Travel + Leisure / Jessica Juliao

Since a laptop usually comes at a high price, it’s well worth it to invest in a backpack designed to protect your technology when you’re on the go. Whether you’re traveling on an airplane or trekking through campus, a comfortable, well-made backpack with a padded laptop pocket is a must-have.

Because comfort and durability are arguably the two most important factors when investing, we tested more than 50 laptop backpacks on several occasions in our New York City lab and in the real world to find the best ones for everyday wear with these considerations in mind. We packed each bag with computers, iPads, sweatshirts, and more, and carried them around to see how they felt. We then tossed each one onto the ground from a tabletop to test the bag’s durability (using dummy laptops, of course). Keep reading to learn more about our top picks for style, comfort, value, and more.

Best Overall

Solo re:define backpack.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5

The bag looks and feels compact but has a surprisingly large interior.

One of the zippers is fraying after four months of use.

Looking for a commuter backpack to take with you to the office and beyond? Solo’s Re:Define Backpack is equipped with everything a traveler or commuter needs for long days away from home. At first glance, the bag looks like a normal-sized backpack but it has a deceptively large interior with plenty of pockets to store both big and small items. The 15.6-inch laptop pocket in the back is fully padded and the bag also has an external USB port and a headphone port for traveling seamlessly with electronic devices. Even when we had the bag packed full of accessories and clothing, it felt nearly weightless and exceptionally comfortable to carry thanks to the padded and adjustable shoulder straps.

Made with recycled polyester, the backpack performed perfectly during our durability tests and didn’t sustain any scuffs or scratches after we tossed it onto the ground several times. All of the contents packed appeared to be in their original condition, so we feel confident in this backpack’s protective abilities. The zippers also impressed us by being super smooth even when the bag was packed to the brim. While it’s not the most stylish backpack on the market, its functional and simple design makes it well worth it — a great option for anyone looking for a durable backpack .

Best Leather

Bee & kin the midi nomad backpack.

Bee & Kin

  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Comfort 4.5 /5
  • Durability 4.8 /5
  • Value 4.8 /5

The sleek leather material looks nicer than a typical nylon backpack.

The straps are a bit too long, even when they are adjusted to the shortest setting.

Constructed with soft and sleek Italian leather, this mid-size backpack has the perfect combination of style and functionality. It’s big enough to fit a laptop up to 13 inches long, but it’s small enough that you can use it beyond traveling or commuting for everyday activities like running errands. After four months of use, we found this to be the perfect medium-size bag that is easy to clean, making it a perfect option for everyday use. It can easily fit a laptop, water bottle, wallet, notebook, and headphones with plenty of room left over. While we love the size for versatility, it still has plenty of thoughtful features for travelers like a pocket for a wireless charger ( sold separately ) and several interior pockets for storing accessories.

The leather material has a soft and plush feel to it which makes carrying the bag comfortable, but we wish the straps were a little shorter since the bag sits a little low on the back. Since the backpack is smaller and lightweight, this isn’t a huge issue and we still think the high-quality backpack is worth it for traveling, commuting, and everyday use.

The Details: 13 x 11.6 x 5.5 inches | 2.6 pounds | Leather | 13-inch laptop pocket

Best Convertible

Aer flight pack 3.

  • Value 4.5 /5

You can wear this either as a backpack or a duffel bag.

The laptop sleeve is just a slip pocket in the main compartment.

We love that you can choose to wear the Aer Flight Pack 3 as a daily commuter’s backpack or convert it into a duffel bag or briefcase for a business trip or weekend getaway. There are plenty of pockets for organization with a designated laptop sleeve in the main compartment, another compartment with more than seven smaller pockets, and a small zippered pouch in the front. The laptop sleeve is only a slip pocket, and while it kept the laptop in place during our durability test, it isn’t as secure as it could be if it was a zippered pocket. We also found that there's a lot of space for clothes and tech devices for a quick weekend getaway or business trip. Because the pack is made with abrasion- and tear-resistant ballistic nylon, it feels sturdy and durable, sustaining no damage after we dropped it off a tabletop. Plus, we found the backpack, top handle, and duffel straps equally comfortable when carrying the bag in all three ways.

The Details: 18 x 12 x 5.5 inches | 20 liters | 3.4 pounds | Cordura ballistic nylon | 16-inch laptop pocket

Best Padding

Incase icon backpack.

  • Design 4 /5
  • Value 4.3 /5

The backpack is outfitted with thick padding.

It doesn’t have a water bottle pocket or trolley sleeve.

The Incase Icon Pack thoroughly impressed us with very thick padding throughout the backpack which adds an abundance of protection and comfort. The back has a padded laptop sleeve that was noticeably thick when we first opened up the backpack. When we dropped the bag onto the floor to test for durability, none of the contents were damaged. The thick padding in the back and on the straps provides comfort while wearing the pack, and we love that the adjustable strap is lined with a soft fabric. Although we wish this backpack came with more features like a water bottle holder or a trolley sleeve, the pack has two spacious compartments, a front pocket, and a variety of smaller pockets for exceptional organization on the inside, making it well worth the investment for the comfortable, durable backpack.

The Details: 19 x 13 x 9 inches | 20 liters | 2.7 pounds | 840D nylon | 15-inch laptop pocket

Best Expandable

Samsonite elevation plus backpack.

  • Organization 5 /5
  • Portability 5 /5

The expandable zippers add tons of extra space.

It's not the most stylish backpack.

I've tested dozens of backpacks and it can be hard to find a backpack that stands out from others, which is why I'm a big fan of this one from Samsonite, which I personally tested in the lab. While it has a simple design from the outside, the backpack is filled with special features that make it better than your average backpack. It has tons of pockets to store every travel essential you could ever need, including laptops, tablets, notebooks, chargers, passports, and it has a water bottle pocket on the side that keeps a bottle secure (it didn't even fall out when I threw the pack off a table several times). However, my favorite part of the pack is the expandable zipper that adds 1.5 inches of extra space, which came in handy when I packed the bag with an extra jacket. Plus, it fits underneath an airplane seat with ease, and there's extra padding in the back paneling and shoulder straps for superior comfort while traveling.

The Details: 17.8 x 12 x 6.5 inches | 22.75 liters | 2.2 pounds | Recycled polyester | Expandable

Best Solar-powered

Solgaard lifepack backpack.

  • Comfort 4 /5

It’s made out of recycled plastic bottles found on beaches and has a built-in, solar-powered USB charger.

The capacity is smaller than other backpacks we tested.

While this backpack impressed us during testing, it also won us over thanks to Solgaard’s sustainability mission in which all of its products are made with ocean-bound recycled materials. The brand uses its patented Shore-tex material to create this backpack with recycled plastic water bottles found on beaches or river banks. In addition, the backpack includes a solar-powered USB charging port so you can charge on the go without having to worry about the life of your power bank. In our testing lab, we were able to fit all of the items on our packing list, including a sweatshirt, a laptop, an iPad, a notebook, and a water bottle, but there wasn’t a lot of space left over. The laptop sleeve is in the back of the bag, and although it’s just a slip pocket, it wasn’t damaged during our durability tests. When it comes to padding, the backpack is outfitted with ample cushioning that makes it comfortable to wear with the adjustable, supportive chest strap, too.

The Details: 12.4 x 6.9 x 19 inches | 19 liters | 4.85 Pounds | Anti-theft lock | USB port

Best Splurge

Lo & sons rowledge.

Lo & Sons

The nylon material and leather accents give the backpack a sleek look without sacrificing protection.

The laptop compartment is too small for any computers over 13 inches long.

Lo & Sons’ The Rowledge laptop backpack is one of the most expensive bags we tested, but it seriously delivered in performance. The nylon exterior outfitted with leather accents makes this sleek, timeless bag a dream for travelers and office-goers. While it may small from the outside, we found that it was possible to fit a sweatshirt, a laptop, an iPad, a notebook, and a water bottle with ease. Our only gripe is that the laptop pocket can only fit laptops that are 13 inches or smaller, so you'll want to consider that if you own a larger computer. The adjustable straps and ample padding throughout the entire backpack add to the comfort and durability of the pack. Although the bag felt a little stiff at first, the material quickly contours to the shape of your shoulders and back over time for a more comfortable fit after a few wears. After tossing the bag off of a tabletop, the laptop remained unharmed in the designated sleeve in the back of the bag, and the exterior showed no signs of damage, so we think this sturdy, well-made backpack is worth the splurge.

The Details: 16.5 x 11.5 x 6.75 inches | 21 liters | 3.2 pounds | Nylon, leather | 13.5-inch laptop pocket

Best Budget

Tzowla travel laptop backpack.

  • Capacity 4.8 /5
  • Comfort 4.8 /5
  • Durability 4.5 /5

The bag has lots of smart features for travelers.

The materials feel lower in quality.

This wallet-friendly backpack exceeded expectations during testing due to all of the thoughtful designs that rivaled the most expensive bags we tested. After four months of regularly using the bag, we especially love the padded laptop sleeve that protects laptops up to 15.6 inches long. The backpack has a variety of other smart features including a USB port, a passcode lock, and a headphone port to make traveling with electronics a breeze. We found that the main compartment is very spacious and easy to pack with bulkier items like a jacket or lunchbox, and the front compartment has tons of little pockets for organizing smaller items.

Made with polyester fabric, the backpack feels fairly durable and didn’t get damaged during our durability tests, but it is noticeably lower quality than the other bags we tested with a higher price point. However, the straps have comfortable padding and adjustable buckles, so the bag is still very comfortable to carry.

The Details: 18.5 x 11.8 x 5.5 inches | 34 liters | 1.83 pounds | Polyester blend | 15.6-inch laptop pocket | USB and headphone port | Password lock

Best Organization

Timbuk2 authority laptop backpack deluxe.

  • Capacity 4.5 /5

It has plenty of pockets for organizing all of your belongings efficiently.

The capacity could have been bigger.

The Timbuk2 Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe has a variety of interior and exterior pockets to help you stay organized on the go. There’s a designated spot for all of your must-haves with a padded laptop pocket in the back, a main compartment with slip and zippered pockets, and a spacious front pocket for items like a notebook. Plus, there’s a side slip pocket for your water bottle and a trolley sleeve for attaching the pack to a suitcase. We love the ability to access your laptop from the back zipper or through the main compartment of the backpack. Additionally, we appreciated the sleek pack’s compression straps so you can adjust the capacity of the bag, but we still thought the main compartment could have been a bit larger. The padded backpack straps are comfortable to wear for long periods of time, and if you live in a rainy climate, the durable recycled nylon exterior is also water-resistant.

The Details: 18.9 x 11.42 x 5.31 inches | 20 liters | 2.51 pounds | Recycled nylon | 17-inch laptop pocket

Most Versatile

Monos metro backpack.

The front pocket comes off so you can travel with or without the extra space.

The original model has visible snaps when the front pocket is removed, but that's been updated with the newer version.

The Monos Metro Backpack has a removable front pocket that adds quite a bit of extra space which is a game-changer for traveling. For other times when you may not need the excess room, all you have to do is pull the discrete cord in the back of the pouch to release pouch and take it off. Best of all, when you remove the pouch, the backpack still looks sleek, and it doesn't look like any part of the bag is missing thanks to the brand's modular system for taking on and off the pouch.

We love the soft vegan leather look of the backpack and found the materials to provide protection against laptop damage when we dropped it. There are several pockets inside the main compartment, and the laptop pocket is in the back, separated from the rest of the bag. Whether you're traveling on an airplane or heading into the office, this stylish bag is ideal for those looking for a versatile backpack. It also comes in nylon fabric with more colors to choose from.

The Details: 11.5 × 16.5 × 6 inches | 18 liters | 3 pounds | Vegan leather or nylon | 15-inch laptop pocket

Everlane ReNew Transit Backpack

  • Design 4.6 /5
  • Capacity 4.2 /5
  • Durability 4 /5
  • Comfort 4.6 /5

This lightweight backpack has a sleek, contemporary design that comes in several earthy colors.

It has a smaller capacity than many backpacks and can only fit a day or two of clothes.

If you’re looking to travel in style with a great carry-on backpack , Everlane’s The ReNew Transit Backpack is the perfect fit. Functional and contemporary, we found it to best suited for day outings because of its smaller capacity. The bag fit all of the packing items during testing, but it would be difficult to fit much more in the main compartment. The ReNew Transit was also comfortable to wear thanks to its lightweight polyester material and compact build. The front flap of the backpack has an external pocket for smaller items, and it folds over to attach magnetically to the front of the backpack.

During our durability tests, the front magnets stayed securely together, and the body of the backpack didn’t get crushed or damaged after we threw it off a table multiple times. We liked how it can fit under an airplane seat, making it a versatile backpack when traveling, too. The laptop sleeve keeps a computer safe, and there's also a water bottle holder on the side and an additional front zippered pocket below the folding magnetic lock. With five earthy tones to choose from, this is a bag to fit all travel style preferences.

The Details: 12 x 17.5 x 7.25 inches | 27 liters | Recycled polyester | 15-inch laptop pocket

Bagsmart Bonchemin Laptop Backpack

The high-quality material and functional design is similar to pricier bags we tried.

You have to clip the laptop pocket with the provided carabiners otherwise the bag will open and your laptop will drop.

Rivaling higher-priced backpacks we tried, this option from Bagsmart proves that you don’t have to sacrifice quality for a lower price, so we dubbed it the best backpack for its high value. During our tests, we found that this bag is spacious enough to fit a laptop, an iPad, a notebook, and a sweatshirt with plenty of room left over to add more. The backpack is made with a cushioned polyester fabric and foam padded straps that had us raving about comfort when wearing. However, because the bag is made out of fabric, it may get dirtier than a nylon pack, but it didn’t show any signs of damage during our durability tests.

With four separate zippered compartments and more than 10 interior pockets, travelers will also appreciate the variety of spots to organize everything. The pack also has anti-theft zippers, a USB charging port, a side water bottle pocket, and a trolley sleeve, making this one of the best-designed laptop backpacks we tried.

The Details: 18.5 x 12.5 x 7 inches | 40 liters | 1.5 pounds | Polyester | 15.6-inch laptop pocket | USB port

Best for Photographers

Peak design everyday backpack.

It comes with Velcro separators for added protection for camera or video gear.

The magnetic top opening has a slight learning curve to open the backpack easily.

The Peak Design Everyday Backpack will give you peace of mind when it comes to protecting your camera or video equipment while traveling. Its structured design adds extra protection, and the backpack comes with four stiff Velcro separators to further protect fragile technology. Plus, the padded laptop sleeve in the back will ensure that your laptop travels safely. The icing on the cake of this backpack is how lightweight it feels to wear, especially for long periods of time. The weatherproof nylon exterior didn’t scuff or get scratched when we threw the backpack onto the floor, and best of all, the laptop and iPad remained unharmed. Since the bag is designed for photographers, it comes with three separators that you can fasten to the side of the backpack to protect and organize camera gear. The magnetic top latch was slightly finicky to open at first, but once done, it gets easier to use.

The Details: 24.5 x 14.2 x 7.8 inches | 30 liters | 4.1 pounds | Recycled nylon, polyester | 15-inch laptop pocket | Fits DSLR cameras

Best for Students

Fjällräven räven 28.

  • Durability 4.3 /5

The backpack is comfortable and breathable to wear while walking.

The polyester blend wasn’t as durable as we hoped.

For students walking across campus or between classes, the Fjällräven Räven 28 Backpack is the best option. We love how breathable the back padding is and that it provides plenty of cushioning and support when it's on. The design itself is not bulky, so we weren't worried about brushing up against other people while walking through crowded places during our real-world test. Plus, there are tons of pockets in the main compartment for classroom essentials, and each side of the backpack has a water bottle slip pocket.

We did notice that this bag easily collects dust or lint after it is tossed on the ground. Despite the slight dirtiness of the fabric, we found that the backpack does an excellent job of protecting a laptop in the designated padded sleeve in the back. It's not difficult to fit varying needs, even after using it on a daily commute for two months, and we found it battled the elements well, keeping a computer untouched by rain, too.

The Details: 18.5 x 14 x 6.1 inches | 28 liters | Polyester and cotton with wax coating | 15-inch laptop pocket

Best Sustainable

Troubadour orbis 1-pocket backpack.

  • Design 4.3 /5

It’s made with 100 percent recycled materials that can be fully recycled if the bag can no longer be used.

The main zipper has a fabric trim over it that makes it difficult to open and close the bag.

This backpack from Troubadour is one of the most unique backpacks we’ve ever tested. Not only is the bag made with 100 percent recycled fabric but when it’s no longer able to be used, it can actually be recycled instead of going into a landfill. While we’re big fans of the sustainability of the bag, it’s also extremely comfortable to wear and looks very sleek from the outside.

The back panel and shoulder straps have lifejacket-level padding so you’ll be plenty comfortable wearing the bag for long periods of time. Your laptop will be thoroughly protected thanks to the cushioned pocket in the back — a distinguishing feature of a good laptop bag . There's an ideal amount of small and medium pockets sprinkled throughout the interior and exterior so it’s easy to pack a sweatshirt, book, phone charger, keys, and more for a trip. The design and materials of the bag feel exceptionally durable, and it still looks new after four months of regular use. The only issue we ran into was with the zipper being slightly difficult to find because of the fabric hood that covers the main zipper.

The Details: 16.5 x 11.8 x 5.5 inches | 17.6 liters | 3.3 pounds | Recycled polyester | 16-inch laptop pocket

Béis The Backpack

  • Design 4.8 /5

It has a simple, no-frills design for extra versatility.

It may be too large for every-day use.

We love the simple design of the Béis backpack and found that it’s packed full of thoughtful features making it the perfect backpack for travelers , students, and commuters alike. We were impressed with the large capacity of the main compartment that could easily fit all of the items on our packing list, including tech items like a laptop and iPad on the inside and a water bottle in one of the two slip pockets on the sides. The main compartment has several smaller pockets and a designated padded laptop sleeve. After we did our drop test to evaluate the durability, the padding did a good job of protecting the laptop, but there isn’t padding at the bottom of the bag which had us questioning how much protection the backpack offers. Even when it was completely packed, the padded straps were comfortable to wear, and the back had more padding for added comfort.

The Details: 19 x 13 x 5.5 inches | 22 liters | 1.8 pounds | Cotton, PVC, polyester | 14.5-inch laptop pocket

Other Laptop Backpacks We Liked

Here are some other backpacks we've tested that are worth mentioning, all of which we liked for various reasons but found some slight issues with.

Away The Everywhere Zip Backpack : The design is sleek and functional, but we think there isn’t enough padding for comfort or laptop protection if the bag is handled roughly.

Samsonite Classic Leather Slim Backpack : The slim design is sleek and professional without sacrificing capacity, but the outer material did scuff a bit during our durability tests.

Vohler Laptop Backpack With Charger : This pack was a serious contender for the best budget bag thanks to its sturdy build and protective padding, but our above pick had a few more standout features than this one.

Swissgear Travel Gear 1900 Scansmart TSA Laptop Backpack : Ideal for students, travelers, or commuters, we loved that this bag is durable and has plenty of storage solutions, but it wasn’t as comfortable as we hoped.

Between several different lab testing occasions, we tested more than 50 laptop backpacks from highly rated brands like The North Face, Away, Samsonite, Swissgear, and more. We evaluated each pack on a rating scale of one to five based on capacity, design, comfort, and durability.

First, to test for capacity, we used a packing list to fill the bag with a laptop, an iPad, a sweatshirt, a water bottle, a notebook, and a toiletry bag. Backpacks scoring a five for capacity were able to fit all of the packing items and provided an appropriate amount of organization solutions for the laptop, as well as the other items both big and small. During the packing process, we evaluated the design of each bag, and our top picks for the design category had plenty of padding around the laptop pocket, a variety of helpful pockets, and handles or straps that made carrying the backpack effortless and intuitive.

Then, we put on the backpacks and walked around for at least ten minutes to get a feel for the bag. We looked out for any pain caused by shoulder or sternum straps, pinching, or any other type of discomfort. The best bags for comfort were outfitted with padding in the back and straps and didn’t cause any awkwardness or irritation from the pack. To test for durability, we pushed the backpacks off of a tabletop and checked the interior contents and exterior for any scuff marks, scratches, or damage. The backpacks also went out for four months of long-term testing in the real world so we could monitor the quality and functionality to ultimately decide which products tested best .

