Best time to visit peru.

Peru is a fascinating country with four distinct geographical regions. Not many countries can offer beaches, mountains, rainforests and deserts on one visit. These distinct regions offer something for everyone, which is why most Intrepid tours operate all year round.

June, July and August are considered the driest months in the Highlands and Amazon basin and are optimal for hiking and river journeys. However, even during the rainy season in the Amazon, the rains only fall for a few hours at a time. In the Andes, the rainy season can sometimes just mean a bit of overcast weather.

Remember that the Inca Trail is closed for maintenance in February, although there are other treks to Machu Picchu which are available at this time.

Culture and customs

Like many other South American nations, contemporary Peru is a rich mix of the modern and the ancient. In the highlands, where most of the population is Quechua or Aymara (descendants of the Incas), people speak their local language, wear traditional clothes, follow Inca traditions and chew coca leaves. Most lead agricultural lives and there is a great deal of poverty.

This is a stark contrast to the  European -influenced coast, which is considerably wealthier and mixed with Europeans, Mestizo (mix of Spanish and indigenous), Afro-Peruvians, Japanese  and Chinese immigrants.

Cultural festivals offer fascinating insights into the ancient customs of Peru that have been carried on from Inca times, with centuries-old food, clothing, song and dance playing an integral role in these celebrations.

What unites the country is a reverence for religion and family, as well as a love for soccer, or  futbol , as it’s called here.

Eating and drinking

Peruvians take their food seriously. Whether you’re in a village or a large city, your taste buds will thank you for visiting this South American nation.

Peruvian cuisine draws on a mix of Andean, Spanish, African and Asian influences. Stews and soups made with potatoes (Peru grows more than 4,000 varieties!), corn and quinoa are common, particularly in the highlands. Japanese-inspired seafood dishes and chifas (Peruvian-Chinese fusion) restaurants are also popular along the coast.

The cuisine is meat-heavy, but vegetarian options aren’t hard to come by - particularly dishes featuring avocados which grow abundantly throughout the country.

Taste your way through Peru on our  10 day Peru Real Food Adventure.

Foods to try in Peru

Peru's national dish is made with fish marinated in lime juice, onions, salt and chili peppers. It's typically served with chunks of corn on the cob and sweet potato. Cevicherias in Lima do it best.

Adventurous eaters should add cuy (guinea pig) to their must-try list. Roasted and usually served whole, it’s a popular staple in the highlands.

3. Lomo saltado

This beef or alpaca stir-fry is a popular chifa dish found across Peru.

4. Pisco sour

Made by mixing pisco, the national brandy, with lime juice, egg whites and sugar, this creamy and zesty cocktail goes down a treat.

5. Coca tea

Rumored to help with altitude sickness, this tea made from coca leaves is drunk by locals all over the Andes region and is hailed for its 'medicinal' properties.

Geography and environment

Peru is home to a diverse range of landscapes, including parts of the Amazon Basin, the Andean mountain range and Lake Titicaca. Not to mention areas of tropical savanna, desert, cloud forest and mangroves. Peru also has a long stretch of coast along the Pacific Ocean.

The Pacific Coast alternates between narrow bands of desert and fertile valleys, while the Andes cut through the center of the country, separating the coast from the jungle. Machu Picchu, Cusco and Puno are all located in the Highlands region.

History and government

Early history.

Archaeological evidence indicates that early life in Peru started up to 11,000 years ago, with nomadic people living a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. Organized civilizations based on land cultivation appear to have been established sometime around 6000 BC.

Over the centuries, Peru has seen many different civilizations rise and fall, grow and decline and evidence of these ancient civilizations can be found all around the country today, with the Nazca Lines being one of the most enigmatic examples.

However, the Incas lay claim to being one of the most famous and revered empires of all. Spanning from 1438 to 1532 AD, the audacious Inca Empire was responsible for one of the world's most impressive archaeological ruins – Machu Picchu.

Recent history

Military coups and regional disputes have dominated Peru's more recent history. The period between 1960 and 1990 saw lots of political instability and economic difficulty. With world commodity prices leveling out, Peru's agriculture-based economy suffered, as did its population who were largely reliant on farming.

New leadership in the 1990s and beyond has led to economic reforms and trade promotion, which has driven economic growth.

Celebrating the centenary of the re-discovery of Machu Picchu in 2011, Peru continues to enjoy widespread international attention for its cultural and historical riches.

Must-visit places in Peru

Peru isn't short of bucket list-worthy wonders. Here are just a few must-visit places to experience on your trip:

1. Machu Picchu

No matter how many photos you've seen, nothing can prepare you for seeing Machu Picchu in the flesh. Time slips away as you try to uncover the ruins' secrets and marvel at how such grandeur is possible in such a remote place.

Immerse yourself in ancient history on our 8 day  Inca Trail Express from Lima  tour.

History comes to life in Cusco . You can't turn a corner without coming across another reminder of its Inca past. Ruins are everywhere, and even new, elegant buildings have been built upon old Inca temples, houses and markets.

3. Sacred Valley

This fertile valley is packed with Inca sites including the massive fortress of Ollantaytambo. Visit on market day when the laidback villages come to life. The cobbled streets fill with every color, produce and animal imaginable.

Trek through llama-filled plains on our 15 day  Sacred Land of the Incas trip.

4. Amazon Jungle

Spend mornings watching colorful macaws and monkeys, and afternoons learning about traditional plant usage or spotting crocs in oxbow lakes. Then, at night, get your torch ready to seek out the jungle's larger creatures.

Spend a weekend in the Amazon on our 4 day  Amazon Jungle Short Break.

Peru's capital is home to unexpected treasures. Dig beneath the city's surface to uncover pre-Columbian temples, a touch of elegance and a huge dose of modern distractions; like the cafe-rich district of Miraflores. Lima is also world-renowned for its incredible food scene.

