Americans Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss won the beach volleyball tour finals and will finish 2023 ranked No. 2 in the world.

Kloth, a 26-year-old who is 6-foot-4, and Nuss, a 25-year-old who is 5-foot-6, beat Germans Svenja Müller and Cinja Tillmann 21-17, 21-14 in Saturday’s final in Doha to clinch the biggest title of their two-plus-year partnership.

They swept Olympic silver medalists Mariafe Artacho and Taliqua Clancy of Australia 21-19, 21-13 in the semifinals.

Kloth and Nuss are ranked second in the world behind Brazilians Ana Patricia and Duda, who took third at the finals.

Another American team, Kelly Cheng and Sara Hughes, beat Kloth and Nuss and Ana Patricia and Duda to win the world championships in October. Cheng and Hughes went 0-4 at the finals and are ranked third in the world.

Kloth and Nuss and Cheng and Hughes are in solid position to earn the two U.S. Olympic spots for the Paris Games. They will likely mathematically clinch those spots early next year.

Kloth and Nuss, former LSU teammates, began 2023 having to go through qualifying to earn main draw spots at international tournaments.

They totaled three international titles this year, plus two more on the domestic AVP tour.

Schedule updated: Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour adds stops to 2022 season

Travis Mewhirter

November 22, 2021

Volleyball World on Monday announced the latest stops in its preliminary schedule for the 2022 Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour.

A month ago, at the World Tour Finals in Cagliari, Italy, the new Beach Pro Tour was unveiled, a three-tiered system — divided into the Elite 16, Challengers, and Futures — that is replacing the five-star tour that was put into place in the wake of the Rio Olympic Games. Twelve stops were announced then, and six more were added on Monday.

Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour 2022 Schedule

March 10-13: Mexico Challenger March 17-20: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Elite 16 March 24-27: Mexico Elite 16 March 31-April 3: Itapema, Brazil Challenger April 7-10: Cape Town, South Africa Elite 16May 26-29: Ostrava, Czech Republic Elite 16 June 2-5: Jurmala, Latvia Elite 16 June 7-19: Rome, Italy World Championships July 7-10: Gstaad, Switzerland Elite 16 August 11-14: Hamburg, Germany Elite 16 September 15-18: France Elite 16 October 5-8: Red Sea, Egypt Challenger October 13-16: Maldives Challenger October: Nanjing, China Challenger October: China Challenger November 17-20: Australia Challenger November 24-27: Sydney, Australia Elite 16

Many of the stops have been long-time hosts of international beach volleyball. Rio de Janeiro was the first stop on the FIVB, in 1987, and played host to the wildly popular 2016 Olympic Games. Mexico has typically hosted a fall event, and featured back-to-back-to-back four stars in 2021, in Cancun.

Ostrava is one of the most unique stops on Tour and is a favorite amongst the players. Jurmala recently hosted the CEV European Championships, and is a beloved beach by Latvian Olympian and USC standout Tina Graudina .

Rome, Hamburg, and Gstaad have traditionally put on the grandest shows on the World Tour, with enormous fanbases, iconic sites, and major prize money.

Egypt, meanwhile, has never hosted a tournament, nor has the Maldives, unless you include the small invitational they put on two years ago, documented by the McKibbin brothers.

An obvious question mark for players and fans like is the total dearth of Futures events, which are the equivalent of one-stars in the old system. The graphic above mentioned that more cities will be announced soon, many of which are likely to be Futures events, as they are the cheapest to run.

There are several gaps in the schedule that are likely to be filled: between Cape Town and Ostrava, Rome and Gstaad, Gstaad and Hamburg, Hamburg and France, China and Australia.

No announcement has been made by the AVP or NORCECA in regards to their schedules for the 2022 beach volleyball seasons.

Canada shows grit in win over Japan

June 13, 2024: Canada came out on top of an intense five-set battle at 2024 Volleyball Nations League in Fukuoka, Japan, over the host nation today.

The final score was Japan 2 Canada 3 (25-23, 25-22, 20-25, 21-25, 14-16) .

"That was a big win for us,” said Canada’s head coach Shannon Winzer of her team’s comeback effort after being down two sets to none. “We knew we had to be patient on attack and then work hard on defense around our block and while we kept falling just short in two very close first and second sets, we found our rhythm and our confidence in the third and kept going from there. Big team effort tonight!”

