tunisia desert tours

Long a popular winter sun destination for Europeans, Tunisia’s resorts and beaches often come with locals leading brightly saddled camels for tourists to ride next to the sea. However, it's easy to plan an even bigger adventure in far more epic surroundings. Head towards Tunisia's other great expanse of sand in the country’s deep south, which fringes the Grand Erg Oriental, an endless expanse of wind-sculpted Saharan dunes.

The Sahara, the word itself often synonymous with the whole concept of a desert, is a landscape of the imagination and one of the great frontiers of adventure travel. With Tunisia's return to the tourism scene , as a good budget alternative to Morocco, now is the perfect time to saddle up.

Douz: the gateway to the Sahara

You could start your visit to the Sahara from almost anywhere in southern Tunisia , but any trip worth your time will funnel through the gateway town of Douz , a modest, low-slung place that only really starts to come to life when the sun begins to dip. On the fringes of Douz is a large palmeraie (palm grove), with acres of green-grey palms providing shady gardens for crops, as well as mountains of dates to give sustenance to desert travellers. Beyond the palms, the desert beckons.

To get to the desert, any of Douz's Saharan tour operators can provide you with options, from an afternoon in the dunes to multi-day camping adventures according to your time and inclination. The biggest decision to make at the start is your mode of transport. If you want to range far and fast, you can get a 4WD with an expert guide who knows all the trails and can mount sand dunes that would leave an amateur struggling with a spade to dig out their vehicle. For short dune raids, quad bikes are also an option. But for both the adventurous and incurable romantic alike, there is no way to get closer to the desert than with a camel.

Camel tours in the Tunisian Sahara

If it's just a taste of the desert that you're after, many locals in Douz will offer you a camel ride on the spot, but you won't get far into the dunes, the best of which start some way from the town. For longer trips that involve camping, allow at least a day to make arrangements with a licensed tour operator – you can contact local agencies like Horizons Deserts Voyages , Sahha Sahara and Nefzaoua Voyages in advance of your trip to confirm arrangements before you arrive in Douz. Double-check what meals and camping equipment (including bedding) is included in the price and just how far your trip will go into the desert: you don’t want to travel all this way to only to have your camel walk a mile past the town limits.

An overnight tour is the most popular option. After some instruction on the best way to mount your camel and stay in the saddle when it rises to its feet (an unexpectedly wobbly experience), you set out after the heat of the day burns off to ride to a campsite. Around four hours of trekking is a typical first day, which is more than enough to pick up the swaying rhythm of your mount and also to anticipate which parts of your body might be sore the next day.

The reward is arriving deep enough into the desert to enjoy the sunset far from civilisation. Camping involves a traditional black woollen Berber tent, but it's even more fun to sleep outside under the dizzying night sky – a million-star hotel, as your guide will gleefully point out.

Dinner is eaten around a campfire. Quite commonly, it will be a simple stew in a pot that can be wrapped in foil and buried to cook in the fire, along with unleavened bread baked in ashes. While dinner cooks, teapots boil on top of the fire, stuffed with gunpowder tea and mint, and a fistful of sugar that would appear shocking if you hadn't just spent half a day burning calories just holding on to your stead.

The next morning, you rise with the sun and strike camp after a simple breakfast and more sweet tea, and head deeper into the Sahara, or if you're on a shorter trip, back towards Douz.

Sanctuary oasis of Ksar Ghilane

A popular destination for shorter desert trips in the Tunisian desert is the oasis of Ksar Ghilane. You could make a serious trek there by camel from Douz in around a week, but those more pressed for time can reach it by sealed road from Douz in a couple of hours (or have your guide from Douz dune-bash it here in a 4WD).

A beautiful palm-green dot holding back enormous waves of sand, Ksar Ghilane has long attracted outside attention, from Roman legionaries on the outposts of empire to military manoeuvres during World War II. Today it's rather more peaceful, with campsites of traditional Berber tents pitched under palm trees huddled around the fresh springs at its centre. Camels, of course, are available to take you into the dunes, as well as a stable of fine Arab horses and rather noisier quad bikes.

Timing your trip

It's vital to pick the right time of year to visit the Tunisian Sahara. The optimal months are between October and May when the daytime temperatures are at their best. The later you travel during this period, the hotter things will get – you are visiting a desert after all – but the lightest showers of spring rain can generate pretty carpets of short-blooming flowers.