As we continue to test more backpacks, we will update this article with our findings.

Tips for Buying a Laptop Backpack

Check the laptop sleeve size.

Most laptops measure anywhere from 10 to 17 inches in length, so it’s important to double-check the dimensions of the laptop sleeve to ensure it fits in the designated pocket. Usually, you can find the laptop length capacity of a backpack in the “specification” description of the bag.

Padding is key for protection and comfort

The more padding around the laptop, the better protected it will be if that bag is handled roughly . Since the laptop pocket or sleeve is usually in the back of the bag, there should be padding in the back to add comfort while wearing the backpack. Also, be on the lookout for additional padding on the straps to make the bag even more comfortable to wear.

Frequently Asked Questions

During our tests, we placed the laptop directly into the pocket without a case on it and found that the top-performing bags had enough padding to protect the laptop from getting damaged. However, if you feel more comfortable slipping it into a laptop case and placing it in the backpack, feel free to do so.

Laptops often measure anywhere from 13 to 17 inches, which is the diagonal measurement of the screen. To get the right measurement, take a tape measure and place it from one screen corner to the opposite diagonally to get the right measurement. Most laptop pockets will say what dimensions the space will fit so be sure to double-check your laptop size to get the right backpack.

It always depends on the airline you fly and the luggage restrictions that come with your ticket, but generally, a backpack can be a personal item on a flight in addition to a carry-on. However, if your laptop backpack is too large to fit underneath the seat in front of you, it could potentially count as a carry-on instead, so it's important to check with your airline ahead of time.

The Best Laptop Backpacks

Zoe Vanderweide

By Zoe Vanderweide

Zoe Vanderweide is a writer focused on style and accessories. She has personally tested nearly 300 bags, jeans, bras, shoes, and more.

A backpack is our favorite way to carry and protect a laptop and other necessities on a commute. It’s more ergonomic than a tote or messenger bag, it holds more than a briefcase, and it looks more stylish than a rolling bag.

Since 2015, we’ve tested more than 75 backpacks on buses, trains, cars, bikes, and planes. The following five are the best we’ve found: a tailored professional bag , a tough pack that fits a ton of tech , a sleek traveling companion , a stylish and budget-friendly option , and an ergonomic office-to-gym workhorse .

The Troubadour Apex 3.0 Backpack in Obsidian Green.

The picks and the research

A structured, polished-looking bag: troubadour apex 3.0 backpack, a rugged backpack for wrangling tech: timbuk2 authority laptop backpack deluxe, a sleek office-to-airport travel pack: july carry all backpack series 2, a well-priced bag that’s functional and stylish: everlane the renew transit backpack, a large, ergonomic gym backpack: aer duffel pack 3, other good laptop backpacks, how we picked and tested, the competition.

If you prefer a more-polished-looking backpack—think modern-briefcase vibes—the Troubadour Apex 3.0 Backpack is a terrific choice. It’s smart enough for the boardroom, yet it still offers all the convenience and comfort of a backpack.

Note: This is a newer and slightly redesigned version of our previous pick, the Troubadour Apex Backpack, which is no longer available. The Apex 3.0 is now made from 90% recycled materials, and it has a comfier, bonded neoprene top handle. It also includes a hidden pocket on the left shoulder strap. After testing the Apex 3.0, we confirmed that, like its predecessor, it is worthy of being a pick.

It’s elegant and beautifully made. The Apex is our most expensive pick, but its style and quality justify its hefty price tag. The backpack’s substantial, recycled polyester body is both durable and refined, and vegan-leather trims add extra polish. It has a tailored, softly geometric shape that remains streamlined when full, and it doesn’t collapse when empty.

The sturdily-crafted Apex keeps your cargo safe in inclement weather. Its body is coated with a fluorocarbon-free waterproofing treatment, and the smoothly operating zippers are set in a waterproof tape for additional protection.

It’s surprisingly ergonomic. Plush, ventilated back panels and contoured memory-foam shoulder straps—unusual in such an elegant, non-technical-looking backpack—make the Apex a pleasure to carry. The padding feels soft and luxurious, even with heavier loads.

The flexible top handle is lined with neoprene on its underside, so the bag is comfortable to carry by hand—a particularly nice feature for commuters on crowded buses or trains. And a luggage pass-through sleeve does a great job of stabilizing the bag on the handle of a rolling suitcase.

When the Apex isn’t very full, however, its substantial structure and padding can make it feel, in the words of one tester, “like a lot of backpack.”

A look at the upper half of the Troubadour Apex 3.0 Backpack.

It’s thoughtfully organized, inside and out. The backpack’s main compartment is roomy enough to fit larger items, and it includes an organizer panel with several slip pockets, zip pouches, and pen holders. Sitting closest to your back, the 17-inch laptop compartment is comfortably padded and has an extra sleeve for stashing a tablet. On the bag’s exterior, a deep-but-flat front-zip pocket and two spacious water-bottle pockets offer accessible storage.

An expandable pocket, tucked into the left shoulder strap, is designed for items you’ll want to grab quickly, such as a wallet, phone, or ID badge. In practice, we didn’t find it all that functional; it’s uncomfortable to stash an iPhone right against your shoulder, and when the pocket is expanded, the bag looks less sleek. This pocket is one of the new features that Troubadour added to the Apex for the updated 3.0 model, and though we don’t think it provides much function, you don’t have to use it if you don’t like it, and it’s otherwise harmless.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • This backpack’s structure, padding, and size can make it feel bulky, especially if you’re not carrying much.
  • The bag has a zippered pocket on its left strap for stashing go-to items, like a phone, but its placement isn’t very comfortable for carrying a phone (or any other rigid, rectangular object).

Dimensions: 19 by 12.5 by 6 inches Weight: 2.2 pounds Capacity: 25 liters Maximum laptop size: 17 inches Warranty: Troubadour guarantees its products for five years against manufacturing faults.

The Timbuk2 Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe.

Timbuk2 Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe

Holds tons of tech, takes tons of abuse.

This tough backpack can accommodate and organize lots of tech—we fit a laptop, keyboard, tablet, and handheld gaming device in it all at once, with room to spare. But its aesthetic may be too utilitarian for some.

When you’re toting a ton of tech, keeping it all organized and safe is probably high on your list of priorities. The Timbuk2 Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe capably contains and protects valuable cargo, and it will last you a long time. Plus, it has plenty of ergonomic and comfort features to help lighten your load.

It fits an impressive amount of gear into a slim profile. Although this 20-liter Timbuk2 bag feels compact, it can pack in plenty of tech. In our testing, we used it to carry a 13-inch laptop and its charger, a keyboard , a tablet , two power banks, a Nintendo Switch Lite and its charger, various cables, a cable stable full of accessories, a planner , a notepad , keys, and a travel mug , with room to spare.

When you have less to haul, compression straps at the lower front of the bag allow you to cinch the pack down—a major plus on crowded buses and trains. But some of our testers disliked the look of the prominent metal buckles.

It’s loaded with compartments and pockets. The Authority Deluxe’s front section is a paradise of pockets, with a stretchy mesh zippered pouch, pen holders, and two plush-lined tech compartments. Sitting just behind that section is a roomy main compartment with a nicely padded sleeve. Closest to the back, the well-padded laptop compartment—the largest among all of our picks—can fit computers up to 17 inches. Finally, two exterior front zip pockets fit quick-grab items, and a flexible side pocket snugly accommodates a 24-ounce bottle.

It’s tough. This Timbuk2 backpack’s durable recycled-nylon exterior guards against bumps and bruises, while its ample padding and waterproof boot (the bottom portion of the bag) add extra peace of mind when you’re transporting precious tech. Plus, Timbuk2 backs the Authority Deluxe with a lifetime warranty.

A laptop popping out of the top of a Timbuk2 Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe.

It’s well padded for all-day comfort. Testers found the Authority Deluxe comfortable and easy to carry thanks to the plush, breathable padding on its back panel and shoulder straps. When you’re lugging heavier gear, the adjustable-height sternum strap helps to distribute the load evenly and keep the pack secure.

  • The utilitarian aesthetic won’t appeal to everyone.
  • Although this Timbuk2 pack is tough and protective overall, it does not have a suspended laptop compartment (like our pick from Aer ).
  • It offers only one water-bottle holder (on the right side, when worn), which can make for an uneven distribution of weight.

Dimensions: 18.9 by 11.8 by 5.1 inches Weight: 2.6 pounds Capacity: 20 liters Maximum laptop size: 17 inches Warranty: Timbuk2’s lifetime warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship. It does not cover damages resulting from normal wear and tear or strictly cosmetic issues.

The July Carry All Backpack Series 2.

July Carry All Backpack Series 2

Sleek voyager.

This backpack is loaded with traveler-friendly features, including a sturdy luggage sleeve and passport pocket. Leather accents and gunmetal hardware elevate its simple silhouette, but the thick material can feel a little warm in hot climates.

Whether you’re racing to the office or to an airport gate, the July Carry All Backpack Series 2 is a trusty travel companion. It looks just as luxe and put-together as a structured tote, yet it offers the comfort and functionality of a backpack—with some especially thoughtful features thrown in to help make getting from A to B a little easier.

It’s a chic take on a classic shape. The Carry All has a simple, structured silhouette made from a sleek nylon-twill material. The bag’s leather-wrapped carry handle and zipper pulls, as well as its gleaming gunmetal hardware, add polish to the otherwise pared-down exterior.

It’s ideal for travel. The Carry All’s freestanding shape and sturdy luggage sleeve make it a great travel accessory—among our picks, this bag and the Troubadour Apex 3.0 fit the most securely on the handle of a rolling suitcase. Its hidden passport pocket, tucked beneath the top carry handle, is a nice extra.

And since globetrotting often comes with surprises, it’s reassuring to know that this bag’s exterior is sturdy, protective, and water resistant—something to which we can personally attest after getting caught in cats-and-dogs rain.

Its pockets are especially useful—delightful, even. The Carry All’s boxy main compartment has a tablet sleeve and a sleek zippered pouch. Against the back of the pack, you’ll find a top-zip laptop compartment for computers up to 16 inches, while a roomy quick-access front pocket provides a place to stash smaller items.

But the feature that tickled us the most is the Carry All’s fully enclosed, zippered water-bottle pocket, located on the left side of the pack (when worn). The clever design—which allows you to tuck your drink away in a secure chamber, out of sight—ensures that a garishly colored bottle will never clash with your tasteful backpack.

A close-up of the leather zipper on the July Carry All Backpack Series 2.

It’s perfect for carrying medium loads. With a 20-liter capacity, the Carry All is roomy enough for your essentials—it easily fits a long weekend’s worth of clothing, toiletries, and tech—but it won’t tempt you to overpack.

The adjustable straps are just right for midsize cargo, as they’re better cushioned than those on our pick from Everlane but not as substantial as the straps on our picks from Timbuk2 and Aer , so they hang more naturally over the shoulders when the bag isn’t full.

Our only knock: The Carry All lacks mesh padding at the back, so its substantial nylon material can feel warm against the body in hotter weather.

  • This backpack has only one water-bottle holder (on the left side, when worn), which can create an uneven distribution of weight.
  • Unlike other travel packs that we looked at, from Away and Italic , this bag doesn’t have air-mesh back panels, so it wears a little hotter.

Dimensions: 16 by 11 by 6.5 inches Weight: 2.2 pounds Capacity: 20 liters Maximum laptop size: 16 inches Warranty: July covers the Carry All Backpack with a five-year warranty . The company will repair or replace bags that have defects due to manufacturing faults within five years of purchase; cosmetic damages and general wear and tear are not covered.

The Everlane The ReNew Transit Backpack.

Everlane The ReNew Transit Backpack

Understated and versatile.

A streamlined design and welcome features—including a magnetic top closure and a plethora of pockets—make this budget-friendly, wear-anywhere bag look and feel pricier than it is. But unlike our other picks, it isn’t backed by a warranty.

Everlane’s The ReNew Transit Backpack is an effortlessly cool, feature-packed bag that excels in both form and function. It’s versatile enough to go from the workplace to a weekend getaway, and it comfortably carries midsize loads.

It has a contemporary, wear-anywhere vibe. The Transit balances its clean aesthetic with a slightly slouchy silhouette, so it looks equally at home in the office and on the go. The recycled-polyester exterior comes in an array of subtle colors.

It’s functional and feature-packed. The Transit’s main compartment is equipped with two slip pockets for notebooks or a tablet, as well as an interior water-bottle pocket. A zipper that runs along the side of the bag opens to a separate, padded laptop compartment that can accommodate computers up to 15 inches, though the side-access placement can take some getting used to.

The spacious zippered front compartment makes it easy for you to access your commuter essentials, and the external side water-bottle pocket smoothly accommodates a 24-ounce water bottle. The backpack’s fold-over top has another roomy zippered pocket and is secured with an invisible magnetic closure—a favorite feature for all of our testers, and a plus if you have reduced manual dexterity.

It’s best suited for medium-size loads. Weighing just 1.42 pounds when empty, the Transit is the lightest of our picks. Its straps are gently contoured, and while you’re on the go, you can easily make length adjustments to get the perfect fit.

Although the Transit has a spacious, 27-liter capacity, we don’t recommend filling it to the brim with your heaviest gear; its lightly padded straps make it best for more modest cargo. We were perfectly comfortable toting a laptop, water bottle, notebook, and sweater in it.

School supplies inside the Everlane The ReNew Transit Backpack.

It’s a great value. The Transit is one of the most budget-friendly of our picks, but it has an upscale look—the reveal of its sub-$100 price tag prompted several “Wait, what?!” reactions from testers, friends, and colleagues.

Although the Transit is not as tough as our picks from Timbuk2 and Aer or as luxe as the Troubadour Apex 3.0 and July Carry All bags, its sturdy, water-resistant exterior and all-metal hardware hold up capably over time. One tester, who has been using the Transit regularly for a year and counting, reports that her bag isn’t showing a single sign of wear.

  • The side-zip laptop compartment requires you to insert and remove your computer at an angle, rather than sliding it smoothly in and out; all of our other picks, in contrast, have easier-to-access top-zip laptop compartments. And its placement (on the right of the pack, when worn) is awkward if you’re left-handed.
  • One tester noted that when the bag is especially full, the magnetic closure for the fold-over top comes undone.
  • This is the only backpack we recommend that isn’t backed by a warranty.
  • Due to this bag’s popularity, we’ve seen frequent stock issues.

Dimensions: 17.5 by 12 by 7.25 inches Weight: 1.42 pounds Capacity: 27 liters Maximum laptop size: 15 inches Warranty: none

The Aer Duffel Pack 3.

Aer Duffel Pack 3

For fitness buffs.

This futuristic-looking backpack seamlessly transitions from office to gym, with ultra-comfortable straps and plenty of organization for your gadgets and gear—plus a ventilated shoe compartment. It’s over 20 inches tall, so it fits best on people with a bigger back.

Fitness-minded folks who hit the gym before or after work—and who don’t mind carrying a longer bag—will appreciate the stylish, protective, and extremely ergonomic Aer Duffel Pack 3 .

It’s the comfiest of our picks for carrying heavy loads. Among all the laptop backpacks we tested, the Duffel Pack 3 was the best at comfortably distributing weight. At 2.9 pounds, it’s also the heaviest bag we recommend—but thanks to its ergonomic design, those extra ounces aren’t noticeable.

The back panel and contoured shoulder straps are cushioned with plush, breathable mesh padding. A secure, easily adjustable sternum strap clicks across the chest to position the bag correctly—a feature that comes highly recommended by physical therapist Sarah Lloyd and is especially helpful when the bag is heavy.

It keeps gym gear separate. Cleverly designed compartments divide sweaty clothes and shoes from the rest of your stuff. True to its name, the Duffel Pack 3’s spacious, well-designed main area opens wide to allow top-to-bottom access to your duds; its interior lining is treated with an antimicrobial coating to control odors. A ventilated shoe compartment, which unzips at the base of the backpack, keeps stinky trainers away from your other gear.

It’s just as well suited for work as it is for the gym. The Duffel Pack 3 is no one-trick pony. You can stow your computer and other gadgets in its amply padded back compartment, which includes numerous slip pockets as well as a stretchy mesh zippered pouch, perfect for storing a laptop charger.

For convenient access to belongings while you’re on the go, this Aer pack has two zippered pockets on the front that blend into its pleated exterior. You’ll also find an easily reachable pocket at the top of the bag for your phone—lined with a plush material—as well as two elasticized side water-bottle pockets.

The back of the Aer Duffel Pack 3.

It’s the most protective of our picks. The 16-inch laptop compartment is substantially padded and has a plush lining that won’t scratch delicate surfaces. It also features a “false bottom” to keep your computer suspended safely above the base of the bag, protecting it from bumps and drops. And during our tests, the pack’s water-resistant Cordura material (a tightly woven nylon performance fabric) and sealed waterproof zippers kept gear dry in the rain.

Everything about the Duffel Pack 3 feels high quality, including its ballistic-nylon exterior, YKK-brand zippers, and Duraflex plastic hardware. Plus, Aer backs its products with a lifetime warranty.

  • The substantially padded shoulder straps and back panel can feel bulky when you aren’t carrying much in the pack.
  • At 20.5 inches long, the Duffel Pack 3 may overwhelm smaller frames. If you’re under 5-foot-10 or so, you may prefer the nearly identical but sized-down Aer Fit Pack 3 , which is 17.5 inches long and has a 18.7-liter capacity.
  • While this bag is long and heavy, its 21.4-liter capacity is actually not as generous as that of some of our other picks, though its clever layout does make good use of the space. Much of its bulk comes from all the extra padding.

Dimensions: 20.5 by 11.75 by 8 inches Weight: 2.9 pounds Capacity: 21.4 liters Maximum laptop size: 16 inches Warranty: Aer covers the Duffel Pack 3 with a lifetime warranty , which guarantees quality and performance for the practical lifetime of the product. Aer will repair or replace products that fail due to manufacturing defects at no additional charge. General wear and tear is not covered.

If you’re looking for a stylish, smaller-scale pack for organizing tech: The Aer Day Pack 2 has tons of pockets and organization for corralling your gadgets, including a padded, suspended 16-inch laptop sleeve. It has ultra-comfortable padded straps and a breathable mesh back panel—but with a capacity of 15 liters, it’s best for those who travel light. Its exterior has a sleeker look than the Timbuk2 Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe , our other ultra-techie pick. Note: This style has been replaced by an updated version, the Aer Day Pack 3 , which we have not yet tested. At the time of publishing, the Day Pack 2 is still being sold while inventory lasts.

If you commute mostly by bike and need a bag that can withstand the elements: The Chrome Industries Urban Ex 2.0 —which comes in 20-liter and 30-liter versions—is tough, durable and comfortable. Its rugged, waterproof exterior has handy loops for hooking a helmet or U-lock, and the roll-top closure lets you shrink and expand the bag as needed. The back panel and shoulder straps are well padded, and an adjustable chest buckle keeps the pack securely in place as you whip around turns. Note: This style has been replaced by an updated version, the Urban Ex Backpack ( 20L and 30L ), which we have not tested. At the time of publishing, the Urban Ex 2.0 is still being sold on some sites while inventory lasts.

If you want a chic, affordable backpack with a silky sheen: The Lululemon New Crew Backpack 22L Logo is a sporty, stylish pack with an upscale look—making its under-$100 price tag all the more welcome (and surprising). Its water-repellent nylon fabric is lustrous and fluid, and it comes in a selection of clean, monochromatic neutrals with color-matched zippers, straps, and branding. We hoped that the New Crew would fill the hole left behind by the Lululemon Everyday Backpack 2.0, a previous (and much beloved) pick in this guide, which was discontinued in January 2024. In many ways, the New Crew fits the bill. It has a similar aesthetic and a 22-liter capacity, with lightly padded straps for comfortably toting light-to-medium loads. A dedicated laptop compartment holds a computer up to 15 inches, and a spacious main compartment ably contains bulkier items. On the exterior, there are two water bottle pockets and a shallow front pocket, which opens via an attached carabiner with a long loop. But the New Crew falls short in some ways that were tough to overlook. Its three interior slip pockets feel flimsy, and lack closures or elastic to keep belongings secure. And the plastic carabiner on the exterior pocket can come off if you pull too hard; should it become detached (or lost), the zipper is difficult to operate without it.

