• Borneo power voltage is 230/240 V 50 Hz; Power sockets G.
• The island itself is divided among three countries:  Malaysia  and  Brunei  in the north, and  Indonesia  to the south.
• The Borneo currency is the Malaysian Ringett (MYR) and is around 4 MYR to 1 USD. In Brunei the Brunei Dollar and Singapore Dollar (notes only) are readily accepted. In the south the currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) and is around 13,000 IDR  for 1 USD.
• Air-conditioned  express buses  are the economical way to travel long distances within, and sometimes between, Borneo’s different states
• Borneo is home to one of the oldest rainforests in the world – around 130 million years old.

Budget:  You can stay at budget hotels in Borneo for as low as $10 US per night. They may include free Wi-Fi, private bathrooms, and have air conditioning.

Mid Range:  There are mid-range hotels available in Borneo for around $30 US. They often include complimentary breakfast, are found in the city center, and have laundry service.

High End:  High-end hotels in Borneo start around $60 per night. They may include family suites, indoor and outdoor pools, and offer airport transfers.

Getting to Borneo:  There are no direct flights from Borneo from Europe or North America, so you’ll have to connect at an Asian city such as Singapore or Hong Kong.

Transportation:

Buses : You can take buses within the city as well as across the country starting at B$18.

Taxis:   Taxis are found in the major cities, but you’ll always want to confirm if the driver is using the meter or not so you know the price in advance.

Car Rental:  Car rentals in Borneo begin at B$60 a day. Check for prices and availability here.

When to go To Borneo

• March through October is the best time to visit Borneo, as this is when the weather is the most pleasant and driest. You also have the best chance of seeing wildlife during these months.

Seven Boutique Hotel  – This hotel is a great choice to stay at when you’re in Putatan. It’s only 3 miles away from the airport and the hotel offers a free airport shuttle service. They also are a few minute’s walk away from restaurants, bars, and a grocery store.

What to Pack for Borneo

Borneo is hot and humid with a typically  tropical climate . Sarawak receives an abundance of rainfall during the  monsoon  season which falls between November and February of each year, whereas the dry season generally occurs from May to October. 

Heavy rains may cause cancellation of flights and riverboat trips into remote regions, so the dry season is best for activities.

• The protection basics  – Travellers should stock up on the essentials: sun block, mosquito/insect repellant containing DEET or a pyrethroid insecticide, sunglasses and a hat. If you will be spending time in national parks or upriver areas (e.g. Batang Ai & Nanga Sumpa), make sure to bring a strong mosquito repellent that contains 30-50% DEET.  Use this in the jungle and interior and bring it from home as it might be hard to find in Borneo.
• Pack for Humidity  – for humid weather it is best to pack fabrics that breathe as much as possible and natural fabrics, like cotton, linen or rayon (avoiding silk, wool and polyester). Clothing should be loose and comfortable to encourage the flow of air and allow moisture to evaporate.
• Sarongs  – From protecting yourself from the hot island sun, covering up at religious sites or keeping warm on a cool night, sarongs are a must-have.
• Raincoat / Jacket –  rain gear is always a good idea, as is a light jacket for the cooler temperatures at Mt Kinabalu.
• Water bottle –  Water is not potable in Borneo – do not drink or even brush your teeth with tap water.

Here are some of the most popular tourist destinations on the island of Borneo.

• Mulu Caves in Malaysia – These limestone caves are located in the Gunung Mulu National Park and are a popular destination for adventure-seekers. The park offers a variety of cave-related activities, including the famous “Headhunter’s Trail,” a challenging hike that takes visitors through a series of dark and narrow limestone caves.  
• Sandakan Memorial Park in Malaysia – This park is dedicated to the memory of the prisoners of war who were held in Sandakan during World War II. The park features a museum and a number of monuments, including a replica of the original Sandakan camp. It is a place of historical significance and a powerful reminder of the atrocities of war.  
• Ulu Temburong National Park in Brunei – This park is known for its untouched rainforest and offers visitors the chance to explore the rainforest canopy via a system of elevated walkways. The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including the Proboscis monkey, which is native to Borneo.  
• Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Indonesia – This center is located in the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation and is dedicated to the conservation and protection of the endangered orangutan population. Visitors can observe the orangutans being rehabilitated and learn about the work being done to protect these amazing animals.  
• Tanjung Puting National Park in Indonesia – This park is located in the heart of Borneo and is home to a variety of wildlife, including the endangered Bornean elephant, the Bornean orangutan, and the clouded leopard. Visitors can take a traditional “Klotok” boat trip along the Sekonyer River to explore the park and see the wildlife up close.  

