How to apply for a Schengen visa from Qatar

How to apply for a Schengen visa from Qatar

If you are a citizen or resident of Qatar who is hoping to visit Europe sometime in the future, you will likely need to obtain a Schengen visa in order to enter and travel throughout majority of states on the continent. A Schengen visa for Qatari citizens and residents will give you access to the entire Schengen area, a group of 26-countries that includes some of the most popular tourist and business destinations in the world. With a Schengen visa from Qatar, you will be allowed to visit France, Germany, and Italy, among other exiting destinations renowned for their history, culture, and cuisine. Read on to discover how to apply for a Schengen visa from Qatar and for the answers to commonly asked questions like, “Where do you apply for Schengen visa?” and, “How much does a Schengen visa cost from Qatar?” Finally, today’s blog will discuss the Schengen visa requirements for Qatar citizens and residents, and Schengen visas and types for Qatar passport holders.

  • The Schengen visa application process is sometimes lengthy—especially for first time applicants.
  • When you apply for a Schengen visa from Qatar for an upcoming trip to Europe, you will want to have a general idea of your travel dates to give you enough time to prepare your application.
  • In general, the processing time for applications for the Schengen visa for Qataris and residents is three weeks, so you will want to submit your visa application at least three weeks before you intend to travel (and no earlier than 6 months before).
  • When you apply for your Schengen visa from Qatar, you will select the “type” of Schengen visa you need on your application form.
  • There are a number of different Schengen visas and types for Qatar passport holders, each of which reflects a reason for travel.
  • Schengen visa types include medical, tourism, and business; for a complete list, click here .
  • Schengen visas are available in the single, double, and multiple-entry categories; the type you select will determine the number of times you can enter and re-enter the zone.
  • If you receive a single-entry Schengen visa from Qatar, you will only be allowed to the enter Schengen area one time during your visa validity period—if you exit the area after entering you will not be allowed to return—even if you still have time left on your visa.
  • Alternatively, if you have a double entry-visa you will be allowed enter the zone, exit it, and re-enter it again. A double entry visa is a good option for those who plan on returning to Qatar at some point during the 90 days in which their Schengen visa is valid, but doesn’t plan on traveling back and forth in-and out of the Schengen area frequently.
  • Finally, the multiple-entry category allows visa holders to enter, exit, and re-enter the zone as many times as they like throughout their visa validity period. Because this option is the most flexible, it is the best option for men and women who want the freedom of being able to travel back and forth from the Schengen area to Qatar (or elsewhere outside of the zone).
  • Where do you apply for a Schengen Visa? Qatari visa applicants will apply for their visa through the Schengen country they intend to spend the most time in on their trip.
  • If you are spending an equal amount of time in multiple places, you will apply for your visa through the country that represents your first point of entry into the Schengen area.
  • For example, if you are travelling to both Spain and France, but you plan on spending more time in Spain than in France, you will apply for a Spanish Schengen visa. Alternatively, if you are spending an equal amount of time in both places, but your first entry into the Schengen area involves flying directly from Doha to Madrid, you will apply for a Spanish Schengen visa, as Spain would, in this scenario, represent your first entry point to the Schengen area.
  • Now that you know what Schengen country you are applying to, you should apply for a Schengen visa through that country’s embassy, consulate, or visa application center (whichever entity processes Schengen visas for that country).
  • Most major European countries have a consular presence in Doha. However, if you are applying for a Schengen visa from a smaller Schengen country (such as Latvia or Denmark) you may find the consular affairs of those countries represented by a larger European country.
  • For example, Hungary handles the processing of Schengen visas to both Latvia and Denmark for applicants in Qatar. This means that if you are applying for a Schengen visa to Latvia, you will apply through the Hungarian Embassy in Doha (via a visa-application center affiliated with Hungary).
  • Qatari passport (or another valid passport)
  • Schengen visa application
  • Schengen visa fee
  • Passport size photos (2)
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Proof that you can financially afford your trip
  • Proof of having purchased travel medical insurance
  • Biometric information
  • In addition to the above, Qatari applicants must also submit a number of supplemental documents that are dependent on the specific type of visa they are applying for.
  • For example, if you are applying for a Medical Schengen visa from Qatar, you will have to submit documents from the hospital you are having your procedure in.
  • For more information on required Schengen visa materials, click here .
  • Please note that any documents you submit will likely have to be written in either English, the language of the country you are applying to, or another commonly-accepted European language. Alternatively, you can submit documents in third-languages, provided they are submitted alongside an official translation into an accepted language. For example, if you submit a visa invitation letter from a friend that is written in Arabic, you may have to have that letter translated in order for it to be accepted as a valid supplemental document.
  • Contact the Schengen country you are applying through to find out what language they will accept document submissions in.
  • Schengen visa applicants must fill out the basic application form.
  • The universal Schengen visa form, which most Schengen countries will allow you to apply through, is available here .
  • If you choose to apply through this above method, you will print out and fill out this form and submit it with the rest of your required and supplemental materials at your Schengen visa appointment.
  • Alternatively, depending on what country you are applying to, you may be asked to apply through a country-specific visa portal. This is the case for applicants applying for Schengen visas from Germany and France (see France’s online visa portal as an example).
  • Those who are applying for a short-stay Schengen visa from Qatar through a visa portal can generally create an online account and fill out their application online (often, they are asked to bring a physical print out of this application—even if they submitted it online).
  • Schengen visa applicants who apply online often have the advantage of paying for their visa online and also scheduling a Schengen visa appointment.
  • The majority of people applying for a short-stay Schengen visa from Qatar will need to attend a Schengen visa appointment in order to submit their application, and the majority of these people will have to schedule their appointment in advance (verses simply showing up at the embassy/consulate to drop it off during normal operating hours).
  • If you didn’t apply online (or didn’t receive a prompt to schedule an appointment) you should contact your application destination directly to find out whether you need to schedule a formal appointment to submit your application.
  • Biometric information submission (this is the collection of your fingerprints and photos, which you are required to submit if you are a first-time applicant or if you previously submitted your info over 59 months ago).
  • Schengen visa fee payment (How much does a Schengen visa cost from Qatar? The quick answer is €80 EUR for most applicants. For a more detailed exploration of Schengen visa fees, click here .
  • Schengen visa interview (most applicants will be asked to attend a short interview upon the submission of their application).
  • Almost all countries require that Schengen visa applicants attend their Schengen visa appointment in person (i.e. personally submit their application).
  • If you frequently apply for Schengen visas and your biometric information remains valid from a previous application (and if you have already paid for your visa online) you may be able to avoid applying in person and interviewing . However, even if you have previously and frequently applied for a Schengen visa, you may still be asked to come in for an interview.
  • If you are approved for your Schengen visa from Qatar, you will receive a message to pick up your passport (which will contain your Schengen visa) allowing you to proceed with your trip.
  • If your Schengen visa is rejected, you have options, including the ability to appeal. For more general information on how to appeal a rejection, click here .