To find great backpacks for anyone who commutes with a laptop, we considered the following criteria:

  • Comfort and fit: Our picks allow adjustments so that they sit correctly—high and close to the back—on a variety of bodies and are comfortable to wear for an entire commute. Some also have comfort-enhancing features such as contoured straps, breathable mesh padding, and sternum straps, which clip across your chest to stabilize the bag. We also consulted with physical therapist Sarah Lloyd, director of clinical education at Spear Physical Therapy , for expert guidance on how to wear a backpack ergonomically .
  • Laptop protection: We wanted packs with a well-padded compartment for storing at least a 15-inch laptop. They should also keep tech dry in inclement weather.
  • Organization: In addition to a main compartment, a good commuter backpack should have an easily accessible front pocket and a place to securely stash a water bottle. Many of our picks offer quite a bit more, including thoughtfully designed features for containing tech, travel documents, gym gear, and other necessities.
  • Quality and durability: We examined each bag’s construction, from the stitching to the fabrics to the padding. We tested zippers, snaps, buckles, and sliders for their durability and ease of use. Most of the backpacks we recommend are also covered by warranties.
  • Aesthetics: We considered bags in a variety of styles, from polished packs that could give even the sleekest totes a run for their money to rugged bags for taming tech and sweaty gym gear. All of our picks are attractive and office-appropriate.
  • Price: We focused on bags that cost less than $300, and we found plenty of great options for far less.

We then put the laptop backpacks that satisfied our initial criteria to the test in the field. My Wirecutter colleagues and I have worn dozens of backpacks for commutes by train, bus, bike, and car. We’ve also schlepped through airports with them and taken them for long walks in all sorts of weather.

This is not a comprehensive list of everything we’ve tested for previous iterations of this guide, just what’s still available.

The inexpensive Amazon Basics Laptop Backpack has good reviews, but we think it’s alarmingly ugly. It was out of stock at the time of our testing, too.

We had difficulty accessing the contents of the very expensive Sandqvist Alva .

We found the straps on the travel-ready Away Front Pocket Backpack stiff and uncomfortable.

Testers liked the Bellroy Classic Backpack but not as much as they did any of our picks. The Bellroy Classic Backpack Plus was uncomfortable.

The Dagne Dover Dakota Neoprene Backpack has a fun, pop-art-meets-streetwear vibe, but it’s heavy and expensive, and in our tests it felt stiflingly hot against our backs.

We used to recommend the Fjällräven Räven 28 for travel, but unlike our current travel pick, the July Carry All , it lacks a luggage pass-through.

Testers enjoyed the cute Herschel Nova Backpack Mid-Volume but said it wasn’t grown-up enough for the office. The weather-resistant Herschel Survey II Backpack hung too low on our 5-foot-6 tester—even with the straps fully tightened—and its front pocket is frustratingly hidden beneath the top flap.

The large, office-to-gym Lo & Sons Hakuba was heavy and hot to wear.

The Lululemon City Adventurer Backpack 20L is too small to be a functional work-to-gym bag. And we couldn’t even fit a full workday’s worth of stuff into the 10-liter Osprey Arcane Small Day .

The Matein Travel Laptop Backpack felt cheaply made.

For a commuter bag, the Patagonia Black Hole Pack 25L was too bulky and disorganized.

The Public Rec Pro Pack Plus is a travel backpack that looks sophisticated, but we found it uncomfortable. We’ve seen availability issues with this pack, too, though it should be restocked.

The stylish, waterproof Rains Backpack Mini doesn’t fit much (9 liters), and it’s uncomfortable for carrying a laptop—the thin straps are poorly padded and hard to adjust.

Though the State Kane Double Pocket Large is spacious and well organized, the material wears hot, and the straps are a bit stiff and under-padded.

The Topo Rover Pack is well made and comfortable. But its tall, narrow shape restricts its capacity, and its campground aesthetic can feel a little juvenile for the workplace.

The 13 Best Laptop Backpacks To Buy for Travel in 2024

In order to safely transport your laptop from place to place, you need a protective vessel that not only works hard to keep your tech safe but is also comfortable to carry around with you.

Backpacks are the preferred bag type of students, commuters, and frequent flyers. Finding one that will fit your laptop as well as your day-to-day belongings will make travel just a little bit easier.

Laptop Backpack size

The size of your backpack should be large enough to comfortably accommodate your laptop and accessories, yet small enough to fit in an overhead bin.

Internal compartments should be roomy enough to fit not just your laptop and charger, but also all your vital necessities, including your wallet , cell phone, glasses, keys, and all the other things you rely on, to prevent you from needing to carry yet another purse or shoulder bag with you.

The size of your laptop will dictate the size of your backpack. Laptop backpacks have a dedicated, padded compartment to slip your laptop into, so it’s important to make sure that the pocket is large enough to fit your laptop.

Standard size dimensions include 15-, 16-, and 17-inch laptop compartments. The thickness of your laptop can make a difference in whether or not it fits, so be sure to take that into account.

Laptop backpack weight

Because laptops and all of their necessary paraphernalia can be heavy to carry around, your laptop backpack needs to be as lightweight as possible.

You want to be able to work on the move, but not be so weighed down that you suffer back strain while getting there. Laptops are designed to be portable, so the backpack that you carry it in should be easy and comfortable to carry as well.

Material and Durability

Laptop Backpack Material

The level of protection your laptop backpack offers is one of the most vital aspects of its purpose. Your laptop needs protection not just from knocks and drops, but also from wet weather.

Some of the very best laptop backpacks on the market are made using waterproof (or at least water-resistant) material that will protect your laptop from the elements and is easy to clean.

Make sure that the material your laptop backpack is made out of is durable, resistant to abrasions, and won’t rip or tear, leaving your laptop vulnerable to the outside.

Meshed backs, curved back systems, and padded through-flows are also useful backpack design features that stop you from getting a sweaty back when carrying your backpack for long periods of time or in hot weather.

Handles and Straps

Laptop Backpack straps

The beauty of a backpack is that it leaves your hands free for carrying coffee, checking social media on your phone, or holding on to your plane ticket. It’s essential that your backpack have strong, durable straps that will carry all the weight you put in it without tiring out your shoulders.

Comfort is also key.  Handles and straps should sit comfortably on your shoulders. They should be able to carry the weight of the bag with ease and not start to come loose or strain at the seams.

Backpack straps and handles should also be adjustable so you can find the most comfortable position that doesn’t cause back strain.

Laptop Compartment and Pockets

Laptop Backpack

A superb laptop backpack should have multiple pockets and spaces to store all of your items.

The laptop compartment itself must be well-padded to ensure that your device is kept safe from knocks and damage at all times.

Additional pockets should be carefully devised to ensure that they can hold your chargers and cables without squashing or tangling them. There should also be a good variety of internal pockets that can be zipped up tight to keep USB sticks and other peripherals safe.

There should be plenty of room for your wallet, keys, and phone, all kept safely away from the laptop compartment to avoid scratching or damage as you reach in to grab what you need.

Smart Luggage

When it was first invented, smart luggage was considered to be the most exciting thing to happen in the world of carry-on bags . Cabin bags and laptop cases fitted with this type of technology were a real game-changer.

That was until airlines banned them due to the risk of carrying lithium batteries on packed commuter flights.

You can still take your smart luggage into the cabin, but there are very strict rules that apply. You must be able to remove the battery from the smart luggage in case it needs to be checked. This news may change your mind about paying the extra dollar for these handy features.

But fear not, dear flyer, for there are plenty of excellent laptop backpacks on the market without lithium batteries that will keep your beloved laptop safe and sound while you travel.

While there are many, many laptop backpacks on the market to choose from, only a few of them really make the grade. Here are some of our favorites.

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

This laptop backpack from Volher is the best option for most travellers, combining practical storage with an eye-catching, vibrant design. Inside the bag’s main compartment, there’s a padded sleeve for any 15.6-inch laptop and open storage for clothes, snacks, or other travel essentials. You can store drinks in the padded mesh side pockets, and hide your valuables in the anti-theft back pocket.

Its durable fabric makes this backpack an excellent choice for hiking trips or other outdoor excursions, especially if you choose one of the bright, high-visibility color options. With padded mesh on the back and the shoulder straps, it’s comfortable to wear for long hours.

This travel bag also has a special feature: a built-in USB charging port. The port itself is on the bag’s left side, and there’s a cable inside you can connect to a power bank. Then, while you’re hiking or walking around Disney World, you can easily charge your phone without needing to take the backpack off or hold onto a power bank.

Best laptop backpacks for travel 2024 - eBags Luxon Laptop Backpack

In many ways, the search for the perfect travel laptop backpack is just like searching for a work- or school-dedicated backpack. Most importantly, consider what you’ll need in terms of total space and organizational compartments. Make sure the backpack you choose can accommodate your laptop, travel snacks and drinks, handheld gaming console or books to read for fun, however many changes of clothes you need for your trip, or anything else you’d typically bring along while traveling.

Many backpacks will list whether they can accommodate 15.6-inch or 17-inch laptops, and some brands will list the specific dimensions of the laptop sleeve or compartment within the backpack. In addition to comparing the measurements of your laptop to those advertised by a potential backpack, consider whether you want a dedicated zipper compartment for your laptop or if a padded sleeve inside the main compartment will do.

With laptop backpacks for travel specifically, there are two useful features to look out for: hidden pockets and a USB charging port. Some backpacks come equipped with a zipper compartment positioned on the side or the back of the bag, making it incredibly difficult or impossible for someone to pickpocket what’s inside. These pockets are perfect for your valuables, like your wallet, smartphone, or keys.

Then, some bags include a USB charging port accessible on one side of the backpack and a cable inside that you can attach to a power bank you own. This allows you to comfortably charge your phone without needing to carry the power bank while you walk around a theme park or sit in the backseat during a road trip. With some travel backpacks, you can slip your phone into a side pocket so you don’t need to carry it, but it’s easily accessible when you need it.

If you plan on traveling via plane, you should see if the backpack complies with TSA guidelines. Then, check with your airline to get minimum dimensions for overhead and under-seat luggage to ensure you won’t need to check your backpack at the last minute and pay a premium.

For backpacks going under the seat in front of you on a plane, it’s a smart choice to go with a water-resistant polyester fabric that’s easy to clean and can withstand accidental spills. Durable, water-resistant fabric is also a smart choice if the place you’re traveling to gets a lot of rain or if you’re exploring outdoors at the beach or on a mountain.

travel backpack 16 inch laptop

  • Capacity: 24L
  • Dimensions: 48.5 x 27.5 x 18 cm (19.1 x 10.8 x 7.1 in)
  • Weight: 2.1 lb (0.95 kg)
  • Main Material: Shell 200
  • Size of Laptop Compartment: 16″

The Tortuga Setout Laptop Backpack is the smaller version of their original Setout pack. This bag is a 24-liter masterpiece for anyone looking for a smaller laptop bag that feels and looks great. We might have rated it second best travel computer backpack but for many this will come out on top. The Setout Laptop Backpack has plenty of organisational features including mesh pockets and a super-secure area for your laptop. The Setout Laptop is marketed as a laptop bag for those who do lots of air travel and we find it to be a great bag to take onto planes as its easy to find our stuff, and it fits snuggly under seats (even on Ryanair).

Personally I love how compact this bag is – 24L is normally a little small for me but I make an exception for this. While I personally miss having a water bottle pocket on the side, the grab handle is a nice touch for those occasions when my back and neck needs a rest. The zips also open really smoothly. Its size made it feel great to wear day in day out and the quality of the materials felt like it would cope well with daily abuse!

  • Main Material: Full-grain vegetable-tanned leather and waterproof cotton canvas

The Harber London Slim Laptop backpack is stylish and functional. It is quite literally a laptop backpack and won’t fit too much more in (although they do make bigger packs so take a look at their site) and just perfect for minimalists who want something a little bit special. The pack is crafted from Premium Full Grain Leather which feels really classy, soft and supple to touch. The interior is nicely padded, there are loads of pockets for you cables as well as a handle if you want to carry it.

This pack is very different to the other pack on our list and isn’t really comparable to say the more versatile Tortuga. It is however perhaps the most classy and stylish and I felt pretty hip when testing out in my home city; it certainly has more sex appeal than the functional North Face. When they sent me this to try I was impressed. It is a niche product but that for the right person this would be the absolute perfect choice. What I really like is how minimalist it is – no unnecessary bulk and will look good if you’ve got a meeting to attend but want something more practical than a briefcase.

  • Durable and comfortable
  • High Quality Material
  • Not cheap…

4#. Osprey Metron

Best commuter laptop bag.

Osprey Metron

  • Dimensions: 19.29H X 12.99W X 11.02D IN
  • Weight: 2.739 LBS
  • Main Material: 500D recycled high tenacity nylon

At 24l, the Osprey Metron is a well sized daypack which will accommodate your laptop, and lunch quite nicely. There is of course a padded laptop pouch along with enough pockets and pouches for keys, cards and pens. The compression straps are also a nice touch and we appreciated the way we could fasten the backpack down so it deint you won’t stick out like a tortoise and barge into people (as much) when you crowd onto the morning train.

TI personally used this backpack for day to use for a good while before I replaced it with an Osprey Quasar – the latter I found could also be used to double up as a hiking backpack. Though we’ve included it here as the best bag for commuters, our team really loved how versatile this bag felt. Osprey is known for their outdoor bags and our team felt this one was suited to just about anything you could throw at it, from hiking to biking into the office. All in, the quality of the materials, the solid build and integrated rain cover make this daypack tough enough for any adventure!

  • Osprey offer a robust guarantee
  • There aren’t any cons

5#. Gulu Made Inspire Backpack

Most ethical laptop backpack.

Gulu Motivator Pack

  • Capacity: 25 liters
  • Dimensions: 19 x 12 x 9 in
  • Weight: 2.0 lbs
  • Main Material: 500D nylon
  • Laptop compartment size: 15.6 inches

The Gulu Made brand set up shop building a backpacking factory in Uganda and has entrusted the local community with making sustainable backpacks built to last. These bags are designed and built by local tribes. The women of Gulu took modern comfort features into account, adding on water bottle holders and ten different organization pockets with an extra computer sleeve.

Not only is this pack amongst the most stylish I have tried, it is also genuinely well made and the organisational potential is great – the Inspire is the most spacious Gulu-made pack on the market and offers everything you need to commute in a sustainable style. If you are after an ethical product , this is a good on and if you love ethical travel gear, we have a cracking vegan backpack round-up on the site.

  • Ethical brand
  • Pretty inner lining
  • Good organisational potential
  • Not waterproof

#6. Incase Compass Backpack

Best backpack for 17-inch laptops.

travel backpack 16 inch laptop

  • Capacity: 27 liters
  • Dimensions: 18 x 11.75 x 5.25 in
  • Weight: 1.39 lbs
  • Main Material: Light-weight Flight Nylon
  • Laptop compartment size: 16 inches

Incase is known for making stylish business and laptop backpacks. Expandable, easy to travel with, and well-padded, the Incase Compass is also our choice for the best 17-inch laptop backpack! The bag itself is made out of 300D polyester, and the black option has a triple-coated weather-resistant front panel. The shoulder straps are made with breathable mesh, and the back panels are padded too. The main compartment has plenty of storage space, and it expands by 35% to fit all of the clothes you may need. You can also maintain a slimmer profile if you are just using it for layovers and day trips.

While I personally don’t like the look of this one, we found it to be one of the best laptop bags for travel because of the way the laptop sleeve is set up. This backpack is smaller than others on this list, but the Incase Compass makes use of its space and we hardly felt the limitations. All in, what we loved most about this bag was how the laptop had its own dedicated pocket away from everything else.

  • Great for on-the-go travel
  • Fits up to a 16-inch laptop
  • Padded back panels
  • Zippable laptop compartment makes security checks a breeze
  • Might be too small for long term travelers

#7. Gregory Rune

Best commuter laptop backpack.

Gregory Rhune Backpack

  • Capacity: 28 liters
  • Dimensions: 19″ x 11″ x 9″
  • Weight: 2.74 lbs
  • Main Material: 210D nylon and 420D high-density nylon
  • Laptop compartment size: 15 inches

The Gregory Rhune brings a durable and sustainable approach to the everyday backpack concept. All fabrics used in this pack are made from recycled materials resulting in a 51% in the production cycles carbon footprint.  However, eco-credentials aside, this is a genuinely bloody good pack with an excellent  attention to details. Designed for an active user the Rhune packs have an integrated shoulder harness pocket that is perfect for ear buds, transit passes, or mints.

The pack is accessed by a top-lid opening that pulls back – that’s not an opening style that I am too used to but it’s fine and actually makes packing and unpacking very easy. Inside the pack, the main compartment is split into 3 handy compartments including a very generous laptop compartment. To the touch, the material used in construction of the Gregory Rhune feels quite strong and durable and yet, the pack feels very light to carry. Overall, this is a great backpack for commutes and for day travel.

  • Mid-Weight 0.925 kg
  • Made from recycled materials
  • Not great for hiking
  • Small water bottle pocket

#8. Timbuk 2 Lane Commuter

Best small laptop backpack for travel.

travel backpack 16 inch laptop

  • Capacity: 18 liters
  • Dimensions: 10.8″ x 5.91″ x 17.7″
  • Weight: 2.4 lb
  • Main Material: 400D nylon faille

The Timbuk 2 is quite similar to the Incase above. It’s a smaller laptop TSA-friendly backpack that works great for both travel and work, and is one of the best lightweight laptop backpacks. There is a side pocket for your water bottle and a front pocket that is useful for your passport and boarding pass so I would gladly take this onto a flight. The main compartment has plenty of space, and the one in front of it has three smaller compartments for organization.

This backpack is comfortable too – it feels nice against the back and on the shoulders. The drawback about this bag is that it’s not big enough to take on most long backpacking trips; however, if you are just looking for a bag for everyday use, and quick weekend trips, this is a sleek, low-profile backpack that will keep all your stuff organized. Our team loved how balanced the weight felt in this pack when their laptops were stowed.

  • Laptop compartment zips away for easy security checks
  • Dedicated tablet pocket
  • 5-year warranty
  • Great for weekend trips or quick getaways (or super light travelers)

#9. LowePro ProTactic 450

Best laptop backpack for travel photographers.

lowepro photography carry on backpack

  • Capacity: Not specified
  • Dimensions: 13.78″ x 9.06″ x 20.08″
  • Weight: 6.28 lbs
  • Main Material: 900D and 1680D nylon

If you are a serious photographer or have aspirations to be – this bag is next-level.

The LowePro ProTactic 450 is far and away the most functional and stylish backpack for photographers and videographers. The most impressive thing of the ProTactic is how big it is and how well organized the compartments are. Fitting up to two DSLR’s, a 15″ laptop and some drones, this bag is versatile and able to handle all of your tech needs . It’s practically a mobile office! You can go out shooting, pull out your laptop, and begin editing right then and there.

I don’t use a DSLR and so didn’t actually use this as a camera bag. Still, it is one of the best laptop backpacks for many, many reasons. If you want to learn more about the Lowpro, be sure to visit our post on the best camera bags , where we go into more detail.

  • Fits 1 or 2 DSLRs
  • Four camera-access points
  • Ventilation and back support
  • Laptop pocket and additional accessories
  • Only useful for photographers

#10. AER Travel Sling 2 X-Pac

Best laptop messenger bag.

aer city messenger bag

  • Capacity: 12 liters
  • Dimensions: 16″ x 11″ x 4.5″
  • Weight: 1.8 lbs
  • Main Material: VX-42 X-Pac™ sailcloth exterior by Dimension-Polyant

AER has done it again! They’ve taken the same ergonomic principles that were used for their laptop backpack and applied them to a messenger bag. The result: an amazing laptop messenger bag that is very efficient, effective, and, above all, useful. The AER Travel Sling 2 X-Pac is very useful. It comfortably holds a 16-inch MacBook and can even hold a camera kit with a few lenses after some rearranging. The fact that the interior of this bag can be rearranged, much like a camera bag, makes it stand out from the rest as well. At the end of the day, this is more than a messenger bag.