Wildlife and Nature

The island of Borneo is home to many unique and endangered species, such as the orang utan, proboscis monkey, the Borneo Rhino, the Pygmy Elephant, as well as the Green and Hawsbill Turtle. More wildlife is discovered by the scientists who live and conduct research in the many national parks, rainforests, mountains and remote regions on the island. Several conservation projects have been set up in Brunei, Sabah, Sarawak, and Kalimantan in collaboration with local governments, the WWF, research institutions, nature and other wildlife and nature and environmental not for profit organisations.

Borneo Travel and Tourism

Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei, and Kalimantan are easily reachable by plane from abroad. Borneo has several international airports. More distant travel within Sabah, Sarawak, Kalimantan, or Brunei mostly takes place by plane or boat. There is a wide selection of hotels, resorts, inns, guest houses and backpackers available to cater for tourists, business travellers and expatriates alike.

Borneo Holidays

Borneo has become a very popular holiday destination in recent years. Polular Borneo holidays include adventure holidays, jungle trekking holidays, beach holidays, orang utan and wildlife safaries, bird watching, and diving. Many visitors spend their honeymoon, Chinese New Year, Easter or Christmas at one of the many top resort hotels. Many popular tourist hotels and resorts are located only a few miles outside Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, as well as outside Kuching or Miri in Sarawak, which are great starting points for many Borneo tours to its wildlife, nature and cultural attractions.

Sports and Outdoor Activities

Borneo’s rainforest landscape exerts an irresistible pull on anyone dreaming of a genuinely extraordinary trip, and it really does have it all: wildlife, adventure, culture and some of the best beaches in Asia. Whether floating down the Kinabatangan River in search of gibbons, pygmy elephants and orangutans, walking through the treetop canopy in the Danum Valley, or diving around its idyllic northern islands, the possibility of extraordinary wildlife encounters is never far away. Add in excellent infrastructure, and the bonus of a surprising amount of easy travel by road, and you’re looking at a phenomenal holiday experience.

Sanctuary in the jungle

Sepilok's criss-cross of raised boardwalks make it a near certainty that you’ll spot an orangutan or two at some point. This well-established, well-known nature sanctuary has feeding platforms, walkways and even a nursery play area for the youngest orangs. Whilst visitors must maintain a respectful distance, the orangutans do sometimes come very close of their own accord! Feeding times turn the sanctuary into a raucous raft of noise, and hourly educational talks offer informative learning about the surrounding habitat. Visiting Sepilok is a must on a trip to Borneo. Not only will you get to experience orangutans in their natural habitat, but you'll also find out some on-the-ground details about the continuing conservation and animal welfare projects.

Relax in rainforest style

There’s nothing to compare to a stay at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge in the Danum Valley.  The perfect end to a day’s safari in Sabah has to be sipping a chilled glass of something fizzy whilst sitting on a wooden veranda overlooking the Danum River. Booking into this unique eco-lodge surrounded by jungle allows you to do just that. Stilted wooden chalets and bungalows provide comfort and privacy as well as access to rainforest trails, tropical gardens and a suspended canopy walkway. Evenings at open-sided restaurants offer the chance to socialise or enjoy candle-lit meals for two, whilst nocturnal jungle walks round the day off on a high.

Gaya Island hideaway

You can lose yourself on Gaya Island, in every sense. Whether it's underwater, being captivated by clams, clownfish and colourful coral gardens, or hiking through jungles where monkeys, giant moths and bearded pigs may make an appearance, this is an island that sings with adventure but also allows you to unwind and enjoy some absolutely splendid food. You can stay in a hillside villa, surrounded by thick forest, or enjoy a rooftop dining experience under a blanket of stars. Visit the Marine Ecology Research Centre, or stroll across a sand-dusted pontoon and watch rays swimming underneath. Whatever you set your sights on, Gaya Island is an accessible option that ticks a lot of boxes.

