South Africa Travel Advisory
Travel advisory february 5, 2024, south africa - level 2: exercise increased caution.
Updated to reflect safety consideration when using GPS navigation.
Exercise increased caution in South Africa due to crime and civil unrest .
Country Summary: Violent crime, such as armed robbery, rape, carjacking, mugging, and "smash-and-grab" attacks on vehicles, is common. There is a higher risk of violent crime in the central business districts of major cities after dark.
Using GPS navigation can lead to unsafe routes. GPS navigation may suggest shortcuts through townships as the quickest preferred route but can lead to increased risks of crime.
There have been incidents in which tourists traveling in Cape Town while using GPS navigation apps have been routed through residential areas with high rates of violent crime. The safest approach to return a rental car to Cape Town International Airport is to take the N2 highway and follow signs to Airport Approach Rd ( exit 16 ). Alternatively, request the rental car company to collect your vehicle and subsequently arrange an airport transfer from established taxi companies or established ridesharing services to reach the airport.
Demonstrations, protests, and strikes occur frequently. These can develop quickly without prior notification, often interrupting traffic, transportation, and other services; such events have the potential to turn violent.
Please see our Alerts for up-to-date information.
Read the country information page for additional information on travel to South Africa.
If you decide to travel to South Africa:
- Research your route in advance, stay on major highways, avoid shortcuts through townships, and avoid reliance on GPS navigation apps.
- Avoid walking alone, especially after dark.
- Avoid visiting informal settlement areas unless you are with someone familiar with the area.
- Do not display cash or valuables.
- Drive with doors locked and windows closed.
- Always carry a copy of your U.S. passport and visa (if applicable). Keep original documents in a secure location.
- Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program ( STEP ) to receive Alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.
- Follow the Department of State on Facebook and Twitter .
- Review the Country Security Report for South Africa.
- Prepare a contingency plan for emergency situations. Review the Traveler’s Checklist .

Garden Route & Addo Group Adventure - 6 Days
Outstanding overall experience. We saw and did a huge amount in a short time, the accommodation and food was terrific value and Mark did an outstanding job of keeping us all on track. On the minus side, it's a lot of time spent in a very cramped van.
5-Day Group Garden Route & Addo Adventure Tour (one-way)
Really enjoyed this trip. Nice size with 12 people, good mix of adventure and travel, really informative tour guide Gareth. Covered all my bucket list and more. Congo caves adventure tour was amazing as was zip lining, nice places to stay and great food.
Explore Cape Town & Kruger National Park National Geographic Journeys
This tour was one of the greatest travel experiences I've ever had. Our CEO Alfred Dovey led the way throughout South Africa with such care and knowledge about everything we did while providing clear direction of what each plan of the day was and where we needed to be. I feel was was able to see, learn and experience South Africa in a way I could have never done on my own. I highly recommend this G Adventure tour.
Kruger in Depth
The tour, operated by G Adventures, completed surpassed expectations by our party of three, with our total tour group minus the guide and driver numbering eleven. Transportation, accommodations, and meals were all above expectations. The guide "Hardy", and driver "Bennet" deserve special acknowledgement for an outstanding job with timely information, excellent communication skills, and knowledge that well exceeded any reasonable expectations. The tour involves a lot of travel due to the sheer size of the area being covered and is probably noy the best choice for a "downtime" or just relaxing trip. The ages in our party were 26, 58, and 63 and the tour was an excellent choice for us. Plan on meeting for breakfast around 5:30 am and dinner around 6:30 pm we a whole lot of experiences between the two. We combined this tour on our first week in South Africa with two down days in Jo-burg, and then a week of plains game hunting the following week. We are all a bit worn down but with memories, photos, and experiences that will last a lifetime.

Isaac was the best, always going out of his way to accommodate everyone in everyway. Had a great time with him and the tour was fab, hope I get Isaac again on another tour, definitely recommend
10 Days Cape Town, Garden Route & Addo Package
The guide really made the trip. Wendy was fantastic for the 6 day tour portion. Very accommodating and really made the trip. One great example is that my shark dive was cancelled and Wendy went above and beyond to reschedule and potentially see if I could switch vendors to get a better chance at seeing sharks. It was fantastic. After that 6 day tour was over, the full day Ultimate Cape Point tour with a different guide was great except we were unable to go to Muizenberg (not sure why, maybe we were off schedule or because we wanted to do the wine tasting). Overall I’d highly recommend this package and company.

