TUI Travel Money Review: Fees and Rates Explained 2024

Claire Millard

If you’re planning an overseas trip or holiday, you’ll need to work out how to manage your money while you’re away.

Your options include getting foreign currency cash, using a preloaded travel card to buy foreign currency in advance, choosing a dedicated multi-currency card and account, or sticking with your normal bank debit or credit card. Each option has its own advantages and disadvantages - and most travellers choose to use several of these payment methods so there’s always a Plan B available if for some reason your primary payment method can’t be used.

tui online travel money

TUI offers both travel money in cash, and the TUI Travel Money Card which is a preloaded multi-currency card . This guide covers all the details you need to know about getting your holiday money through TUI, plus a few alternatives, like Wise debit card or Revolut  to compare to make sure you get the best possible deal.

What is TUI Travel Money?

TUI is one of the biggest travel agents in the UK , and also offers travel money services, including travel money for cash collection in 50 currencies, and a travel money card. If you’re ordering your travel money in cash, you’ll have the following options:

Order your travel money in cash online and collect in your local TUI store at any time in the following 2 - 7 days

Order your travel money in cash online by 2pm, to have it delivered to your home by 9pm the following day

TUI doesn’t charge a specific fee for travel money - instead their charges are rolled up into the exchange rate used to convert your pounds to the currency you need. If you’re choosing the home delivery option, there may be a delivery charge depending on how much you’re ordering, and someone must be home to sign for the delivery when it arrives.

While it’s very common for exchange services to state that they offer 0% commission currency conversion, that doesn’t mean that getting your travel money is actually free. We’ll look at the impact of the exchange rates used by TUI on the overall costs of your transaction in more detail later, plus a look at some alternatives which may offer more transparent fees.

If you don’t want foreign currency cash, you can also get a TUI Travel Money Card to hold 13 currencies, which we’ll cover in more detail next.

TUI Travel Money Card

If you’d rather not carry round all your spending money in cash, TUI also offers a dedicated multi-currency card called the TUI Travel Money Card. You can pop into a TUI branch to get 2 linked cards for free, or order online for home delivery. TUI provides 2 cards, so you’ll always have a backup if your primary card is lost - simply activate the second card to get your funds while you’re away.

TUI Travel Money Cards can hold 13 currencies which between them cover many of the popular destinations for British holidaymakers:

Australian dollars

Canadian dollars

New Zealand dollars

South African rand

Turkish lira

Mexican peso

Bulgarian lev

Croatian kuna

Pounds sterling

You’ll be able to top up your card in the currency you need online or in a TUI store, and then spend any currency you hold for free when you travel. If you’re making ATM withdrawals from the card there are fees which are in the region of 1.5 GBP, but varied by currency, and if you spend a currency you don’t hold in your account, there’s a cross-currency fee of 3%.

We’ll cover the full fee details later, but it’s also useful to note that you pay a 2% fee to top up your TUI Travel Money Card in pounds, with no upfront fee to add funds in a foreign currency. This may sound like a great deal, but in reality, it’s likely to simply mean that the fee for topping up in a foreign currency is wrapped up in the exchange rate used to convert your pounds to the currency you need. More on the TUI travel money exchange rates later.

What are the travel money card alternatives?

The TUI Travel Money Card isn’t your only option. Alternative providers may be able to offer more flexibility on the number of supported currencies, a better exchange rate, and lower overall costs. Here are a few to consider:

You can order a Wise card online or via an app, and manage or top up your money electronically whenever you need to. Wise supports over 50 currencies. Top up for free in GBP or another supported currency, with local bank details for up to 10 currencies.

Wise uses the mid-market exchange rate for currency conversion. The Wise card will automatically convert your balance to the currency you need with no extra charges - unlike the TUI Travel Money Card which uses 3% fee when you spend a currency you don’t hold in your account.

Starling is a full UK online bank, which offers a broader range of services compared to TUI. Even if you’re not in the market to get a new bank, a Starling account might be a good option for your travel needs, as accounts are free to open, with no monthly charges, and offer fee-free spending abroad using the Mastercard rate.

You can sign up for Starling online or with your phone in just a few minutes, and manage your account online or through the app easily. Starling works differently to TUI’s travel money card, in that you won’t be able to top up in a broad range of currencies - only pounds or euros. However, whenever you spend or withdraw with your card, Starling will convert your funds to the currency you need with the live Mastercard rate. That’s a popular option because the Mastercard exchange rate is generally very fair, and while it may include a markup, it’s normally very small.

Revolut offers multi-currency accounts which can hold and exchange 30+ currencies, with a linked card to spend in 150+ currencies. You can either choose a free Revolut plan or upgrade to a fee of up to 12.99 GBP/month to get more features. Even with the free Revolut plan you can convert currencies up to 1,000 GBP a month with no fees, and get some fee free international cash withdrawals too. That makes Revolut a strong alternative to the TUI Travel Money Card if you’re looking for fee free transactions.

Revolut accounts also come with additional features, including tools to budget and save, linked children’s accounts, cashback, insurance and travel perks. However, to get the full range of benefits you’ll need to pay a monthly fee.

What are the fees?