The hosts were very attentive, helpful and kind. They made sure that our every need was addressed. They even accommodated for a slightly later check out due to some issues we had. Very updated look + free upgrade to a window room. It is easy to see they take great pride in their accommodations and a positive experience for their guests. Loved our stay here and would come again.

Perfect hub semporna.

Check in was quick and staff friendly. The place is very clean, rooms are in neat design and comfy japanese style. Very clean bathrooms. Common area mezzanine is comfortable, you get free cold & warm water as well as tea and coffee during the day, great! Shops and laundry nearby and about 15-20 mins of walk from the center where all tours departs. I had a great stay, it gets a 9/10 just because I had slightly better value for money in Malaysia & Borneo.

Kinabatangan Wildlife Lodge

We did 4 cruises with this hotel and saw all of Borneo's big 5 and much much more! Our amazing guide was enthusiastic and passionate about wildlife. He is also very respectful of the animals. The accommodation was an experience in itself set up a hill surrounded by nature. We loved it. There are rooms closer to the restaurant which we was supposed to stay in but I asked if we could go a little further away for more privacy. Glad they accommodated us!

Bee Homestay - Jesselton Quay Kota Kinabalu

We booked 2 entire apartments to stay for Borneo Half Marathon event in Padang Merdeka KK. Everything was good, clean and comfortable. Host is very kind and fast respond. The views were amazing, especially when you go to 32nd floor where the gym and deck got sunset view. Absolutely worth the penny!

It's very central, an easy walk to the waterfront, Carpenter Road and Borneo Culture Museum. As a female solo traveler I could connect to many nice people and the hostel staff is providing information about the main activities in Kuching, how to take public transport etc.

The location is within walking distance from the Borneo Cultural Museum and Sarawak River. Many eating places are nearby including shopping malls. The place has unique vintage vibes and the counter staff are ever helpful. Overall we had a fun and enjoyable stay.

The Borneo hotel is a veteran in Kuching, now several decades in the business and nicely renovated during the pandemic. It's a competent mid-range option with a good central location - the waterfront and various sights are less than 15 minutes’ walk away.

The room was really comfy and clean. The pool was amazing. Crazy view on the river. Amazing sunset. Perfect location if you have a conference at the Borneo center. There is also a tiny shop directly at the hotel which is useful.

(1) Pullman Miri’s location is good. it is closed to Miri Times Square, Borneo Heritage Market, etc. (2) It has good restaurants in the proximity. (3) The hotel rooms are spacious.

Enjoy the changing landscapes of the regenerating forests to virgin rainforests of millions years old. Check into the lodge upon arrival and settle in. Meet your guide and enjoy lunch. After a short rest, your guide will give you an introduction to the Borneo rainforest and the trails surrounding the lodge. After dinner, go on a guided night safari to spot nocturnal creatures.

Wake up to the calls of Borneo Gibbons and start your day with a guided trek to the viewpoint and burial site – Coffin Cliff. Take a short break by the natural pool for a refreshing dip before returning for lunch at the lodge. In the afternoon, go on optional activities such as guided jungle trekking, or weather permitting, water tubing session down the Danum River. Guided night walk on the nature trail after dinner.

What to see in Borneo: our highlights guide

Wildlife plays a big role in any visit to Borneo. Although it’s Asia’s largest island, the rainforests that cover Borneo are relatively compact, so when you go looking for the wildlife you see it. Many of the colorful animals that inhabit the rainforests are native to the island, such as pygmy elephants and hornbills. And, it’s one of the few places where you can see orangutans in the wild.

Borneo’s sheer valleys shelter tribal peoples, and staying as the guest of the Iban tribe is a glimpse into a way of life that has altered little in thousands of years.

Trekkers can take on the arduous but rewarding climb up Mount Kinabalu , and the sandy beaches and crystal-blue waters that fringe the coast offer some of the best dive spots in the world.

This guide features my recommendations for things to do in Borneo. It focuses on the states of Sabah and Sarawak in Malaysian Borneo, which offer a lot more variety in a smaller radius than Indonesian Borneo .

Experience Kuching’s colonial history

Kuching is a quirky and colorful low-rise market city, one of my favorites in Southeast Asia, and a great start point to a trip to Borneo. You can see past the city into the hills, the atmosphere is hot and muggy, and the rainforest feels close by.

The city has been bounced about in ownership, resulting in a strong mix of colonial, Malay, Chinese and tribal influences. 

