Canadian Open 2024: How to Watch and Stream All the PGA Tour Golf From Anywhere

Nick Taylor looks to defend his crown as the Tour heads to the Hamilton Golf and Country Club.

tour tech golf

Nick Taylor will try to make history once more as he looks to defend his title at the Canadian Open this weekend.

An epic 72-foot playoff putt saw Taylor clinch last year's title ahead of Tommy Fleetwood, a shot that saw him become the first Canadian to win this tournament since Pat Fletcher back in 1954.

Taylor's win last year ended a run of two wins in a row for Rory McIlroy, and the Irish star is being widely backed by the bookies to return to winning ways in this tournament alongside last year's runner-up, Fleetwood.

Keep reading to find out the best live TV streaming services to use to watch each day of the tournament live wherever you are in the world.

How to watch the the Canadian Open 2024 online from anywhere using a VPN

If you find yourself unable to view the tournament locally, you may need a different way to watch -- that's where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds by encrypting your traffic, and it's also a great idea if you're traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.

With a VPN, you're able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the tournament. So if your internet provider or mobile carrier has stuck you with an IP address that incorrectly shows your location in a blackout zone, a VPN can correct that problem by giving you an IP address in your correct, nonblackout area. Most VPNs, like our Editors' Choice, ExpressVPN , make it really easy to do this.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US, UK and Canada, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you're streaming. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

Looking for other options? Be sure to check out some of the other great VPN deals taking place right now.

Best VPN for streaming

ExpressVPN is our current best VPN pick for people who want a reliable and safe VPN, and it works on a variety of devices. It's normally $13 a month, but you can sign up for an annual subscription to ExpressVPN and get three months free for $100 -- the equivalent of $6.67 a month, and a savings of 49%.

Note that ExpressVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Linear TV coverage in the US is split between The Golf Channel and CBS. Streaming service Peacock also boasts the same coverage as The Golf Channel, while Paramount Plus will be offering streams of CBS's coverage of the tournament's latter stages.

ESPN's standalone streaming service costs $11 a month or $110 for an annual subscription.  Read our ESPN Plus review .

Paramount Plus has two main subscription plans in the US: Essential for $6 a month and Premium for $12 a month. Both offer coverage of the Canadian Open 2024.

Newcomers can take advantage of a 30-day free trial, while students may qualify for a 25% discount. Black Friday savings are also still available, though we don't know how long for.

Quick tips for streaming the Canadian Open 2024 using a VPN

  • With four variables at play -- your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN -- your experience and success when streaming may vary.
  • If you don't see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the "search for city or country" option.
  • If you're having trouble getting the tournament after you've turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs -- like Roku -- don't have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you'll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you're using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
  • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network's sports app, you'll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help, since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
  • And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you're using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend  Brave .

Five things to know: Hamilton Golf and Country Club

Change Text Size

Hamilton Golf and Country Club, one of Canada’s top-ranked facilities, will host the RBC Canadian Open for the seventh time this week.

But the course will look very different than when the PGA TOUR was last here in 2019. Not long after Rory McIlroy’s dominant win five years ago, the club underwent a nearly $8.5-million restoration under world-renowned architect Martin Ebert.

Hamilton commissioned Ebert’s firm – which also advises on eight of the 10 venues in The Open rota, including this year’s host, Royal Troon – in 2014 to give the club a throwback look to its original Harry Colt design. Having spent time at Pine Valley in 1913, Colt came to Hamilton a year later. The official club opening was in 1916.

Ebert and design partner Tom Mackenzie had never done a restoration effort like the one at Hamilton. Most of the work was overseen from afar due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the travel restrictions, but it worked.

Golf Digest named Ebert’s work on Hamilton the "Best Renovation" of the year in January 2023.

“Harry Colt is one of the world’s greatest – if not the greatest – architects so having one of his rare North American golf courses is a keystone element of what makes Hamilton special,” said Andrew Harvie, an authority in Canadian golf architecture and founder of Beyond the Contour. “In technical terms, the routing is brilliant, with the layout largely routed in triangles around the hilly property with the Ancaster Creek on the bottom.

