Charging Forward: Electric Cars and the Eco-Friendly Tourism Movement
Eco-conscious exploration: electric vehicles in sustainable tourism, zero-emission mobility: paving the way for greener travel, tourist-friendly charging infrastructure: an essential component, enhancing the visitor experience: eco-friendly adventures, collaborative sustainability: stakeholders shaping the future, a pathway to sustainable adventures: strategies for success, a greener road ahead: electric cars transforming travel, conclusion: electric cars driving towards a greener horizon.
In a world increasingly focused on sustainability, the travel industry is undergoing a transformation towards more eco-friendly practices. Electric vehicles (EVs) are emerging as a driving force in this shift, with their potential to reduce carbon emissions and enhance the travel experience. This article explores the integration of electric cars into sustainable tourism initiatives, highlighting how these vehicles are reshaping the way we explore the world while promoting greener travel experiences.
Sustainable tourism emphasizes minimizing negative environmental and social impacts, making electric vehicles a natural fit for eco-conscious travel. Electric cars produce zero tailpipe emissions, reducing the carbon footprint of travelers and contributing to cleaner air in popular tourist destinations.
The adoption of electric vehicles in tourism:
- Reduces Air Pollution: Electric cars mitigate air pollution in sensitive natural areas, ensuring pristine landscapes for future generations to enjoy.
- Quieter Journeys: The quiet operation of electric vehicles enhances the tranquility of scenic routes, offering tourists a more immersive and peaceful travel experience.
- Low Environmental Impact: EVs significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions, supporting efforts to preserve fragile ecosystems and maintain biodiversity.
Developing a robust charging infrastructure is crucial for the successful integration of electric vehicles into sustainable tourism:
- Destination Charging Stations: Charging stations located near popular tourist sites, hotels, and attractions make it convenient for travelers to charge their electric cars.
- Scenic Routes and Charging Stops: Mapping out scenic routes with charging stops encourages tourists to explore while keeping their EVs charged.
- Renewable Energy Integration: Combining charging stations with renewable energy sources aligns with the principles of sustainable tourism and minimizes the carbon footprint of charging operations.
- Silent Discovery: Electric cars provide a quieter, less intrusive way to explore nature reserves, wildlife habitats, and cultural sites.
- Extended Journeys: Electric vehicles’ increasing range capabilities enable travelers to embark on longer journeys without compromising the environment.
- Educational Opportunities: Electric car tours can educate tourists about the benefits of sustainable transportation and inspire them to adopt greener practices in their daily lives.
- Tourism Industry Partnerships: Collaboration between travel companies, car rental agencies, and charging infrastructure providers promotes seamless EV rental experiences for tourists.
- Government Incentives: Governments can encourage the adoption of electric cars by offering incentives, such as tax breaks or reduced charging fees, to tourists and local EV users alike.
- Public Awareness Campaigns: Stakeholders can work together to raise awareness about sustainable travel options, showcasing the benefits of electric cars in reducing environmental impact.
- Tour Operator Collaboration: Collaborative efforts between tour operators, car rental companies, and charging infrastructure providers can create seamless EV rental options for travelers.
- Infrastructure Expansion: Developing a widespread and accessible charging network ensures that tourists can confidently choose electric vehicles for their journeys.
- Educational Initiatives: Raising awareness among tourists about the benefits of electric cars and their role in sustainable tourism can drive adoption and advocacy.
The integration of electric vehicles into sustainable tourism signifies a departure from conventional travel practices. By embracing electric mobility, destinations are sending a powerful message about their commitment to preserving natural beauty, reducing pollution, and offering authentic, eco-friendly experiences to visitors. As electric cars continue to evolve and charging infrastructure expands, the symbiotic relationship between sustainable tourism and electric mobility will flourish, ushering in a future where exploration and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.
