Day Trip from NYC to Philadelphia

Day_Trip_from_New_York_to_Philadelphia

Another worthwhile place to visit that’s close to NYC is Philadelphia. At just an hour and a half by train, it’s close enough that many Philadelphians commute to New York City for work daily. Though they are close, these two cities couldn’t have different ambiances; where New York is mainly made from concrete and is a large city, Philly has more green spaces and gives more of a small-town vibe.

The main draw to this city is its importance in American history, which is evident in many areas of the city – especially the Old City district, which is a small section of the downtown area. Yet, Philadelphia is also home to more than historical landmarks, as you’ll also find exceptional art museums, Chinatown, a primarily Italian neighborhood in South Philly, and lots of gray skyscrapers mixed with industrial warehouses in the downtown section.

Distance: 100 Miles (2 hours by car)

If you decide to take a day trip to Philadelphia, don’t forget to check out these sights:

Things to do in Philadelphia on your day trip from New York

  • Hop over to Lancaster and take a horse-drawn buggy ride through Amish farm country.
  • Visit Independence Hall, where the founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence.
  • Tour the Museum of the American Revolution or the Benjamin Franklin Museum.
  • Walk down Elfreth’s Alley. This road is America’s first residential street, dating back to 1702, and is home to many art galleries, shops, and restaurants today.
  • View the art collections at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts or the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Phoenicia, New York, is a hidden gem located in the beautiful Hudson Valley. This Catskills town is an off-the-beaten-path and home to a collection of natural attractions and acclaimed dining establishments. Located just two and a half hours from New York City, this area has more than enough corners to explore during a day trip.

Between the close proximity to Manhattan and gorgeous scenery, this is a popular area in the summer months. Yet, Phoenicia is a wonderful place to visit any time of the year, as there are always activities such as shopping, dining, and exploring the high peaks of the Catskill Mountains.

Poughkeepsie

Poughkeepsie is known by many as the “Queen City of the Hudson,” as it is located on the banks of the Hudson River in the scenic Hudson Valley. This area was established during the 17th century by Dutch settlers, but today it’s a bustling college town that’s also popular with tourists.

BEACON AND COLD SPRING, NEW YORK

A short jaunt on the Metro North from New York City, these two little towns have become popular in spring, summer, and fall. They're beautiful, with DIA: Beacon the star around which a constellation of eating, drinking, and hotel options have sprung up. Since they're a quick car or train ride apart, you could see both in one day, if you like. Consider steak frites, ice cream by the water, drinks overlooking a rumbling waterfall, and a quaint B&B if you can't bear to leave so quickly.

The Patio Grill at The Roundhouse Restaurant New York City Day Trips

The Patio at The Roundhouse Arrow

This former dye mill ( now hotel ) overlooks Beacon Falls, and boy are they gorgeous, particularly in the spring, summer, and fall from the seasonally open Patio Grill. (Mother Nature did good work on both the lighting and the water feature.) The menu changes all the time, and past hits have included a burger with smoked Gouda, fried shrimp with spicy mayo, and a pretty solid salad. Keep it simple and go for wine or beer on tap; cocktails are ambitious but don’t always hit the mark. This food isn’t going to blow your mind, nor will it break the bank: You’re here for that view.

Dogwood bar beacon NYC New York City

Dogwood Arrow

One of a couple neighborhood bars where you can really feel the chill Beacon vibe, this one is studded with locals hunkered in their booths, or tipping back a few local on-tap drafts. You’ve got 16 taps on draft, solid cocktails but nothing fancy, and wine from California, France, and Italy, for the most part (we’d go with a pint). You're wanting a burger, some wings, jumbo stuffed tater tots, a pint, and some gossip. This place has all of it.

Bannerman Island New York day Trips

Hudson River Expeditions Arrow

This rustic kayak tour outfitter in Cold Spring takes you to the still-beautiful Bannerman Castle , which is in a state of photogenic dishabille . Guides tend to be on the very friendly side, and the folks hosting you at the castle itself are bookish and know their stuff. This late spring to early fall operation is pretty much right on the Hudson, which is perhaps why the folks running the show seem to understand the river itself. You’ll want to book in advance, but if you’re in the neighborhood, feel free to pop by just in case there are openings. They have a Peekskill, NY location, too.

Cold Spring Antiques Center Arrow

Tiny, cluttered, and wonderful, this is one of a clutch of great antiques and vintage shops peppering Main Street. Mix-and-match bakelite flatware (a steal) is packed in right alongside vintage Mister Rogers albums, and a lamp of a white monkey clutching a lightbulb. It’s a hoarder’s fever dream. Remember that half the pleasure of vintage and antique shopping is in The Dig. Spend some time shuffling through old photos, posters and the like, and you might just find a diamond in the rough. (But probably not an actual diamond.)

Storm King Art Center Arrow

Forget what you think you know about tiny, manicured sculpture gardens. Storm King Art Center—simply, Storm King to those fleeing the city to see it—is an extraordinary 500-acre outdoor museum just across the river from Beacon and Cold Spring, complete with works from Alexander Calder, Zhang Huan, and Sol LeWitt. In autumn, it’s hard to say what’s more striking here: the artwork or the scenery. Strap on your best walking shoes and pack a picnic. You’ll want to spend a day exploring here.

Pig Hill Inn Beacon New York City NYC Hotel

Pig Hill Inn Arrow

This 1825-era B&B is adorable, right on Cold Spring's Main Street, and comes with a fabulous breakfast. Rooms have four-poster beds, canopies, and lacy coverlets—all the details are spot-on, right down to the clawfoot tubs. There's a cute little "conservatory" for dining with other guests after a night of sleep, and you can sip wine in front of a wood-burning fire. Of all the older options downtown, this is the best by a longshot.

Image may contain Restaurant Cafe and Shop

Moo Moo's Creamery Arrow

Small and quaint, with all the hallmarks you’ve come to expect of an ice cream shop—barely legible signs denoting ice cream flavors scrawled in every color, cute black-and-white tiled floors, teenage scoopers whose moods vary by the day—this is a great place for a to-go cone. Even New England ice cream snobs should be able to get behind the relatively creamy texture and straightforward flavors proffered here. (Think: coffee chip and chocolate Oreo.) The fanciest, Mexican chocolate, is good and punchy with the requisite cinnamon. The mouthfeel is what matters—buttery, luxe, and creamy, not icy—and Moo Moo’s usually nails it.

CityGuidesDayTripsPlaceholder5.jpg

THE NORTH FORK, LONG ISLAND

Keep driving East and North from New York City. Let the last Burger King and Friendly's drop off in the rearview mirror. Observe as apple orchards, breweries, cows and Canadian geese pop into view. Marvel at how the vineyards seem to stretch right to the horizon. You're in the North Fork, baby. Shuck some oysters, hit the beach, have some wine, and most importantly, slow your roll.

Aldo's GREENPORT NORTH FORK LONG ISLAND New York NYC Restaurant

Aldo's Arrow

Locals have been coming to this cozy café since it opened in 1987 to sip espresso drinks and chat over the day's news. It's such a neighborhood institution, even Starbucks closed after four years when it opened across the street. The coffee runs strong and we’d recommend it in latte or mocha form, to balance its intensity. Chocolate-dipped biscotti—which you can buy to go—croissants, and scones are the things to snack with your drink.

Little Creek Oyster Farm & Market Arrow

This nautical oyster hideout by the docks is tiny, popular, and fun, known for its slogan, “Shuck Your Self.” New Englanders and anyone else who grew up shucking their own oysters will delight that it’s half-price here ($20 versus $36 for a pre-shucked dozen) if you do so. If you don’t know where to start, someone will teach you. Oysters here are divine, since this restaurant is part of a local collective working with dozens of individual farmers and harvesters. If you’re here from The City, the wine prices by the bottle might make you a little weak-kneed. Pull yourself together and order a classic oyster pairing: Muscadet, Champagne, or—yes, it works—chocolatey Oyster Stout from Greenport Brewing.

1943 Pizza Bar GREENPORT NORTH FORK LONG ISLAND New York NYC Restaurant

1943 Pizza Bar Arrow

Intimate and simple, with burnt-orange walls and a wood-fired brick oven, crowds come to clamor over the attractive pizzas they're slinging. Even Ina Garten is a fan of these 14-inch thin-crust pies, with their prettily bubbled crusts. The options vary: You could do a margherita simply dressed with mozzarella, tomato sauce, and basil, or you could order the innovative clams casino (fresh clams, bacon, green peppers, and garlic on a white pie). This place can be a nice change from the hustling, bustling pizzerias of Manhattan .

Image may contain Nature Outdoors Countryside Rural Farm and Vineyard

Croteaux Vineyards Arrow

This is off the beaten path of the vineyards lining the North Fork, and it makes for a nice change of pace, with a wonderful garden and tasting barn, and delicious rosé. Everyone’s got a glass of rosé or bubbly rosé, and most folks will order a flight—they’re cheap by Manhattan standards. We love the selection of rosé sparklers, of which you can order a trio at a time, including the deep, juicy Cabernet Franc sparkler (if they have it). Do know that the bar is a warm-weather operation and will reopen before April.