Savor the flavors of Lima on our 20 day  Peru Encompassed tour.

6. Arequipa

The White City, as it's affectionately known, is spectacular. Surrounded by canyons, volcanoes and deserts, the location is perfect for exploring Peru's wild side. But the true beauty of the city is in its buildings, built from white volcanic rock.

7. Colca Canyon

While the canyon is a dramatic sight (it's twice as deep as the Grand Canyon), it's a glimpse of the elusive Andean condor that will really get your heart racing. With a wing span of 3.2 meters, this bird doesn't just glide, it soars.

Marvel at this massive canyon on a 21 day  Peru Essentials tour.

8. Lake Titicaca

Big enough to house countless island communities, coca smugglers and the entirety of Bolivia's navy, Lake Titicaca is massive. Remnants of ancient cultures are everywhere and many communities live on reed islands as they have done for hundreds of years.

See Peru through the eyes of the locals on a  Lake Titica Homestay.

9. Nazca Lines

The Nazca Lines are one of the world's great mysteries. Shapes of spiders, monkeys and birds are drawn into the desert landscape over 500 sq kilometers. The most amazing part? They're only visible from the air.

10. Aguas Calientes

Whether you've just trekked the Inca Trail or traveled by train through the Sacred Valley, Aguas Calientes is the perfect place to stop, soak in a steaming thermal bath and reflect on the adventure so far.

Explore the 'gateway to Machu Picchu' on our  9 Premium Peru trip.

You'll find vendors selling colorful Peruvian handicrafts at tourist spots across the country. When possible, try to carry small bills and coins, as it can be difficult for vendors to give change, especially in remote areas.

Things to buy in Peru

1. Alpaca wool clothing

As one of the largest alpaca wool producers in the world, you'll find alpaca wool clothing almost everywhere in Peru. Beautiful shawls, ponchos and jumpers are the perfect way to keep warm, as Peruvians have traditionally done for centuries.

The classic hallmark of any backpacker who has traveled through South America, the chullo (knitted hat with ear flaps) might be a bit of a travel cliché but will be well-received as a gift back home.

3. Jewelery

Good quality gold and silver earrings, rings and bracelets are widely available throughout Peru, with classic Inca-style designs proving popular.

Festivals and events in Peru

Festivals are an important part of Peruvian culture. If you're lucky (or very organized), your trip may coincide with one of these lively fiestas:

1. Virgen de la Candelaria (Virgin of the Candlemas)

The city of Puno celebrates its patron saint with an epic, two-week party each November. Join in the revelry as performers parade the streets in elaborate costumes and masks.

2. Mistura Culinary Festival

Mistura is a massive event held in September where thousands of Peruvians and tourists come together to celebrate the country’s cuisine in Lima.

3. Cusco Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun)

Every year on June 24, Cusco celebrates the winter solstice with street dances, parades and a re-enactment of the Inca winter solstice festival at the Sacsayhuaman ruins.

4. Carnaval

Each year before Lent cities across Peru host Carnaval celebrations, but the festivities in Cajamarca are known for being the wildest – and wettest. Visitors flock to the city for nine days of dancing, partying, parades and water fights.

The weather in Peru differs from region to region with coastal areas experiencing a subtropical desert climate, a tropical climate in the Amazon rainforest and a temperate climate in the Andes (places like Cusco and Arequipa). While varying climates can mean the best time to visit  Peru  changes depending on the region you're visiting; generally, May to October sees consistently dry and sunny days perfect for enjoying the vibrant cities and beautiful landscapes of this  South American  country.

Most people can start to feel the effects of altitude at over 6561 feet (2000 m) regardless of age, gender or fitness level. While our leaders have basic first aid training and are aware of the closest medical facilities, it is very important that you make yourself aware of the cause and effects of traveling at altitude, monitor your health and seek assistance accordingly. It’s important to take it easy, drink plenty of water and speak to your group leader at once if you feel unwell.

We recommend seeing your doctor if you have any health concerns before undertaking the trip. Particularly if you have a pre-existing medical condition or take any medication.

Is Peru a LGBTQI-friendly destination?

While it might be common to see rainbow flags displayed throughout the Andes, this is in fact the flag of the Inca Empire and not a gay pride flag. Peru is a conservative, Catholic country where LGBTQI-rights are still developing. Many members of the LGBTQI community don’t publicly identify themselves and generally Peruvians will tolerate homosexuality on a ‘don’t-ask-don’t-tell’ basis. While Lima may be more tolerant towards LGBTQI-travelers, it’s advised that you should exercise discretion when traveling in country areas.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting   Equaldex   or   ILGA   before you travel.

Does my trip to Peru support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Peru directly support our foundation partner, Awamaki.

Awamaki empowers indigenous women in Peru with education and job opportunities. They offer lessons in quality control, product development and technical skills training for women artisans in rural Andean communities. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Peru tour highlights

Our selection of small group tours to Peru can take you from the soul-stirring sights of  walking the Inca Trail  to exploring the Peruvian Amazon, family trips in the Sacred Valley or  tours of Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca.

From lofty mountain peaks to fascinating Inca ruins, our tours encompass a vast choice of experiences around Peru, but a few of our favorite highlights include:

Trekking the Inca Trail  is the classic Peru experience. Culminating in Machu Picchu, designated one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, this challenging route twists and turns through the Andes Mountain Range, passing rushing rivers, crumbling Inca ruins and cloud forests wreathed in mist. Our four-day fully supported trek includes navigating the Inca Trail, staying at campsites away from the crowds, as well as Machu Picchu; one of the best views of the trip is getting your first glimpse of the glorious Inca ruins as you arrive at the Sun Gate on foot. You’ll also get to stroll through the ancient cobbled streets of Cusco, the atmospheric former Inca capital.

