First Look: 2013 Trek Fuel EX

Profile picture for user bturman

Details about Trek's 2013 line are starting to trickle in. First up is the redesigned Fuel EX, a bike seated right in-between a long-travel trail bike and a lightweight XC rig.

trek fuel ex 4 2013

Major changes include a bump up from 120mm to 130mm of travel front and rear, lower standover, 5mm lower bottom bracket height, and 5mm shorter chainstays - all in the name of making it a little more aggressive and snappy. What surprises us, though, is that they've left the head angle at a relatively steep 68-degrees.

Additional trail worthy upgrades include internal dropper post routing and guides. A removable front derailleur mount and new ISCG05 tabs open the doors to 1x10 if that's the route you'd like to go.

Suspension wise, rather than just bumping the travel up slightly, they've adjusted the frame's leverage ratio for improved pedaling performance. Trek's DRCV technology also finds its way into the new 2013 Fox CTD suspension both front and rear. The DRCV equipped fork is now rider-tunable using two included spacer sets that will make the fork more progressive for aggressive riders.

Fuel EX 9.9 Highlights

  • OCLV Carbon Frame
  • Fox Factory Series Float CTD suspension with Trek's DRCV technology
  • SRAM X0 2x10-speed with Type 2 rear derailleur
  • Avid X0 Trail brakes
  • Weight reduced to 24.5 pounds (claimed)

All told, there are seven Fuel EX models for 2013. They range from the pimped out carbon fiber Fuel EX 9.9 to the budget friendly Fuel EX 5.

Keep an eye out for the rest of Trek's 2013 range in the coming weeks.

Fuel EX 2014 vs newer models?

  • Add to quote

Hi guys, I can get a pretty good deal on a new-ish 2014 Fuel EX. It is an old new stock that has only been ridden for 6 months. The dude just wants to move to a Top Fuel. I have seen the new Fuel EX have gotten great reviews, but are the 2014 still as awesome? I know the new one has the Reactiv shock as well as boost spacing. Being a clyde I would like the added stiffness of boost, but I can't afford a new steed. I have to make a decision soon. I appreciate any help.

trek fuel ex 4 2013

I consider the 2014s were more XC oriented, while the newer models are much more trail geometry. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

More XC in a bad way? I didn't think they tweaked the GEO. Man I need to do more research.

Iirc, 2014/2015 were pretty similar, maybe boost wheels. 2016 geo change to slightly more slack. 2017 geo change again, slightly more slack, knock block head tube. I'm sure there are more changes, but you need to do the research. I wouldn't say 2014s were bad at all, they are just different bikes now with the latest trend of longer and slacker frames. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Boost didn't come until 2016. The 2014 will have a shorter reach, longer stem, steeper head angle, longer chainstays. As said before, a little more cross country oriented. Absolutely still very capable and fun, depending on the price and your budget, it may be the way to go. One thing that is undeniable though is the suspension will be much better on the newer fuel, especially if you were looking at a model with the Reactive suspension. The fox 32 that will be on the 2014 will not be nearly as nice as any fork on the 2017 models.

2014 are more XC oriented. Lack ReAktiv and fit4 dampers and Boost(shorter chainstays). Not a bad bike but like the guy selling his I'd rather have a Top Fuel. 2015 got better dampers all around. 2016 got boost and adjustable geo and is pretty sweet if you lean more towards the XCish side. It climbs as well as the 2014 but more stable on the downs. 2017 is more trail oriented going lower and slacker. Not as good of a climber aas the 2014-2016 models but really make up for it on the downs. But it really depends on which number you're looking at as you need the ex8 or better in the 2015-2016 models to have any advantage over a 2014.

Thanks for some great information guys.

I have the 2014 Ex8 model and love it but I like the idea of the 2017 model being able to switch out to 27.5+ tyres. It's like having two bikes in one. I figure if I get the 2017 Ex8 the colour scheme is similar enough my wife won't even notice.

I'm looking at the Ex 8 29, I'm also pretty noobish when it comes to working on bikes. How big of a pain is it to switch wheels? Is it as simple as swapping them out?

Just know that there's a hidden trail bike in the "XC'ish" 2014/15 models. I added a new ReAktiv shock (found on ebay for less than the cost of a shock service) with an offset bushing, dropper post, 50mm stem, aggressive tires, and had the fork travel increased to 130. This slackened it out some, lowered the BB, and quickened up the steering. It still climbs very well, but now pedals and goes down even better. It really transformed the bike. A 34/pike upfront would definitely help as a bigger guy, though, regardless of model year

trek fuel ex 4 2013

What model is it? I had a '14 Fuel EX8 29. The fork was underwhelming, and the rear shock NEEDED a PUSH volume spacer. I was 205 at the time, and you said you are a Clyde. (Weight or height, or both?) I found on my EX8, the wheels were a little flexy, the fork was flexy and did not feel great, and again, the rear shock needed the spacer to just not blow through travel. I sold it for a 15 Remedy, which solved every issue I had with the Fuel. However, I still have some of my best times on the Fuel, so it's NOT a bad bike...

DethWshBkr, I am a clyde because of weight, 225 lbs. I think I am going to save to get an ex 8 or 9. Or possibly a Tallboy. Both are sold at my LBS

So, the fork is a 2016 Factory Float 32, and most the components are 2016 XT. Still tossing this one around.

With your weight. That fork is gonna Flex. I can Flex them pretty good at 195lbs geared. How good is this deal? $$?

I have a 2015 fuel 29er and i can feel the longer chainstay when i try to get jumpy. The head angle doesnt seem to hold me back on the steeps. I can feel some pedal bob, but its only a 120mm bike so i really dont think it matters much. Also it is an amazing climber

I used to run a 32mm fork on my 2015 model (Revelation RCT3), and as nice as that fork is, I found the limitations on it every ride. Now it has a F34 at 140mm and I'm loving life. I'm ~200lbs so at your weight a 34 is the least you want. The Pike is better in my experience. Running it a more than 120mm also makes it MUCH better for descending with barely any loss of climbing ability.

The 32mm Float, if you are riding technical stuff and using the bike as designed, you will notice flex from the fork, as was said earlier. Being a Factory model, it will at least have a good damper in it, so it may not be too bad. When I upgraded to a Remedy, I even tossed off the Pike and put a Fox 36 on. Love that fork!
