Generally, if you want to visit ( and not live in ) the United States you must first obtain a visitor visa . Travelers from certain countries may be exempt from this requirement. For more information, please see the U.S. Department of State website .

Extending Your Visit

If Customs and Border Protection (CBP)  authorizes your admission to the United States at the designated port of entry, you will receive a stamped Form I-94, Record of Arrival-Departure . If you wish to stay beyond the time indicated on the Form I-94, you may apply for an extension by filing Form I-539, Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status , with USCIS.

US tourist visa requirements are clear and detailed. US visa application is a multi-step process. The first step of the application process is to fill DS-160 form online. The second step is to schedule the visa interview appointment. This step involves paying the visa fee and picking the location and date of your visa interview.

Validity of US tourist visa

The validity of US visas depends on the country of passport. US tourist visas are usually issued for 1 year, 5 years or 10 years.

Example: The B1/B2 or B2 visas for Afghanistan passport holders are valid for 1 year only. Whereas, for Bangladesh passport holders, the B1/B2 visas are valid for 5 years. For Indian passport holders, B1/B2 visas are valid for 10 years.

When to apply for US tourist visa

You can apply for US tourist visa as early as you can. Unlike, other country visas, US visa can be applied as early as you. I have seen some readers apply as much as 1 year in advance.

How long can your stay in the US

The US tourist visa allows you to stay up to 180 days in the US. But if you stay that long continuously in the US on a tourist visa, you will have trouble entering the US again. You may be questioned on your purpose of visit.

Unlike other country visas, US visa has no processing time. Meaning, the visa officer will tell your visa result at the end of your interview. You will be able to pick up or receive your passport within 3-10 business days from your interview day.

1. Fill DS-160 form online

The first step in the US visa application process is to fill DS-160 form online . It is a lengthy form, so it can take a few days to complete. You would need to gather and compile a lot of information for the form.

I recommend starting your application process as early as possible.

2. Schedule US visa appointment

The second step in the visa application process is to schedule US visa appointment . This involves paying the visa fee, and selecting the location and date of your interview.

Depending on the country where you would like to attend your visa interview, you would need to schedule one or two appointments. Some countries require an additional appointment for fingerprints and photos.

The website and the procedure to schedule US visa appointment is different in different countries.

If you are attending your US visa interview in Asia, Central America, parts of Europe, Africa and the Middle East, you must schedule your appointment on the US Travel Docs website.

If you plan to attend your US visa interview in North and South America, parts of Europe, Africa and the Middle East, you must schedule your appointment on the US Visa Information and Appointment System .

2.1. Pay US tourist visa fee

The US visa application fee is $160 payable in US dollars or local currency (in Asia only). You can pay your visa fee in various ways, such as cash at a local bank, electronic fund transfer or using a credit card.

2.2. Schedule fingerprints and photo appointment

Certain countries such as Mexico requires an additional appointment for fingerprints and photo. You will be prompted to make this additional appointment as part of your visa interview appointment.

2.3. Schedule visa interview appointment

Available dates and times for your visa type are displayed on the screen. Pick the date and time that works best for you.

3. Attend US visa interview

Attending US visa interview is a feat in itself. The high-security US embassy and the intimidating visa officers can make the entire process daunting and overwhelming.

But if you break the interview process into smaller steps and tackle them individually, it can be less stressful. Let’s look at these steps individually in detail.

3.1. Preparation

• Go over your DS-160 to familiarize yourself with the information you have entered. You may be asked the same questions in the interview. You must not contradict your own answers.
• Go over the top 5 US interview questions and answers. Sit and answer all of those questions. Make a note of them if you have to.
• Write down any other questions on your purpose, industry, etc and prepare them as well.

3.2. Planning

• Gather the documentation that you would need to carry
• Print any documentation that needs to be printed
• Organize your documentation in an easily retrievable format
• Familiarize yourself with directions and transportation options to the embassy
• Wash, iron and have your interview clothes ready

PRO TIP Use a compartment folder to sort and organize your documentation. Label the compartments if you have to it.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE I was not asked to show any documentation at all during my US B1/B2 visa interview. I did take my bank statements, my payment receipts for the conference I was attending, and my business cards as a blogger and travel writer.