There’s also the option to extend your trip with a visit to an eco-lodge in the wildlife-rich Amazon basin. The trek can also be combined with an  in-depth Peru trip to Lake Titicaca and Colca Canyon, two of Peru’s most compelling natural highlights, where you’ll stay on the island of Taquile in a traditional homestay. There’s nothing like watching the sun set over the glass-like waters of the world’s highest navigable lake.

Machu Picchu

Perhaps the most famous of Peru’s top sights, Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Set high in the Andes Mountains at an altitude of 2,430 metres, it is believed to have been built by the Inca in the 15 th  century and later abandoned, though its original use still remains a mystery. You’ll certainly recognise the labyrinth of dry-stone walls clinging to the grassy plateau and terraced steps leading down to the Urubamba River. Whether choosing a  classic Peru trip  taking in the ancient citadel, a  walking and trekking tour to Peru , or combining your trip with  the Galapagos Islands , you’ll find that Machu Picchu features highly on all of our group tours to Peru.

Palccoyo (Rainbow mountain)

Peru’s striated mountains are high up on many people’s must-see sights in Peru, but this in turn attracts the crowds. Escape the bus tours with a trip to Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain – the antidote to the photographers' paradise of Vinicuna – where its striped flanks are dappled in shades of grey-green, pale gold and rich umber. Getting away from the crowds is something we aim to do on our tours, so if you’re looking to explore the mountains of Peru, Palccoyo is one to add to your list. Not only is the Palccoyo trek quieter and shorter than the alternative, it’s an out-and-back route which will allow you to enjoy the views on the way up and the way down.

Colca Canyon

One of the world’s deepest canyons, Colca Canyon is also one of the best places in Peru to spot rare Andean Condors. If the conditions are right, you can stand at the canyon rim and view these magnificent birds soaring on the thermals from miradors such as Cruz del Condor. The birds often swoop low over onlookers’ heads, adding to the excitement provided by the spectacular 1200 metre drop to the river below. You can visit Colca Canyon on our  Peru In Depth tour , which also includes the Inca Trail during 19 days of thrilling discovery.

Cusco was the former capital of the Inca empire, and marries both archaeological ruins and elegant Spanish colonial architecture – the latter best seen in Plaza de Armas, the old city’s colonnaded central square. Peruvian cuisine has seen somewhat of an explosion in recent years, and Cusco has its fair share of recommended restaurants where you can enjoy delicious Peruvian dishes like ceviche or tacu tacu – like Peruvian bubble and squeak. It’s also the gateway to Machu Picchu, so if you’re taking in the Inca citadel on one of our  classic Peru tours  you’ll pass through Cusco.

Solo travel in Peru

All of our Peru tours are suitable for solo travelers . You can expect that about half of our customers will travel solo, so if you’re considering an Explore tour as a solo traveler you won’t be the only person traveling alone. Going on a small-group tour gives you the perfect opportunity to meet fellow travelers who share the same interests. Considering traveling solo with a small group for the first time? We've answered some of your most-asked questions .

Best time to go to Peru

The dry season from May to September is the most popular time to hike the Inca Trail and visit the wonder of Machu Picchu . The hottest months of June and August are the busiest, whereas in September and October the temperatures are pleasantly warm without being too hot, and the trails are quieter.  Amazon Rainforest If you plan to extend your Peru tour with a wildlife-spotting trip along the tropical Amazon River , book a trip in September, October or November for the best experience. Immerse yourself in the lush jungle waterways and keep a lookout for bright orange frog, rainbow feathered Macaw and inquisitive otter.  Inti Raymi Festival For an immersive Peruvian cultural experience, book onto our Classic Peru Discovery Tour in June to witness colorful parades, eclectic dancing and live music during the Inti Raymi Festival celebrations in Cusco. This old Inca ‘Festival of the Sun’ happens on 24 June to mark the Southern hemisphere winter solstice.

PERU – Inca Trail to Machu Picchu with Skylodge

Must do adventure.

Toughen yourself up to dig into a platter of cute and cuddly guinea pigs roasted and seasoned with spices and served hot! The Peruvians love roast guinea pigs, and the furry rodents are delicious, too, as they all say. Try cuy chactado and cuy al palo on the Peru Tour.

Encounter the fascinating beasts, creepy crawlers, and other forms of wildlife at the lush green and dense Peruvian Amazon Forest, the home of the notorious and dangerous anaconda snake. Begin the excursion of the forest by a canopy walk among the treetops and visit Lake Sandoval too.

Go insane with excitement as you step into the glass pod to sleep while the pod remains suspended between mountains at about 1200 ft above sea level. Sleeping in the skylodge in the Sacred Valley of the Inca Empire in Peru is an unforgettable experience. Spend the night tucked safely in the bed surround by mountain landscapes and a sea of stars.

Trip of a lifetime.

“I never imagined myself taking a trip like this and went in not knowing at all what to expect and then each day was constantly blown away by the people, food, culture, history, nature, the list can go on and on. Peru is a one of a kind place that helped me open up my mind, learn more about myself, and have fun while doing so.”

– Rachael, traveled on Peru & Machu Picchu Adventure Sep. 2022

Peru is perfection

“I originally booked this trip to see Machu Picchu, but what I got was so much more. Between Lima, Cusco, Machu Picchu and more, this trip was unforgettable. From the food, to the people, the culture and stunning views, I highly recommend this trip. To top it all off, I had the most amazingly, kind, funny and compassionate tour guide Sally.”

– Julia, traveled on Peru & Machu Picchu Adventure Sep. 2022

What travelers are saying

"We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."

