WKBW - Buffalo, New York

Travel advisories issued in towns, cities across Western New York during snow storm

Winter Weather storm Oklahoma

WKBW — Several municipalities issued travel advisories Monday due to severe winter weather.

Both Lockport and Niagara Falls issued a travel ban for drivers early on Monday. As of the evening, the travel advisory in Niagara County has been lifted, but drivers are urged to continue to use caution.

In an updated release Monday evening, Niagara Falls announced the ban was lifted and is now a travel advisory.

“Throughout the rest of the evening If you do not need to travel, please stay home so our crews can continue to work on clearing the streets," said Niagara Falls Mayor Robert Restaino. The release says plows will now begin treating residential streets and the alternate parking restrictions have been suspended for the evening.

The City of North Tonawanda also issued a travel ban Monday. North Tonawanda Police tweeted that the ban is in effect until 6:00 p.m.

Here’s How The Niagara Falls Region Is Readying For An Influx Of Eclipse Tourists

N iagara Falls could be at the center of the solar eclipse frenzy on April 8—and the region is bracing itself with countless marketing campaigns, a state of emergency declaration, school closures and dozens of scheduled events throughout the region.

In Canada, Niagara Region chair Jim Bradley “proactively” declared a state of emergency Thursday in anticipation of “thousands of visitors” coming to the region for the April 8 event.

Bradley said a declaration “strengthens the tools” the Region has to “safeguard the health and safety of residents and visitors and protect our critical infrastructure in any scenario that might arise.”

Officials in the city of Niagara Falls, Ontario, have said they expect up to a million visitors on April 8, compared to the typical 14 million visitors who travel there over the course of the year just to see the famous waterfalls, according to Reuters, while a tourism group for the City of Niagara Falls in the U.S. says it’s planning a fireworks display and various programming with NASA in anticipation of the “largest influx of visitors” the city has ever had.

Dozens of events and promotions are planned throughout the Buffalo Niagara area in the U.S., from local business viewing parties , to breweries crafting specialty beers , to larger events like a three-hour viewing party at the Buffalo Bills’ Highmark Stadium —sponsored by an eye doctor practice.

Dozens of school districts across the Buffalo Niagara eight-county region have already closed schools for the day—the region’s largest, Buffalo Public Schools, cited the timing of the eclipse with student dismissal “and increased tourism which may impact traffic and roadways.”

Local officials are urging residents to prepare for traffic delays if going out to see the eclipse, and noting “the easiest way to see the eclipse is from your home.”

$6,000. That’s how much one Buffalo-area Airbnb was charging for two nights for the eclipse, according to the Buffalo News. A search of prices for one night from April 8-9 at several area hotels showed prices of up to $800 for a one-bed hotel room. Airbnb told local television station WKBW in Buffalo that New York was the “most booked” state for the eclipse.

What To Watch For

The start of the eclipse is set to reach Niagara Falls at 2:04 p.m. on April 8, and the sun will be fully eclipsed for about three minutes, starting at 3:18 p.m.For those viewing in person, it remains an open question whether the skies will stay clear and allow for favorable eclipse viewing, with some forecasts calling for clouds—though experts warn predicting cloud cover for a specific area 10 days out is an extremely low-confidence forecast.

Key Background

The eclipse will be visible throughout the entire U.S., but the path of totality follows a narrow band from Texas up to the Northeast NASA is broadcasting the event live from several key areas along the path, including Niagara Falls. There will not be another solar eclipse visible from the contiguous U.S. until 2044, according to NASA.

Niagara Parks and Local Municipalities Announce Traffic Management and Safety Plan for Upcoming Total Solar Eclipse

March 25, 2024

Niagara Parks

  • Road closures will be in place across Niagara Parks properties, the City of Niagara Falls and Town of Fort Erie on Monday, April 8
  • Traffic delays expected, guests advised to plan ahead for the upcoming total solar eclipse
  • All road closures are at the discretion of police and could be adjusted as required
  • Parking lots available throughout the destination including at Rapidsview Parking Lot with a dedicated WEGO Shuttle to the Falls
  • Access to boat launches will be limited on Monday, April 8

Niagara Falls, ON – In anticipation of high visitation levels in Niagara Falls and Fort Erie with guests traveling to the area to view the upcoming total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024, a road closure plan will be implemented to reduce challenges due to vehicular congestion and increase the safety of pedestrians.

On Monday, April 8, 2024, Niagara Falls and the Town of Fort Erie will be directly in the path of totality to experience a total solar eclipse around 3:18 p.m. The once-in-a-lifetime celestial event is expected to bring large amounts of people to the region for the unique chance to view one of the world’s most spectacular natural phenomenon taking place over another – Niagara Falls. For more information about events and programming related to the eclipse, please visit niagaraparks.com/eclipse .

The Niagara Parks Police Service (NPPS) is continuing to work with the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS), local emergency services, municipalities and other stakeholders, to develop and implement a robust and integrated safety plan to support the expected influx of people to the region and particularly Niagara Falls and Fort Erie. As part of this planning, a series of road closures will be in place throughout the day of the eclipse.

City of Niagara Falls

On Monday, April 8, 2024, in the City of Niagara Falls, the Niagara Parkway will be closed to vehicular traffic from Queen Street to Fraser Hill, beginning at 12 p.m. until 12 a.m. midnight, coinciding with the concert in Queen Victoria Park that afternoon and evening and the fireworks planned for 10 p.m. Clifton Hill from Victoria Avenue to Falls Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic beginning at 12 p.m. noon until 12 a.m. midnight, along with Murray Street from the Niagara Parkway to Fallsview Boulevard.

