the tour itself was amazing. The national parks do not disappoint. The travel accomodations were very cramped and uncomfortable. I am only 5 foot tall and I was cramped in this 14 passenger van. Food opportunities were limited.
Fantastic experience - efficient use of time, great itinerary. Well-informed and interesting guide who is also just a great person.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 day (2 nights) tour. The scenery of Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, Antelope Canyon & the Grand Canyon were spectacular. Accomodation was very good. Our guide Katelyn was excellent, very helpful & a careful driver. We were fortunate to be in a small group. If the bus was full may have been difficult, especially being tall.
Hogan was our tour guide driver, fun fact infotainment, cook, photographer... he was outstanding.

Handled adversity well.
1. The bus driver, did an excellent job. 2. We could of used a better bus with a bathroom 3. The tour guides were good, they were very informative about our activities 4. The motels chosen were ver ckean 5. The length of time, was right for the amount of days 6. The travel packet i received needed clearer instructions, the hotel staff were not familiar with this tour operator. nor were they able to help me. 7. The security guard berween the luxor and the excalibur srated "the bus location and pick up tours:, was the place to be. 8. I was in the wrong location, after talking to your customer service, which at first she was hesitating to help me. She finslly was sble to contact me with Patrivia. Whom did not hesitate to contact me via text. Aand pick me up! Patricia's excellent customer service. Changed the entire scenario., and made it possible for me to join this wonderful 3 day tour of sightseeing. Photography. And hiking.

Everything was great. We enjoyed the pacing of our itinerary and our guide Gogee was excellent.
The Mighty 5 Tour was mighty fine! Aaron, our tour guide, was amazing. Seeing 5 National Parks in 5 days is a daunting feat but he did a great job in showing us the highlights and also asking our group if we had any requests. He honored them and was great at tailoring our tour to our group and our hiking abilities. We would highly recommend this tour and guide!

We were fortunate to have Claire Kredens as our driver guide. She is a gifted leader and could cope with ant situation. Such a tour is useful to learn which cities you might like to re-visit because our time in each is very short. Four and five hour drives every other day is exhausting and maybe the number of places visited could be edited downward. On the whole, I enjoyed the trip altho the age range 15-99 is unwise. 15-80 would be much more realistic.
My son and I had a great hiking adventure on the Sedona tour! The scenery was stunning, the hikes were fun! Tolman was an excellent guide, who was very knowledgeable about the area, he had great hiking tips, and he picked some enjoyable challenging hikes for us! He was also an excellent cook! He prepared us some great meals! His positive outlook on everything helped the group of strangers on the trek quickly bond which led us all to have a great hiking experience!

Although the tour was very expensive- over $2000 for 3 days is over the top- it wss a great experience, saw lots of wildlife and the guide was outstanding
What an amazing experience this was; from the greeting and pick up by our guide/driver, to the phenomenal sights and the historical references that accompanied them! I am so pleased. This was an exceptionally planned tour that successfully met all of my needs. I would not change a thing and look forward to future adventures with them.

Excellent. Great guide, driver, weather, hotels, food. Great itenirary. Love love this trip.
Optional excursions were reasonably priced. Suggest you put together other places in each city as a walking guide or short taxi or uber ride. Example access to close by museums open late and could walk to from hotel. Free time activities and what they are and where located is helpful.tour guide can offer to accompany a group interested to explore more during free leisure tome.Provide more detail info about the logistics of site visits. Niagara falls..suggest more water proof gear clothing and shoe types etc. Terrain to expect when visiting certain sites and possible alternatives.climbing and how difficult-easy or more strenuous or advanced climbing activity. Overall, small groups so much better than filling up bus. Thank you for giving single travelers their own bus space. Would love to watch more travel videos on longer driving distances.

Good time with lots of riding in the van going to interesting places
We had a wonderful time. The tour was well planned and well managed. The CEO was excellent ..good driver, good communicator, had good knowledge of the local attractions and made great recommendations for restaurants. The group we were with was also a very pleasant group which made the experience that much more enjoyable. That said, would have loved to see the accommodations updated.. most except the Denali cabins were old and "weathered".

Infinite Adventures

It was my first group trip and also my first camping trip. I have to say it was one of the best trips I've been on. It was an adventure! We were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights at Remote Camp. Tory and Dave took care of everything and made sure everyone had a great time. No matter what problem you had, they always helped each other! Dave cooked delicious food, we had marshmallows by the fire in the evening and it felt like family. It's a great tour and I can only recommend it to anyone! It certainly wasn't my last tour with Infinite Adventure! Many thanks to Tory, Dave and Natalie (who you could ask any question you wanted to know beforehand) for this unforgettable time! :)
Jump on the bus with Infinite Adventures for a magnificent Alaskan expedition! Dave and Tory are excellent guides and will keep you informed about the areas you visit and give expert advice. I found this to be a truly joyful experience!

The Coyote Trip

The Coyote Trip

  • Good - 11 reviews for USA tours
This trip was run like a school trip, we were told that we had to stick to the schedule rigidly even though I asked several times to visit a different museum/shop. Free time was limited and it seemed like the guide had specific ideas of what he wanted to do and see. Our guide also left us on a subway in New York to get home close to midnight and then we had issues getting checked into the hostel. FYI most tour guides make sure their group gets to the hotel safely and without hassle. Waste of time and money.
From a speedboat to the Statue of Liberty to fireworks on 4th July in Washington to hiking to Yosemite Falls, this trip showcased the very best the USA has to offer. I went on the 21 day Full Cyote trip from New York to San Francisco with my brother. With such a packed itinerary of included activities, it offered great value for money. The guides in every region we visited were excellent. A particular shout out to Ryan, who added in extra stops and experiences based on the group's interests. Other highlights included the Grand Canyon, Washington's museums, whale watching in Boston, cycling across the Golden Gate Bridge and sunset in Griffeths Park. I met a great group of people on the trip, and I wouldn't hesitate to book with the Cyote Trip again.

Globus

I was skeptical of a group tour, particularly by coach. The experienced guide, Jason, along with driver Shauna, changed my view completely.

Had a wonderful time - a lot of hiking, seeing the sites in Alaska and viewing the Northern Lights.