White Flower Farmhouse

White Flower Farmhouse Arrow

Farmhouse antiques are the specialties at this downtown Southold shop—as far as the eye can see—with home decor, kitchenware, and other finds in the mix. Maybe you need a mirror framed in distressed wood? An antique table? Hand-thrown ceramics or a few yard sale items just purchased in the French countryside? These are the vintage and “vintage-inspired” housewares and linens you dream about. If you're a New Yorker trying like hell to make your Brooklyn home into a tiny little country cottage, this is your place.  We’re not gonna say we’d fight you for the matched sets of Bakelite flatware or the cool blue-and-red vintage sailboat rental signs, but…

Brix Rye GREENPORT NORTH FORK LONG ISLAND New York NYC Restaurant Bar

Brix & Rye Arrow

Cocktail obsessives have one daydream: to find a bar with excellent drinks for about a third of what they’d pay in New York or San Francisco . This is that bar. Order The Last Word if you’ve never had one, a Sazerac, or maybe something made with sherry, a fortified wine that drinks master Evan Bucholz understands how to wield wisely. Use those cocktails to wash down pizza from 1943 Pizza Bar next door. Whether you go for a white pie decked out with clams or a classic margherita, the food here—including some killer wood-fired meatballs—is better than most people expect.

American Beech Hotel

American Beech Hotel Arrow

The design at American Beech fits somewhere between LA , Miami Beach, and Greenport . There are whitewashed suites, an Instagrammable bar, and large plants outside. Somehow, the three styles all come together to make one of the chicest places on the North Fork. There are only 12 rooms at this boutique hotel, so book in advance during peak season. Note that some are located over the bustling restaurant, so if you’re looking for peace and quiet, opt for one of the other rooms located around Stirling Square. This spot is as much about the restaurant and bar as it is the hotel. The roomy restaurant, which is closed during the winter, can accommodate large parties, so if you’re visiting the North Fork for, say, a bachelorette, this is a great choice. The menu hops around from cumin-cured duck wings to spaghetti squash latkes and a smash burger with cheddar.

Eagle's Neck Paddling Arrow

The employees of this kayak outfitter are locals, and they want you to relax—Orient Beach State Park is a national landmark, thanks to its unusual maritime forest and its plethora of great blue herons, egrets, ospreys, and crowned night herons. Guides can point out beautiful vistas, but you could also do that on your own. (Costs are similar whether you take the tour or not.) Outdoorsy types will love seeing how far they can get in two hours, and the lazy dabblers among us will enjoy just how chill kayaking can be.

Shelter Island GREENPORT NORTH FORK LONG ISLAND New York NYC park

North Ferry Company Arrow

This is a daily ferry leaving every 10, 20 or 30 minutes to take you to Shelter Island . You came all the way to Greenport. You want to see more of the water. For $2 each way, this is how you do it. This is the best way to get some beach time in—and truly escape the city—without paying much. Rent or bring a bike; the island is totally easy to get around on one. Then go to the beach with a bottle of something delicious.

Image may contain Bread Food and Croissant

Southold General

This café in the heart of tiny Southold village is the perfect mid-road-trip stop during a visit to the North Fork, no matter the time of day. In the mornings, they make excellent coffee (all the beans are La Colombe), satisfying breakfast sandwiches and A+ pastries. Midday, you can grab a fresh salad, an Italian sandwich or even a basket of fried chicken. And on weekend afternoons evenings, they’re churning out specialty woodfired pizzas. Plus, there’s house-made gelato all day long. If the weather is nice, the patio is a great spot to enjoy your meal.

Image may contain Cutlery Fork Food Food Presentation Plate Berry Fruit Plant Produce Cake Dessert and Pie

Briermere Farms

This farmstand in Riverhead is beloved for its pies. Stop by on your way out to stock the kitchen of your weekend rental—your friends and family will thank you (and ask to stop there again on the way back into the city). Seasonal specialties include apple rhubarb, raspberry cream, cherry and chocolate cream. And why not through a couple of carrot cake cupcakes and a few jars of freshly made jam into the mix?

Orvieto

NORTH ADAMS, MASSACHUSETTS

Mass MoCA is a behemoth hub of the arts for many miles in every direction, playing host to artists as varied and marvelous as David Byrne, Wilco, Xu Bing, and Katharina Grosse. It's definitely a can't-miss, but as you drive here, marveling at the rolling hills and sprawling natural beauty, you'll want to know where to eat and sleep, too. One of our favorite boutique hotels is here, featuring a hot tub where you can sip bourbon under the stars, after a day at the museum. A trip to this part of the world is like hitting a reset button.

Mass MOCA Day trips New York New York City NYC North Adams MA

MASS MoCA Arrow

This sprawling museum lures history buffs and art fans alike. The 16-acre complex of 19th-century mill buildings occupies almost a third of the North Adams downtown business region. It is a mind-bending museum. James Turrell, Xu Bing, and Katharina Grosse are among the artists who revel in just how much space is here. The curation is smart, using the gargantuan ceilings and old trappings of the place to make you feel dwarfed, but not diminished. When you need a break, there is a brewpub here, a good café, ice cream, and a fine dining restaurant.

This image may contain Building Housing Roof House Porch and Cottage

The Porches Inn at MASS MoCA Arrow

A string of 19th century Victorian row houses, lined by porches with slightly ominous identical rocking chairs. This place is dwarfed by Mass MoCA just across the street, but you notice the hotel owner’s attention to detail as soon as you park and see the lobby. The tub in your room will be so gorgeous you’ll want to pull it from the floorboards and take it home. And if you miss out on the hot tub, at night, under the stars and foliage, with a bourbon, neat, in your hand (they’re fine with that at the front desk), you are not doing it right. So long as you're not a diva needing to count threads in the sheets, Porches' style and attention to detail may just ruin you for other boutique hotels.

Cascade Waterfall Arrow

At the end of this hike is a picturesque, cold waterfall. The air is crisp and clean here, and it feels a bit like you fell off the map, in the best way. Relatively easy for beginning hikers, sometimes with a bit of mud at the end of the trail, this is a slightly tricky-to-find spot with unfortunately few easements. But if you don't mind muddying your boots a bit, and just want to stretch your legs without going all out, this one's for you.

Pedrin's Dairy Bar Arrow

The words on the awning say it all: “Pedrin’s Dairy Bar: Home of the Fish Fry.” Brace for MASS MoCA tourists and locals wishing they lived a little closer to the beach, all happily digging into sundaes and deeply fried fish ‘n chips. This is a quick fix for a few New England greats, all to be spread out over a white or red picnic table and—as they say—housed. Fried fish, clam strips, cheap burgers, and bountiful ice cream: This isn’t a place you walk away from feeling light on your feet, but some of us like to get all our indulgences in at one go.

Williams College Museum o fArt

Williams College Museum of Art Arrow

Dedicated art lovers know that there’s more to see in this corner of the Berkshires than the large-scale installations at MASS MoCA . Just down the road sits William College Museum of Art, or WCMA, a small but mighty museum that’s home to 15,000 pieces that range from ancient Egyptian and Assyrian to works from living American artists. The collection here has a bit of everything. There are outdoor sculptures, an archive dedicated to brothers Maurice and Charles Prendergast, and pieces from contemporary artists. Students at Williams College are lucky enough to be able to loan select pieces from the collection for a semester.

Tourists North Adams

Tourists Arrow

Inspired by the American roadside motor lodge of yore, Tourists is built for contemporary design lovers with lots of light wood on the banks of the Hoosic River. Many of the large windows in guest rooms look straight into nature, helping blur the line between the outdoors and indoors. Opened in 2018, Tourists still feels like the cool new kid on the block with the clientele to match. For those exploring Williamstown and North Adams, Tourists is perfectly situated. It’s approximately three miles from the Clark Art Institute, MASS MoCA , and Bright Ideas Brewing . If you’re visiting this corner of the Berkshires, there’s nowhere more stylish to stay.

The Distillery at Greylock WORKS Arrow

The historic Greylock Works mill has been converted into a stylish home for this distillery from Colorado that relocated to the Berkshires and opened here in 2019. Inside the distilling room sits a 20 person bar that makes drinks exclusively from housemade liquors and is open on Friday and Saturday evenings—perfect for folks visiting from out of town. Take a bottle for your friends back home and know that for each bottle you buy, you’ll get a complimentary cocktail or flight.

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA

The City of Brotherly Love has been luring lovers of art and dining from NYC and Washington, D.C., in recent years, and can compete on the national level on both fronts. With arguably the best Israeli cuisine in America, a trio of knockout museums, and even a Four Seasons, it's a destination town. Here's where to sleep, drink, eat, and play in Philly right now.

Zahav Restaurant Philadelphia

Zahav Arrow

When James Beard Award-winning chef Michael Solomonov opened Zahav over a decade ago, it was one of only a handful of Israeli restaurants in the U.S. that served dishes other than hummus and shakshuka. Since then, upscale Israeli restaurants have sprouted in major cities across the country, and Americans have learned how to say "tehina." But despite the competition it's created, Zahav remains one of the best (if not the very best). Every meal here should start with Solomonov's silken hummus and laffa, a just-barely singed Iraqi flat bread, and salatim, a selection of Israeli salads and dips you can plunge that laffa into. From there, there's no wrong turn: Choose plates like chicken shishlik with plum, fennel, and sumac, or black sea bass tartare with bulgur and preserved orange. And save room for the restaurant’s iconic pomegranate-glazed lamb shoulder.

If you can’t score a table at Zahav, try Laser Wolf, which serves several salatim (Middle Eastern salads) and skewers like Yemenite beef kebabs and mushroom shishlik, which are kissed with charcoal.