Alfy the perfect CEO knowledgeable with a good sense of humour. Fantastic group of people on the tour with great accommodation and activities.
South Africa: Tryst with the Wild Life & the Iconic Cape Town
Great itinerary, would have added Soweto as part of the standard to make the experience complete. CapeTown guide/driver was very pleasant, knowledgeable, prompt, and made us feel safe.
South Africa : Wildlife, Garden Route & Mother City Cape Town
Our honeymoon vacation through South Africa was amazing! We got to see a little of everything and even with all the traveling around it was stress free. Our guide was terrific and we would 1000% book again!

South African Escape
Very comfortable pace tour, and u will get to see most of the good stuffs. It could have been shorter but at the expense of rush factor. But it's very comfortable for me. The tour guide Matt, and our driver Benny, were both very professional, with Benny also being a high average driver. Just take note of the optional tours and it's prices that you are keen to take up and prepare some cash in advance. Matt will arrange time for ATM visits occasionally though. Nice tour!

The tour was excellent thankyou Dylan Curtis to take care about the group all the time, he gave us the best Vibes from Africa. Nereida
Kruger Experience - Lodge (5 days)
My experience: 1. Awesome - for the Kruger National Park day tour on 1 Jan 2017 I had a very experienced and knowledgeable guide and plus some luck. Almost just at the entrance of the park we found that we were greeted by leopard - it was the New Year Day - 1 Jan 2017 and the first animal we saw it was the most rare one out of Big 5 to spot - leopard. I saw all Big 5 and plus hippos, wild dogs (both are very rare to see), lots of giraffes, zebras, various types of antelopes, wildebeests and birds. The guide was also like a zoology and biology teacher who taught us about various animals behaviours. 2. Awesome - game drives at Kapama private game reserve. I took additional 2 game drives making it in total 3 and all 3 of these game drives were different and great experiences with lots of Big 5 and other animals.
5 day Best of South Africa Highlights: Garden Route with Addo National Park
This is an excellent tour and I can wholeheartedly recommend it. The Hotspots2c team, both in the office before the tour and our guide were great, and the tour itself took us to some wonderful places. All the accommodation was very good and the activities were well chosen.
What people love about South Africa Tours
With Gareth we had a great, well organized short week, too short but ful of information, entertainment, fun.
An excellent tour which we couldn’t fault. Our guide, Rochelle, was superb. She was knowledgeable, always helpful and cheerful. We did everything we wanted to do and more. Highly recommended.

Announcing the Hot List Winners of 2024
By CNT Editors
It’s inevitable: Every spring when we pull together the Hot List , our annual collection of the world’s best new hotels, restaurants , and cruise ships , a staffer remarks that this latest iteration has got to be the best one ever. After a year’s worth of traveling the globe—to stay the night at a converted farmhouse in the middle of an olive grove outside Marrakech, or sail aboard a beloved cruise line’s inaugural Antarctic voyage—it’s easy to see why we get attached. But this year’s Hot List, our 28th edition, might really be the best one ever. It’s certainly our most diverse, featuring not only a hotel suite that was once Winston Churchill’s office, but also the world’s largest cruise ship and restaurants from Cape Town to Bali. We were surprised and inspired by this year’s honorees, and we know you will be too. These are the Hot List hotel winners for 2024.

South America Tours & Holidays
Colourful, candid and everything in-between. South America beats to the rhythm of an infectious, eternal drum.
It’s the sequined heat of Carnival and a cool breeze blowing across the Andes, a fiery Argentine tango and the soft silence of an Ecuadorian cloud forest. You taste it in the crackle of slow-cooked barbecue and the tang of a good pisco sour. About the only thing the continent lacks is monotony. From the rocky slopes of Galapagos to the dawn-lit ruins of Machu Picchu , South America is effervescent with sights, sounds and salsa. Now, pass the empanadas and let's talk adventure.

