the ball is hanging freely.

​​Now you place the ball between the forearms and, as you swing your club, you try to keep the ball in place between your forearms. This training tool is what is known as a connection device. It is meant to train the arms to work synchronously, and it is meant to train the arms to work in unison with your body, especially the shoulders and hips.

As your arms work together with each other and your body, the result is a more unified contact which leads to cleaner contact and straighter, more powerful shots.

One of the claims of those that tout the greatness of the Tour Striker Smart Ball is that players of all skill levels, from beginner to advanced, will benefit from training with it. Furthermore, it supposedly works with every club swing (drives, iron shots, chips, putts, etc.).

We, of course, were skeptical of this claim. Having thoroughly tested dozens of different training products, there are only a select few that can actually provide benefit to most golfers.

Testing the Striker Smart Ball

As is always the case when we test new products, we started with our own team members and took the Smart Ball to the range. The Smart Ball is very simplistic in its design, which lends itself to being very easy to use. Put the lanyard around your neck. Inflate the ball. Keep the ball between your arms during your swing. No instructions or further help from videos was necessary. It may be the easiest to use trainer we've tested to date. On our team we have a good mix of intermediate to advanced golfers and everything in between. All of us enjoyed using the Smart Ball. The simple design and ease of use are great and among the best we've seen. And we were amazed at how it truly could be used through the entire golf swing, from the beginning of the backswing all the way to the top of the follow through on both drives and iron shots. It gave each of us something slightly different to focus on based on our individual swing differences and tendencies, which was remarkable. As we moved on to testing the device with pitches and chips, the Smart Ball continued to impress. Again, each of us found that it was helpful in creating better contact throughout our shots. When we took it to the putting green, it didn't prove to be very helpful. It also didn't hinder us. It just felt arbitrary, which might be because we already have the fundamentals down in our putting swings.

​Whenever we get positive results through our own testing of new training aids, we start to incorporate them into our instruction with students. This is where we really can measure effectiveness and improvement. Most of our students really enjoyed using the Smart Ball, and it helped them feel how the arms and body move together. Using before and after videos, many of our students saw marked improvement in their swing, most commonly in the backswing and downswing. Where the Smart Ball fell short was with brand new to beginner golfers. For many, swinging a golf club can feel really strange at first. And some take a while before they start feeling somewhat comfortable swinging a club. When we added the Smart Ball to the mix with these types of players, the result was mostly frustration. Interestingly, however, newcomers and newly beginners did benefit a lot from using the Smart Ball to learn proper putting form.

​​​The Smart Ball is one of the simplest to use trainers we've ever tested. It is also one of the most affordable swing aids out there. We do not recommend the Smart Ball for newcomers to the sport, except for learning to putt. For you newcomers, our top recommendation would be the Orange Whip .