Whether you choose to get your travel money in cash from TUI, or prefer to order their dedicated multi-currency card, you’ll have a few costs to pay. Here’s what you need to know.

TUI Travel Money fees

As we mentioned earlier, TUI doesn’t use a specific fee for travel money in foreign currency cash. Instead their charges are added into the exchange rates used, so you’d need to compare the TUI exchange rate against the mid-market rate to be able to calculate the full TUI fee. More on that later.

The only upfront cost you’ll come across with TUI travel money is a delivery charge of 4.99 GBP if you’re ordering cash for home delivery valued at less than 600 GBP.

Tui Travel Money Card fees

Here are the charges you’ll usually see when using a TUI Travel Money Card:

How do I get a TUI travel money card?

You can pick up a TUI Travel Money Card instantly by visiting a TUI store. Alternatively you can order online for store collection - in which case your card will be ready for collection in a couple of days - or home delivery. If you choose the home delivery option it may take up to 2 weeks for your TUI Travel Money Card to arrive.

How do I activate my TUI card?

Depending on how you ordered your card, you may need to activate it before you can use it. You’ll always need to activate the second card provided by TUI if you want to use this instead of your primary card.

If your card needs to be activated, you’ll be able to do so by following the instructions in the letter that comes with your card. You’ll simply need to call the phone number given in the document, and give the activation code which is shown in your paperwork, following automated messages.

How much does it cost to buy travel money from TUI?

It can be a little bit tricky to work out what you’re actually paying when you buy travel money from TUI. That’s because the costs for buying foreign currency cash, or for topping up your travel money card in a foreign currency, are wrapped into the exchange rate that’s used to convert from pounds to the currency you need. That means that to see the actual fees you’re paying you’d need to take the TUI exchange rate and compare it to the mid-market exchange rate.

The mid-market exchange rate is a useful benchmark because this is the rate large providers like TUI get when they buy currencies themselves. To calculate the retail rate they use for their customers, they’ll then add in a percentage fee to cover their costs and generate a profit. This is really common - but makes it very hard to figure out the costs of buying travel money.

A couple of fees that TUI is upfront about include:

2% fee to top up your card in pounds

3% fee to spend a currency you don’t hold

It’s useful to note that the 3% fee applies to any currency you don’t have in your TUI account, even if it’s a currency supported by the card. So let’s say you topped up your card in pounds but spent in France without exchanging your funds. In this case you’d pay the 2% fee at the point of topping up, plus a 3% fee for spending euros when your card only holds pounds. That could mean you have quite a lot less to spend than you think.

What is the TUI exchange rate?

TUI exchange rates for online orders are available on their desktop site. Rates for in store purchases can vary so you’d need to ask in the store when you visit. In both cases, markups - extra fees - are likely to apply.

Not all travel money services bundle their fees into the exchange rates used.

Some of the providers we mentioned earlier as TUI alternatives are good examples. Wise splits out the costs of converting your currency transparently, they use the mid-market rate - and keeps costs down to around 0.4% to 1% for most currencies. Revolut allows customers to convert funds using the mid-market exchange rate up to limits which are set by the plan you choose - again making the process more transparent and keeping costs low.

How does the service work?

You can call into a TUI branch to get your travel money - or order your TUI travel money online for home delivery or in store collection. In this case the process is pretty simple:

Open the TUI website and select the travel money options

Select the currency you need and enter the amount in pounds you want to spend, or the value in foreign currency you want to receive

Add to your basket

Follow the prompts to enter your home delivery address, or the store to collect in

Check over the basket amount and make your payment

You’ll be shown a delivery time, or the earliest possible in store collection time, when you confirm your payment.

If you’d rather get a travel money card you can also order this online for home delivery or pop into a store. If you’re ordering online, simply take the same steps set out above, but select the option to buy a card rather than to get foreign cash. Online deliveries can take 2 weeks to arrive.

TUI has options for getting your travel money including cash for collection or delivery, and the prepaid TUI Travel Money Card. There are usually no upfront fees to pay when you get TUI travel money, but there are costs which are bundled into the exchange rates used. If you choose the travel money card you’ll also run into some other charges such as ATM fees and cross currency fees of 3%.

Depending on your specific needs you may find you can get a more flexible travel card with a different provider, which could also offer lower fees and a better exchange rate. Compare a few options before you pick the perfect travel money solution for your own needs.

Travel money

If you’re planning a trip abroad, you’ll need to think about the most convenient way to arrange your travel money.

This might mean exchanging currency before you leave, taking cash to exchange upon arrival, using a prepaid travel card, or relying on your credit or debit card, for example. You can also use a service like Wise and the free online Wise account . You’ll be able to hold and manage dozens of different currencies, access the mid-market exchange rate, and spend using your linked debit card all over the world.

Doing some research before you choose a provider - or providers - for your travel money will mean you can get the very best available deal for your holiday money. This guide covers all you need to know about travel money from TUI - as well as taking a look at Wise (formerly TransferWise) as a smart alternative.

TUI travel money services

TUI is famous as a travel agent offering holidays, cruises, hotel bookings and flights. You can also get all the extras you might need to make your trip comfortable and convenient - including your travel money.