Good trip, covered all the main areas. Guides were very knowledgeable and informative. Accommodation excellent and bus very comfortable.
We have chosen the tour specifically because it was in German and also in other languages shown. Also on our voucher was again confirmed the tour with professional, German-speaking tour guide. Unfortunately, the tour guides did not speak German. We were able to help ourselves a bit with the translation app but we also missed a lot of information. We are very disappointed about this and expect compensation. The tour guides have tried and were very nice also the tour was very nice.

Bamba Travel

Bamba Travel

The itinerary provided by tour radar was not exactly how the tour was set up. One of our stops said we would be doing a cruise on lake Powell. That was not provided with the tour. Also the hotels that they said we would be staying at did not line up.
Overall, the tour was very fun and we'll put together. The tour guides were all friendly, and seemed to work well as a team. Accomodations were not bad, but there were better options directly adjacent. Food options were pretty much all fast food, which makes sense for the tour concept. However, dinner options could have been a bit better. We really would have appreciated a little more hiking and exploring time, and a couple of the guides did the best to accommodate that. However, 20 minute stops are just not enough time to get "out and experience" the areas.

War ein tolles Erlebnis. Ich hätte mir mehr Zeit im Yosemite Park gewünscht. Und das Death Valley sollte vielleicht ein fester Bestandteil der Reise sein. Ansonsten war alles super.
This was a fast but nice tour and Dave was a good guide. Only in LA i thought we should have had more time but it was perfect for a Solo Travler

The Top 15 Tour Operators in 2021

Scott Bay is a magazine editor specializing in travel, architecture, and gear. He was previously an assistant editor at Travel + Leisure . His work has also appeared in Wired , Architectural Digest , Wallpaper , Robb Report , Saveur , Daily Beast , and more.

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite tour operators .

This year's World's Best Awards survey was open for voting January 11 through May 10, 2021, as destinations around the world were lifting COVID-19 restrictions. Survey rules have always allowed readers to reflect on their travel experiences over a three-year period. We hope that this year's honorees will inspire your own travels as you get back out into the world.

Linking up with the right tour operator can take an amazing trip and turn it into a trip of a lifetime . This might seem like magic, but their in-the-know expertise and long-standing relationships open the doors for the seemingly impossible — a private Jeep safari with a professional tracking team in the depths of Torres del Paine or one-on-one cooking classes from a chef that runs a Michelin-starred restaurant in the south of France. And if any group has traversed the world enough to discern the best tour operators out there, it's the readers of Travel + Leisure .

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city or resort based on their locations and amenities.

The companies that made the list have the skills and connections to create itineraries that reflect their clients' personal interests. No. 3 VBT Bicycling Vacations curates two-wheeled trips all over the globe . One reader said, "Their staff make all the difference." No. 2 Mountain Lodges of Peru puts together highly personalized trekking adventures to Machu Picchu. As another reader exclaimed, "This is the way to visit Machu Picchu!"

But at the top of the list is Quasar Expeditions. Though primarily known for its cruises (the company won the small-ship ocean cruises category this year), it also operates a roster of dynamic safari-style excursions in South America. Read on to find out what sets it apart and which other companies join it on this year's list of the best tour operators in the world.

1. Quasar Expeditions

Quasar Expeditions is for adventurers. The highly specialized itineraries are designed to make guests feel like they're James Cook or Charles Darwin. "Quasar Expeditions' guides are the ultimate, passionate gatekeepers to the Galápagos Islands," one reader said. "Their enthusiasm and love of the islands and the wildlife encourages you to share in their passion and desire to conserve the natural beauty and habitat of the area while still allowing low-impact tourism." Another raved, "Excellent isn't a high enough rating to describe our experience with Quasar Expeditions. Extraordinary in every way!" And while Quasar is best known for its Galápagos trips, it gets high marks for its Patagonia itineraries, which takes guests into the best parts of Chile's Torres del Paine and Argentina's Los Glaciares — two of South America's most spectacular national parks.

The Difference Between Tour Operators & Travel Agents

Slide 1

28 Sep 2023 Quite a common question for anyone not working in the travel industry is about the difference between a tour operator and a travel agent. Both terms are, in effect, industry jargon and we expect the consumer to work out what the difference is. So let's clear that up. What Is a Tour Operator?   A tour operator is a person or company that thinks up ideas for holidays, researches the ideas, designs the holiday itinerary and content, contracts the services needed for the holiday, accommodation, transport, guides, tour leaders or resort reps and then markets the resultant package. They sell the package either directly to the consumer or use the services of a travel agent to do so. A tour operator sells the product that they themselves create. They do not sell anybody else's packages, they sell only their own creations. A tour operator is what in law is referred to as a "principal", meaning they take responsibility for the package that they create and cover that liability with (usually) an ATOL licence and / or some form of bonding to ensure that the consumer gets their money back if the tour operator fails, or is flown home if they are abroad when a tour operator fails.   It's worth mentioning that, with regard to bonding for financial protection, the law asks that certain items or services must be bonded; AITO demands that all its tour operators bond anything they sell to the consumer; this is in excess of what the law demands, to the benefit of the consumer. Who does a Travel Agent Differ?    On the other hand, a travel agent offers the consumer a range of holiday packages that have been put together by a tour operator. They do not, in theory, put together any of their own packages; they sell lots of different holidays put together by lots of different tour operators. They do not usually design or create the holidays they sell, and they do not act as a Principal. The tour operator whose product they sell takes the responsibility for the holiday; the travel agent does not. Therefore the agent usually does not have an ATOL licence or any bonding in place, but relies on the tour operator to cover this.   Nowadays it is fair to say, the difference between tour operator and travel agent is blurred. Some travel agents do create some packages, and therefore do act as a Principal and have the required licences, but they will also sell other product put together by tour operators.   A good analogy goes like this: if you want to buy a dining room table and chairs, you have two choices. You can go directly to the factory where one particular company makes the table and chairs and buy from the creator of the product. But you will only, at that factory, see furniture made by that one manufacturer. If you go to a high street store and browse their furniture department, you can choose from a range of furniture made by several different furniture makers, but none of the furniture has been made by the high street retail store.   In travel, the manufacturer, the factory, is the tour operator. The high street retail store is the travel agent. It's up to you whether you prefer to (a) talk to the creator or the product, or (b) have a wide range of product from different manufacturers to choose from.  Why Book With a Tour Operator or Travel Agent?   Another common question is why a potential traveller should book their holiday arrangements with a tour operator rather than doing it themselves. The answer to this question covers tour operators and travel agents - both are offering commercially assembled holidays.   It is possible to spend hours researching a possible destination, pondering over the best itinerary, checking for the best hotels and so on. Or you can book with a tour operator who has done all that research and chosen wisely based on their experience and knowledge. If you design your own itinerary it can be fun, but if something goes wrong then you are on your own. A tour operator has a legal responsibility to look after you if things go awry. Strikes, natural disasters, personal illness and several other disasters can befall the traveller, better to have someone to take care of things at such critical times. If your overseas hotel ceases trading when you are there, or on your way there, you are on your own; whereas a tour operator will make alternative arrangements. When the Tsunami struck in Thailand some years ago, all the clients who had booked with a tour operator were helped by their tour operator; they were moved to alternative accommodation or flown home. Travellers who had booked their own arrangements were left to fend for themselves. "It's always the individual travellers who we can't locate and help", said someone at the Foreign Office Travel Unit, "since they don't tell us where they are going".   If you want to assemble that dining room table and chairs yourself it's perfectly possible to buy some wood or other, practice a bit with a saw and then start creating your furniture masterpiece (have some bandages and some glue handy just in case). Or you can go to a furniture factory or retail shop and buy a carefully crafted piece of furniture. Most people do the latter when it comes to furniture - why be any less careful when it comes to making travel arrangements? Make it yourself or buy from a professional - it's your choice. What is the Role of AITO?    A third question is why look at AITO for holiday ideas and help? Imagine if you could get over 100 tour operators all in one place, each with their own special holidays. Imagine if each operator had specialist knowledge about one particular destination or style of holiday. And imagine if each of the tour operators was independently owned. That is, each was run by the people who own it and who are passionate about what they sell. If you actually want all that, visit aito.com and it's all here in one place.