We were quite intrigued about giving this a go as many are used to the traditional backpack setup. To be honest, this is a great bag but after a while I did start to feel the weight of my laptop handing around my neck. Still, I loved how compact and lowkey the bag was whilst also providing a surprising amount of storage and organisation and I was also impressed with how comfortable the padded strap felt on one shoulder.

  • Customizable interior.
  • Sleek, ergonomic design.
  • Top-quality manufacturing.
  • Not as big as the backpack.
  • Like the backpack, straps can be awkward.

#11. Minaal Carry On 2.0 Backpack

Best travel backpack for europe.

best travel backpack for europe

  • Capacity: 9.8 liters
  • Dimensions: 16.5″ x 10.6″ x 4.7″
  • Weight: 1.76 lbs
  • Main Material: 1680D Cordura ballistic nylon
  • Laptop compartment size: 13 inches

The Minaal Carry On has updated their original travel backpack to the 2.0, and it’s loaded with new features that improve its functionality, and make it one of the best laptop backpacks for travel! This backpack has the perfect dimensions carry-on any flight (22 x 14 x 9 inches), including those strict European budget airlines, which is one of the reasons why we chose it as one of the best backpacks for travel in Europe. The main compartment zips all the way open like a suitcase which I find some getting used to, but then found to be absolutely great. The larger side is perfect for packing your clothes, shoes, and other items.

All in, we loved this sleek and professional-looking bag, but one of the standout features they told us about what they particularly loved was the zippers. Not only are they super strong and smooth, but they’ve got built-in loops for locking them and keeping your laptop secure. The Minaal Carry-On is made from heavy-duty nylon, so the fabric does a solid job repelling water. The shoulder straps and removable hip straps pack away easily for transit, and the strap system and cushioned back panel foam allow for ultimate comfort.

  • Perfect carry on dimensions
  • Removable hip strap
  • Rain cover that packs into itself
  • Locking zippers
  • Suspended laptop sleeve helps protect laptop if you drop your bag

#12. GoRuck GR1

Most durable travel laptop backpack.

GR1 durable backpack

  • Capacity: 35 liters
  • Dimensions: 21.5″ x 13.5″ x 7.5″
  • Weight: 3.4 lbs
  • Main Material: Waterproof sailcloth and ballistic

Another one of the best-organized backpacks, 26-litre GoRuck GR1 was designed and built for war zones and cities alike by a former Army Green Beret to be extremely durable and adaptable. For one, this is the most durable backpack on this list, designed for any weather and climate. The YKK zippers perform in sandstorms, and the 1000 Cordura material is rainproof.

This bag is also extremely comfortable. The shoulder straps are padded to handle heavy loads (like 400 pounds), and this backpack is designed to sit high so the weight doesn’t hang on your shoulders. Above all we loved what just how bloody hard wearing these beasts are. What I loved less was the price tag though.

  • Most durable backpack for laptops
  • Waterproof and weatherproof
  • Strength tested
  • Can fit 17 inch laptop

#13. Fjallraven Kanken Laptop Backpack

A simple and easy to use laptop backpack.

best carry on laptop bag fjallraven kanken

Fjallraven is one of the most recognizable backpack brands out there. Seriously, you can’t walk a mile in the city and not see someone sporting one of these boxy bags as they appeal to just about every type of person. The Fjallraven Kanken, one of the company’s flagship models, can also be used as a traveling laptop backpack. They are spacious enough to a hold a 15″ computer, include a nice dedicated laptop sleeve, and are pretty resistant to the elements. If you’re looking for something quick and easy, not to mention in-vogue, then buying all Fjallraven Kanken wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Fjallraven’s do have their limits though. I personally find their boxy design is a little awkward sometimes, although these bags are still comfortable to wear. If you need an everyday backpack, and not JUST a backpack for traveling, it’s hard to go wrong with the Fjallraven Kanken. It’s proven itself over and over and will probably keep on doing just that.

  • Rugged, water-resistant material
  • Very easy to use
  • Great for everyday use
  • Less protective padding

#14. The Roll Top Stubble & Co

Best hipster laptop backpack.

Stubble and Co Roll Top

We recently came across Stubble & Co and tried a bunch of their packs for ourselves – honestly we were seriously impressed by most of them. The Roll Top is a great hipster-style 20L bag perfect for carrying around your laptop as well as having heaps of room for your other accessories. What really makes it stand out for a day pack is that the laptop compartment is in a separate pocket on the back of the bag. This both makes it mega secure (especially for a roll top) and also saves the massive main compartment for everything else.

Internally the main compartment is one massive space with a selection of pockets and organisers attached to the other side of the laptop compartment/ back panel. This works well giving you some level of organisation whilst also being super roomy.

  • Capable of carrying laptops up to 16”
  • Roll top makes it expandable
  • Durable and weather resistant material
  • Could do with more internal organisation
  • Would like an internal zip as well as the roll top

#15 Tom Toc T73-x

Hottest new laptop pack.

The Navigator-T66 Travel Laptop Backpack is the perfect travel companion for digital nomads. It offers a large capacity along with many compartments for organisation. The size is generally perfect for 5-7 days of light packing and has fast become one of my favourite bits of travel gear .

I chose this backpack as my travel bag for all my weekend getaway trips while backpacking through Southeast Asia. It comfortably fits my stuff for weekend getaways and helps me stay organised with the handy laptop sleeve.

I really love all the compartments included; they help me stay extremely organised. It has a large capacity for longer trips and It’s easy to find most of my belongings. The only downside is its build for a woman. I find the bag to be a bit big and bulky on me. But I love the large capacity for longer trips. I find it easy to find most of my belongings.

Tomtoc t73x backpack

  • Ace organisation capacity
  • Durable, high quality and stylish
  • Not large enough for long trips
  • Maybe kinda bulky

The Best Laptop Backpacks of 2024

Best Laptop Backpacks – Hero

Now that we live in a post-pandemic world, it seems that everyone is returning to their selective workplace, school, or airport with a backpack in hand. Laptop backpacks come in an array of styles, sizes, and overall intended uses so we thought it was time to take a deep dive into what the best ones are and what attributes make them that way.

When you’ve invested in a portable computer or tablet, you’ll want to pair it with a backpack that is going to keep it plenty protected while also providing ample room for books, chargers, and other equipment. Students, freelancers, and working professionals alike deserve to have a backpack that best suits their needs without sacrificing quality or completely breaking the bank.

An EDC — or “everyday carry” — laptop backpack is a pack designed with the necessary padding needed to keep a computer or tablet safe from the shock and irreversible damage that comes with an unideal tumble or drop. These backpacks can also have waterproofing or resistance that keeps your tech and other things safe from rain, snow, sleet, or that half-full coffee mug your cat just swatted off your desk.

Our testers rounded up what we think are the best 10 laptop backpacks on the market right now and used them in airports, offices, and coffee shops across America. To truly assess these backpacks’ abilities to, well, do their job, lead tester Meghan put them through a months-long, rigorous testing process where she examined their protective qualities, overall comfort, and intended uses. This came with its own unplanned series of accidental drops, liquid spills, and snowy trudges to and from her favorite workplaces.

As a full-time, freelance graphic designer, writer, and photographer, Meghan did not take this task lightly, as she herself has been utilizing laptop backpacks for almost a decade. She knows that keeping hundreds or thousands of dollars in tech equipment safe is no joke, and you’re going to want a streamlined laptop backpack that doesn’t sacrifice weight or style when it comes to protecting your valuables.

Of course, there isn’t one perfect laptop backpack for everyone, but this guide will be a sure-fire way for you to narrow down what you are searching for in terms of style, padding, and other specifics. At the end of our selection, you’ll find our helpful comparison chart , buyer’s guide , and frequently asked questions .

Editor’s Note: We updated our laptop backpack guide on May 22, 2024, to cover the Able Carry Thirteen Daybag , a diminutive laptop commuter that doesn’t skimp on high-quality materials or design.

  • Functions as both a laptop backpack and suitcase
  • Well-structured and protected
  • Full panel loading access
  • Limited color schemes

There’s a multitude of reasons the Evergoods Civic Panel Loader 24L ($279) was our pick for the best laptop backpack of 2024. From the office to photography sessions and weekend trips away, this backpack really does it all due to its high-capacity storage and organization systems.

The first reason we love the Evergoods Civic Panel Loader 24L is the highly protective construction and abrasion-resistant materials it’s designed with. Evergoods uses a custom-developed 840d ballistic nylon that is treated with a water-resistant finish that makes this backpack last through countless trips to and from the office or journeys across the globe in all the various elements.

The thick padding throughout protects your electronics from drops or spills, giving you a major sense of security while in use. We were super impressed with the plastic shield that is integrated directly into the back panel, even furthering this backpack’s level of laptop protection.

Evergoods certainly did not compromise any level of comfort when they designed this backpack, The Civic Panel Loader 24L has moisture-wicking straps and back panel. Our tester wore this around town during a work-from-cafe day in which she walked in both cold and snowy weather. Her back and shoulders stayed cool and dry while not even getting remotely sore despite the heavy amount of gear she packed.

While 24 L may not seem like much, this backpack can actually pack quite a bit despite its size. Our tester was able to fit a luggage cube full of clothing, her computer, a keyboard, a mouse, and a book into it for a weekend trip away.

Much like the Fjällräven Kånken 17″ Laptop Pack , the front vestibule of the Civic Panel Loader opens fully — which makes it super easy to pack and unpack on those shorter journeys. This is also a major plus if you are a frequent flier and constantly going through airport security.

And while $279 is a steep price to pay for a laptop backpack, this piece is truly a lifelong investment thanks to its overall functionality and durability. Even better, Evergoods has placed a lifetime warranty on the Civic Panel backpacks, which covers any defects in materials or workmanship on these products.

Whether you’re a graphic designer needing a safe place to rest your tablet or laptop, or you’re regularly traveling for work, be sure to check out the Evergoods Civic Panel Loader 24L for its exceptional design, top-of-the-line device protection, and sleek aesthetic. Overall, this laptop backpack is simply a standout.

Lenovo Laptop Backpack B210

  • Dimensions 17.93 x 13.4 x 5.91 in.
  • Weight 1 lb.
  • Capacity 23L
  • Laptop compartment size 15.6 in.
  • Best use Office, non-commuter environments

The Best Laptop Backpacks of 2024

  • Deep exterior zippered pockets
  • Large interior can fit a computer and plenty of other accessories
  • Interior pockets are not zippered
  • Lack of water bottle pocket
  • Flimsy, not durable design

At only $22 on Amazon, the Lenovo Laptop Backpack B210 is our most affordable option listed for this buyer’s guide. And while it may lack in engineering and features that the other packs listed can boast, this one is still a simple option for those seeking a backpack that can just “do the trick.”

With a spacious interior compartment and deep exterior pocket, this backpack can fit a large laptop, plenty of books, and other gear. The Lenovo B210 has a simple construction with decent padding. Even after tossing this pack around, the laptop inside stayed completely safe which came as a surprise seeing as how low the price tag is.

Where the Lenovo B210 lacks is in its materials. While it is listed as water-resistant on its product specs, we found that the pack did not ward off any water when put under a running sink. The straps are also made of an itchy foam textile that feels uncomfortable when wearing a tank top or sleeveless shirt. We also found that the adjustable straps and buckles are made with flimsier, less durable materials that do not boast too much longevity.

We also wish that this laptop backpack had more internal organization as the interior pockets lack any zippers. The front exterior pocket is extremely spacious, but this in turn makes it challenging to find smaller supplies or accessories. If you still desire a lower price and require some organization in your backpack, an option like the Everlane ReNew Transit Backpack may be better catered toward your needs.

However, we understand that everyone can’t spend hundreds of dollars on a laptop backpack. For this price, we were honestly impressed with how well this backpack blended in with the other more pricey packs of this guide. Especially if you’re on a budget as a student, working professional, or just need a temporary option while you search for something nicer, this backpack is still a good choice — it just won’t last you a few years.

Overall, the Lenovo Laptop Backpack B210 is just fine for the extremely reasonable price. For 22 bucks, this backpack can securely hold your laptop, but don’t expect it to last a lifetime or hold up through the daily wear and tear of life.

TimBuk2 Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe

  • Dimensions 18.9 x 11 x 5.3 in.
  • Weight 2 lbs., 6.4 oz.
  • Capacity 20L
  • Laptop compartment size 17 in.

The Best Laptop Backpacks of 2024

  • Plenty of secure pockets
  • Generous padding keeps laptop and shoulders protected
  • Streamlined, modern design
  • Front zippered pocket is harder to open
  • Water bottle pocket is narrow
  • Limited colorways

When considering the top spots for the best laptop backpacks of 2024, there was no question that the TimBuk2 Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe ($159) would be near the top of our list. Not only did this pack pass our “laptop drop test” with flying colors, but it also is extremely versatile in the office, classroom, or on board an airplane.

The TimBuk2 Authority is minimally designed, but includes several useful features like two interior pockets that are lined with a microfiber material so you can safely store your glasses while in transit. This pack also has a mesh, zippered interior pocket for pens, chargers, and other small gear.

Thanks to the thick, waffle-style padding on the back panel and shoulder straps, this backpack is genuinely comfortable while on. The moisture-wicking materials will keep you cool while commuting on foot to the office. If you opt for cycling to and from work, you can be assured that the reflective straps on the underside of this backpack will keep you plenty visible to those passing by via car.

In terms of protection, this laptop backpack is not too shabby. Our lead tester accidentally dropped this backpack with her actual computer in it (not the dud, oops) out of her truck onto an icy patch of her driveway. Unsurprisingly and thanks to the stiff padding included in this backpack, her computer was completely fine. Even though the backpack sleeve isn’t suspended like the Evergoods Civic Panel Loader 24L , it still functions superbly.

While we wouldn’t necessarily use this backpack as a full-on carry-on bag due to its narrower design that doesn’t accommodate bulky items like excessive clothes or shoes, it still is the perfect companion when traveling via plane. It has a luggage strap located on the back panel so you can toss it onto your roller bag on those longer connections.

Another remarkable aspect of the Authority is the front panel pocket that unzips completely — making it super easy to find that pesky SD card or cord that may have fallen to the bottom of your backpack. No more having to awkwardly dig around for things when you can easily get the full scope of what you’re looking for.

Whether you’re looking for a laptop backpack to use as a daily driver to and from work or you need a personal item to hold your tablet and other necessities for your next trip, the TimBuk2 Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe is a supreme option for less than 160 bucks. This durably made and highly protective pack is a more than worth it investment that will be sure to last a lifetime.

Fjällräven Kånken 17″ Laptop Pack

  • Dimensions 16.5 x 11.8 x 7.1 in.
  • Weight 1 lb., 1.6 oz.
  • Best use School and travel

The Best Laptop Backpacks of 2024

  • Cube-design more conducive to storage
  • Extra foam insert doubles as a seat pad
  • Stylish and carry-on compliant
  • Side pockets are not stretchy enough for larger bottles
  • Only two zipper pockets
  • Fabric is easily creased

Designed with style and storage in mind, the Fjällräven Kånken 17″ Laptop Pack ($125) performed exceptionally well in our testing process. Using it as a carry-on bag while traveling across the United States, our tester was able to fit her laptop, camera cube, hard drives, book, wallet, and keyboard with some room to spare. It slid easily under the seat in front of her while airborne and was easy to maneuver on and off during security checks.

The Fjällräven Kånken has a padded 17-inch laptop sleeve that kept our tester’s 13-inch laptop well-protected during her travels and conveniently doubled as a sitting pad, thanks to the removable foam insert. Due to the box shape that provides the generous 20-liter storage capacity, this backpack opens up wide and fits lots of gear. Our tester’s camera storage cube fit pretty much perfectly with extra room for her book and headphones.

This iconic backpack is stylish and retro, making it perfect for students and young professionals looking for a minimalistic look. Aside from being aesthetically pleasing, the Kånken is constructed with Vinylon F, Fjällräven’s durable and water-resistant synthetic material seen in all of their Kånken models. This material helps their Kanken packs stay stiff, without losing any of their designs’ iconic shape and construction.

One of our qualms with this laptop backpack is the strap adjustment system and materials. With a little more padding on the straps and a way to tuck the dangling adjustment straps, in a way similar to the Topo Designs Daypack Tech , the Kånken 17″ Pack would be pretty much perfect. Even with these minor flaws, this pack was one of our all-time favorites in this guide.

Whether you’re a college student looking for a fashion-forward laptop backpack or an on-the-move graphic designer, be sure to check out the Fjällräven Kånken 17″ Laptop Pack . Between its large storage space and padded computer compartment, this backpack is a fantastic choice for all users.

Everlane ReNew Transit Backpack

  • Dimensions 17.5 x 7.25 x 12 in.
  • Capacity 27L
  • Laptop compartment size 15 in.
  • Best use Travel

The Best Laptop Backpacks of 2024

  • Minimalist design with plenty of storage space
  • Attaches to luggage handle for easy travel
  • Separate zippered laptop compartment
  • Protective foam not thick
  • Water bottle side pocket does not fit larger bottles
  • Top storage panel only secures down via small magnets

With a minimalist design and four zippered pockets, the Everlane ReNew Transit Backpack ($95) is a fantastic travel-friendly option at less than a hundred bucks. With a separate zippered compartment for your laptop, you can keep your computer protected from any spills or other gear you may have in the main storage area.

If you’re an environmentally conscious person, you can feel good about purchasing the ReNew Transit since it’s made from 100% recycled polyester that’s been treated with a water-resistant finish. Our tester even poured a glass of water onto this pack and it beaded right off. Furthermore, this backpack was manufactured with Bluesign-approved dyes, which are better for workers and the environment.

Our tester was impressed by how travel-friendly this pack is. The back panel laptop compartment keeps the user’s computer safe from any potential pickpockets and the luggage strap makes it easy to attach to the handle of a roller suitcase to save your back any unnecessary aches. With a higher storage capacity like the Osprey Ozone , at 32 liters, you can store enough clothes and supplies needed for a weekend trip away while also being able to fit your computer easily.

While the Everlane ReNew Transit is superb for travel, keep in mind that the padding for the laptop compartment is minimal so you’ll want to be careful maneuvering this pack around. When dropping this pack off a table with an old computer inside of it, we found that the padding just was only slightly sufficient enough to protect it. We would opt for pairing this backpack with a laptop sleeve or case when in use.

Overall, if you seek a minimalist design that does not sacrifice inner pockets and compartments, be sure to take a look at the Everlane ReNew Transit Backpack . Its ergonomic design performed well on most fronts and the sleek design is truly timeless.

Patagonia Refugio Daypack 30L

  • Dimensions 19 x 12 x 6.5 in.
  • Weight 1 lb., 12 oz.
  • Capacity 30L
  • Best use Hiking

The Best Laptop Backpacks of 2024

  • Generous storage space
  • Removable laptop sleeve/desk caddy compartment
  • Hydration hanger and pass-through access
  • Lacks structure
  • May not be a professional enough aesthetic for the office

If you’re looking for a laptop backpack that performs well on trail and off, be sure to consider the Refugio Daypack 30L ($129) from Patagonia. Designed for students, outdoorsy folks, and working professionals, this backpack instantly impressed us with its versatile design and applicability. It really does have all the bells and whistles.

With an included removable laptop sleeve that also functions as a desk caddy so you can store all your office supplies, the Refugio pack is highly durable and water-resistant thanks to its 100% recycled polyester makeup with a PFC-Free DWR finish. At 30L, this pack has plenty of room for books, gear, layers, and your computer. Our tester wore this pack while ski touring both in the backcountry and at her local resort. She opted to swap the laptop sleeve for her hydration bladder, and really appreciated the pass-through access point for the hose.