The full range of travel money services includes in store exchange, click and collect foreign currency, travel money for home delivery, and a prepaid multi-currency card. The easiest way to check options and availability for your specific currency is to look online . Select the currency you need to see the options for collection and delivery - bearing in mind some services may be disrupted due to pandemic restrictions.

TUI Store collection

TUI offers travel money services in store, including currency exchange and click and collect travel money.

At the time of research many TUI stores have been forced to close due to restrictions and local lockdowns in place to combat the global pandemic. This may mean the in store and click and collect service is not available at a location convenient to you. However, some units are still operating, and the situation will change as restrictions evolve. You’ll be able to find a full list of all TUI travel money locations online - but do check out the most up to date information about store openings before you travel .

Here are some of TUI’s major London stores which are open at the time of writing:

*Store information and opening accurate at the time of writing - 14th December 2020

Home delivery

If you order travel money from TUI for home delivery, it’ll arrive the next working day as long as you submit your request before 2pm. It’s good to know that you’ll need to be home to sign for the delivery, and the delivery address used must be the same as the address your payment card is registered to.

TUI travel money card

As well as foreign currency in cash, TUI offers a travel money card which can be used for 13 different currencies. Apply online or in store for, and you’ll receive 2 separate cards linked to the same account. Top up your account and then switch to the currency you need online or using the app. You can then spend your travel money anywhere the Mastercard symbol is displayed.

It’s good to know that there are some fees and limits related to the TUI travel money card. It’s also well worth looking at the exchange rate that is offered to buy travel money or switch your sterling balance to the currency you need. Although it’s usually free to spend currencies you own, that doesn’t mean you won’t pay a fee wrapped up in the exchange rate on offer.

You’ll also pay an ATM withdrawal fee which is set by currency, a 2% fee for GBP top-ups, a 3% charge if you spend in an unsupported currency, and a dormancy fee if you don’t use the card regularly enough. Check out the full travel money card terms and conditions to make sure you don’t run into any surprise costs.

Save with Wise when you spend in any currency

Wise offers a smart alternative way to spend when you’re abroad, thanks to the Wise account .

The Wise account is free to open online, and comes with a linked Mastercard debit card . It’s free to top up your account in pounds - and you’ll also be able to receive money to your account in euros, US, Singapore, Australian and New Zealand dollars, Romanian leu and Hungarian forint. Once you have money in your account, you can switch it to the currency you need using the mid-market exchange rate with no markup. You’ll only ever pay a small transparent conversion cost - which works out 8x cheaper than using your bank.

It’s free to spend any currency you hold using your linked Mastercard, and ATM withdrawals are free to the currency value of £200 a month, too. Take a look at the Wise account today for a cheaper and more convenient way to manage your travel money.

TUI travel money rates and fees

You’ll be able to see the exchange rate used by TUI when you order, click and collect or home delivery travel money - or when you call into a TUI location for currency exchange.

It helps to know that currency services often add a markup or margin to the exchange rate they use for travel money. This is especially likely when the service advertises commission free exchange. Instead of an upfront fee, providers may add a markup to the exchange rates to protect their profits. Check the exchange rate against the mid-market exchange rate for your currency pair before you complete your purchase, to make sure you’re getting a good deal.

Not all travel money services add a markup to the exchange rate on offer for customers. Wise , for example, uses the mid-market exchange rate and a clear, low fee which keeps down costs and makes it far easier to see the real cost of your travel money.

Making the most of your Polish zloty

If you’re going on holiday in Poland, you’ll want to sort out some spending money for your visit. Poland’s official currency is the Polish zloty.

Like all currencies, the exchange rate for Polish zloty varies from day to day, but as a guide, the average rate for early 2023 was PLN 5.01 to the pound.

Where to get your Polish zloty

You can get your Polish zloty before your trip from your nearest TUI Store . You can also order them from us online, or check out our handy multi-currency TUI Travel Money card. It works just like a debit card, and you can use it in 36 million places worldwide. Fees apply in Poland when using the card.

Spending your Polish zloty

ATMs are found all over Poland, and you can use credit cards in larger hotels and restaurants, but you’ll need zloty for smaller or more rural places. You could spend around PLN 130 a day depending on what you like to do, but for a closer estimate, try our handy TUI calculator to get a better idea.

Tipping is common in restaurants, and for services such as a salon visit, but otherwise just round up bills and fares if you want to show your appreciation.

Good Money Guide 2023

Best Travel Money Exchange Rates

This guide explains the cheapest and most expensive ways to buy travel money. It can help save you money if you are thinking about going abroad and trying to work out the best way to spend while you’re there.

Commission charges when you buy foreign currency have mostly been phased out. Now most currency operators make money on the difference between the interbank exchange rate and the rate they actually give you.

So the best way to know if you’re getting a good deal is to compare the actual exchange rate you’re getting.

For each of the currency exchange locations below we have used the euro as an example – but where you see a location giving a bad rate (versus the benchmark interbank rate) for euros, you can be pretty much guaranteed you’ll get a bad rate on any other currency at that place too.

Here are the ways to get the most for your money when buying foreign currency, ranked best to worse.