For those truly epic, once-in-a-lifetime destinations, you want to leave your itinerary to the experts. Whether your dream is to see the Big Five on an African Safari, trek tall mountains, explore European cities, or something even wilder, a group tour is the easiest way to do it.

However, picking the wrong group tour company is the quickest way to ruin your trip. Make sure you choose a tour company that aligns with your goals and travel styles. Do you want an intimate group tour or do you prefer to make lots of new friends in a big group? Does the price line up with what you like (luxury vs. budget)? Is the itinerary going to all the places you want to see?

We’ve done the research and found the very best group travel tour companies for 2023 for every type of traveler.

Best Overall Group Travel: Exodus Travels

Images of nature around the mountains and lakes of Slovenia as seen on the Exodus Travels' Lakes and Mountains of Slovenia walking tour

With trips on every continent, Exodus Travels covers anywhere on this planet that you could possibly want to go, from popular destinations like the Amalfi Coast to well off-the-beaten path adventures like Tajikistan. This award-winning group travel company boasts thousands of repeat customers who sign up for trips year after year (97% of past participants would recommend Exodus Travels to a friend).

These small group tours operate with only around 12-16 people, and always feature experienced local leaders who can give you a unique insight into your destination. Exodus Travels caters to any type of travel style, including trips broken down by type of activity (think walking, cycling, multi-adventure, winter, or cultural) as well as type of traveler (family, age group, etc.). There are curated collections (coastal, “away from it all”, European wilderness, and trips of a lifetime) to inspire you, as well as self-guided options for when you want all the benefits of a group tour planner without the actual group. Looking for that special safari? Exodus Travels just partners with the African Wildlife Foundation to create carefully curated luxury adventures that go above and beyond the standard safari.

Exodus Travels tours work for almost any budget, with options that range from affordable to premium.

Top Trip: Explore under-the-radar Europe by foot on Exodus Travels’ Lakes & Mountains of Slovenia walking tour .

World Expeditions aims to leave communities and places where they operate tours better than they found them. World Expeditions’ trips are capped at just 16 people to provide a good experience for participants, and there are no single supplements for solo travelers willing to share a room with someone of the same gender.

Top Trip: Summit Africa’s tallest mountain on a fully-supported trek up Kilimanjaro on World Expeditions’ eight day trip up the beautiful Lemosho Route .

G Adventures keeps costs down by opting for cheaper hotels and local meals, and making certain activities optional (for an additional cost). Pick your travel style—options range from “basic” to more luxe tours run in partnership with National Geographic. Family tours, local living tours (featuring homestays), and wellness-focused tours are also available.

Top Trip: G Adventures’ China Express trip is a great way to see the highlights of China if you’re short on both time and budget.

Understanding the Difference Between Tour Operators and Travel Agents

Rebecca Somes

By Rebecca Somes

Tour Operators and Travel Agents

Tour operators and travel agents might seem similar at first glance, but they have distinct roles when it comes to planning a vacation. While they both offer some similar services, it’s helpful to know which one best fits certain needs.

What is a Tour Operator?

A tour operator handles the nitty-gritty of a holiday experience, from booking and packaging to organising accommodation, transport, meals, guides, and optional tours. They’re like the behind-the-scenes magicians who ensure everything runs smoothly once a customer steps off the plane at a destination

On the other hand, travel agents act as matchmakers, connecting customers with the perfect vacation package from various tour operators. They’re like personal travel advisors, helping navigate through different destinations, budgets, and travel preferences to find the ideal fit for a dream getaway. Once customers have made a choice, they liaise with the tour operator to ensure all requests are met, handling the paperwork and payments along the way.

In the past, travel agents were the go-to choice for booking tour packages. However, with the rise of the internet and travel technology over the last couple of decades, many people now opt to book directly with tour operators. The internet has made it easier than ever to access and book tour packages independently, reducing the need for an agent to identify available operators. Nowadays, most tour operators engage directly with clients and sell their packages, cutting out the middleman.

However, some people still prefer to rely on their trusted local or family travel agent, with whom they have built a long-standing relationship over the years.

Types of Travel Agency

Tour Operators and Travel Agents

In the travel industry, there’s a growing number of independent travel agents who operate without ties to a specific agency. This presents a fantastic opportunity for people looking for remote work in the travel sector.

These independent agents come in various forms. Some create bespoke itineraries tailored to each client’s preferences, while others partner with specific travel companies. Additionally, some act as resellers, offering pre-packaged tours through Host Agencies.