"We spent two wonderful weeks touring several of the best destinations in Portugal & Spain with a group of 16 people. Our guide (Fredy) was from Spain and intimately familiar with the region, including its rich history, attractions, and food/beverages. The tour was well-paced using a combinations of private vehicles (small buses and cabs), trains, and an airplane ride as well as a fair amount of walking to get around these two beautiful countries. We extended our stay in Lisbon to see more attractions and took a side trip to Fatima, Obidos, and Nazare that was also excellent. Would have liked to have a bit more time in a couple of the cities, but we'll just have to plan another trip!"

Peru Tour Selection Trips

  • For getting to Machu Picchu, you have many tour options: hike the challenging Inca Trail, hike one of the sometimes even more challenging Inca Trail alternatives , or take a delightful train ride with magnificent vistas in its own right.
  • If possible, don’t limit yourself to Machu Picchu. Look for tours that visit other archaeological sites in the northern reaches of Peru, including the massive adobe city of Chan Chan or the fascinating Mochica tombs in Chiclayo.
  • In the Amazon, choose a travel supplier that uses indigenous tour guides, who are best suited to show you the culture and experience of the world’s largest rainforest.
  • Bring altitude medicine and sunscreen. The city of Cusco and Lake Titicaca may be situated at the highest altitude you’ve ever encountered. Peru is also quite close to the Equator, where the sun’s rays can be powerful. Outside of Lima, sunblock can be hard to find.
  • Pack clothes for many occasions. When it’s winter in North America, it’s summer in Peru. Bring a swimsuit for the immaculate beaches, bring a jacket for the high Andean peaks, and bring clothes you don’t mind getting dirty for your Amazonian treks.
  • Practice a little Spanish before arriving in Peru. Although most tourist destinations are staffed with English-speakers, and your guide certainly will, knowing some basics will help you interact with Peruvians you meet in your travels.
  • Remember that hot water is a luxury in Peru. Don’t be surprised if you see light switches in your bathroom to provide you with a warm shower after a long day of sightseeing.
  • Prices are often negotiated in Peru so don’t be afraid to push for a better price or ask your guide about fair prices during your journey.
  • Also, cash in small bills is far more acceptable everywhere than credit cards, especially outside of the major cities.

Additional details

  • Good athletic shoes for hiking: When hiking in Peru , you want to make sure that your shoes have good treading and have good ankle support. You may opt to buy hiking boots, but most travelers say that athletic shoes are good enough to trek in. Make sure you break in your shoes before traveling so that you don’t end up with blisters!
  • Thick wool socks: The highlands of Peru are quite frigid, so warm socks will be a lifesaver. These will save your feet during the cold weather treks and freezing nights.
  • Thermal leggings/pants
  • Thermal long-sleeve shirts
  • Down jacket
  • Rain jacket: The weather can be very unpredictable, so a rain jacket or poncho will help you stay protected from unforeseen rain.
  • Insect repellent: In higher altitudes, bugs are less common. As Machu Picchu’s elevation is lower, you should pack insect repellent. The same goes for when visiting the Amazon.
  • Don’t wear flashy clothes and jewelry.
  • Don’t wander around at night, especially in cities.
  • Travel in groups.
  • Learn a little Spanish to help you get by.
  • Watch your drink to prevent spiking.
  • Keep your valuables at home/locked away in your hostel.
  • Avoid dodgy/deserted areas.
  • Avoid withdrawing from ATMs late at night, or from sketchy places to prevent fraud
  • Keep your credit card in sight when making purchases to prevent credit card fraud.
  • Exchange money at reputable agencies (eg. banks or money exchanges within hotels). This decreases the chance of receiving counterfeit bills, and being the target of crime.
  • Choose a reputable tour group.
  • Be vaccinated. Scroll down to learn more about vaccinations for Peru.
  • Get insured! You never know what misfortunes could happen during your trip.
  • Chill out for the first few days: Let your body adjust to the lower amount of oxygen intake.
  • Take deep breaths.
  • Avoid substances, such as alcohol: Drinking alcohol may increase your symptoms of altitude sickness.
  • Ascend slowly: Many flights land in Cusco. Some travelers recommend taking a trip to a lower region as soon as you land, and working your way back up to Cusco, so that your body can get used to the shift.
  • Eat well, especially high-carb foods.
  • Stay hydrated
  • Take a chill pill: Diamox can be taken 24 hours prior to your ascent to help prevent symptoms of altitude sickness.
  • Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR)
  • Diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus (DPT)
  • Varicella (chickenpox)
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • Yellow fever

Cradle to the vast Incan Empire, the largest in pre-Colombian America, Peru's power and gold attracted the Spanish conquistadors who used it to fund their own vast empire in the Americas. As a result, colonial gems like magnificent Cusco were built on Incan foundations, making for a fascinating hybrid culture. Peru is peppered with Incan sites, but none so famous as the "lost city" of Machu Picchu, whose breathtaking image seems to grace every brochure and travel book. Peru has been blessed with natural gifts as well: a huge chunk of Amazon rainforest falls within its bounds, and visitors can hike through jungle, trek in the Andes, and surf the northern beaches all in the same week. Cap it off with Lake Titicaca, one of the highest lakes in the world, and you've only just begun to scratch the surface.

Since 2005, Planeterra has been working with the Ccaccaccollo community to develop a women’s weaving cooperative. G Adventures groups are able to visit this community as part of the Sacred Valley Tour. Here they meet the women and learn about all the stages of the weaving process: hand-spinning the wool, dying the wool using natural dyes, and participating in a weaving demonstration. Travellers are also given the opportunity to purchase high quality textiles directly from the women who made them. Today, more than 55 women are part of the association, constantly learning new methods of production to make items that our travellers find useful for their trips, while also maintaining the traditional weaving methods to produce textiles made from llama and alpaca wool.

