What Size Travel Trailer Can A Dodge Ram 1500 Pull?

The Ram 1500 can comfortably tow between 6,760 and 11,650 pounds—perhaps more if you invest in a specialized towing package.

As you probably know, not all trucks are up to the task. We’re here to clue you in on whether this particular model is suited to hauling–and if so, what size trailer it can handle.

In addition to pointing out the towing capacities of the various Dodge Ram 1500 models, we’ll cover the following points:

  • How do the manufacturers determine a truck’s towing capacity?
  • What is payload capacity, and what effect does it have on the towing capabilities?
  • Is it possible to use a Ram 1500 to tow a fifth wheel camper?
  • How do the different engine styles affect the towing process?
  • Does the Ram 1500 need 4-wheel drive in order to tow a camper?

The Dodge Ram 1500: A Breakdown

Before we begin, let’s take a look at the various trim levels that Dodge offers for this model.

As you can see, the engine type has a modest effect on the towing capabilities. In the interest of being thorough, we’ve included some relevant information in the chart below.

What Size Truck Do You Need To Pull A Travel Trailer?

You’ll want at least a half-ton truck if you’re hoping to pull a camper that weighs over 6,500 pounds. Depending on the model, these trucks may be able to tow up to 10,000 pounds.

The Ram 1500 is an example of a half-ton truck. That means it should be able to pull your medium-sized camper trailer without hardship. If you opt for a powerful engine (see separate section below), you may even be able to exceed the 10,000 pound limit.

For larger campers, go for a 3/4-ton to a full-ton truck. These will give you more leeway when packing and reduce the risk of overload.

How Do The Manufacturers Determine Tow Capacity?

The tow capacity of a truck is the maximum amount of weight that it can safely pull. Exceeding this capacity can cause damage to the engine and transmission of the vehicle—and even the tires and frame.

So where do the manufacturers get these numbers? Interestingly enough, market research is responsible for some of the data. The engineers contact actual customers to find out what they’d like to haul, and research their competitors for current trends. The goal is to match what the customers would like to see, and exceed the towing capacity of comparable models.

Similarly, the ratings come in handy when it’s time to upgrade the models for the new year. If consumers are satisfied with the older models, the manufacturers won’t bother to make any changes. Conversely, if the ratings indicate that the current tow capacity is unsatisfactory, they’ll boost the weight and the cooling drag of the vehicle to give it more towing power.

The next step is capability testing. The engineers need to make sure the truck has enough torque to get the load moving, even if it has to start from a complete stop when parked on an uphill slope. The cooling capabilities need to be efficient enough to avoid overheating in hot weather, and the brake capacity must be capable of withstanding the heavier load.

These tests are rigorous, beginning at the laboratory level before moving on to the practical sessions. The trucks are put through their paces in all manners of weather, from extreme heat to heavy humidity to bitter cold. When they’re finished, the manufacturers are confident that the vehicle will be able to handle the amount of weight that’s listed in the user manual.

Important Terms To Remember

The following factors all come into play when engineers are determining the tow capacity of a truck or SUV. It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with them so you can understand how each one relates to the process.

Put simply, horsepower is the force that moves the vehicle forward. A higher HP level means more power. The 2022 Dodge Ram HP levels for the 1500 models range from 260 to 702, depending on type.

The torque specs refer to the energy required to spin the wheels themselves. This is essential when the vehicle is starting from a standstill, but once it’s in motion, the truck doesn’t have to rely on this energy anymore.

For more information on how torque relates to towing, see How Does The Engine Style Affect The Towing Process?, below.

Vehicles with higher axle ratios can handle heavier loads than those with low axle ratios. On the other hand, a lower ratio is better for fuel conservation, especially if you have a light load to begin with. Here’s why.

The axle is responsible for determining how many revolutions the tires will make based on the energy available. Slow-spinning wheels deliver more power while burning up more energy, while faster spinning expends less energy but isn’t as effective when it comes to towing a great deal of weight.

What Is Payload Capacity?

Payload is a term used to describe the weight capacity and suspension of the truck box. It refers to the amount of weight that the truck can hold in the cab or cargo bed. The tongue weight, or degree of pressure that the towing hitch puts on the vehicle, helps the manufacturers calculate this number.

Tongue weight is determined by the overall weight of the travel trailer, as well as weight distribution. It’s a bad idea for most of the weight to be supported by the hitch, as it may cause it to break in half. That’s why it’s a good idea to steer clear of higher tongue weights.

Proper weight distribution can also help reduce the amount of sway that occurs during driving. This is true especially if the travel trailer is especially light or carries most of its weight in the rear.

For optimum results, aim for a tongue weight that’s somewhere around 10 percent of the loaded trailer weight.

Can a Dodge Ram 1500 Tow A Fifth Wheel Camper?

Although this model is equipped to handle moderately heavy loads, it doesn’t have the separate towing capacity that’s required for fifth wheel trailers. The truck bed is often too short, meaning you would have to purchase a stationary hitch and a Sidewinder pin box for the camper.

Since fifth wheel campers are generally quite large, it’s better to choose a 3/4-ton truck to ensure safer towing. If you’re hoping to stay with the same make, the Dodge Ram 2500 might be a good option.

That doesn’t mean it’s impossible to tow a fifth wheel with the 1500, but you’ll have to read the specs carefully. It’s best if the fifth wheel is on the smaller and lighter end of the spectrum, just to make sure it doesn’t exceed the truck’s capabilities.

How Does The Engine Style Affect The Towing Process?

As you can see from the table above, a truck with a 5.7-Liter V8 HEMI engine can tow roughly 1,000 pounds more than the same model with a lesser engine. In general, higher torque specs and/or horsepower ratings result in the engine being able to handle heavier loads.

A high torque is critical to effective towing because it allows the truck to perform tasks without expending too much energy. If an engine has high horsepower but a lesser torque, it will have to work harder in order to tow the same load as one with a higher torque. It may still be able to do it, but if you compare the two performances side by side, you’ll be able to see which is more effective.