Overview of Schengen Visit Visa

The Schengen is an area comprised of 27 European countries that have abolished passports and all other kinds of border control at their interactive borders. The region primarily functions as a single jurisdiction, with a unified visa policy for the purpose of international travel. A Schengen visit visa from Qatar entitles the holder to enter any Schengen Area member state for tourism, frequent travelers, short-stay traveller, or business visa travelers for a maximum of 3 months within a period of 6 months.

Although Spain is not part of the Schengen Area, it has a special agreement with the Schengen countries that allows Spanish nationals to enter and exit the Schengen Area using their Spanish passport. As such, Spanish nationals do not necessarily have to apply via Spanish authorities for a separate Schengen visa in order to travel to Schengen countries.

However, if you want to acquire a Spain tourist visa from Qatar, you must apply for a Schengen tourist visa from your home country. The approach of applying for a Schengen visa can be lengthy and complicated, so it is important to start the application process as early as possible with the help of experienced consultants. Contact DM Consultants in Qatar to get started with your Schengen visit visa process. We guide you throughout the visa procedure from application to visiting visa centre, visa submission, and visa facilitation.

The 13 Best Ways to Fly Business Class to Europe on Points

Amongst North American Miles & Points enthusiasts, flying in business class to Europe remains one of the most popular travel objectives. After all, Europe is always a great destination to visit year-round, since it offers so much diversity in a relatively small geographical area.

In this article, we’ll outline the best airlines for redeeming points for a luxurious flight across the Atlantic. For each airline, we’ll look at ideal points currency to use, which routes to search for, and the general availability patterns.

What ranks a transatlantic airline among the “best”? Well, all of the airlines listed alphabetically here allow you to fly from North America across the Atlantic in a lie-flat seat, in such a way that provides a good value for miles that you can easily collect.

In This Post

1. air canada, 2. british airways, 3. air france klm, 4. austrian airlines, 6. lot polish airlines, 7. lufthansa, 8. qatar airways, 9. singapore airlines, 11. tap air portugal, 12. turkish airlines.

Air Canada offers the most options for flights from Canada to Europe, with direct flights from hubs in Montreal , Toronto , and Vancouver .

If you’re travelling from the United States, it’ll be an easy connection to one of the Canadian hubs before heading onwards.

Most of the long-haul routes offer lie-flat pods in Air Canada Signature Class , meaning that you’ll be entirely comfortable for the ride across the Atlantic.

The easiest way to earn and redeem points for flights with Air Canada is with Aeroplan points.

Aeroplan points may be earned by transferring on a 1:1 ratio from American Express Membership Rewards , or through one of many co-branded credit cards , such as the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card .

In the United States, Aeroplan is a transfer partner of American Express US Membership Rewards , Bilt Rewards, Capital One Miles , and Chase Ultimate Rewards . Furthermore, there’s the Chase Aeroplan Card , which comes with many unique features.

Flights to Europe are priced in four distance-based bands on Aeroplan’s “Between North America and Atlantic zones” chart.

When redeeming for Air Canada business class flights with Aeroplan, you’ll need to consider both the actual distance flown and the dynamic pricing structure.

Many flights to Europe from Toronto or Montreal fall within the first distance band of 0–4,000 miles. Dublin, London, Paris, Madrid, and Lisbon all clock in at fewer than 4,000 miles, too.

With dynamic pricing, you may be able to book any of these routes for as few as 60,000 Aeroplan points  in Air Canada business class; however, you may also see the cost rise to the other end of the spectrum at 160,000 Aeroplan points or more.

For travellers based in Western Canada, flights to Europe fall within the second distance band, meaning that the price starts at 70,000 Aeroplan points in business class. Again, the cost may rise to well above that price, depending on demand.

As we’ve covered in detail, one way for anyone with Aeroplan Elite Status to reduce the cost of flying in business class with Air Canada is to book an Economy (Latitude)  and then use eUpgrades to instantly confirm a seat in business class, based on availability.

travel to europe from qatar

Fortunately, Aeroplan redemptions aren’t subject to carrier-imposed surcharges, so you won’t have to break the bank to fly with Air Canada. Depending on your airport of origin, you can expect to pay around $100 in taxes and fees .