For information concerning alternative access and parking for the businesses and properties within the road closure area, please contact the respective businesses to inquire. Access to Niagara Parks’ Falls Parking Lot will continue from the south.

Town of Fort Erie

Road closures are also planned for the Town of Fort Erie on Monday, April 8, beginning at 8 a.m. The south Niagara Parkway (Niagara Boulevard) will be closed in both directions from Central Avenue to Dominion Road, as well as Dominion to Albert Street. As a reminder, the south Niagara Parkway remains closed from Netherby Road to Townline Road (detour in place), due to construction on the Black Creek Bridge.

All road closures will be at the discretion of the Niagara Parks Police Service and Niagara Regional Police Service and timing may be adjusted as required.

Parking and Transportation

Guests are advised to plan for the road closures and anticipated traffic delays by preparing to park and walk or take public transit to their preferred viewing location for the solar eclipse. There are a number of parking lots throughout Niagara Parks properties and the City of Niagara Falls, including Niagara Parks’ Rapidsview Parking Lot (located on Upper Rapids Boulevard) with a WEGO shuttle to Table Rock Centre at the brink of the Falls. The Falls Incline Railway will operate on an extended schedule to transport guests from the upper Fallsview area to Table Rock Centre. For more information about parking and transportation at Niagara Parks, visit niagaraparks.com/parking .

Public Transit

With the expected traffic congestion and gridlock both into and throughout the destination, guests are encouraged to consider taking public transit such as the WEGO Bus Service and GO Transit into Niagara Falls.

Niagara Parks’ WEGO Green Line will be rerouted during the road closures and will include a WEGO shuttle from Rapidsview to Table Rock, as well as WEGO bus service to transport guests traveling into the destination on GO Transit. GO and WEGO combination tickets can be purchased. As well, GO Transit will be providing special event service on Monday, April 8. Click here for more information.

WEGO Red line and Blue line will move to reduced routing due to the road closures. Service delays and disruptions should be expected for any routes travelling through the tourism area. For up to the minute bus arrival information please download and refer to the “TRANSIT APP”.

Boat Launches

Aligning with direction across the region and under guidance of the Niagara Parks Police Service, Niagara Parks will be closing access to all public boat launches on its property on Monday, April 8. The City of Niagara Falls Welland River (Chippawa) boat launch will also be closed to the public on Monday, April 8. Only emergency services will have access to the launch.

Guest Planning Considerations

In addition to parking and transportation, there are a number of other tips to consider for guests planning to view the solar eclipse in Niagara Falls and Fort Erie:

  • Looking directly at the sun during an eclipse without designated viewing glasses (ISO 12312-2 international standard) can cause serious damage such as partial or complete loss of eyesight.
  • Niagara Parks will have a limited supply of viewing glasses at certain locations; however, it is recommended that guests bring their own to avoid disappointment.
  • While the road closures are planned for Monday, April 8, increased traffic congestion in and around the Niagara region is expected to begin on Friday, April 5 and build throughout the weekend.
  • The expected traffic congestion and gridlock could impact guest movement and access to supplies and amenities; all guests should be prepared and have a full gas tank, extra water and food.
  • Weather can be unpredictable by the Falls and can change quickly.
  • If cell signal does get overwhelmed, it is possible that electronic pay systems may be unavailable – guests should plan to bring cash if needed.
  • Niagara Parks does not permit tents or shade structures of any kind throughout the Queen Victoria Park area (Clifton Hill to Kingsbridge Park).

NY officials warn of major gridlock across state during total solar eclipse

How you can enjoy the 2024 solar eclipse.

FOX 5 NY speaks with Clint Henderson from The Points Guy to find out the best ways to experience the solar eclipse set for April 8.

NEW YORK - The Great North American Eclipse is coming on April 8, and so are swarms of people.

Hundreds of thousands of tourists are expected to flock to New York to witness the once-in-a-generation occasion ‐ likely causing major traffic jams in and around the state.

The eclipse will likely clog traffic across the state.

Governor Kathy Hochul says travelers can expect high volumes of traffic as numerous eclipse-viewing events are being held across the state.

To reduce traffic, construction and lane closures will be paused during the eclipse.

"New York is ready to welcome millions of visitors, and my administration has been working hard to ensure everyone in the path of the eclipse can safely enjoy this rare event. I encourage anyone traveling for this experience to plan on arriving early to their destination and staying late to enjoy all of what our state has to offer,"

Niagara County alone expects one million tourists to attend, according to The Points Guy, Clint Henderson.

Rochester is expecting 500,000 tourists, which is about double the city's population.

All drivers should prepare for a high volume of traffic over the weekend leading up to the eclipse and through April 9, officials warn.

Even though the NYC area will miss out on the chance of total darkness,

Even the FAA is warning travelers to expect delays and possible cancelations on the week of the eclipse.

Driving during the eclipse

Travelers are advised to get to their destination early and plan on staying late to avoid the most traffic, allow for extra travel time, and travel prepared with food and water.

The New York State Thruway Authority released dos and don'ts for traveling across the interstate.

  • Get to your destination early and stay late
  • Add in extra time to get to your destination
  • Don’t park on shoulder of highways or stop in the middle of traffic
  • Do not stand on the side of highways

travel advisory niagara falls ny

The path of totality runs from Jamestown through Rochester and then onto Plattsburgh, causing traffic hot spots in the northern and western parts of the state.

"We love that so many people are planning to come here to experience the eclipse, but we also don't want everyone to spend most of their trip stuck in traffic," director of state operations Kathryn Garcia says.

Eclipse hot spots

Here are popular destinations for the rare celestial extravaganza that will likely cause tons of traffic jams.

Niagara Falls (Niagara County)

  • Distance from NYC: Approx. 400 miles (7-hour drive)