Regardless of their specific model, most travel agents excel at helping to plan a trip. They use their expertise to provide recommendations based on their customer’s interests, budgets, and travel requirements. The advantage of working with a travel agent lies in their insider knowledge and knack for navigating the complexities of holiday planning and booking. When it comes to travel agencies, there’s a varied range of options available to suit every preference. Here are some of the different types of travel agencies:

Online Travel Agencies (OTAs): These are websites that allow users to search and book travel-related services online. OTAs offer a wide range of options, from flights and cruises to tours and activities, all in one convenient platform.

Brick-and-Mortar Travel Agencies: These are traditional travel agencies with physical offices where customers can visit and speak with travel agents face-to-face. They provide personalized service and assistance in planning and booking travel arrangements.

Corporate Travel Agencies: Specializing in business travel, corporate travel agencies cater to the needs of companies and organizations. They manage corporate travel policies, negotiate discounts with suppliers, and help with itinerary planning and expense management.

Specialist Travel Agencies: These agencies focus on specific types of travel, such as adventure travel, luxury travel, or niche markets like eco-tourism or culinary tours. They offer expertise and tailored recommendations for travellers with particular interests or preferences.

Overall, the travel agency landscape is diverse and caters to a wide range of travellers, each with unique needs and preferences.

The Roles of Tour Operators and Travel Agents

In conclusion, while tour operators and travel agents share some similarities, they play distinct roles in the holiday planning process. Tour operators handle the logistics of a vacation, from booking and packaging to on-the-ground arrangements, ensuring a hassle free experience for travellers. On the other hand, travel agents act as intermediaries, connecting customers with the perfect holiday package from various tour operators, and offering personalized advice and assistance throughout the planning process. Despite the rise of online booking platforms and websites , many travellers still rely on trusted travel agents for their expertise and insider knowledge. Additionally, the travel agency landscape continues to evolve, with independent agents offering bespoke services and various types of agencies catering to different travel needs and preferences. Ultimately, whether booking through a tour operator or a travel agent, travellers have access to a diverse range of options to suit their individual preferences and requirements thanks to the advancements in travel technology and products .

Mapping Megan

Travel agencies and tour operators both are necessary for the travel industry. But sometimes the question arises re their actual definition.

How are they different?

If you’re often confused by the difference between a travel agency and a tour operator, we’re going to discuss these two roles, and outline the significant differences between them.

They’re often connected, but are not the same.

The Difference Between a Travel Agency and a Tour Operator

Travel agency.

A travel agency is a company who plans, arranges, books, and makes the necessary arrangements for travellers. They sell flights, accommodation and tours, and package them together for travels who don’t wish to book themselves.

Worth noting that there are now many independent travel agents, who take on this role without being connected to an agency, and this can be  a great travel industry job  for people who want to work remotely.

There are several types of travel agents. Some put together itineraries from scratch for their clients while others work for specific travel companies, and some are mere resellers of pre-packaged tours on behalf of Host Agencies.

However most will help you plan your trip, and make suggestions based on your interests, your budget , and your travel requirements, the benefit here being that they’re experts in booking travel, and know the best tricks for planning and booking a holiday.

Pro tip:  An MLM scheme can usually be identified when there is a set-up cost involved in working for the company as an agent.  You shouldn’t have to pay to work for someone.

Travel agents are professionals – in many countries agencies need a travel agency license , meaning they are qualified and licensed to book trips on behalf of other people.

The way they make money is through access to industry discounts from companies they work with, which allows them to add a markup / commission to make money without charging more to the traveler.

Tour Operators

A tour operator is someone who organizes, prepares and runs a holiday tour. If you book a tour which includes accommodation, transport, breakfast, tour guides, and sightseeing etc, this is organized by the operator.

Essentially, they sell a product that they themselves create. They work with suppliers to create a packaged tour which they put their own price tag on, and can be booked by travel agents for their clients, or by the traveler directly.

They do not sell anybody else’s packages (which travel agents do), they only organize and sell their own tours.

Just as there are many different types of agents, there also are many different types of tour operators , including  inbound tour operators, outbound tour operators, domestic tour operators, and ground tour operators.

Though even inbound and outbound tour operators, who bring tourists to a country and handle all the arrangements in that country, will hire local travel agents to book in things like airport transfers, and maybe even hire ground tour operators for the tour itself.

With advances in technology, many travelers now book their packages directly with the tour operators rather than going to a travel agent, where-as in the past travel agencies were often the only option for connecting with a tour.

Key Differences Between Travel Agencies and Tour Operators

➤ Travel agents sell the holiday package purchased from different tour operators. Tour operators take care of the clients according to the package description like airport pick up, meal facilities, sightseeing, offering other travel destinations, etc.

➤ Tour operators are often specialized in one, or very few countries. But travel agents can deal with most destinations.

➤ A travel agent earns less profit, usually a small mark up or commission based on the travel they’re booking. Tour operators have the potential to earn a huge profit, as they set their own price tag.

➤ Travel agents can’t work without the help of tour operators. But tour operators can work without a travel agency being that people are now more likely to contact tour operators directly for a holiday package.

➤ There are different kinds of training programs available to start a travel agency. In comparison, the tour operator requires proper business management skills.

Testimonial

KATHERINE MOTLAGH 28 SEP 2023 – Dallas

We booked a luxury tour of Turkey with Romos Travel. The service and responsiveness from this travel agency were outstanding.

The vacation was well organized and exceeded our expectations. The team went out of their way to accommodate our requests and attended to every detail.

The hotel accommodations were great, specifically the Gamirasu Cave hotel, followed by fantastic activities such as balloon ride, and Turkish bath in addition to many site visits along the way.

Our visits were paired with authentic food and restaurants recommendations and reservations as needed.

We travelled to many countries and Özçan is easily one of the best guides. He is patient, resourceful, punctual, interested in his clients and invested in their enjoyment.

Özçan shared an ocean of interesting information about sites we visited and was flexible to organize our days at our request.

The gift of personalized memory plate was a very nice final touch. It was a great trip thanks to Romos travel.

I did a proposal cruise, and the arrangement was absolutely amazing, especially the photographer who was very enthusiastic. All in all an amazing and memorable experience!

Dusan T. I went to Turkey with my parents, my brother and my sister-in-law. We went for 10 days. It was winter ❄️ at that time and the temperature varies from 2°C to 10°C (depends on which area you are, in Cappadocia the temperature can go as low to -1°C and Istanbul the temperature was around 7 to 10°C).