Since diesel engines have more torque than those that run on regular gasoline, they can usually haul more weight. As a bonus, diesel gets better fuel mileage. Therefore, you’ll have better luck if you restrict your search to include Dodge Ram models that include diesel engines.

Does The Truck Need 4-Wheel Drive To Pull A Camper Trailer?

The only times 4-wheel drive comes in handy during towing are during inclement weather, or when the road is especially muddy. Since the same principles apply whether you’re towing a camper trailer or not, I wouldn’t say that 4-wheel drive is necessary.

In fact, it’s a bad idea to pull a travel trailer on dry pavement with the truck set to 4-wheel drive. You want the power to come from the rear of the vehicle, as the rear axle will be bearing the brunt of the weight. If you’re in 4-wheel drive, the power will be distributed between the front and rear axles.

If you plan to take your camper out in winter, or if you frequently drive along dirt roads, then the 4-wheel drive might come in handy. For normal towing conditions, however, 2-wheel drive is sufficient.

In Conclusion

There are a number of excellent travel trailers that weigh under 10,000 pounds, so if you already own a Dodge Ram and are looking for a camper, you should be able to find one that suits your needs. On the other hand, if you need a towing vehicle that can handle your current camper, one of these models just might have you covered.

Good luck in your travels, and happy camping!

How Much Will a RAM 1500 Tow?

What travel trailer size can a ram 1500 pull, can a ram 1500 tow a fifth wheel trailer, the towing capacity of different ram 1500 models and years, engine strength, the length and weight of the truck, tongue weight, towing package, trailer tow package, which full-size trucks provide similar towing capacities to the ram 1500, which ram 1500 can tow the most, can a 2022 ram 1500 tow a fifth wheeler, what is the longest trailer you can pull with a ram 1500 pickup truck.

Hauling peers are up for some good news with the pulling power of the 2022 edition of the RAM 1500. The truck brand offers five engines for its latest addition to the RAM line vehicles, with the 5.7L HEMI V8 Engine with eTorque and the 6.2L HEMI V8 providing the highest towing capacity of 12,750 lbs. The flagship Supercharged 6.2L HEMI V8 Engine has the same maximum towing capacity of 12,750 lbs, it does go from 0 to 60 MPH in 4.5 seconds, has 702 horsepower, and 650 lb of torque.

A RAM 1500 can easily pull between 7,730 and 12,750 lbs – but the number is dependent on the specific trim. The highest towing capacity comes with the 5.7L HEMI V8 with eTorque option, while the 3.6L Pentastar V6 with eTorque engine can pull up to 7,730 lbs.

The RAM 1500 was engineered to be a sturdy truck that could haul immense weight anywhere. Its durability makes it the preferred choice for towing large travel trailers . The maximum towing capacity is available with the more powerful engine and specialized towing package.

On average, travel trailers weighing 9,000 pounds will not be a challenge for any of the high-end RAM models. However, it’s recommended to stay within the specified limits for better maneuverability and safety.

For reference, a travel trailer like the Airstream Classic 30 FB, with 8,000 lbs dry weight and length of 31.5 feet, can easily be towed with the RAM 1500 models.

Thanks to the powerful engines and robust chassis, the truck will accommodate various sized trailers and campers. In that regard, towing a medium-sized camper trailer with your RAM 1500 will be an effortless drive.

Moreover, RAM has a track record of providing durability when pulling things on rough and snow-laden roads.

The RAM 1500 can handle moderately heavy loads, and technically speaking, some types of fifth-wheeler trailers are within its reach. However, the truck lacks the separate towing capacity for larger fifth-wheelers.

One of the problems is that the truck bed is short , requiring a stationary hitch and extra equipment to get the full potential. You probably already know that fifth-wheelers are more appropriate for heavy-duty trucks.

This fact should not discourage RAM 1500 owners or potential buyers, as it’s not impossible to tow a fifth-wheel trailer. You just have to follow the specifications carefully and select a fifth-wheeler that is lighter and within the truck’s towing capabilities.

The bottom line is – if you’re hoping to stay in the RAM family and you want to tow a large fifth-wheel trailer, the RAM 2500 would be a more suitable option.

Dodge keeps to its original vision of the RAM 1500 but includes yearly improvements, which reflects in the towing capacity as well. Inspect the models by year and identify the engine performance and how it has shaped the towing discussion relating to this truck.

What Affects the Overall Towing Capacity Of The RAM 1500?

What's the RAM 1500 Towing Capacity - What Trailers and Campers Can It Safely Tow? 1

The engine’s power is the first thing that comes to mind when considering the towing performance of a pick-up truck. But in reality, the engine is only one component of the entire design that facilitates efficient and safe hauling of materials and campers.

Several other crucial parameters contribute to the pull of the RAM 1500. Let’s have a more detailed look at them and see what makes them tick.

For the 2022 model, RAM has 3 different engines, each of which delivers a different level of performance. The 5.7L HEMI V8 Engine with eTorque pumps out 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft. of torque, enabling the truck to pull up to 12,750 lbs. The same engine without eTorque offers 11,610 lbs of towing potential.

Shoulder to shoulder with the two previously mentioned engine models is the 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 Engine that generates torque amounting to 480 lb-ft, which is enough force to haul 12,560 lbs.

At the lower end of the spectrum, we have the 3.6L PENTASTAR V6 Engine with eTorque that maxes out at 305 horsepower and produces 269 lb-ft. of torque, making it suitable for towing up to 7,730 lbs.

The torque, which is the force required to rotate an object around its axis, is an important parameter when considering the truck’s towing capacity. A higher axle ratio offers more torque, translating into a bigger and more consistent pull. The downside is that fuel consumption increases.

The RAM 1500 has an axle ratio of 3.92 with the 5.7L V-8 HEMI and the 3.0L V-6 EcoDiesel. The standard option with the 3.6L V-6 engine has an axle ratio of 3.21. When hauling heavy loads, you will sacrifice speed by compensating with more power to pull the extra weight.