After skinning for miles with this backpack on, her back remained cool with plenty of air regulation thanks to the mesh back panel. Because this backpack lacks stiffness from any internal hard plastic elements, like those in the Mystery Ranch 3 Way 27 Briefcase , it’s super lightweight and easy to toss on and off. This ease was even further evident by the top-loading pocket she filled with granola bars. Being able to grab one of these without having to fully take the pack off was a major plus.

Available in several earth-tone colors, the Refugio has a padded back panel and straps that make it super comfortable to wear while commuting to work or hiking for miles on end. These breathable panels stayed dry and supportive despite a decent amount of weight in our tester’s pack. The outer bungees make for extra storage space if you need to attach a jacket or helmet too.

Even though it is a tad flimsy for a laptop backpack, the Refugio is still a great option for the mid-range price of $125. Like most Patagonia products, it’s a decent investment and will last you a lifetime thanks to their warranty repair program. If you find that this pack has torn or become damaged in use, they should repair or replace it for free or at a low cost.

Whether you’re a hiker looking for a daypack that functions well in the office and out, or a student needing a pack that can hold a lot without sacrificing comfort, the Patagonia Refugio Daypack 30L is a solid pick thanks to its multifaceted design and included accessories.

Mystery Ranch 3 Way 27 Briefcase

  • Dimensions 12 x 17.5 x 11.5 in.
  • Best use Office and travel

The Best Laptop Backpacks of 2024

  • 3 different modes of carry
  • Protective laptop padding
  • Plenty of storage space
  • Shoulder carry strap lacks any padding
  • Strap buckles challenging to open and close
  • Bulky design

If you’re stuck deciding between a backpack, briefcase, or messenger bag, be sure to check out the 3-in-1 Mystery Ranch 3 Way 27 Briefcase ($229). With a simple reconfiguration of the straps, this laptop backpack can transform itself into a backpack or shoulder bag style within seconds, making it perfect for those craving a more versatile and adjustable design.

At 27 liters, the 3 Way 27 Briefcase is spacious enough for a computer, tablet, keyboard, notebooks, and other necessities for the office or classroom. The laptop compartment includes stiff padding, meaning your electronics will stay safe should any undesirable drops or spills occur. Manufactured with Mystery Ranch’s CORDURA fabric, a highly durable and recycled nylon, this backpack can withstand even the most treacherous commutes.

Mystery Ranch calls this pack a “portable office” and we couldn’t agree with that title more. With several organizational storage compartments, you can keep your pens, cables, hard drives, and other supplies in their own spot. If you work on the go, you can use this stiff briefcase as a lap desk thanks to its inner plastic panel. The bag itself opens via side zippers, making it easy to look around for those pesky headphones or pencils that may be at the bottom.

If you tend to fly with a checked bag or carry-on suitcase, be sure to consider this briefcase as your personal item. Because of its versatility as both a briefcase and backpack, you can easily give your back a rest by carrying it with the side handle, or use the backpack straps to throw it on during those quick connections where you need to run. The options are truly endless with this one.

One of our few complaints about the 3 Way Briefcase is the shoulder strap included for the messenger bag configuration. Because it lacks padding, the strap is not super comfortable when in use as it digs into the wearer’s skin. Needing a little bit of elbow grease, the buckles for the shoulder strap are hard to attach and detach. However, we do appreciate the rotating mechanisms on each end of the strap that prevent it from getting twisted when worn.

As a laptop backpack, the 3 Way Briefcase is easy to wear and comfortable when on. We appreciate that the backpack straps pack away inconspicuously into the back panel so there’s no risk of losing them or taking up precious storage space. Much like the Evergoods Civic Panel Loader 24L , when you have this bag on in backpack form, remember that it is side panel loading — so double-check that all the YKK zippers and buckles are closed up so that nothing comes tumbling out.

Overall, the Mystery Ranch 3 Way 27 Briefcase is a fantastic choice for those needing an EDC laptop backpack that triples as both a messenger bag and briefcase. With its internal organization and durable materials, this pack is ideal for those needing a daily office companion or adjunct travel bag.

Topo Designs Daypack Tech

  • Dimensions 11 x 19 x 5 in.
  • Weight 1 lb., 9.6 oz.
  • Capacity 21L
  • Best use Travel and daily use

The Best Laptop Backpacks of 2024

  • Well-padded external laptop compartment
  • Simple design with durable materials
  • Neon inside liner makes it easy to find gear or supplies
  • Lack of internal organization
  • Less pockets than other options

Topo Designs has been making superb backpacks and luggage since 2008 and the Daypack Tech ($129) is no exception. This simple yet effective design is great for students or working professionals seeking a laptop backpack that is protective and applicable to any environment. With the ‘RidgeBack’ molded back panel, this backpack is super comfortable while on and can fit a decent amount of books, chargers, and other workplace accessories.

The main compartment of this backpack is pretty generous in terms of space. We found that it was best suited for books and notebooks, but not anything super bulky like a big binder. The external laptop compartment really can only fit smaller 15-inch computers that are not thick, so anything bigger would have to go in the thinner sleeve in the main compartment. We tried to fit an older, thicker 15-inch MacBook in there, and it simply wouldn’t budge.

Like other Topo products, the Daypack Tech is available in a handful of nature-inspired, subtle colors. However, all of the models are designed with an inner neon lining that naturally keeps the interior of the pack well-lit so you can easily find your notebooks, pencils, and other supplies that may be buried in the bottom. The external laptop sleeve on the back panel kept our computer separate and protected from the other objects we put in this backpack.

And while this pack is fantastic for students who have numerous textbooks and notebooks, we would not recommend it for any tech-oriented working professionals. With the lack of internal storage pockets, there is no secure place to store SD cards, cords, or hard drives while commuting. Also, the canvas-like fabric seems to be a total magnet for dog hair, so pet owners be wary.

Much like the Everlane ReNew Transit Backpack, the Topo Designs Daypack Tech , is a minimally designed pack for folks needing a simple yet durable solution to store their computers and other office necessities. Overall, this backpack keeps things simple and safely stored.

Osprey Ozone Laptop Backpack

  • Dimensions 19.2 x 13.3 x 11 in.
  • Capacity 28L
  • Laptop compartment size 16 in.
  • Best use School, travel, outdoor

The Best Laptop Backpacks of 2024

  • 28 liters provides generous storage space
  • Multi-compartment and several pockets provide organization
  • Lightweight frame and materials
  • Would benefit from a open front panel loading system
  • Zippers prone to grabbing
  • Slightly cumbersome design

With a streamlined design, large storage compartments, and an outdoor aesthetic, the Osprey Ozone Laptop Backpack ($170) is a fantastic option for those needing to maximize space and functionality in a pack.

Mostly known for their high-performance hiking and backpacking packs, Osprey also soars (pun intended) in the EDC bag and luggage department as well. The Ozone is no exception to this rule thanks to its ultralight materials and travel-friendly tech.

Unlike any of the other laptop backpacks we’ve tested, this pack has an included Travel Sentry identification tag, or TSID , on the handle that can be scanned should your backpack become lost and found by someone else. This isn’t where the travel-friendliness of this pack stops.

The Ozone is lined with an ultrasoft, bright gray fabric that won’t scratch your sunglasses or make it hard to navigate when digging around in its interior. Also, there is a secret pocket located on the back panel so you can safely store flat high-risk items like a passport, cash, and other documents.

The harness system on the Ozone is some of the best we tested in terms of comfort and breathability. The mesh panels are moisture-wicking, and the backpack itself sits at a comfortable, high spot on the user’s back. The sternum strap helps bring much of the weight forward, lessening pressure on the shoulders, but we think this backpack would benefit from a hip buckle if it’s packed super heavily.

While this backpack operates fantastically in an office environment or while traveling, we really wish it had a fully openable compartment much like the Evergoods Civic Panel Loader 24L . It can fit plenty of packing cubes and toiletries, but being able to flatly organize them while packing would make it that much better.

Overall, if you pack a heavy load for the office or need something perfect for travel, especially international, then take a gander at the Osprey Ozone Laptop Backpack for its multi-compartment organization and security accessories.

The North Face Router Backpack

  • Dimensions 12.5 x 9 x 21 in.
  • Weight 2 lbs., 2.4 oz.
  • Capacity 40L

The Best Laptop Backpacks of 2024

  • 40L provides plenty of storage space
  • Over 5 different pockets that can be used for organization
  • Microfiber lining protects screens and glasses against scratches
  • Some pockets open from the bottom, making objects prone to falling out
  • Main shoulder straps attach to the backpack with weaker stitching and materials
  • Not ideal for folks with petite frames or shorter torsos

When it comes to searching for a laptop backpack that can both carry your computer and a plethora of layers, snacks, bottles, and more, be sure to check out The North Face Router Backpack ($159) for its high carrying capacity and organizational system.

Best used in traveling, school, or commuting environments, the Router has two main compartments and several inner/exterior organizational pockets. We super appreciate that this laptop backpack has a microfiber-lined tablet sleeve and pockets so your screens and sunglasses don’t get scratched when inside.

The main harness and back panel of The North Face Router is designed with the FlexVent suspension system, which is approved by the American Chiropractic Association for its rounded back panel, stiff and breathable padding, and grid-like structure.

This backpack was pretty comfortable on our tester’s back, but due to its length, it would be best worn on someone with a longer torso. While the main curved portion of the back panel is highly supportive, the top and bottom ends put some unideal pressure points on the upper hip and mid-neck area.

While it is durably made and decently spacious, the Router is heavier than other laptop backpacks we tested during this buyer’s guide build. There are quite a few buckles, materials, and features on this pack that certainly weigh it down a bit. However, our tester was able to fit a plethora of things in here like notebooks, a laptop, a large novel, headphones, a water bottle, and more.

The internal pockets are fantastic for safely stowing small gear like hard drives, chargers, pens, and keys. Be warned, that some of the pockets are situated upside down, so if you forget to zip them up, things will inevitably fall out.

Much like the Patagonia Refugio Daypack 30L , the Router has a noticeable outdoor aesthetic and can be used both in the office and on the trail. With two water bottle holders and plenty of straps to clip gear to, this backpack is another great choice for those seeking more versatility in a laptop pack.

Overall, if you don’t want to completely break the bank on a backpack and are seeking something with plenty of bells and whistles, be sure to consider the Router Backpack for its 40L carrying capacity, multiple carry handles, and carry-on compliance.

Able Carry Thirteen Daybag

  • Dimensions 17.7 x 10.6 x 6.7 in.
  • Weight 1 lb., 8 oz.
  • Capacity 13L
  • Laptop compartment size 14 in.
  • Best use Short commutes, crowded bus rides

The Best Laptop Backpacks of 2024

  • Compact silhouette is barely noticeable on your back
  • Impressive organization in a 13L bag
  • Available in both Cordura nylon or X-Pac
  • Stealth pocket behind the back panel
  • Light interior color aids in finding small goods
  • Laptop sleeve only fits computers up to 14"
  • Bit pricey for such a small bag

Small but mighty, the Able Carry Thirteen Daybag ($149) is true to its name and offers up a compact 13 liters of space for those who are on the minimalism kick, or just simply don’t need to tote around a lot of remote worker kit. In practice, we found this pack well suited to bumping around in crowded cities where a large laptop backpack would otherwise be a nuisance. If you’re just jetting out to the local coffee shop with your laptop and charger in tow, the Thirteen Daybag is primed for it.

To be sure, there’s a broad schism between the Thirteen and our best budget and similarly compact pick, the Lenovo B210 (a $127 gap, to be exact) — but those extra bills are all tucked into the fit and finish on the Able Carry pack. Available in both a rugged Cordura nylon or even more rugged X-Pac (for an extra $30), the Thirteen makes use of materials on par with brands like Evergoods and is sewn with an attention to detail that’s obvious even from across the room.

At 13 liters, there’s not much space to work with, but the pack breaks it up smartly. A 14″ laptop sleeve is flanked by an additional sleeve to stash your tablet or journal, as well as two internal stretch pockets for caching bottles or a compact umbrella. A final zippered accessory pocket has all your small items under control, and the rest of the space is yours to pack as you please. We found we could make a full day on the go working out of the Thirteen, with nothing left on the sidelines.

The exterior of the pack has some smart features built into it. A hidden pocket behind the back panel is perfect for quickly stashing your phone and going hands-free, while the card slots in the shoulder straps keep your plastic close at hand. At such a small capacity, we didn’t expect much padding, but Able Carry again over-performs and uses a high-quality closed cell foam in the straps and back panel that meant even to-the-brim carries went easy.

At $150, the weight-to-capacity ratio on the Able Carry Thirteen Daybag might seem upside down at first, but that’s before you realize what a nice laptop pack this is. For those who simply don’t need a 30-liter pack for their 15-minute commute, the Thirteen is a style-forward and tough pack that will get the job done, and look good doing it.

Best Laptop Backpacks — How We Tested

Laptop Backpacks Comparison Chart

How we tested laptop backpacks.

Stock full of writers who frequent local coffee shops, office spaces, and outdoor vistas, GearJunkie understands the importance of finding that ideal laptop backpack that can provide space, back support, and technology protection. We’ve rounded up what we think are the leading EDC, or “everyday carry”, backpacks of the industry. As new products hit the market or catch our eye, we will continue to test and update this guide.

As a full-time graphic designer, freelance photographer, and writer, lead tester Meghan LaHatte is no stranger to the world of laptop backpacks. Due to her work at a local newspaper and for GearJunkie, she is constantly on the move between her home desk, office in Aspen, and local coffee shops. Meghan certainly did not take the genesis of this buyer’s guide lightly as she put each of these backpacks through the wringer for testing.

The most important aspect of these laptop backpacks we tested was their protection factor and durability. When carefully examining each pack, Meghan noted how thick the padding was where a computer was meant to be stored. Was it less than an inch, thicker than an inch, or somewhere in between? She also examined the materials in which the padding was made — typically foam, plastic, or a combination of the two. After noting the quality of the padding, Meghan literally threw the backpacks. Yep, you read that right.

To trigger what would be an “oopsy” moment like accidentally nudging the backpack off a desk or an unideal strap failure, she placed an old, non-functioning laptop in each backpack before tossing it across her apartment. (She would like to sincerely apologize to her downstairs neighbors for this stage in the testing process).

Since the laptop was completely dead, she based the protection factor on each sound the packs made when they hit the ground. For example, if the backpack made a dull thud rather than a sharp thunk , this meant that the backpack was doing a superb job at protecting the computer since the sound was absorbed.

Best Laptop Backpacks — On Street

For water resistance, Meghan tested this by placing each backpack that was advertised as waterproof or coated with a DWR (durable water-resistant finish) under a running sink. She noted if the water beaded off, was absorbed, or stained. This is an important attribute to consider especially if you live in a moisture-prone climate like a coastal city or snowy ski town. Since Meghan lives just outside of Aspen, Colorado, she was able to wear these backpacks in both snow and shine.

The next factor she felt significantly mattered in testing was comfort. If you’re going to be commuting via bike or foot, you’re going to want a backpack that is comfortable and supportive. Whereas, if you’re traveling frequently for work or have heavier gear, you’ll want a laptop backpack with streamlined, adjustable straps and a back panel made to conform to your torso.

The testing process for scoring the comfortability of these laptop backpacks was pretty simple. Meghan loaded up each backpack with a significant amount of gear and then walked at least a consecutive two miles with one on. During this, she carefully noted any pressure points she felt, the usefulness of supporting straps at the chest or waist, and generally how her back and shoulders felt throughout the trek.

The fourth and final factor Meghan heavily tested was the internal organization and pocket systems for each laptop backpack. When you’re using a laptop backpack in the office, travel, or educational environments, it is important to consider how well you can store your equipment, accessories, bottles, and other supplies.

To assess this, Meghan counted each pocket and how well it fit glasses, hard drives, wires, or pencils. Another aspect she considered was pocket placement and direction. Were the pockets in easy-to-reach areas? Were they lined with a certain material? This internal organization varied heavily between each pack, but certainly affected how they performed in her multifaceted testing process.

Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose a Laptop Backpack

Best Laptop Backpacks — Comparison

In today’s modern world where most professional workers operate from a computer, it can be overwhelming to swim through the massive ocean that is the laptop backpack market. Now that most employees are returning to the office, there’s certainly a push to find a laptop backpack conducive to commuting, travel, and most workplace environments.

Be sure to read through our buyer’s guide to discern what makes a laptop backpack a laptop backpack and all the bells and whistles that typically come with one. Some of these factors can be protection ability, internal organization, purpose of use, price, and more. Hopefully, by the time you’ve reached the end of the road on this guide, you’ve found that laptop backpack that is your own pièce de résistance .

What Is a Laptop Backpack?

An EDC, or “everyday carry,” laptop backpack is an investment one makes for the health of not only their computer, but also their back and shoulders. A laptop backpack will always have a padded sleeve or compartment where you can safely stow a computer or tablet, a thick back panel that increases that protection, and a supportive harness system so you can comfortably wear it on commutes and travel days.

When shopping for a laptop backpack, be sure to understand how it differs from, let’s say, an ultralight hiking backpack or a backpacking backpack . Outdoor-oriented backpacks tend to have higher-liter carrying capacities and accessories meant for attaching gear like sleeping pads, ropes, tents, etc. While there can sometimes be an overlap of the two, a laptop backpack will always have a compartment meant for protecting a computer. Laptop backpacks will also typically be smaller than backpacking packs as they are more conducive to fitting smaller gear like office supplies, notebooks, and other technology.

When it comes to commuting between the home and office, or flying across the country, laptop backpacks are our favorite way to carry our mobile workspaces. Sure, you can use a tote bag or briefcase, but a backpack will leave your hands empty and give you the peace of mind that your stuff is super safe.

Laptop Backpack User Profiles

Best Laptop Backpacks — Users

The Daily Commuter: If you’re someone who opts for biking, walking, or bussing to work, you’ll want a laptop backpack that is comfortable, lightweight, and supportive. The last thing anyone wants on that long trek to work are any aches or pains from an ill-fitting backpack or lack of breathability. Backpacks made with supportive harnesses that include a chest or hip strap to help shift weight forward are best for folks who are walking, running, or biking to the office. Also: laptop backpacks with reflective materials certainly excel for these people, especially if you’re heading home after the sun has gone down.

For commuters and hikers alike, we recommend the Patagonia Refugio Daypack 30L for its lightweight and breathable design and the TimBuk2 Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe for its city-like aesthetic with reflective tape for increased visibility. Both of these laptop backpacks excelled during our long walking tests and stayed supportive without compromising comfort or style.

The Frequent Flier: Whether you’re flying internationally or traveling across the states, finding a laptop backpack that is advantageous to travel environments is key. When you’re on and off airplanes, there can be a lot of transferring your backpack from the overhead bin, under a seat, to TSA shifting it around during their screening processes. For these reasons and more, it is important to get a laptop backpack with a higher protection factor and easy access panels. These can include thicker back padding, front-loading panels, and secure pockets for important documents like passports and tickets.

You’ll also want a backpack with a higher storage capacity should you need to throw some clothes or toiletries in there. Our choices for the best travel-friendly laptop packs are the Evergoods Civic Panel Loader 24L for its front panel loading system with additional side padding and the Everlane ReNew Transit Backpack for its higher-liter storage and streamlined design. Both of these laptop backpacks perform well as a personal item on a longer journey or as an overnight bag for a weekend trip.

Best Laptop Backpacks — Travel

The Minimalist: We get it — sometimes you just don’t need all the bells and whistles these laptop backpacks come with. Extra buckles, straps, and pockets can oftentimes make a computer bag too cumbersome and add to its overall weight. Having these extra accessories can cost you as well since typically more materials = an increased retail price.

For those wanting a simple aesthetic without much of a cost at all, we recommend the Lenovo Laptop Backpack B210 for its super simple style and minimal design. Since it does not have any extra straps or many pockets, this backpack remains lightweight but is best suited for folks who don’t have much of a commute to work. Another minimal design we appreciate is the Topo Designs Daypack Tech which has a large exterior pocket and bright interior that makes it easy to find and organize items within. The monochrome exterior looks slick and isn’t as flashy as some of the other options listed.