We had a luxury mpv 🚐 (mercedes sprinter) for transportation. The mpv was very comfy and big and they even have plug in there (to charge your phone during journey).

During the trip we visited to a lot of places (mostly historical sites) which is very interesting especially the Ataturk’s Museum ❤️ All the hotels are 5⭐️ and we really like hot spring in one of the hotels. I was an amazing experience.

We also get chance to got on the air ballon!!! The view was lit 🔥 ! We also tried hamam (turkey spa/massage). It was nice, they bath you in warm water and massage and brush off your dead skin with soap water. The show in Hodjapasha was amazing.

By far the best family vacation we ever had, that’s all we can say 😊 I would like to thank Mr Ender(our tour operator) and Mr.Ozcan (our guide). Thanks for all the experiences.

cappadocia tour

Freja A. Istanbul and Cappadocia trip was truly worth the money we spent – exceptionally well organized and catered for.

It took away all the hassle of organizing your own itinerary and the knowledge of our tour guide Semih – there wasn’t a question he couldn’t answer. He kept the group organized and went out of his way to cater to individual needs.

The driver did an exceptional job, ensuring the journey was as comfortable as possible. The hotels we stayed at were of high quality and the meals were excellent.

The trip is fast paced but not physically challenging, ideal for anyone who wants to see all the highlights of ancient Turkey. I would highly recommend Istanbul and Cappadocia Tour.

cappadocia travel

We had a great time in Turkey with Luxury Tour Turkey that kept excellent communication with us and answered any questions we had. We were lucky to meet a great group of people and have Ozcan as our guide.

A very pleasant person always ready to help and answer our questions showing great knowledge of Turkish History and culture.

Our favorite parts of the 10 days were Istanbul, the visit to the Virgin Mary House, Ephesus, Pamukkale, and the hot air balloon ride, in Cappadocia (a breath take experience).

Hotels: Celal Sultan is in a perfect location for you to explore Istanbul on your own during your free time and is in a walking distance to the Grand Bazaar, Mosques, Bosphorus, Galata Bridge, and other places.

The other hotels were amazing but Mdc Hotel in Cappadocia has the real Turkish breakfast and it was the best breakfast of all the hotels we stayed in.

Overall, the package is excellent and shows a lot about the country. Turkish People hospitality is simply amazing! You feel welcome and safe everywhere you go in Turkey. We definitely recommend a visit to Turkey!

Should I Use a Travel Agent? Our Travel Expert Says It Makes All the Difference.

The new age of travel agents know how to find deals, book off-the-beaten path adventures, and get you out of any jam. Especially if you know who to use.

I’ve always thought that planning my own trips was the most cost-effective way, but I’ve been hearing more about travel agents making a comeback and saving their clients a lot of money. What kinds of outdoor trips should I turn to a travel agent for, and are there any who specialize in working with adventurers like me?

Technically, I’m a professional traveler. As a journalist, it’s my job to research and connect with locals to get beneath the surface of a destination. So I have never really used travel agents. What could they plan better than I could?

A lot, it turns out. Over the years, I’ve gotten to know many travel specialists, and I consider them magicians. My big aha moment happened two winters ago on a trip to Iceland . A massive storm shut down internal flights for a day, causing me to miss my return flight to the U.S. Normally, I would have spent frustrating hours on hold with the airline. But because I’d paid $65 to have Ana Gloria Garcia, an air-support specialist at the travel agency EmbarkBeyond, find and book the most affordable and convenient flight option for me, she handled the rebookings while I soaked in the Blue Lagoon.

A woman soaks in Iceland’s Blue Lagoon.

During the pandemic, agents became advocates helping travelers get refunds on canceled flights and trips. As travel has come roaring back, an agent’s superpower is now their access to the best hotel rooms, most in-the-know guides, free amenities, and more, says Cory Hagopian, senior vice president of sales and partnerships for Virtuoso , a global network of travel agencies.

And they’re attracting a young clientele. According to a recent industry survey , 38 percent of millennials and Gen Zers are opting to use travel agents as opposed to booking on their own trips. That number is far greater than Gen Xers and baby boomers, of whom only 12 and 2 percent respectively use agents.

What Do I Gain from Using a Travel Agent?

I recently had a friend tell me she spent close to 40 hours researching a family trip online. She probably could have gleaned the same intel from an hourlong conversation with a travel adviser. Knowledge is priceless, and advisers act as your insiders. They know what you don’t and fill in the blanks for things you might not have considered, says Erika Richter, a spokesperson for the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA). Their firsthand knowledge, vast network, and on-the-ground connections all combine to provide a unique perspective for crafting the perfect itinerary for you.

Kayak, paddle, raft—a river trip down Costa Rica’s Pacuare is good fun. And Danielle Meyer of Coastline Travel likes to book clients in the riverfront, all-inclusive, 20-suite Pacuare Lodge. “The way to get to the property is by whitewater rafting, so you truly begin with adventure!”

Most travel advisers specialize in certain regions and countries and travel to them frequently, so they have up-to-date intel on not only the best safari camps but the perfect tent to book for the most incredible views and the best local restaurants you won’t find on Tripadvisor. They want their client’s trips to go well to keep them coming back, so it’s in their interest to have sussed out hotels and itineraries before they send you out into the world.

Nicole Forster, 29, considers herself a savvy traveler. She’s been to 20-plus countries and enjoys destination research. But when it came to planning her honeymoon in Africa, she felt overwhelmed, so she reached out to Danielle Meyer at Coastline Travel Advisors , which specializes in bespoke itineraries. “Originally, I wanted to go to South Africa, Victoria Falls, and Madagascar,” Forster recalls. “Danielle convinced me that if we wanted to relax, we should stay in South Africa and save the other countries for separate trips.”

Over five phone conversations and multiple emails, they crafted a 15-night itinerary that included Cape Town, the winelands, the Cape Peninsula, and a safari at the Thornybush Game Reserve. Forster established her budget early in the process, and Meyer sent her a variety of lodge options to choose from.

“I initially wanted to start with the safari, but she pointed out that we’d be jet-lagged and would need to wake at sunrise for game drives,” says Forster. “The safari was our highlight, so it was a perfect way to end the trip.”