The interview procedure varies slightly from location to location. This 10-step procedure gives you an overall idea of what to expect.

3.5. Dos and Don’ts of the Appointment

• Arrive on Time: The time of your appointment is the time to arrive at the gate of the embassy. It is NOT the time of your actual interview. You must arrive not more than 15 min before your appointment time. Otherwise, you will be sent back and asked to arrive at your appointment time.
• No Electronics: Only a cell phone and keyfob are allowed into the embassy. Any other electronics such as tablets, laptops, etc. are not allowed into the embassy and you will be sent back.
• No Bags: Backpacks and luggage are not allowed into the embassy. The embassy will not store any bags and you will be sent back.
• No Non-permitted Items: Non-permitted items such as cigarettes, lighter, sharp objects, food items, etc are not allowed. You will have to discard them or you will be sent back.
• Carry Documents: You can only carry documents in a see-through folder or plastic bag.

3.6. Dos and Don’ts of the Interview

• Be honest: Visa officers are very well-trained and have years of experience. They see thousands of applicants in their careers. They can easily spot lies and manipulative answers. Be honest in your answers.
• Be confident: Stand straight. Be loud and clear. Ask the visa officer to repeat the question if you did not understand. Don’t change your answers if you are asked to repeat them.
• Don’t show desperation: Don’t show any signs of desperation. Visa officers are very well-trained and have years of experience. They can easily spot desperation.
• Say only what’s needed: Answer only with the information needed. Say what is needed, nothing else. Any extra information can lead to unnecessary questions that you may not have answers for.
• Be fluent in your English: This is a tricky one. Visa officers will not have much time and they can be impatient at times. If your answers are not clear and difficult to understand, it can impact your visa result. Improve your English speaking skills. Get rid of any accent if you have.
• Carry all relevant documentation: Make sure you have all the documentation with you. There should not be a situation where you don’t have a document that you are asked to present.
• Organize your documentation: Organize your documents in a smart way, so you can retrieve them right away when asked. Shuffling through the documents, taking too long to retrieve a document, and mishandling documents can affect your visa result.
• Dress appropriately: Dressing appropriately makes you presentable. It boosts your confidence as well.
• Choose your visa officer: Last but not least. If you have the opportunity to choose your visa officer, go to a visa officer who looks friendly and close to the same age as yours.

3.7. US tourist visa interview questions

During the US B1/B2 visa interview, you will be asked a few questions. These questions can be the same as what you already have in your DS-160 or completely different.

• Have you been to the US before?
• Have you been to other countries?
• What do you do for a living?

Each above question can lead to many other questions depending on your answers. For example, “What do you do for a living” can lead to questions such as how long you have been working, how much money you make, etc.

3.8. Visa Result

You will be told the result of the visa at the end of the interview. Therefore, at the end of the interview, you will know whether your visa is approved or denied or needs additional information.

If approved, you will be told that your visa is approved. You will be given a sheet of paper with instructions on how to pick up your passport or when to expect the delivery.

If denied, you will be told that your visa is denied. Your passport and documentation will be returned back to you. You will also be given a sheet of paper marking the section under which your visa application was denied.

If the visa officer needs additional information, you will be given a sheet of paper with details and the steps to continue from there.

4. Pick up Passport

If your visa is approved, your passport will be ready for pick up within 3-10 working days. You will be notified via email or SMS that your passport is ready for pickup.

If you have requested for your passport to be delivered, you will be notified via email or SMS when the passport is dispatched. You should receive it in 3-10 working days.

After you pick up or receive your passport, verify your visa for any discrepancies. If you see any discrepancy, contact the consulate/embassy immediately.

What’s next?

Get ready for your US trip. US tourist visas are usually valid for 10 years and multiple entries. You can travel to the US anytime within the validity of your US visa. You can also enter as many times as you want.

Healthcare in the US is quite expensive. Most travel insurance does not cover travel in the US. So make sure to purchase insurance that is specifically meant for US travel.

ENTERING AND LEAVING THE US

Entering the us by air.

Port of entry in US airports usually has two lines for arriving passengers. One for citizens and permanent residents and the other for visitors. You will go and stand in the visitor’s line. When your turn comes, you will be sent to either an automated kiosk or to an immigration officer.