“How the layout handles the severity of the property while giving players fresh looks and strategies on every tee is a clinic in routing.”

With the RBC Canadian Open returning to Hamilton – before heading to TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley in 2025, a debut venue – here’s everything else you need to know about the iconic Canadian club.

It's the same but different

Hamilton’s membership voted in favor to proceed with a Golf Course Improvement Plan Project about a month before McIlroy’s seven-shot triumph at the RBC Canadian Open in 2019. The plan included reconstructing tees, bunkers and greens on all 27 holes (the West/South PGA TOUR layout along with the East). There would also be a new irrigation system, practice putting green and new practice area.

“The players want to enjoy the experience of playing the golf course so that’s a big component of (an event’s success) and the amazing thing is that it was really well received, and it was fantastic before,” tournament director Bryan Crawford said. “The fact that it’s gotten even better – it’s almost unthinkable that it could have gotten better than it already was.”

Ebert said Hamilton’s topography was always its distinguishing factor.

“The impressive nature of the terrain, that was the key thing,” he said. “Whether it’s a new piece of land or an existing course, how many times do you stand on a tee and have your breath taken away? That’s pretty regular at Hamilton. That was one of the first takeaways.”

A legend still called the shots

Although Colt only came to Hamilton once, Ebert said he and his team wanted to “pay as much respect” to Colt as possible. The club had all the old plans, with descriptions of the bunkers, which Ebert called “so important” to the appearance of courses and specific holes.

“I was really pleased how they worked out,” Ebert said, “especially given our restrictions on travelling and not being able to get there during any of the construction. That was a real positive for me.”

The club’s original set of 1914 drawings from Colt included ragged edges, additional depth and “fescue eyebrows” near the bunkers, which players will see once again. SCOREGolf.com reported in 2021 – when the course first re-opened – that Ebert compared Hamilton’s bunker renovation to the recent work he did at Royal Portrush.

Tech provided COVID-19 workaround

Ebert was expected to make about 12 visits to Hamilton for the project but those were all cancelled due to the pandemic. Drone technology, 3D video and even virtual reality allowed him and his team to review the progress, finalize approvals and make changes remotely.

He finally saw the course in person in September 2021.

“It would have been far better to review our design and the contractor work on the ground, there’s no doubt about that,” Ebert said. “But we couldn’t. As a result of the techniques we developed during COVID, and since our detailed plans give so much information to the contractor, we had the confidence we could still pull it off to an extremely high standard.”

He admits it took one hole (the fourth) to really settle in on a process for the contractor and Ebert, but they got rolling quickly after the virtual back-and-forth style was agreed upon.

“It was a challenge, but we weren’t petrified because we do really concise levels (of planning),” Ebert said. “Having the VR headset and 3D camera was so instrumental with the bunker shape, bunker depth and green surrounds. It was exciting to develop those innovative techniques and we’ve used them in other projects like doing bunkers in Chile.

“Doing Hamilton with those techniques taught us a lot.”

Even the toughest holes got longer

The golf course will play 112 yards longer than it did in 2019. The par-3 sixth, the second-most difficult hole at the 2019 RBC Canadian Open, will play 25 yards longer. The par-4 seventh (new back tee) will play 35 yards longer.

The par-4 11th hole (21 additional yards) and par-4 14th (24) will require additional pop, as will the par-5 17th, which now measures 580 yards (30 yards longer with an entirely new green site that has been pushed back and to the left), and the par-4 18th (the hardest hole during the 2019 Canadian Open got an additional 11 yards).

Ebert said he’s hopeful the course will demand more precise ball-striking. The new greens will have more areas for pin positions and the bunkering will force players to think their way around the course.

The objective of the renovation, according to Harvie, was to create a cohesive version of the course, which had received numerous tweaks by numerous architects over the generations.