A man sitting in an open-air vehicle while on safari in South Africa smiles at the camera while an elephant is just over his shoulder, approaching.

Not only did Meyer book all of the flights, hotels, and transfers, but she created a detailed, day-by-day trip app for the couple that included useful information like check-in times at hotels and how much to tip guides .

Agents also act as advocates. If something goes wrong during your travels, they’re on call 24/7 to handle it. When Forster left the battery and charger for her camera at a hotel, Meyer arranged for an on-the-ground contact to go to a camera store and buy new ones that would be delivered to her hotel the next day.

The cost for the honeymoon planning: $150 per person. “I wouldn’t use a planner for a trip to Hawaii ,” Forster says, “but if I ever took a big trip like this again, I’d 100 percent work with an expert.”

When to Consider Using a Travel Agent

For savvy trip planners, the best time to use a travel agent is for complicated international travel. It can save you hours of planning and peace of mind that if anything goes wrong in your chosen far-flung destination, there’s someone a What’sApp message away to handle it.

Domestically, I’d consider using a travel agent when planning a multi-week national park trip or multi-island trip in Hawaii. They will save you time, guarantee you get the best guides, and help you land reservations at always-booked lodges and hotels.

Dream Trips Delivered

Jessica Cook and her husband both work in the travel industry. Decision fatigued, they handed their honeymoon logistics over to the team at Askari Travel , an agency that specializes in South Africa. Their original plan was also an African safari, but just as they were about to put a deposit down, the Omicron variant of the coronavirus made headlines. Worried about getting stuck abroad, they reached out to Askari’s founder, Muriel Truter, who is from Zimbabwe, and upon her advice, changed their focus to South America.

Knowledge is priceless, and advisers act as your insiders. They know what you don’t and fill in the blanks of things you might not even have considered.

Truter suggested they stick to Colombia rather than country-hop. Cook supplied a budget and a wish list: 12 days, no more than three destinations, a barefoot-luxe feel, and adventures like horseback riding and mountain biking. The rest was a surprise that Askari pretty much nailed, with the exception of one hotel.

“Everything felt so authentic, but this one hotel on Barú island felt really fabricated and was full of American tourists,” recalls Cook. She immediately messaged the Askari team, saying, “Hey, this place really isn’t our vibe,” and within an hour they were on a water taxi headed to Blue Apple, a B Corp hotel—and an Outside pick for tropical adventures —on Tierra Bomba island. “It was honestly the best trip we’ve ever taken,” she says.

Tierra Bomba, a 15-minute boat ride from the Colombian capital of Cartagena, is an affordable Caribbean destination with a relaxed pace and soft white sands.

Are Travel Agents Expensive?

It depends. Cost varies. Some travel agencies won’t charge any fee, as they receive a commission from the bookings, while some high-end agencies will charge pricey annual membership fees for their services. Still others charge nominal “professional” fees starting at $150. Fees often fluctuate based on the length and intricacy of a trip and how far out you do the planning (6 to 12 months is recommended). You may occasionally come across agents who charge a percentage of the total trip price or hourly rates.

Basic travel enquiries are generally free. In 2016, Leah Smith, founder of Tafari Travel , opened an old-school brick-and-mortar location in Denver’s Cherry Creek neighborhood so her services would feel less intimidating to first-time users. “With our retail-office location, we’ve become part of the community, and both clients and non-clients are welcome to pop in and ask whatever questions they may have, no charge,” she says.

Matt Lindsay, founder of the surf-guiding and travel company LuxSurf Travel , builds relationships with resorts and property owners to get discounted rates that he can then pass on to guests.

Matt Lindsey of LuxeSurfTravel can arrange a surf safari on a 165-foot boat, complete with dive masters. surf guides, and a spa. Guests spend a week cruising around atolls in the Maldives seeking out perfect swell and swimming with whale sharks and manta rays.

Dominic Allan, the founder of Real Latin America , specializes in travel to Belize and Nicaragua and caters to independent travelers who are happy to book their own flights and hotels but are seeking his local intel. Allan’s three-tier pricing structure starts at $300 for up to three hours of phone calls, during which he might weigh in on where to eat (or not to), the best room to request in a certain lodge, or whether you really need a guide to hike.

”Totoro Eco-Lodge, in Nicaragua, has always been one of our favorites,” says Dominic Allen of Real Latin America. In addition to its laid-back vibe, it’s spectacuarly placed on Ometepe Island, with views out to the active Conception volcano. Allen recommends volcano hikes, rainforest excursions, tours of a chocolate farm, and sunset paddles in search of caiman.

Value Versus Savings

If you’re just looking for deals and steals, you might not be ready to work with a travel adviser, says Richter of the ASTA. “Anything you invest in with a travel adviser comes back to you in the form of amenities, customer service, peace of mind, better access to unique experiences, and handcrafted itineraries,” she says. “You could save money by cutting your own hair, too, but most people go to someone who knows what they’re doing.”

Agents work with preferred partners who can guarantee perks for clients, such as free upgrades, early check-in or late check-out, and resort credits. Those add-ons often translate into savings, says Justin Huxter, cofounder of the UK-based Cartology Travel . “We had a client go to Maui for a week, and because of our partnership with the resort, breakfast was included,” he says. When breakfast costs $120 for two, that’s a savings of $840.”

Some of the Best Travel Agents in the Adventure World

Some of my go-to resources for finding a person to work with include travel expert Wendy Perrin’s annual Wow List of tried and trusted agents, the Adventure Travel Trade Association’s adviser network , and the ASTA’s advisor directory .

In addition to the agents mentioned throughout this story, others I highly recommend for adventurous travelers include:

  • Dan Achber of Trufflepig , for Africa and the Middle East
  • Miguel Cunant of Sri Lanka in Style
  • Javier Echecopar of Journey Costa Rica
  • Daniel Fraser of Smiling Albino , for Southeast Asia
  • Elizabeth Gordon of Extraordinary Journeys , for Africa
  • Kleon Howe of the Art of Travel , for French Polynesia
  • Jay Johnson of Coastline Travel , for Hawaii and California
  • Antonello Losito of Southern Visions Travel , for Puglia, Italy
  • Rabia Malik of Fora Travel , for general worldwide travel
  • Robyn Mark of Mayamaya Travel , for Africa, the Alps, Patagonia, and Japan
  • Marisol Mosquera of Aracari , for Peru and Bolivia
  • Zach Rabinor of Journey Mexico
  • Raluca Spiac of Beyond Dracula , for Romania

The author immersed in the hot waters of Iceland’s Blue Lagoon, with mud on her face. It beats being on the phone trying to reschedule a flight cancellation.