Electric vehicles are driving a new era of sustainable tourism, aligning with the ethos of environmentally responsible travel. By integrating electric cars into travel experiences, we can explore the world while leaving a lighter carbon footprint. As destinations increasingly embrace electric mobility, they not only enhance their appeal to environmentally conscious travelers but also contribute to a global movement towards more responsible and sustainable tourism practices.

Need a report that reflects how COVID-19 has impacted this market and its growth?
Tourism Vehicle Rental Market Analysis
The Tourism Vehicle Rental Market was valued at USD 61.28 billion in 2021 and is expected to reach USD 97.23 billion by 2027 registering a CAGR of around 8% during the forecast period (2022 - 2027).
The COVID-19 pandemic hindered the growth of the Tourism Rental Market as there were global factory shutdowns, travel bans, and border lockdowns, to combat and contain the outbreak, impacting every industry and economy worldwide. As tourism is a huge market, the demand for vehicle rentals halted with continuous lockdowns across the world.
However, as the unlocking process began restoring economic activities Tourism vehicle rental market is expected to witness nominal growth during the forecast period. People tend to prefer rental vehicles to any other means of transportation to maintain social distancing and hygiene protocols.
Other driving factors of the tourism vehicle rental market are, comfort, quality of life, freedom of moment, affordability, and low cost of traveling. The luxury vehicles segment will grow at the fastest pace during the forecast period owing to increased travel budgets of tourists around the world.
Region-wise, Asia-Pacific is one of the fastest-growing regional markets for tourism vehicle rental within the forecast period due to the growing population coupled with transportation issues in the region. Tourism vehicle rental service is very useful in Asian countries like India, Australia, Cambodia, Japan, China, etc. North America is expected to witness significant growth amid rising road trips by people during forecast period.
Tourism Vehicle Rental Market Trends
This section covers the major market trends shaping the Tourism Vehicle Rental Market according to our research experts:
Online Booking Expected to Witness Significant Growth during the Forecast Period
Increased concern and awareness about the containment of the virus have primarily led to an increase in vehicle rental options. Additionally, the tourism vehicle rental market also provides the option of increased mobility without the concern of paying the costs associated with vehicle ownership. These services are offered via websites and through other online platforms attributing to the growth of the market.
Increasing penetration of the internet and smartphone among consumers is estimated to shift consumers' inclination toward online booking mode. The growth is attributed to consumers' preference to have detailed access to the offerings of accommodation, amenities, and other benefits. For instance, in 2021 more than 60% of the total vehicle rental booking were made through online means. Additionally, owing to the increased internet usage, this number is expected to cross 70% by 2027.
With the growing trend in technology, renting a vehicle through online booking has become the most preferred choice of customers over the past few years. Moreover, it provides additional facilities to monitor a rental vehicle's operation, performance, and maintenance in real-time. Such features are tremendous assets for drivers and fleet managers, enabling them to better identify risks and implement timely improvements to their rental services.
Value for money, convenience, and search for authentic travel experiences are major factors fueling the growth of online booking. The increasing number of startups and third-party travel booking companies are offering services via application and website only. Hence, consumers are shifting their preferences from offline booking mode to online. These aforementioned factors are boosting the growth of online booking mode.

Rising Demand for Tourism Rental Vehicles in North America
The United States is the leader in the tourism vehicle rental market as major car-renting companies have their fleets in almost all the major cities. The size of the fleet for any player depends on the number of tourists preferring to rent a vehicle locally and the volume of foreign passengers visiting a city. Canada has a large domestic and foreign tourism industry.
- Being the second-largest country in the world, Canada's incredible geographical variety and the presence of around 20 world heritage sites are significant tourist attractions across the country. Much of the country's tourism is centered in regions like Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver/Whistler, Niagara Falls, Vancouver Island, Calgary/Canadian Rockies, British Columbia's Okanagan Valley, and the national capital region Ottawa. Therefore, these regions are some major hotspots for tourism vehicle renting.