United States Pennsylvania Philadelphia Market Reading Terminal Market

Reading Terminal Market Arrow

All of humanity seems to have come together in a happy hubbub at Reading Terminal Market. The sprawling space has been around since 1893, though now, its vegetable, fish, and meat vendors are compounded by dozens of restaurants, bakeries, and bars. Look for old-timey neon signs to help you make sense of the dozens of options—or just head straight for DiNic's, where the roast pork sandwich, topped with a frenzy of broccoli rabe, is practically the beating heart of the place. Follow it up with a scoop (or three) of Bassett's silky ice cream.

Philadelphia Museum of Art

Philadelphia Museum of Art Arrow

Classic, grand, and impressive, the Philadelphia Museum of Art is a cultural institution. It is Philadelphia's answer to the Louvre, and houses one of the country's finest collections of art and sculpture. Tourists, locals, the stroller set…the gang's all here and they're all taking in the art at their own pace. Some skip entire galleries based on interests, while others read every placard. It's a choose your own adventure kind of place. And if all of this culture makes you hungry, you're in luck. The Cafe is bright and welcoming and features a variety of tasty sandwiches, soups, pizzas, and more. Prefer to cool your heels in a more formal setting? The Stir is an elegant spot designed by Frank Gehry that's perfect for lingering and lunching.

Briar Vintage Philadelphia

Briar Vintage Arrow

Vintage for gentlemen! This extraordinary place, open to the public every third Saturday of the month, is one of a bevy of great vintage shops sprinkled around Philly, though it has some of the best men’s gear. Silk ascots, waistcoats, bowties, jackets, and an attentive owner who knows your size on site? It’s like stepping into a Gary Cooper vehicle. Don't leave without a smart vintage watch and, if you're feeling especially adventurous, a full tuxedo with tails.

Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia at Comcast Center

Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia at Comcast Center Arrow

This is a Four Seasons, so you can expect seamless service and a lot of greige carpeting. However, this particular outpost is somewhat unique in that so many big names were tapped for its creation: floral designer Jeff Leatham, composer Brian Eno, architect Norman Foster, and chefs Jean-Georges Vongerichten and Greg Vernick. Their contributions along with expansive skyline views from every vantage point on the property and passionate, genuine service could make this the beginning of a transformation of Philadelphia's hotel scene .

La Colombe Fishtown Philadelphia

La Colombe Arrow

La Colombe’s Fishtown location is unlike any of its many other outposts. The sprawling space is home to a roastery, a coffee laboratory, an open kitchen, a shop, and lots of seating. To call it a coffee shop would be to miss the point. There are fresh baked goods and other cafe standards aplenty here, but you’re really here for the coffee like pour overs, nitro lattes, and of course all of the espresso standards perfectly prepared. For coffee nerds or those with coffee lovers at home, there’s also a shop where you can pick up bags of La Colombe’s coffee to take home. Curious diners should consider stopping in for coffee and heading over to nearby Suraya for a Lebanese brunch.

United States Pennsylvania Philadelphia Restaurant Jim's South Street

Jim's South Street Arrow

Most cheesesteak shops in Philadelphia focus so closely on the rolls, onions, steak, and wiz, not to mention claiming the title of the best cheesesteak in the city, that a comfortable place in which to eat the sandwich is often overlooked. The team at Jim’s, which has been making cheesesteaks in Philly for almost 80 years, thankfully doesn't fall into that camp. Located on the corner of Fourth and South Streets, you can typically spot Jim’s before you arrive from the line snaking outside, down Fourth Street towards tattoo shops and piercing parlors. Once you’re inside, split up your team. While one person waits in line to place orders for cheesesteaks "wit whiz" (Cheese Whiz, that is), provolone, or American, or an Italian hoagie, the rest of the crew can head upstairs to stake out a table. It’s a bit of a production, but well worth it for a cheesesteak that never disappoints—and a place that lets you enjoy.

United States Pennsylvania Philadelphia Museum Independence National Historic Park

Independence National Historic Park Arrow

Philadelphia is the only UNESCO World Heritage City in the United States precisely because of the historical events that transpired right here, and it’s not just one museum or historic landmark. Rather, it’s a collection of buildings that played host to events that shaped American independence or honor that hard-won heritage. Begin at the Visitor Center to get your bearings and start your tour—visitors can enter with timed entry tickets—at Independence Hall, then stop by the Liberty Bell Center for a look at ostensibly the most famous broken item in the world. Afterwards, wander past the park’s other historic buildings including Carpenters Hall, the meeting site of the first Continental Congress, then make your way to the Benjamin Franklin Museum. Just note the airport-style security (and subsequent foot traffic) you're bound to encounter, and make sure you wear comfortable shoes—you'll be doing a lot of walking.

CityGuidesDayTripsPlaceholder4.jpg

THE HAMPTONS, LONG ISLAND

This varied stretch of towns and hamlets along the south fork of Long Island’s east end is famous on so many fronts: as a tony playground for celebrities and the Manhattan elite, but also for its earthier roots—lush farms, beaches, and quaint villages. Do as the locals do, and hit the bakeries, sandwich spots, farm stands, and under-the-radar museums and galleries that really make it stand out. Then, you'll understand why the crowds beeline for spots like Southampton, East Hampton and Montauk as soon as the weekend hits.

Carissa's THE HAMPTONS NY New York City day Trip Bakery Restaurant

Carissa's The Bakery Arrow

The most Williamsburg-ified place in the Hamptons, Carissa’s started as a tiny walk-in-closet-sized space but has graduated and expanded to a second, larger two-building space on Pantigo Road. At the new location, the house is still stocked with artful pastries that would impress at that dinner party your Hamptons host is throwing. But, there’s also a more fleshed out café menu and dinner offerings like fried Montauk monkfish and spaghetti al limone. You can (and should) still load up sourdough and pie though.

PollockKrasner House and Study Center

Pollock-Krasner House Arrow

This 19th-century shingle-style farmhouse in the Springs was home to the abstract expressionist painter Jackson Pollock and his wife, Lee Krasner, until the late '80s. It's been left pretty much intact: the shelves are filled with books, Krasner's necklaces still hang on hooks in the bedroom, and, most fascinatingly, the drips from Pollock's most famous paintings still cover the wooden floor in his studio. It's a seasonal site, open May through October.

Round Swamp Farm Hamptons

Round Swamp Farm Arrow

The Hamptons are filled with "farm stands" that are really specialty food boutiques. This is one of them, and it's the absolute best. Fresh peaches, white corn, and blackberries from local farms, eggs from the neighboring Iacono chicken coop, and tasty prepared salads and pasta, but the real draw are the baked goods: lemon pound cake, mini chocolate chip cookies, and crumble-topped pies oozing with fruit. There aren't any prices on anything. You'll wince when they start ringing you up at the register, but the baked goods and fresh produce are as good as the people-watching.

New York City Hampton Chutney Co.

Hampton Chutney Co. Arrow

A counter service Indian-ish café, it's known for its massive, delicious dosas served on big plastic lunch trays and filled with grilled curried chicken, jack cheese, fresh veggies and plenty of avocado. Skip the sandwiches. You're here for the crispy, light-as-air, longer-than-your-arm dosas that you'll think are too big for one person to finish alone (you'll be wrong). One bite and you'll wonder why every order isn't served on this crepe-like wonder. The breakfast dosa is a Sunday morning home run, and the curry chutney chicken is like a chicken salad sandwich that just came back from a semester abroad in New Delhi. Everything comes with your choice of chutney for dipping and spreading—they're all tasty, but you can't go wrong with the herby cilantro.

Bridgehampton Candy Kitchen Arrow

On-the-nose classic 1950's luncheonette. There's a striped awning and neon lettering out front, leather-covered stools at the counter, booths lining the wall, paper menus-slash-placemats. They're known for their homemade ice cream: the flavors are listed on a board above the counter, where waitresses have been blending milkshakes in old-school machines for years, and there's a case where you can buy gallon containers of the stuff by the door. Stick to the classics and don't pass up a milkshake or malt.

THE HAMPTONS NY Tacos NYC Day Trip Restaurant

La Fondita Arrow

It's a seasonally-open taco shack (albeit one brought to you by the restaurateurs behind the chic Nick and Toni's ) off the highway in Amagansett, with reggaeton on the stereo, technicolor picnic tables on the grass outside, and guacamole served in little plastic tubs. There's a full menu of tortas, burrito bowls, salads, and tostadas, but tacos are the way to go. Get some chips and guac to start, then a few Baja-style fish tacos, chicken tingas, and al pastors. Wash it down with Jarritos or a Modelo.

Hither Hills State Park

Hither Hills State Park Arrow

Hither Hills is a network of trails that stretches across the narrow Montauk peninsula from the Long Island Sound to the Atlantic. Parts of it are heavily forested, best for mountain bikers or trail runners looking to get their miles in; the rest are open sand dunes that stretch onto a skinny, quiet beach on the sound, perfect for an adventurous walk or a picnic. Don't miss the Walking Dunes trail for its dramatic sandy bowls. In all, it's a respite from the rest of the Hamptons and a cool, totally unspoiled landscape to explore.

Baron's Cove Arrow

Baron’s Cove leans into the Hamptons lifestyle hard. If you don’t want to drop several million on a mansion, Baron’s Cove will give you a taste for the weekend. Located right along Sag Harbor cove, there’s a salt water pool in the summer, lounge chairs aplenty by said pool, and a preppy interior that looks like Ralph Lauren gave the decorator some tips. Guests can opt for a room that looks out onto the garden or the water. No matter where you stay, there will be nods to nautical design. With a full restaurant that services both guests and other visitors to Sag Harbor, you’ll never have to travel far for a meal here. But, this is the Hamptons, so prepare to shell out $25 for a breakfast sandwich or $26 for a lobster omelet at brunch. At dinner, opt for seafood options like the local catch of the day and a lobster caesar.

