Our staff has an endless amount of energy for the game and we are fortunate to share it with you. So if you are looking to improve on and off the field – you have come to the right place.

Best Speed Baseball teams strive to compete at the highest level that is appropriate for the age group and talent level of each roster. During each travel baseball season, which runs from August 1 through July 31, our teams have earned an impressive array of tournament championships and runner up finishes. The teams at Best Speed play in tournaments primarily sanctioned by Northern California Travel Ball  or TPR Baseball .

Our annual roster tryouts are usually held every July. We usually have two teams at age levels 9u to 14u to ensure everyone gets play time.   If you are uncertain what age group your child belongs in check the Travel Ball Age Calculator .

A great opportunity to learn more about Best Speed and inquire about mid season registration would be attending our Friday Night Academy workouts. These workouts are run by Coach Alec and our active coaching staff and have a different focus every week. Check our calendar and plan your first visit to our facility!

Welcome to Sandlot Crew Baseball

travel baseball teams sacramento

Our Philosophy

Sandlot Crew Baseball is a local, community-ran baseball club that strives to provide excellent travel ball experience, focusing on growth and development. She are a non-profit organization operated by volunteers.

We believe the fall season is meant for kids to do strength and conditioning, work on improving particular aspects of their game, continuing to learn the game of baseball, and most importantly having fun. We support a non-baseball sport being the first priority and encourage them to play other sports during the fall. This allows our players to rest their arms for the following spring season when their primary focus is baseball.

travel baseball teams sacramento

Our season varies with each Sandlot Crew team, but typically runs in the fall from August to November for our teams 13U and below.

Sacramento’s latest homelessness count shows a decline. Here’s how much it dropped

Sacramento has roughly 3,000 fewer homeless people on its streets and in its shelters than it did two years ago, a new report has found.

There are now an estimated 6,615 homeless people living in Sacramento, a steep 29% decrease from the 9,278 people volunteers counted during the preceding survey in 2022. Elected officials are touting the new number — no longer higher than San Francisco’s — as a sign that efforts to combat the homeless crisis are finally working.

“There are still too many people experiencing homelessness for us to declare victory, but maybe homelessness is not so intractable after all,” stated Mayor Darrell Steinberg, who has made homelessness a major part of his platform as mayor since he was elected in 2016. “The dramatic reduction in Sacramento’s Point in Time count, particularly the 41% drop in unsheltered homelessness, undeniably affirms that the steady course we set seven years ago to address this state and national crisis is working.”

The report is the product of roughly 600 volunteers fanning the county during two cold nights in January to perform the federally-mandated count. Though lower than 2022, the new number is still significantly higher than the 5,561 homeless people counted in 2019, showing a continued overall increase from pre-COVID 19 levels.

Among the report’s findings:

▪ There are 3,944 people sleeping outdoors — 41% fewer than in 2022 — and 2,671 are in shelters.

▪ Over three fourths of the homeless people living outdoors — 3,053— live in the city of Sacramento, while 561 live in the unincorporated county, 133 live in Folsom and 83 in Elk Grove.

▪ There are 347 homeless families with children — 17% fewer than in 2022. About 97% of them are in shelters, mostly in hotels.

▪ There are 548 homeless veterans — down 8% from 2022 — including 330 who are sleeping outdoors.

▪ There are 2,965 people who are chronically homeless, meaning they’ve been homeless for over a year and have some sort of disability, and 68% of whom are sleeping outdoors.

▪ Black people are three to four times more likely to be homeless in Sacramento.

▪ American Indian/Alaska Native people are five to six more times likely to be homeless in Sacramento.

▪ There are 2,788 homeless adults with serious mental illnesses, 83% of whom are sleeping outdoors. Mental illnesses were considered serious if the homeless person identified that his or her mental illness made it hard to find and keep a job.

▪ The homeless are mostly Sacramentans. At the time of the count, 90% of the homeless people had been Sacramento residents for at least six months, and 62% had been lifelong residents

▪ Most of the homeless reported that they want to be housed. Among a list of suggestions, 58% of people said the top thing the region could do better to help them was increase affordable housing.

▪ Half of the homeless people were experiencing homelessness for the first time.