Travel-advice columnist Jen Murphy is now a believer in using a travel agent. Thanks to their expertise and connections, she’s avoided dozens of trip catastrophes.

Understanding the difference between tour operator and travel agencies: a comprehensive guide.

  • October 15, 2023

The travel industry is a huge and complex network of companies that each play a unique role in meeting the constantly changing requirements of tourists. Travel agencies and tour operators are two major participants in this market. Despite their frequent interchangeability, they have distinct roles, duties, and effects on your trip. In order to help you make wise choices the next time you embark on a journey, this book seeks to make those distinctions clear.

Overview of the Travel Sector Environment

Prior to getting too technical, it’s important to comprehend the overall travel business scenario. It includes travel agencies, hotels, rental car agencies, tour operators, and airlines, among others. Everybody has a specialty and works together to provide passengers with a smooth experience. Although they serve different purposes, tour operators and travel companies in particular serve as a middleman between the tourist and other service providers.

What is a Tour Operator?

A tour operator is a business or a person who designs and plans package vacations. These packages often include a variety of travel-related services, such as lodging, transportation, sightseeing, and occasionally meals, into a single item. These packages are created by tour operators using their knowledge, research, and connections to other service providers.

Key Functions of a Tour Operator

1. package creation.

They create distinctive travel packages for a variety of passenger types, including families, couples, and adventure seekers.

2. Coordination with Service Providers

To deliver a seamless travel experience, tour operators communicate with lodging establishments, transportation providers, and local guides.

3. Bulk Booking

They frequently reserve services in large quantities to get lower costs that they can then pass along to the client.

4. Quality Control

Monitoring lodging, transit, and other services on a regular basis to ensure that they meet quality standards.

What is a Travel Agency?

A company that represents passengers as an agent is known as a travel agency. They handle and market travel-related goods and services, ranging from hotel reservations and airline tickets to whole vacation packages (which are occasionally obtained through tour operators).

Key Functions of a Travel Agency

1. booking services.

They assist clients in making reservations for buses, trains, airplanes, and other forms of transportation.

2. Accommodation

Travel agencies have the ability to reserve hotels, resorts, or other types of lodging for their clients.

3. Itinerary Planning

While not as comprehensive as tour packages, they can assist in organizing an itinerary according to the requirements of a visitor.

4. Providing Insurance and Other Services

A lot of organizations provide currency exchange, travel insurance, help with visas, and other services.

Key Distinctions Between Travel Agencies and Tour Operators

1. the type of service.

Travel agencies mostly offer individual services or serve as sales representatives for travel items, whereas tour operators concentrate on the entire experience by designing multi-day vacation packages.

Tour operators engage directly with service providers like hotels and airlines, operating on a greater scale. Conversely, travel agencies may have closer relationships with certain clients.

Tour operators may provide better packages because of their direct relationships and large booking volume. Although they could provide more alternatives, travel agencies might not have the same pricing advantage for packages.

4. Expertise

Tour operators may create more personalized packages since they frequently have extensive understanding of particular trip locations or itineraries. While their expertise may be more general, travel companies may not have a focus on a particular area.

Which One Is Better to Select?

Your choice between a travel agency and a tour operator primarily comes down to the type of trip you’re looking for.

  • In Search of Tailored, Stress-Free Experiences: A tour operator that specializes in these areas could be a better option if you’re searching for a more specialized experience, like a safari in Africa or hiking in the Himalayas.
  • For freedom and Variety: A travel agency can provide you the necessary freedom if you would rather plan your own itinerary and choose specific components such as hotels, airlines, and excursions.

The Development of Travel Agencies and Tour Operators

In the past, there was a clearer distinction between the functions of travel agents and tour operators. Travel agencies served as middlemen in the early stages of contemporary tourism, mainly handling bookings and ticket sales. On the other hand, tour operators arose alongside the popularity of package vacations, particularly following World War II when leisure travel took off.

However, both groups have had to adjust because to changes in passenger behavior and technology improvements. Their operations have been changed with the introduction of internet booking platforms and direct-to-consumer marketing tactics. These days, a lot of travel companies sell package packages, and tour operators offer individual services, so the roles they play are pretty much interchangeable. However, there is still a fundamental distinction between their respective roles.

The Industry’s Reaction to Digital

Travelers have access to more resources than ever before in the digital era. Travel packages, lodging, and even flights may be booked instantly using websites, applications, and online platforms. The transition to digitalization has affected travel agents as well as tour operators.

These days, tour operators may reach out to customers directly through their websites, blogs, and social media accounts. Through user feedback, virtual tours, and video material, they may highlight immersive experiences. However, through internet portals where clients can compare costs, read reviews, and personalize their vacation plans, travel companies have increased the range of services they provide.

Ecological and Conscientious Travel

The emphasis on sustainability and responsible travel is one new trend in the travel business. In order to promote and engage in sustainable tourism, both tour operators and travel agents are involved.

It is possible for tour operators to design packages that emphasize ecotourism, help out local populations, and make sure tourism doesn’t negatively impact the ecology or customs of the area. They can collaborate with eco-friendly lodging establishments, advertise low-impact events, and instruct tourists on ethical behavior.

In addition to offering bookings and information, travel firms may help guests make sustainable decisions. They may give suggestions for environmentally friendly lodging, cultural sensitivity advice, and even flying carbon offset alternatives.

The Future of Travel Agencies and Tour Operators

The importance of the human touch endures, even as consumer behavior and technology continue to transform the travel business. Personalized services, professional guidance, and a sincere concern for tourists’ experiences are things that technology and direct reservations cannot provide.

Travel agents will persist in creating distinctive, niche experiences, providing tourists with immersive expeditions tailored to particular passions. Conversely, it is probable that travel companies will adopt a more consultative role, functioning as consultants who offer suggestions grounded in their own experiences and areas of expertise.

Tour operators and travel agencies play a vital role in providing everyone with hassle-free, engaging, and unforgettable travel experiences, regardless of how the travel industry changes.