Europe is also expected to see positive growth during the forecast period. The main driving factors behind corporations expanding their fleets are a good macroeconomic outlook and the government's expansionary policies. Fleet managers are increasingly choosing low-emission vehicles such as electric vehicles and hybrids as the government adopts regulations against polluting diesel automobiles. As leasing is a reasonable car finance option because of the significant residual risks involved with such vehicles, it is expected to discourage van rental companies to expand in the region. Considering the update of electric vehicles, OEMs are launching electric vans in the region. For instance,
- In May 2021, Opel has unveiled its two new vans Movano and Movano-e. The vans are available in two powertrain option such as diesel and electric. The vans are also equipped with High-tech assistance systems for protection of all road users. The vans are available across rest of Europe such as in Poland, Netherlands, Sweden, Greece etc.
Apart from these factors, the increasing demand for rental vehicles is mainly driven by people's interest in road trips and the rising importance of comfort and safety in the wake of the pandemic. The tourism rental market is expected to grow gradually as transport operations returned to their normal functioning with a new normal, i.e., following social security guidelines for safety.

![tourism of cars](https://www.traveldailynews.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/78842.jpg)
Auto-tourism appeared in the early twentieth century, but it has become popular recently. All because many people began to have their own cars, as well as improved road quality.
In many cases, travel by car is more pleasant and convenient, although it is also not ideal.
Modern cars are so diverse that everyone will find a car to his liking. You can buy a car for travel, a house on wheels or an SUV. The crossover can easily accommodate a family or a group of friends. The only thing you need to choose companions. But there are also those who prefer cars to planes or trains. Why? Let's look at the pros and cons of automobile tourism.
- Freedom of movement and route. Sometimes you want to stop halfway to admire the beauty or take a cup of coffee at the gas station – the opportunity is definitely there!
- Masses of impressions and a constant sense of adventure. Especially if you go on a trip with the company.
- All things at your fingertips. It is always possible to get a thermos cup from the luggage without disturbing the stranger traveling companion.
- You can take any luggage with you, no one limits you on weight or size, except the size and capacity of the trunk.
- Your pet is always with you. No need to torture your friend in the luggage compartment or in a cage.
- However, every aspect of our lives has not only advantages but also disadvantages.
Disadvantages
- The cost of gasoline and toll roads. Sometimes traveling in your own car can be more expensive than flying or traveling by train.
- Breakdown of the car. For example, a punctured wheel. The owner of the car and those who travel with him will have to deal with this trouble.
- Fines for traffic violations and speed limits, which await at every step.
- Accidents. Unfortunately, they sometimes occur on the roads at the most unforeseen moments.
- Fatigue. Even the most experienced drivers after a few hours of continuous driving need to rest. It is good if you can swap with someone during the trip, but not always it is possible.
- Passing the border. Sometimes this moment takes a very long time and is exhausting.
Check your car before you travel Before you travel, you need to take your car in for a checkup. Remember that even if you're an ace at driving, there may be a lot you don't know about how things work in the car. Don't skimp on professional mechanics, have them inspect your car before you travel, and you'll know for sure that it's okay.
Any motorist can get into a bad situation. Skills and the most reliable car do not guarantee that you will not get into an accident. You should always be prepared for trouble. Here is what should be in the car in case of emergency:
- first aid kit;
- spare tire;
- fire extinguisher;
- technical fluids;
- emergency stop sign.
Where to start on road trips It is impossible to get lost on the Ring Road (Route 1): the Icelandic ring road is well paved, there are markings everywhere, and signs with the number 1 repeatedly confirm that you are on the right track. The Icelandic "circular" passes through 18 cities and covers the main attractions of the country. It's a great idea for a road trip: you'll see the geyser valleys and see the 60-meter Seljalandsfoss waterfall from all sides. Also on this road, you can see Skaugafoss waterfall, Eyjafjallajökull glacier, Skougar village, Vik – the southernmost town in Iceland with black beaches, and much more.

Road Trip Car Characteristics
Passenger space: People turn cranky when they aren't comfortable after hours on the road. There needs to be space for everyone to stretch out.