“In the renovation, they addressed all these,” he said. “Trees are out to allow some rediscovered views across the tumbling property, while mow lines are back expanded out, and greens and bunkers are uniform and consistent across the entire property.”

'The Rink' returns

A smiling Ebert said he never could have imagined that one of the holes on a course he’s worked on would be wrapped in hockey boards. But "The Rink" (in its sixth year) will make another appearance at Hamilton.

The par-3 14th hole will have the hockey-inspired atmosphere, complete with an organist, which is new this year. Ebert, who was in Hamilton for the 2019 Canadian Open, called it a “brilliant atmosphere” at The Rink.

“When players were coming on to the tee – that was fantastic,” he said. “I really, really did enjoy that. I’m not sure it’ll happen at The Open. But even there, they want a good par 3 to excite the crowds. But nothing quite as intense as a cauldron of atmosphere like we’ll have with the hockey hole.”

“It's a marquee hole for us,” added Crawford. “It allows for us to bring it tournament to tournament when we go to different venues. I don’t think anybody could have dreamed when that idea was brought forward that it would have grown to what it is today.”

“All of us at the PGA Tour carry a heavy heart and will for a long time to come,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said, his voice cracking at times. “When you lose a family member, you can never quite put all the pieces back together.”

Murray’s parents, two siblings and fiancée were not at Memorial Park, a garden that sits below the first tee at Muirfield Village, its rock walls filled with bronze plaques of players who have been honored at the Memorial over the years.

Next to the podium was Murray’s golf bag, along with a large framed photograph of his reaction to making a 40-foot birdie in a playoff to win the Sony Open in January.

His parents said he died by suicide on May 25 , one day after he walked off the course at Colonial with two holes remaining in the second round of the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Among those who spoke at the celebration was Masters champion Scottie Scheffler, who came to know Murray better in the early part of the year, as Murray was trying to get his fiancée more involved with some of the players’ wives.

They played a nine-hole practice round at The Players Championship, Murray and Chesson Hadley against Scheffler and Sam Burns.

“The look on his face when I gave him $100 on the ninth green is something I’ll remember for a long time because you couldn’t wipe that smile off his face,” Scheffler said. “Without a doubt, he loved being out here inside the ropes.”

Scheffler referred to him as a “sweet man” on more than one occasion, and he was weeping when he walked away from the podium, then buried his head in his wife’s shoulder.

Murray’s death was a shock to players, caddies and everyone involved in the tour. He was a prodigious talent as a junior, won the Barbasol Championship in Kentucky as a rookie and struggled with alcoholism and tour discipline and anxiety. He spoke at the Sony Open about feeling like a failure for not living up to expectations.

Webb Simpson, who first met an 8-year-old Murray in their home state of North Carolina, is not at the Memorial this year. He had another close friend, Russell Henley, read his thoughts.

Jay Green, who began caddying for him the week of the Sony Open, told of his hopes to buy a Rolex watch if they had a good year. Murray won the Sony Open and bought a Rolex.

For Monahan, Murray’s death was personal.

This week marks one year since the PGA Tour did a secretive and shocking deal with the Saudi backers of LIV Golf, and Murray was front and center at a player meeting the afternoon of June 6 to hammer Monahan for doing the deal and not telling anyone.

Monahan a week later stepped away for more than a month with anxiety-induced physical and mental issues. During that time away, Monahan turned off his cellphone for a month.

“We had a player meeting in Canada that all of you know was intense and heated. Grayson and others were extremely vocal about their displeasure about my decision to keep the membership in the heart. The criticism, it was 100% warranted,” Monahan said.

He said when he finally turned his phone back on during his leave, one of the first text messages he saw was from Murray.

“A line in that text will always stay with me — ‘Jay I just want you to get healthy. I know everything is doing to work out for our tour and for the better,’” Monahan said. “He offered not condemnation but compassion. Instead of walking away from me, he offered to walk with me.

“I’ll always be thankful for this act of kindness, and I’m not alone.”