In December and January, nights can be cold and can even approach freezing, so be sure to pack warm clothes and make sure your tour operator has plenty of blankets.

From June to September, the scorching summer sun makes Saharan travel unbearable. Many local tour companies in Douz usually shut up shop during this period, and camels are turned loose to forage for themselves until the cooler weather starts to return.

Packing for the desert

The Saharan sun can be unrelenting no matter the calendar, so do as the Berbers do and cover up when you're out on your adventure. A brimmed hat and high-factor sunscreen are both essential, along with a loose scarf to cover yourself against dusty winds. Long sleeves and trousers are ideal; hours in the saddle can easily chafe. Bring something warm for the end of the day, as desert nights can be surprisingly cold. Your guides should bring plenty of water – always double check this and carry your own bottle in your daypack. Dried fruits and nuts for energy when you're the saddle are a good idea, and the markets in Douz can keep you supplied, along with plenty of locally produced dates.

Camel ride caravan on the red sand of the Sahara desert, Tunisia

Straddling Africa and the Middle East, this once-overlooked Mediterranean gem is well and truly back on the map

From the sun-drenched beaches of the north to the lunar-like desert of the south – and all the caves, mountains and palm-fringed oases in between – Tunisia has a unique allure. It’s not often you can clock Roman ruins this grand, get lost in a maze of medinas and learn age-old pastry recipes with a beloved local baker in their home. Many people think of Tunisia as a seaside holiday destination, and while its glittering Mediterranean beaches are definitely something to write home about, there’s so much more to discover in this diverse country.

Learn more about Tunisia

Best time to visit tunisia.

Tunisia boasts a Mediterranean climate in the north and an arid, desert-like climate in the south. The busiest months are July and August when the hot weather draws tourists to the beaches.

The coldest and wettest months are January and February, although the average rainfall for this period is still relatively low; many interior Saharan regions of Tunisia don't see rainfall for years.

March to May is a great time to visit as it's less crowded, the temperatures are cooler and the scenery is spectacular. November is considered the optimal time for trekking in the desert.

You may also want to factor in the holy month of Ramadan (the dates of which change yearly). Traveling during Ramadan presents benefits and challenges as many restaurants close and business hours can be interrupted. That said, it's a great opportunity to learn about the local culture and customs.

Culture and customs

Tunisia is an Arabic country with a strong sense of history and tradition, yet a good dose of modernity. The overwhelming majority are Arabic-speaking Muslims; nine in ten Tunisians are Amazigh (Berber), with the remainder a mix of European, African and Arab peoples.

These days social and political life in Tunisia is mostly secular. Since the Arab Spring – a region-wide revolutionary movement sparked in 2010 by the Tunisian Revolution – the Tunisians have enjoyed more religious and social freedom and greater democracy. Still, when traveling, it’s important to keep in mind the country’s Islamic culture. If Ramadan is on, be careful not to drink or smoke in the public presence of those practicing it.

Family is an important part of Tunisian life and a good topic of conversation when meeting new acquaintances. Wearing a headscarf is not necessary for women traveling in Tunisia (unless visiting mosques), but it pays to dress conservatively. Language-wise, French and Arabic are the officials, but English is increasingly prevalent – children are nowadays taught it at school.

Eating and drinking

Tunisian cuisine is a mix of Mediterranean, French, Italian, Turkish and Amazigh (Berber) influences. Seafood is popular in coastal areas in the north, while hearty regional classics like shakshouka (baked eggs in tomato) are common all over.

Two major staples of Tunisian cuisine are harissa (a spicy chili paste made with coriander and caraway seeds) and couscous (buttery semolina granules) which are also popular in neighboring countries like Morocco.

Must-try foods in Tunisia

Translating to couscous, this is Tunisia's national dish. The Amazigh people are thought to have created it as far back as the 3rd century. A simple yet delicious plate of seasoned couscous is usually accompanied by baked vegetables and chickpeas, or by beef, lamb or chicken.

2. Brik pastry

Brik, or 'brick', pastry comes in sweet and savory forms, but you'll likely stumble on the egg and meat-filled kind first. Though its name may suggest otherwise, the dough is relatively thin and delicate. You'll find this snack at street stalls across the country.