Cargo space: At the very minimum, you'll be bringing luggage along and maybe also camping gear or tubes for floating the river. Make sure there's space for your gear.
Fuel economy: Stopping for gas on a road trip can get expensive. Fuel efficiency, particularly from hybrid powertrains, can ease the pain of stopping at the pump.
Infotainment: An AM/FM radio is no longer sufficient for most people. An infotainment system that's easy to use while driving and can connect to smartphones is key.
Safety tech: Driving long distances causes fatigue, and fatigue causes accidents. Modern driver-assistance features can help you stay alert and in your lane.
Reliability: No one wants to be the car in the breakdown lane while on their road trip. A good predicted reliability score shows that a particular model has on average been a solid performer over time.

Self-driving cars, also known as autonomous vehicles or, colloquially, robotaxis, have been driving the streets of San Francisco in some form since 2009 and have been operating commercially since August. The cars are also shaping up as the city’s latest tourist attraction.
De Clercq, 42, who splits his time between New Jersey and Sardinia, where he owns restaurants and bars and rents villas, is an avid traveler.
“I love exploring and doing new things,” he said. “I knew that I definitely wanted to get a ride while I was in town.”
What, where and how to ride
Conversations abound on Reddit and the social platform X, with visitors seeking advice on how to secure a ride while in San Francisco, or be well positioned to spot a driverless car on the go.
Some basics are necessary when plotting your own robotaxi ride. First, while AV companies such as Cruise and Zoox have proliferated in recent years, Waymo, which is owned by Alphabet (Google’s parent company), is currently the only company offering rides to the public in San Francisco.
Waymo also operates in the Phoenix metro area, including offering rides to and from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, and is currently slowly rolling out rides in Los Angeles and testing rides on the San Francisco Peninsula and in Austin, Texas. In Phoenix, you can hail a Waymo using the Uber app; in all other locations, downloading the Waymo app is required. (The app is very similar to other ride-hailing services; pricing is comparable, too.) And in almost all service areas, there is a waiting list to be granted access.
Anjelica Price-Rocha, a public relations manager for Waymo, was not able to provide specific estimates for waiting list times in various cities, but she did say that the wait is shorter in San Francisco than in Los Angeles. (I signed up for the app in San Francisco in late April and was off the waiting list just over a week later.)
“For anyone visiting San Francisco, I would suggest that you get on the waitlist as soon as you book your trip,” Price-Rocha said. Looking to spot a Waymo car on the go? According to Price-Rocha, popular pickup and drop-off locations include tourist attractions such as the Ferry Building, Pier 39, Coit Tower and the Japantown Peace Plaza.
A futuristic attraction
Not able to get direct access in time? Try asking friends, family or colleagues if they’ll invite you on a ride. Jason Karsh, a 38-year-old San Francisco resident who works as a tech marketing executive and consultant, regularly “hails” Waymo cars and suggests riding in them as a tourist activity.
“San Francisco has gotten a bad rep for visitors recently,” Karsh said. “This is a reminder that San Francisco also is a place that’s living a few years into the future technologically.”
Waymo vehicles are all-electric Jaguar I-PACEs outfitted with radar, lidar, sensors, and internal and external cameras. You use the app to unlock the car when it arrives and to play music during your ride. Four seats are available to passengers — you can sit up front, but you’re not allowed to sit in the driver’s seat (if you try, the car will not move). A real-life customer support team remotely monitors your ride for unsafe activity and is available should you require assistance.
Karsh described a recent ride with a group of colleagues: “They immediately got out their phones and began filming, almost like they were taping a celebrity or a concert.”
Indeed, riding in a Waymo can turn you into the main attraction. On a recent trip through San Francisco with my visiting in-laws, we not only filmed much of our ride, but spotted a group of tourists who pointed and stared at our driverless vehicle, even pulling out phones to snap footage of their own.
De Clercq, visiting from New Jersey, described his ride home from a night out in Chinatown as “very interesting and futuristic. It was extremely cautious and quite slow.”