▪ A quarter of the homeless people had lived in foster or group homes prior to turning 18.

Since 2020, city and county leaders have opened hundreds of new shelter beds, including along Roseville Road and in south Sacramento. Despite that, the number of total people in shelters only went up 2% since 2022, the report found. That could be partly due to the closing of the Roomkey motel shelters, which included over 900 rooms, funded by the state during Covid, said Sacramento Steps Forward CEO Lisa Bates.

Today the city consistently has a wait list of over 2,500 people for one of its roughly 1,300 city shelter beds, according to city data.

In addition to the shelters, the city, county and nonprofits have gotten better at working together to provide mental health services and at placing more people into permanent housing out of the shelters, Bates said. Last year there were 2,421 people placed in permanent housing units, which was 675 more than 2022, according to the nonprofit.

Positive data points such as that one will help Sacramento still receive consistent levels of federal funding to address homelessness, despite the lower count, Bates said. However, the lower count could decrease the amount of money Sacramento gets in state money.

In the Bay Area, Oakland’s homeless population increased about 9%, to 5,490 , while San Francisco’s increased 7% to 8,328 . In 2022 Sacramento for the first time had a higher number than San Francisco. Though people cautioned that comparing raw numbers can be fraught given the difference in population sizes, it’s often cited as a stain on the capital city’s reputation.

Sacramento officials are set to release more more information on the new count, as well as the full report, on Wednesday.

Oakland athletics | pro-palestine stanford students barricade themselves inside office of university president, oakland athletics, oakland athletics | kurtenbach: a’s and b’s — oakland’s new minor-league team shows the town is still big-league, oakland ballers home opener: the difference between the a’s and b’s games tuesday night in oakland was night and day..

travel baseball teams sacramento

It featured a line around the block at first pitch, with hundreds of folks looking to fill the already-full stands. Merch and specialty beers were selling as fast as vendors could tap credit cards. And seemingly everyone was wearing green. There was even a tifo and some drums in left field.

The chants of “Let’s go Oakland” received full, enthusiastic participation.

The other crowd in The Town had some life, too, I suppose. Someone brought a vuvuzela to the park. That was annoying, but it made some noise. But there wasn’t much demand to get in the door, and the “Let’s Go Oakland” chants were limp, and oftentimes a solo affair for one guy behind home plate. There was a single, solitary flag being waved by a fan in right field.

Which one was the independent-league crowd?

Which one was watching a Major League Baseball game ?

The Oakland Ballers made their home debut Tuesday at a new stadium in Raimondi Park in West Oakland and it was an event . The crowd might have failed to yell out Too Short’s favorite word, but Mistah F.A.B. was in there, providing undeniable legitimacy to the proceedings.

Less than a year after the team was founded, the Pioneer League operation put on an exceptional, professional show. That’s a laudable accomplishment in itself.

For there to be so much enthusiasm for the B’s — even though no one who came to the game could possibly name any player on the field — is downright astounding.

But anyone who knows the East Bay and Oakland community could have seen it coming.

The B’s were founded after the A’s move to Las Vegas became official in November. We’ll see if the A’s ever do move to Las Vegas, but we know their time in Oakland ends after this season.

The B’s are supposed to fill the void.

The cynic would justly ask how an independent league team, playing in West Oakland city park could do that.

The answer is, of course, that they can’t.

Oakland deserves to be a major-league city. At one time, it was the home to an NBA, MLB, NHL, and NFL team. Alameda and Contra Costa Counties alone (hardly all of the East Bay) have a population that adds up to roughly half a million more people than the entire Kansas City metro.

And yet when the A’s leave at the end of the season, The Town will be devoid of a big-league team. It’s tragic.

But going to both the A’s and B’s games Tuesday — it was baseball night in Oakland for yours truly — forced me to ask a larger question:

Does it matter if Oakland doesn’t have a big-league team?

If the B’s can bring together the community as they did Tuesday night, there’s an undeniable and defiant answer:

It was only one night — the first night — for the B’s. There’s a long, long, long way to go, and it’s impossible to predict the future of the operation.

After all, the Oakland Roots — the region’s original spite team — might sell a ton of T-shirts and hats, but they haven’t actually played in The Town in years. Such are the perils of the minor leagues.