Not to be confused with the Moroccan version (that’s very different), Tunisian tajine is similar to a quiche or frittata – more of a European-style finger food. Typical ingredients are onions, spices and ground meat, all held together with egg and breadcrumbs and flavored with herbs and spices.

A fantastic option for vegetarians, lablabi is a hearty chickpea soup with liberal doses of cumin and coriander. Tuna or egg are sometimes added for extra punch, and some harissa doesn’t go astray. Capers or chopped almonds sometimes top the dish off.

5. Bambalouni (Tunisian doughnut)

Sweet toothed-travelers shouldn’t miss the ‘yo-yo’, also known as a bambalouni, or simply Tunisian doughnut. Deep fried, but with the subtlety of so many other sweets from the region, it’s often lightly flavored by rose water, orange blossom or lemon.

Geography and environment

Sandwiched between Libya and Algeria, Tunisia benefits from its location on the Mediterranean Coast. The south is characterized by arid plains and desert, which give way to rolling hills and fertile areas prime for cultivation in the north.

With a coastline along the Mediterranean Sea, Tunisia has plenty of white sand beaches that are popular with swimmers, surfers and divers. Tunisia's capital and largest city, Tunis, is mostly modern in design, except for the old medieval medina in the middle of town.

Tunisia is a treat for those who love to haggle the North African way. The country has many souqs and medinas where you can get a great price on local and authentic items. Shop for endemic spices, blown-glass perfume bottles, traditional ceramics and more.

You may like to purchase a Tunisian rug, which will be truly evocative of your stay in the region. Kairouan is a particularly good place to shop for a rug. Just look out for the ONAT (Office National de l’Artisanat Tunisien) stamp of approval on the back of your rug before you buy it to ensure it’s authentic.

A traditional Arabic shisha, also known as a hookah, is also worth considering as a souvenir. It’s the apparatus used to smoke the characteristic flavored tobacco of the Middle East . It’s not for everyone, of course, but travelers are known to buy them for their aesthetic qualities alone.

Festivals and events

International festival of sousse.

This three-week festival brings together a miscellanea of arts from across the country. See performances, eat African cuisine and enjoy the biggest carnival parade in Africa .

Festival of the Sahara

Held in Douz in the heart of the namesake desert, Festival of the Sahara started as a Bedouin marriage market but became a full-blown celebration of arts, culture and sports in the region. There’s delicious food, military parades, greyhound racing and much more.

Ulysses Festival

The legendary Greek king Ulysses is said to have immortalized the island of Djerba when he visited thousands of years ago. The island hosts this festival every year with cultural events and performances from across the Mediterranean.

Your Ultimate Guide To The Desert in Tunisia - The Sahara You want To Explore

  • Adventure Travel

Meryem

Tunisian sahara is a true gem. A visit to these areas gives an experience like no other. In the center of the Sahara, you can find chotts, hot springs and oasis and indulge in hiking activities and cultural tours.

Wildyness guides you to recommend some activities and places you need to mark in your plan.

Visit Nefta, Douz and The Oasis of Chebika

Explore douz .

The Douz region provides one of the most peaceful approaches to the desert, with its delicate white mantle evoking a scene blanketed in snow. The highways that the sand gradually reclaims are surrounded by elegant bouquets of palm trees and dunes. The huge, golden desert is right here, and the palm trees nearby provide delicious resting spots in the shade of date palm groves.

Discover the Other Side of the South

Tozeur and Nefta, towns that emerge from the desert and are forced up against enormous palm trees, astound, enchant, are able to immerse tourists in an incredible setting. Between the tall façades and golden-colored brickwork in the old quarters' winding streets, the blazing light of the Sahara shines. Around the ancient town of Tozeur, palaces, theme parks, and museums have flourished. Numerous domes in Nefta point to saints' tombs that are situated above an oasis that is contained within a basin known as the Basket. The Saharan dune system is only a few kilometers distant.

Get Lost in a Tunisian Oasis

Time to explore the Oasis of Chebika. Located near the Djebel el Negueb mountains and in an area with a small population, the Oasis offers you the slow and quiet moments you need to disconnect, detox and relax.

Once serving the Romans as an outpost and Amazigh as a refuge, the Oasis has a unique landscape combining a rocky mountain, a crystal blue river and green palms. Hike toward the mountain so you can enjoy the view of all of this as well as Chott Jerid, a salt pan.