Parwa is a restaurant owned by the Huchuy Qosqo Association, a community-based tourism enterprise developed by Planeterra and G Adventures with co-financing from the Multilateral Investment Fund of the Inter-American Development Bank Group. All income earned by the restaurant is used for investment in social projects for the community. The ingredients used in the restaurant are bought directly from the local farmers, providing a local market for direct sales. Parwa Restaurant opened in March 2014 and has an average of 1,500 travellers per month, mostly from G Adventures. Employees have monthly salaries, health insurance, pension funds, and other labor benefits. Over 25 micro entrepreneurs received technical assistance and funds to establish new businesses to supply the Parwa restaurant or sell their goods to our travellers who visit the Huchuy Qosco community.

The best ways to pay for services in Peru

It’s common to pay with card, but cash is more widely accepted and probably your best bet. You can take out money at ATMs — they’re easily accessible, open on weekends, and allow you take out local currency (Peruvian Soles) and USD. We recommend using local currency so if you’re looking to exchange cash, it’s better to do it in the big cities rather than towns or tourist attractions because they generally have better rates. We also recommend using credit cards in restaurants, department stores, and supermarkets. If paying with a card, VISA is more generally used but Mastercard is accepted too.

Tips on tips

Some reasonable suggestions on how to tip the staff

When leaving a tip for your server in a restaurant, the standard 10-15% is fine.

Bar Service

People in Peru normally do not tip in bars, but if you’re feeling a little generous, anywhere between 5-10% is acceptable.

Tour guides

$ 5 usd/day.

When tipping the tour guides, it is recommended that each passenger contributes $5 USD/day or roughly $15 USD - $25 USD for treks that are three to four days long.

Trekking guides, porters, drivers, cooks

It is recommended that every passenger contributes about $50 USD towards the trekking guides, porters, drivers, and cooks.

Hotel concierge / cleaning / staff

$ 2- $ 5 usd.

Tipping hotel service is also not a common practice in the hotels we use, but anywhere between $2 USD and $5 USD is fine.

The price of a cab ride is normally negotiated before the trip starts, and the tip would be included in the agreed upon rate.

Other services

$ 1- $ 3 usd.

Drivers for included tours can be tipped typically between $1 and $3 USD.

Packing for Peru

Most people automatically assume that the weather is hot in South America, but because of the higher altitude in the Andes, the temperature can feel quite cold, especially at night. We recommend using a backpack for your convenience, or a medium-sized suitcase if you prefer. A daypack is also essential for carrying everyday items. Space is limited on transportation, so there is a limit of one main piece of luggage per person. You will be responsible for carrying your own luggage.

Electricity and power supplies in Peru

The entire country of Peru runs on 220-volt currents and uses two types of electrical outlets — one that accepts two-pronged plugs with flat, parallel blades (Type A), and another that accepts plugs with two round prongs (Type C). However, many Peruvian electrical outlets are designed to accept both types. If your appliance has a different plug attachment, you can buy a universal plug adapter that’s inexpensive and easy to carry around with you. Before you plug in any appliance that you’ve brought from home, make sure it can handle it. A great way to kill a 110-volt appliance is to fry it at 220 volts.

CITY BIKE TOUR

Today we’re going to get to know Lima by taking to its bike friendly streets. We’ll explore the Miraflores and Barranco neighbourhoods and gain a real insider perspective from Lima native Franco, who’ll provide the cultural, historical, societal and economic backdrop to this captivating city. Enjoy the stark contrast of modern skyscraper towers, charismatic tranquil neighbourhoods and rugged coastline cliffs. This evening you’ll put Lima’s “foodie” reputation to the test as we head to our absolute favourite restaurant in the city.

COOKING UP A STORM

In recent years Lima has emerged as a “culinary powerhouse” of the world and today you’re going to find out exactly why during our Peruvian cooking lesson. We’ll meet with a local chef and accompany him to one of Lima’s legendary fresh food markets to help select ingredients for our meal. We’ll then head back to his trendy ‘cevicheria’ restaurant and learn how to cook our very own ceviche and prepare the infamous pisco sour cocktails. A perfect day of eating, drinking and soaking up Peruvian culture.

WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE

Time to leave big city life now and dive headfirst into nature as we make our way to the Amazon Rainforest. After a short 90-minute flight we’ll land into the small Amazonian town of Puerto Maldonado and from here we’ll take an eye-opening boat ride down the Madre de Dio river towards our remote jungle lodge. Take some time to settle in and enjoy your new exotic surroundings – this evening will be our first opportunity to explore the neighbouring jungle as we leave camp to enjoy a night time nature walk.

Sunset in Puerto Maldonado, Peru

AMAZON ADVENTURE

Get ready for an action packed day of adventure navigating through the stunning Peruvian Amazon. We’ll hike the rainforest of Tambopata National Reserve, canoe the stunning Lake Sandoval and seek out wild animals from high up in tree-top canopies. Keep your eyes peeled for the abundance of wildlife in the vicinity – howler monkeys, caimans, giant river otters, macaws – to name only a few and marvel at the sounds, scents and solitude of this magical slice of earth.

Solo travel group hiking the amazon rainforest in Peru

SACRED VALLEY

We now swap one natural wonder for another as we catch a 1 hour flight towards Cusco and make our way to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, a wondrous setting located deep in the Peruvian Andes. We’ll spend the day there visiting some of the most spectacular sights in the valley – once home to the ancient inca empire – including the towns of Ollantaytambo, Moray, and the ridiculously cool Salt Mines of Maras (a UNESCO world heritage site). Afterwards we’ll make our way to our rustic countryside hotel for a chilled underneath the stars.