Parrish Art Museum

Parrish Art Museum Arrow

Driving down Route 27, you'll see what looks like a hyper-elongated modernist barn in an open field with two giant Roy Lichtenstein sculptures out front. This Herzog and de Meuron designed building is home to more than 2,600 works of art, many of them made by artists who lived and worked on the East End during their lifetimes, including Lichtenstein, Fairfield Porter, Willem de Kooning, and Dan Flavin. It's usually an older, quieter crowd—people are here to see the architecture and spend some time contemplating the art in the galleries. It never gets too crowded, unless it's a rainy day on a summer weekend.

KINGSTON, NEW YORK

This little city on the Catskills side of the Hudson River is in the midst of a transformation from scruffy underdog to bustling culture hub. From the charming vintage shops, secondhand bookstores and diners in the Stockade District to the chic homewares stores and wine bars in the waterfront Rondout area, it represents the full range of Upstate New York vibes—meaning there’s something for everyone.

Rosie General

The stretch of Broadway that leads down to the Rondout Creek is home to a fabulous array of shopping opportunities. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head into Rosie General, a cozy but elevated take on the classic small-town General Store. At the front of the shop, they stock an incredible trove of local treats, from fresh farm produce to pickled veggies, artisanal salts and handmade sauces. In the back, there’s a counter serving freshly baked pastries, top-notch sandwiches (a recent spring visit featured a quickly devoured croque madame with ramps), and coffees. It’s the kind of spot you’ll want to linger in for a while—grab a seat by the window for the best people watching.

Clove & Creek

This is one of those home goods stores that makes you want to replace everything you own with the chic, handcrafted version of it that they carry. Everything in this abundantly stocked, sunlit boutique is just so elegant and thoughtful: a ceramic onion keeper from France, a trio of cheese knives with faux-horn handles, palo santo incense from Tibet, a candle shaped like a bundle of asparagus. If you’re ever in need of a unique hostess, housewarming or wedding present, this is a must.

Lovefield Vintage

This cheerful vintage store in the Stockade District hits the rare sweet spot of well curated and well priced—while you’re not finding crazy Goodwill deals here, you won’t feel gouged either. And everything feels cared for, considered, and clean. Think sweet embroidered 1950s sun dresses, funky printed men’s shirts from the ’80s, and kooky contemporary accessories and jewelry for a bit of extra fun. Once you’ve picked out your treasures, walk down the street to Half Moon Books for more secondhand hunting.

Image may contain Burger Food Cup and Fries

Perched on a roundabout just by the I-87 ramp, this nouveau drive through is perfectly positioned to fuel your drive back to the city or up into the Catskills. The tightly edited menu features the three classics: burgers, fries, and milkshakes. The secret? Everything is meatless (there is dairy.) The burgers are made with Impossible patties and the shakes are spun with Oatly—but don’t worry, you won’t miss a thing. Everything is decadent, delicious and somehow even more satisfying.

Brunette Arrow

On any given night, this bright, charming wine bar in the Rondout has at least 14 wines by the glass on offer, from skin contact Mtvane from Kakheti, Georgia to more traditional sips like Chenin Blanc from the Loire Valley. If you’re new to natural wines, don’t be shy about asking questions—they’d be happy to help you dive into their ever-changing array of natural-leaning bottles sourced from around the world—or walk you through their selection of cider, locally made sake, sherry, and beer. Standouts from the food menu include trout roe nachos, house-made pork-duck-fig paté, and a hearty kale caesar with savory granola and garlicky breadcrumbs. Happen to be in the neighborhood before you’re ready for cocktail hour? Area Coffee Co. operates out of their space Thursdays-Sundays.

HUDSON, NEW YORK

Hudson , a small city perched above the east side of the Hudson River, has come to represent everything people love about “Upstate”: bucolic vistas, artisanal shops run by local creatives, charming 19th Century architecture and an elegantly laid-back vibe. Over the past decade, it’s been transformed from a sleepy town beloved by antique hunters to a stylish escape for city dwellers of all stripes, complete with design-centric hotels, sleek boutiques, and a thriving bar and restaurant scene that attracts foodies from all over the region. And you don’t even need a car to get there—you can take the Metro North from Manhattan and easily explore the scene of Warren Street on foot.

Talbott & Arding

This is where you’ll build the charcuterie board of your dreams—whether you’re consuming it in the Airbnb you rented for the weekend or on the train back to the city. Yes, they make fabulous (and expensive) sandwiches and prepared foods that are perfect for an elevated picnic lunch, but the real draw here is the incredible cheeses, crackers, jams, and cured meats that you’ll want to enjoy with a crisp local beer. It’s also just so airy and elegant inside, all the better to display the specialty pantry essentials you’ll be tempted to take home with you, from linen tea towels to basil vinegar. Perhaps the bougiest thing they carry: a S’mores Kit featuring Bourbon flavored dark milk chocolate, and housemade marshmallows graham crackers.

Les Indiennes

Tucked among the many vintage and antique stores along Warren Street, this home goods store features hand block printed pillows, bedding, curtains and tablewares in gorgeous natural hues. Whether you’re decorating a whole house or just looking to add a bit of pizzazz to your bathroom in the form of an all-over floral print, this is a lovely place to visit and get inspiration—their napkin sets also make for a really nice gift.

Imagine if REI and the most stylish designer boutique you’ve ever seen got married and had a baby. That baby would be Westerlind. They stock a somehow perfect mix of outdoor apparel (merino wool base layers, hiking boots, water bottles) and upscale-but-low-key clothing (colorful cashmere sweaters, Italian wool trousers, oversized cotton oxford shirts) that perfectly encapsulates the aspirational Hudson aesthetic. The little things in the mix are just as thoughtfully curated: Kinto tumblers to keep your coffee hot on a hike, fuzzy socks for lounging by the fire, and cool baseball caps to protect you from the sun.

Backbar Arrow

Is this a bar? A vintage shop? A restaurant? Backbar looks a bit like all three. But, at its core, it’s a bar with food worth getting in a car for. Zak Pelaccio, who once operated Fatty Crab in Manhattan , and later decamped to the Hudson Valley, is behind the project. It's geared towards locals but will allow those visiting for the weekend to join in. Pull up a seat at the bar or in the large outside space if the weather’s nice. With a name like Backbar, it’s fair to expect high level drinks. That expectation is certainly met with simple but well executed cocktails like the Bee’s Knees with Citadelle Gin, honey, and lemon, and slushies like the Lucy, made with tequila, fresh lime juice, and topped with Prosecco. There’s also a board for local beer offerings and cocktail specials. If you're in Hudson, you really shouldn't miss Backbar, regardless of whether you're with your partner, parents, or friends.

3. Finger Lakes, New York

4. Alexandria, Virginia

Nicholas Schmidt/Travel + Leisure

Venturing to Old Town Alexandria will help you feel a world away from the bustle of NYC. Architecture enthusiasts will love Old Town's 18th- and 19th-century facades, while the shopping-inclined traveler will enjoy patronizing the inviting local businesses. Right on the Potomac, Alexandria is one of our favorite southern U.S. cities — right up there with Savannah and Charleston — but it's only four hours from NYC by car.

5. Catskills, New York

Cooperstown is a four-hour drive from NYC through the scenic Catskill Mountains. Stay close to Otsego Lake at The Inn at Cooperstown ; built in 1874, the historic, award-winning hotel is home to 18 beautiful guest rooms. From Cooperstown, it's a short ride to the north end of the lake and Glimmerglass State Park , a perfect spot for out-of-town visitors to explore.

Meanwhile, the charming Catskills town of Roxbury is a quick, three-hour drive from NYC. Stay at The Roxbury at Stratton Falls , a lovely boutique hotel with eclectic decor. If you love to stargaze, book the astronomy-focused Galileo's Gate cottage with its own glass-ceiling observation deck.

6. Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania

The Pocono Mountains are an easy getaway from New York City, just under two hours away. For those who want a full nature immersion, consider a stay at Cranberry Run Campground . It's surrounded by 65 acres of woodlands, and campers can hang out at the on-site outdoor pool or explore the nearby Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area for hiking, canoeing, kayaking, and rafting.

7. Lexington, Massachusetts

Situated approximately 15 miles from Boston in bucolic woodlands, Lexington is the perfect destination for American history buffs. Stay at the stunning 22-room Inn at Hastings Park , a Relais & Châteaux property that's centrally located to Walden Pond, Battle Green (where the first shots of the Revolutionary War were fired), the Hancock-Clarke House, and the Orchard House (where "Little Women" was set). You can reach this town in less than four hours from NYC.

8. Niagara Falls, New York

It'll take seven hours from NYC, but if you trek 400 miles north of the city, you'll make it to Niagara Falls, New York. The trip itself is exceptionally scenic, with plenty of opportunity for hiking or picnic lunches along the way. Once you arrive at Niagara Falls State Park , you'll be overwhelmed by the rainbows, mist, and thunderous roar generated by the American, Horseshoe, and Bridal Veil Falls.