Visit Old Movies Sites

The abandoned movie set known as Mos Espa was built to represent a desolate spaceport in a  far away galaxy. It is located between two salt lakes, the massive Chott El Djerid and the smaller Chott El Gharsa. If you're a fan of Star Wars, Mos Espa is a "must-see" because of the fantastical scenery and compelling otherworldly constructions.

Even if you're not a fan of the movies, it's still a fantastic visit. You don’t always have the opportunity to visit an abandoned film site left intact.

Movies and Mos Epsa

Mos Epsa, one of the main spaceports in Star Wars, is shown in the films as a lively town filled with the everyday activities of many aliens from throughout the galaxy. We are informed in the film that the site is on a far-off planet known as Tatooine, which served as home to hero Anakin Skywalker from Episodes I, II, and III. The planet was named after the Tunisian town, Tatouine.

Lars Homestead

One of several ancient Tunisian relics from a distant galaxy is Lars Homestead. The inconspicuous building served as the original movie set for hero Luke Skywalker's house, who served as the series' major protagonist in later episodes as well as the original Star Wars film trilogy.

Lars Homestead and Movies

For all Star Wars buffs, the tiny dome, which can be found in the Eastern region not far from the town of Nefta, is an amazing residence abandoned in the middle of the desert after the Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope film team arrived in Tunisia in 1976.

Spend a night at Camp Mars

Climb a dune in the heart of the Sahara and watch a stunning sunset over the crimson sands. Seize the magic of the sahara to the fullest by gazing at the star-filled sky after a fantastic meal with your folks. This dream-like night is what you need not only to spice up your journey but also to make your trip memorable and immersive.

In the morning, get up early to capture the sun’s rays as they emerge from behind the sand dunes and usher in yet another sweltering Sahara Desert day. Explore the world on a camelback, a 4x4 or quad bike, or test your sandboarding prowess.

authentic dinner in the sahara tunisia

Take a Camel Trekking Tour

Once you hop a camel, you will sense the power of the vastness of the unforgiving landscape, the sand's ever-changing colors, and the extreme quiet. Overpowering, yet calming. Usually, you will find dromedaries and not camels as none of them are two-humped. If you’re uncomfortable with riding a camel, you need to check your tour operators and ask them the questions you need answers for before making your decision. Besides this, you can expect an amazing immersive experience where you live back the days when north africans made strong bonds with camels culminating in more than 5000 years of domestication.

Visit the Viewpoint of Sidi Bouhlel

From Tozeur, head to Deguech governorate to visit Bouhlel canyons . This less-known destination will take you back in time where the large orange landscape and slow life reign. In a deserted alley lies two marbouts Sidi Bouhlel and Sidi Ben Abess, who were both saint men who taught religion and spirituality to their people. If you have enough time, a hike is a great activity to do to explore this filming site where Goerge Lucas and Anthony Minghella filmed some scenes for their movies Star Wars and English Patient. Those who are into geology and paleontology, this is a must-go place.

bouhlel hike

Visit Chott Jerid

Sebkha or Sabkha is an Arabic word denoting a salt ban. Chott Jerid is one of the most famous sabkha in Tunisia and it’s deemed to be the largest salt lake in Africa. Dominated by the Saharan Atlas mountain range, Chott Jerid is located in a very interesting geographical location between the algerian borders and the gulf of Gabes. Here, you can enjoy the landscape while you gaze over this salty landscape with its mirages above the horizon.

djerid experience

Visit Troglodyte Houses of Matmata, Tamezret and Toujane

Matmata lies near the city of Gabes, close to the Sahara desert and the Dahar Mountains. It was used as a backdrop for Star Wars. Star Wars fans will surely enjoy visiting the Sidi Driss hotel, used as Luke Skywalker’s home, which still welcomes guests today. The hotel has multiple props used in the film as well as photographs of George Lucas, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford on display.

The troglodyte village of Matmata is located in the Gabès Governorate near the Sahara and the chain of Dahar mountains. While urbanization has touched the new Matmata, the village continues to exist and indigenous tribes still live in there maintaining many aspects of their authentic lifestyle. As one of the most famous berber villages, Matmata has buildings built within the mountain and connected via passageways and courtyards.

Unlike Matmamta, Tamezret, our next destination, is largely abandoned, and its stone cottages are in disrepair. In the village, there is a Berber Museum that tells the story of the village, its tradition and its contribution in the country’s independence.