If you are sent to an automated kiosk, just follow the instructions on the screen. You will scan your visa page and your details will appear on the screen. Review the details. Go through the steps and print your receipt.

Once you print your receipt, proceed toward an immigration officer. Present your passport and receipt.

You may be asked a few questions. Your passport will then be stamped with the appropriate visa type and the date until which you can remain in the US. Your passport and receipt will be returned back to you.

If you are sent to an immigration officer instead of an automated kiosk, just present your passport, boarding pass and completed customs form.

Verify the stamp, visa type and date immediately for any discrepancy.

After you finish your immigration procedure, walk to your baggage claim carousel. Pick up your bags and head to the exit.

Before the exit, you will go through the customs screening. You will have to present the customs form or receipt that you received at the immigration. The customs officer will then indicate whether you can just walk out or scan your baggage.

If you are asked to scan your baggage, continue to the baggage scanning area and put all your baggage on the scanner conveyer belt. Pick up your bags after the scan and walk towards the exit.

Leaving the US by air

Unlike many other countries, the US does not have exit passport control. There will not be any immigration checks while exiting the US.

Apply for an ESTA visa waiver through US Customs and Border Protection. You can also apply using the ESTA Mobile app on android or on iOS .

You cannot apply for an ESTA visa waiver if you have:

• been arrested (even if the arrest did not result in a criminal conviction)
• a criminal record
• been refused admission into, or have been deported from the US
• previously overstayed under an ESTA visa waiver

You cannot normally apply for an ESTA visa waiver if you were in the following countries on or after March 2011: 

• North Korea

You cannot apply for an ESTA visa waiver if you travelled to or were in Cuba on or after 12 January 2021. 

If you are not eligible for an ESTA , you must instead apply for a US visa.

US visa appointments

Visa appointments at the US Embassy in London are limited. Plan your application as far ahead as possible before travel. If you need to travel urgently, you can request an expedited interview through the US Embassy’s appointment service provider.

Children and young people

Anyone aged 17 and under must:

• have a valid visa or ESTA visa waiver on arrival
• be able to provide evidence about the purpose, location and length of their visit if asked by immigration officials
• have written consent from one or both parents if travelling alone, with only one parent, or with someone who is not a parent or legal guardian

The US authorities can stop you entering the country if they have safeguarding concerns about a child. If this happens, the US authorities will take the child into their care, and their return from the US could take months. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office ( FCDO ) cannot speed up the return of British nationals aged 17 and under from the US.

The US Customs and Border Protection programme Global Entry allows pre-approved travellers through border control faster at some US airports. If you’re a British citizen, you can  register to get a UK background check . If you pass the background checks, you’ll be invited to apply for Global Entry.

US TOURIST VISA REQUIREMENTS (B1/B2)

Please note that as of June 2022 the CDC no longer requires travelers to present a negative COVID-19 test or documentation of recovery from COVID pre arrival to the US.

We are improving our B1/B2 application process to make sure it is up to date with the current US tourist visa requirements. We will make this product available again soon. In the mean time, below you will find useful information to keep in mind for your US visa application.

Planning a trip to the US most likely entails that you must get a visa. The type of visa you need depends on the purpose of your visa. However, the US visitor visa (B1/B2) covers tourism and business purposes. Keep in mind that if you are from a country that is on the list of Visa Waiver countries , you only need an ESTA if you travel by air.

The United States B1/B2 Visa is an authorized document that offers you entry to the United States. It is electronically linked to your passport.

How do I know if I am eligible for a United States B1/B2 Visa?

You can verify your eligibility using the iVisa's Visa Checker . Just pick your country of origin and the United States as the destination country. The information will appear in seconds.

What are the tourist Visa USA Requirements??

The US tourist visa requirements are nothing out of the ordinary. After all, we are talking about a non-immigrant visa, and as you can expect, the requirements for a US tourist visa are somewhat mild as opposed to other types of visas for foreign citizens, such as those applicants who need them issued for employment, residency, and other purposes.

The first requirement you need to meet is eligibility. As part of the USA visitor visa requirements, you must provide proof that you apply for a US tourist visa for the purpose it was intended. Basically, you need to prove the following:

A valid passport –Your passport needs to be valid for at least six months, beginning with your period of stay in the United States.

Digital photograph – you can take it yourself following the requirements .