9. Newport, Rhode Island

Only a four-hour drive from NYC, Newport is a must-visit for all East Coast road trippers. This summer, stay at The Vanderbilt for a taste of opulence. With 33 rooms located in the authentic former mansion of a real Vanderbilt, the property was recently renovated and offers unique experiences, like a wine tasting paired with a vinyl listening session on a vintage gramophone and tea leaf reading sessions with a professional psychic.

10. Haines Falls, New York

The Catskills are so nice that they made the list twice. With majestic waterfalls, unique towns, and beautiful scenery, the region offers incredible outdoor experiences. The hamlet of Haines Falls, in the Great Northern Catskills , is home to the highest cascading waterfall in New York state, Kaaterskill Falls . The trail, which is open year-round, is about a mile and a half round-trip. Road trippers should also head to Round Top to see Glen Falls, which doubles as a popular swimming hole during the warmer months.

11. The Berkshires, Massachusetts

Drive three hours from NYC, and you'll wind up in the stunning Berkshires in western Massachusetts. While visiting, grab iced coffees and croissants from Six Depot Roastery & Cafe and picnic along Shaker Mill Pond. For a quintessentially charming New England stay, check out The Old Inn on the Green .

12. North Fork, New York

Head out to the North Fork of Long Island, which has great dining and wineries, but is still quieter than the buzzing Hampton towns on the South Fork. On your way to the North Fork from NYC, stop off at Jerry & the Mermaid for lunch. Your first winery in North Fork should be Bedell Cellars . And when you're driving back to the city, if the season is right, take a detour to see the lavender fields at Lavender by the Bay .

13. Keene Valley, Adirondacks, New York

The Adirondacks are worth visiting in any season. Keene is well-situated in the highest peaks of the Adirondacks, offering great downhill and cross-country skiing in the winter, and hiking in the summer (we recommend taking the Giant Mountain trail at the base of Roaring Brook Falls). For a lovely bed-and-breakfast, check out the Keene Valley Lodge .

The Best Day Trips from NYC

East of the city.

As you head east past Queens and Brooklyn to Long Island, you’ll notice the streets get a little wider, the houses bigger, and the atmosphere gets more and more laid back. (Spoiler alert: All three boroughs are technically part of the Long Island landmass!) A trip to Long Island is one of the easiest day trips to make from the city and you can be there and back before dinner. Don’t forget: if you are staying in Queens or Brooklyn, it may not make sense for you to get on the train at Penn Station and there is likely to be another train station much closer to your accommodation.

1. The Beaches of Long Island

During the summer, many New Yorkers head out to the beaches of Long Island. Nestled along the Atlantic Ocean complete with golden sand, rolling dunes, and clear water, the beaches give a welcome respite to the scorching NYC summer heat. Better known as The Hamptons, these beaches are popular with high society (a la Gossip Girl ), but they are easy to get to for “normal” people on a day trip from NYC. While you may not be staying at one of the (in)famous beach houses, you will get a chance to check out some surprisingly nice beaches.

Some of the most popular beaches include the Main Beach in East Hampton, where you may be lucky enough to see a celebrity, which is just a 25-minute walk away from the East Hampton train station or you can hop on the free shuttle that runs between the town and the beach. As you can imagine, it can get incredibly crowded during the weekends as New Yorkers celebrate the weekend with a little fun in the sun so if you want a more relaxed beach experience, try to come during the week (and avoid Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekends).

The other popular choice is Coopers Beach in Southampton. Like East Hampton, it is easy to catch the Long Island Railroad to Southampton and from there, it is just a quick 10-minute taxi ride. If you make some friends on the train, you may even find someone you can share the ride with.

Long Island Railroad trains depart from Penn Station on the corner of 34th St between 7th and 8th Avenue.

Pro Tip: If you don’t want to shell out the dough for the Long Island Railroad or simply don’t have enough time to make it out there, you can still visit a beach for only the price of the Metro fare. Many people don’t realize that there are beaches in New York City’s outer boroughs as well. The most well-known of these is Coney Island but just a bit east of it, you can also find Brighton Beach which is a bit more laid back and has a large Russian-speaking population living there.

2. Fire Island

Fire Island is a large barrier island off the coast of Long Island lined with beautiful, pristine beaches and more than 100 miles of coastline. No cars are allowed on the island making it a sharp contrast to the bustling streets of Manhattan and while you are there, you have the chance to reconnect with Mother Nature a bit thanks to the myriad of hiking, biking, kayaking, and boating opportunities. You can even try surfing while you are there!

Despite its relative remoteness, Fire Island is surprisingly easy to get to. You simply need to hop on the Long Island Railroad from Penn Station to Bayshore, Sayville, or Patchogue where you can board ferries that take you to different parts of the island. There are a handful of accommodation options located in some of the island’s small towns of Ocean Beach, Ocean Bay Park, Cherry Grove, and Fire Island Pines, but be sure to book well in advance if you plan on staying overnight during the summer as rooms can fill up very quickly!

3. North Fork

Located at the far northeastern end of Long Island, you will find the North Fork. This 30-mile long peninsula is loaded with wineries where you can sample the “goods” at a wine tasting and bucolic farms where you can pick up fresh produce straight from the source. Greenport, the largest town, features a 19th-century main street dotted with independent shops and locally-owned restaurants where you can easily spend a full day strolling up and down the street trying out the many delicious eateries.

Getting to North Fork without a car is a little trickier than some of the other places on this list but you can take the Long Island Railroad there and then may want to look at renting a car or taking taxis to get to the area’s numerous vineyards and farms. Alternatively, you can get the Hampton Jitney bus from different pick-up points in Manhattan. The journey should take around three hours and make sure to book online in advance as it could help you save money and secure you a seat on a busy day!

Heading North of NYC

When you begin heading north out of New York City, you will enter the stunning Hudson River Valley. As the train plies its way further and further north, the tall buildings of the city are replaced by charming towns and rolling hills. It is well worth taking a day trip just to see the gorgeous scenery but there is also plenty of great things to see!

4. Hudson River Valley

Throughout Manhattan, you will see advertisements for cruises along the Hudson River but you may be wondering where exactly you go. Although it is probably most well known for being one of the rivers that make the island of Manhattan … well … an island, it also happens to be an incredibly important waterway flowing 300 miles up through New York State all the way to the state capital of Albany. While there are plenty of boats that just go around the southern stretch of Manhattan, if you really want to explore this important waterway, you should hop on a train for a day of unbridled exploration!

Sleepy Hollow

One of the first great stops as you head north on the train past the Bronx and then Yonkers is the town of Sleepy Hollow, the setting of Washington Irving’s famous book about the headless horseman and what claims to be one of the most haunted cities in the world. Irving grew up in the nearby town of Tarrytown (another great spot to check out along the Hudson River) and is buried in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery along with many other distinguished people. Located right along the Hudson River, Sleepy Hollow has a lovely historic downtown and was once one of the many residences of the Rockefeller family who lived in the Kykuit Estate, a grandiose stone mansion dripping with ivy set amongst perfectly groomed grounds. Although the estate is still owned by the Rockefellers, it now operates as a museum that is open to the public.

Bear Mountain

Just a little past Sleepy Hollow and across the river, you will find Bear Mountain State Park where you can go hiking, biking, or boating. The area is absolutely beautiful with a handful of rugged mountains, and rolling hills covered in emerald green grass and thick forests. In the fall, you can even hop on a fall foliage tour. If you want to stay overnight, you can book a room at the 1915 Bear Mountain Inn.

New Windsor

Just north of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, you will also find the Storm King Art Center . This open-air museum is located near New Windsor and has one of the largest collections of contemporary art sculptures in the United States. While a visit to the art center can easily be combined with a trip to Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, keep in mind that the park stretches close to 500 acres, and it will take around two to three hours to see everything. Tickets also tend to sell out in advance so make sure you book them early to avoid any disappointment.

Cold Spring

Directly across the Hudson River from the Storm King Art Center (on the same side as Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow), you will find the village of Cold Spring. Founded in the 18th century, Cold Spring’s historic downtown offers a wide array of high-end restaurants and boutiques and the town is considered to be one of the most affluent areas along the Hudson River. Just a little bit up the river from Cold Spring, you can even visit a “Scottish” castle on an island in the middle of the river. If you are feeling adventurous and energetic, you can also head out on the Breakneck Ridge Loop Trail. This trail isn’t for the faint of heart—unless you love steep ledges and steep climbs—as this is considered one of the most difficult hikes in the Hudson Valley.

You can then stop to see New Paltz’s Historic Huguenot Street , which is one of America’s National Historic Landmark District, to learn more about the Huguenots that settled here in the late 17th century, The district features seven historic house museums as well as a reconstructed early 19th-century church covering 300 years of history. There is also an imposing stone archway known as the Testimonial Gateway nearby that was built as the main entrance to the sprawling, early 20th century Mohonk Mountain House. New Paltz lies in the eastern section of the Catskills and serves as a great base to explore the mountains.

As you keep going north, you will find the former homes of some of America’s most distinguished families. Architecture lovers will be dazzled by the Olana State Historic Site which was once home to the famous painter Frederic Edwin Church and features unique Persian-style elements and exquisite grounds and the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site , a 54 room Beaux-Arts palace that was once owned by one of America’s wealthiest families. Both can be visited on guided tours where you will learn more about these architectural marvels and the families that lived there.

Just a five-minute drive from the Vanderbilt Mansion, you can also check out the home of Franklin D. Roosevelt , arguably one of the most important US presidents of the 20th century. The estate features a historic federal-style home that was the birthplace, lifelong home, and burial ground of FDR. Many of the most important people of the 1930s and 1940s stayed there including Queen Elizabeth and Winston Churchill.