(All exchange rate figures accessed on 31 May 2023.)

1. Currency cards – BEST RATE

Currency cards are debit card-style payment cards designed to be used while you are on holiday or travelling outside the UK to pay for goods and services, usually anywhere you see the Visa or Mastercard symbol. They either come as regular debit cards with travel money functions, or as a separate card that connects to your current account.

Currency cards offer some of the best exchange rates around, and are available from, for example, Starling, Monzo, Revolut , and Curresea.

The euro rates for Monzo and Starling are based on the Mastercard rate so are the same:

  • £1 = €1.152 (vs €1.16 inter bank rate)
  • On the (free) Curresea Essential plan the euro rate is:
  • £1 = €1.152
  • On the (paid for) Curresea Elite and Premium Plans the euro rate is:
  • £1 = €1.163
  • Ease : Currency cards are easy to apply for and usually arrive within a few days. If your bank already offers a travel card service as part of your account you may not even need to apply for a new card. Plus you don’t need to worry about changing up loads of cash before you go away.
  • Safety : If you lose cash, it’s usually gone forever. If you lose your currency card you can cancel or freeze it in the app that comes with it to prevent anyone else using your holiday money.
  • Virtual wallet: You can add most currency travel cards to your phone’s virtual wallet, so you can still pay if you only have your phone with you.
  • Charges : Fees and charges to use your currency card abroad can vary significantly so it’s a good idea to compare different providers before you choose which one to go with. Be aware the card provider – typically either Visa or Mastercard – can add its own fees of 1% to 3% on top of transactions.
  • ATM limits : Some card providers limit how much you can withdraw from an ATM in another currency, after which point more charges will kick in.
  • No section 75 protection : Debit card payments and purchases are not covered by section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. But you might be able to make a claim for a refund under a voluntary scheme called ‘chargeback’.

2. Cash point abroad

Withdrawing cash from an ATM abroad can be a good option if you use one of the cards mentioned above, or a travel credit card. They are designed for use while travelling, so give the best rates on foreign exchange, and limit the fees and charges you pay while using them abroad. It is for this reason that cash point abroad is 2nd on this list.

Currensea , for example, as well as offering one of the best exchange rates, allows free ATM withdrawals of up to £500 using its Essential Card (2% fees over), and with its Premium Card (which costs £25 a year) you can make fee free ATM withdrawals up to £500 (1% over).

Just remember – if the ATM tells you a fee applies, always choose to be charged in the local currency of the country you’re in (this also applies to card purchases).

However beware – this is important – if you just take your normal debit card or credit card abroad you can expect high fees from both your bank and the ATM you withdraw cash from every time you use it.

For example, Barclays charges a 2.99% fee for using your standard debit card abroad when making purchases, withdrawing cash or for refunds.

So while you get a pretty decent exchange rate with Barclays (which uses the Visa rate), once the fee is added the real rate is much less. It works out as:

  • Visa rate: £1 = €1.161 (vs €1.16 inter bank rate) before charges
  • Barclays debit rate after 2.99% fee added £1 = €1.128
  • Cheap if you use the right cards: Taking money out at an ATM abroad can be one of the cheapest ways to access cash if you use a card designed for travel that has fee-free options and a good exchange rate (see out Best Rated above).
  • Don’t have to carry so much cash : Carrying huge wads of cash is a theft risk. Carrying a couple of cards (one for use and one for back up) is much safer.
  • High costs if you use the wrong card : Avoid taking your regular debit or credit card abroad as to use it you will have to pay high fees.

3. Highstreet in the UK

UK highstreets offer a number of exchange rate options, from inside department stores like John Lewis, to specialist foreign exchange rate shops like No1 Currency. The rates will vary from place to place.

At No1 Currency, for example, the online rates are below, although the website says the in store rates may differ from what is advertised.

  • £1 = €1.136 (vs €1.16 inter bank rate)
  • £100 = €113.67

At John Lewis, on the same day the rate was a little lower.

  • £1 = €1.133 (vs €1.16 inter bank rate)
  • £100 = €113.38

At Marks & Spencer, the rate was:

  • Click & Collect: £1 = €1.138 (vs €1.16 inter bank rate)
  •  £100 = €113.80
  • In-store bureau de change: £1 = €1.119
  • £100 = €111.90

At a TUI branch the rate was:

  • £1 = €1.139 (vs €1.16 inter bank rate)
  • £100 = €113.90
  • Click and collect rates : No1 Currency for example gives you a better rate if you order online then pick up in store, rather than have your currency delivered.
  • Perks: For example at John Lewis you can earn points when you pay for currency with your Partnership Credit Card.
  • Delivery charges : No1 Currency only offers free delivery for orders of £800 or more. At John Lewis the minimum for free home delivery is over £500.
  • Minimum orders online: John Lewis, for example, has a £250 minimum for online orders.

4. Online with a supermarket

Most supermarkets sell travel money these days and it can be a convenient way to pick up some currency while you do your weekly shop. You can buy on the day or order online to collect.

As an added bonus, supermarkets offer a better rate on foreign currency for their loyalty card holders, pushing supermarkets up the ranking in terms of rates.