The overall length of the 2022 edition of the RAM 1500 is 232.9 inches. Depending on the model, the truck’s bed takes 5 foot 7 inches or 6-foot 4-inch of the overall length. The width, including the mirrors, is 82.1 inches. The weight is not as uniform and ranges from 4,775 pounds to 6,439 pounds unloaded.

Why the discrepancy? There are eight versions of the RAM 1500 properly named Tradesman, Tradesman HFE, Big Horn, Laramie, Rebel, Limited Longhorn, Limited, and TRX.

With 6,439 pounds, the TRX is the king in the weight department, while the skinniest truck in the series is the Tradesman at 4,775 pounds.

There is a difference between the curb weight and the gross vehicle weight. The former reveals the empty weight of the truck, while the latter indicates how much load a truck can support, including passengers and cargo.

In the case of the RAM 1500, the payload capacity will vary depending on the selected configuration. Every model differs in the bed length and type of cabin.

However, dimensions affect the size of material that can get transported and the number of passengers. What we are after is their allowed weight, and you’ll find that the manufacturers state that the maximum payload capacity is 2,300 pounds.

The respectable payload is possible because of the durability offered by the high-strength steel frame. The frame makes the RAM 1500 series a workhorse for construction workers and farmers, as it’s an all-terrain vehicle that can safely transport material and up to 6 passengers in the quad cabin type.

When using a truck for towing, weight is a crucial piece of the equation. Although many only consider the weight of a camper or trailer, the tongue weight shouldn’t get overlooked. Knowing your vehicle tongue weight ensures safe travel; otherwise, you may get in trouble when towing a trailing boat or camper.

Tongue weight is the amount of loaded weight that sits behind the truck’s rear axle. Going over the vehicle’s specified tongue weight would result in improper balance with swaying and wobbling, creating a potentially dangerous driving situation.

The RAM 1500 tongue weight is 1,100 pounds, meaning hitching any trailer that exceeds 12,000 pounds is a risky move. Take note, though, that this only applies for the high-end models in the 2022 series of RAM 1500. You should consult your owner’s guide or your dealer for the lower-tier versions.

The towing package consists of parts that improve the safety and capacity of a truck to pull campers and trailers. RAM offers several options, and most models come with standard features already installed, but drivers can also upgrade an existing model.

The typical set-up comes with a hitch receiver, an integrated trailer brake controller , a seven-pin wiring harness, and a trailer brake-wiring harness. In addition to extra-large mirrors, there’s a rear backup camera , coupled with a parking assist system that improves awareness when backing out of thigh spaces.

Marketers are very crafty in repackaging items and selling them under a new label, offering better performance. The trailer tow packages sometimes confuse drivers, wondering if there is a substantial difference from the standard tow packages. Moreover, there are plenty of after-market products that can improve towing capabilities.

However, in the case of RAM, its dedicated trailer tow package is named Trailer-Tow Group. It comes with a Class IV receiver hitch and trailer brake controller, which is electronic with full integration, and there are the trailer tow mirrors. This is not the fanciest gear, but it gets the job done.

Trucks are getting firmer, with full-size pickups cruising effortlessly with 12.700 pounds hitched to the back. While RAM 1500 is becoming an iconic brand for truck enthusiasts, this is not the only full-size pick-up in town.

The competition is intense, with several manufacturers delivering on advertised towing capacities. For you, selecting the appropriate truck for towing will balance your lifestyle and utility.

Some of the models with similar towing performances include:

  • GMC Sierra 1500 – up to 9,400 lbs
  • Toyota Tundra – up to 12,000 lbs
  • Chevrolet Silverado 1500 – up to 11,000 lbs
  • Ford F-150 – up to 11,300 lbs

RAM 1500 Towing Capacity FAQ

The maximum towing capacity for a 2022 edition of the RAM 1500 is 12,750 pounds. However, not all models for the popular series are created equal. As a general rule in the 2022 RAM 1500 series, if you are sporting a V8 under the hood, you are set to go with the maximum hauling capacity.

The short answer is yes, but it is not that simple. Fifth Wheel towing uses a non-conventional hitch, which connects to the truck’s bed over the rear axle. This set-up creates different weight requirements, opposite to the standard rear hitch towing, and places the RAM 1500 at the limits of what’s possible with a fifth-wheel trailer or camper. Each 2022 model has different towing capacities, which complicates matters even more. If planning to tow a lighter fifth-wheel trailer that you can pull off, but for bigger campers, it’s best to go for a different model truck.

The maximum legal length of the trailer is 45 feet, but with the RAM 1500, you should stick to campers and trailers that are 30 feet in length and meet the weight requirements. Most campers in that class are between 8,000 and 12,000 pounds, which is within RAM 1500 pulling capacity. Turning at corners requires a different driving style when you have another object hitched to the truck. Be aware of the extra length behind the truck when hauling a trailer.

The good news is that the Ram 1500 is a capable truck with a solid towing capacity. However, there are various factors to consider before hitching up your camper and hitting the road. Let’s take a closer look at the Ram 1500’s towing capabilities.

Key Takeaways

  • The Ram 1500 has a towing capacity , but it depends on various factors like engine options and towing packages.
  • You can tow a travel trailer with the Ram 1500, but it’s crucial to consider the trailer’s weight, length, and tongue weight.
  • Additional considerations like payload capacity, trailer brakes, and suspension upgrades can optimize your Ram 1500 for camper towing.
  • It’s essential to follow safe towing practices to ensure a smooth and enjoyable camping trip with your Ram 1500.
  • If the Ram 1500 isn’t suitable for your camper towing needs, you can explore alternative options like larger trucks or SUVs.

Understanding the Ram 1500’s Towing Capacity

The towing capacity of the Ram 1500 is an important factor to consider when deciding if it’s suitable for your camper towing needs. Several factors affect the towing capacity, including engine options, axle ratios, and optional towing packages. Let’s take a closer look at these factors to understand the Ram 1500’s towing capabilities.

