The thriller series The Tourist successfully jumped from Max to Netflix for its second season, but will the Jamie Dornan-led show return for season 3? Debuting in 2022, The Tourist follows an Irishman visiting Australia who wakes up from a coma and finds he can't remember his past. With the help of a local, the man begins to recover his memory and soon finds that he was involved in shady dealings that are quickly coming back to haunt him. Originally devised as a limited series, The Tourist blossomed into an ongoing show with its renewal later in 2022.

Though the series is popular in the US and streams on US-based platforms, The Tourist is a BBC production produced in the UK. While its lifespan on British TV has been much more stable, the series has seen some turbulence in the US despite only being two seasons deep. HBO's streaming service Max dumped the show after season 1, and Netflix quickly scooped The Tourist up for both its premiere season and its sophomore outing. Despite its continued success, the future of The Tourist is uncertain, and season 3 is far from a foregone conclusion.

Jamie Dornan Is Unsure About The Show's Future

Though season 2 only recently debuted in the US, the latest news sees Jamie Dornan address The Tourist season 3 cautiously. The celebrated actor expressed his doubts about a third outing , saying " I don’t know if there’s been conversations had about that...I don’t think it’ll happen. " Dornan followed that up by saying his busy schedule means The Tourist season 3 wouldn't happen quickly, Dornan mentioned " I know I’m pretty busy now until the end of 2025, so it’ll be a while. "

The Third Season Has Not Been Green-Lit Yet

Since the second season only debuted in the US on February 29, 2024, it isn't all that surprising that the fate of The Tourist season 3 has not been announced yet. BBC will likely wait until the full scope of the audience reaction has been gathered before making a decision , especially since US and other foreign viewers have helped drive the show's success. Jamie Dornan's busy schedule might hinder the process, but the show could nevertheless be green-lit for production much further into the future.

Jamie Dornan fans are desperate for The Tourist season 3 after the cliffhanger ending to series two

We're all hoping to see Jamie Dornan return as Eugene Cassidy in The Tourist season 3 after the second instalment of the BBC One drama ended on an explosive cliffhanger (spoilers ahead if you've not seen it yet)!

Written by Jack and Harry Williams, the hit show has been a big success on the BBC iPlayer since in debuted on New Year's Day 2024, with millions of viewers bingeing the entire series in just a few days. 

Audiences were on the edge of their sofas as "Elliot Stanley" returned home in The Tourist season 2 to Ireland to discover his roots, after his memory was wiped in an accident in Australia at the start of season one. 

He subsequently learned his real name was Eugene Cassidy and was part of a crime family who'd been at war with bitter rivals, the McDonnells, for decades. Yet the real bombshell came at the end of the sixth episode, when viewers learned he was also a Special Agent, deployed in deep cover! 

But will Eugene's story continue in a third series of The Tourist ? We take a closer look... 

The Tourist season 3 release date

The BBC have not yet confirmed if the show will return for a third season, yet the bombshell ending to the second series suggests the show's creators, Jack and Harry Williams, have plenty of ideas for a potential return. 

There was a two year gap between the first and second season, which means a third season could potentially be on our screens in January 2026 — if it was given the go-ahead. As soon as there's any news on that front, we'll be sure to let you know. 

The Tourist season 3 plot

The final scene of The Tourist season 2 gave the show's writers, Jack and Harry Williams, plenty of scope to bring the drama back.

We saw Eugene Cassidy (Jamie Dornan) and Helen Chambers (Danielle Macdonald) shacked up in the Netherlands, which is unsurprising, given what they were up to in the first scene of season 2. It's six months after the showdown at the Cassidy's pub and the couple receive a file on Eugene, sent by a mysterious person who read about his case in the paper.

Helen says she doesn’t need a file to know who her boyfriend is and so Eugene burns it, yet we can't help but notice the subtle pang of regret on Helen's face. We sense the ex-cop in her still has questions she'd like answered! 

Before the crucial documents are destroyed, the audience — but not Eugene or Helen _ see that Eugene was actually a Special Agent, deployed on a deep cover assignment in July 2005. Was he part of a Garda operation to infiltrate the Cassidy clan? Was he a special agent when he departed Ireland for Australia? Does this mean Helen was right all along and Eugene wasn't an evil drug dealer, but a Special Agent trying to infiltrate a drug cartel? We need answers. 

Yet that wasn't the only loose end left dangling at the end of the second season... 

When Helen, Ruari and Ethan visited Deirdre Stanley, in the hope of finding out more about her late husband, Elliot Stanley, they also asked about Eugene Cassidy. “He put it about a bit my Elliot,” Deirdre replied. So was Elliot, Eugene’s dad? Did Niamh Cassidy kill Eugene's father? 

The death of Eugene's brother was also a running theme throughout the series, with Donal McDonnell confessing to killing him in the fifth episode, explaining that he thought he was Eugene. Eugene wonders if he left Ireland due to the guilt of inadvertently causing his sibling's death, but is there more to the story?

Where could the Tourist season 3 be set? 