  • Standard rate: £1 = €1.130 (vs €1.16 interbank rate)
  • £100 = €113
  • Tesco Clubcard rate:  €1.135
  • £100 = €113.50

Sainsbury’s

  • £1 = €1.131 (vs €1.16 interbank rate)
  • £100 =  €113.17
  • Sainsbury’s Nectar card rate: €1.1340
  • £100 = €113.40
  • Loyalty perks and points : Loyalty card holders get better exchange rates, plus you can earn loyalty points when you pay for the currency just like any other purchase.
  • Convenience : Order online then pick up when you do your weekly shop.
  • Minimum order amounts: For example Tesco has a minimum order amount of £400 worth of currency when you buy online, and a minimum of £500 to have a free home delivery. There is no minimum order amount for Sainsbury’s but a £4.99 fee to have currency bought online delivered at home.

5. Post office

The Post Office is a handy one-stop-shop for lots of holiday related things, from travel insurance to international driving permits, and including travel money. While the Post Office doesn’t offer the best rates on the market, it does have several other advantages that could make it a good option, especially if you are in a hurry.

  • £1 = €1.116 (vs €1.16 inter bank rate)
  • £100 = €111
  • Rate increases : Order online for the best rates on every currency. The more you buy, the better the rate.
  • Fast pick up service : You can pick up euros and US dollars from your nearest branch in as little as 2 hours, from selected branches. Order by 2pm (1pm Saturday) to collect the same day, from 2 hours later. Order after 2pm (1pm Saturday) to collect the next working day, from 11am. Or you can choose delivery to your home.
  • Refund policy : Will refund 100% of the holiday money you bought if your trip abroad is cancelled
  • Queuing : With a number of Post Offices closing, and banks shutting branches that force Post Offices to do more services with less, queues to get you travel money in person can be long.
  • Limited currencies: Post Office in my experience don’t carry that much currency and only in a few of the most common types. Beware buying last minute – if you try to just pop in on the day to buy your currency without pre-ordering you may find they have run out, or don’t stock it.
  • Buying limits : The minimum you can buy online of a currency is £400 worth, and the maximum is £2,500.

6. At the airport

The only times I have bought currency at the airport it has been out of desperation and from a lack of forward planning – and I have always regretted it. It is typically one of the most expensive (i.e. worst exchange rate) places to buy foreign currency.

But if you’re in a panic because you forgot to get out any cash before your trip, it is at least convenient to be able to grab some foreign currency before your flight.

Two of the most common foreign exchange kiosks you’ll find at UK and global airports are Travelex and Eurochange. The rates below are for their online services – rates in the airport are likely to be worse.

Travelex (online)

  • £1 = €1.130 (vs €1.16 inter bank rate)

Eurochange (online)

  • £1 = €1.131 (vs €1.16 inter bank rate)
  • £100 = €113.10
  • Location : If in the rush to get away you forgot to pick up any currency, airport foreign exchange kiosks offer a last minute lifeline.
  • Availability of currencies: Because of their location, currency kiosks in international airports tend to be well stocked in multiple currencies, even the less common ones.
  • Switching currency : If you are visiting multiple countries on a trip but don’t want to carry large amounts of currency, changing up just what you need at each airport you pass through is an option.
  • Expense : You will never get the best foreign exchange rate at an airport.
  • Lack of comparison : Even if there is more than one currency store at the airport, they all tend to offer the same rates. Once you’re there you have no other options, you have to take what you can get.

7. Online with a bank

Buying travel money from your local bank might seem like the obvious choice, but surprisingly the rates on offer are likely among the worst you’ll get anywhere in the UK. However the limits on how much you can purchase can be higher (though you won’t get a better rate the more you buy so why bother?)

  • £1 = €1.105 (vs €1.16 inter bank rate)
  • £100 = €110.51
  • £1 = €1.106 (vs €1.16 inter bank rate)
  • £100 = €110.67
  • High purchase limits : At Barclays, for example, you can order up to £5,000 per person within a 90-day period, and a maximum of £2,500 from that amount can be sent for home delivery to a single residential address.
  • Fee free deliveries : HSBC, for example, offers fee-free deliveries on your travel money to HSBC Full and Cash Service branches or to your home. Other banks may charge.
  • Limited to customers : You may find you have to be a customer. For example, you’ll need a Barclays debit card or Barclaycard to place your order for currency online there.
  • Expensive : Among the worst rates for currency exchange you’ll find anywhere in the UK.

8. Bureau de change abroad – WORST RATE

Bureau de changes abroad are typically in tourist hotspots. And what do we know about tourist hotspots? Rife for pickpockets and overinflated prices. This is the attitude you should take to foreign currency shops in these locations.

One example that proves the ‘expensive option’ point is Ria Money Transfer & Currency Exchange, situated in the busy Plaza de Callao in central Madrid, Spain.

Ria’s exchange rate on 31 May 2023 was:

  • £1.00 = €0.99 (vs €1.16 inter bank rate)

Convenient : If you really need cash while you’re abroad, maybe because you’re in a place where your cards are not widely accepted, a local bureau de change may be a lifeline – just expect to pay heavily for that life raft.