Other Way Round tour group in Cusco, Peru

Free day to further explore the Sacred Valley at your own pace. You could go visit the quaint market towns of Pisac or Chinchero. Or if you prefer to get your fix of ancient ruins, there are plenty of additional sights in the valley to rival Machu Picchu. And for the adrenaline junkies in the group there’s an absolute abundance of adventure activities on offer to help really take in your epic surroundings – horse riding, mountain biking, white water rafting or you could even attempt Peru’s longest zip line!

HIKE THE INCA TRAIL

Today we take on one of the world’s most epic hikes – the legendary “inca trail”. Built by the inca empire as a way to connect its most important settlements with centres of civilisation the trail is a breathtaking journey filled with inca ruins, cloud forests and majestic valley views. We’ll do the 1 day hike, catching the early morning train from Ollantaytambo to the fabled “kilometer 104” station. From here we’ll begin our 15km (9 mile) ascent towards the “Sun Gate”, where we’ll end our day with the most spectacular view looking down on Machu Picchu. We’ll spend the night in the nearby town of Aguas Calientes.

DISCOVER MACHU PICCHU

It’s time to go see exactly what all the fuss is about as today we now get to fully explore one of the ‘new 7 wonders of the world’ – Machu Picchu. We’ll make our way back up to the iconic citadel, this time with a short bus ride, and spend the day there wandering the mystical ruins and learning the fascinating history of the ‘lost city of the incas’. It really is awe inspiring. In the afternoon we’ll make our way by train and bus towards our next destination, the quaint city of Cusco.

Overlooking Machu Picchu during Other Way Round Peru group tour

CHARMING CUSCO

In keeping with the spirit of this relaxed Andean city, we’ll ease our way into the day as we slowly adjust to Cusco’s high altitude (3,400m). The coca tea is going to help! We’ll spend the morning strolling the cobbled streets and taking in the striking colonial architecture along with our local Cusqueño guide who’ll share with us some of his favourite spots. After lunch it’s on to a fun filled afternoon with a chocolate making workshop. Here you’ll use cacao beans straight from the Peruvian jungle and to create your very own signature chocolate. Delicious!

Enjoying drinks in Cusco Peru

Today is all yours to explore your own personal interests. If you still have some hiking left in you then two fantastic options are nearby day trips to the dazzling Rainbow Mountain or the equally spectacular Humantay Lake. If you prefer to get more of your city fix there’s still plenty more to do in and around Cusco (we’ll share with you our personal favs). For our last evening in Peru we’ll get together for a final group meal and enjoy some of the most traditional food you can find in the Cusco region.

What Our Guests Say

Other Way Round traveller testimonial of Peru group tour

“Head and Shoulders Above the Rest”

Having been on numerous group holidays with more than 5 different companies, my standards are high and I can honestly say that Other Way Round is head and shoulders above all of them.

“Not Mass Produced or Touristy”

What I loved about this trip was that it didn’t feel mass produced and touristy. There was a sense of originality to it and uniqueness about the trip and the itinerary .

“Completely Hassle Free”

I usually travel DIY, where I arrange and book everything myself, and it was such a welcome change to have all that time and stress of booking the different elements of the trip taken away from me.

“Trip of a Lifetime”

I will never forget this trip. Not only because of the country itself, but because of the experience that Other Way Round gave me and the other group members. It was a trip of a lifetime and you will be missing out if you don’t just book it!

The £200/$250 deposit is non-refundable. However, if you need to cancel at any point, you can put this towards any future trip you book with us (in any location).

Is This Peru Tour Right for You?

  • The entirety of this trip occurs in the Sacred Valley region of Peru which is high in altitude. If you are worried about altitude sickness we recommend consulting your doctor or local travel clinic to discuss possible altitude sickness medication.
  • The pace of life in Peru can be slow. For example, it’s not uncommon to wait for a while (over an hour) at a restaurant for your food. Patience is very important when visiting Peru.

The group leader on this Peru group tour will be a local from Peru. His/her job is to ensure the safety and well being of everyone on the trip and, of course, to show everyone the most amazing time ever! Since there is a strong cultural component for this trip your local Peruvian group leader will also be educating you on the culture, history and customs of Peru (specifically the Incas). You will be staying in boutique, independently owned 3 star hotels (4 nights) and a 2 star hotel/B&B (3 nights) for the duration of this Peru group travel trip. The hotels are all clean, safe and in central locations. In Ollantaytambo you will stay just a 5 minute walk from the central Plaza de Armas, in Aguas Calientes you will stay in the center of the town and in Cusco you are centrally located being just a 10 minute walk away from Plaza de Armas.

In order to budget properly please consider the following items which are not included in this Peru group trip:

  • Meals: You are responsible for 6 lunches and 5 dinners. Budget around $225 for meals not included.
  • Local drivers, guides and restaurant staff: Tipping is not compulsory but can make a big difference to individuals in the local hospitality industry in Peru. Therefore, we recommend budgeting around $50 for these services.
  • Group leader: Tipping your group leader is completely discretionary. For outstanding service you may consider tipping your group leader ~$10/day.
  • Travel insurance: Travel insurance covering our minimum requirements ($100k+ in medical coverage including emergency evacuation) is compulsory for all participants. Budget anywhere from $50 to $130 for travel insurance (from a 3rd party) depending on your specific coverage inclusions.

The single room supplement on this Peru group tour is $499. You will be able to select your preference for a single room supplement when filling out the application. If you are applying for this trip within 3 months of the departure please contact us for single room availability before applying.