To get a feel for the history, I’d recommend taking a walking tour with a local guide who grew up in Kuching. Spend three or four hours exploring the city, walking through the busy, gritty markets.

There are all types of wares — anything from live animals to herbs, roots and medicines, and bright colored cloths — and food stalls. One dish I always look for is laksa, a mild Thai-inspired soup. It comes in many different types, my favorite is thick with noodles and vegetables.

Strolling along the riverfront, you’ll pass modern hotels and restaurants on one side, and little houses perched on stilts on the other, a village where the city has grown around it.

Explore the caves in a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Walking into the caves of Mulu National Park is like entering an aircraft hangar. The sensation is one of being enveloped in a darkness that seems to stretch on forever. This is one of the world’s largest limestone cave networks.

The park is in Sarawak, in the top middle of Borneo, easily accessible from Kuching. Once there, you explore by boat or on foot.

If you time your trip for dawn or dusk, you might see an immense black cloud of thousands of bats that head in and out of the caves to feast on huge amounts of mosquitos at night.

From the caves you can take a couple of days to trek the Headhunters’ Trail, a remote route through lush rainforest. The overnight stay is with the local Iban community , a traditional headhunting tribe, in their communal longhouse.

To extend the trek another night, climb the rugged Mount Api to view the Pinnacles, limestone formations that look like jagged teeth sticking out toward the sky. This is one of the hardest, yet accessible treks you can take on in Borneo — I scrambled up rocks for the last couple of kilometers — but the fact that not many people do it only adds to the sense of achievement.

Trek in Bako National Park

Bako National Park is only an hour away from Kuching. A coastal reserve, it’s only accessible by boat, so coming and going is timed with the tide and requires a little flexibility.

The park is an ecosystem of mangroves that meet steep cliffs, very different to Borneo’s other parks. It’s a habitat where pitcher plants (shaped like jugs with a lid that closes in on trapped insects) and wild orchids grow freely.

Walking through the forest, the chirping of crickets and other insects creates a constant murmur. The movement around you might be a bright red hornbill flying overhead, a proboscis monkey swinging in the trees or a flying squirrel.

Bako National Park’s terrain and well-signed trails makes it well suited to first-time trekking. I’d recommend walking for a couple of hours before stopping on the beach for a Malay picnic lunch and a swim before heading back to Kuching.

Although the park is never crowded, for the best experience, I recommend staying overnight. Whilst the accommodation is basic, the day-visitors tend to arrive mid-morning and leave mid-afternoon due to the tides, so staying overnight allows you to make the most of the park at its most peaceful.

Climb Mount Kinabalu

Scaling Mount Kinabalu  represents one of Borneo’s great trekking opportunities .

Your first day is a journey through rainforest, staying the night in the Kinabalu National Park . You then leave the rainforest behind to make your way up through the clouds to the basecamp for food and an early night. The next morning, it’s a 3am start to make it to the summit (at just over 4,000 m) in time for sunrise.

It’s not a climb for the faint-hearted, you need a good degree of fitness (at some points you have to pull yourself up by rope), but you’re on top of Borneo when you make it. Standing on the summit, above the clouds, is like being on a rugged, lunar landscape with the sparkle of head-lamps of other trekkers trailing down the mountain behind you.

See orangutans up close

There’s something magical about seeing orangutans in the wild, but the Sepilok Sanctuary gives you the chance to see them up close. It’s a rehabilitation center, where orphaned and rescued orangutans are brought up so they can be reintroduced back into the wild.

During the morning and afternoon feeding sessions, orangutans sweep down from the trees for their meal. Once they’re mature enough to survive on their own, the idea is that they stop coming back. The sanctuary is open to the surrounding rainforest and wild orangutans sometimes wander in to join feeding sessions.

The sanctuary is only 20 minutes from where you fly in at Sandakan , and it combines really well with a trip on the Kinabatangan River to see orangutans in the wild.

There are resorts right next door, where orangutans from the sanctuary have been known to wander through the restaurant having dropped in over the sanctuary fence.

If you could only choose one place in Borneo to see animals in the wild, you can’t beat a riverboat trip on the Kinabatangan River . The riverbanks are common rest spots for monkeys, orangutans and pygmy elephants.