Note: Towing capacity varies based on the Ram 1500 configuration and equipment. Always refer to the vehicle’s owner manual and consult with experts if you have questions or doubts.

Axle ratios also play a significant role in the towing capacity of the Ram 1500. The higher the number, the higher the towing capacity. For instance, a Ram 1500 equipped with a 3.92 rear axle ratio can tow up to 12,750 pounds, while one with a 3.21 axle ratio has a maximum towing capacity of 7,730 pounds. Optional towing packages, such as the Trailer Tow Package and the Max Tow Package, can also enhance the Ram 1500’s towing capability.

Understanding the Ram 1500’s towing capacity is crucial to determine if it can handle your camper’s weight and size. Keep in mind that the towing capacity is only one factor to consider when deciding if the Ram 1500 is suitable for your camper towing needs. Other factors, such as payload capacity, suspension upgrades, and trailer brake controllers, also play an important role.

Can a Ram 1500 Tow a Travel Trailer?

If you’re looking to tow a travel trailer with your Ram 1500, there are a few key factors to consider. One of the most crucial is the weight of the travel trailer itself. You’ll want to make sure that your Ram 1500 has the towing capacity necessary to handle your particular travel trailer.

Another critical factor is the length of the travel trailer. Longer trailers can be more challenging to maneuver, especially if you’re traveling in areas with tight turns or narrow roads. Your Ram 1500’s towing capability may limit the length of the travel trailer you can tow safely.

The tongue weight of your travel trailer is also essential to consider. This weight should not exceed your Ram 1500’s tongue weight rating. Make sure to double-check this number before connecting your trailer to your Ram 1500.

It’s worth noting that some Ram 1500 models are better suited for towing than others. For example, the Ram 1500 equipped with the 5.7L HEMI® V8 engine and the available Max Tow Package has a maximum towing capacity of up to 12,750 pounds. This combination is ideal for towing larger travel trailers.

Towing a Camper with Ram 1500: What You Need to Know

If you’re planning to tow a camper with your Ram 1500, it’s crucial to understand the different options available for camper towing. By choosing the right equipment and techniques, you can ensure a safe and comfortable towing experience. Let’s take a closer look at some of the most popular options for Ram 1500 truck camper towing .

Weight Distribution Hitches

Weight distribution hitches are a popular choice for towing larger campers with the Ram 1500. They work by redistributing the weight of the camper evenly across the tow vehicle and the trailer axles, reducing the strain on the rear suspension and improving stability and control. When choosing a weight distribution hitch, make sure to consider the weight of your camper and the Ram 1500’s towing capacity.

Sway Control

Sway control is another essential feature to ensure safe and comfortable towing. It helps to keep the camper from swaying or fishtailing and provides better handling in adverse weather conditions or strong crosswinds. There are different types of sway control available, including friction sway control, dual-cam sway control, and electronic sway control. Consider the type of camper you have and the driving conditions you’ll encounter to choose the right sway control option.

Trailer Brake Controllers

Trailer brake controllers are an essential component of any camper towing setup. They allow you to apply the trailer’s brakes independent of the tow vehicle’s brakes, increasing safety and control on the road. There are different types of trailer brake controllers, including time-delayed and proportional controllers. Make sure to choose a trailer brake controller that is compatible with your Ram 1500’s braking system and the weight of your camper.

By using weight distribution hitches, sway control, and trailer brake controllers, you can ensure a safe and smooth towing experience with your Ram 1500. It’s always important to choose the right equipment and techniques for your specific camper and driving conditions. Now that you know what you need to tow a camper with a Ram 1500 let’s explore the camper towing capability of the Ram 1500 in the next section.

Exploring the Ram 1500’s Camper Towing Capability

When it comes to towing a camper, understanding your vehicle’s towing capacity is crucial. Let’s take a closer look at the Ram 1500’s camper towing capability in different configurations.

As you can see, the Ram 1500 has a strong towing capacity, making it suitable for a variety of camper sizes. However, it’s important to note that towing capacity can vary based on additional factors such as the cab style, bed length, and 2WD or 4WD systems.

When towing a camper with the Ram 1500, it’s essential to stay within the manufacturer’s recommended weight limits for your specific setup. Failing to do so can lead to reduced performance, excess wear and tear on your vehicle, and even safety hazards.

  • Payload capacity : The maximum amount of weight that your Ram 1500 can carry. Make sure to adjust for any passengers, cargo, or gear you’re bringing along on your camper adventure.
  • Trailer brakes : According to etrailer.com, “if your Ram came with a factory tow package, it also came with a factory wiring harness that includes a brake controller port.” If your Ram 1500 doesn’t come with a built-in brake controller, you can have one installed aftermarket.
  • Suspension upgrades : Depending on the weight of your loaded camper, suspension upgrades may be necessary to ensure smooth and stable towing. Consider upgrading the shocks, springs, or sway bars as needed.

Tips for Safe and Efficient Camper Towing with the Ram 1500

When it comes to towing a camper with your Ram 1500, safety should be your top priority. Here are some tips to ensure a smooth and enjoyable camping trip:

  • Check your Ram 1500’s towing capacity: Before towing a camper, check your vehicle’s manual or consult with a professional to ensure you do not exceed the recommended towing capacity.
  • Use weight distribution: For better balance and stability, use weight distribution hitches to distribute the weight of the camper evenly across the vehicle.
  • Get sway control: Sway control devices can help prevent the camper from swaying back and forth, which can lead to dangerous situations.
  • Install a brake controller: Trailer brake controllers ensure a safer and smoother stop when towing a camper.
  • Inspect your camper: Ensure that your camper is in good condition, including tires, brakes, and lights. Replace any worn out or damaged parts before hitting the road.
  • Drive cautiously: When towing a camper, drive slower and leave more distance between other vehicles to ensure better control and prevent accidents.