If the price of the flight you’d like falls on the more expensive end of the dynamic spectrum, it may be worthwhile to consider other options that will both save you points while still affording you a comfortable flight.

Your best chance of finding Air Canada business class flights at the lower end of the dynamic spectrum is by booking far in advance or close to the date of departure.

travel to europe from qatar

British Airways is another reliable option when it comes to redeeming points for transatlantic business class flights.

While there are definitely pros and cons to redeeming Avios on British Airways flights, the program has made some tweaks that make it more attractive than it has been in the past.

On the earning front, Avios can be transferred at a 1:1 ratio from both American Express Membership Rewards and RBC Avion . You can also earn Avios directly through co-branded credit cards, such as the RBC® British Airways Visa Infinite† .

The same is true in the United States, with Avios being a transfer partner of American Express US Membership Rewards , Capital One , and Chase Ultimate Rewards .

There are also relatively frequent transfer bonuses to British Airways Executive Club, which further reduces the cost of redemptions.

Currently, British Airways flies to Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver in Canada, as well as to a number of destinations across the United States.

When it comes time to redeem Avios for a flight with British Airways, you’ll likely have a number of options available to choose from. British Airways guarantees that it releases at least four business class award seats on every single flight, which makes it both a predictable and reliable choice for when you’re planning a trip.

This can be especially useful for families, for whom finding multiple business class award seats can be tricky.

Aside from being relatively easy to earn and having ample availability, the downside is that British Airways levies carrier-imposed surcharges on award bookings. It’s not uncommon to see taxes and fees totalling close to $1,000 (CAD)  on a booking made through Avios or another partner, such as Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan .

However, British Airways Executive Club also features Reward Flight Saver pricing , which lets you pay more in Avios and less in cash for long-haul flights with the carrier.

travel to europe from qatar

For example, an off-peak business class flight from Toronto to London costs 80,000 Avios and $350 (CAD) in taxes and fees as a Reward Flight Saver. Note the other pricing options that are also available, which let you pay less in points and more in cash, should you be so inclined.

Similarly, an off-peak flight from Vancouver to London prices out at 90,000 Avios plus $450 (CAD)  in taxes and fees.

If you’re flying westbound from London to North America, you’ll want to be mindful of the Air Passenger Duty (APD) , which can’t be avoided for direct flights departing from the UK. Rather, you may want to consider connecting through a different European hub to save some money along the way.

It’s worth mentioning that flights with Aer Lingus used to be a sweet spot within the Avios program, but are now subject to carrier-imposed surcharges. You can expect to pay around $600 (CAD) in taxes and fees for an eastbound booking.

Westbound, the taxes and fees are a bit more palatable, at around $190–400 (CAD) for flights departing from Dublin. If you’re able to, consider flying to Europe with British Airways and from Europe with Aer Lingus to minimize costs as much as possible.

The award availability with Aer Lingus isn’t as generous as British Airways, though, which may become a difficult barrier to navigate.

SkyTeam airlines  Air France  and  KLM  operate flights between their hubs in Paris and Amsterdam to a host of North American destinations.

Air France flies to Vancouver , Toronto , Montreal , Ottawa, and Quebec City , while KLM flies to Vancouver, Edmonton , Calgary , Toronto, and Montreal. Both airlines have extensive networks in Europe, offering easy single-stop connections for travellers from these cities.

The airlines also fly to a host of destinations across the United States.

Redeeming miles for flights on Air France and KLM is best achieved with Air France KLM Flying Blue miles .

The easiest way for Canadians to earn these is by transferring American Express Membership Rewards at a 1:0.75 ratio, and directly through the Air France KLM World Elite Mastercard .

You can also transfer from Marriot Bonvoy in optimal increments of 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points to 25,000 Flying Blue miles.

travel to europe from qatar

In the United States, Flying Blue is a 1:1 transfer partner from American Express US Membership Rewards , Capital One Miles , Chase Ultimate Rewards , and Citi ThankYou Rewards .

You can expect to pay as little as 50,000 miles for a one-way flight from Canada or the United States to Europe in business class with either airline. Factoring in the 1:0.75 transfer ratio, this would result in a cost of at least 66,667 MR points.

Keep in mind that Flying Blue redemptions are also priced dynamically. So while you can expect to pay as few as 50,000 miles, you’d have to pay more if the lower fares are no longer available.

As opposed to most other airlines on this list, you will incur fuel surcharges on redemptions with Air France or KLM. While they aren’t as heavy as redeeming with, say, British Airways, you can expect to pay around $300–$350 (CAD) for a business class flight.

Keep an eye out for Flying Blue Promo Rewards , which offer reduced award pricing on specific routes each month. Canadian routes have previously been featured with one-way fares as low as 37,500 miles in business class to Europe, so if flying with either Air France or KLM interests you, be sure keep an eye out for our monthly updates.

Vienna-based  Austrian Airlines flies to Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Montreal, New York (JFK), Newark, and Washington Dulles.

The best ways to book flights with Austrian Airlines is with Aeroplan or Avianca LifeMiles .

With Aeroplan, since all of these flights are over 4,000 miles, adding a connecting flight to or from most locations in Eastern North America will still total less than 6,001 miles, keeping you within the second distance band of Aeroplan’s “Between North America and Atlantic zones” chart.

As Aeroplan redemptions with partner airlines come at a fixed price, you can expect to pay  70,000 points  for a one-way flight in business class from one of Austrian Airlines’s North American hubs to Vienna, with a modest amount of taxes and fees .