The show's writers, Jack and Harry Williams, had originally planned for the second series to be set in Canada. 

"We didn’t go to Ireland straight away," explained Jack at a press event in late 2023. "We wrote a whole draft set in Canada, similar elements. It was very similar. Detective Ruairi Slater would have still been in it as a Mountie, which would have been great. The same story, but with a Mountie." 

When the show's leading man, Jamie Dornan, was asked about the potential for a third season at the same event, he joked: "It will be set in Canada, the scripts are already written." 

However Dornan also explained that uprooting his family to shoot the first season in Australia was quite an ordeal and filming in Ireland was a big reason for saying yes to the sequel. As such, it seems unlikely that any potential third season would be filmed so far from the British Isles, making a return to Ireland the most likely scenario. 

However another possibility could be the Netherlands, which is where we left Eugene and Helen at the end of The Tourist season 2. The European country is a very short flight from the British Isles, meaning Dornan probably wouldn't need to uproot his family and could return home from set very easily. 

The Tourist season 3 cast

There's no way the show would return without Jamie Dornan and the Northern Irish star's involvement as Eugene Cassidy would be crucial if the show was to return. We'd also expect Danielle Macdonald, who plays Eugene's girlfriend Helen Chambers, to come back if there was a third season. 

The second season featured a host of new characters who could also reprise their roles, such as Olwen Fouéré who played Eugene's mother Niamh Cassidy, and Mark McKenna as his son Fergel. 

One man we'd definitely like to see more of is Greg Larsen, who plays Helen's ex-boyfriend, Ethan Krum. He might not have been our favourite character in the first season, but he was great fun in the second!

The Tourist’s Jamie Dornan gives promising update on season 3

"There's probably a world where it happens in Holland."

The Tourist star Jamie Dornan has given a promising update on a possible third season.

The show's second season finds protagonist Elliot Stanley (Dornan) and PC Helen Chambers (Danielle Macdonald) in rugged Irish terrain, as they attempt to uncover the secrets of Elliot's past.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly , Dornan explained that he doesn't know if another season is on the cards, but admits there have been "conversations" about another chapter in Elliot's story.

The actor also teased that any third season would likely be set in Amsterdam, after his character notably swapped the Irish countryside for a new life in the Dutch capital at the end of season two .

"There's probably a world where it happens in Holland in some capacity, if they were to do more, which wouldn't be a bad thing," he said. "I like the Dutch, they're an interesting bunch, and always really fun, and it's a beautiful place. But who knows!"

Dornan went on to reveal that The Tourist was originally supposed to end after its debut season , which was set in the Australian outback.

"The idea was always just to do one series. It was pitched as a limited series of six episodes and I was very on board with that," he explained.

"That felt like the right thing in that mad peak COVID time of it all, to go and do this clean, cool, punchy, odd drama that will live by itself."

He continued: "And then, ah Jesus, a lot of people watched it in the UK and Ireland and it got a lot of love, there was a lot of good energy around it."

Despite its success, Dornan previously told Digital Spy that he thinks The Tourist shouldn't go on for too long.

"If we're sitting here in 10 years and we're talking about season eight, then just kill me. But I don't think we will be," he joked.

The Tourist   has been taking Netflix  by storm! The hit BBC show starring Jamie Dornan found a new home on the streaming giant after being removed from Max during production for the second season. Now, Season 2 has been released in the United States, nearly two months since it premiered in the United Kingdom.

Created by  Fleabag  producers Harry and Jack Williams, the show follows a car crash victim (Dornan) who wakes up in a hospital with amnesia and goes on a journey to figure out his past after suspecting that dangerous people are trying to kill him.

At the end of the first season, the man discovers that his name is Elliot and he has connections to a drug trafficking ring.

The series also stars Danielle Macdonald as Helen, a police officer who greets Elliot in the hospital and later becomes embroiled in his twisted journey. The two develop a close friendship that takes a romantic turn.

The Tourist premiered Jan. 1, 2022 on BBC in the UK and aired months later on Max in the United States. In December 2023, Deadline  reported that Max removed the show from the platform and Netflix was picking it up. Netflix re-released Season 1 in the U.S. on Feb. 1, 2024 and Season 2 on Feb. 29, 2024. The show has become a major hit for the platform. As of now, Season 1 has spent four weeks on the streamer’s Global Top 10 TV chart.

Jamie Dornan on ‘The Tourist’ Season 3

Decider sat down to chat with Dornan in the New York City Netflix office ahead of the US release of The Tourist Season 2. During our conversation, Dornan shared that the show was originally only meant to be one season, however, the Williams brothers slipped him a script for the first episode of Season 2 while they were meeting for a meal, and he loved it.

“I read the first script and I was like, ‘Oh, right. I’m on board.’ I said ‘yes’ after reading that script,” Dornan told Decider.

But, what’s the likelihood of that happening again for a third season?

“I don’t know if there’s been conversations had about that,” Dornan said. “We’re staying out of all that and seeing if it happens. I don’t think it’ll happen. I think I know I’m pretty busy now until the end of 2025, so it’ll be a while.”