By following these tips and best practices, you can ensure that your Ram 1500 is optimized for safe and efficient camper towing.

Exploring Other Towing Options if the Ram 1500 Isn’t Suitable

While the Ram 1500 is a powerful and capable towing vehicle, it may not always meet your camper towing needs. In such cases, you may want to explore other options that offer greater towing capacities. Below are some alternatives to consider:

If your camper is on the heavier side and requires a towing capacity beyond the Ram 1500’s capability, one of these vehicles may be a better fit for you. Be sure to research the specific towing capacity for each model and compare it to your camper’s weight to make an informed decision.

After exploring the Dodge Ram 1500’s towing capacity, it’s clear that it can pull certain campers within its limits. However, there are several factors to consider, including engine options, axle ratios, and trailer weight. It’s important to consult the specific towing capacity for your Ram 1500 configuration and consider additional factors like payload capacity, trailer brakes, and suspension upgrades. Following safe towing practices, such as weight distribution and proper maintenance, will ensure a smooth and enjoyable camping adventure with your Ram 1500.

In summary, the Ram 1500 is a capable vehicle for camper towing, but it may not be suitable for all towing needs. If the Ram 1500 isn’t the right choice for your towing requirements, there are other options available such as larger trucks or SUVs with greater towing capacities.

hello, I have a 1500 outdoorsman 2017 with the towing package. I want to buy a 6300 lbs trsvel trailer 32 feet long. The weight on the hitch will be 700 lbs. Do you think that with the original suspension and the torsion bars it will be correct or would you make a modification to the suspension?

travel trailer for dodge ram 1500

You will want easy lift, or load levelers, and sway control for the trailer if it doesn't come with it. It would be unsafe to tow without them. You can get them as two separate systems or both combined into one. My last trailer had two separate systems that I used for it. That is the old way of doing it.A purchased a new trailer last summer and it came with the new kind where load leveling and sway control in one setup and it's much better. I would personally add new coil springs in the rear. I have on my truck, but I did it for while hauling stuff in the back of the truck, not for towing, but it is helpful. You don't have to upgrade the suspension, but I think it does make the truck better.

Thank you for your answer ! Yes the trailer come with loads leveler and sway control. if I change the coils for more rigid, does the unloaded driving going to be less comfortable with heavy duty springs? if I change the coils, it will only be for towing the trailer 3-4 times a year.

Look into the Tuff Truck 1223-V springs. They are variable, get stiffer as you add a load. They ride almost exactly like stock unloaded, but stiffen up as you add weight and will help lessen the sag and help dampen the porpoising on certain roads. I've had them on mine, a 2010, for years, and think it's whats the factory should have originally equipped them with.

Like jawzs2 said try the Tuftruck springs. They’ve got several models to choose from. I’ve got the 1223’s, but I carry a lot of weight all the time. The 1223v’s or 1211’s might be good for you. You can call the company and help guide you to the model that will be best for you.

Thanks guys !

had a '17, 5.7 no tow package. pulled a toy hauler. 6600#. within 80% of tow rating but tongue weight was 900#. much smarter people than me out there, but pulling a trailer is more than the tow rating. at 700# tongue you only have 3-400# payload left. by the time you load passengers and gear, most of that will be gone and that 700 is likely dry weight. never felt the 5.7 hemi couldn't do the job but never felt "comfortable". sorta the tail wagging the dog sometimes. went to a '17 2500 5.7, night and day difference. found a website with a calculator that confirmed my "feelings". once i plugged in the specs, it showed me where i was close and where it was sketchy or where i was in trouble. stay safe out there

Another option that I like is air bags. I put a set of Timber Grove bags on mine and absolutely love it. You run low pressure when you don't need them and your ride is just like factory, or add air to them when you are hauling/towing. It makes squatting with a load a thing of the past.

A 32 footer on a 1500 is a load. Loaded with full fresh water tanks and empty grey and black tanks you can be at 8000 lbs. You need to turn your 1500 into a "2000" 5/8th ton truck to tow that safely. I use Eze-Lifts on my tiny 18' on my 1500 tow equipped. In a wind and rough roads, it keeps the trailer behind me so much better, and rides and handles better too. Honestly, I wouldn't choose to pull an Airstream 10 meter Gold Regal behind a 1500, and that's the lightest trailer in that class. I really hope you aren't towing into garage bills. RXGAC, I towed my tiny trailer with Dakotas and it was fine, but I pulled a 21 footer to the lake for a friend with the Dakota, and while I was with-in the ratings, it handled poorly and I didn't like exceeding 65 MPH, kinda "loose" back there. I pulled an 8 meter (25') Airstream to the RV show in Jan. for a dealer, and behind the 1500 Ram, I barely knew it was back there. Used the dealer's 3500 Ram to pull a 5th wheel to the show, I think a 42', couldn't feel it, but I don't care for the knob shifter on the 8 speed. Let's go back to push-buttons!

Have you looked at YOUR truck's payload rating? Yellow sticker on driver side door jamb. Says something like passengers and cargo not to exceed XXX pounds. This will be your limiting factor way before you hit Max towing capability. payload includes tongue weight of trailer, plus weight of weight distributing hitch (WDH) in the receiver, cargo and all passengers minus 150# allowed for driver and a full tank of gas. ALSO make sure you put LT, LTX or E rated tires on the truck... this will stiffen the sidewalls over the stock P-rated tires and reduce trailer sway. Might need airbags, like the Airlift 1000 or 5000 series for rear sag if you can't adjust the WDH to get rid of front end lift. Youtube setting up trailer WDH for how to do that.

foolish with a 1500..just not enough truck...