According to safety data from the company, Waymos are significantly safer than human drivers. That hasn’t prevented public backlash over AVs — California suspended Cruise vehicles from operating on the streets of San Francisco after an incident in which a pedestrian was hit and dragged under a vehicle. There have been regular complaints of Waymo cars blocking traffic and emergency vehicles. Crashes, largely involving stationary objects, have led to a federal investigation of Waymo.
However, in Karsh’s experience, Waymo rides are sometimes less than seamless because they’re too cautious.
“If there’s a car stopped with the hood up on a two-lane street, a human driver will know to go around. A Waymo might just sit there,” he said.
From awe and delight to near normalcy
But perhaps the most noteworthy aspect of a first-time Waymo ride is how quickly it feels normal.
“For the first couple of minutes, there’s this giddiness,” Price-Rocha said. “But we see that, really quickly, people just ease into the experience.”
Karsh saw this shift happen firsthand on a recent trip to New York City, when his family opted for a ride in a yellow cab.
“My 3½-year-old son turns to me and my wife and says, ‘Look, Daddy, a driver!’ He was kind of shocked.”

A charming little town in the mountains, Tsumago lets you experience the atmosphere of ancient Japan. During the Edo period (1603-1868), Tsumago was an important post town located along the Nakasendo route between Tokyo, then Edo, and Kyoto. This once prosperous and cosmopolitan town fell into obscurity after the opening of the Chuo train line. Then in 1968 the village started a restoration program, and it's now considered the best restored postal town in the country. ![tourism of cars Moscow Kremlin](https://www.touropia.com/gfx/b/2018/12/moscow_kremlin.jpg)
This famously fortified complex is remarkably home to five palaces and four cathedrals and is the historic, political and spiritual center of the city. The Kremlin serves as the residence for the country’s president. It has been used as a fort, and this fact is made clear by its sheer size. The Kremlin’s outer walls were built in the late 1400s.
Under Ivan III, better known as Ivan the Great, the Kremlin became the center of a unified Russian state, and was extensively remodeled. Three of the Kremlin’s cathedrals date to his reign that lasted from 1462-1505. The Deposition Church and the Palace of Facets were also constructed during this time. The Ivan the Great Bell Tower was built in 1508. It is the tallest tower at the Kremlin with a height of 266 feet (81 meters).
Joseph Stalin removed many of the relics from the tsarist regimes. However, the Tsar Bell, the world’s largest bell, and the Tsar Cannon, the largest bombard by caliber in the world, are among the remaining items from that era. The Kremlin Armory is one of Moscow’s oldest museums as it was established more than 200 years ago. Its diamond collection is impressive.
The Kremlin’s gardens – Taynitsky, Grand Kremlin Public and Alexander – are beautiful. The Kremlin has also served as the religious center of the country, and there is a tremendous number of preserved churches and cathedrals here. The collections contained within the museums include more than 60,000 historical, cultural and artistic monuments. Those who enjoy the performing arts will want to consider attending a ballet or concert at the State Kremlin Palace. Completed in 1961, it is the only modern building in the Kremlin.

![tourism of cars Saint Basil's Cathedral](https://www.touropia.com/gfx/b/2018/12/saint_basils_cathedral.jpg)
Located in the impressive Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral is gorgeous; its delightful spires appear as if out of a fairytale. The most recognizable building in the country, the cathedral is very much a symbol of Russia. No visit to Moscow is complete without having taken in its unique and distinctive features.
Ivan the Terrible ordered the cathedral’s construction in the mid-16th century, and legend holds that Ivan put out the architect’s eyes so that he would be unable to build another cathedral more glorious than St. Basil’s. Designed to resemble the shape of a bonfire in full flame, the architecture is not only unique to the period in which it was built but to any subsequent period. For various reasons, both Napoleon and Stalin wanted to destroy the cathedral but fortunately did not succeed.