The Student: Whether you’re just getting a start on your college career or navigating through those formative high school years, you’ll want a supportive laptop backpack that can provide enough space for books, binders, and other school supplies. Because you’re in school, you are probably ballin’ on a budget, so we understand how important it is to find a pack that won’t empty your wallet without sacrificing precious packing space. Be sure to consider backpacks with extra supportive harness systems since you’ll be carrying more weight thanks to those textbooks.

Best Laptop Backpacks — Students

Our picks for all sorts of students — high school, college, medical, you name it — are the Mystery Ranch 3 Way 27 Briefcase and Fjällräven Kånken 17″ Laptop Pack . We love the Mystery Ranch 3 Way Briefcase for its versatility and organization system that can fit all sorts of school supplies like pencils, erasers, flash drives, and notebooks.

It is easily carried from class to class thanks to its multiple handles. The thick adjustable straps are super supportive as well. The Kånken got more style points from us than anything, but still can fit so much stuff. This vintage-style bag is great for younger folks who want a little more swagger in a laptop backpack.

Laptop Protection

Perhaps the most important attribute of a laptop backpack is its protection factor. Simply put, a laptop backpack’s protection factor relates to its ability to protect the given technology inside, whether that is a computer, tablet, keyboard, or a combination of the three. This is executed through the materials, padding, and anatomy of the laptop backpack itself.

Much like knee pads when you’re skateboarding, the protective padding of a laptop is designed to absorb shock and thus protect what’s inside from damage due to impact. This padding can take many different shapes and placements throughout your backpack. It also can contribute to the pack’s supportive position on your back.

As we mentioned earlier, we heavily tested these packs’ abilities to protect a computer by throwing them against the ground of our lead tester’s apartment. Depending on how loud each thud of the backpack hitting the ground was, we were able to discern how well it protected what was inside. We also periodically examined the inside computer for any cosmetic damages after each test.

Access Points

Typically, the laptop compartment of a backpack is located in the panel closest to the wearer’s back, where it will have the most support and remain secure. This location prevents it from jostling around too much and increases back stability.

Best Laptop Backpacks — Access

Now where laptop backpacks differ on this element are the actual access points. Some unzip from the top where you can slide in your computer vertically, while others slide in horizontally on the left or right side of the pack. This is totally up to personal preference, but we found that the side panel loading is more conducive to folks wanting a more secure spot for their computer, away from the rest of the items they may have packed in their bag already.

Side panel loading systems, like in the Evergoods Civic Panel Loader 24L and Everlane ReNew Transit Backpack , will always be zippered, whereas some top-loading systems may have an internal sleeve that is not zippered for your laptop. This is evident in packs like the Topo Designs Daypack Tech and The North Face Router Backpack .

In terms of design, some laptop backpacks are made with padding throughout, on the main sleeve compartment, the sides, or all three. A well-made laptop backpack will accommodate your computer’s size and protect it from those inevitable drops and spills. This padding is generally made from thick foam and plastic elements that provide structure and shielding.

Sometimes these protective elements are stiff enough that the backpack can stand on its own, thus preventing your computer from toppling over within. This was evident when the Mystery Ranch 3 Way 27 Briefcase was in its briefcase form.

Anatomically, the padding of a laptop backpack should be located throughout the bag, but it is usually thickest on the back panel and inside the actual sleeve. We were impressed by the laptop backpacks that had thicker padding on the harness straps.

Not only do these thicker straps make the pack more comfortable when on, but they also soften any blows to your computer should the backpack tip over onto the ground. Furthermore, backpacks with extra padding on their sides help protect them when you’re swinging them on and off throughout the day.

Best Laptop Backpacks — Padding

Winning our overall award for this buyer’s guide, the Evergoods Civic Panel Loader 24L simply took the cake for its protection factor thanks to its 360-degree stiff padding and durable materials. It truly did pass our drop test with flying colors. Even with its minimal but thick padding, the Lenovo Laptop Backpack B210 did well during this testing portion, despite its uber-low price.

If we didn’t think any of these backpacks were incapable of protecting your precious tech, they simply wouldn’t be on the list. However, we felt that the Everlane ReNew Transit Backpack could benefit from some better laptop protection through increased foam thickness.

Best Laptop Backpacks — Security

If you find yourself traveling a lot or commuting daily to work via foot or bus, you’ll want a laptop backpack with security attributes like hidden pockets, zipper locks, an ID tag, or highly durable materials. A secure laptop backpack will typically be inconspicuous, without having easy-to-access compartments or flashy elements.

Best Laptop Backpacks — Passport Pocket

In terms of laptop and gear security, we were highly impressed with the Osprey Ozone Laptop Backpack for its hidden passport pocket located on the unexposed back panel, digital ID tag, and overall incognito design.

The zippers themselves blend well into the bag, making it harder for someone to suddenly open them while you aren’t looking. If you find yourself in high-traffic environments like trains, airports, or busy streets, definitely try out this backpack for its overall security factor.

The capacity of a laptop backpack refers to the amount of space available inside the pack for accommodating items like computers, books, layers, tablets, and more. These measurements encompass the storage space of all the compartments and pockets within the backpack.

By now, you’ve probably noticed that each laptop backpack has a storage capacity attached to it in the form of liters. This measurement can also be calculated in cubic inches, but for all intents and purposes, we will be discussing volume in the form of liters.

Beat Laptop Backpacks — Capacity

To test out the capacity of each backpack, our lead tester gathered all of her work necessities that she typically packs when she heads to the office, library, or coffee shop on any given day. This took the form of a 15-inch laptop, bulky headphones, a notebook, a novel, pens, chargers, and a keyboard.

She also traveled with some of the backpacks for both week-long and weekend excursions via car and plane. This loadout usually included two luggage cubes, a toiletry bag, a camera cube, her laptop, a book, and other small necessities.

Overall, almost every backpack suited her needs during this testing iteration, but some certainly stuck out more than others. As a personal item during a flight, the 20L Fjällräven Kånken 17″ Laptop Pack fit Meghan’s full remote working setup which included her computer, a camera, hard drives, a 400-page novel, over-the-ear headphones, and her keyboard. Its cubic shape was perfect for modularly stowing her stuff and it had zero issues sliding under the seat in front of her on the plane.

For a longer trip away for a wedding, Meghan used the 28L Osprey Ozone Laptop Backpack in which she packed two clothing cubes , a makeup bag, a toiletry bag, her work-from-home setup, and some other small necessities like a wallet, wires, and a curling iron. The larger size of this pack was perfect for accommodating enough of her clothes and supplies without needing to bring a second bag.

Best Laptop Backpacks — Small Capacity

It can be confusing discerning between liter counts on laptop backpacks so here is a helpful guide to assist you in crunching the numbers:

Small Capacity (Below 20L)

On average, most of the laptop backpacks in this guide are around 20 liters. And while there are backpacks listed below 20L, it is still important to consider how this size differs from larger sizes.

  • Smaller capacity backpacks like the Able Carry Thirteen Daybag are ideal for shorter trips and commutes since they do not boast as much space.
  • Backpacks with this capacity will typically only hold a small computer or tablet, maybe a book or two, and some other small layers and supplies.
  • Small-capacity backpacks are more lightweight and easy to carry.

Medium Capacity (20L to 30L)

This is the threshold where most of these laptop backpacks fall since this storage capacity is a great sweet spot for working professionals who need just enough space for their office needs, without being too cumbersome or bulky.

Packs like the Evergoods Civic Panel Loader 24L , Lenovo Laptop Backpack B210 , TimBuk2 Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe , Fjällräven Kånken 17″ Laptop Pack , Everlane ReNew Transit Backpack , Mystery Ranch 3 Way 27 Briefcase , Topo Designs Daypack Tech , and Osprey Ozone fall into this storage capacity.

  • Sufficient for everyday use or short weekend trips out of town.
  • Offers a superb balance between compactness and being able to carry all the necessities.
  • Typically can fit a computer, tablet, multiple books, clothes, and other small supplies like chargers, SD cards, sunglasses, and more.

Large Capacity (30L and Above)

At the more robust end of the storage capacity spectrum are laptop backpacks made with over 30 liters of storage space. Because laptop backpacks are designed for more temporary environments like offices, libraries, and coffee shops, you won’t typically see them in higher capacity options since bigger packs are overall heavier and bulkier.

However, packs like the North Face Router , which measures in at a whopping 40 liters, are an exception to this rule. Here are a few reasons you may want to consider a large-capacity laptop backpack:

  • You’re a seasoned traveler who craves versatility in a laptop backpack that will afford you a week’s worth of clothing and supplies.
  • A large-capacity laptop backpack will fit not only a computer and other gadgets, but also luggage cubes, a toiletry bag, a jacket, a water bottle, and other luxuries.
  • If you’re someone with a larger frame, you can rock a higher capacity bag since it will be more conducive to your own proportions and thus give you ample back support.

In conclusion, capacity is totally up to your own personal preference and needs. Typically, a higher capacity will contribute to the overall size and weight of the backpack, so if you are a commuter by foot, you may want something with a smaller capacity. On the other hand, if you’re a photographer or student needing to max out storage space for gear and books, you can probably go with something at or above average on the liter count.

Laptop Compartment Size

Best Laptop Backpacks — Laptop Sleeve

When considering the capacity of your ideal laptop backpack, be sure to consider the size of its given laptop compartment. Most of the laptop backpacks we listed fall at the 17-inch laptop mark, but some can only accommodate a 15-inch model or less.

Small Compartments (15 in. or Less):

  • Typically, these laptop backpacks have a smaller liter count.
  • Best for small computers or tablets like the MacBook Air, iPad, HP Chromebook, or Kindle.
  • Usually have less robust padding.

Medium Compartments (15 in. to 17 in.):

  • The most common laptop compartment size.
  • Can accommodate computers like the MacBook Pro, HP ProBook, multimedia PC laptops, and large tablets.
  • Best for protecting laptops at this size as anything significantly smaller will jostle around in the compartment.

Large Compartments (17 in. and Above):

  • Usually included in larger-liter capacity backpacks meant for travel.
  • Best for large modular setups that include gaming laptops, small monitors, and more portable workstations.
  • Padding should be generous to accommodate the large-sized tech.

You should base your laptop compartment size on the size of your given computer. You’ll want your laptop to fit in the sleeve snugly. If your computer is too big for the compartment size, its protection will be compromised, especially if the backpack can’t be zipped up all the way.

On the other hand, if your laptop is too small, it may shift around too much inside the backpack and thus damage itself or other tech you may have stored adjacent to it.

In terms of laptop compartment size and padding, we loved the TimBuk2 Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe for its optional padded compartment and inner sleeve. It can accommodate a 17-inch computer and a tablet quite securely with plenty of room to spare.

Organization

Whether you’re headed to class, the office, or on a work trip, organization is key to optimizing the space of your backpack and keeping your valuables in easy-to-find places. Within laptop backpacks, organization can take the form of pockets, sleeves, removable cases, and exterior bungees.

The most common form of organization with laptop backpacks is through compartments. Most backpacks have a laptop compartment, a main compartment, and a smaller exterior compartment. For example, The North Face Router Backpack has this exact setup with a fleece-lined computer compartment, a middle open space, and a smaller exterior area.

We think that when it comes to compartment amount, three is the magic number. This gives you enough customization with your packing methods, without being too overwhelming or complex. Too few compartments and you can’t separate your valuables, but too many compartments will lead to the overall space in which the bag takes up and it requires more work to dig around items.

Best Laptop Backpacks — Organization

When it comes to organization, especially for smaller items like SD cards, batteries, chargers, and more, pockets will be your best friend. The best laptop backpacks will have a balance of interior and exterior pockets. We appreciate backpacks that have mesh interior pockets, so you can easily see what you have stowed. Exterior pockets that are lined with fleece or microfiber are a great spot to store your glasses or phone, thanks to their anti-scratch properties.

We certainly prefer zippered pockets to not, but interior pockets don’t absolutely require zipper access and can be useful when you need to grab something in a pinch. The pocket system of the Mystery Ranch 3 Way 27 Briefcase definitely impressed us with its multi-purpose use and varying material application.

Some organizational elements take the form of removable accessories, like in the Patagonia Refugio Daypack 30L . This backpack stands out from the rest as it includes a removable desk caddy that also functions as a padded laptop sleeve. This is great for mobile workers who need to take their desk space with them everywhere.

This customization is also great for switching the backpack from its professional mode to its outdoor iteration. For example, the desk caddy can easily be swapped for a water bladder thanks to the hydration hanger and pass-through access. There’s even an exterior bungee cord for attaching items you may want to grab more quickly or frequently.

Best Laptop Backpacks — Storage Pockets

When considering which laptop backpack might be right for you, don’t hesitate to splurge a little more on a pack that has the organization system you require. It will help make your workday much more productive and much less stressful.

Materials and Durability

Up there with laptop protection, the materials and durability are both highly important to the overall functionality of your backpack. From the exterior, back panel, zippers, and interiors, materials can make or break what is a good and reliable laptop backpack. Sometimes these textiles are manufactured with recycled materials, waterproof/resistant finishes, reflective elements, and more.

Exterior backpack materials are typically made with nylon, polyester, canvas, vinyl, and or a combination of textiles. These fabrics have the important job of protecting your computer and other things from wear and tear, water, spilled coffee, and other unideal accidents. Here is how a few of those materials work to do this and some product examples:

Best Laptop Backpacks — Materials

Nylon-constructed laptop backpacks are typically lighter, water-resistant, and durable against daily use. Scientifically speaking, nylon is a silk-like thermoplastic constructed from petroleum, so it can be easily combined with other materials and coating to increase its water-resistant performance and abrasiveness. Nylon can also be easily made into an array of different colors and hues.

The Evergoods Civic Panel Loader 24L is constructed with an 840D ballistic nylon that is extremely durable against drops, scrapes, and overall daily use. This nylon is also treated with a water-repellent finish and the micro-woven fabric itself is dust-resistant too.

If you’re seeking a nylon-based backpack that does not have a major environmental impact, be sure to consider a pack like the Mystery Ranch 3 Way 27 Briefcase for its 500D recycled CORDURA re/cor nylon, another impressive textile made from sustainable materials.

Another highly common textile, polyester is found in several of our listed backpack options. It is a synthetic textile made of plastic polymers made from petroleum. Similar to nylon, polyester is lightweight, typically water-resistant, and easy to clean.

However, its durability is not as impressive as nylon and may wear away just a hair faster. To help increase a polyester’s abrasiveness, companies will often coat them with finishes like a durable water repellent (DWR).

Best Laptop Backpacks — Polyester

Made with 100% recycled polyester, the Everlane ReNew Transit Backpack was one of our favorite constructed backpacks of this material. It has a canvas-like aesthetic and doesn’t seem to attract much dirt or dust. The Patagonia Refugio Daypack 30L was another fantastic polyester option, and the DWR finish helped repel any moisture from snow during a long day at the skin track.

Interior Materials

While exterior textiles and design are highly important to a laptop backpack’s overall protection and durability, don’t overlook the interior materials either. Typically, computer pack interiors are constructed with softer fabrics like microfiber or nylon that make for a scratch-free house for your tech to sit in.

These non-abrasive fabrics keep your items away from dust and become damaged if exposed to dirt that could scratch your otherwise pristine screens. The ultrasoft microfiber interior of the laptop compartment and glasses pocket of the The North Face Router Backpack was phenomenal at protecting our tester’s sunglasses and iPad from any devastating scratch exposure.

Best Laptop Backpacks — Interior Materials

One other thing to note about interior laptop backpack fabrics is the dye used. We appreciate backpacks that are manufactured with brighter colors like white, gray, and yellow. This makes your stuff so much easier to find, especially in a dimly lit coffee shop or under the seat in front of you on an airplane.

The neon interior found on most Topo Designs backpacks and luggage is one of our favorite examples of this application. This is just color theory plain and simple — brighter colored objects reflect light better than those of darker hues like black or blue.

Overall, if your laptop backpack is constructed with industry-standard materials and coatings, it should be great in keeping your stuff safe from exposure to the elements, expected wear and tear, and unideal tumbles. It should also have interior textiles that are brightly colored, softer than the exterior, and made to withstand a pencil poking through it.

Carry Options and Styles

Laptop backpacks typically take the form of, well, backpacks. However, sometimes laptop backpacks can be a satchel or briefcase. Whether you want a backpack style or messenger bag is completely up to personal preference and what best suits your needs.

We have found that backpacks are the most convenient when it comes to longer commutes, travel days, and trudges across campus. Briefcases and messenger bags are superb for office environments where you need to have documents, devices, or pens quickly at hand. They also tend to be a little more professional looking if your workplace requires more than just business casual.

If you truly can’t decide between a laptop backpack, messenger bag, or briefcase, be sure to consider the Mystery Ranch 3 Way 27 Briefcase for its versatility as all three. It is easy to configure this laptop backpack into its three modes and it provides plenty of storage thanks to its cubic design.

Best Laptop Backpacks — Carry Style

Laptop backpacks can also have various carry handles so you don’t only have to transport them on your back. All the laptop backpacks listed have a convenient handle for carrying from the top. This handle makes it easy to maneuver your backpack in smaller spaces like airplanes, trains, and buses.

This is also great for when you want to shift your pack over a few feet or inches, but don’t want to have to grab the larger shoulder strap. The reinforced handle on the Osprey Ozone was one of our favorites right out of the gate for its soft and seemingly inconspicuous design.

Laptop backpacks can also have handles located on their sides as well. Much like the top handle, these carry styles are great for quickly moving your backpack or just taking some of the weight off your shoulders briefly. They also help when sliding your backpack into an airplane’s overhead bin or cubby at the gym.

We thought the side handle on the Evergoods Civic Panel Loader 24L should be applied to most laptop backpack options on the market. It not only looks sleek, but also adds to the overall convenience of the pack itself.

For more travel-savvy folks that have roller suitcases, you may want to opt for backpacks like the Everlane ReNew Transit Backpack or TimBuk2 Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe for their luggage straps located on the back panel. They simply slide over the metal roller handle and securely sit on top of the suitcase itself. These are useful when you’re shuffling through the terminal and want to give your back a breather.

Travel backpacks such as these have a certain minimalistic aesthetic that blends in well with most environments, making them more conducive to high-traffic areas where you don’t want to look too flashy or out of place.

Whether you want a briefcase or a backpack, be sure to try on the harness to make sure it’s a good fit. If you’re commuting by foot to work, you really should opt for a backpack style that will take the weight out of your hands to leave them open for your phone or much-needed coffee. If you have a car and don’t require much walking for work or school, then a messenger bag or briefcase would probably suit you just fine.

A factor that you definitely shouldn’t ignore or take lightly when it comes to laptop backpacks is price. Whether you’re on a tight budget or have a few extra bucks to spend, these laptop backpacks will definitely suit your needs for school, the office, or travel.

Best Laptop Backpacks — Price

The price of a laptop backpack is typically based on its overall material makeup, design, brand, and size. We have found that backpacks with inexpensive price tags function well, but lack the added organization, protection, and durability that you would find in more pricey options. These pricier options tend to have reinforced zippers, security pockets, modular designs, and heightened longevity, thanks to better craftsmanship and textiles.

On the lowest end of the price spectrum is the Lenovo Laptop Backpack B210 at $15. While it has a good computer protection factor, it doesn’t boast much organization or durability. But for less than 20 bucks, we were pretty impressed by it. If you still have a little more to spend, then consider the Everlane ReNew Transit Backpack ($95) for its added organization, sleek design, and durable materials.

Jumping over to more mid-range price options at over $100 are options like the Fjällräven Kånken 17″ Laptop Pack ($125), Refugio Daypack 30L ($129), Topo Designs Daypack Tech ($129), Able Carry Thirteen Daybag ($149), The North Face Router Backpack ($159), TimBuk2 Authority Laptop Backpack Deluxe ($159), and Osprey Ozone Laptop Backpack ($170).

These are all fantastic choices for their reinforced padding, removable accessories, adjustability, and heightened durability. For less than $200, any of these backpacks would most likely last you years — if not decades, making them a fantastic investment.

