Travel: 2 new york city landmark churches.

The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York City.

One is a cathedral, the other is a church often mistaken for a cathedral.

Both are prominent New York City landmarks. They are also lasting legacies of Ralph Adams Cram.

Cram, who died in 1942 at the age of 78, was one of the most prominent architects in the late 1800s and early 1900s. A practicing Episcopalian, most of his ecclesiastical works were designed for Anglicans, though he also did churches for other denominations.

Outside Augustus W.N. Pugin , whose work in the first half of the 19th century in Britain defined Gothic revival, there are few with the legacy of Cram.

Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine

The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York City is hardly a typical church or cathedral.

The 121,000-square-foot cathedral, seat of the Episcopal bishop of New York, is the world’s largest cathedral. While there are bigger churches, none are, properly speaking, cathedrals.

The architectural masterpiece is primarily Gothic revival, but a careful read of the edifice reveals elements of Romanesque and Byzantine styles.

The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York City.

The original architects when construction started in 1892 were George Heins and Christopher LaFarge, who designed a cathedral in the then-fashionable style of Romanesque revival. By 1911, Heins died and the baton passed to acclaimed Cram. He morphed the design into a revival of 13th century French Gothic.

St. John the Divine could also be called St. John the Unfinished, as the cathedral lacks the millions of dollars required finish Cram’s design.

The differing designs become apparent inside with the pointed arches of Gothic giving way to a Byzantine-inspired dome and rounded Romanesque arches beyond the transepts. This is where the nave — many visitors mistakenly call the space where congregants primarily sit the sanctuary — transitions to both the chancel and the actual sanctuary containing the high altar.

St. Thomas Church

St. Thomas Church in New York City.

Unlike the cathedral, St. Thomas Church is finished.

The present building, the Episcopal parish’s fourth, sits on Fifth Avenue just down from the considerably more famous St. Patrick’s Cathedral, seat of the Roman Catholic archbishop of New York.

Widely considered one of the finest examples of Gothic revival, traditional masonry techniques were used in its construction between 1911 and 1914.

Everything about the design by Cram and partner Bertram G. Goodhue is seemingly perfect. Dominating the interior is the reredos — the screen behind the high altar.

Attributed to Goodhue and sculptor Lee Lawrie, the nearly floor-to-ceiling screen is among the largest in the world. At its focal point are sculptures of both Christ in Majesty and the cross of Calvary, though some 70 figures — Mary, the saints and, in the language of the Book of Prayer Book, all the company of Heaven — are also depicted.

The  Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine  is open to visitors from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 12-5 p.m. Sunday. Outside of religious services, admission is $15 for adults.

St. Thomas Church has a guided tour most Sundays after the principal 11 a.m. service. Doors are also open 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday to Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. No admission is charged.

Journey to Moscow

Welcome to Moscow - the capital of Russia, its political, scientific, historical, architectural and business centre, from which power and might of the Russian state developed.

Most Beautiful Metro Stations in Moscow

Most Beautiful Metro Stations in Moscow

Visiting Moscow? Get yourself a metro card and explore Moscow’s beautiful metro stations. Moscow’s world-famous metro system is efficient and a great way to get from A to B. But there is more to it; Soviet mosaic decorations, exuberant halls with chandeliers, colourful paintings and immense statues. Moscow’s metro is an attraction itself, so take half a day and dive into Moscow’s underground!

The best thing to do is to get on the brown circle (number 5) line since the most beautiful metro stations are situated on this line. The only exception is the metro stop Mayakovskaya one the green line (number 2). My suggestion is to get a map, mark these metro stops on there and hop on the metro. It helps to get an English > Russian map to better understand the names of the stops. At some of the metro stops, the microphone voice speaks Russian and English so it’s not difficult at all.

Another thing we found out, is that it’s worth taking the escalator and explore the other corridors to discover how beautiful the full station is.

Quick hotel suggestion for Moscow is the amazing Brick Design Hotel .