Given that the spirits are high between Dornan, the writers, and Netflix, never say never. But for now, it seems that those involved with the show are satisfied with the two seasons.

Jamie Dornan on Future Projects

Speaking of Dornan’s busy schedule, the Irish actor gave Decider insight on the projects he has in the works. He newly joined The Tourist as an executive producer for Season 2, and teases that he has committed himself to additional producing projects. “If you’re the lead in something and you’ve got a certain standing in the industry, you end up being an executive producer. Some are more active than others in terms of what they actually contribute, I probably fell somewhere in the middle,” Dornan said about his experience being a producer for Season 2. “For the next couple of things I’m doing, I’m in that role again. I’m not allowed to talk about it, but I start filming really soon and I’m definitely more active than I was in the second season of  The Tourist .”

Dornan also teased the continuation of his relationship with Netflix, saying, “There’s a couple of things that are maybe in my future that are Netflixy.”

Will There Be A The Tourist Season 3?

With all the information we shared above, we’re confident in saying that the people involved with creating The Tourist are letting the show evolve naturally, and thus far, there have been no extensive conversations about returning for a third season.

Though, as Dornan shared on The Graham Norton Show in January 2023, with as much fan interest as the show has been generating, the possibilities are endless. “There wasn’t meant to be [a Season 2], but then that many people watch something and you know how the world works,” the actor said at the time. “If there’s an appetite for it, and Jack and Harry Williams, who created the show, are very smart fellas, and they’ve worked out a way of continuing the story.”

What Happened in the Final Minutes of ‘The Tourist’ Season 2?

As the finale rolls to the end and wraps up some of the bigger questions, like who Eugene Cassidy (Jamie Dornan) was and what was in the suitcase that his mother Niamh Cassidy ( Olwen Fouéré ) buried decades ago, the cliffhanger in the show’s final five moments is the real shock and awe. Across the season’s six episodes, Helen (Danielle Macdonald) has been trying her hardest to help her boyfriend Elliot rediscover who he is after being struck with amnesia in Season 1 . After getting into some dire situations that turned Elliot’s hopeful “Eat, Pray, Love” journey into a trip from hell, the couple wants nothing more from the Emerald Isle and has put his shady past behind them. That is until six months later, when the two are confronted in their comfortable Amsterdam apartment with a manila envelope, detailing “The Life and Times of Eugene Cassidy.”

After Eugene was arrested for the murder of Donal McDonnell ( Diarmaid Murtagh ) in the Season 2 finale but seemingly got off because his mother Niamh had confessed to it, an article was published in the local Irish newspaper. With the sender tracking him down and mailing him information about his past, Eugene admits to Helen he didn’t bother reading anything because he doesn’t care for who he was anymore . Helen reassures him, sharing how she knows who he is and no file will compromise her belief in his character. Promptly confirming her response, Eugene proceeds to toss the file into the Dutch oven despite a quick look of regret from Helen.

What That “General Assignment” File Means for ‘The Tourist’

In the closing scenes, reminiscent of a previous story where Niamh revealed to Helen that Eugene used to be quite the dancer before his memory loss , Helen orchestrates a private moment in a concert hall, bringing Eugene's long-forgotten skills into the spotlight. Firing up “Swan Lake” much to his chagrin, Eugene starts to dance beautifully and proves he is light on his feet — a talent he didn’t realize he had in him. While Dornan gives us strong Edgar Paget vibes while floating to Tchaikovsky, the scenes cut back to the Dutch oven as we see the file burn down with papers curling into view amid the flames. Is ‘The Tourist’ Renewed for Season 3?

Not yet. But in all fairness, The Tourist was meant to be a limited series without a continuation . Following an astonishing, intriguing, and mysterious cliffhanger, there is so much more to delve into. Considering how Netflix is also the official and exclusive U.S. home of the Harry and Jack Williams show, there’s no telling how far it can go. While the showrunners were talking to Radio Times , they hinted that there could be something more around the corner, but that ambiguous finale could also “exist as a thing that ends [there] and we never see again,” but they would also “never say never.”

“There is a little nod at the very end of this season that does suggest some interesting avenues for exploration, I would say,” Jack Williams told Radio Times . “It depends on us finding the right thing, but we love the world, and we love the characters, and we love working with Jamie [Dornan] and Danielle [Macdonald], so that’s always going to be interesting to us.”

When the producing pair behind Two Brothers Pictures wrote the first season, they admitted how they wanted to tell one story that had an ending and was complete without holding anything back. However, in writing someone like Elliot/Eugene/The Man, there’s only a certain amount that gets revealed when this character is a very layered person with a backstory that could potentially open up some incredibly bonkers nuances . “So, in the back of our minds, we did wonder if there was going to be more to tell because Season 1 didn’t reveal everything about him,” Jack Williams said. “It didn’t reveal why he made the choices he made [...] but we didn’t want to come back unless we had a really good reason to do so and a story to tell that wasn’t going to undo everything we’d done in Season 1.”