If you’d like to continue to another destination in Europe, the fixed-price of 70,000 Aeroplan points remains the same, as long as the total distance flown doesn’t cross into the next distance band.

With LifeMiles, you can expect to pay 63,000 miles for a one-way flight, plus around $50 (USD) in taxes and fees.

While the business class hard and soft products may not be the best on the market, you will still have a lie-flat seat and Do & Co catering. The airline also tends to release ample award space, meaning that it should be relatively easy to find availability, including multiple seats.

One way that Star Alliance partner airlines can be particularly useful on Aeroplan redemptions is to get to popular destinations with direct flights that are subject to dynamic pricing with Air Canada.

For example, Air Canada operates a direct flight to Rome from Toronto and Montreal. Because Italy is a popular destination, finding a seat at the lower end of the dynamic pricing for Air Canada may be quite difficult, even when booking far in advance.

So, while it’s always optimal to be on a direct flight, making a single connection via Vienna would save you a significant number of points.

Austrian Airlines business class – Cabin

Another Oneworld carrier on this list is Madrid-based Iberia.  The Spanish carrier doesn’t have as wide of a network as other airlines, but there are some compelling sweet spots to be aware of for flights across the Atlantic.

Earning Iberia Plus Avios may appear to be daunting at first, especially in Canada, since there aren’t any direct transfer partners to the program.

In the United States, Iberia Plus Avios is a transfer partner of American Express US Membership Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards at a 1:1 ratio.

Aside from getting a US-issued co-branded credit card, there’s always the option of transferring Marriott Bonvoy points at the ideal ratio of 60,000 points = 25,000 miles.

However, keep in mind that you can move British Airways Avios and Iberia Avios freely between your accounts . This means that as long as you can earn British Airways Avios, you can also earn Iberia Avios.

travel to europe from qatar

Once you have Avios in your Iberia account, you’ll want to keep an eye out for a direct flight from any of its US destinations, which include Boston, New York (JFK), Washington Dulles, Chicago, Dallas Fort Worth, Miami, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

Iberia uses peak and off-peak pricing, with very reasonable prices for direct flights to Europe.

From Boston, Chicago, New York (JFK), and Washington Dulles, you’ll pay just 34,000 Avios for a one-way flight in business class on off-peak dates, or 50,000 Avios for the same flight during peak dates.

From any of the other cities, you’ll pay 42,500 Avios for off-peak dates in business class, and 62,500 Avios on peak dates.

Better yet, you won’t encounter significant taxes and fees on these flights. Expect to pay around €110–150 ($160–215 CAD) per person per direction, which isn’t unreasonable whatsoever.

While Iberia might not have the flashiest product out there, it’s still good to have as a backup option if nothing else is available.

Poland’s national airline, LOT, has added several North American routes in recent years, and is quite a popular choice for Canadians redeeming their points to Eastern Europe with Aeroplan.

You’ll pay 70,000 Aeroplan points for a flight from most of LOT’s North American destinations to Warsaw.

The flagship Canadian route is Toronto–Warsaw, which is served by the airline’s relatively new Boeing 787 Dreamliner. In addition to Warsaw, LOT also maintains hubs in other Polish cities, such as Kraków and Rzeszów.

LOT’s additional North American routes are as follows:

Chicago–Warsaw, Chicago–Kraków

New York JFK–Warsaw, Newark–Warsaw, Newark–Kraków, Newark–Rzeszów (seasonally)

Los Angeles–Warsaw

Miami–Warsaw

Within Europe, LOT has excellent coverage of the Baltic region and Eastern Europe, so they’d be a first-choice carrier for planning a trip there. If you’re travelling to Western Europe, on the other hand, you may find it a bit of a detour to go through Poland on the way, and doing so may bump you up to the next distance band on Aeroplan.

Business class space on LOT Polish Airlines is relatively easy to find if you’re searching far enough in advance. In particular, LOT is one of the easiest European awards to find departing straight out of Toronto.

The seats on LOT’s 787 Dreamliner aren’t the most advanced, but they’re perfectly fine for couples travelling together. You’ll likely be pleasantly surprised by the food and service, the latter of which can be very polished .

The German carrier Lufthansa has an extensive worldwide network. It operates direct flights to Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver from both Frankfurt and Munich, as well as numerous destinations in the United States.

Business class award space can be hit or miss with Lufthansa, and your best bet is to book far in advance or closer to the date of departure.

Unlike many airlines, who have moved to pod-style seating in business class cabins, Lufthansa has been slow to follow. Therefore, you can expect to be seated next to a friendly neighbour on most routes, as the seats are arranged in 2-2 formations.

When it comes to booking, your best bet is once again through Aeroplan or Avianca LifeMiles.

With Aeroplan, flights from Montreal to Frankfurt or Munich, as well as flights from Toronto to Frankfurt or flights from the US East Coast, are under 4,000 miles, placing them in the first distance band at 60,000 Aeroplan points for a business class seat.

Meanwhile, flying from Toronto to Munich, or from most of Central and Western North America, will cost you 70,000 Aeroplan points in business class.

With LifeMiles, you can expect to pay 63,000 miles per direction.

As one of Europe’s largest carriers, Lufthansa offers many convenient connections to other popular destinations in Western Europe.

Having said that, Lufthansa doesn’t have the greatest reputation for hard or soft products, so you might want to consider flying with most other airlines on this list if at all possible.

exc-5b8dde901ae6cf1d7dffcb17

While Qatar Airways is based in Doha, which most certainly is not in Europe, there’s a very good reason to fly to Europe by way of Doha. That’s because Qatar Airways offers what’s widely considered the world’s best business class with Qatar Airways Qsuites , and it has an excellent network.