Did you know Africa Endeavours can book all your flights to and within South Africa? Give us a call to start planning!
Flying from the United States to South Africa
Johannesburg is the international hub of South Africa. From O.R. Tambo International Airport, you can fly onward to Cape Town or fly to several safari destinations in South Africa and beyond.
If you want a direct flight from the US to South Africa , there are only 3 options; all land in Johannesburg.
- South African Airways: New York City (JFK) to Johannesburg (JNB) Flight time: 15 hours
- South African Airways: Washington, D.C. (IAD) to Johannesburg (JNB) Flight time: 17 hours
- Delta Air Lines: Atlanta (ATL) to Johannesburg (JNB) Flight time: 15 hours
If you want to save money or don’t mind a stopover, there are several options for indirect flights. Dubai, U.A.E., and Doha, Qatar, are both safe, lively cities that make great stopover destinations in the Middle East; from there, it’s around 5-6 hours to Johannesburg. Or, you can choose to take a break in Europe; London and Amsterdam are common stopovers. From there, you can fly to Johannesburg or direct to Cape Town.

How Much Do Flights to South Africa Cost?
In our experience, you can expect to spend around $1,200-1,500 USD per person for a return-trip, economy class ticket to South Africa on a reputable airline. Keep in mind, this is only for international airfare; flights within the US and within South Africa are additional.
There are deals to be found and you may come across cheaper airfare, but there are a few pitfalls to look out for with budget flights.
- How long is the layover? Cheaper flights often have layovers of 10 hours or more, so you may need to factor in the cost of a hotel.
- Is the airline safe and comfortable? When flying to South Africa, you will be in the air for at least 10 hours. Make sure the airline you’re using has a strong safety record, and consider upgrading your seat for a more comfortable flight.
- What time of year are the flights? Airfare is always cheaper in the off season, but the weather may not be ideal for your trip. Safari travel is extremely seasonal, and it’s certainly worthwhile to visit at peak wildlife viewing times.
- Are you booking through a third party? From our experience, we do not recommend booking flights through third-party sites. If any of your flights are cancelled or delayed, the company you booked through likely won’t do much to help.

How to Get Around South Africa
South Africa is well developed for tourism, and there are several ways to get around the country. Our luxury travel designers can advise you of the best options based on your timeframe and budget.
- Commercial Flights
Commercial flights will bring you between major cities (i.e. Johannesburg to Cape Town) or from the city to several airports around the country, from which you can transfer to your safari lodge.
For a safari in Kruger National Park, you can fly to Kruger/Mpumalanga International Airport, Skukuza, or Hoedspruit, and take a road transfer from there to your safari lodge.
- “Lodge Hop” Flights
Many safari lodges have private airstrips that you can fly into via light aircraft. It’s important to note that these small planes have strict weight limits.
A soft-sided bag without a frame is a must, and a weight limit of 15-20 kg for all of your luggage (including cameras and handheld bags) is strictly enforced. If you exceed the limit, you may have to pay for an extra seat on the flight or make other arrangements for your baggage; either way, it’s best to follow the weight limit and avoid the additional expense!
- Private Transfers
Private car transfers are an excellent option for short distances, such as traveling from Cape Town to the Winelands. Private transfers are also an option from Johannesburg to safari game reserves such as Madikwe, Thanda, Marataba, Phinda, Pilanesberg, and more.
Keep in mind, a road transfer to your safari lodge is not the most comfortable option. The locals call it an “African massage” due to the bumpy, unpaved roads. However, road transfers are considerably cheaper than lodge hop flights.
- Self-Driving
If you’re comfortable driving on the left side of the road, self-driving can be a great option to get around. Car rentals are affordable in South Africa, and the roads in tourist areas such as Cape Town, the Winelands, and the Garden Route are well paved and easy to navigate. (We typically don’t recommend self-driving outside of these areas.)
- Uber or Taxi
In major South African cities, you can easily get around town using Ubers or taxis. As a bonus, the rides are much cheaper in South Africa than you’re probably used to back home!
If you aren’t in a rush and want to indulge in the classic African luxury experience, consider a trip on one of South Africa’s luxury rails, like the Rovos Rail or the Blue Train. The onboard experience hearkens back to a romantic bygone era, though the spacious cars have been updated with modern comforts. You can journey within South Africa or embark on a multi-country expedition.