Your group leader will be waiting for you at the airport in Cusco! Upon meeting your group leader he/she will get you set up with your airport transfer. After arriving in Ollantaytambo you will have free time until around 6pm upon which you will meet the group in the lobby of the hotel. Then you will walk to a nearby spot for drinks/dinner as you begin to get to know one another! While you will not physically meet your group mates until the evening of the first day you will be in contact with everyone well ahead of time in the group WhatsApp chat and, in addition, we will provide you with everyone’s traveler bios so you’ll already know each other a little before physically meeting!

On day 6 (in Cusco) you will have the opportunity to tailor the trip to your style by selecting an optional excursion. You will be able to select the optional excursion during the application process and, after, you’ll be sent an invoice to pay.

  • ATVing: $130
  • Paragliding: $150
  • Cooking Class: $70

You can read more about the optional excursions here .

We recommend bringing a combination of cash and credit/ATM card (assuming your credit card does not have foreign transaction fees). You will be able to use a credit card (Visa or Mastercard) at many shops and restaurants in Peru but local markets will be a cash only affair.

You may bring any size luggage that you wish.

Yes, you will have WiFi access at all the hotels and most restaurants. Please note the WiFi signal in the hotels can be spotty at times due to the area (especially in Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes).

In Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes the nightlife options are very chill with your only options being restaurants and bars. In Cusco there are more nightlife options such as clubs, dives, and pisco sour bars. The decision to go out at night or not is completely up to you!

Our Peru group travel tour occurs in the Sacred Valley region of Peru where you will experience elevations ranging from ~9,000 to ~11,000 feet above sea level (and even up to 17,000 feet above sea level on the Rainbow Mountain hike). Therefore, if you’ve never been in a high altitude environment before we recommend consulting your doctor to see if high altitude medication might be a good fit for you. Please note this Peru trip begins in Ollantaytambo (~9,000 feet above sea level) and not Cusco (~11,000 feet above sea level) where you have 3 nights to acclimate to the environment.

There is light hiking on day 2 and day 3 which is not very physically strenuous aside from the fact these light hikes occur in high altitude. The hiking day at Machu Picchu (day 5) is medium difficulty and individuals that do not regularly participate in physical activity at home might find it difficult. Lastly, the Rainbow Mountain hike (day 7) is considered difficult especially given the fact that it occurs in the highest altitude on this trip (17,000+ feet above sea level). Of course you can skip any of the hikes if you do not feel comfortable doing them but we encourage you to try!

You will need proper hiking gear (clothes), hiking shoes, and a light hiking day backpack for this Peru group trip. Layers are key! We will provide you with a detailed list of everything you need to bring once you join the trip.

Peru Group Travel Itinerary

  • It all starts today on your amazing Peru group travel trip! Today you’ll arrive in Cusco in the morning upon which you’ll be taken to Ollantaytambo, our home base for the next three nights. The Sacred Valley is located at a high altitude (9,000+ feet above sea level) so we’ll take it easy for the rest of today as we get acclimated to the elevation change.
  • Taking it easy involves getting to know your fellow trip mates, of course, so we’ll kick off the bonding process with our first group dinner over Peruvian food. Note: Peruvian food is delicious – you’ve officially been warned.

Daily Inclusions:

  • Lodging: B&B in Ollantaytambo (double occupancy)
  • Transportation: Private airport transfer from CUZ to B&B in Ollantaytambo
  • Meals: Dinner
  • We’ll be picked up at our hotel in the morning and head towards the cute town of Chinchero. Chinchero offers a wonderful display of Inca architecture, ruins and megalithic carved rocks. Next we’ll head to the fascinating display of terraces in Moray. Moray, made by the Incas, boasts three amphitheater-like terraces which are carved deep into the earth in a bowl shape, thought to be used to determine the optimal conditions for growing crops. Then we’ll head to the salt mines of Maras, a village known as a former salt-producing center, thought to date back to pre-Inca times. There are over 3,000 salt pools carved into the mountain side, being filled daily by a little stream of water. It’s truly an impressive site (check out the picture). After taking an (insane) amount of pictures we’ll head back to town and grab lunch and have some free time to explore the town of Ollantaytambo a bit further.
  • There’s nothing “official” planned tonight but relaxing at a local bar seems like a lovely idea.
  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Transportation: Private transportation during the tour
  • Activities: Tours of Moray, Maras and Chinchero
  • Other: Entrance fees to all sites visited
  • Today we’ll explore the Sacred Valley region a bit more. The Sacred Valley was a key area of settlement to the Incas; it’s a combination of agreeable climate and fertile plains bestowing an unusual abundance for the high Andes. After breakfast we’ll start our day in our own backyard by exploring Ollantaytambo. Ollantaytambo is a town of important Inca construction built during the Inca’s heydays (in the ruins you’ll find an amazing rock formation representing the Inca god Wiracocha – it’s pretty cool). After some light hiking we’ll get picked up and head towards a famous point known as El Mirador (Lookout Point) where you can see the entire Sacred Valley and learn about the Incas’ history. We’ll then proceed to the ruins of Pisac where we’ll learn about different aspects of Inca culture, after which we’ll then visit the town of Pisac (and the famous Pisac market). Lastly, after lunch, we’ll drive along the Urubamba River to a local community for a fascinating textile presentation complete with the communities’ local alpaca residents. Yes, alpaca selfies are encouraged.
  • What better way to conclude an amazing day of Inca exploration than another delicious dinner? That was rhetorical. Group dinner numero 3. Good stuff.
  • Activities: Tours of Pisac and Ollantaytambo
  • Transportation: Private transportation all day
  • This morning we’ll take it easy and rest up a bit as we prep for our afternoon departure to Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of Machu Picchu. We’ll head to the train station and board the train which will take us to Aguas Calientes at the base of Machu Picchu. The train ride is a special, fun experience with large windows that allow you to appreciate the incredible scenery as we follow the Urubamba River. Simply put, you’re going to love this ride!
  • Tonight, in Aguas Calientes, grab some din and take it easy before an early night’s rest (as tomorrow will be an early day, but well worth it).
  • Lodging: 3* hotel in Aguas Calientes (double occupancy)
  • Transportation: Train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes
  • How often can you wake up and say “I’m about to see one of the New Seven Wonders of the world”. Well, that’s about to happen today as we hit up Machu Picchu! Our day starts early as we attempt to beat the crowds at Machu Picchu, the citadel of the Inca Empire, hidden away high in the mountains. This once-great fortress was built in the 15th century and abandoned nearly 100 years later with the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors. You’ll have the morning to explore this amazing site with fellow group mates as you wish – selfie taking is highly encouraged.
  • The day was long, but beyond rewarding, and there’s no better way to wind down than over a chill night. For the record, Cusco is a fun and lively city so those of you who can’t wait to hit the night scene until tomorrow will find yourselves venturing out at night.
  • Lodging: 3* hotel in Cusco (double occupancy)
  • Activities: Machu Picchu
  • Transportation: Round trip bus to/from Machu Picchu, train from Aguas Calientes to Cusco
  • Other: Machu Picchu entrance fee
  • Today is a free day to spend as you wish in Cusco. You could explore the famous Cathedral of Cusco, take in the local cuisine via the San Pedro market or a cooking class, or explore the art scene and the many artisan shops featuring paintings, local goods and crafts! Or, if you want a more lively adventure, you could go ATVing in the beautiful Cusco countryside or paragliding over the Sacred Valley. Decisions, decisions.
  • This evening we’ll meet back up for some dinner and a night out in this fun city. Pisco shots anyone?