But the B’s outstanding first night creates some serious momentum. If they can maintain it or even grow it, they can become a centerpiece of Oakland life.

And isn’t that the goal?

Major league, minor league, no league — in this balkanized world, where everyone chooses their own truths and realities, sports are one of the last unifying forces.

They can help create connection and community.

And it’s that power that must be cherished and nurtured. It deserves reverence — it’s a sacred, too-often unspoken pact between a team and the places they call home.

Only one team understands that, and it’s not the one with some of the best baseball players in the world on the roster.

The A’s have treated the fans — even their most loyal customers — as suckers for too many years to count.

The B’s seem earnest in their mission of being fan-first. Time will tell if they can maintain that standard.

But the juxtaposition between the two teams — and the two crowds — on Tuesday was jarring; a stark reminder that in this world, you get what you give.

The A’s claimed to have roughly 1,000 more fans in the Coliseum stands than the B’s had at the capacity Raimondi (though I think the A’s were counting the dogs as it was Bark in the Park night).

I’d rather be with the 4,000-something at Raimondi cheering on a bunch of nobodies.

The crowd in some wobbly bleachers in a public park in West Oakland — that collection of punks, toddlers, beer dads, and baseball dorks having a party on a Tuesday — was the perfect encapsulation of what the A’s (and the Raiders and Warriors before them) squandered.

The A’s can abandon Oakland in search of a slightly greener pasture (if you catch my drift).

But you can’t buy the earnest energy I felt Tuesday on the west side of town, an energy that used to exist on the east side, once upon a time.

That was Oakland at its best. Stack it up against anyone else’s best — it’s just as good.

And it isn’t going anywhere, even if the A’s are high-tailing it out of town.

Who cares if the East Bay isn’t “big league” anymore?

I want to be part of whatever the B’s had going on Tuesday.

Because I’ll pick The Town any day.

How Dallas Baptist became college baseball’s most unlikely perennial contender

How Dallas Baptist became college baseball’s most unlikely perennial contender

Only five schools have reached the NCAA baseball tournament in each of the last 10 seasons. Four of those are expected names: Vanderbilt , Florida, LSU and Oklahoma State . They’re power conference schools with giant athletic departments and 11 baseball national championships between them.

But the fifth school on that streak is Dallas Baptist, a 4,200-student school that plays all of its other sports at the Division II level, the only D-I baseball school to do so.

With state-of-the-art facilities and a long list of MLB Draft picks — 73 in the last 16 years — Dallas Baptist has carried itself like a top-level college baseball program since it moved up to D-I in 2004. The Patriots haven’t had a losing season since 1978. Nobody involved with the program knows anything but winning. Their 44 wins this season are third-most in the country, including wins against Oklahoma and Arizona , the latter of which will host No. 2 seed DBU at a Regional in Tucson this weekend.

But how did this happen here, of all places? And as college sports continue to shift, with even more money funneled to the power conferences and sports like baseball discussing the potential to change their scholarship limits, can DBU continue to win?

“Everybody wishes they had a crystal ball,” said athletic director Matt Duce, who played baseball at DBU from 2015 to ’18. “The great thing about sports is that the field is level. When you get out there, I’d take the Patriots all day.”

Decatur Baptist College was Texas’ first junior college, founded in 1898. It moved to the outskirts of Dallas in 1965, renamed itself and soon became a four-year college. Five years later, it created a baseball program. The Patriots played at the NAIA level until moving up to Division I as an independent in 2004. When head coach Eric Newman left for the Nebraska pitching coach job in 2007, DBU promoted 29-year-old assistant Dan Heefner to the job, and he hasn’t left, 17 seasons later.

go-deeper

College baseball NCAA Regional predictions: Who advances to the College World Series?

In a state full of high-level college baseball programs, DBU has found a winning formula of player development. It’s not going to sign the best players away from Texas, Oklahoma or Texas A&M. But Texas is a big state with a lot of players. DBU’s recruiting classes often rank in the 30s nationally, but in some years it’s the 80s or 90s. It’s a cliché, but Heefner and his staff know how to spot talented players and coach ’em up. Last year’s team lost 11 players to pro baseball, including a school-record nine draft picks. The program didn’t miss a step. Every year, role players become stars.