Normally, the best options to book award flights with Qatar Airways are with Qatar Airways Privilege Club and American Airlines AAdvantage . However, when it comes to flying to Europe via Doha with Qatar Airways, you’ll want to book via Qatar Airways Privilege Club, as we’ll explain below.

Keep in mind that Qatar Airways Privilege Club also uses Avios as its currency. Therefore, as long as you can access British Airways Executive Club , you can instantly move Avios into your Qatar Airways Privilege Club account from within.

Fortunately, Qatar Airways flies to destinations across Europe and North America, including a single Canadian route to Montreal.

If you can find award availability, flying from a North American city to a European city via Doha will cost 85,000–90,000 Avios, plus a few hundred dollars in taxes and fees. Depending on the route, you may even enjoy Qsuites on both segments.

However, you can ramp this up a notch and fly from North America to Doha in Qsuites, and then from Doha to, say, Istanbul, in Qatar Airways First Class for the same price of 85,000 Avios.

Qatar Airways First Class award availability to Istanbul is great, and the hardest part is going to be finding long-haul award availability to or from Doha.

However, if you keep an eye on availability, and as long as you don’t mind taking the long way to Europe, you’ll be treated to an excellent experience from start to finish.

While Singapore Airlines may only fly two fifth freedom route between North America and Europe, you can try out one of the best business class products in the world while getting across the Atlantic.

Your best bet for booking Singapore Airlines business class flights is with Aeroplan or Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer .

Singapore Airlines flies between New York (JFK) and Frankfurt, as well as between Manchester and Houston. The best part is that these flights only cost 60,000 and 70,000 Aeroplan points in business class, respectively.

If you happen to have some KrisFlyer miles that need to be used, you can also book this route for 56,700 KrisFlyer miles,  as long as it’s available during the monthly Spontaneous Escapes deals.

It’s worth noting that Singapore Airlines used to operate the Airbus A380 on the New York (JFK)–Frankfurt route; however, it’s now using the Boeing 777.

Still, you’ll get to fly with one of the world’s best airlines, which is a treat in and of itself for any flight.

travel to europe from qatar

Flying with Swiss is by far one of the most straightforward ways for Canadians and Americans to fly to Europe, and to sweeten the deal, Swiss releases a healthy amount of business class seats to Aeroplan and Avianca LifeMiles .

Plus, you have the option of flying with Edelweiss Air, a Swiss sister airline, from a number of other destinations.

In Canada, Swiss flies to Toronto and Montreal, and in the US, Swiss also flies from Zurich to Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York (both Newark and JFK), and San Francisco.

In addition, there’s a New York (JFK)–Geneva route, which often has ample award space for multiple passengers.

As is often the case with transatlantic flights, Swiss tends to release more space on the East Coast routes than the West Coast ones. Flights to Boston, Chicago, Montreal, and New York are generally readily available if you search well in advance, whereas the Los Angeles and San Francisco flights can be much tougher to find.

The direct flight from Montreal to Zurich costs  60,000 Aeroplan points in business class. Adding a connection to most destinations in Europe will bump up the cost to  70,000 Aeroplan points.

From any of the Western North American cities, expect to pay 70,000 points in business class, including with its sister company Edelweiss Air from either Calgary or Vancouver to Zurich.

With Avianca LifeMiles, the same flights cost 63,000 miles in either direction.

In addition, Swiss is also a very reliable airline for opening up last-minute award space , putting out a significant number of business class seats within two weeks of departure – even on the tougher-to-find West Coast routes.

The Airbus A330s are used on the Montreal route, although some travellers find the seat to be too cramped. The best seats on these aircraft are the throne seats, which offer an ample amount of space in the cabin.

Switzerland is located smack dab in the middle of Europe, and Zurich Airport is an absolute dream for transiting passengers, with tight connections easily doable. Throw in the very reasonable $100 or so in taxes and fees, and you can’t go wrong flying Swiss across the Atlantic.

Keep an eye out for the updated cabins on routes offering the Boeing 777. The food can be a little below what you might expect, and the service seems to be hit or miss, but the overall “Swiss factor” makes this airline an ever-popular choice.

exc-5962b62cd2b85754d9653e60

The Portuguese flag carrier TAP-danced its way into this list with ample award space and a solid network to popular destinations in Europe. In Canada, TAP operates direct flights to Toronto and Montreal.

TAP has undergone significant expansion in recent years, with Boston, Chicago, Miami, New York (Newark and JFK), San Francisco, and Washington Dulles counting among their US destinations. Newark also has a direct flight to Porto as well.

TAP Air Portugal is amongst the easiest airlines for locating business class award space. If you’re searching a few months in advance, finding space out of your desired gateway city shouldn’t pose much a problem at all.

Once again, we look to Aeroplan and Avianca LifeMiles as the programs of choice for booking.

Direct flights from Toronto or Montreal to Lisbon cost  60,000 Aeroplan points and around $100 in taxes and fees.

Once again, a flight booked with Avianca LifeMiles prices out at 63,000 miles.

The exception, again, is the San Francisco flight. While TAP does make a few seats available on this route, it’s still much more limited compared to the Eastern cities.

As a general rule of thumb, travellers based in Western Canada would have a much easier time connecting through Toronto or the US East Coast rather than San Francisco.

Geographically speaking, it’s not much of a detour to route through Portugal on the way to virtually anywhere in Europe, and Lisbon and Porto make for excellent 24-hour layovers as well. However, with Portugal being on the westernmost extremity of continental Europe, the downside here is that the flight times from North America are not very long, so it may be tough to get proper rest onboard.