The truck can easily handle the trailer load and forget about the misguided comment about payload going down when passengers are in the cab. All the truck manufacturers reduce the payload amount by 150 lbs per passenger seat in the cab. That is why a regular cab truck will have the greatest payload rating. The primary problem with a large travel trailer is the air drag for the truck which increases with the square of the speed. At 70 mph the drag is 4x that at 35 mph and the engine is working to overcome that drag and not the weight of the trailer. Buy the trailer and take it for a short trip and see what problems you encounter. Along the way, stop at a CAT scale and pay the $15 to have the truck and trailer weighed. Then you will know exactly how much of a load is on the hitch and what the true unloaded weight of the trailer is as compared to the manufacturer's sticker. I do not know about where you live and will travel but in the western US as RV lengths extend past 28 feet the campground site options diminish considerably. A USFS campground may have 4 spaces for very long trailers and if people with shorter trailers or even a SUV and tent campers take those spaces before you arrive you will be out of luck.

Dodge Ram 1500 Towing A Travel Trailer

travel trailer for dodge ram 1500

  • Add to quote

I have a 2010 Dodge Ram 1500, Hemi, 4x4, automatic, Quad Cab, 6.5 bed, Class IV hitch with Tekonsha Prodigy brake controller, 3.55 rear end, 22" tires. I want to pull a travel trailer from Massachusetts to Oregon. Within reason, what is the largest trailer I can tow safely and easily? I don't want a 5th wheel, just Class IV hitch. I don't mind tow bars. What do you guys tow. Let's see some pictures. Keep in mind the Rocky Mountains and high heat in summer.

travel trailer for dodge ram 1500

Dunno, but based on how it is to tow my little 14' enclosed cargo trailer (even nearly empty), I would say to definitely spend $100+ and put some airbags in before you try it.

travel trailer for dodge ram 1500

X2 It make a big differece on how it tows. I love my bags.

I assume you meant 22" rims ? How large is the outside diameter of the tire you are using ? When your vehicle was stock it was rated to pull a 8500 lb trailer (of average frontal area) as shown in the dodge bodybuilders guide http://www.dodge.com/bodybuilder/2010/docs/ram/rammlup1500.pdf Your tires are likely taller than OEM so that is going to start ratcheting back your ultimate tow capability just as if you had a smaller numerical axle ratio. You must pay attention to your tongue weight and ensure you do not violate the GVW and GAWR ratings as well. When towing any combination near the max of its rating you do need a weight distributing hitch. (levelling bars) And yes, the stock truck will pull this over the rockies although it will be working HARD as you cross the continental divide. If you tow in that enviroment often, it is far better to undershoot your max GCWR by a good margain. Your anxiety level will be much better around 6500 - which is a fairly decent sized camper. When making a trip of this magnitude - do yourself a favor and weigh your rig at the truck scales - a properly set up combination is unbelievebly better than a poorly set up one. Weigh the truck first with each axle on a separate plate - then with your loaded trailer attached and its axles on a third plate. Do all your math for max weight, weight added to the truck (tongue weight) and the amount added to each end of the truck. Move crap around in the trailer to achieve approx 12% of its weight added to the truck with some amount of that adding to the front axle (due to the bars) and you will be a happy camper.

x2 good info.

I pulled a 4,000 plus pound trailer with my 08 QC with no problems. I did use a weight distrubition hitch (Equalizer), had no need for air bags.

Your '08 had leaf springs in the back, not coil springs...

I'm hauling this, its 29ft and 5500 lbs dry, I have weight distribution bars, and it hauls fine. I am going to put air bags in this year though.

Nice looking setup, what gears do you have?

3.92's with the 20" wheels

That the same what I have and when I get my new 2010 that is what I will be getting. Theirs is a lot of 2010 with the 3.21 & 3.55 gears but I told them that I want the 3.92 gears.

travel trailer for dodge ram 1500

I tow a 30' Layton travel trailer that has a dry weight of 6600 lbs. I towed it with my 04 with 3.55s and 17" wheels and it was ok. my 09 has 17" wheels and 3.92s and there is a huge difference. I am going to install air bags very soon. I use a Reese weight distribution bar and friction sway controller with a Prodigy P3 controller.

Why the airbags?

With the coil springs, the truck squats quite a bit with the heavier trailers, my tongue weight is close to 800lbs, while the weight dist hitch helps, the truck really sags trying to get them in place. From what I hear, with the bags and 30lbs of air this will help a lot.

Yeah the airbag will help with the sag.

travel trailer for dodge ram 1500

what are those peices that are around 6 inches high and 3 inches around? my dealer treid selling me some so it would help with my travel trailer and i cant remember the name but i wasnt sure if i wanted them or the air system. they were some type of rubber puck looking thing that was some type of over load protector.

I am going to guess they were some type of coil spacer. They provide lift by keeping a coil from compressing. It makes the ride very harsh and will probably raise the back of your truck a couple inches higher than it already is. With the air bags you lower the pressure when empty and it is not supposed to affect the ride or handling. When loaded add some air to raise the back till the truck is level. The air bags are fairly cheap at about $100 and they don't look too hard to install. They seem more versitile and that is why I am going with them.

Frank I am going to assume you have the stock 20" rims & stock tires with your 3.92s. I would not want to exceed 8,000 lbs to cross the Rockies and even then only with air bags and proper weight distribution and the weight distribution bars. Oh yea check to see what max weight rating is on your tires. Some 17s and E load rating would do it much better.

Yes I booked my truck in for next week,to get them put in. I thought about installing them myself, but they are charging $50 to install, it's not even worth my time to do it myself.

i am leading towards the bags also, i have a 29' travel trailer that i plan on pulling this summer. thanks for the info guys. all i have to do is get the bags and the break controller installed and i should be ready to go.

who makes a good set of airbags for our trucks

travel trailer for dodge ram 1500

airlift part# 60818 just over $100

travel trailer for dodge ram 1500

I have the Firestone Ride Rite bags. About the same price and simple to install, no need to remove the springs, I have heard with others you need to. I can neither confirm nor deny that though. The air bags helped tremendously. My trailer has a dry hitch weight of 560 pounds, with the two batteries and twin 30 pound tanks mounted on the hitch it is a good chunk higher then that. Trailer weighs in about 7,500 pounds fully loaded and the truck squated about 6 inches before the bags. Now, it is about 1 -2. The truck pulls it just fine. The trailer brakes do there thing to help slow it down, no swaying, no porpoising, just normal behavior. I have the 17's and 3.55's but did bump up to 315/75r17 tires. Hell, my wife is pulling the trailer around alone, and she says she can barely tell it's there other then having to hit the skinny pedal harder. These trucks can tow....