These are my favourite metro stations in Moscow, in order of my personal preference:

1. Mayakovskaya Station

The metro station of Mayakovskaya looks like a ballroom! Wide arches, huge domes with lamps and mosaic works make your exit of the metro overwhelming. Look up and you will see the many colourful mosaics with typical Soviet pictures. Mayakovskaya is my personal favourite and is the only stop not on the brown line but on the green line.

2. Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya metro station is famous for its yellow ceiling. An average museum is nothing compared to this stop. Splendour all over the place, black and gold, mosaic – again – and enormous chandeliers that made my lamp at home look like a toy.

3. Novoslobodskaya Station

The pillars in the main hall of Novoslobodskaya metro station have the most colourful stained glass decorations. The golden arches and the golden mosaic with a naked lady holding a baby in front of the Soviet hammer and sickle, make the drama complete.

4. Prospect Mira Station

The beautiful chandeliers and the lines in the ceiling, make Prospekt Mira an architectural masterpiece.

5. Belorusskaya Station

Prestigious arches, octagonal shapes of Socialistic Soviet Republic mosaics. The eyecatcher of Belorusskaya metro station, however, is the enormous statue of three men with long coats, holding guns and a flag.

6. Kiyevskaya Station

The metro station of Kiyevskaya is a bit more romantic than Belorusskaya and Prospect Mira. Beautiful paintings with classical decorations.

7. Taganskaya Station

At the main hall Taganskaya metro station you will find triangle light blue and white decorations that are an ode to various Russians that – I assume – are important for Russian history and victory. There is no need to explore others halls of Taganskaya, this is it.

8. Paveletskaya Station

Another and most definitely the less beautiful outrageous huge golden mosaic covers one of the walls of Paveletskaya. I would recommend taking the escalator to the exit upstairs to admire the turquoise dome and a painting of the St Basil’s Cathedral in a wooden frame.

It’s absolutely beautiful! Moscow is a great city trip destination and really surprised me in many ways.

My partner and I did a self guided Moscow Metro tour when we were there 2 years ago. So many breathtaking platforms…I highly recommend it! Most of my favorites were along the Brown 5 line, as well. I also loved Mayakovskaya, Arbatskaya, Aleksandrovski Sad and Ploshchad Revolyutsii. We’re heading back in a few weeks and plan to do Metro Tour-Part 2. We hope to see the #5 stations we missed before, as well as explore some of the Dark Blue #3 (Park Pobedy and Slavyansky Bul’var, for sure), Yellow #8 and Olive #10 platforms.

That’s exciting Julia! Curious to see your Metro Tour-Part 2 experience and the stations you discovered.

John Deere will pay up to $192K for a 'Chief Tractor Officer' to travel and help launch TikTok channel

  • John Deere is looking for a different kind of CTO — a Chief Tractor Officer.
  • The winner of the competition will help launch the agriculture equipment company's new TikTok channel.
  • Entries are accepted until April 29, with the finalists selected after May 17.

Insider Today

Agriculture equipment company John Deere is on the hunt for a different kid of CTO.

The brand on Tuesday announced a two-week search to find a "Chief Tractor Officer" who would create social media content to reach younger consumers .

One winning applicant will receive up to $192,300 to traverse the country over the next several months showcasing the way John Deere products are used by workers, from Yellowstone National Park to Chicago's Wrigley Field and beyond.

Related stories

"No matter what you do — whether it's your coffee, getting dressed in the morning, driving to work, the building you go into — it's all been touched by a construction worker, a farmer, or a lawn care maintenance group," Jen Hartmann, John Deere's global director of strategic public relations, told AdAge .

To kick off the search, John Deere tapped NFL quarterback Brock Purdy (who will presumably be a bit busy this Fall to take the job himself) to star in a clip in which he attempts to set out on a road trip in an industrial tractor.

Suited up in the obligatory vest, work boots, and John Deere hat, Purdy's progress is interrupted by teammate Colton McKivitz hopping into the cab while a string of messages floods in from other athletes and influencers expressing interest in the job.