Further, although both Toronto and Montreal are fewer than 4,000 miles from Lisbon, most European destinations beyond Spain will result in bumping up to the next distance band with Aeroplan. This would add another 10,000 points to the cost, which could still be a worthwhile option to consider, especially if you can book a stopover.

exc-5ca559bbee6eb050ba52fa09

Turkish Airlines flies to more countries than any other airline in the world, and naturally that includes a good handful of routes that benefit North American travellers. Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver are served in Canada, in addition to eleven cities in the US.

There doesn’t appear to be much consistency with how Turkish Airlines releases award space. They seem to add and remove business class availability at will, and it’s not uncommon to see entire months’ worth of space appear, then disappear, and then reappear a bit later on.

If you see available seats that you like, book them as soon as possible, because they might be gone the very next day.

The downside to flying with Turkish is that it’s a pretty significant detour if you’re travelling anywhere in Western Europe. While all three Canadian cities are less than 6,000 miles from Istanbul, placing them in the second distance band at 70,000 Aeroplan points, adding connections to Western Europe would bump up the cost to 90,000 Aeroplan points.

If you’ve managed to snag a seat on the flight from Vancouver to Istanbul , then adding any connections will bump you up to the third distance band, as the distance of the route itself clocks in at 5,973 miles.

When searching for flights, be mindful that Turkish Airlines operates up to four aircraft to Canada: the Boeing 777 , the Airbus A330 ,the Boeing 787 Dreamliner , and the Airbus A350.

If at all possible, you’ll want to fly on the Dreamliner or the A350, as they have an updated hard product to accompany Turkish Airlines’s excellent soft product.

Service on Turkish can be hit or miss, but the food and drink is where the airline earns its glowing reputation. And if you have some time to spend in Istanbul’s airport, be sure to check out the Turkish Airlines Business Lounge there.

Rounding out this list is United,  which offers its flagship Polaris business class on many routes between North America and Europe.

United maintains hubs in Chicago, Denver, Houston, Newark, San Francisco, and Washington Dulles. From these airports, and also from other major US cities, the airline operates a number of direct flights to Europe.

As a Star Alliance member, United can be booked with many different loyalty programs. The easiest programs to access through credit cards are Aeroplan and United MileagePlus .

On both sides of the border, Aeroplan points are very easy to come by, as the loyalty program is accessible through co-branded credit cards, transferrable points, crediting paid flights, and many other avenues.

On the other hand, United’s own loyalty program is less accessible. You can either earn points directly with a co-branded Chase credit card, or by transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards to MileagePlus at a 1:1 ratio.

With most other airlines, you can transfer Marriott Bonvoy points to airline miles at the optimal ratio of 60,000 points = 25,000 miles. However, with United, you can benefit from a 10% bonus, resulting in a ratio of 3 Bonvoy points = 1.1 MileagePlus miles or 60,000 points = 27,000 miles.

Generally speaking, you can find good Aeroplan award availability for United business class flights to Europe from its major East Coast hubs, including Chicago, Newark, and Washington Dulles. If you’re able to take a positioning flight to one of these airports, you should have a good chance at scoring a seat.

Plus, United is very reliable for last-minute award availability throughout its network.

Keep in mind that at United hubs airports, you’ll enjoy an excellent ground experience in the airline’s flagship United Polaris lounges . Prior to your flight, you can sip on delicious cocktails, dine à la carte, and freshen up with a shower before heading to board your flight.

Flights from Chicago to destinations in Ireland and the United Kingdom fall under the first distance band with Aeroplan, as they all measure less than 4,000 miles. A business class flight prices out at 60,000 Aeroplan points, plus a modest amount of taxes and fees.

From Newark, you’ll have a bit more latitude to work with while staying under Aeroplan’s first distance band. A direct flight from Newark to many destinations in Western Europe, such as Zurich, Barcelona, Frankfurt, Paris, Amsterdam, London, Edinburgh, and Dublin, all cost 60,000 points in business class.

Otherwise, most destinations served by United will cost 70,000 points in business class, especially if you add a connection on either end of your trip.

It’s not unusual to find upwards of nine seats on a United route, which can be a great option for families or groups. You’ll want to keep an eye on some of the less popular routes, perhaps from Brussels to Washington Dulles, and you’re more likely to spot these on off-peak dates rather than during the summer months.

In terms of the onboard experience, United isn’t necessarily known for having the most cutting-edge hard or soft products, but it’s still an entirely comfortable way to fly. You’ll enjoy a lie-flat seat on United’s different aircraft, as well as decent catering, including ice cream.

When you’re planning a trip to Europe, be sure to look at United for a combination of an excellent ground experience and a restful way to get across the Atlantic.

You left out Alaska Airlines. Their miles can be redeemed on Condor to FRA and then points beyond for as little as 55,000 miles in J-class.

I think Ricky forgot to change the calculation for Flying Blue Rewards. 73,333 MR to Flying Blue was the old ratio for 55k points. 50k FB only requires 66,667 now.

travel to europe from qatar

It has now been fixed. Thanks for letting us know

I’m looking into September and there is nothing approaching 70K for premium let alone BC. I tried the 2 examples listed, NYC to Frankfurt on Singapore, there are no available seats in either premium or BC (direct flights). Booking on A/C site, flights to Rome, Frankfurt are over 240K for BC and most premium are over 90K.

travel to europe from qatar

Try JFK–FRA on September 19 or 22.