Monahan said similar stories were shared in a private service for Murray and his family on Monday.

Players, along with Memorial founder Jack Nicklaus and wife Barbara, filled the seats. Tour officials stood flanked to the left, with dozens of other players, caddies, equipment representatives and agents filling the ground to the right. More than a hundred spectators watched from a hill above the garden as a bagpipe played “Amazing Grace” at the end.

“I can only offer the assurance that Grayson’s memory will serve as a continual reminder that the PGA Tour is a brotherhood that transcends competition,” Monahan said. “And our foremost responsibility is to care for each other and be kind. I can’t imagine a prouder legacy.”

Texas Tech alum Sofia Garcia balancing the dream and job aspects of LPGA Tour life

tour tech golf

There are layers to the term dream job. Sofia Garcia can attest to that.

On the one hand, Garcia is living out her dream of being a pro golfer, something she’s wanted to be for much of her life. On the other, it’s still a job, same as any other. Every high point in her time on the pro circuit has been met with struggles and challenges.

Traveling and the scheduling have been big ones. Being so far from her native Portugal, where the family she left to join the Texas Tech women’s golf team still resides, can be tough. She gets back home whenever she can, usually around Christmas, and she’s found her own foundation here in the U.S. She’s set her base in Orlando with friends and coaches, each of them important to earning her way onto the LPGA Tour in 2023.

Garcia admits life constantly on the go can be trying, but she also tries to remind herself of those highs. Like coming face-to-face with one of the greats, Annika Sörentam, during her first appearance in the U.S. Women’s Open in 2022.

That was an eye-opening experience, a reminder of the level Garcia has achieved and the heights she still hopes to reach. The next step in that journey takes place this week when Garcia returns to the U.S. Women’s Open for the second time looking to show how she’s grown since her first experience.

"I got to make my first cut, my family was there," Garcia said, "so there were a lot of things that were really neat in that first event. ... I have really fond memories of that week."

Garcia was successful on the course well before she moved to Lubbock in 2016. She became the first woman to win back-to-back South American Amateur titles and played for the Paraguay team in the World Amateur Championship.

But golf wasn’t her first athletic passion. That would be soccer, a far more popular sport in Portugal — which is about the size of Indiana. Portugal is home to 75 golf courses while Indiana has 416.

Garcia’s father, Jose, steered her to golf at a young age, but she could never quite give up soccer. That proved costly when, during a pick-up game before her sophomore year, she suffered a torn ACL that forced her to redshirt.

“That was a major thing in my life,” Garcia said. “That also was another wake up call for me. … It took me out three months. … It was really tough for me to come back from it to get to a certain level.”

Soccer is no longer a pastime for Garcia. The stakes are too high now, so she won’t be returning to the pitch until she retires.

That may be a while if her career continues to progress. She left Texas Tech in the spring of 2021, having earned her bachelor’s degree and most of her Master’s in five years at the school, and decided to turn pro.

She used what money she had in her savings, relied on friends and kind hosts to put her up in their homes, and hit the mini-tournament circuit in Texas. Garcia earned membership to the Epson Tour for the 2022 season and achieved her LPGA Tour card for the 2023 campaign.

Garcia’s first tournament as a full-fledged member of the LPGA came in Gold Canyon, Arizona, for the LPGA Drive On Championship in March of last year. Walking onto the course at Superstition Mountain Golf & Country Club is when reality set in.

“I’m like, oh my goodness,” Garcia recalled. “This is where I want to be for however many years and this is what I’ve been working for. It took a while for it to hit, especially when I just qualified, but I remembered that moment last year and being like, OK, this is where I want to be.”

Her experiences since then have led her to the path of balancing the dream and the job. Not everybody is cut out for the lifestyle of a pro golfer, especially on the women’s circuit where the money is far less than on the men’s side of the sport.

Now 25 years old, Garcia has been away from her home for nearly a decade. She said she’s learned to grow and mature in that capacity, not having much of a choice but to do so. It has turned her into someone with a perspective on life many don’t reach.