Travel itinerary – if you have already made travel arrangements.

Dates of your last five visits or trips to the United States – if you have previously traveled there. You may also be asked for your international travel history for the past five years.

A declaration to demonstrate if your purpose for visiting is business, tourism, or medical treatment .

You have to prove if you can provide for yourself while in the US.

If you can cross all of the above off the list, you can apply for your US Tourist visa .

What are the processing times and prices?

The total price will vary according to the processing time and the nationality. You have three options with iVisa. The three options are:

Rush processing – you will get your visa within , and the total price is (service fees included).

Super rush processing – this is the fastest alternative you have at hand. You will get your US B1/B2 Visa in only , and you will be charged (service fees included).

How can I apply?

You need to go through multiple steps to complete this process and meet the US visit visa requirements:

• Step one: fill in the online form

It is not possible to get a US Tourist visa online , but it is possible to fill in the application online. iVisa will soon be able to help you with that. The form is called a DS-160, and the fact that you can fill one online makes things easier. Once you submit it, you receive an application form confirmation page, and you need to print it out. Why? You will need it when you go for your interview.

Step two: pay the application fee

The application fee is $160 . Depending on your personal case, you must pay it during the application or before your interview. You need the receipt when you go for your interview in the embassy or consulate. It is one of the required documents. Keep in mind that some nationalities must also pay an issuance fee when they receive their visa.

Step three: schedule your interview

When you have your confirmation page , you are free to schedule an interview with a consular officer. It is preferable to do so at the US embassy in your country of origin. It is possible to have your interview at the US embassy in another state, but that complicates things a bit. When a date is set, make sure that you prepare.

Step four: go to your interview

At the date and hour of your interview, make sure to arrive with your required documents. You must bring the following:

The paper that confirms your meeting

A letter in which you describe the purpose of your trip to the US

Proof of sustenance once in the US

Evidence that you have strong ties in your country of origin (family, job, etc.)

An invitation letter from a friend in the US (optional but helpful)

Criminal record

Additional documents may be necessary to meet requirements:

Documents relevant to your previous visit in the US if that is the case

Diploma or transcript if you are a student

A letter from your employer and the payslips for the last three months if you have a job

A letter from a company in the US that states the purpose of your visit if you travel for business

Documents belonging to your family or friends if you plan on visiting them

Letter from your doctor about your illness and treatment if you travel for medical purposes

Once you are at your interview, the consular officer will ask you a series of questions to which you need to give an honest answer. When the interview is over, the consular officer will take his or her notes, and your visa will be granted or denied in a few weeks, depending on the season and how busy the embassy office is at the time.

As you can see, the US tourist visa requirements (B1/B2) are nothing out of the ordinary. However, you should still study them carefully to understand the legal nuances of entering the country as a tourist. The lists may be longer than for other visas, but you have to admit that there is nothing on that list that is challenging to obtain compared to visas foreign citizens must apply for in other countries.

All documents must be original – no photocopies. Your name must match across documents. What if I had a name change?

• Royal Caribbean strongly recommends that all guests travel with a valid passport. Learn why a passport is best.
• Passports must be valid at least 6 months after your cruise ends

• U.S. Birth Certificate AND Valid Government Issued ID (State ID Card, Driver’s License OR Military ID)
• U.S. Birth Certificates must be the original or an official document issued by the government.

• Guests age 15 and under are NOT required to have a photo ID, just the birth certificate.
• Permanent Resident Card (Alien Resident Card "ARC" OR Green Card) AND Valid Passport from Country of Citizenship
• Guests must bring their physical Permanent Resident Card and it must be original – no photocopies.
• Passports must be valid at least 6 months after your cruise ends.
• Guests age 16 and older whose ARC has no photo must present a valid government issued photo ID
• Barbados & Martinique require ARC guests to provide a valid passport.
• Any additional requirements are the responsibility of the guest.
• U.S. Naturalization Certificate AND Valid Government Issued ID (State ID Card, Driver’s License OR Military ID)
• Original U.S. Naturalization Certificate or a certified copy.
• Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL) that is not expired
• Enhanced Driver's Licenses are only available from the following states: Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont and Washington State.
• An Enhanced Driver’s License is different from a REAL ID compliant id. An EDL will have a flag on the front.