Thanks for the reply. I stand corrected, that flight is a good one – direct and only requiring 60K for BC (J). Unfortunately, those dates don’t work for me. The other days are really high. I’m in your FB group and some members gave me some suggestions to try. Let’s hope I find something.

i am 64 and live in winnipeg, the worst major city to fly out of in canada. booked my first ever business class flight to europe in JANUARY!! to fly oct 1. i searched everywhere air canada flies trying to find the cheapest direct 100% business class flight. 70K+$110 x 2 with my wife. i think i did pretty good. its to warsaw with LOT. from there its a cheap flight to my destination which is zurich. everywhere else was 110-280K

Wow .. 4 years of planning Aeroplan trips and I never realized Edelweiss Air was bookable. I assumed it was completely unaffiliated with SWISS

This is complete BS, never encountered Business flight for 60K on Air Canada, for example YYZ to LHR is minimum 290K per leg.

If you book far in advance, there are definitely multiple seats available for 60,000 points on the YYZ–LHR route.

8 Airlines That Give Students and Young Adults Discounts and Exclusive Benefits

Did you know airlines offer student and young adult discounts? Here's what you need to know to save money on your next flight.

When flight prices are high, it’s essential to find any way to cut costs. This is especially true for students, who might be on a limited budget or be less flexible for times and dates they can fly. Luckily, some airlines offer student or youth discounts. Although these discounts generally aren’t substantial, every little bit helps to make travel more accessible. Requirements and eligibility will vary by airline, but you can expect the promotion to be valid on economy tickets and select routes.

“We know travel is a priority for many young adults, so this summer season, which we anticipate will be United’s busiest ever with 5 percent more customers flying the airline this June, July, and August, we’re thrilled to offer United MileagePlus members ages 18 to 23 an exclusive discount on United Economy and Basic Economy seats – making it even easier for them to take flight on their next adventure,” says a spokesperson for United.

Here are some domestic and international airlines that offer discounts for students or young adult travelers. Depending on the airline, these benefits range from 10 percent off your fare to an additional checked bag.

Related: How to Book a Flight to Get the Best Deals

United Airlines

MileagePlus members ages 18 to 23 can receive a 5 percent discount on economy and basic economy seats for bookings made through September 30, 2024. To redeem, log in to the United app, go to the “book flight” section, and select the young traveler discount. Flights will automatically have the promotion applied. Remember that basic economy seats might not include a checked bag, so you will need to travel light to make the promotion worth it. This is the only U.S.-based airline that offers student discounts at the time of writing.

Iberia Joven is a program for both students and young people. If you are under 30, you get a 10 percent discount on flights; if you book for a group of four or more, you get a 15 percent discount. If you are traveling to study abroad, you can take an extra bag and make a free change on your return flight, regardless of your age.

Singapore Airlines

If you are enrolled at an eligible college or university, you can get 10 percent off when you book a Lite, Value, or Standard fare as part of Singapore Airlines student privileges . You will also receive an increased baggage allowance and a fee waiver on your first booking change. Singapore Airlines is unique in offering student discounts on economy, premium economy, and business class fares. All you need to do is verify your student status and start looking for deals.

Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways has one of the best student programs on this list. Once you enroll in the Student Club program, you will receive a coupon for 10 percent off your booking. After your first journey, you’ll get 15 percent off your next booking and 20 percent off after your second and third trips. Students also receive increased flexibility, extra baggage allowance, and complimentary onboard Wi-Fi. You can extend your privileges to friends and family by selecting them to be student companions. If you fly once a year while enrolled in the program, you will receive a one-time elite status tier upgrade when you graduate. Enrolling in the program is quick and free but can provide substantial savings if you’re a Qatar frequent flier.

Students ages 16 to 31 can receive up to 10 percent off economy and business class fares by using the promo code STUDENT to book a flight from now until March 31, 2025. You’ll also receive increased flexibility on your bookings. For all flights except those to/from Canada and the U.S., you will get 10 kilograms more or an extra piece of luggage. To qualify, you need a valid student ID or school acceptance letter at check-in.

SAS is another airline that offers youth tickets , but the amount you save will depend on the route you take and is difficult to predict. You must be between 12 and 25 years old and have a valid ID to be eligible. Seat availability is limited and is only available in specific booking classes (V class/O class). To redeem, simply search for a youth ticket.

Lufthansa has a looser interpretation of “student.” To qualify for their student fare benefits , you must be 16 or older and either be enrolled in higher education or have proof that you’ve been accepted. You can search for and book student fares once you verify your student status based on your departure country. Destinations will depend on your origin, but if you attend school in the U.S., you can fly to Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and India. Apart from savings, student fares also offer rebooking and refunds.

Turkish Airlines

Turkish Airlines has a great student program . You can receive up to 20 percent off domestic flights within Turkey and up to 15 percent off international flights. You also get an increased baggage allowance, a free ticket change, and 25 percent bonus miles on flights through the end of 2024. You simply need to create a Miles&Smiles account, verify your student status, and book your ticket.

Related: The Best Time to Book a Flight for Domestic, International, and Summer Travel

Bottom Line

These programs are free to enroll in, so it only makes sense to take advantage of them if you are a student or eligible young adult who wants to see the world. Even if the savings aren’t substantial, every little bit helps when you’re on a budget.

Qatar Airways touches down for the first time in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo

' src=

Qatar Airways has opened up a new gateway in Africa, connecting the DRC with Europe, the Middle East and Asia. The inaugural flight from Doha to Kinshasa landed at N’djili International Airport on Saturday, 1 June 2024, bringing the total number of African destinations served by the airline to 29.