“I think we’re blessed with what we do and with the talent we have to get to this point,” Garcia said. “We get this brilliant, this unique thing, and we get to travel through the United States but other countries as well, and you get to know a lot of great people out there. Everybody who’s on the tour obviously loves competition.

“So we get to experience all of that, but it’s a mix. It’s a job like even when you’re playing well or whatever. … That’s a constant thing that you work with. You try to work the fact that you’re doing what you want, and you know what you do while also making sure you take care of everything else.”

Adam Scott is looking to keep alive a major streak that dates to 2001

LANCASTER, Pa. (AP) — Adam Scott would rather not miss the cut at any major. His early exit from the PGA Championship two weeks ago was particularly bad timing because it knocked him out of the top 60 in the world ranking for the first time in nearly six years.

It also was the cutoff to be exempt for the U.S. Open, and now the Australian has two weeks to earn a spot at Pinehurst No. 2.

At stake is the longest active streak playing the majors. Scott hasn’t missed one since the 2001 U.S. Open at Southern Hills when he was 20 and just starting out on the European tour.

“I think my game is in better shape than results are showing,” Scott said last week when he arrived at Colonial. “I know pretty much everyone who is not in the top 10 in the world is probably saying that, but that’s how I feel.”

He tied for 12th at Colonial, so he at least has a fighting chance. That moved him up four spots to No. 58. Scott is playing the Canadian Open this week, and the USGA will take the top 60 in the world after the Memorial the following week.

A good performance this week would go a long way. Otherwise, he heads off to 36-hole qualifying the Monday after the Canadian Open.

The last time Scott was out of the top 60, in 2018, he played the U.S. Open qualifier in Columbus, Ohio, and two-putted for par from 30 feet on the last hole to avoid a playoff. That kept his streak alive. Scott said back then his goal was to win the U.S. Open, not just qualify for it. He missed the cut at Shinnecock Hills.

Sergio Garcia has played every U.S. Open dating to 2000 at Pebble Beach, and that streak is in peril after he was the odd man out last week in a 7-for-6 playoff at the 36-hole qualifier in Dallas.

He was first alternate. The U.S. Open will rank the order of alternates from its 13 qualifying sites based on strength of field and how many spots each qualifier received. Spots already are set aside in case anyone — Scott, maybe? — cracks the top 60. So there’s still hope for Garcia.

That isn’t the case for Patrick Reed. He withdrew from the Dallas qualifier and has no other path into the U.S. Open. Reed has played in every major starting with the 2014 Masters.

US OPEN QUALIFYING

The new PGA Tour schedule means a new look for U.S. Open qualifying in Ohio.

For years, the Columbus qualifier used two courses because it was packed with PGA Tour players who had just finished the Memorial. Ohio State’s Scarlet course and Kinsale Golf and Fitness Club were to be used this year.

But now only the Scarlet course is being used for the Columbus qualifier on Monday, and only two players expected to play Memorial will be there.

One big reason is the Memorial is a signature event with about 70 players, down from its usual field of 120 players.

Another is the schedule. The tour previously went from the Memorial to the Canadian Open to the U.S. Open, and qualifying was the Monday between Memorial and Canada.

But the Memorial and Canadian Open have swapped weeks, so the qualifier is the Monday before the Memorial.

Other players in the Memorial field are either staying in Canada if they are playing this week, or going to New Jersey and Florida sites. Only 10 players expected to be at the Memorial are not already exempt for the U.S. Open.

It would appear Adam Scott has one of the four sponsor exemptions for the Memorial because he is signed up for the Springfield, Ohio, site.

SHE CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW

Brooke Henderson showed up on the LPGA Tour last summer with a new look — glasses.

“I’ve always had trouble with my eyesight,” Henderson said ahead of the U.S. Women’s Open. “I’ve never really been able to see the ball land or certain things since the start of my career, but I was a feel player, so I just really leaned into that feel.”