Known for its various colors, shapes and geometric patterns, St. Basil’s Cathedral houses nine different chapels that are all connected by a winding labyrinth of corridors and stairways. On the lower floor, St. Basil’s Chapel contains a silver casket bearing the body of St. Basil the Blessed.
Throughout the cathedral are many beautiful murals, frescoes, wooden icons and other art works and artifacts. Outside the cathedral is a lovely garden with the bronze Monument to Minin and Pozharsky, who rallied an all-volunteer Russian army against Polish invaders during a period of the late 16th century known as the Times of Troubles.

In Saskatoon, your girls’ trip happy hour gets especially joyous at Lucky Bastard Distillers . Founded by a lottery winner, Lucky Bastard Distillers brims with girl power. It boasts one of Canada’s few female distillers. And its bottle labels and cans feature pin-up girl artwork created by women. It also focuses heavily on local flavors, relying on 100 percent Saskatchewan wheat for its famous vodkas.
You and your friends can go behind the scenes of this distinctive distillery on a free public tour, which includes up to three samples. Better yet, take a cocktail class in its 1,600-square-foot event room with tufted leather couches and sparkling chandeliers for a Prohibition-era vibe. Its resident mixologists can give you hands-on lessons on how to make spirited cocktails, like the Luck of the Draw, Lucky Bastard’s take on a Singapore Sling.
Taste outdoor-aged whisky in a flower field
Black Fox Farm & Distillery
Prefer darker spirits? Head to Black Fox Farm & Distillery —one of the few farm-to-still distilleries in North America. Founded by farmers, this distillery grows 90 percent of the ingredients used in their products. What’s more, it claims to be the only distillery in the world that ages its whisky barrels outside, enhancing flavors with the constant interactions between whiskey and prairie wood in fluctuating temperatures on the prairies. Take a tour to sample the whisky straight from the barrel.
Afterward, savor a crafted cocktail and wander through their dreamy flower fields, where you can hand pick your own bouquet—an idyllic addition to your Saskatoon girls’ trip itinerary.
See where the buffalo roam
Bison at Wanuskewin Heritage Park
Home to Canada’s oldest archeological dig site, Wanuskewin Heritage Park takes travelers back more than 6,000 years to a time when the thundering hooves of bison (also known as buffalo) echoed through the prairies and nomadic Indigenous peoples roamed the Northern Plains. The bison disappeared from this land around 150 years ago, but they were reintroduced five years ago thanks to a partnership between Wanuskewin and Parks Canada. You can now see the park’s conservation bison herd roam freely in the grasslands from a viewing platform—a sight that will leave you awestruck.
After seeing the magnificent creatures, head inside to the museum to learn about the Indigenous peoples who have called this area home for thousands of years and the importance of bison to their heritage. It also features phenomenal art galleries, regular dance and music presentations, and a restaurant focused on Indigenous flavors.
Savor Saskatoon’s adventurous culinary scene
One of the most memorable things to do on a girls’ trip to Saskatoon is eat. This city is filled with a mix of quirky and delectable restaurants worth writing home about—like Baba’s Homestyle Perogies . It’s the world’s only drive-thru pierogi restaurant. Its staff makes up to 10,000 pierogies and 3,000 cabbage rolls every day. People of Ukrainian descent comprise up to 15 percent of Saskatoon’s population, so sampling these tasty dumplings is a must if you want an authentic taste of the local culture.
Farm-to-table food at Odla
For more local and regional fare, head to Odla . Located in Saskatoon’s historic Broadway neighborhood, this farm-driven restaurant exclusively serves ingredients from the region, including house-made vinegar, which substitutes for citrus. Start with the sourdough bread and honey butter before digging into mouthwatering mains, like gnocchi with pea shoot pesto and whipped feta, steak frites with bone marrow mayo, and grilled trout with kimchi rosti.
Thirteen Pies
To end your girls’ trip on a high note, head to Thirteen Pies , a horror-movie themed pizza joint with tiki-inspired cocktails. The name of each pizza nods to the world of horror cinema (like “The Pies Have Eyes,” a pepperoni, provolone, and mozzarella pie). Splurge with add-ons like the everything seasoning crust and truffle honey dipping sauce—you won't regret it.