One of the best things about the area is that much of it is accessible via the Metro-North Railroad which has trains departing from the spectacular Grand Central Station in Midtown East on 42nd St and Park Avenue. The train ride along the Hudson River is very beautiful which makes this day trip even more special!

5. Albany, New York

As the capital of New York, Albany has a ton of interesting things to offer visitors including the over-the-top New York State Capitol Building that looks like it should be gracing one of the main squares of a European city. Inside, you will find a unique interior with dashes of Moorish design. You can visit the Capitol as part of an hour-long guided tour. If the weather is nice, you can also take a stroll in Washington Park which was created by the famous landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead of Central Park fame.

Albany also has a number of great museums that are well worth popping into in addition to some fascinating buildings linked with the Underground Railroad that was used to help enslaved people escape to freedom.

Albany is around a two-and-a-half-hour drive from New York City or you can take the Amtrak train there from Penn Station. The train ride should take around the same amount of time as driving We highly recommend taking the train or planning on staying overnight over driving there as a day trip because not only are there some great things to do in Albany but they also have a thriving craft beverage scene complete with microbreweries, meaderies, wineries, and cideries.

6. The Catskills

Located in Upstate New York, the Catskill Mountains are another great destination for a day trip or overnight stay. The region has pretty much everything you can ask for—gorgeous scenery, large, welcoming towns, quaint villages that time seems to have forgotten, endless hiking trails, exhilarating zip lines, and tranquil campgrounds. One of the most famous places for outdoor activities in the Catskills is Minnewaska State Park Reserve. This is a popular spot for swimming, fishing, and hiking along one of the 30 trails and features three crystal clear mountain lakes where you can cool off a bit on a hot summer day.

There are also some unique attractions there. You can even check out the world’s largest kaleidoscope which stands a whopping 56 feet tall there. Foodies will love indulging in the tiny town of Bovina (population 633) where you can find a surprising array of top-notch restaurants specializing in farm-to-table cuisine right in the middle of cow country. The Catskills were also the setting for the 1980s classic Dirty Dancing and although many of the resorts that once made up the “Borscht Belt” have now fallen into disrepair, it is fascinating (and somewhat haunting) to explore the relics of a bygone era.

To get to the Catskills from New York City, you can take a train to New Paltz and start your explorations from there!

7. The Adirondacks

Another mountainous region, the Adirondacks lies north of Albany and is well known for its gorgeous lakes and rugged landscape as well as miles of hiking trails. During the fall, this is a great place to watch the leaves as they explode into a sea of red, orange, and yellow and, in the winter, you can ski or snowboard at Whiteface Mountain. In the spring, the area bursts into color again as the flowers begin to bloom and by summer, the small towns are bustling with energy as New Yorkers arrive by the busload for some outdoor adventure.

Some of the most popular spots in the Adirondacks are the stunning Lake George and Lake Placid which have plenty of accommodation and dining options no matter your budget or travel style. Both places get very busy on the weekends in the summer so if you are looking for something a little bit quieter, you may want to visit on a weekday.

You can reach the Adirondacks from Manhattan by taking Amtrak’s Adirondack line. The train ride should take roughly four hours. FYI, the same train goes all the way to Montreal so the Adirondacks could easily be combined with a much longer overland trip.

Day Trips West of NYC

When you begin heading west out of the city, you will immediately hit the Hudson River and then be in New Jersey. While the areas bordering New York aren’t the most attractive places in the area, the state is full of quaint towns that look like they are from a Norman Rockwell painting where many of New York City’s commuters live. As you keep going, you reach the border of Pennsylvania and the start of the beautiful Pocono Mountains which hold plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities.

8. Morristown, New Jersey

Located along the New Jersey Transit Railway, Morristown is a mid-sized city with an interesting history. During a visit, you can check out the Ford Mansion which housed George Washington between 1779 and 1780 and is furnished just like it would have been when he stayed there. Meanwhile, his troops stayed nearby in basic huts in Jockey Hollow and you can see a reconstructed hut if you want to get an idea of what living conditions the soldiers were enduring.

The Morris Museum showcases an impressive array of historical items and artifacts within a sprawling mansion and if you want to let your inner teenager out, you can head over to the Morristown Game Vault where you can try out more than 85 different retro arcade games.

Morristown is centered around a charming main square and the main street is located just a hop, skip, and a jump from the Morristown Train Station.

9. The Poconos

The Poconos lie just a few hours west of New York City and this is another great place to get reconnected with nature. One of the top things to do in the Poconos is visit the Delaware Water Gap, which includes a section of the famed Appalachian Trail and is also known as the Gateway to the Poconos. While you are there, you can go swimming or kayaking from one of the beaches, walk along the miles of hiking trails, or even climb a waterfall! History buffs will also love visiting some of the historic sites dating back to the French Indian War in the 18th century.

The area is also home to three state parks that are well worth checking out such as the Big Pocono State Park, Tobyhanna State Park, and Hickory Run State Park. All three parks offer endless expanses of untouched nature, which provides the perfect setting for a day of horseback riding, hiking, or mountain biking.

It is easy to catch a bus from Port Authority Bus Station to Mount Pocono taking roughly two hours. If possible, try to avoid the peak rush hours as sitting in traffic could end up eating up some of your precious vacation time.

Day Trips to the South of NYC

As you head south into New Jersey, you will begin to see some of the “old-school” vacation destinations that city folks used to flock to before the days of cheap flights and high-speed trains. While some of the places along the Jersey shore have seen better days, they provide an interesting look back in time much like the forgotten resorts of the Catskills.

10. Atlantic City

Atlantic City is famous for its boardwalk, saltwater taffy, and its casinos. While it went through a bit of a tawdry phase, things are looking up for the city again and there are plenty of family-friendly activities now on offer. The city boasts an impressive aquarium, has a line-up of great live music performances, and you can see a giant fake elephant on the side of the road (which is very cool, in our opinion)!

The city is home to many luxurious hotels equipped with high-tech casinos where you can let your inner card shark go free or simply watch the high rollers do their thing. The casinos usually have a great selection of nightlife on offer ranging from quiet cocktail bars to techno pool parties so make sure to check the schedules of different hotels to see if there is anything that strikes your fancy (or is maybe something that you want to avoid).

Atlantic City is easily reached via Amtrak from Penn Station. The ride should take around four hours. To read more about the great things to do there, make sure to check out our guide on the Best Things to Do in Atlantic City .

11. Cape May

Located on a small island at the southernmost point of the Jersey shore, Cape May was one of the first oceanfront resort towns in the country and a trip there almost feels a bit like going back in time thanks to the colorful clapboard houses and Victorian architecture. The island is very small so you can easily walk to most destinations or you can rent a bike and zoom around on two wheels.

The cape’s golden beaches are great for swimming and kayaking and if you want to get out on the water, there are also plenty of options for whale and dolphin watching cruises. You can also go and climb the 199 steps up to the iconic white and red Cape May Lighthouse located in Cape May Point State Park. From the top, you can see Cape May, The Wildwoods, and Cape May Point.

Cape May is about a two-and-a-half-hour drive from New York City. Alternatively, you can take the New Jersey Transit to Atlantic City and then take a bus to Cape May from there.

12. Wildwood

If you love amusement parks, you should make sure to leave some time to visit Wildwood, NJ! Located on its own barrier island, it’s an old-school resort city with more than 100 different amusement rides spread across amusement piers that jut out into the Atlantic Ocean. You could easily spend a full day there going on the different rides, eating ice cream cones, swimming in the ocean, and strolling along the boardwalk.

Wildwood is also a popular spot for festivals and events with a calendar that is jam-packed full of fun stuff like Italian and Irish ethnic festivals, live music and food festivals, and car shows. You can visit their website to find the schedule of upcoming events .

Wildwood is located just a 15-minute drive from Cape May so the two destinations could easily be combined into one great overnight trip!

Day Trips a Bit Further Afield

If you want to head a bit further afield or make a day trip more of a weekend getaway, there are plenty of great cities within four hours of New York City. Things are so close to one another here that you can even turn it into one fun-filled road trip!

While some of these places may pop up on some day trip lists from New York City, keep in mind that they are far from day trips. For your own sanity, don’t try to cram any of these into a day trip unless you have to. While it’s tempting to hop on a train to Philadelphia or Washington D.C. and back, there is so much to see that they warrant at least an overnight stay.

Also, don’t forget to download one of our entertaining scavenger hunts before you go! These will have you racing your nearest and dearest through the streets of cities up and down the East Coast as you are searching for your next clue. It is a great way to learn more about a city and we promise that you will have a great time doing it!

13. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

As one of the East Coast’s oldest cities, Philadelphia has played an important role in American history and is sure to thrill all the history buffs out there. Here, you can find some of the country’s most important historic sites, including the iconic Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. Once you have gotten your fill of history, you can then head over to the Delaware River Waterfront which is lined with restaurants, parks, attractions, and museums. And don’t forget to stop by the Philadelphia Museum of Art where you can unleash your inner-Rocky with a triumphant run up the museum’s steps.

If you want to learn about more great things that you can do in the City of Brotherly Love, don’t forget to check out our guide to the best things to do in Philadelphia . Traveling to Philadelphia from New York couldn’t be easier thanks to Amtrak’s Acela Express which whisks passengers between the two cities in just over an hour and a half. Tickets can be very, very expensive though so make sure to check on the prices before you make plans. Otherwise, there are many buses that ply the same route and take around two hours (this varies greatly based on traffic though!).