Lastly, at the higher range in price at over $200, are backpacks like the Mystery Ranch 3 Way 27 Briefcase ($229) and Evergoods Civic Panel Loader 24L ($279). For the more expensive cost, these laptop backpacks give you superb protection and overall versatility for their multi-functional designs that perform well in office, travel, and educational environments.

Remember that a laptop backpack is not only an investment in your own shoulder health and overall productivity, but also in your actual computer itself. A laptop backpack’s ability to protect your computer will save you hundreds — if not thousands — of dollars when utilized properly. You won’t be kicking yourself for spending a little extra on a good backpack when you inevitably drop it and it protects your precious technology.

While they can sometimes look highly similar, there is a difference between a laptop backpack and one you would take hiking, backpacking, or just around the city. And really it all boils down to laptop security — a laptop backpack will always have some sort of computer protection factor in the form of a padded, suspended laptop compartment or an inserted sleeve.

Other backpacks are not designed to protect your computer or tablet, but are better suited for just storing gear and clothes. Sure you can throw your laptop in there, but just know that it probably won’t have the proper materials and construction to keep it very safe.

Typically no, your laptop shouldn’t require an additional sleeve or case once it’s in your laptop backpack as long as it has the proper padding to keep it cushioned. However, if you have one on hand already or feel as though your backpack isn’t sufficient enough to keep your laptop safe, it wouldn’t hurt to throw one on. Sometimes these additional cases and sleeves can prohibit your computer from actually fitting in the bag so just keep that in mind.

Best Laptop Backpacks — FAQ

Depending on your needs as a working professional, student, or traveler, you’ll want a laptop backpack that can best store your necessities without compromising space, bulkiness, or comfort. If you have shorter commutes or only need to fit a small computer with a couple of other things, then you can opt for a pack that is 20 liters or less.

If you find yourself wanting to store additional layers, snacks, and gear in your EDC backpack, then consider one in the 20-30L range for its additional space and reinforced support systems. Maybe you’re planning on traveling globally with your computer backpack and need space to fit clothing, toiletries, and souvenirs. If so, then snag one with a liter count that is higher than 30 for the generous amount of space.

A solid backpack is key to a successful trip. Think about it: You can use it as a carry-on, and if you pack light, it'll be the only piece of luggage you bring on a trip. It won't weigh you down as you rush to catch the inter-terminal train at the airport, and it'll look good on you as you stroll the streets of your destination. Find a good travel backpack, and it will serve you for years to come.

There’s a lot to consider when looking for a backpack to take you through all kinds of situations and environments. Waterproof, anti-theft, stylish, lightweight, wheels or no wheels—all things to keep in mind as you shop. To help you make the right choice, we tested 32 carry-on backpacks in our New York testing lab and in the real world. We tested for capacity, design, comfort, durability, and value.

Super durable material

Very comfortable with multiple carry methods

Lighter and more rugged than previous models

Nothing yet

Does the perfect travel backpack exist? We’re not sure, but we can’t think of one that comes closer than the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L. This second version of Cotopaxi’s best-selling backpack is rugged and comfy, has excellent organization capabilities, and is the perfect size to throw in an overhead bin, toss in a vehicle, and huff around from train to hostel.

The pack uses burly TPU-coated 1000-denier polyester and lightweight 840-denier ballistic nylon paneling. It has excellent weight distribution with comfy shoulder and sternum straps and hip belts, or stow the straps and carry the pack with side handles. The inside features multiple pockets of different sizes that we found perfect for separating clean and dirty clothes, electronics, and shoes. Bonus: It comes with a rainfly to protect it from the weather.

Best Overall, Runner-Up

Osprey fairview 40.

Quite spacious while remaining carry-on sized

Keeps belongings secure

Good padding and weight distribution

Osprey’s women-specific Fairview 40 pack impressed our tester with its size, space, and compartments. “This bag has a lot of compartments and a lot of straps to hold everything in place,” our tester reported. Despite the bag fitting a bit large, our tester said it was still very comfortable to wear. Osprey employs its proprietary Lightwire Frame Suspension, which helps spread the weight across the back panel and from the harness to the hip belt.

Despite being a 40-liter pack, it weighs just about 3 pounds, thanks to the lightweight nylon ripstop material and frame. “It did not hurt my back, and I like how most of the weight was shifted to my lower back,” our tester mentioned. Besides the fit, we also appreciated that all straps are stowable, making it easy in case you need to check the bag on a plane (which is possible on smaller planes with this larger-capacity pack). For the men’s version of the same pack, check out the Farpoint 40 .

Capacity: 38 liters (extra-small/small size) | Weight: 3 pounds, 1 ounce | Dimensions: 19.3 x 13.8 x 8 inches | Materials: 210-denier nylon mini hex diamond ripstop and 600-denier packcloth

Best Budget

Vancropak 40l travel backpack.

  • Capacity 4 /5
  • Design 3 /5
  • Comfort 4 /5

Great for a short-to-medium-length trip

Could double as a business travel pack

Feature packed and user friendly

Lacks tech compartment

Cloth material could get dirty easily

This 40-liter pack checks all the boxes, including excellent value. Vancropak says it fits enough for trips between three and seven days, and we’d have to agree. “It fit everything even though I packed quickly and not thoughtfully or strategically,” our tester said. “It’s perfect for a weekend trip when you want to pack extra ‘just in case’ outfits or items. It even expands to provide more room. It has extra pockets, opens like a suitcase, has many different handles, and backpack straps that can be tucked and zipped away.” Compression straps also help shrink the bag back down after being packed.

And if you weren’t convinced yet of its value, it also includes packing cubes. “Its business-casual aesthetic makes it ideal for short business trips, too,” a tester added. One nitpick? There’s no laptop sleeve. But our testers thought the other features—and comfort—more than made up for that slight issue.

Capacity: 40 liters | Weight: 3.98 pounds | Dimensions: 20 x 13.7 x 6.2 inches | Materials: Water-resistant polyester

Asenlin 40L Travel Backpack

Functional straps

Multiple ways to carry

Not too weighty

Our tester didn’t love the style

If you didn’t dig the budget pack above, behold another excellent value travel pack. Like the Vancropak, the Asenlin Travel Backpack also includes three packing cubes. Our testers found they could easily fit everything needed for a weekend trip. They also liked the internal straps for organization and the external straps for compression. “It offers three different carrying methods, which is nice,” the testers reported. “It has a lot of different pockets and storage areas. The bottle holder on the side also unzips to expand, which is a thoughtful addition.”

Our testers liked how comfortable the bag was to wear and that it wasn’t overly heavy (the brand claims it weighs less than 3 pounds). We also believe this could double as a business travel bag.

Capacity: 40 liters | Weight: 2.7 pounds | Dimensions: 18.5 x 12.5 x 9.5 inches | Materials: Water-resistant polyester Oxford cloth

Best for Business Travel

Nomatic travel bag.

  • Comfort 3 /5

Fits about a week’s worth of items

Loads of internal organization

Comes with an additional laundry bag

Uncomfortable to carry at times

Some scuff marks after tossing around

While we certainly love this bag's sleek and simplistic aesthetic, there’s a lot more to it than just looks. It’s durable and water-resistant and has multiple carry options (e.g., duffel and over the shoulders), a separate shoe compartment, lots of tech organization, and a TSA-ready laptop sleeve.

Our testers loved the capacity of this pack. “It easily fit everything on the list with plenty of room to spare,” one tester said. “I think everything you would need for up to a week away would fit easily.” The pronounced rectangular shape of the bag made it extra easy to pack and helped organize folded clothes. “The bag had two different shoe pockets, a laptop sleeve, and many other compartments for both smaller clothing items and even some work supplies,” a tester reported.

The one drawback of this pack was our testers didn’t find it the most comfortable. Specifically, the straps were stiff and dug into one tester’s neck. Overall, though, our testers were very pleased with the pack and thought it was worth the fit, especially for the design and ease of packing.

Capacity: 40 liters | Weight: 3.4 pounds | Dimensions: 19 x 21 x 14 inches | Materials: Not listed

Best Multi-use

Peak design travel backpack 45l.

  • Value 4.5 /5

Excellent capacity

Easy to handle

Thoughtful storage solutions

This 45-liter travel pack from Peak Design debuted at the Outdoor Retailer Expo in 2018 and promptly won many awards. A few years later, it still holds up. Peak Design basically thought of everything when designing this pack. The outside features weatherproof recycled 400-denier nylon canvas and ultralight padded foam. It includes grab handles on each side, stowable hip belts, and a sternum strap. The inside has multiple pockets for organization and loads of room for trips of four days or longer.

Our testers loved the size and the zippers allowing access from four different sides of the bag. “It was super easy to pack, and there were just enough organization solutions to provide options for different packing strategies,” a tester said. “I also loved how many handles there were. A grab handle on all four main sides of the bag makes it super easy to maneuver, especially when putting it in the overhead compartment.”

Testers also liked the sheath built into the pack to stow the hip belt and the small pocket on the belt for stashing quick-grab items like lip balm, keys, or cards. They also enjoyed the water bottle pockets on both sides and the pack's comfort. Oh, and this pack is 100 percent carbon neutral. The only issue they saw was the price—it’s one of the most expensive on this list. But if you can look at this as an investment, the durability suggests it should last for many years. It's certainly carry-on luggage that any travel-savvy guy can appreciate.

Capacity: 45 liters | Weight: 4.5 pounds | Dimensions: 22 x 13 x 9.5 inches | Materials: Weatherproof 100 percent recycled 400-denier nylon canvas external shell and 900-denier waterproof bottom liner

Most Comfortable

Topo designs global travel bag 40l.

Topo Designs

Excellent internal organization

Many different carrying options

Great for long travel days

Could be roomier

If your travel involves carrying your backpack for long periods, we recommend Topo Designs' Global Travel Bag. This super durable pack is also super comfortable with plush and padded shoulder straps and a hip belt. We also love that there are multiple ways to carry this pack with a comfy and padded sling. Its construction includes durable and recycled nylons with a canvas feel. And it meets Fair Wear certification standards, ensuring fair labor practices.

“There are a ton of compartments and pockets, so a lot of options for staying organized with small or loose items in the absence of packing cubes,” one tester said. “I could easily see places to stash cords, travel docs, electronics, water bottles, and more.”

While our testers liked a lot about this bag—including its durability—the comfort won them over. “All the features built into the bag suggest it's intended to create maximum comfort for someone who anticipates carrying the bag for a more extended period of time,” our tester concluded.

Capacity: 40 liters | Weight: 3 pounds, 10.4 ounces | Dimensions: 22.5 x 14 x 7.5 inches | Materials: 1000-denier recycled nylon, 400-denier recycled nylon, 210-denier recycled nylon, 1680-denier recycled ballistic nylon

Best Splurge

Bellroy transit backpack plus.

Flat opening made for easy packing

Comfortable to carry

Long lasting

Minimal internal organization

If you weren't convinced by our business travel pick above, consider this your alternative. This pack's sleek, durable, and comfortable design makes it ideal for business and formal travel. Our testers found it easy to fit enough items for up to three or four days away. Lighter packers could stretch this to five days. The inside is designed more like a typical carry-on pack with one large compartment.

“This bag felt super light on my back and was padded in all the right places,” a tester reported. “It has adjustable sternum and waist straps that you can tuck into the back of the pack when you don't want to use them, which is a genius feature.” Our testers were also impressed with the bag's durability, as it survived being tossed around our lab with zero marks or scuffs.

Samsonite Silhouette 17 Backpack

  • Design 4 /5
  • Durability 4 /5

Suitcase-like opening allows easy access

Eco-friendly materials

Suitable for long travel days

Internal organization may be overcomplicated for some

Launched in 1958, Samsonite’s Silhouette collection is likely the oldest on our list. But those six decades of innovation have helped make this one of the best and most versatile bags out there—not to mention one with excellent style. You can also feel good about your purchase knowing that it features 100 percent post-consumer recycled PET bottles.

Our testers liked the size of the bag and the opening, similar to a suitcase, which made it easy to pack and access items. There were many—almost too many—pockets and compartments. And our testers loved how comfortable and supportive this bag was to carry, noting its excellent weight distribution. “I would recommend this bag to someone looking for a backpack they can use as a primary form of luggage,” a tester concluded. “It has enough room and compartments to fit all of the essentials and keep them organized. It's also comfortable, supportive, and easy to carry.”

Best for Techies

Thule subterra backpack 34l.

Functional and looks good

Bag included for dirty laundry

Not the most comfortable

We’ve been pleasantly surprised with Thule’s line of luggage. And that certainly includes the Subterra backpack. This rugged pack could also be a good commuter option as it has a magnetic rolling top closure, a padded laptop sleeve, and a PowerPocket for charging items on the go. We love that it has many access points and comes with a packing cube and garment bag for dirty clothes.

"I loved being able to put my normal packing cubes inside the big cube that comes with the bag, and I was able to use the bag as a day bag anytime I needed to carry extra, and it never felt super bulky,” a tester reported—however, they noted that the bag didn’t particularly help their already-sore back. Not surprisingly, considering its construction, the pack aced our durability tests.

Best for Storage

Different ways to carry

A bit heavy

If you’ve never heard of Mystery Ranch, let us introduce you to the Bozeman, Montana-based brand, which makes super rugged packs for backpacking, hunting, the military, and firefighters. This travel-focused pack is incredibly solid on the outside and has many excellent organization and design features inside.

Highlights include a stowable hip belt and shoulder straps, multiple carrying options, a dirty clothes compartment, three inner divided pockets, and lockable zippers.

Capacity: 30, 45, and 60 liters | Weight: 4.3 pounds | Dimensions: 21 x 13 x 12 inches | Materials: Plain spun nylon, 210-denier nylon

We recommend the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack thanks to its incredibly durable polyester and nylon materials, well-designed internal storage, and included rainfly. Another great pick is the Vancropak Travel Backpack , which rings up at a fraction of the cost of some other options on the market.

We selected products to test based on the expertise of TripSavvy editors and writers and on internet research. Not surprisingly, TripSavvy editors and writers travel a lot. And they have many carry-on backpacks they like and don’t like.

To ensure we weren’t missing anything, we also researched what other prominent sites have featured and looked at top-rated and reviewed backpacks on sites like Amazon and REI. Once an initial list of products was selected, we narrowed it down to the final 28 for testing based on style, function, and price.

We tested the backpacks for capacity, design, comfort, durability, and value. In our New York City-based testing lab, we asked testers to pack each backpack with three shirts, two pants, one jacket, one pair of shoes, and a toiletry bag to test for capacity. We asked the testers to consider all aspects of the backpack’s construction, organizational capabilities, and any design innovations.

Testers then carried each backpack around using the different carrying styles. We asked the testers to rate how comfortable the bag felt fully packed. After the comfort test, we asked testers to toss and throw the bag several feet multiple times. We looked for damage on the outside of the bag and any damage to products inside the bag. Lastly, we asked testers to rate the bag for overall value after a price reveal.

We have since sent the backpacks to testers to continue testing as they travel. We will update this document accordingly as their insights are submitted.

Aer Travel Pack 3 : This pack was comfortable to wear thanks to its supportively firm and cushioned back, while its rugged fabric stood up well to rough handling. Our tester subtracted some points for capacity, as it was a squeeze to get everything on the list to fit, and for the more function-forward style.

Everlane The ReNew Transit Backpack : This bag is very nice to look at and proved quite durable. However, it's on the small side and the features aren't particularly travel-oriented—namely, the inflexible bottle holder and the magnetic flip top that is easily displaced when the pack is full.

Minaal Carry-on 3.0 Bag : Our tester appreciated the comfort of the straps and the practical capacity of this bag, though the price was on the higher end and the packing experience was a bit of a learning curve.

Monos Metro Backpack : Another looker, the design of this bag got high praise. We liked the 270-degree opening, the easy-release front pouch, and the comfortable straps. At 18 liters, this back is more of a complement piece to other luggage and could use a better weight distribution system.

Timbuk2 Never Check Expandable : The expansion feature was a hit once we figured out how to use it and the durability of this pack was undeniable. It was difficult to look past a faulty zipper design that got caught frequently when trying to close.

What to Look For in a Carry-on Backpack

Prices for carry-on backpacks vary widely, so consider what your greatest needs are. You can find a spacious travel backpack for under $100—often under $50—but if you plan on facing harsh outdoor environments , consider investing a bit more money for something waterproof. Leather backpacks can cost hundreds of dollars; keep this in mind if that material is important to you. Anti-theft travel backpacks can be a bit more expensive but are often essential in highly trafficked destinations.

There are so many styles out there you could spend days filtering through the different backpacks on the market. Keep it simple: How will you be using this backpack? If you’re interfacing with clients or business partners, look for something minimal and sleek that doesn’t showcase a million pockets. If you plan on living out of your backpack for most of your trip, pockets are more of a priority. You'll want a bag that zips open flat like a suitcase for easy packing and unloading (this also makes going through security easier).

If you are using your travel backpack for hiking, find something with a removable hip harness to distribute the weight of your pack better when you’re on the move. If you plan on wearing your travel backpack casually—only in the airport or to work—seek out a style with adjustable straps and a padded back. This will help ward off any back pain, especially if you carry a lot of weight. When you’re trying on backpacks, test out the shoulder straps and imagine how they would feel if the pack was filled to capacity. Is there ample padding? Will the material cut into your shoulders? Does the back of the backpack feel like it would be breathable?

The size of backpacks is generally measured in volume (liters) or dimensions (inches or centimeters). While it is essential to refer to the specific requirements of the airline you'll be flying, a good starting point for a carry-on when flying domestically is 22 x 14 x 9 inches or 45 total linear inches (115 centimeters) including all handles and wheels. This size comes out to a 43-liter pack, so anything smaller should easily meet any U.S. airline size restrictions. However, this is only the beginning, and several factors may increase or decrease your allowance, such as the size of the plane and flight class you book.

This will vary based on your backpack's materials. For nylon and other water-resistant fabrics, get a damp cloth and spot-clean your pack. A damp cloth will also do the trick if your bag has plastic or metal elements. For leather backpacks, you’ll want to purchase a special leather conditioner and cleaner to maintain the integrity of your backpack.

This is an excellent feature if you plan on hiking or spending long periods carrying your backpack. It will help distribute the weight of your pack better across your body, ultimately providing more comfort. Most backpacks that are focused on outdoor adventures will have this feature.

Many backpacks are marketed as anti-theft, meaning it’s tougher for someone else to get inside your pack. Some backpacks have zippers that allow you to open the main interior compartment while wearing it—so you don’t have to take it off and risk having someone else pick it up. Others are designed with webbing over the zipper openings, making it very hard for someone to locate and unzip the bag while you have it on.

No, this is not the norm when it comes to backpacks. Compression cords make packing easier and function the same way a compression strap or cord would work in a regular suitcase. Some travel-focused carry-on backpacks do have this built-in. But if you want to squeeze in more items, consider investing in some packing cubes . These will help organize your backpack, too.

For most travel scenarios, he prefers backpacks over spinners or roller suitcases because of their ruggedness and different carrying methods. He currently uses Cotopaxi’s Allpa 35L, Thule’s Subterra, and Topo Design’s Global Travel Pack the most. Each product recommended in this review was thoroughly researched and tested.

A backpack is the best, most efficient, and most comfortable way to carry your stuff—there's a reason why you don't see people hiking on the Appalachian Trail with a tote. But finding the right one that works for you and your lifestyle isn't easy. Whether you're commuting to an office or school, running to your local coffee shop, or going on a weekend trip, a good backpack will look good and keep your stuff organized. It's easier on your neck and shoulders than an overstuffed purse or briefcase (and miles better than trying to hold everything in your hands).

Whatever your needs, we have a fit and functional backpack for you. We inspect backpacks for a suspended, padded laptop sleeve; durable fabrics and high-quality zippers; and versatile storage options. Don't see anything you like here? Check out our other guides, including the Best Recycled Bags , Best Laptop Totes and Purses , Best Messenger Bags , Best Camera Bags , and the Best Travel Bags .

Updated January 2024: We added the North Face Jester, the Road Runner Slacker Day Pack, the Solo machine washable backpack, the Cariuma laptop backpack, and the Patagonia Ultralight Tote Pack. We also added some accessories.