New car inventory and prices: What shoppers need to know
The car shortage is officially over.
Supplies of new cars are at a four-year high, which is also boosting used car supply, data show. Unfortunately, that doesn’t necessarily mean lower prices, experts say.
Total new-car inventory on the Cars.com marketplace rose to 2.32 million vehicles throughout May, the highest level since December 2020, the car comparison site said. However, prices remained steady at approximately $49,000, consistent for the past eight months but down from June 2023’s high of $50,300.
Those elevated prices, coupled with high interest rates, likely means shoppers will still experience sticker shock.
“You can find the right car that you want now,” said Ivan Drury, director of insights at car platform Edmunds.com. “The problem is, are you going to find the right financing that kind of seals the deal for you?”
Lower your auto insurance costs: Find the best car insurance of 2023
Why are new car prices still so high if there’s more supply?
Cars are fancier now. All those big touch screens, mirrors and automatic features are expensive, Drury said.
“As production has come back and inventories are at a four-year high, I haven’t seen prices come down as much as I had hoped,” said Kevin Roberts, director of industry insights and analytics at car comparison site CarGurus.
Is it a bad time to buy a car?
Not necessarily. It depends on what you’re looking for, experts say.
“If you’re out in the market, you’ll see some positive changes, with more choices, dealer incentives and more leasing” opportunities, Roberts said.
What cars might be good buys?
- New, high-margin, luxury 2023 SUVs were plentiful, and you might still be able to snatch one up for a good price, Roberts said. Dealers are offering incentives to unload them since 2025 cars are coming out, he said. Some of the incentives could help counter lofty monthly payments.
- Used car inventory and prices are dropping as new car inventory rises.
“More new-car inventory means more new-car sales, which means more trade-ins, increasing used-car inventory and bringing prices down — and that’s just what we’re seeing,” said Rebecca Lindland, senior director of industry data and insights at Cars Commerce.
May used car inventory increased 4% from April, helping lower the average price by 7% to $28,861 from a year ago, she said.
- Used electric vehicles (EVs) are notably more affordable, with prices declining 19% from last year, Lindland said.
“Early adopters and enthusiasts are trading their EVs for newer models that often offer more extended range and battery life, driving up the stock in used EVs,” Lindland said. Shoppers can now find used EVs less than 3 years old with average mileage of around 37,000.
What cars are hard to find?
Lower-priced vehicles under $30,000 are still hard to get your hands on because a lot of people want one, experts say. Searches for cars under $30,000 are up 36% year over year, Roberts said.
Competition for lower-priced vehicles is stiff, but if you’re okay with something useful but maybe, not sexy or luxurious, you’ll have better luck, said Brian Moody, executive editor at vehicle marketplace Autotrader.
“Look for sedans and hatchbacks those aren't necessarily as popular as others,” he said. “Avoid the super popular thing. Don't look for luxury, and all this stuff… the Nissan Sentra? Not that sexy, but it's out there. It's a good car for about $25,000.”
Don’t forget to factor in financing
Outside of price, buyers need to consider financing costs that can make or break a deal, experts say.
“One thing people tend to overlook is the interest rate ,” Moody said.
Before shopping, know:
- Your credit score and what you qualify for. For a low annual percentage rate (APR) incentive, you must qualify with excellent credit. “Not everyone’s going to get that,” Moody said.
- Interest rates for used cars is almost double those for new cars. Shoppers “might find that the interest affecting the payment cancels each other out, and you may end up getting a new car that’s going to be about the same price in the end or the same monthly payment as a used car,” Moody said.
New used to be hot: Car prices are cooling, but should you buy new or used? Here are pros and cons.
Remember this hidden cost that’s skyrocketing
Don’t forget to consider the price of auto insurance , which has outpaced the already elevated rate of inflation and adds to the monthly cost of owning a car. Annual vehicle insurance costs rose 20.3% in May, government data showed.