14. Washington, D.C.

As the capital of the United States, Washington D.C boasts some of America’s most famous buildings such as the White House, home of the President of the United States, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Washington Monument as well as an endless list of world-class museums. One of the best things about visiting Washington D.C. is that many of the attractions are completely free. During a visit, you can spend hours walking through the galleries of the Smithsonian, take a guided tour of the Mall, or explore some of the city’s many interesting neighborhoods, all without spending a dime!. Find out all the great things to do D.C !

Although hotels in Washington D.C can be expensive, there are a number of other options including Airbnbs, guest houses, and hostels to choose from if you are traveling on a budget.

The Amtrak train from New York City to Washington takes around three and a half hours or you can catch a bus from Port Authority Bus Station.

15. Boston, Massachusetts

Boston may be particularly well-known for a tea party that went very wrong and as the location of the bar where “everyone knows your name” but there is much, much more to see in the city than that! The city is practically overflowing with history and you can get just a glimpse of all of the important things that happened there by taking a stroll along the Freedom Trail. Afterward, you can grab dinner and drinks in Beacon Hill, one of the city’s most historic (and most expensive!) neighborhoods. You can find out much more about Boston by heading over to some of the best things to do in Boston .

While there are plenty of ways to get to Boston, two of the easiest from Manhattan are the Amtrak train or Greyhound bus. Both take around four and a half hours.

16. New Haven, Connecticut

New Haven is a charming college town that is home to Yale University, one of the country’s most prestigious schools. As you can probably guess, the city boasts plenty of stately, brick buildings that are crawling with ivy and idyllic parks, as well as a wide selection of art galleries and museums and a thriving cultural scene. The university museums are open to the public and there are student-led walking tours for anyone who wants to learn more about the university’s history and the campus.

It is easy to get to New Haven as there is a direct train leaving from Grand Central Station heading towards New Haven Union Station. The ride should take just over two hours.

17. Niagara Falls

Straddling both the Canadian and American borders, Niagara Falls is one of the biggest waterfalls in the entire world. You can visit the falls on a boat, on foot via one of the area’s many hiking trails, or even on a helicopter! History lovers can also visit Fort Niagara which was used during the War of 1812 and gives visitors an idea of what military life was like in the late 18th century. As you may expect, the falls can get very crowded, especially when the tour buses arrive, but luckily, there are plenty of great places that you can go to escape the crowds. To learn more, check out our guide to the best things to do in Niagara Falls .

It is possible to take a train to Niagara Falls which should take around nine hours. While this seems like a lot, keep in mind that Amtrak trains are usually very comfortable with spacious seats so depending on the schedules, you may be able to do at least one leg of the trip overnight. There are also plenty of accommodation options on both the Canadian and American sides of the falls giving visitors a very different experience.

Why we love it:

  • A 45-minute stop by Zuccotti Park for lunch offers visitors the chance to eat at Gansevoort Liberty Market, outdoor food carts, Eataly and more, just like countless New Yorkers downtown.
  • The drive up Broadway, and down Fifth Avenue offers visitors a taste of several neighborhoods they may want to return to (think: West Village and Chinatown). Guides are happy to recommend how to return to these areas and share personal recommendations for shopping, dining and low-priced tickets.
  • There’s never a boring moment – each block has a story about a synagogue, a celebrity, a changemaker or other notable figures in New York history. The comprehensive overview takes visitors from 1600s New Amsterdam to 2024’s Tony Award contenders.

The best train trips from NYC for a scenic rail adventure

New York City is just a few hours from historic cities and beautiful communities accessed via train—and with breathtaking views along the way!

Photograph: Shutterstock

As much as the U.S. is heavily car-dependent and the American past time is a good ol’ summer  road trip along historic routes across the states, the Northeast is definitely spoiled with accessible rail connections making it easy for rail aficionados, business travelers, tourists and anyone to sojourn between cities and small towns for quick day trips and weekend getaways in any season. New York City, especially, is within 10 hours of some historic cities and beautiful communities accessed via train—and with breathtaking views along the way!

Even though the region doesn’t have sweeping scenic train rides such as the California Zephyr going into the Rocky Mountains or the Coast Starlight route with Cascade Mountains and Pacific Coast views, the New York/Northeast route can still boast of historic landmarks and ruins along the Hudson Valley, sparkling waters of the Connecticut coastline in summer, and truly spectacular fall foliage in autumn.

Check out these direct train routes that’ll offer up scenic views right outside your window.

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

1.  enjoy hudson river and mountainous views to pittsfield, ma.

Enjoy Hudson River and mountainous views to Pittsfield, MA

Use that PTO and hop onto the Berkshire Flyer’s seasonal weekend service route for the long but scenic train ride to Pittsfield—the Heart of the Berkshires . Gaze out the window at the lush Hudson River valley green and its historic ruins as the four-hour train rolls through Poughkeepsie where the Gilded Age Vanderbilt Mansion is a few miles north of the station. The Berkshires is famous for a thriving ecosystem of woodlands, wetlands, and mountains , all of which attract outdoorsy travelers. Pack a bike or hiking boots to enjoy the scenic landscape in Pittsfield, which is visible as the train rolls into town.

3.  See skyline and river views of Philadelphia, PA

See skyline and river views of Philadelphia, PA

Philadelphia is a hop, skip, and a jump away from NYC (just an hour and a half) and while the views tend to be industrial, graffiti-decorated, or bland as you pass through New Jersey and Delaware, the left side of the train is where you’ll see the Philadelphia skyline and Boathouse Row along the Schuylkill River before arrival at Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station.

What train route? Amtrak Northeast Regional How long is the train ride? 1 hour 30 minutes from New York’s Moynihan Hall.  Why is this route nice? Exploring Canandaigua's history: A walking tour of iconic bars and restaurants

trips of nyc

CANANDAIGUA — Flannigan’s Restaurant opened in 1866 in downtown Canandaigua, and the establishment owned by John ,soon became a popular and well-known place for oysters throughout the region.

And to end their 19 th -century day, perhaps a drink and a toast to the good men and women of the village of Canandaigua. Yes, that’s right, the village, not the city – not yet anyway.

Over time, Flannigan, a Democrat, would become an influential behind-the-scenes person in local and state politics and would play a part in Canandaigua becoming a city – and in the process, remaining a place where visitors could drink during a time when temperance was the buzzword of the day.

Stroll downtown today, and it’s hard to believe in the same place where Peacemaker Brewing Co., Acquilano’s Wine Cellars, the Niagara Bar & Restaurant, Bubby’s Tavern and so many others operate successfully, the likes of Thos. E. Murphy Restaurant, James T. Barry Wines and Liquors and the Coyle Bros. Tavern of another time were threatened.

And it wasn’t easy for Flannigan and his cohorts.

The effort required some nifty political tiptoeing, as prior to 1913, two votes to make Canandaigua a dry village had failed. But, according to Benjamin Falter, director of education for the Ontario County Historical Society and leader of a summerlong series of walking tours of the city’s old watering holes, Flannigan and other like-minded businessmen of the day feared a third time could be a charm.

But they saw a sign of hope in a loophole in state law.

“If we become a city, then we don’t have to worry about whether or not we’re going to become dry anymore,” Falter said.

But first, mix up a bee’s knees or grasshopper cocktails, and learn more about the tour.

Walking into Canandaigua's past

Falter came to the Historical Society from the Rochester Museum and Science Center. His wife saw the job opening here and thought he would enjoy and thrive in the role.

She was right, and it is a perfect fit, he said.

Hired in late November 2021, Falter thought there was a real place for a regularly scheduled live walking tour. They first explored the historic churches of North Main Street in Canandaigua, and “that was successful enough that we decided to keep doing them,” Falter said.

Next up were tours of local cemeteries, the Ontario County Courthouse, Canandaigua Pier and Kershaw Park and an insider tour of the Historical Socety’s museum on Main Street.

“We’ve had growing success with each tour,” Falter said. “People seem to enjoy getting to walk around and learn about the history of these places. It’s a really exciting program that I really, really enjoy doing.”

Falter had wanted to do a tour of the downtown area, but he needed a unifying theme. Why not a tour of the places in Canandaigua where you could get a drink before Prohibition?

Francine Bremer, who took the tour with husband Robert, has been on tours that Falter has led, and he does a tremendous job, she said, especially providing details and the history of the area.

“I like the topic, number one,” Francine Bremer said. “He’s very good so I figured it would be a fun time.”

And that’s the way Falter approached it, as a fun way to look at the history of Main Street and how it’s changed and evolved over the years.

That and the alcohol business is nearly a universal human experience.

“Humans have been making alcohol since civilization began. Beer was made in ancient Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt,” Falter said. “It’s something most people have an experience with even if they weren’t drinkers themselves. It’s all around us. I also think people find Prohibition fascinating.”

Temperance and Canandaigua

Ten people are meeting up in the public square across from City Hall and near the courthouse, set to begin what is billed as a 90-minute tour, with some stops for history lessons.

No booze, by the way.

This is near where the former Canandaigua Hotel used to stand, before it burned down in the 1970s, Falter said. State Sen. John Raines lived nearby; he was responsible for a provision in an unpopular state law that tried to limit the sale of alcohol on Sundays, Falter explained.

Americans were drinking on average seven gallons of alcohol a year in the 19 th century, compared to a third of that today.

“There was a reason the temperance movement took off,” Falter said, as he led the tour down Main Street toward Niagara Street.