The team on your boat will always endeavor to track down the wildlife. At the end of my last trip, my guide got a call to say elephants were up-river and we headed in that direction. Rounding the river bend, we were confronted with a huge herd of pygmy elephants scattered on the banks and playing in the water.

Enjoy a headhunter’s tribe stay

Borneo’s Iban people have a colorful history of headhunting and one of their tribes lives next to a remote stretch of the Lemanak River in Sarawak, a four-hour drive from Kuching. Visiting the tribe and staying overnight in their longhouse was one of my most memorable experiences in Borneo.

Accompanied by a guide, you travel there in a canoe and are greeted by the chief. It’s customary to take a gift that’s shared between the families. It’s a good idea to take something useful for cooking (I took shrimp paste). At evening time, all the villagers come together for dinner. Dancing and drinking rice wine follows, and the evening usually turns into a party.

About 12 families live in the longhouse. The back is divided into sections for sleeping and cooking, and the front is the communal space, where guests sleep on a mattress under a mosquito net.

The number of travelers staying at one time is limited, and balanced against Borneans who also visit, to limit the intrusion on a tribe still learning to balance tradition with aspects of modern living.

Borneo Rainforest Lodge in Danum Valley

Danum Valley is a protected area of rainforest, a few hours’ drive from the small town of Lahad Datu. Although one of the more expensive places to visit in Borneo, its remote location and opportunity to explore pristine jungle, makes it worth the cost.

The Borneo Rainforest Lodge is set in the heart of the jungle beside the Danum River. You’ll wake to the sound of gibbons in the morning and probably have monkeys jumping on your chalet roof at night.

From the lodge there are some high-canopy walks through the rainforest. Listen to the melodies of hundreds of species of birdlife, and look for cheeky red-leaf monkeys with inquisitive blue faces.

Visit Gaya Island

Borneo can be a really busy trip, so it’s nice to finish somewhere you can put your feet up.

Gaya Island is on the edge of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. It’s only 20 minutes by speedboat from Kota Kinabalu , the capital of Sabah state and most likely your departure point for the flight back home.

There are two wonderful resorts that I’d recommend here: the Bunga Raya and Gaya Island Resort .

Discover small, hidden coves with soft, pale-yellow sand that ripples between your toes. For snorkeling or diving, there are around 60 magnificent dive spots where you might catch glimpse of a leopard eel and swim among brilliant-blue rays, as I did.

The number of young ecotourists backpacking in Borneo grows every year – most heading to Sabah and Sarawak in the Malaysian part of the island, while few visit Brunei or the Indonesian Kalimantan. What’s the backpacker scene in Borneo like?

Backpacking in Borneo isn’t on the same scale as in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi in West Malaysia. Relatively few take the two-hour flight to Sabah and Sarawak and even fewer visit Brunei and Kalimantan. But those who do make the journey are often lured by the ecotourism and chance to see the awesome native wildlife in Borneo . Most towns and cities are near the jungle, national parks and cultural heritage sites. But don’t expect late nights and a party scene outside Kota Kinabalu in Sabah or Kuching in Sarawak. That’s particularly true for Brunei, which adheres to Sharia law. However, you should expect to have nature-based experiences like nowhere else in Southeast Asia.

Get into the rainforest

From the Danum Valley and Maliau Basin in Sabah to the jungle covering 80 percent of Sarawak, Borneo is best discovered through nature. When the rainforest is accessible, make the most of it by hiking near Kota Kinabalu, the state capital of Sabah, or visiting reserves such as Bako National Park in Kuching.

Take your time

Experiencing the best ecotourism activities and wildlife in Borneo takes time and patience. It may take several hours to reach the secluded homes of wild proboscis monkeys, or to visit orangutan rehabilitation centres and world-class diving spots.

Embrace the ethnic diversity and culture

Borneo is among the most diverse regions for wildlife, landscapes and culture on the planet. The Dayak people, or the indigenous peoples of Borneo, include the Iban and Murut, the Bajau Laut ‘Sea Nomads’ and formerly pagan/animist Kadazan-Dusun. The Cultural Village in Kuching and the Monsopiad Cultural Village near Kota Kinabalu showcase their customs and traditions.

How to stay safe while travelling through Borneo

Avoiding theft.