  • Cost, cost, cost: Buying foreign currency from a currency shop or kiosk in a tourist hotspot (where you are most likely to find them) is an extremely expensive way of getting your hands on cash. Avoid if at all possible.
  • Theft risk : Pickpockets may hang around bureau de change just like they hang around ATMs, because they know you have just withdrawn what is probably a large amount of money. Secure your cash hidden away before you leave the kiosk.

Is it still worth getting travel cash ahead of your holidays?

Yes. Absolutely. Cards aren’t accepted everywhere, as I found to my detriment when I arrived in Buenos Aires and tried to take out local currency on my credit card at the foreign exchange desk at the airport.

“Absolutely not possible”, I was told. A combination of a lack of provision to buy currency on credit card there, and the Argentinian peso being just too volatile for credit card providers to let you buy it on their service.

All I had in hard currency was US$100 in Argetininian pesos I had changed in the airport at Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, where I had just come from, and a US$100 bill. Luckily I’d pre-paid my Buenos Aires hotel in advance, and I could easily find restaurants that would accept my credit card. But taxis only took cash, so I spent a lot of time walking – thinking about how I should have brought more pesos with me.

We’ve answered some of the most commonly asked questions when it comes to travel money.

Yes, in most cases. Cash withdrawal fees will probably apply of around 3%, just like they would at home for taking cash out on a credit card, and these will be on top of any currency conversion fees.

Be aware though – in countries with a highly fluctuating exchange rate, like Argentina, you may not be able to buy foreign cash with your credit card (not even at the bureau de change at the airport, for example). You still may be able to pay for goods and services with your credit cards, but check how widely they are accepted before you travel.

Yes, on the whole. When buying travel money online, like with buying anything online, you’re best off sticking to well known brands, whether that be banks, supermarkets, or currency exchange stores.

A large institution or well known brand is less likely to go bust, and that is important because foreign exchange is not a regulated service. This means your cash is not protected if the company you tried to get your foreign currency from closes suddenly.

Yes. Most places that sell you travel money will buy it back from you. But just like when you’re swapping your pounds for foreign currency, when you swap it back you should compare the exchange rates on offer. As a general rule, a location that offers a good rate one way, offers a good rate the other way.

Travel money providers – from the currency shops and bureau de change, to the banks and supermarkets, anywhere basically that sells currency – make money by giving you slightly less than the central banks give them for the foreign money you want to buy.

For example, if a currency provider tells you they will give you €1.131 for every pound you give them, but the central bank rate for euros is €1.157 per pound, the difference is €0.026, which they pocket. This may not sound much, but multiplied over millions of transactions a  year, it adds up.

Compare, compare, compare the single unit price – which means the £1 for a €1 rate, or whichever currency you choose, versus the interbank rate, which you can get by just Googling “1 GBP in EUR”.

Places that sell currency, online or in a shop, have to show you the exchange rate for that day. While it’s probably not practical to go traipsing around comparing shops, it’s easy enough to do so online. If you run up against minimum purchase amounts online, still go with the company providing the best rate but visit their location in person.

Also try not to get yourself in a position where you’re desperate to buy foreign currency, either at home or abroad. This means having enough cash on you in remote locations, and tourist hotspots, and before you travel (to avoid the airport currency shops).

Not impressed. Wouldn’t use again.

I went away for 7 weeks with this card. About 4 weeks in the app stopped letting me top the card up with money, I tried multiple different cards, but no luck. Stuck in Thailand with no money, I was able to get money on it through friends and family kindly topping it up for me from a TUI shop, however that would have been very inconvenient if I had been away for longer for both them and me. I tried to email the help desk with the email address copied off the help page and the email address didn’t even work!!!!! Very expensive card to use! In Thailand it was costing me around £7 every time I got cash out of a cash point!! 100% wouldn’t use this card for a longer trip as it is too unreliable.

Developer Response ,

Hi, I'm so sorry to hear you've had a bad experience. If you would like to discuss it further please feel free to call us on 0203 130 0133.

Does not work.

Thought this was a good idea as I have a daughter who when she see’s cash, plans how it could be spent immediately. Hot he cards, went home, set up account, all good so far. Downloaded the app, skipped the reviews (first mistake), set up password, wasn’t good enough, set up another, went through ok, logged in via the laptop, all good. Tried to log in through the app, no, incorrect credentials, checked the password, still no, then the app lost the servers. Tried again this morning, still incorrect, even tried copying and pasting the details over. Then read reviews, of dear god, someone got stuck abroad when their card stopped working. That’s enough for me. There are issues with this app that most likely won’t be resolved in time for me going away, time to go back to the store and see if I can get the cash. And make sure our daughter doesn’t see it.
Hi Kieron, I'm so sorry to hear you've had issues. Most of the time when the app doesn't let you log in but the website does, it's because the login details are being entered incorrectly. That's not to say that you are making a mistake, but many mobile phones these days 'auto-space' or 'auto-capitalize' so it could be that your phone is doing this to your password and or username. Both are case sensitive so this would cause an issue. If you'd like to discuss it further however please feel free to call us on 0203 130 0133.