Optional Excursions:

  • Cooking class: $70
  • Today we’ll take on the most difficult (but of course most rewarding) hike of the trip – the stunning Rainbow Mountain! We’ll start our day very early and drive to the base of Vinicunca (as the Rainbow Mountain is known locally) where we’ll embark on the hike that will take us over a valley, across snow topped mountains and finally to a point 17,000 feet above sea level where you’ll witness the multi-colored mountain top! We’ll take in all the stunning views before making our way back down to the base and the drive back to Cusco.
  • After arriving back in Cusco you’ll have some free time this afternoon to do last minute souvenir shopping or rest after the epic hike earlier.
  • Tonight we’ll end our trip in Peru properly. First, a farewell group dinner with Peruvian food. After dinner our night continues as we’ll head out to a beautiful bar, called the Pisco museum, with a menu full of uniquely infused Pisco liqueurs and great live music! But, let’s be honest, our night won’t end there – Cusco’s nightlife is oh-so-fun.
  • Activities: Rainbow Mountain hike
  • Transportation: Private transportation to/from Rainbow Mountain from/to Cusco hotel
  • Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
  • Today, sadly, is your last on our Peru group travel trip for young professionals. While you will be going home today the experience on the trip and friendships made will last a lifetime! You’re free to depart from Cusco at any time today.
  • Transportation: Transfer from hotel in Cusco to airport

Travel Group Perú - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

travel group peru

Being the land of Inca ruins, delicious food and breathtaking landscapes, Peru has it all. Because of its rich cultural history and high biodiversity, this stunning country is a heaven on earth for both culture and nature lovers. Whether your clients are looking for hiking adventures, luxury beach holidays, learning about the Inca Empire, sandboarding in the desert or all of the before mentioned: everything is possible in beautiful Peru.

Highlights and hidden gems

On top of its famous highlights, such as Machu Picchu and the mysterious Nazca Lines, Peru also has a wide variety of interesting off-the-beaten-path destinations. One of them is Chachapoyas, the pre-Inca ruins where an Indiana Jones movie has been filmed. Near Cusco, the impressive mountain Apu Ausangate offers amazing trekking opportunities in a pristine area where your clients will encounter very little other tourists. And of course, the coast should be visited, if only to try a fresh ‘ceviche’ on a tropical beach.

A different way to explore Peru is through our Pure! Elements. These unique activities create a more in-depth experience for your clients, for example by learning about traditional weaving, swimming with sea lions and have lunch at in a transparent capsule at 400 meters high.

Pure! Peru is a dedicated B2B Destination Management Company (DMC) in Peru. Our professional and passionate team is specialized in tailor-made travel services. Pacific Coast

The Peruvian Coast measures 2415 kilometers (1500 miles) and exists out of beautiful beaches tempting guests to just relax under the palm trees. They should not just stay there, however, since tourists can also visit wonderful natural and cultural sites in this region. From the small town of Paracas, for example, travelers can sail to the Ballestas Islands to observe the huge colony of sea lions and penguins.  Also the mysterious Nazca Lines are located in Peru’s coastal area and are located not far from Huacachina, a lovely oasis surrounded by desert.

Andes Mountains

Machu Picchu, located in the Andes Mountains, is without doubt the most famous Inca complex  in the world and a once-in-a-lifetime destination. However, the Andes in Peru have much more to offer, both in terms of culture and nature. In the area of Cusco, once the exciting capital of the Inca Empire, wonderful treks of different levels lead through impressive landscapes of canyons and valleys. One of those valleys is the Sacred Valley, hidden under the skirts of lush green mountains, with interesting cultural sites and colorful indigenous markets. Another highlight of Peru is Lake Titicaca with its floating islands and interesting community life.

Amazon Rainforest

Peru exists for 60% out of rainforest that covers the entire eastern part of the country. This endless jungle is one of the most biologically diverse areas in the world and home to many exotic species, such as sloths, anacondas, monkeys and jaguars, even though feline species are shy and very rarely seen in the jungle. In Manu National Park, located northeast from Cusco, visitors have the biggest opportunity to spot wildlife. Further south, Puerto Maldonado also offers wonderful jungle options.