The clip also represents the first time that the 187-year-old company has used celebrities to promote itself, Hartmann told AdAge.

According to the contest rules , entrants have until April 29 at midnight to submit a single 60-second video making their pitch for why they should be the face and voice of the company.

In addition, entrants must live in the 48 contiguous states or DC — sorry Hawaii and Alaska residents. Interestingly, any AI-generated submissions are prohibited, too.

Videos will be judged against four categories — originally, creativity, quality, and brand knowledge — after which five finalists will be chosen and notified after May 17.

Kiki Dee: ‘Elton John and I made bangers and mash in Barbados’

The singer on talent contests in blackpool, skiing for the first time in her fifties, partying with john lennon and meeting marvin gaye and stevie wonder in a lift.

Kiki Dee was invited to LA by Elton John

K iki Dee, 77, was born in Bradford as Pauline Matthews. In 1970 she became the first female artist from the UK to be signed to Motown Records and in 1976 duetted with Elton John on the worldwide hit Don’t Go Breaking My Heart. She was nominated for an Olivier award in 1988 for her role in the Blood Brothers musical. For the past 30 years she has performed as a duo with the guitarist Carmelo Luggeri. She lives in Hertfordshire.

I’ve always been self-reliant and good at travelling on my own. When I signed to Motown in my early twenties I went to Detroit for 12 weeks and would eat alone in restaurants, coping well in a different country without my family. Detroit felt like a city with a lot of heart, but I didn’t get to see much of it. I was there to record in the label’s original studio, which is now the Motown Museum — it was mind-blowing to meet Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye in the lift one day.

From ten years old I was very serious about singing and would enter (and usually win) talent contests while on holiday with my family in places such as Bridlington, Scarborough and Blackpool. I was the youngest of three siblings and a daddy’s girl, so it was great hanging out with him during his annual fortnight off work.

During my first time in London — in 1963, when I was 16 — I auditioned for a contract with Fontana Records. Dad drove me there from Bradford and we stayed at a B&B in Finchley, north London. The Fontana offices were by Marble Arch, in the centre of town, and it felt very glamorous — like being in a movie. Oxford Street is close by, so this was my first impression of London in the Sixties. Dad and I ate at a Lyons Corner House and we loved walking around the city.

I moved to London two years later, when the Swinging Sixties scene was kicking off. My friends and I would go to clubs like the Scotch of St James, meeting various bands.

I adored America in the Seventies because there was so much positivity, especially in Hollywood, where I was living at the time. There was a great music scene and I used to perform at the Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood — which is still going.

Kiki lost her passport on Maui

When I was touring with Elton in 1974 I lost my passport on Maui, Hawaii, and had to apply for a replacement. It was a bit of a hassle, but with Elton’s lawyers you can get anything done quickly. During another holiday with Elton and Bernie Taupin, on Barbados, we decided to make bangers and mash for the staff of the villa we were renting to show them British “cuisine”.

Davey Johnstone, my boyfriend at the time, was in Elton’s band and helped John Lennon to tune his guitars when he guested at Madison Square Garden in New York on Thanksgiving in 1974 — he hadn’t played live for ages, but had lost a bet with Elton and that was the forfeit. After the gig John came to our room at the Plaza Hotel with May Pang, who he was with dating at the time, and we spent the whole night drinking and chatting. There was a wonderful moment when he asked whether I had ever eaten potato scallops made with leftover batter in fish-and-chip shops — it was completely bonkers to talk about mundane northern matters with him and it felt good to connect.

When I lost my sister in 2021 Elton called me for a long chat and invited me to Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles as part of his last American tour the following year. It was a really difficult time and it felt special that he had asked me to perform with him. It was weird going back to LA because suddenly I was on the A-list again. Our duet was over in a flash, but the audience went nuts and I got to meet Joni Mitchell backstage. Elton really looked after me and I stayed at the London West Hollywood boutique hotel in West Hollywood. I was there for ten days, so I had a chance to hang out at the beach and nice restaurants such as the farm-to-table-style Gjelina, which is amazing. I shopped at vintage stores on Melrose Avenue near Beverly Hills; it’s great for people-watching around there.

I have loved performing around the world with Carmelo, because I haven’t been trying to make it as a pop star. We would like to do some shows in west Ireland and Scotland — places where there is real music heritage.

Kiki stayed at the Palmares Beach House Hotel in Portugal last year

I’ve been to Portugal many times and had a great holiday there last year, staying at the adults-only Palmares Beach House Hotel in Lagos. I loved the fado performance there — it’s very dramatic Portuguese folk music — though there were only four of us watching.

I skied for the first time when I was 55, in Sölden, in the Tyrol region of Austria, where we stayed at the wonderful Alphof hotel. I adored the skiing, but when I was having lessons the instructor said that my posture was so bad it looked as though I was on the loo. I managed some blue runs eventually, but not many reds. Still, I’m really glad I did it — it was a special thing to try and after that I went skiing a couple of times in the Italian resort of Pila with Carmelo and his family. Kiki Dee and Carmelo Luggeri will be performing and hosting music workshops alongside Paul Jones, Dave Kelly and Ben Waters at the Estate of Petroio in Tuscany from September 7 to 14 (rocknrollholidays.com)

Iran launches barrage of strikes toward Israel

By Tori B. Powell , Sophie Tanno, Emma Tucker , Kaanita Iyer , Paul LeBlanc and Adrienne Vogt , Jerome Taylor and James Legge, CNN

Our live coverage of Iran's attack on Israel has moved here .

Iran warns its response will be "stronger and more resolute" if Israel retaliates following latest strikes

From CNN’s Alireza Hajihosseini and Eyad Kourdi

An anti-missile system operates as seen from Ashkelon, Israel, on Sunday.

Iran has warned that it will respond with more force if Israel retaliates over this weekend's strikes, which Tehran said were themselves a reply to an Israeli attack earlier this month on its embassy complex in Syria's capital Damascus.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran will not hesitate to exercise its inherent right of self-defense when required," Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, said in a statement.

Citing self-defense against repeated Israeli military aggressions, Iravani said the strikes were specifically in retaliation to an Israeli attack on April 1 against what Iran says were diplomatic facilities in Damascus.

Iran claims the attack violated international law and led to the death of seven Iranian military advisors, including key commanders from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The statement also criticizes the United Nations Security Council for “failing to uphold international peace,” allowing Israel to “breach” established international norms and “escalate” regional tensions.

Additional context: Israel has carried out numerous strikes on Iran-backed targets in Syria, often targeting weapons shipments allegedly intended for Hezbollah, a powerful Iranian proxy in Lebanon.

Israel has not claimed responsibility for the April 1 attack which destroyed an Iranian consulate building in the capital Damascus, including Mohammed Reza Zahedi, a top Revolutionary Guards commander.

However an Israel Defense Forces spokesman told CNN that their intelligence showed the building was not a consulate and was instead “a military building of Quds forces disguised as a civilian building.”

China expresses 'deep concern', calls for ceasefire

From CNN's Philip Wang and Irene Nasser

China has expressed "deep concern" over the "current escalation" following Iran's attack on Israel, according to a spokesperson for its Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday, adding that it is a "spillover of the Gaza conflict" and a ceasefire should be implemented without delay.

In a statement, China called "on relevant parties to exercise calm and restraint to prevent further escalations."

"The ongoing situation is the latest spillover of the Gaza conflict," the spokesperson said, adding that a UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas should be implemented without any more delay.

Beijing did not  name or condemn Hamas  in the wake of the initial October 7 attacks. Since then, it has condemned the war and been a vocal  proponent of an immediate ceasefire  and the implementation of a “two-state” solution.

Last month, Chinese diplomat Wang Kejian met Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Qatar, the first meeting between a Chinese and Hamas official publicly acknowledged by Beijing since the outbreak of the  war in Gaza .

Wang’s visit follows efforts by Beijing to step up its profile as a  peace broker in the Middle East conflict.

US forces intercepted 70+ drones and at least three ballistic missiles, US officials say

From CNN's Oren Liebermann and Haley Britzky

US forces intercepted more than 70 one-way attack drones and at least three ballistic missiles during Iran's attack on Israel, according to two US officials familiar with the situation.

The ballistic missiles were intercepted by warships in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, one of the officials said. Iran launched more than 100 ballistic missiles in total at Israel, according to a senior administration official.

The US Navy currently has two destroyers in that area, both are guided missile destroyers capable of intercepting missile and drone launches.

US fighter jets were also part of the response to Iran’s attack on Saturday and shot down drones launched towards Israel, another US official told CNN.

Biden to meet with G7 leaders Sunday as he condemns Iran's "brazen attack"

From CNN’s Lauren Koenig

US President Joe Biden will meet with G7 leaders Sunday “to coordinate a united diplomatic response to Iran’s brazen attack,” according to a statement released by the White House.

“My team will engage with their counterparts across the region. And we will stay in close touch with Israel’s leaders,” the statement from Biden reads. “And while we have not seen attacks on our forces or facilities today, we will remain vigilant to all threats and will not hesitate to take all necessary action to protect our people.”

US defensive assets moved to the region earlier this week and “helped Israel take down nearly all of the incoming drones and missiles,” according to the statement.

Biden also spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu following Saturday’s attack “to reaffirm America’s ironclad commitment to the security of Israel.”

United Airlines cancels three Middle East flights

From CNN’s Sara Smart

At least three United Airlines flights headed to or departing from the Middle East have been canceled amid the ongoing conflict unfolding between Iran and Israel.

On Saturday a flight from Newark, New Jersey to Tel Aviv, a flight from Washington D.C. to Amman, Jordan, and one from Dubai to Newark were canceled, the airline told CNN in a statement.

There have been no changes to any Sunday flights for United as of Saturday night, according to the airline.

CNN has reached out to other airlines regarding cancellations.

Biden told Netanyahu US will not participate in offensive operations against Iran, US official says

From CNN's MJ Lee

A US Marine guards the entrance to the West Wing of the White House on Saturday.

The US will not participate in any offensive operations against Iran, US President Joe Biden has made clear to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a senior administration official told CNN.

The comments were relayed during the phone call that the two leaders shared in the aftermath of Iran's retaliatory strikes against Israel.

Biden tells Netanyahu tonight was a win, nothing of "value" hit in Israel, US official says

Israel should consider tonight a win because the current US assessment is that Iran’s attacks had been largely unsuccessful and demonstrated Israel’s superior military capability, President Joe Biden told Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in their phone call, a senior administration official told CNN.

The US’s assessment tonight was that almost all of the drones and missiles – including more than 100 ballistic missiles -- launched by Iran had been knocked out of the sky. No cruise missile made impact, the official said, and nothing of “value” was hit.

Bolton: 'Passivity at this point for Israel would be a big mistake'

From CNN's Heather Chen

John Bolton, the former US national security adviser and ambassador to the UN, said “passivity at this point for Israel would be a big mistake,” warning of more attacks.

“This is not time to play academic games and message and signal. This is a question of power,” Bolton told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. "If they came from a different location containing nuclear warheads, Israel might not be so lucky.”

A known Iran policy hawk, Bolton served in senior national security positions during the Trump and Bush administrations. A neoconservative, Bolton has in the past advocated war with Iran and a pre-emptive strike on North Korea.

In 2022, he was the target of an alleged assassination attempt orchestrated by a member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

He has warned against underestimating Iran’s nuclear program, which Tehran has said is for peaceful purposes only.

“I think we have enough experience with faulty intelligence by now, not to be so sure, not to know how much of Iran’s uranium enrichment program is really being conducted under a mountain in North Korea,” Bolton said.

If Tehran sent “a wire transfer to Pyongyang,” it would give the North Koreans “enough time to put a couple of warheads on an airplane and fly them to Tehran. (But) if you take away their nuclear capability, that would be a dramatic hit to the regime, maybe enough to topple it.”