Did efforts to limit drinking in Canandaigua take? Not really.

The Webster House, Boswell & Egan Liquors and the Imperial Hotel are just a few of the old watering holes folks on the tour can learn more about, along with some stories about the people behind them and who frequented them.

A lot of those buildings are no longer standing, Falter said, but some are, if almost none of them are the businesses that they used to be.

The Green Front restaurant is an exception.

The original eatery opened in 1928 and once was a speakeasy, which required a password to enter.

This was not a well-kept secret, Falter said.

“People were going to drink,” Falter said, during a stop outside the restaurant under a shade tree. “Americans really liked to drink and really didn’t like Prohibition.”

Jessica VandeMar, who is working on a history project of her own where she works as marketing manager at the Finger Lakes Visitors Connection, said she didn’t know half of what Falter had been saying on this tour, but said it’s so interesting to hear about the history of the area.

“We were at the Green Front for lunch the other day,” VandeMar said. “Who knew it was a speakeasy once upon a time?”

This and all sorts of other historical tidbits await tourgoers.

Falter tells the tale of the biggest rum-running arrest of the time where historians believe was at the Webster House, which sat where Commons Park is today.

Revenuers seized 150 gallons of illegal alcohol on an early morning August day in 1926. The rum runner in question, who was charged with unlawful possession and transporting of alcohol, was believed to have stopped for the night as Canandaigua because he was between larger cities.

Or maybe not.

“People needed to drink here, too,” Falter said, even if some thought differently, which brings the story back to Flannigan and his restaurant.

Could one vote in Canandaigua lead to another?

The state Legislature was considering an amendment to the state constitution that would grant women the right to vote at about the time business owners feared losing their ability to sell alcohol.

Women made up a lot of the temperance movement, Falter said, so if the voting amendment went through (which it did in 1917), women voters could push for another vote that would make Canandaigua a dry village.

Villages and towns were allowed to exercise a local option when it comes to allowing alcohol in their boundaries, Falter said, but cities were not allowed to exercise that local option and had to abide by whatever the state law was on access to alcohol.

Meaning, bottoms up in cities.

Falter said over two weeks, Flannigan and other Canandaigua business leaders persuaded local government to set a public vote on the matter and held it, just over a week after setting the vote.

“It was very, very quick, this attempt to get it across the finish line before women potentially would gain the right to vote,” Falter said.

Prohibition in Canandaigua

Canandaigua, of course, became a city, almost overnight, Falter said, and the seats at the bars were filled.

Until Prohibition came along, that is.

The walking tour winds up at City Hall, where Falter explains how “absolutely swamped” judges and their courts with alcohol-related cases during Prohibition and how many of the overwhelmed judges had to be lenient, as it seemed every “Tom, Dick and Harry” was before them, Falter said.

Glenna Renaud of Canandaigua knew some about Prohibition, but joined the tour to learn more about where the old buildings were and what was inside them.

Renaud walked away with a more extensive understanding of what went on in her hometown.

“You can read a book and all but it’s better to have someone tell you and show you on a walking tour,” Renaud said.

To take the Canandaigua Watering Holes tour

Tours will meet in Ontario County Park, at the intersection of Main and Ontario streets, across from Canandaigua City Hall. The tours are free but donations will be accepted.

Be prepared to walk and stand for about 90 minutes.

Tours are scheduled for noon Saturday, June 22; 2 p.m. Friday, June 28; 2 p.m. Friday, July 19; 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2; noon Saturday, Aug. 10; and 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16.

Justin Timberlake arrested for suspicion of driving while intoxicated in the Hamptons

Justin Timberlake has been arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

The " Selfish " singer was apprehended by police in the Hamptons at 12:37 a.m. Tuesday, according to a press release from the Sag Harbor Village Police Department.

According to police, Timberlake was pulled over after failing to stop at a stop sign and "maintain his lane of travel." "Upon investigation it was determined that Mr. Timberlake was operating his vehicle in an intoxicated position," the release claims.

The singer was held overnight following his arrest and was released on his own recognizance following his Tuesday morning arraignment.

USA TODAY has reached out to Timberlake's representatives for comment.

Justin Timberlake's arrest comes amid his Forget Tomorrow tour

The 43-year-old's arrest comes ahead of two concerts on The Forget Tomorrow World Tour in Chicago on Friday and Saturday.

The "Mirrors" singer, actor and former member of the boyband NSYNC announced the tour in January , his first in five years. The North American leg of the tour kicked off in April at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada, with stops including cities in the U.S., Canada, Europe and the U.K.

Timberlake's return to the stage follows the release of his sixth album,  "Everything I Thought It Was ."

"I worked for a long time on this album and I ended up with 100 songs," he told Zane Lowe for  Apple Music 1 in January. "So narrowing them down to 18 was a thing, and then, yeah, I’m really excited about this album. I think every artist probably says this, but it is my best work."

He added: "There are moments that are incredibly honest, but also, there’s a lot of fun on this album. … Some of the songs are more introspective and some of them are more what I think people know me for."

Timberlake also performed several free shows , including a stop in his hometown of Memphis, New York City and Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles show in March included a surprise performance of his song "Paradise," which features his NSYNC bandmates.

Videos on social media  showed Timberlake standing as the curtain behind him slowly revealed  Lance Bass ,  Joey Fatone ,  Chris Kirkpatrick  and  JC Chasez . The crowd instantly went wild, screaming louder than the group as they began singing.

The group performed "Paradise" and "Bye Bye Bye" together, bridging their new music with their classic hit. The night marked their first performance with all five band members since their reunion at the 2013 VMAs.

Thomas Took Additional Trips on Harlan Crow’s Private Jet, Documents Show

A congressional committee released documents showing that Justice Clarence Thomas had not disclosed three private jet trips paid for by the Texas billionaire Harlan Crow.

Reporting from Washington

Justice Clarence Thomas never disclosed three trips aboard the private jet of the Texas billionaire Harlan Crow, according to documents obtained by the Senate Judiciary Committee released on Thursday.

The documents, obtained by Democrats on the panel, list three visits that have not previously been reported: one to a city in Montana, near Glacier National Park, in 2017; another to his hometown, Savannah, Ga., in March 2019; and another to Northern California in 2021.

The purpose of each trip was not immediately clear, nor was the reason for their omission on the justice’s disclosure forms. However, all of the flights involve short stays: two were round trips that did not include an overnight stay.

The revelation underlined the extent to which Justice Thomas has relied on the generosity of his friends over the years and the consistency with which he declined to report those ties.

Justice Thomas has said that he had been advised he did not need to disclose gifts of personal hospitality from friends who did not have cases before the Supreme Court.

The announcement is all but certain to fuel the fight over greater transparency at the Supreme Court . Lawmakers’ efforts to require that justices be held to ethics standards similar to those for the executive and legislative branches have faltered. And even as the court, under immense public scrutiny, announced its first ethics code in the fall, experts immediately pointed out its lack of an enforcement mechanism or penalties should a justice have violated it.

The revealing of the trips “makes it crystal clear that the highest court needs an enforceable code of conduct, because its members continue to choose not to meet the moment,” Senator Richard J. Durbin, Democrat of Illinois and the chairman of the committee, said in a statement.

Justice Thomas did not immediately respond to a request for comment. His lawyer, Elliot S. Berke, did not respond to questions about details of the trips, but defended the trips in a statement.

The information, supplied to lawmakers by Mr. Crow, “fell under the ‘personal hospitality exemption’ and was not required to be disclosed by Justice Thomas,” Mr. Berke said.

Mr. Berke was referring to an exception to federal disclosure requirements that underwent a rule change by the Administrative Office of U.S. Courts in March last year. The change required the justices to disclose more of their activities, including some free trips, air travel and other types of gifts. All three trips happened before that rule change.

Mr. Berke said that, since the rule change, “Justice Thomas has fully complied with the new disclosure requirement.”

A spokesman for Mr. Crow, Michael Zona, said in a statement that Mr. Crow had agreed to cooperate with the committee, furnishing “information responsive to its requests going back seven years.”

The first trip, from May 7 to 9, 2017, involved a private jet flight from St. Louis, Mo., to Kalispell, Mont., and on to Dallas, Texas.

Justice Thomas delivered remarks at the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis on Friday, May 5, 2017, but it is not clear what he was doing in Montana. Kalispell, a city of roughly 29,000 in the state’s northwest, is known as a gateway to Glacier National Park, a haven for fly fishing and hiking. The reasons for his stop in Dallas, where Mr. Crow lives, are unclear.

The second trip took place on March 23, 2019. It was a single-day, round-trip to Savannah, Ga., where he grew up. His mother and several relatives remain in the area.

The third trip was also a single-day excursion, a round-trip flight on June 29, 2021, from Washington, to San Jose, Calif. The court issued at least three opinions that day, according to the Supreme Court website , but it was during the Covid-19 crisis when the justices were allowed to work remotely, meaning they did not have to appear in person in the courtroom.

According to his most recent financial disclosure report, which was released last week , Justice Thomas amended previous filings to add 2019 vacations with Mr. Crow to Bali, Indonesia, and Bohemian Grove, a secretive, all-male retreat in Northern California. Justice Thomas did not report any private jet flights or travel from benefactors for 2023, the year covered by the most recent disclosure.

He listed one gift: a pair of photo albums worth $2,000 from Terrence and Barbara Giroux. Mr. Giroux is the departing executive director of the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, an exclusive group that includes figures at some of the highest echelons of society.