Frustrating

Have used this card before and while a bit clunky it was okay. Recently had to replace with new cards due to the old ones expiring. Getting ready to use it again after a break for a couple of years. I can log onto the app and see the remaining balance but can I top up, no. The app isn’t saving the card, the app doesn’t stay open while you go to your backing app to confirm the transaction. Tried with two different cards. I can’t see the cards in the app but if I put in the same card details again, using the same nickname, it states that the nickname is already in use. Even got as far as the banking app saying my transaction was complete only for the TUI app to say it had failed? Probably because in those few seconds the TUI app had logged my out. Come on developers sort out this app.

Read our blog post on taking cash on holiday .

The best time to buy any travel money is when the pound is performing strongly relative to the currency you are buying, this means it will have a higher exchange rate, so will give you more currency for your money. The amount you receive is calculated by multiplying the exchange rate by the amount of pounds you want to spend, so the higher the exchange rate, the more foreign currency you get.

Exchange rates are constantly changing but we show you the historical exchange rate performance for each of the currencies so you can have more of an idea of whether now is a good time to buy your travel money.

Exchange rates tend to be very similar wherever you are in the world to those offered in the UK, however waiting until you are away means you may be stuck with poor exchange rates, fewer options of places to offer competitive rates or even worse, you may have to pay big additional fees and commissions. By buying your travel money in the UK there are no hidden fees, charges or nasty surprises, you know exactly how much you are getting.

Once you have found the best rate, place an order on the currency suppliers’ site, and pay for your currency. Each currency supplier has different payment options, including bank transfer, debit card, with some suppliers offering payment by Apple pay and Android pay. Once your order has been confirmed your order will be prepared and your currency sent to you by registered delivery, some suppliers even offer next-day delivery.

Top Cheap Travel Insurance Company Comparison

The best travel insurance meets your needs at a price you're willing to pay. Sometimes, you're just not willing to pay that much. The following companies offer decent coverage for low prices. To determine which companies made this list, we compared quotes across the travel insurance industry for the same trip, making a note of which companies offered particularly good coverage in certain areas and which companies were well reviewed.

Here are the best affordable travel insurance companies picked by Business Insider editors in 2024.

Best Affordable Travel Insurance Overall

Hth worldwide travel insurance.

The HTH Worldwide Travel Insurance Economy plan offers the most comprehensive coverage across major categories of all the providers in this guide.

You'll have some peace of mind with up to $75,000 of financial protection for eligible medical emergencies, and up to $500,000 per person for medical evacuation costs. For more everyday expenses, you can also relax with baggage loss and delay, trip interruption, cancellation and delay coverage that will help you recoup many, if not all, of your costs.

However, this plan falls short on missed connection benefits and accidental death coverage, both of which are not available under most circumstances (missed connection coverage only applies to cruises, and will only cover up to $500 per person after a three-hour delay).

Read our HTH Worldwide Travel Insurance review .

Best Affordable Travel Insurance for Trip Cancellation

Aegis general travel insurance.

The Aegis Trip Cancellation Plan is exactly that: a cost-effective plan that offers protection in the event that your trip is canceled for a covered reason. The plan we priced out for our hypothetical trip cost just 1.16% of our total travel expenses — a very small amount of money to pay for the guarantee of our money back in the right circumstances.

The benefit is that this plan can supplement other coverage you already have, or give you a little bit of protection for a trip where you might not otherwise have opted for insurance altogether. On the downside, you won't get any protection for medical emergencies, trip interruption or delays or lost bags from this plan.

Best Affordable Travel Insurance for Medical Coverage

Geoblue travel insurance.

GeoBlue is a travel insurance provider that specializes in travel medical insurance. Because it doesn't offer much trip protection or travel inconvenience coverage, it can charge cheaper premiums. A 30-year-old from California would pay as low as $20.55 for a policy that covers a two-week trip.

GeoBlue plans can cover medical expenses up to $1 million with several multi-trip annual plans available. It offers coinsurance plans for trips within the U.S. and 100% coverage for international trips. It also has a network of clinics in 180 countries, streamlining the claims process. It's worth noting that coverage for pre-existing conditions comes with additional costs.

Best Affordable Travel Insurance for Families

C&f travel insured.

There's a lot to like about C&F Travel Insured. For one, it is one of the only travel insurance companies that offers CFAR coverage for annual travel insurance plans . Additionally, C&F is widely praised for its customer service, offering quick reimbursements for claims. Claims that don't reimburse within 30 days begin to accrue interest at 9% APY.

When it comes to affordability, C&F remains on the lower end of travel insurance costs. Policies for younger solo travelers are generally around 4% of total trip costs, which isn't bad considering average costs for travel insurance is around 4-8% of total trip costs. However, C&F excels at insuring families as children are heavily discounted with the Edge plan and completely free with the Protector plan.

Read our C&F Travel Insured review .

Best Affordable Travel Insurance for Value

Nationwide travel insurance.

Nationwide is a well-rounded alternative to HTH Worldwide Trip Protector Economy. This plan offers solid protection for both travel-related snafus as well as situations that might call for emergency medical and evacuation, making it a good choice for trips where you have cause to worry about potential interruptions or delays. However, it does not offer protection for missed connections or accidental death.