Most people backpacking in Borneo encounter fewer risks compared to West Malaysia. But you shouldn’t let your guard down. Cities transform after dark. Foreigners might get unwanted attention and petty theft is a concern. Be vigilant with possessions at all times. Drive-by bag snatching on motorbikes is common too, especially after dark. Solo female travellers are also likely to experience catcalls and unwanted male attention throughout Malaysian Borneo, especially in some parts of Kota Kinabalu.

Security concerns in East Sabah

The eastern part of Sabah from Kudat, the northernmost tip of Borneo, to Lahad Datu towards the southeast is designated as the Eastern Sabah Security Zone . Ongoing territorial disputes between Sabah and Sulu culminated when around 100 armed insurgents attempted to invade in February 2013. Regional security is high and land and sea travel restrictions apply as of 2018. Foreign tourists have been targeted as hostages for ransom in Eastern Sabah too. Piracy is a concern in the waters off the coast of Sabah and through the Straits of Melaka. While this is unlikely to affect anyone backpacking in Borneo, consult your foreign office for travel warnings before making any plans.

Food and accommodation

Cheap stays in borneo.

Affordable accommodation that’s suitable for backpackers in Borneo is easy to find in towns and cities. Hostel beds in major cities such as Kota Kinabalu start from as little as RM40 ($10.20) or less per night, while budget-friendly hotels and guesthouses often begin at RM80 ($20.40). Be aware that non-Malaysians need to pay RM10 ($2.60) per room per night as a tourist tax. Finding budget accommodation in Brunei is more challenging. Anticipate spending two to three times more than in Sabah and Sarawak. As Kalimantan is relatively unexplored, cheaper options are often more limited.

Affordable food in Sabah, Sarawak and Kalimantan

Sabah and Sarawak offer the typical selection of Malay, Indian and Chinese dishes as well as Dayak specialities in some restaurants. The cost of meals in Sabah tends to be slightly higher than in Kuala Lumpur, but will still come to less than RM20 ($5.10). Sarawak, especially Kuching, has a reputation for delicious and ultra-affordable meals. Expect a dish in some restaurants to cost as little as RM5 ($1.30). Foodies backpacking in Borneo can enjoy street food and meals at family-owned restaurants and food courts. Anyone crossing the border into Brunei will find a meal is much more expensive while Kalimantan offers spicy Indonesian favourites at prices similar to Sarawak.

How to make friends in Borneo

If you want to chat to the local people, cultural events (especially those with few foreigners) are gold mines – just make sure to learn a couple of Malay phrases before you go. Drivers, restaurant staff and coffee shop customers are excellent sources of information too. In Malaysian Borneo, take advantage of Meetup.com , a website where locals advertise activities such as hiking trips. Backpackers tend to hang out in hostels and bars. Tourists visiting Brunei and Kalimantan might face more challenges.

What to do with your money in Borneo

Exchange your cash.

All tourists need to change money into ringgits, and it’s better to do this in the country. Rates in Malaysian Borneo, Kalimantan and Brunei tend to be quite good and probably better than back home. Change some at the airport and exchange the rest in the city.

Bring larger denominations and major currencies in Sabah and Sarawak

Malaysia and Malaysian Borneo offer different rates for different denominations. You’ll get better value by changing a $100 bill than a $20, and not all accept lower-value notes. Unlike other Southeast Asian destinations, such as Cambodia or Laos, it’s not advisable to go backpacking in Borneo with $1 bills.

Take all the cash you need when exploring nature

Tourists want to explore the vast rainforests and exotic islands of Borneo. But don’t expect to find ATMs or currency exchange offices in the jungle, on islands or in rural villages. Anyone backpacking in Borneo who plans to go off the beaten path should bring plenty of ringgits.

Where to go when backpacking in Borneo

Tunku abdul rahman marine park and pulau tiga, sabah.

The first port of call after arriving in Kota Kinabalu is to jump on a speedboat and hop between the islands visible from the shore. Tunku Abdul Rahman is a group of five islands, with Manukan the favourite for beaches and snorkelling. Pulau Tiga, a little further away, was featured on the first season of TV series Survivor . Expect a desert island with an unusual mud volcano in the centre.

Danum Valley Conservation Area, Sabah

Deep in the Sabah jungle lies the Danum Valley, an ecotourism paradise. Approximately two hours west of Lahad Datu, the conservation area combines research facilities with the chance to experience the rainforest. Wildlife, including orangutans and pygmy elephants among many others, call this area home. Hostel beds and chalets are available for overnight stays.