Sometimes it’s difficult to distinguish between tour operators and travel agencies, especially since so many companies provide a combination of the two services. Nonetheless, being aware of their main distinctions and advantages can help you select the best traveling companion. Knowing each company’s responsibilities will make the trip go more smoothly and pleasurable, whether it’s through the flexible services of a travel agency or the all-inclusive care of a tour operator. Travel safely!

Life as a Remote Travel Agent: Fora’s Guide

Fora Author Fora Travel

The Modern Travel Agency

Fora Travel

https://www.foratravel.com/the-journal/remote-travel-agent

Considering a career as a remote travel agent? We have all the details for you, from how remote travel advisors compare to in-person roles, to what the average day looks like.

Already know what you’re signing up for? Apply to become a Fora Advisor today.

What does a remote travel agent do?

Nowadays, remote travel agents do just about everything in-person travel agents do, except everything they do is remote (no surprises here).

Need to start from the beginning? Here’s exactly what a travel agent does .

Is a remote travel agent the same as a virtual travel agent? What services are offered by virtual travel agencies?

The two are one and the same. The only difference between a remote travel agent and a virtual travel agent is the title, which often comes down to personal preference.

If you want a full breakdown of the different terms that travel advisors use, check out our guide to travel advisor versus travel consultant jobs .

Are remote travel agents in demand?

Every day, more and more travelers are seeking the services of travel advisors over online travel agencies like Expedia and Travelocity. Coupled with an exponential rise in travel over the past few years, remote travel agents are indeed still in demand.

What does a typical day look like as a remote travel agent?

It’s hard to accurately define a “typical day" as a remote travel agent because every professional has a different schedule and process.

However, most travel agents split their time between three major tasks: self-marketing, working with clients and research. At the same time, there’s not really a right way to divvy up each task — the cool thing about being a remote travel agent is that you get to decide what works best for you.

Self-marketing: earning new clients

As an independent travel agent , you’ll generally be responsible for promoting your business. Marketing is a huge part of any travel advisor business, remote or otherwise. Without it, no one will know who you are or what you do.

The most successful remote travel agents typically boast a notable social media presence, run email campaigns and take advantage of other marketing tools. That’s usually in addition to serving their existing professional and social networks (i.e., friends, family, peers).

If this sounds intimidating, don’t worry. If you sign up to become a Fora Advisor, our membership includes a wealth of travel agent training specifically meant to teach you how to market your travel business like a pro . Even better, we provide tons of marketing tools — from social media templates to your own landing page — to boost your business.

Working with clients: booking trips, planning itineraries & more

Helping clients figure out where to stay in Tokyo , planning trips to the best places to visit in Spain for first timers , booking the coolest hotels in Vegas …this is the fun part. Once you have a few clients in rotation, you’ll find that a good portion of your time as a remote travel agent is made up of planning and booking reservations.

Not so coincidentally, this is another area where Fora offers a ton of help. Our proprietary booking platform allows Fora Advisors to make reservations at nearly 30,000 hotels globally, dramatically cutting down booking times. Plus, of those hotels, almost 5,000 and counting are preferred partners , where advisors can score their clients awesome perks.

Research & networking: improving your business across the board

Finally, the best remote travel agents devote a portion of their time to improving both their services and travel knowledge. This could be finding ways to improve their marketing efforts — like learning how to build a sales funnel within a travel context — working on supplier partnerships (e.g., hotels, tour operators, etc.) or simply researching destinations to craft better itineraries.

Fora delivers here, too. All Fora Advisors can access Forum, our in-house community platform that allows travel advisors to ask questions — no matter how small — and share knowledge, tips and deals. It’s an inclusive environment that’s built around collaboration (rather than competition), and the wealth of material that exists within Forum is staggering.

Remote travel agent FAQs

Have more questions about remote travel agents? We have answers.

How exactly does remote travel planning work?

Just like in-person travel planning, except it’s usually done over a computer or phone. The exact methods are often left up to the advisor and client, but emails and calls (either via Zoom or over the phone) are typical. Likewise, communication between the travel advisor and supplier takes place remotely.

Just as remote travel agents are happy to be able to work from anywhere, the same can be said for clients. Think of it from their perspective: would you rather travel to a brick-and-mortar office or work with an agent from anywhere in the world?

Is it worth it to become a remote travel agent?

Is being a travel agent worth it ? We sure think so. Of all the jobs in the travel industry , travel planning offers the most flexibility. There’s virtually no earnings cap. And your whole job is centered on making people happy (who doesn’t love to travel?).

As far as being remote, it’s hard to complain about being able to work anywhere that has an internet connection.

(Still unsure about becoming a remote travel agent? Hear 8 reasons to become a Fora Advisor , straight from the source.)

Do you have to work full time or can you sell travel as a side gig? Is this a good career path?

As far as careers in travel and tourism go, becoming a remote travel agent is a pretty sweet deal. Some travel agencies do require full-time commitments, but we prefer flexibility. At Fora, you can plan trips as a travel side hustle , travel agent career or anything in between. It’s totally up to you.

Intrigued? Sign up to become a Fora Advisor today.

Do remote travel agents make good money? Can you earn a living?

It takes patience and dedication, but yes, remote travel agents can make very good money (see our guide to how much travel agents make for specifics). Our top earners make six figures, and the average Fora Advisor still makes enough to be comfortable (looking for the best remote jobs for moms , perhaps?). It’s also worth noting that many Fora Advisors pursue travel planning as a side gig, which we also fully support.

What’s the typical salary of a remote travel agent?

The typical Fora travel advisor salary varies. Again, many Fora Advisors choose to work part time, but many still earn covetable income. The more you book, the more you earn.

Are there different types of remote travel agents?

There are indeed different niches and travel agent jobs out there, including Disney travel agents , luxury travel advisors and corporate travel agents .

Some remote travel agents also specialize in booking travel to specific destinations, such as the best places to visit in Hawai‘i .

(P.S. Love the idea of catering to a high-end clientele? Learn how to become a luxury travel agent .)

Is being a remote travel agent stressful?

Working as a remote travel agent can be overwhelming at first, but advisors who stick with the profession will tell you that the pros far outweigh the cons. We offer plenty of travel agent training and tips for how to be a successful travel advisor to get you through the tough parts. But as a Fora Advisor, you get to determine your own schedule, and can work as much or as little as you'd like. Over time, many find that managing the different aspects of being a remote travel agent is quite enjoyable.
