Most people can easily determine when they're adding a little too much cargo weight to the family vehicle. For example, let's just say you were at the local home improvement warehouse store shopping for new ceramic tile. If you were to load box after box of ceramic tile to the cargo area of your hatchback subcompact car, it wouldn't take very long for you to realize that you were overloading the rear suspension. In fact, after loading just a few of the heavy boxes of tile into your car, you'd likely see that your rear bumper is noticeably closer to the pavement and your front bumper is moving upward just as quickly. In this case, it's very easy to establish that your small car is just not designed to carry that much weight.

Even if you had a pickup truck or SUV, there's a good chance that you might still see similar results. Of course, it would take a lot more weight (in this case, several more boxes of tile) to make the back end of a pickup truck or SUV sink like that because they're designed to carry much more cargo weight.

Now imagine that you were loading those boxes of tile into a massive recreational vehicle (RV). Unless you purchased an abnormally large amount of tile, you really wouldn't even know that the boxes of tile were there unless you actually looked inside. The reason is because some of the really big RVs are designed to carry a lot of cargo weight.

So how would you ever be able to determine if you were overloading an RV? After all, recreational vehicles carry things like furniture, appliances, televisions and people -- often lots of people. How much is too much? The short answer is that you would need to know the RV's cargo carrying capacity , or CCC. The long answer involves a little bit of simple math and a few definitions. Here's how to calculate an RV's cargo carrying capacity:

• Start with the vehicle's gross vehicle weight rating ( GVWR )
• 20,000 pounds (GVWR)
• Subtract the vehicle's unloaded vehicle weight (UVW)
• The UVW is a manufacturer provided weight measurement of the vehicle that includes a full tank (or tanks) of fuel, coolant and oil
• 14,500 pounds (UVW)
• Subtract the weight of the sleeping capacity weight rating (SCWR)
• The SCWR is another manufacturer provided weight measurement (a maximum weight) determined by multiplying 154 pounds times the number of sleeping positions
• 924 pounds (SCWR) (6 sleeping positions x 154 pounds)
• Subtract the weight of the propane fuel (LP gas)
• Propane weighs 4.2 pounds per gallon
• 50.4 pounds (LP gas) (12 gallons x 4.2 pounds)
• Subtract the weight of the fresh water on board
• Water weighs 8.3 pounds per gallon
• 207.5 pounds (fresh water) (25 gallons x 8.3 pounds)
• The result is the cargo carrying capacity (CCC) of the vehicle
• 4,318.1 pounds (CCC) (cargo carrying capacity)

It's important to understand that the cargo carrying capacity definition, as outlined for you here, is a weight limit, or maximum weight, as determined by the vehicle's manufacturer. For safety's sake, the RV CCC should never be exceeded.

If you're curious about your own vehicle's cargo carrying capacity, the manufacturer should be able to provide you with this data. Another option is to search for the information on the Internet. Most manufacturers will publish this and other important vehicle information online.

WA Ombudsman has no plans to stop travelling in role as president of International Ombudsman's Institute

WA's Ombudsman has defended spending almost $550 for two chauffeur-driven car trips, totalling just over two kilometres while on a trip to Rome, saying he "wanted something he could rely on".

He also said he plans to continue to travel in his role as president of an international body, despite his overseas trips coming under the scrutiny of the Corruption and Crime Commission.

The CCC has been conducting a public examination of spending by Ombudsman Chris Field's office, and how it relates to his role as president of the International Ombudsman Institute.

According to its website, the institute is the "only global organisation for the cooperation of more than 200 independent Ombudsman institutions from more than 100 countries".

The inquiry began last month and Mr Field is facing a second batch of hearings in an inquiry into allegations he corruptly used his position to obtain a benefit.

Mr Field's overseas trips have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in recent years.

Earlier hearings revealed he had spent just 36 days in his office over the course of a year. 

On Tuesday, counsel assisting the inquiry Kirsten Nelson asked Mr Field if he intended to travel in 2024 for IOI purposes. 

"Yes I do," Mr Field said, pointing out that he would be "unaccompanied".

It was noted that since the first part of the hearings ended last month, Mr Field had travelled to Uzbekistan.

Bahrain trip in question

The CCC also focused on a trip the Ombudsman made to Bahrain in October, 2023 while on annual leave.

Mr Field said the Kingdom of Bahrain paid for his accommodation.

Ms Nelson asked him why he'd taken gifts with him and why the Ombudsman's office of WA paid for them.

Mr Field said he was "working on annual leave" and the gifts were for "international dignitaries".

Commissioner John McKechnie quizzed him regarding his IOI and WA Ombudsman roles.

"I see them as one and the same thing," Mr Field responded.

He defended the use of global chauffeur service Blacklane's "business class" in Rome in September, after the CCC was shown evidence that hundreds of dollars was spent on the car service for two journeys.