It was a back-and-forth affair, with Canada just edging out Japan in attack points (68-67), service aces even at six and Canada making more errors 26-24. However, Canada’s block was effective with 13 points compared with six for Japan.

Alexa Gray with 30 points and Kiera Van Ryk with 27 points led the attack for Canada. Sarina Koga was top scorer for Japan with 20 points.

Canada is still in a tight race to qualify for Paris 2024. More on that process can be found here: https://bit.ly/3xfcDB0

Canada’s next match - a crucial contest against Netherlands as both teams are still vying for an Olympic berth - is at 2:30 am ET on Friday.

Former Lincoln dentist runs 17,000 miles to raise awareness about grief

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Former Lincoln dentist Joshua Nehring and his family are running from state capitol to state capitol across the country in a tour called the Black Pearl Project, raising awareness about grief.

The tour will cover 17,000 miles across 48 states in one calendar year and Joshua will run approximately 60 miles per day to make it to all the capitols on the tour.

In 2017, former Lincoln residents Joshua and Stacy Nehring lost their teenage daughter in a fatal car crash.

Since then, the family has been helping others cope with grief through service.

Together, the pair created a non-profit called SRVIVRS, which supports people who have lost a loved one or friend.

Lilli Nehring

The run started from the gravesite of their daughter Lilli Nehring in Rapid City, South Dakota, on June 3 and made its way across South Dakota with its first Capitol Tour stop in Pierre.

They will be in Nebraska next and will arrive in Lincoln on June 20. A special ceremony will be held on the Nebraska State Capitol steps that afternoon from 3:30-4:30 p.m.

“No one has ever run from capitol to capitol across our country for grief awareness. Just like in running, grief can feel isolating, but is best accomplished with the support of those around you,” Joshua said. “My calling is to serve others in knowing they aren’t alone. Grief is something we all share from the cornfields to the mountains to the coasts.”

The Nehring’s named the Tour the “Black Pearl Project” because as Joshua believes, “Over time, beauty can emerge from overcoming stress and challenges – just like a rare pearl found in the ocean.”

A giant baseball card was made for Willie Mays before his death

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC /Gray News) - An oversized baseball card honoring Willie Mays was unveiled Tuesday in Alabama as part of an effort to honor different Black baseball players.

Fox Sports partnered with Fanatics in a six-stop tour leading up to the MLB game on June 20 at Rickwood Field.

Each stop on the tour featured an oversized baseball trading card of a different Negro Leagues Legend.

All of the cards are a whopping 24 by 16 feet.

The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute was the last stop on FOX Sports and Fanatics tour across the country. The Tuesday event featured an oversized baseball card designed by former MLB player and artist Micah Johnson, honoring Mays.

Mays died on the same Tuesday, June 18, at the age of 93.

“Willie Mays started here at the Birmingham Black Barons at just 16 years old,” Sami Polanco, manager of brand and partnership marketing at Fox Sports said. “He then went on to play for the New York and San Francisco Giants.”

Rickwood Field is the oldest professional ballpark in the United States, and from 1924 to 1960 it was home to the Birmingham Black Barons.

“There’s just so much that we need to honor and be a part of, and I think this was … we’d be remiss not to be here in Birmingham for a game celebrating the Negro Leagues,” Polanco said. “There are so many great legends that came from this field.”

Polanco said the Negro Leagues were fundamental in the history of baseball, and their contributions made the sport what it is today.

“The Negro Leagues were the reason why a lot of plays and records were made that unfortunately had not been established in our record,” she said.

Birmingham resident Jade-Gracie Griffin is proud to live somewhere that honors the Negro Leagues and their contributions to baseball.

“I really love to be a part of the whole celebration of the Negro League, especially with Juneteenth coming up, it’s a really special thing to be a part of,” Griffin said.

For the past six weeks, FOX Sports and Fanatics have been releasing the cards one at a time, which can be seen here .

On Thursday, all of the collectible cards will be available for purchase.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

volleyball tour

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

volleyball tour

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

volleyball tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

volleyball tour

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

volleyball tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

volleyball tour

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis
