Detailed Itinerary

Meet your private guide at Tallinn airport, who will transfer you to your hotel. Set off with your guide on an introductory tour of the city. Explore Tallinn's ancient old town. It has new bars, restaurants, spires, steep red roofs, and pastel-hued buildings. Stroll around the streets to look at the vibrant culture and architecture of the place. Following that, enjoy a lavish dinner at a premium restaurant before retiring to your hotel for the night.

Your guide will drive you in a private vehicle out of the city to the port town of Virstu, passing forests and lush farmland. Cross over by ferry to the island of Muhu and explore the wonderful Estonian countryside. Stop at the Muhu village museum in Koguva and learn more about this amazing example of Estonian countryside architecture. Find out more about how the local people used to live here in the past.

The drive to Saaremaa islands cuts through the Baltic Sea, which provides splendid views of the water on both sides. Reach the southernmost point of Saaremaa island. Explore the Sorve lighthouse and climb to the top to enjoy magnificent sea views. Then, visit one of the finest preserved Episcopal Castles in the Baltics in Kuressaare. The castle was developed by knights of the Teutonic order in the 14th century. The city also has the Saaremaa Museum, one of Estonia's biggest and oldest museums. Explore the Lossipark and take a stroll down the main street.

The ride will end in Kuressaare, the largest town of Saaremaa, boasting one of the finest preserved ancient Episcopal Castles in the Baltics, constructed by the knights of the Teutonic order in the 14th century. It also houses the Saaremaa Museum, one of Estonia's biggest and oldest museums. You have enough time to explore the Lossipark, take a walk down the main street, and have dinner in one of the local restaurants before you drive back to the farm and stay for the night.

En route, stop at the Kaali craters. There are many legends about the site and evidence of it being used for ritual sacrifice. It is estimated that the craters are 40006000 years old, and the impact with which the meteor hit the ground, creating the craters, is equivalent to the Hiroshima bomb.

Your guide will drive you back to the mainland in a private vehicle. Then, explore Virtsu harbor before traveling through a natural reserve to the small coastal village of Varble. Continue your drive through the charming green Estonian countryside to Tostamaa. Afterward, reach Parnu, the summer capital of Estonia. Stroll around and soak in the booming art scene, lively nightlife, and lovely beaches.

Follow the road which leads to the coast of the Baltic sea and go way down to Latvia to the first village across the border called Ainazi. Explore this quaint little place and learn more about the history and customs of the locals. Then, take a walk on the beach in the evening. Following that, head out to a delicious dinner at a posh eatery to get a taste of Latvian cuisine.

Drive along the busy coastline of the Gulf of Riga to Saulkrasti, crossing into Latvia en route. Visit the iconic Saulkrasti Bicycle Museum and learn many details about bicycles. Then, reach one of the gorgeous destinations in Latvia known as Sigulda. Wonder at the spectacular scenery of the Gauja River and the forested valleys. Continue the journey to Riga, which is the cosmopolitan capital of Latvia. Walk to the city center and explore the Cat House, the Swedish Gate, St Peter's Basilica, the House of the Blackheads, and the Central Market.

Today, your guide will drive you in a private vehicle to the resort town of Jurmala. Immerse your senses in this famous holiday destination with a 33-kilometer stretch of a spectacular white sand beach. Enjoy your entire day relaxing and rejuvenating here. Following that, return to Riga and enjoy walking around the city and soaking in all the attractions that it has to offer.

Pass through the beautiful Lithuanian countryside and stop at the popular Hill of Crosses. Be mystified by this charming pilgrimage site with unknown origins. Then, continue to the west coast of Lithuania to reach the gorgeous beachside resort town of Palanga. Amble down to the former Prussian city of Klaipeda. Explore the beautiful Curonian Spit, a narrow and long sand dune peninsula that divides the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea.

Head out to explore the unique Curonian Spit National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Be fascinated by the forested areas, beaches, and sand dunes. Then, explore the beautiful village of Nida and the surrounding beaches. Gaze in the distance to see the Russian border. Try the smoked pike for lunch, for which the Spit is famous.

Explore the small make side hamlet of Kloniniai Mijaugonys. Interact with the locals and enjoy their tales about their life in this hamlet. Then, cross the lakes and picturesque countryside to reach Trakai, the former capital of Lithuania. Visit the 14th-century Trakai castle on a tiny island in the middle of Lake Galve.

Discover the self-proclaimed artistic 'republic' of Uzupis. This inner-city quarter declared itself independent from Lithuania a quarter of a century ago. Following that, take a leisurely stroll and soak in the attractions of the old town, which contains unique architecture and cobbled streets. Then, enjoy a scrumptious dinner at a luxurious eatery before retiring for the night to your resort.

Today, your private guide will transfer you to the airport for your international departure.

Travel Tips for Baltic Sea Cruises

I’m on my way to the Baltics for some fun family time. Can’t wait to pay a visit to some tourist sites, enjoy Estonian summer and eat as many wild berries as I can.

I thought that while I’m enjoying all those incredibly relaxing activities, you would love to learn more about the Baltic Sea and the region.

Hitching a ride on a Baltic Sea cruise is one of the best ways to experience many aspects of the region. In some ways, Baltic cruises are much like other cruises, but there are a few things you’ll need to know before setting sail. With that in mind, here are some important tips for Baltic Sea cruising that all rookies should know.

Where You’ll Go

The route your cruise travels will depend largely on the cruise line you select, and the length of your trip. Typically the cruise industry separates routes to focus on certain clusters of the area. Some countries you’ll likely see up close and personal are Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, and Denmark.

Each cruise line has its own preferred ports, so it’s important to check with your agent or company to be certain about the stops. Viking Oceans offers Baltic cruises that will hit all of these areas and more, but be aware that they don’t set sail until 2015.

Some people enjoy not knowing exactly what’s happening next, and lose track of time as the cruise progresses. You’ll want to be acutely aware of the cruise starting and ending points, though, so you can arrange for transportation to and from the ship.

What to Pack

What you’ll need to pack will depend on the time of year you plan to travel. The temperature in this area is largely dependent on the rate at that the snow and ice accumulation melts in the spring. Winter temperatures are typically rather chilly, so you’ll want to plan to wear layers. Dressing in layers will be highly beneficial, as the air temperature over the sea will be markedly cooler than on land.

As soon as the ice melts, the temperatures will begin to rise fairly quickly. By July, it should be in the low 60s on the water, and in the low to mid-70s near land. Even the hottest months won’t be terribly hot. The temperature over the water in August will hover around 60 degrees and will climb to the mid-80s over land. With such a drastic change in temperature over the water versus land, you’ll be happy you packed enough clothes to dress in layers.

Be sure to pack plenty of sunscreen, and sunglasses as the sun is particularly damaging, even during the cooler months. Comfortable and sturdy shoes will be helpful for shore excursions as well.

Documents & Money

The Baltic Sea region comprises 11 nations, but remember that not all nations use the same travel laws and currency. While Estonia, Finland, Germany, and Latvia share Euro as a currency, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Russia, and Poland use their own. Keep this in mind for shore excursions and souvenir shopping.

When planning sightseeing, remember that blanket visas usually cover only shore excursions and exclude any trips you may decide to do on your own. Be prepared and determine all travel document requirements before you take a cruise.

How to Avoid Seasickness

Not many things will ruin a cruise the way seasickness can. The uneasy feeling associated with seasickness is caused by our body’s natural inclination for balance fighting against being on an object in motion, such as a car or boat. In some cases, people can sort of thinking their way out of it, by convincing themselves that they’re not on a moving ship. However, if you’re one that is especially prone to motion sickness, you may want to plan to bring preventive tools.

Some say applying a Sea-Band to your wrist helps curb seasickness. It works by applying pressure to your Nei-Kuan pressure point and is safe for pregnant women and children. You can get them at most major drug stores.

There is typically a physician on board, but you might be better off seeing your personal physician before departing on your cruise if you are susceptible to motion sickness.

Your Baltic cruise will likely turn out to be one of the most memorable experiences of your life. Whether you’re going on your honeymoon, as a celebration, or simply a reason to get away and explore the world a bit, the places you’ll go and the people you’ll meet will stay with you for years to come. Do your research and plan ahead to make sure you’re prepared for everything your trip will entail so you won’t have to stress about little details while you sail along this beautiful sea.

This Epic New Hiking Trail Connects National Forests in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania

You’ll soon be able to hike between Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, thanks to this new 1,300-mile trail.

Here's one to file away for the bucket list: a new 1,300-mile hiking trail that cuts through several national forests, connecting the Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

Officials in the region are planning to spend this year creating trail markers to guide travelers along the route, which links the Polish-Lithuanian border and Tallinn, Estonia. The trail is divided into stages, each just over 12 miles in length.

Officials estimate it will take between 102 and 114 days to hike the full length of the trail, which is part of a longer European path that aims to join the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, and the Baltic states. For travelers looking to make a less ambitious commitment, the Baltic Forest Trail is broken into 50 different one-day hike options.

Organizers are also working to map out accommodations and attractions along the path, which meanders through one of Europe's greenest countries — Latvia, half of which is covered in forests.

Notably, the trail cuts through Gauja National Park, home to more than 500 monuments and historical markers, including stone castles, churches, and windmills. It's also Latvia's largest and oldest national park, best known for its rocky cliffs, gorgeous river-view trails, and medieval castles.

Meena Thiruvengadam is a Travel + Leisure contributor who has visited 50 countries on six continents and 47 U.S. states. She loves historic plaques, wandering new streets and walking on beaches. Find her on Twitter and Instagram .