One was for he and his chief of staff Rebecca Poole to meet with the ambassador at the Holy See, at a cost of $330.71 for 1.4 km.

The second was to go to the ambassador's residence, at $217.19 for 0.8 km.

"I wanted something I could rely upon," Mr Field told the CCC.

The Ombudsman rejected multiple questions from counsel assisting, and the commissioner, that he may not be able to perform his WA duties while representing the IOI on trips overseas.

The CCC has been presented with evidence that for trips to New York and Ukraine in 2022, a business case was made only after the travel had finished.

Ms Nelson put it to Mr Field that this was "a sham".

The Ombudsman said while he approved his own travel, the records were simply a record of travel and "far away" from being a sham.

Mr Field admitted that Ms Poole had expressed concern about his trip to Ukraine as IOI president in December 2022.

Ms Poole had accompanied Mr Field on many trips but decided not to go to Ukraine.

Ms Nelson asked him whether he'd had a "robust exchange of views" with a Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) officer about the Ukraine trip due to safety concerns.

"Not in the slightest," Mr Field said.

He maintained that while the DFAT officer was robust, he was "very diplomatic".

The Ombudsman had planned to go to Ukraine again in 2023 but members of the IOI thought it would be too expensive, the CCC heard.

Guidance on Travel, Group Activities, Contact Info Update

To ensure the health and safety of the community, under the guidance of Governor Pritzker and Mayor Lightfoot, City Colleges of Chicago has prepared restrictions for events, group gatherings and travel. These restrictions are effective immediately.

Guidance on Travel

All Domestic Travel Conducted on Behalf of City Colleges Is Cancelled Through At Least April 12:

All college sanctioned trips outside of Chicago city limits, including sports, are canceled through Spring Break (April 12). Additional guidance will be issued for travel post Spring Break in the upcoming weeks. For personal domestic travel, employees should closely monitor CDC Travel Guidance for up-to-date travel restrictions and necessary health precautions. There are not currently domestic travel restrictions. However, you may be at higher risk of exposure if you travel to areas that have experienced COVID-19 outbreaks. If you or your travel companion(s) are at higher risk of severe illness, you should avoid all nonessential travel. We urge caution and the exercise of personal judgment. If you return from travel and experience fever and respiratory symptoms, please contact your medical provider immediately. All international travel on behalf of City Colleges is canceled until further notice.

Guidance on Group Activities

We are limiting group activities and events. Athletics will be suspended until further notice.

All sports, including games and all practices, are cancelled until further notice.

Essential college activities involving students, faculty, and staff can proceed as usual.

Non-essential activities with more than 50 participants must be rescheduled to a later date, held virtually or canceled.

We are limiting visitors to CCC facilities

Colleges must limit any non-essential visitors. Vendors, service providers, and any other essential personnel who are required for the daily functioning of the college can continue to provide services as usual. Colleges must follow the guidance on group gathering restrictions for visitors in all circumstances. CCC staff should only travel between colleges, if essential.

All use of College facilities by external organizations is suspended through April 4 or until further notice.

Certification requirements vary by year. The requirements below pertain to those who have registered for the certification in 2022 and beyond. Please refer to your Certification Logbook if you’ve enrolled in previous years.  

In order to qualify for Certified Cruise Counsellor (CCC) Certification, the following must be achieved:

Pre- and Post- requisites

Enrollee must be an active CLIA Individual Agent Member (IAM) and maintain active membership during the certification completion period. Certified Cruise Counsellor Certification candidates have eighteen (18) months from the date of enrollment to complete the certification requirements and submit documentation per the Logbook instructions. Once a CLIA IAM graduates with the CCC designation, the graduate must renew CLIA Individual Agent Membership to maintain the certification.

Mandatory Training

Must complete and pass the quiz for each of the following courses, live or online:.

• Cruising 201
• Successful Qualifying
• Power Selling 101: Skills
• World Geography Eastern Hemisphere
• World Geography Western Hemisphere
• Delivering Great Customer Service
• The Wonderful World of Ship Inspections

Elective Training

Thirty (30) credits received for any combination of the following:.

• Cruise360 attendance can only be used once per certification level. If you have attended Cruise360 multiple times, you must use a different year for other certification levels.
• Full attendance at a CLIA Live Training or Virtual Training Event (30 credits each, one per certification level)
• CLIA Industry Partner Training - Global Cruise Line Members, Hotels, Destinations (credits vary)

Product Knowledge

One (1) live or virtual ship inspection.

• Must be a Live Ship Inspection or CLIA provided Virtual Ship Inspection
• Must be CLIA Global Cruise Line Member
• May include a Ship Inspection from up to three (3) years prior to enrollment date

Five (5) Stateroom Bookings

• Must be booked or fully deposited through a current CLIA Travel Agency Member