“A lot of people are successful just on recruiting — get the best players you can and let them go,” Heefner said. “For us to compete, we’ve got to develop them. They come in at this (level) and we pour into them every day. By the time the season rolls around, they’re a different player.”

Heefner pointed out that baseball recruiting is a different challenge than football or basketball.

“It’s not like a guy’s in ninth or 10th grade and you know he’s a five-star,” he said. “We’ve had a number of guys who were not good enough to go anywhere, they go junior college, then we get them and they become All-Americans and make it to the big leagues.”

Nine players on the current DBU roster came from junior college. For as much damage as the transfer portal has done to mid-majors in football and basketball, it’s been a net positive for DBU thus far; this year’s roster features five other transfers from Division I schools.

Reliever Nick Wilson transferred in from Southern University for his final season and has become a key part of the bullpen. The Carrollton, Texas, native grew up going to DBU games but had two offers out of high school and started at a junior college.

“If you’re in the Dallas area and you’re highly recruited, you’ve got OU, A&M, the big football schools coming at you,” he said. “How does a little school like DBU put out seasons like this continually? It’s about the development.”

Investment has helped sustain the on-field success. Horner Ballpark opened in 2013. It added a turf field and a pitching lab in 2016. The school just built a pro locker room for alumni to come back and use, which they frequently do. The program’s most famous alumni include former All-Star Freddy Sanchez and World Series MVP Ben Zobrist.

“If I’m a high school kid that isn’t getting the the big major school offer I wanted to get but I want to play high college and professional baseball, I’m looking serious at DBU,” Zobrist said. “If I want to win and be developed, I’m going there.”

“They’ve invested in a way a lot of mid-major programs don’t,” said Baseball America writer Teddy Cahill.

The program does have an NIL collective, but DBU knows it can’t operate on the level of the SEC schools in the state. DBU rarely loses players to bigger schools, banking on its culture and development to keep the best players from going elsewhere.

“ Ryan Johnson , our No. 1 starter last year, has a chance to be a first-round draft pick this year, he could’ve gone anywhere,” Heefner said. “He was an All-American and was on Team USA. But for him, (transferring) wasn’t even a question.”

Heefner has drawn interest from bigger programs, especially in Texas. But he has stayed each time because of the personal fit, both for baseball and his faith, the latter an outward and important part of the program. He always felt DBU could mold its program after Rice , another Texas private school that won the 2003 national championship and made five men’s College World Series appearances in the 2000s.

DBU hasn’t made it there yet. The program hasn’t reached Omaha, coming as close as seven outs away in 2021.

“There’s only one thing we haven’t done, and that’s gone to Omaha, and we really feel like we can,” Heefner said. “It’s a fun thing when you’re a part of building something from the beginning. You want to keep going and see how far you can take it.”

Everyone around DBU hopes that continues, but they’re still adjusting to college sports’ recent landscape changes. The Patriots joined Conference USA from the Missouri Valley Conference last year for a step up in competition and a simpler travel schedule. They earned CUSA’s automatic bid as conference champion, but they would’ve made the field as an at-large anyway.

The recent settlement in House v. NCAA could lead to the elimination of scholarship limits or the creation of roster caps, which would have a dramatic impact on a sport like baseball. DBU has thrived in a college baseball environment in which every program is allotted 11.7 scholarships. What happens if that limit increases to 20 or 25?

“We constantly have our eye on the horizon,” Heefner said. “What’s happening? How are we going to fit into that? What do we need to do to make it work for us?”

For now, DBU heads into the Tucson Regional looking to emerge from a field that includes Arizona, West Virginia and Grand Canyon. Reaching this level of the NCAA Tournament has become the baseline standard of success. Whatever the future holds, DBU plans to be there.

“It’s incredibly fun,” Zobrist said. “Every year, you’re wondering if this is going to be the year. They don’t have off years. It’s been so long that they’ve had a chance. Everybody’s super proud of what Dan’s created there. Look at the track record of guys going pro. They really develop players.”

“We’re at the point where it’s not like they’re a mid-major program,” Cahill said. “It’s more like, of course they’re good.”