I'm awaiting the arrival of the Timbren SES spring kit. My short bed really squats with the 14' enclosed trailer loaded as it is. Have a new 800# TW weight distribution hitch to accompany the Timbrens. Might be over doing it, but I'm used to pulling this load with a 2500 Cummins....

The springs in the 09 are not variable rate. Just take a look at them, they don't change diameter or pitch. I beleive you when you say there are 9 different spring rates. Long bed, short bed, crew cab, quadcab, regular cab, 5.7L, 4.7L, 2WD, 4WD put together all the different possible cominations and you can probably explain the need for nearly 9 different springs.

travel trailer for dodge ram 1500

They are variable rate. Just because they don’t change shape doesn’t mean they aren’t variable.

Don't want to start an aguement, so maybe you might explain a little better your definition of variable rate. But in my understanding a coil spring of constant coil diameter with constant pitch and constant wire diameter is essentially a constant rate spring over virtually all of its travel. I've had the rear springs off of my truck to install the airbags, and they certainly look like a constant rate spring to me. Where as a variable rate spring would have a lower spring rate for normal unloaded ride heights and would increase rate at greater loading (displacement).

I too dont want to start a argument, I really have no proof about the Variable rate springs, except remembering an interview with Giles stating they were. Until I find that video again, I will state they could be single rate, and I might be wrong.

I've towed my 24' trailer twice already with my new truck. Really these springs don't squat too bad in my opinion. After putting my weight distribution bars on she ran at a normal height. My tongue weight is 760 lbs. You could get some bounce back there when hitting a nice bump. But over all it handled as expected and felt safe. Fuel economy sucks pretty bad with my trailer. 7-8 mpg.

Well, I thank everyone for the great info. Can I ask everyone to upload pictures of their rigs with campers hooked on. I'm still devided on which camper to purchase.

Just got back from a 3200 mile trip pulling my 7x14 enclosed trailer. Had installed Tembren overload bumpers in place of the stock yellow ones and have a weight distribution hitch as well. Trailer was loaded very heavy and even with the modifications and hitch, she still had a bad case of squat. The Tembrens kept popping out of the retainer cup and I finally left them in a sideways position all the way to destination...better than nothing. Would buy the air bags next time. 8 mpg was about as good as it got.

travel trailer for dodge ram 1500

Here's my rig.Very little squat.Consistent 12 mpg. I knew I didn't want a bumper/rear hitch trailer.

5 Most Durable Ram 1500 Model Years (5 To Avoid)

Pickup trucks make up approximately 20% of US passenger vehicle sales , and in this large and competitive segment, the Ram Truck (formerly called the Dodge Ram until 2010) has been one of the most popular American pickup truck nameplates since its birth in 1981. Leading the Ram Truck stable is the Ram 1500, which is the full-size, half-ton model that brawls against rival pickup trucks like the Ford F-150, GMC Sierra 1500, Chevy Silverado 1500, Nissan Titan, and the Toyota Tundra. The Ram 1500 may not be the country's best-selling full-size pickup truck, but it holds its own fairly well in the segment due to its modern design, convincing power output, competitive utility, and its claim to longevity – or by extension, reliability. According to Kelley Blue Book's (KBB) report, reliability is currently the most important factor in a car buyer's purchase journey . Based on an iSeeCars study, the Ram 1500 has one of the greatest potential lifespans among all pickup trucks in America, with a lifetime mileage that can reach over 215,000 miles. For better context, the study also shows that the trusty Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic sedans have a potential lifespan of 204,000 and 205,000 miles, respectively.Vehicle reliability often changes with every model, model year, and generation – and the Ram 1500 is no exception. If you're looking for the best used Ram 1500 for sale today, then this is a great read for you.

We used cross-referenced vehicle reliability, maintenance, recall, and pricing data from J.D. Power , Kelley Blue Book (KBB), Edmunds , RepairPal , CarEdge , Consumer Reports (CR), and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) to give you 5 of the most durable (and 5 of the least dependable) Ram 1500 models released for the past 18 years.

For 2014, the Ram 1500 retired the 4.7-liter gasoline V8 and welcomed the 3.0-liter turbocharged EcoDiesel V6 (240 hp, 420 lb-ft) into the powertrain choices. Popular features such as the RamBox storage system, the multi-mode air suspension system, and the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 (395 hp, 410 lb-ft) still add to the appeal of the 2014 Ram 1500.

2014 Ram 1500 Reliability

The 2014 Ram 1500 received a 78/100 quality and reliability score from JD Power. However, KBB's 3.9/5 expert review rating seems to be more accurate, as the 2014 Ram 1500 received over a dozen recalls and more than a thousand official complaints. Today, a pre-owned 2014 Ram 1500 still sells for $12,618 to $26,897.

  • Average Yearly Maintenance Costs: $676 (RepairPal)
  • Recalls: 17 (NHTSA)
  • Complaints And Reported Problems: 1,096 official complaints, problems with the transmission, airbags, battery harness, radio software, cruise control, crankshaft position sensor, EGR cooler, seat covers, fuel pump, tailgate, and rear shock absorbers

Not So Durable: 2011 Ram 1500

Quality and reliability score: 77/100.

The 2011 Ram 1500 welcomed three new trim levels in the lineup. The 2011 Ram 1500 Tradesman came as a budget-friendly workhorse, while the Outdoorsman trim appeals to campers, fishermen, hunters, and boaters through towing upgrades, off-road tires, a distinct exterior scheme, and a multi-purpose rear bench seat. The 2011 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn comes as a comfort-oriented, upscale variant that doesn't sacrifice power and utility. For 2011, the Ram 1500's engine lineup still had the base 3.7-liter V6 (215 hp, 235 lb-ft), the 4.7-liter V8 (310 hp and 330 lb-ft), and the revered 5.7-liter Hemi V8 (390 hp, 407 lb-ft).