She said she would have to ask her caddie, sister Brittany, where the ball went. Was it on the green, the fringe?

“Then I decided I wanted to be able to see where the ball was going and I wanted to maybe have a little bit better feel around the greens, which I think the glasses really help because I can see it a little clearer,” she said.

Henderson said she did not have contacts but might consider them in a year or two.

“For now, just glasses,” she said.

Massachusetts native and Stanford senior Michael Thorbjornsen is headed straight to the PGA Tour as the No. 1 player in the PGA Tour University ranking.

Thorbjornsen missed the 54-hole cut in the NCAA championship, but his position atop the ranking was secured when British Amateur champion Christo Lamprecht was subbed out of Georgia Tech’s lineup because of a back injury.

Thorbjornsen won three times and made the cut in four professional tournaments over the last two years, included a fourth-place finish at the Travelers Championship in 2022.

He now can accept PGA Tour membership upon turning pro and will be eligible for all open, full-field tournaments the rest of 2024 and all of 2025.

The last player to get the No. 1 ranking was Ludvig Aberg at Texas Tech, and matching the Swede’s feats won’t be easy. Aberg won on the European tour, was picked for the Ryder Cup team and tied the PGA Tour’s 72-hole scoring record by winning at Sea Island.

“PGA Tour U is, I think, one of the best programs in all of sports,” Thorbjornsen said. “What they’ve done, creating a pathway to the PGA Tour ... it gives students and us golfers reasons to stay for four years, and you can’t really pass up on the opportunities that they present to you.”

Thorbjornsen missed the fall with a stress fracture in his back and Lamprecht briefly passed him. But Thorbjornsen won the Cabo Collegiate and he finished with five straight top 10s going into the NCAAs.

Scottie Scheffler closed with a 1-over 71 at Colonial, ending 26 consecutive tournaments where he was par or better in the final round. His previous fourth round over par was a 73 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March 2023. ... Juli Inkster and Jeongeun Lee6 are the only U.S. Women’s Open champions in the last 25 years to record a top 10 in their title defense. ... LIV Golf League’s season-ending team championship is moving to Maridoe Golf Club in the Dallas area on Sept. 20-22. It was held last year at Trump National Doral. That gives Texas two LIV events this year.

STAT OF THE WEEK

Five players from Europe’s winning Ryder Cup team are playing the Canadian Open. None of the Americans from Marco Simone is in the field except for captain Zach Johnson.

“Bryson was box office and really, really helped that tournament. So yeah, we do miss those guys. As I’ve said before, it’s hard to believe we miss Patrick Reed.” — Padraig Harrington on the PGA Championship.

Skogen leads No. 11 Tech at NCAA Championships

May 24, 2024 | Men's Golf

By: Chris Williams

CARLSBAD, Calif. — The No. 11 Texas Tech men's golf team kicked off its run at the NCAA Championships on Friday with 18 holes at the par-72, 7,538-yard North Course at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa. A 2-over-par effort from Baard Skogen led the way for the Red Raiders in round one, as the team fired a collective 21-over-par (309) on a day the course average was nearly four strokes over par (75.84). Less than two weeks removed from earning top medalist honors at the Baton Rouge Regional, Skogen once again emerged as Tech's postseason anchor with a solid   opening round in the finals. A bogey-free, 3-under-par front nine highlighted Skogen's day after shooting 5-over-par over his first nine holes; the senior ended the day with a team-best 2-over-par 74 and tied for 41st on the individual leaderboard. Two shots behind Skogen was Calum Scott , who fired a steady even-par across his back nine before a rocky front nine muddied his round one card. The junior ultimately finished his day with a 4-over-par 76 and sits tied for 81st among the 154 players who completed the opening round. The Red Raiders will tee off round two of the NCAA Championships from hole No. 1 starting at 7:35 a.m. PT. NCAA Championships Leaderboard (Rd. 1) T-1. Virginia: 290 (+2) T-1. Arizona: 290 (+2) 3.