The new route promises to connect Kinshasa to the world via Qatar Airways’ Doha hub, Hamad International Airport, the ‘World’s Best Airport’ as voted by Skytrax in 2024.

Additionally, this strategic move by the airline will improve air connectivity across the African continent and will forge stronger economic and business prospects as well as cultural ties.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, said: “At Qatar Airways, we recognise the immense potential in Africa. We are dedicated to enhancing connectivity throughout the continent, enabling seamless access to business and leisure opportunities. We look forward to offering our passengers travelling to and from the DRC convenient travel options through our award-winning hub, Hamad International Airport.”

The four weekly services will also increase capacity to Angola, raising the number of flights to Luanda from one to four. The addition of Kinshasa also complements the airline’s over 170 weekly flights across Africa, emphasising Qatar Airways’ commitment to enhancing connectivity throughout the continent.

There has been a strong growth in the market with nine new destinations operated by Qatar Airways in Africa since December 2020. Abidjan, Abuja, Accra, Kinshasa, Harare, Kano, Luanda, Lusaka, and Port Harcourt are the African cities newly added to the extensive Qatar Airways network, while Cairo and Alexandria were resumed.

In addition, Qatar Airways schedules in most of the Africa markets have been optimised in the last 12 months to ensure convenient connectivity to China. It is also the case with Luanda, and now Kinshasa with this new flight that conveniently connects with key markets such as Belgium, France, Portugal and the Middle East.

Kinshasa, which is the capital of the DRC, is the third largest city in Africa, after Cairo and Lagos. Also serving as the economic hub of the country, Kinshasa presents different opportunities for investment and tourism. The bustling city, nestled along the Congo river, is also known for its cultural diversity, lively music scene and pristine nature; attracting both urban explorers and nature enthusiasts.

C.I.A. Director to Meet With Israeli Counterpart This Weekend Over Cease-Fire Talks

It was unclear if negotiators from Egypt and Qatar would participate.

  • Share full article

A man with white-gray hair, dark eyebrows and a slight mustache wearing a suit jacket and tie.

Reporting from Washington

  • May 23, 2024

William J. Burns, the C.I.A. director, who has been the lead American negotiator in efforts for a cease-fire in Gaza, plans to travel to Europe this weekend for talks with his Israeli counterpart to try to revive the stalled discussions over a pause in the fighting and the release of hostages, according to a U.S. official and another person briefed on the negotiations.

This month, frustration boiled over between officials from Hamas and Israel, and the countries mediating — the United States, Qatar and Egypt — put the talks on hold.

Israeli officials were upset with what they saw as shifting negotiating stances by Hamas, including the number of hostages to be released in a first phase. Hamas was upset by Israel’s operations in Rafah, the southern Gazan city, which have been progressing since.

But core to the dispute were disagreements over how to define a cessation of hostilities between Hamas and Israel, and how different stages of the cease-fire would be put into effect.

The resumption of talks, at an undisclosed location in Europe, is expected to take place over the next few days. It is not clear if Egyptian and Qatari negotiators will join Mr. Burns and David Barnea, the chief of the Mossad, Israel’s spy agency, to directly take part in the discussions.

Mr. Burns, however, has been in close contact with Egyptian and Qatari negotiators as the mediators look to get the talks back on track, said a U.S. official.

In early May, Mr. Burns did shuttle diplomacy between Egypt and Israel trying to push for the first phase of an agreement to begin, including a staggered process for the release of hostages and a temporary halt in fighting.

The talks in the coming days are expected to be the first since that round of negotiations ended. While it is unclear what could be achieved with Mr. Burns’s new discussions, restarting the talks is, at this point, a notable development.

U.S. officials say a hostage-for-cease-fire agreement has to be reached for all their other diplomatic efforts to get momentum, including discussions of a postwar administration in Gaza and a megadeal for a Palestinian state that the Americans and Saudis want Israel to agree to.

But Israeli military operations in Rafah continue to complicate the picture. The more aggressive the Israeli operations there, the less Hamas wants to negotiate.

Some American officials have said Israel is taking their advice on how to mitigate some civilian casualties — which has contributed to an erosion of international support for Israel with over 35,000 people dead, according to the Gazan health authorities.

On Wednesday, Jake Sullivan, the U.S. national security adviser, said he was optimistic that Israel, so far, was not conducting the kind of major operation in Rafah that the United States had feared it would. But questions remain about exactly what the Israeli intentions for Rafah over the longer term might be.

News and Analysis

After a barrage from Hezbollah militants on northern Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened a “very intense”  military response.

Even as Hamas and Israel appear to be inching closer to a cease-fire agreement, analysts are skeptical that the sides will ever implement a deal  that goes beyond a temporary truce.

Some Gazans are urging Hamas to accept a cease-fire plan outlined by President Biden, but many remain deeply skeptical  that the United States, as Israel’s chief ally, would truly bring an end to the war.

Columbia Law School: The website of the Columbia Law Review was taken offline by its board of directors after its editors published  an article arguing Palestinians are living under a “brutally sophisticated structure of oppression” by Israel that is a crime against humanity.

A Debate at Holocaust Museums: The Israel-Hamas war has also forced Holocaust museums to confront one of the most emotional and divisive issues within the Jewish community: how to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian conflict .

In the West Bank: Since the war in Gaza began, armed Jewish settlers in the Israeli-occupied territory, often accompanied by the army, have stepped up seizures of land long used by Palestinians .

A Fateful Encounter: In an Israeli prison infirmary, a Jewish dentist came to the aid of a desperately ill Hamas inmate. Years later, the prisoner became a mastermind of the Oct. 7 attack .