2011 Ram 1500 Reliability

JD Power's surveys gave the 2011 Ram 1500 a 77/100 quality and reliability score, although KBB's consumer reviews tallied up to a decent 4.6/5 average rating. Currently, a used 2011 Ram 1500 has a residual value of $8,003 to $17,811.

  • Average Yearly Maintenance Costs: $752 (RepairPal)
  • Complaints And Reported Problems: 638 official complaints, problems with fuel tank, transmission, rear axle pinion nut, and rear axle bearing

Not So Durable: 2009 Dodge Ram 1500

Quality and reliability score: 76/100.

Dodge gave the Ram 1500 a full redesign for the 2009 model year to start the nameplate's 4th generation. Aside from getting a new exterior style, the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 also came with a new suspension design, a UConnect hard-drive radio and navigation system, an optional Sirius Backseat TV, an available premium surround sound system, and new cargo storage features. The 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 also offered more powerful engine options compared to the previous year: a 3.7-liter V6 (210 hp, 235 lb-ft), a 4.7-liter V8 (310 hp and 330 lb-ft), and a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 (390 hp, 410 lb-ft).

2009 Dodge Ram 1500 Reliability

The 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 earned an "average" 76/100 quality and reliability rating from JD Power, although it also received a good 4.7/5 consumer review score from KBB. As of June 2023, the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500's resale value ranges from $7,227 to $13,707.

Not So Durable: 2019 Ram 1500

Quality and reliability score: 69/100.

The 2019 Ram 1500 is the pioneer model year of the nameplate's 5th generation, and thus it came with several exterior and interior updates. Compared to the previous model year, the 2019 Ram 1500 was lighter, had more 2nd-row space, offered higher towing and payload capacities, and had a new mild-hybrid system. A massive 12-inch touchscreen infotainment unit highlights the 2019 Ram 1500's interior technology upgrades. Upon its launch, the 2019 Ram 1500 only offered 2 engine options: the base 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 (305 hp, 269 lb-ft) and the top-spec 5.7-liter Hemi V8 (395 hp, 410 lb-ft). For 2019, the Ram 1500 temporarily discontinued the 3.0-liter turbodiesel option, but the oil burner eventually made a comeback in the 2020 model year.

2019 Ram 1500 Reliability

JD Power gave the 2019 Ram 1500 a "fair" 69/100 quality and reliability rating, although "fair" is actually too forgiving. KBB consumer reviews, however, resulted in a decent 4.6/5 overall score. The 2019 Ram 1500 is still available on the used car market for $26,576 to $50,689.

Ram Teases What Looks Like the TRX Replacement That'll Debut on April 25

We knew Ram is releasing a new RHO model with a 540-plus-hp twin-turbo straight-six—now we know when it'll be revealed.

ram teaser new rho mode

  • The short video clip shows a covered truck on a trailer, but it's the big tires, lifted ride height, and roll bar that make us confident it's the 2025 Ram 1500 RHO .
  • The video closes with text that reads "You won't want to miss this delivery" and then alludes to a reveal date of April 25.

Ready or not here it comes. Ram appears poised to reveal its six-cylinder-powered replacement for the Hellcat V-8-toting TRX , which went extinct after the 2024 model year . That's based on a short teaser video the truck-centric brand released today, which shows a bulky pickup draped with military-style camouflage on a flat-bed trailer. The 15-second YouTube clip (shown below) also confirms a reveal date of April 25.

The video opens with a Ram 2500 Rebel parked in an empty lot as the camera pans to the right to show its "top-secret package." The scene takes place in a desert-type location, possibly hinting at the mysterious pickup's trophy-truck pedigree. At the beginning, a voice whispers "I hear the storm is coming," and the video closes with text that reads "You won't want to miss this delivery," before cutting to the debut date.

While Ram hasn't officially said the truck in the video is the RHO, we feel incredibly confident that it is based on a couple different factors. For one, we already knew about the 2025 Ram 1500 RHO and how it would essentially replace the TRX. Of course, the big hullabaloo is that it'll do so without the outgoing truck's trademark 702-hp supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V-8. Instead, it'll use a high-output version of the Hurricane twin-turbo 3.0-liter straight-six, which will likely have at least 550 horsepower and 521 pound-feet of torque based on details released about the upcoming 2025 Dodge Charger Sixpack .

2025 ram 1500 rho rendering

When the redesigned 2025 Ram 1500 was announced last fall, brand CEO Tim Kuniskis told Car and Driver the RHO will have the same equipment as the TRX, albeit with a retuned suspension. He also said the RHO's horsepower deficit is the reason it's not called a TRX, and that the nameplate would only return with more power.

The other reason we strongly believe Ram is teasing the new TRX's replacement is simply looking at the shrouded truck's silhouette. From the clearly humungous tires to the lifted ride height to the roll bar that's reminiscent of the one available on the TRX, it all points to one thing: Ram is revealing the RHO on April 25, so get your popcorn ready.

Headshot of Eric Stafford

Eric Stafford’s automobile addiction began before he could walk, and it has fueled his passion to write news, reviews, and more for Car and Driver since 2016. His aspiration growing up was to become a millionaire with a Jay Leno–like car collection. Apparently, getting rich is harder than social-media influencers make it seem, so he avoided financial success entirely to become an automotive journalist and drive new cars for a living. After earning a journalism degree at Central Michigan University and working at a daily newspaper, the years of basically burning money on failed project cars and lemon-flavored jalopies finally paid off when Car and Driver hired him. His garage currently includes a 2010 Acura RDX, a manual '97 Chevy Camaro Z/28, and a '90 Honda CRX Si.
