The Travel Clinic is a convenient, local service for pre- and post-travel-related medical needs. Time-saving counseling is provided by a board-certified Infectious Disease Specialist. Common travel-related vaccines are readily available and competitively priced. The Travel Clinic has access to up-to-date travel advisories from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and literature concerning issues that may be encountered while traveling.

• An Infectious Disease physician reviews the traveler’s itinerary in detail
• Recommended immunizations are determined according to the traveler’s specific destinations and history of previous vaccines
• Travelers are counseled about malaria prophylaxis, traveler’s diarrhea, and any other medically relevant aspects of their planned trip (e.g. seasickness, altitude sickness, HIV exposure/risk, food and water precautions, and rabies risk).
• The patient’s medical history and current medications are carefully reviewed to avoid potential drug-drug interactions with anti-malarial medications or travel vaccinations.

Vaccinations

• The Travel Clinic is certified by the CT State Department of Health to administer Yellow Fever vaccine. All vaccinations are administered as determined by the Infectious Disease physician.

Treatment of Travel Related Problems

• The Travel Clinic is also available to assist patients, who return from their trips, with various travel-related medical problems (e.g. fever, diarrhea, dermatitis, etc.).

Cost of Service

• The cost of travel-related counseling and vaccinations is often not covered by medical insurance. Travelers should be made aware of this prior to their visit, and they should be prepared to make full payment at the time of services rendered.
• Our charges are very competitive with other travel clinics throughout CT. Please call for prices.

How to Make a Referral

• Call the office  to make an appointment for full-service travel counseling and/or vaccinations.
• Travelers should be scheduled for their office visit at least three weeks prior to their departure date, to ensure adequate immunity while traveling.

The Practice Nurse can advise you on travel vaccination requirements.  Please note that some vaccines for overseas travel are not available on the NHS and you will be charged a fee for these.

It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible – at least 6 weeks before you travel. Some vaccines require more than one dose and vaccines take at least two weeks to become fully effective.

Whether you are planning a relaxing or adventurous holiday in Europe or further afield, it is important to consider the risks involved and what measures you can take to protect yourself.

The travel clinic is run by qualified nurses in travel health and they will be able to asses your health risks for your individual trip. 

Please call our friendly reception team on 020 8445 7587 to book an appointment. Please allow 6-8 weeks’ notice for travel consultation as a course of vaccinations might be required. Final appointment should be 2 weeks prior to date of travel.

Please print off and fill in the form below and bring it with you to the appointment. Forms are also available to collect from the surgery.

If you travel in less than 4 weeks, please contact one of the local private Travel clinics.

Please allow 6-8 weeks’ notice for travel consultation as a course of vaccinations might be required. Final appointment should be 2 weeks prior to date of travel.

Most travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge.

This is because travel vaccination is not included in the services provided by the NHS and therefore is a chargeable service, (please see travel Information for more details).

Non-urgent advice:

Please note we are unable to provide any rabies vaccinations at the moment. Please contact a private provider to check if they have any in stock.

The Vanderbilt International Travel Clinic provides required and recommended vaccines for people preparing to travel internationally. These vaccines can prevent serious illnesses. Please make your appointment with the Travel Clinic well in advance of your trip. Because most health insurance plans do not cover travel vaccines, we do not ever bill insurance; full payment is expected at time of service.

Make sure you carry a sufficient supply of your prescription medication for your trip.

Write down the names of your prescription medication, and carry them with you in case you lose or misplace your medication during your trip.

Although there are mixed reviews on its effectiveness, melatonin is a popular jet lag remedy and sleep aid. Ask our pharmacists if it's right for you.

Be sure to leave your itinerary with friends or relatives. This way they can contact you if there's an emergency back home.

Why do you need to be vaccinated for travel.

Vaccines are mandatory for travel to particular destinations. For example, if you have passed through an area where yellow fever is known to occur, many countries won't allow you to enter unless you have been properly vaccinated. We are a Designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. Our Travel Clinic Pharmacists can vaccinate and provide a certificate of proof or waiver.

Some places require you to carry an International Certificate of Vaccination to prove that you have been vaccinated against diseases prevalent in the territory.

More coronavirus vaccination centres have been opening throughout Essex.

Basildon University Hospital and Colchester Hospital were among the first sites in the country to give the Pfizer vaccine to people considered the highest priority – those aged 80 and over, care home staff and health care workers at high risk.

Many of these people at Basildon Hospital are also due to receive their second dose of the vaccine. Letters and emails have been sent to those expecting the top-up dose.

Both sites vaccinate around 250 patients a day, operating every day from 8am to 8pm.

Those eligible to receive the vaccine will be contacted by the NHS, who will inform them of where to go to get their first jab.

The Pfizer vaccine - currently the vaccine that's used throughout the UK, needs to be taken in two doses, at least 12 weeks apart.

The newly approved Oxford vaccine - AstraZeneca, is currently only being used at a small number of hospitals for the first few days for 'surveillance purposes'.

Sexual assault referral centres offer medical, practical and emotional support to anyone who has been sexually assaulted or raped. They have specially trained pediatrician / Forensic Nurse Examiners (FNE) and support workers to care for you.

Oakwood Place Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) offers free support and practical help to anyone in Essex who has experienced sexual abuse or sexual violence. Our Provider Location

The Eisenhower Travel Medicine Program, led by board certified infectious disease physician, Cyril Gaultier, MD, FIDSA, uses evidence-based treatment and vaccination recommendations for pre-travel consultations set forth by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM) and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).

The program provides a comprehensive risk assessment for each traveler, which is essential to accurately evaluate their specific health and destination risks. This thorough assessment enables the physician to determine appropriate interventions for their specific itinerary with the goal of minimizing adverse health outcomes.

Vaccinations might also be required and should be personalized according to the individual traveler’s immunization history, travel itinerary, and the amount of time available before departure. Vaccinations are offered on-site by Eisenhower Travel Medicine Program include:

• yellow fever
• hepatitis A
• hepatitis B
• Japanese encephalitis
• mumps and rubella
• meningococcal infections
• pneumococcal infections
• poliomyelitis
• rabies (veterans and adventuraous hikers)
• tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis and varicella.

Prescriptions for additional medications, such as altitude sickness and malaria pills, can be prescribed by the physicians based upon the traveler’s itinerary and destination.

The cost of an office visit/consultation is $125, plus the cost of individual vaccines and immunizations, based on the patient's needs and destination.