Gunung Mulu National Park, Sarawak

Sarawak, the largest state in Malaysia, is best known for its cave systems. Unesco-listed Gunung Mulu National Park has a series of jagged limestone cliffs and caves, including the most voluminous chamber in the world: the Sarawak Chamber. Three summits of the surrounding mountains exceed 1,500m (4,921ft).

Niah National Park, Sarawak

Archaeologists discovered what are believed to be some of the earliest human remains in Asia dating back approximately 40 millennia inside caves in Niah. The national park, one of 25 in Sarawak and a popular day trip from Miri, has rock art, boat-shaped coffins and an abundance of edible bird nests.

Derawan Island, Kalimantan

In east Kalimantan, Derawan is a relatively unexplored island with white beaches, thousands of turtles and a reputation for world-class diving. Expect to see stone fish, grouper, snapper as well as ghost pipefish and a plethora of colourful corals. Both day and night dives are available. Most tourists stay in the overwater bungalows.

Bucket-list experiences in Borneo

See an orangutan.

Everyone recognises the orange-haired primate of Borneo and Sumatra. But, with increasing deforestation and human activity, seeing one in the wild isn’t easy. Lucky tourists might catch a glimpse at Danum Valley, along the Kinabatangan River or in Bako National Park. If not, head to rehabilitation centres such as Sepilok near Sandakan in Sabah and the Matang Wildlife Centre in Sarawak to see baby or orphaned orangutans nursed back to health.

Dance at the Rainforest World Music Festival

The Rainforest World Music Festival is an annual three-day cultural event in the jungle near Kuching. With Mount Santubong in the background, musicians from around the globe descend on Sarawak in July. Activities include mini-concerts, folk and traditional music, plus other arts and culture-related activities. Tickets aren’t cheap and it might feel like a splurge if you’re budget backpacking in Borneo. But attending a jungle concert isn’t an everyday experience.

Scuba dive to see underwater wonders

Head from the shores and find dozens of islands and hundreds of diving spots. From snorkelling in the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park near Kota Kinabalu to spending a day diving at Sipadan, both in Sabah, the diversity of coral and marine life is stunning.

This Gorgeous Island in the Bahamas Has Ultra-exclusive Hotels, Fresh Seafood, and the Largest Concentration of Blue Holes in the World

How to plan a perfect trip to Andros Island in the Bahamas, including where to stay, what to do, and when to visit.

The largest of the Bahamas’ 30 inhabited islands, Andros encompasses 100 miles of clear coastline, abundant wildlife, and an intricate underwater system that sits close to the third-largest barrier reef in the world. But despite its size, the island, composed of North Andros, Mangrove Cay, and South Andros, has plenty of unpopulated stretches, without a cruise ship or all-inclusive in sight. Instead, visitors can expect deserted beaches and flats that make the destination the bonefishing capital of the world.

As the gateway to a deepwater basin called the Tongue of the Ocean, diving in the sweeping Andros Barrier Reef is one of the best things to do in the Bahamas , alongside exploring the largest concentration of blue sinkholes in the region (and the world).

The island’s colorful capital, North Andros, is home to a Seminole Indian population that specializes in woodwork and hand-dyeing cotton Androsia fabric. And in Central Andros, historical sites include the over century-old St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the dive-ready Blue Holes National Park.

There are also accommodations for every type of traveler, from private island hideaways to world-renowned fishing lodges. In fact, Andros’ hotels are as desirable as the island itself: Both Kamalame Cay and Caerula Mar Club landed on Travel + Leisure 's list of favorite Caribbean resorts in 2023 .

If you time your visit right, you can even attend one of the annual events, like June's All Andros Crab Festival and May’s Red Bays Snapper Tournament , where the island’s native Seminole Indians compete in basket-weaving and fishing competitions . “Andros is a truly wonderful place. Caerula Mar Club 

The beachfront Caerula Mar Club features 18 warm-toned rooms and four villas on the remote South Andros — home to about 2,000 residents. There are two on-site casual eateries — Driff’s Beach Bar and Switcha — plus Lusca, a Caribbean-inspired fine-dining establishment. The passion project was envisioned by HGTV's Bryan and Sarah Baeumler, who describe the hotel as “barefoot luxury.”