Trawick international travel insurance.

The Trawick Safe Travels Explorer plan has been purchased by more than 36,000 travelers since 2020, and it has great reviews to boot. And no wonder: Trawick offers generous trip delay coverage of up to $2,000 per person, although hopefully you won't need to reach that reimbursement amount because the daily limit is $150.

You'll also be able to rely on a $200 reimbursement per person for lost baggage - one of the higher amounts amongst these affordable plans, although this amount pales in comparison to the baggage loss coverage offered through the best travel credit cards .

Types of Affordable Travel Insurance

Comprehensive coverage.

This type of insurance offers extensive protection, covering everything from medical issues to trip cancellations. While it's more expensive up front, it can save you a lot in the long run.

Medical-Only Coverage

As the name suggests, this policy focuses solely on medical emergencies, dropping trip cancellation coverage and travel inconvenience coverage. It's a cost-effective option for travelers who are primarily concerned about health-related expenses.

Evacuation and Repatriation

In extreme cases where you need to be evacuated due to a medical emergency or a natural disaster, this coverage ensures that you can return home safely without incurring huge costs.

Benefits of Opting for Cheap Travel Insurance

Cost savings.

Cheap travel insurance can significantly reduce your travel expenses, ensuring that you're not overpaying for coverage you might not need.

Adequate Coverage for Less

Just because it's cheap doesn't mean it's lacking. Many affordable policies offer substantial coverage, giving you peace of mind without breaking the bank.

How to Pick The Best Cheap Travel Insurance Plan for You

No single travel insurance plan will meet the needs of every single traveler. By nature, we are diverse and evolving meaning travel insurance should be equally so. Travel insurance for a week-long trip to a big city shouldn't be the same as the coverage for a backpacking expedition in the mountains. A splurge to purchase comprehensive insurance coverage may also be worth it for international ventures or other large expenditures.

In most cases, the cost difference between a basic and comprehensive travel insurance plan isn't as significant as you might think. Regardless, it's generally a good idea to choose a trusted travel insurance provider known for exceptional customer service and coverage. (For this roundup, we looked at traveler reviews shared through the travel insurance aggregator SquareMouth .)

  • Assessing Your Travel Needs: Consider the nature of your trip, the destination, and your own personal needs when choosing a policy. This ensures that you're not over-insured or underinsured.
  • Comparing Different Policies: Don't settle for the first policy you find. Compare different options, looking at their coverage and prices, to find the best fit for your budget and needs.
  • Reading the Fine Print: Always read the terms and conditions carefully to understand what's covered, what's not, and the process for making a claim.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed Cheap Travel Insurance

To determine the best insurance plan for travelers on a budget, we evaluated dozens of products using a hypothetical trip to Australia for a single traveler, age 26, with a total cost of $2,500 for flight, hotel and other incidentals. We then compiled the plans that covered the essentials at the lowest costs.

Of note: All of these plans include COVID-related medical coverage and 24-hour assistance, and pay at least 100% of your trip cost for eligible trip cancellations. None include rental car coverage.

The four winning plans cost between $29 to $74 — significantly below the average cost of comprehensive travel insurance , which can range between 4-8% of total travel expenses, according to the US Travel Insurance Association. But these affordable plans also come with comparably low ceilings for various aspects of coverage such as emergency medical, trip cancellation, or delay — and do not include rental car or " cancel for any reason" (CFAR) protection . So if you think you might need these benefits, it may well be worth upgrading to a comprehensive travel insurance plan for a few more dollars, just for the peace of mind.

Convenience and Flexibility

Each of the plans in this list include 24-hour assistance worldwide from reputable insurance providers. And despite being on the lower end of insurance plans, each of these options includes refunds for up to 100% of your total trip cost for eligible reasons. Each of these plans also includes medical coverage for COVID-related issues that may arise during your travels, which may come in handy as the pandemic continues to evolve worldwide.

Sufficient Coverage in Essential Categories

The cheapest travel insurance plan will rarely cover every scenario that could go awry on your trip. However, each of these plans can at least help you get your money back in the event that your travel is canceled for an eligible reason, and most of them include travel medical insurance if you incur emergency medical bills while traveling. We also factor in what travelers are most concerned about now.

Yes, many affordable policies offer comprehensive coverage suitable for international travel. It's crucial to compare policies and understand your needs. You can find our guide on the best international travel insurance here.

Travel insurance is relatively cheap because it only covers you for a set period of time and the level of coverage you get may not be particularly high. Your premiums will rise with higher coverage limits and add-ons like cancel for any reason coverage . Travel insurance for older travelers can also be quite expensive.

If you just want trip cancellation protection, go with the Aegis Trip Cancellation Plan. For more robust coverage that won't break the bank, consider HTH Worldwide's TripProtector Economy, Trawick's Safe Travels Explorer, or Nationwide's Essentials plan. Families should consider a C&F Travel Insured policy.

Unfortunately, many travel insurance companies that cover pre-existing conditions reserve coverage for its more expensive plans. That said, you'll find some providers that cover pre-existing conditions with their value plan, such as C&F Travel Insured and Berkshire Hathaway .