“This will become more of talking point in coming months,” Roberts said. “People may want to get a more cost-effective vehicle, look at lightly used. maybe.” Used cars generally cost less to insure.

A Tourist From New Mexico Is Killed by an Elephant in Zambia
The incident came months after another tourist was killed in Zambia when an elephant charged her group. One wildlife expert said the attacks were most likely “freak accidents.”
![tourism of cars Two elephants walk across a two-lane road flanked by semitrailers.](https://static01.nyt.com/images/2024/06/21/multimedia/21xp-elephant-hjvt/21xp-elephant-hjvt-articleLarge.jpg?quality=75&auto=webp&disable=upscale)

A tourist from New Mexico was killed in Zambia when an elephant charged her, according to the police commissioner who investigated the incident. She is the second tourist to be fatally attacked by an elephant in the southern African country this year.
The woman who was killed, Juliana G. Letourneau, 64, of Albuquerque, had just visited Victoria Falls, a 350-foot waterfall that straddles the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, and was heading back to her hotel on Wednesday when the group that she was traveling with encountered a herd of elephants on the road.
She and others stepped out of their vehicle to observe the animals, said Auxensio Daka, the police commissioner for the southern province of Zambia, in a telephone interview on Saturday.
“They stopped to watch the elephants, and unfortunately one of them charged towards them as they were standing there watching,” Mr. Daka said.
Mr. Daka said that Ms. Letourneau was taken to a clinic in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park near Livingstone, Zambia, where she was declared dead on arrival. Her injuries included deep wounds on the right shoulder blade and forehead, a fractured left ankle and a slightly depressed chest, according to a police statement.
No other injuries were reported from the encounter with the elephant.
Ms. Letourneau’s brother said on Saturday that he had no details about the incident, and declined to be interviewed. Other relatives could not be reached.
This past March, a 79-year-old American woman was on safari at Kafue National Park, in a central region of western Zambia, when an elephant charged the tour group’s vehicle, according to media reports .
However, human deaths are rare in encounters with elephants, according to experts.
“This is really a freak accident,” Nikhil Advani, a senior director at the World Wildlife Fund, a nonprofit that works on environmental protection and conservation efforts, said of the two incidents happening so close together. “It’s probably just some sort of coming together of unfortunate circumstances that led to this.”
The U.S. State Department said in a statement on Friday that millions of Americans travel to areas where there is wildlife every year, and that it is uncommon for elephants and other wild animals to attack visitors in Zambia.
Ms. Letourneau’s death was first reported by the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation, a government-controlled news outlet, which said that human and wildlife encounters in Livingstone, the city where the incident occurred, were rising amid the country’s worst drought in four decades .
The climate conditions are worsening food insecurity in Zambia, which has one of the highest rates of malnutrition in sub-Saharan Africa, and pushing wildlife into human habitats in search of food and water, according to the report.
Tourism to wildlife protected areas, which cover about a third of Zambia, and to the numerous lakes and rivers and lush valleys contributes an important share of the national economy.
Joyce Poole, a co-founder and co-director of ElephantVoices, a nonprofit that researches elephant behavior, said that keeping distance from elephants is the best way for tourists to stay safe. She added that there can sometimes be a “culture of aggression” stemming from a region’s history with elephants, as in Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique, which experienced decades of war and poaching in the 20th century.
“Elephants responded in a certain way toward vehicles,” Dr. Poole said of her research findings from Gorongosa. “This behavior was then observed by younger elephants, imitated by younger elephants and sort of passed down through families.” There have been multiple poaching crises in Zambia, she noted.
Dr. Poole said that finding “a reputable company and drivers who are not just racing around to get the best shot” would be a good way for visitors to ensure safety.
Visitors to wilderness areas should also be wary and admire the animals from afar, experts say.
“As with all wildlife, like if you keep safe distance from them, they are not looking to disturb you or interact with you,” Dr. Advani said.