Europe & US Travelers: Inside the EU’s 2025 Visa Requirements

There’s good news and there’s bad news for Americans heading to Europe next year.

The bad news : the European Union changed its laws to require Americans to obtain visas or visa waivers to enter the EU.

The good news : the updates have been delayed until 2025 .

So, what does this mean for Americans heading to Europe? Most travelers are hung up on complex Schengen laws and political boundaries. But, starting in 2025, we’ll also be required to pay for a visa before arriving or show proof of a visa waiver. (Most will be doing the latter.)

Now that things are slated for change, it’s the perfect time to review the differences between Europe the continent, the European Union, and the Schengen Zone. Then we’ll dive into the nitty-gritty of what the new visa requirements entail.

Differentiating the EU from Schengen

Let’s simplify all of this. Europe is a continent. (Yes, Turkey is counted as part of Europe.) The European Union, on the other hand, is a political union between certain European countries.

There are 27 countries in the European Union , including Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

Some notable exemptions from the EU are Norway, Iceland, and Switzerland . But let’s be clear: the EU does not correlate directly to Schengen . The Schengen Zone is a group of countries that have abolished their borders, meaning you can cross them freely.

However, Ireland and Cyprus are not part of Schengen. That won’t change much on your trip – but you’ll need to go through customs when you travel to and from other EU countries . Similarly, the non-EU members of Norway, Iceland, and Switzerland are part of Schengen. The UK is not part of either the EU or Schengen. (More on this below.)

2025 visa requirements

The European Union recently created a visa program aimed at Americans. Starting in 2025, we will be legally required to apply for and receive a visa or an exemption from one before traveling to the EU.

Visa applications will be managed by the European Travel Information and Authorization System —which will have a handy online form for you to fill out. This form isn’t actually a visa, but an exemption from one. It proves that you meet the requirements to not need a visa.

The form will take only a few minutes to complete and will incur a small fee of $7.50. You must present this form when entering all EU countries, plus the Schengen members of Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland.

In summary: the EU is updating its entry requirements. Starting in 2025, Americans must present a visa or the ETIAS visa waiver upon entry. This shouldn’t be a problem for the vast majority of tourists, as they won’t be staying more than 90 days.

How does Brexit fit into this?

In case you didn’t hear, the UK voted to leave the European Union in 2016. This change went into effect in 2020, ushering in the official era of Brexit. That means that UK citizens are no longer part of the European Union or the Schengen Zone.

For American travelers, this change hasn’t affected much; you don’t need a visa to travel to the UK for a short period of time. But there’s one place where you’ll notice this change: customs lines.

Now that UK citizens aren’t part of the EU, they must also wait customs lines to enter the EU. If you’re an American heading to Europe by way of a London stopover, don’t forget to factor this into any connecting flights you may have.

In general, European airports have two lines: one for EU members and one for non-EU members. UK travelers make up a massive bulk of EU tourists, which means you can expect longer lines in larger international airports. Always account for this when booking connecting flights.

The Secretary of State, following consultations with the Department of Homeland Security, has determined that the following categories of interview waivers are in the national interest.  Changes based on that determination are implemented by consular officers, who now have the authority and discretion to waive the in-person interview for:

• First time H-2 visa applicants (temporary agricultural and non-agricultural workers); and
• Were previously issued a nonimmigrant visa in any classification, unless the only prior issued visa was a B visa; and
• Are applying within 48 months of their most recent nonimmigrant visa’s expiration date.

In all cases, applicants must meet certain legal requirements to qualify for an interview waiver.  Implementation of this authority begins January 1, 2024, and will be reviewed annually.  This authority is in place until further notice.

As a reminder, applicants renewing a nonimmigrant visa in the same classification within 48 months of the prior visa’s expiration date continue to be eligible for interview waiver until further notice. 

To be eligible for an interview waiver, applicants must also meet certain criteria, including that they:

• apply in their country of nationality or residence.
• have never been refused a visa (unless such refusal was overcome or waived).
• have no apparent or potential ineligibility.

Consular officers may still require in-person interviews on a case-by-case basis or because of local conditions.  We encourage applicants to check embassy and consulate websites for more detailed information about visa application requirements and procedures, and to learn more about the embassy’s operating status and services.