Kamalame Cay 

This 96-acre private island haven has 22 rooms and suites that include a mix of cottages, bungalows, and Balinese-style beach houses. Guests receive their own golf carts to explore the island, as well as get access to water sports like kayaking, fishing, and snorkeling. Plus, the property is coveted for its prime location near the Andros Barrier Reef. 

Small Hope Bay Lodge 

Located in Central Andros, Small Hope Bay Lodge overlooks the Andros Barrier Reef, offering world-class diving, including shark and night dives. The 21 all-inclusive rooms sit directly on a beach that's just 15 minutes from wall dives and deep, open drops. The lodge is also a mere six miles from the popular Cousteau and Captain Bill’s Blue Holes. 

Swain's Cay Lodge

The Bahamian-owned Swain's Cay Lodge in Mangrove Cay is a favorite for bonefishing and aquatic adventurers. Owner Cheryl Bastian is happy to coordinate excursions, including picnic lunches and wildlife spotting. As for its culinary assets, the on-site Reefside Restaurant & Bar offers beachside dining.

Tiamo Resort 

Accessible only by seaplane or boat, this 14-room resort on South Andros offers luxury accommodations and French-inspired cuisine. Raise a red flag and a butler will come to your thatched-roof villa just steps away from the beach. Surrounded by 125 acres of nature preserve, the eco-chic resort also has activities such as reef fishing, diving, and wakeboarding.

Delve into world-class scuba diving.

The Andros Barrier Reef is the world’s third-longest barrier reef, teeming with vibrant marine life that can be viewed on dive excursions for more than 130 miles. With a large concentration of blue holes and caverns, you won’t have any trouble discovering the rich reef system and landscapes below. 

Try deep-sea and fly fishing. 

Known as the bonefish capital of the world, Andros is home to a collection of natural flats, particularly on the north and west side of the island. Catch and release a bonefish or fish for bigger game like yellowfin tuna and barracuda. “Our fishing product is resilient, and the avid anglers who travel worldwide come back again year after year to seek the thrilling adventure of the bonefish, tarpon, and elusive permit,” says Bastian. 

Explore national parks.

Andros has five protected national parks, including West Side National Park, which stretches more than 1.5 million acres with dense mangroves and a nursery habitat that’s critical to the bonefishing ecosystem. There’s also the Blue Holes National Park, home to 40,000 acres that include freshwater reservoirs and blue holes.

There are more than 180 of these natural wonders on the island, and some popular spots include the Stargate Blue Hole, El Dorado, and Benjamin’s Blue Hole. Many hotels and diving sites also offer tours into these underwater relics.

Shine’s Conch Shack

This popular seaside shack is owned by Ornald "Shine" Greene, a bonefishing guide who's happy to tell a story or two about the island. During certain times, you’ll even catch fishermen loading their catch of the day and taking it directly to the restaurant. Make sure to order the conch or ceviche, best washed down with an ice-cold Kalik beer.

Brigadier's Restaurant  

This scenic restaurant has over-water seating on a pier at Dream Villas in Central Andros. The menu features both Bahamian and American cuisine, including cracked conch and chicken fettuccine. Enjoy the soothing sound of waves in this casual, alfresco setting that specializes in fresh seafood.

Millie’s Takeaway

For a taste of South Androsian food, head to resident Millie’s restaurant. Here, visitors can enjoy conch burgers, Johnny cakes, and a number of other Bahamian foods. You can take your food to go and enjoy it on a nearby beach. 

Best Time to Visit 

The best time to visit Andros for good weather is mid-December to April, but it’s important to note this is also the high season, which sees more crowds and higher prices. The summer months of June and July feature big festivals, like the All Andros & Berry Islands Regatta and All Andros Crab Fest. 

How to Get There 

Airlines such as Aztec Airways, Makers Air, Titan Air, and LeAir Charter offer weekly flights directly to Andros Town Airport (ASD) from Nassau, Bahamas, and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. To get to San Andros Airport (SAQ) in North Andros, book a flight on Western Air from Nassau, or Aztec Airways from the U.S. LeAir flies to South Andros Airport (TZN). 

How to Get Around

Rental cars and vans are available, with prices starting at $85 per day for the former and $120 per day for the latter. Note that some companies may require a deposit. There are no buses or other forms of public transportation on Andros. Taxi cabs are readily available at each airport on arrival.