The Best Backpack

When I (Adrienne) travel for work, I typically carry a Tom Bihn bag. The compact clamshell Synik 22 is my favorite. It's a small, low-profile bag that nonetheless fits a ton of stuff, thoughtfully placed and designed. For example, the zippered water bottle pocket is located in the middle of the backpack instead of on the side, so it won't tip you off balance. The pen pockets are located in flaps on the side rather than in the middle top, for convenient access when you're walking. The exterior is made from Bluesign-certified 400-denier ballistic nylon with top-of-the-line YKK water-repellent coiled zippers that are three times the size of normal daypack toothed zippers. You stand a better chance of lopping a finger off than you do getting this zipper stuck. Each bag has a lifetime guarantee.

Because the bag is so small, the pass-through on the back is only 7 inches wide—too narrow to slip over the handle of a carry-on. And the dense fabric and plentiful hardware—the zippers, O-rings, and buckles—make it a little heavy. But in the 22-liter size, I didn't notice the extra weight. It's the perfect, organized conference companion, but it's on the highest end of what we think is worth spending on a bag.

★ A roll-top Tom Bihn: The Tom Bihn Addax for $304 has become one of my go-to bags. Roll-top bags are more versatile than zippered ones. Don’t have enough room? Unroll it and stick your bike helmet in. Too much? Roll it down to compress the space. If you live in a rainy area, roll-tops keep water from seeping through the top zippers. Like all Tom Bihn bags, the pockets are metaphysical perfection, with a huge laptop pocket with two-way access that also has a tablet pocket for my Kindle, and front pockets with O-rings to hook keys and other sundries. It has a huge luggage pass-through and hefty padded shoulder straps. It's also hand-sewn in the US from PFC-free material and has a lifetime warranty that’s as bombproof as the ballistic nylon fabric. It’s a good thing because, at this price, you only want to buy it once.

Most Stylish

I (Medea) am a working, grown adult, not a high schooler headed to algebra or a hiker traversing the Alps. When I leave my work-from-home bubble to venture outside, my bag should look like a perfectly curated accessory to my outfit, not a ragged relic or a rugged pack. The 8.5-liter Rains Backpack Mini helps me maintain my sense of style without stripping away function. It holds my 13-inch MacBook and the accessories I need for work. I've even packed this little bag with an extra outfit and toiletries (in addition to my laptop) for a night away. Plus, it looks so pretty.

You can upgrade to the 13-liter version for $125 , but both sizes have the same-size laptop sleeve. They're waterproof and come in fun colors (I bought one in lavender a few years back), and the Mini has held up well over the past few years. There's a small phone zip pocket on the back panel, but when I'm commuting I like to keep my wallet there so I know no one can grab it. Look at Rains' other backpacks if you like its understated, Scandinavian style.

Best Budget Bag

Despite being more affordable than most of the bags on this list, this Herschel looks just as nice and is just as capable. I (Medea) used the Heritage as my school bag and filled it with a day's worth of textbooks and a laptop in its dedicated 15-inch sleeve. I've also used it as an overnight bag stuffed with clothes and a pair of shoes, and as a carry-on with essentials should my luggage get lost. It has since followed me into my work life too. It's made from 600-denier polyester with a faux leather bottom and handle.

After years of heavy use, it has only recently started to show signs of wear, especially on the top handle. The bag itself hasn't ripped, and the straps are holding strong. The downside? There's no water bottle pocket. If the Heritage isn't what you're looking for, take a look at the rest of Herschel's backpacks .

★ Alternative: Cariuma makes some of our favorite recycled shoes , and the company also makes a simple laptop backpack ($89) out of recycled materials. It has an extremely basic design, without too many pockets, and it can fit laptops up to 17 inches deep. I like the bright green interior, which makes it easy to see all your stuff.

Best for School

I (Adrienne) live next to a small private college, and the backpack I see the most often on students is a North Face backpack with an exterior bungee. The North Face offers several options in both men's and women's versions , but the Jester is the most affordable. It's versatile enough to take to school on weekdays and use for day hikes or traveling on the weekends. It comes in several different prints, but the solid version I tried is made from 600D recycled polyester with recycled plastic trims and a 28-liter capacity—more than big enough for my 13-inch laptop, jacket, snacks, and water bottle.

I like that the bag is affordable, recycled, and incredibly light (about a pound). I tried the women's version, which fits my narrow shoulders well, and has a FlexVent suspension system for maintaining airflow between your back and the bag. The top front pocket is incredibly spacious and well organized, with pen and lip balm pockets, and enough room for my giant sunglasses case, phone, and wallet. The bag is also balanced so that the weight lands between your shoulders instead of on your hips, which is more comfortable. Everyone likes this distinctive giant bungee, and I understand that it helps pin wet jackets to your pack. However, it flops all over the place and gets caught on things if I'm not careful, and I do not like it.

★ Alternative: JanSport also makes affordable school backpacks. If you'd like to spend a bit more than the standard Superbreak ($38) , the Pro Pack system ($150) has a detachable front pack. When unhooked, the front pack is a fully functioning cross-body bag, and the backpack works with or without it. The strap unclips so it can be safely tucked away inside.

The Best iPad to Buy (and a Few to Avoid)

Best for Work

Backpacks are by far the most comfortable carrying option, but they don't always look professional enough for the workplace. If you're prepared to spend almost $600, this all-leather bag doesn't compromise on function. WIRED reviews editor Julian Chokkattu made it through CES 2023 with this on his back. He stowed a 13-inch MacBook Air (it can fit up to 16-inch laptops), an iPad in the second laptop sleeve, chargers, cables, his camera, and a separate flash. There's decent organization in there with a spare zippered pouch and padding at the base to protect your goods.

The front pocket can store a few other slim items, and he likes the tiny pocket near the handles for keys or sunglasses. But the side pockets are too tight to fit a water bottle.

★  Alternatives: We love Cuyana's leather tote , and its Leather Backpack ($478) is just as beautiful. The laptop sleeve fits my 13-inch MacBook, and a second pocket fits a tablet or Kindle. Two front magnetic-close pockets held my Owala water bottle . A more moderately priced option is the Bostanten backpack purse ($130) . As you might expect from the much cheaper price, the leather is shiny and stiff, and you have to treat the toothed zippers with some care or they catch. However, if your budget does not fit a $500 work bag, this will work well.

Laflore Paris bobobark Convertible Backpack

A Vegan Work Bag

This bag is beautiful. I (Medea) picture an artist wearing this around the city, holding their sketchbook and a paperback. Unlike a lot of the backpacks we like, the Bobobark looks great if you're dressed up, and it converts from a backpack to a purse—you can use the handle like a tote, sling it from one shoulder, or wear it cross-body. The straps could stand to be more comfortable though, and I opted to use it as a tote more than a backpack because of that.

The Bobobark is made from cork, which gives it a leather look without using animal products. It's water-resistant and durable, and the company sells cork conditioner and coloring cream to keep it looking its best—for the price, you will want to make sure it lasts a long time. While this size will hold your laptop and a few books, there's also a beautiful mini backpack/purse I've been eyeing.

United By Blue Recycled Tote Bag

The Best Backpack-Tote

United By Blue's Carryall tops our list of the Best Recycled Bags . It goes from tote to backpack easily, just unzip the back pocket, pull out the comfy backpack straps, and clip them onto the sturdy D-rings at the base. The material is water-resistant, and it's padded, so your 15-inch laptop is safe. The Carryall has two bottle pockets and enough organizational pouches to keep organized.

Everything is made of recycled materials, too—the interior, exterior, and straps are 100 percent recycled nylon, the padding is a combo of 60 percent recycled nylon and 40 percent recycled polyester, and even the zipper pulls are 100 percent recycled nylon paracord.

★ Another Convertible Tote: The Cotopaxi Del Día Todo Convertible Tote ($75) is made of repurposed nylon and polyester (as are all of the Del Día bags) and has wide, comfortable straps. There aren’t many organizational pockets—WIRED reviewer Louryn Strampe says she likes the cavernous main compartment. In this category, I (Adrienne) also like Patagonia's Ultralight Black Hole Tote Pack ($99) , which is recycled and also packs down small.

Fjallraven Kanken backpack with different fabrics customized

A Small, Customizable Bag

You've probably seen a Fjallraven bag on any plane, train, or bus. The 13-inch Kanken pack is especially small and good for everyday use, and it manages to fit a MacBook Pro in its laptop pocket. Plus the large main compartment and smaller front pocket can fit a Kindle, a thick planner, and a notebook, with room for lunch or a change of clothes. The fabric is rigid and repels water, and the company offers lifetime repairs (with a focus on sustainability ). I love the colors the bag comes in, but arguably the best part is that you can customize the Kanken .

The side pockets are tight, so they won't fit every type of bottle. (It held a 20-ounce Starbucks bottle, but anything wider won't do.) The Kanken comes with a foam pad that adds an extra layer of cushioning while you wear it, and you can take it out to use as a cushion when you need to sit on a hard surface. (It's not super cushy, but it's better than the cold, hard ground.) The Kanken also comes in a 17-inch version if you need the extra space.

★ A convertible Kanken: We also like Fjallraven's Kanken Totepack ($100) , which is essentially the same as the backpack but can switch from shoulder bag to backpack. It's smaller and not as padded as the United by Blue bag, but it's cute and compact, and it repels water. You don't have to unzip and clip the straps either, so if you're in a rush, just pull the straps over your shoulders.

Out of the Woods washable backpack

The Cheapest Backpack

Out of the Woods makes its bags from what it calls “ supernatural paper ”—responsibly sourced tree cellulose—and it says 93 percent of the water used for manufacturing is returned to the source. It looks a little like leather but does feel like a piece of paper. And it's just $38. The main compartment has a snap-closure laptop sleeve, and the front pocket fits a 9.5-inch tablet (barely, but it zipped). I wouldn't overpack this bag, for the risk of putting too much weight on the straps, but they're comfier than I thought they'd be considering they're not padded. However, the square of fabric where the straps are sewn to the actual bag needs to be worn in. It feels a little like an annoying shirt tag on my back.

Camelbak A.T.P. 2.0 Backpack

Narrow and Versatile

I (Adrienne) love Camelbak’s Adventure Travel Pack for everything from biking wine and watermelon to neighborhood parties to going on short hikes and cross-country flights. It’s so useful that I’m always startled to realize it only has a 20-liter capacity. I have it in the 100 percent recycled white color, which saves water and only emits half the greenhouse gas emissions by eliminating the dying process. It still looks pristine after a few weeks of being shoved under plane seats and left in backyards.

It’s a panel loader, which means you can unzip the top and see exactly where everything goes, like a duffel. This is convenient when packing for trips—I was able to fit clothes, a Dopp kit, and electronics for an overnight trip. (I know these types of zippers fail more often than top loaders, but it does make it easier to arrange and sort items near the bottom of the pack.) I particularly like how narrow it is; it fits my back and goes under airplane seats that even my children’s backpacks can’t. The bottle pocket has a zipper that makes it expandable so it can fit a little coffee thermos or my giant Yeti. Exterior compression straps also help squeeze my clothes even smaller. This is a great backpack if you want something that looks sleek enough for a work bag but is durable enough to take on a weekend trip to Yosemite.

★ Alternative: I also love the Patagonia Black Hole Backpack ($149) . This 25-liter bag is the perfect combination work/adventure bag. The suspended 15-inch laptop pocket clips shut, and the rest of the pockets are thoughtfully placed. It’s extremely light (a little over a pound) and is made from 100 percent recycled ripstop fabric.

Monos Metro backpack

Vegan Leather With a Detachable Pouch

The Metro Backpack's sophisticated look appealed to me à la the Rains bag—they're just nicer to look at if you like to match your bag to your outfit. This one has a secret too. The front pocket is a pouch that snaps on and off, so you can pack it full of things you may need on your lunch break, like makeup, tampons, or even just your wallet and sunglasses. There's a Folio Kit ($60) you can get separately that can be snapped on in its place.

The rest of the bag can be accessed via the clamshell opening. There's a zippered pocket and mesh slot against the back of the main compartment, and against the front side, there are felt-lined pockets made from recycled water bottles. These easily hold a laptop and a tablet, but there's an additional 15-inch laptop pocket against the back of the bag. The straps are comfortable, but they get heavy quickly. I tried this vegan leather option, but for a few bucks less you can opt for the nylon.

North Street Morrison backpack

Best Bike Bag

While toting around the Morrison backpack, a friend immediately said to me (Adrienne), “That's the coolest bag you've ever tested.” North Street bags are made by hand in Portland, Oregon. The exterior fabric is durable 1,000-denier Cordura, and the interior is a waterproof X-Pac VX21 liner with a drawstring closure underneath a buckled flap. The interior laptop compartment is suspended over the bottom of the bag, and I like that the key ring and zipper pulls are made from bright, easily findable red webbing.

It converts from a backpack to a pannier in about a minute. Just pull the backpack straps out of the pouch on the back and clip them on, or tuck them back into the pouch to switch to the pannier clip. I didn't find the rack clips to be uncomfortable at all. North Street switched to padded straps since we tested, which may be more comfortable, if bulkier.

★ Another locally-made bag: The bag that I am currently using is also handmade for cyclists, but in Los Angeles. It blows my mind that the Road Runner Slacker Day Pack ($145) is only 13 liters, because it magically held everything I needed for a full day of travel and work at CES 2024 . I particularly like the flap, which buckles over a cinched top and let me get through security quickly by stuffing things in and out. Another small and reliable company is Timbuk2. The Division Laptop Backpack ($109) is WIRED reviewer Matt Jancer's backpack.

Wandrd Prvke

The Best Camera Bag

Reviews editor Julian Chokkattu loves Wandrd's Prvke series bags to hold all his gear, from his mirrorless camera and extra lenses to a 16-inch MacBook Pro and various other accessories. Despite months of regular use, it's in fantastic condition, thanks to the 1,680-denier ballistic nylon exterior and the weather-resistant zippers. Lots of little pockets adorn the bag to store cables, card readers, microfiber cloths, and the like—even one underneath that houses a rain fly to keep the bag dry when it's raining.

Julian opted for the Photography Bundle, which adds a camera cube filled with foldable Velcro dividers you can use to organize camera gear and keep them secure. It's also easy to access a camera from the side pocket without needing to take off the entire backpack. Wandrd is currently on Version 3 of the Prvke. Read our Best Camera Bags guide for more options.

STM Dux Pack backpack

For Organizers

The Dux's design takes some getting used to, but its organizational options might make you forget about its looks. This bag is very structured and surrounded by foam padding, so it can take a few bumps without breaking everything inside. Unzip the front pocket to unfurl two mesh zipper pouches and an additional fuzzy zipper pocket that fits fragile gear like sunglasses. Plus, there's a clip for keys, and if you need more room, you can unzip the bottom of this top pocket to directly access the main compartment of the bag.

This main section has three separate compartments you can access via either side of the bag, and it comes with a small pouch. You can fit cameras and lenses, or shoes and an outfit—whatever the day requires. (You can also remove the dividers.) The side entry flaps have their own pockets too, so every little thing you need to keep track of is accounted for. The two bottle pockets can unzip to expand—handy if you're carrying a tripod. The back is plushly lined with suspended pockets for a 16-inch Macbook Pro and tablet. There's yet another deep pocket on the very back of the bag near the handle, and slots on the shoulder straps to hold your phone, though it was tough to fit an iPhone with a Popsocket on the back.

A Tactical Bag

The GoRuck GR1 was designed by a former member of the Special Forces, so it's tough enough to take whatever you or nature can think to dish out. Its slim profile in no way betrays its awesome carrying capacity, which is bolstered by a hefty amount of MOLLE webbing to accommodate all sorts of straps, carabiners, or other items you might choose to clip to the interior or exterior.

The thick, padded straps take a while to break in, and at 3.5 pounds it's heavy for an everyday pack. But if you’ve spent years customizing your idiosyncratic carry system, complete with hand-sewn straps and just the right pouches for all your gear—or if you exit and enter your workplace by busting through a plate-glass window—then the GR1 will thrill you.

More Bags We Like

We've tried tons of bags. Below are some other good backpacks, but we also have roundups of recycled bags , totes and purses , messenger bags , camera bags , and travel bags .

  • Lululemon Everyday Backpack 2.0 for $98 : WIRED reviewer Louryn Strampe tried this bag after another bag failed her amid a San Francisco trip. It’s your run-of-the-mill NPC bag—but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. There’s one big main compartment; a dedicated, padded laptop pocket; a roomy pocket in the front; and space for a water bottle. It’s partially made with recycled materials. It's often sold out.
  • Targus Zero Waste EcoSmart Backpack for $60 : Targus’ Zero Waste Backpack is a solid backpack for under $100, and it's made from 20 recycled water bottles. It ships rolled up in a recycled plastic package that unfolds and slips into the laptop pocket to give the bag structure.
  • Troubadour Explorer Ridge Backpack for $325 : Troubadour bags are functional, sleek, and extremely expensive. This backpack's interior is nicely organized with pen holders, a mesh pocket, and a few other slots for your knickknacks, plus a padded section for a 16-inch laptop.
  • Aer Designs Slim Pack for $115 : For quick trips, this 8.5-liter bag still fits a laptop, charger, wallet, water bottle, phone, plus a snack. Its durable polyurethane coating can be easily wiped clean.
  • STM Goods Myth 18-Liter Backpack for $120 : Reviews editor Julian Chokkattu liked carrying this bag. A suspended laptop pocket keeps it safe from accidental drops and the thick padding helps it sit comfortably on your back.
  • Lo & Sons Hanover 2 for $238 : The Hanover 2 has a clever, padded, and detachable insert with four pockets in it. Use it for work to store a day planner, notebooks, coffee mug, and water bottle, or take it out and replace it with a diaper changing station , tiny rain jackets, and seemingly thousands of stuffed animals for the little ones.
  • Able Carry Daily Backpack for $138 : This pack is thin, so you can stuff it to the brim before it starts to get bulky. And stuff it full you can, because it has a pocket for everything . The Thirteen Daybag for $139 is similar but slightly smaller.
  • Mission Workshop Rhake for $435 : This roll-top bag has a ton of pockets, and its two-layer weatherproof construction and Velcro closures keep the contents dry. But those pockets aren't easy or fast to access, it's heavy, and it's even pricier than when we first tried it (and rising).
  • Solo's Re:fresh Machine Washable Backpack for $50 : Solo's affordable lightweight bag is made from 15 recycled plastic bottles, and it's meant to be machine-washed up to 12 times. We've occasionally washed bags not meant for this, and without issue, but if you (or your kid) is prone to messes, it's nice that this one is made to endure the rigors of the washer.

STM Myth Dapper Wrapper

Our Favorite Accessories

Oh, you have a backpack and you just … put things in it? And carry them around? That's great if it works for you, but don't worry if it doesn't. Most of us use an additional organization system. (This also lets us switch bags quickly and easily while we're testing.)

  • VentaPak for $46 : The VentaPak clips onto the back of your bag, pushing your pack 2 or so inches off you, increasing airflow and hopefully curbing sweating. Surprisingly, it didn’t look super obvious, and at only 12 ounces, it doesn’t add much weight. There are standard and small sizes, so check the website measurements if you’re not sure if it'll fit your bag.
  • STM Dapper Wrapper for $30: This is my favorite tech organizer for cables. It rolls up everything I need—my laptop charging block, a couple of USB-C cables, a portable battery or two—and unfolds it neatly so that everything is visible. No cable rat nests here!
  • Eagle Creek Pack-It XS for $15 : My husband packs a tiny toothbrush and toothpaste in here so he can brush his teeth after lunch or after getting off a plane. It's a good habit, and no one has ever offered him gum in a hinting manner. You should also do this.
  • Delfonics Pouch for $23 : Almost every bag manufacturer makes organizational pouches too. I like Delfonics and Baggu because they're affordable and come in a wide variety of sizes and bright colors. Bright colors are easy to see in the bottom of a bag!
  • Herschel Pencil Case for $22 : Yes, every backpack usually has a pen pocket or two. Even in this digital age, that's not nearly enough writing utensils, especially if you use a paper planner . Get a pencil case and corral them from dropping to the bottom of your bag and exploding.