After Matmamta and Tamezret, it’s time to explore Toujane and get the most of your Amazigh experience . Toujane hosts one of the most unique troglodyte houses with underground buildings and sandy colors.

In these troglodyte houses, make sure to combine your visit with a hike.

Explore Midès Canyons

It is essential to visit the Midès Canyons to say confidently: “I visited a hidden gem in Tunisia”.

This village is one of Tunisia's most stunning highland oases and hosts a breathtaking gorge that spans for three kilometers. The spherical forms and striking color contrasts of the throat make it stand out. One can see millions-old fossils and colorful minerals in these gorges with desert landscapes.

Historically speaking, the old Midès, which is situated on the Saharan lines that connect Tebessa to Gafsa, was utilized by the Romans to employ mirrors to warn of approaching invaders.

It is roughly sixty kilometers from Tozeur and ten kilometers from Tamerza away from the Tunisian-Algerian border.

Relax for One Day in a Traditional Guesthouse

Visiting the Sahara can be hectic and daunting. There are some venues en-route to the desert where you can stay, take a deep breath and take a rest. Guesthouses are a great option for travelers who want to seize the opportunity to mingle with locals, explore authentic gastronomy and contribute to the local economy.

Depending on where you want to take this day off, you can opt for Hotel Sidi Driss, Dar Abou Habibi, Dar Hi, and more.

Try the Traditional Sahara Food

Mbakbka with meat.

Mbkaba with meat is one of the famous foods in South Tunisia. Usually prepared by singles and men who spend nights in the middle of the desert,  it is quick to prepare and has many nutritional benefits, because it contains starches, proteins and other important nutrients. If you’re a vegetarian, you can have mbakbka with veggies.

Mtabga

One of the must eat sahara foods is mtabga. Mtabga is the tunisian version of pizza or pancake.  As an authentic and traditional food, it’s always home made and prepared according to the original recipes. It is made out of semolina and stuffed with onion, tomatoes, harissa and sometimes meat fat.

Make sure to communicate your preferences in terms of spiciness.

Chakhchouka

Chakhchouka and chakchouka are sometimes taken to be the same dish. But, they are not. - Chakchouka is a kind of vegetable-based ratatouille. Chakhchoukha is a typical  dish prepared in Nefta. It is made from semolina dough cooked in a pan and cut into small pieces, served with meat from lamb, broad beans and chickpeas, all drizzled with tomato sauce.

Frequently Asked Questions about Tunisian Sahara

When is the best time to visit tunisia desert.

The best seasons to visit the Sahara are spring, fall or winter for the most bearable temperatures. By choosing the winter month, you need to be sure about bearing the chilly nighttime temperatures that you can experience outside in December and January. In Summer (from June to August), you don’t want to feel the high summer heat where temperatures can reach 40 to 45 degrees. The ideal period is the months from October to May.

How to Get to the Tunisia Desert?

There is no direct connection from Tunis to the desert. But, Douz can serve as a great starting point for all meaningful excursions into the desert, despite the fact that the Sahara can be reached from virtually anyplace in southern Tunisia.

Douz, the Sahara's Entrance

The Sahara Desert is beyond the shaded palm palms that surround the village of Douz. Before heading into the desert, one can acquire fruit and nuts, especially dates, which will provide much-needed sustenance.

Coming to Douz from Other Nations

Tozeur-Nefta International Airport is a nice choice for tourists flying into Tunisia from abroad. A shared minibus taxi called a "louage" can take you from here to Douz; the trip takes around two hours.

Arriving at Douz from another Tunisian location

There are various local transportation alternatives accessible for those traveling to the Sahara from elsewhere in Tunisia, including train, bus, louage, and taxi. Visitors should research their best options based on where they are departing from.

What to Pack for Tunisia Desert?

Comfortable clothes

Comfortable shoes - avoid sandals

A heavier jacket - depending on the season

A hat - for sun and humidity

A long scarf - in case there is wind, or you feel you need to cover more skin

Flashlight - useful for toilet trips or nighttime dune climbing. Usually, there is a shared restroom next to the camp area at the less expensive sites.

Power bank - access to energy is limited. You will need your phone even though 3G or 4G is not that solid in the desert camps so you may take pictures or use it as a flashlight.

Sunscreen - the sun can be very strong even in the winter. Before the camel ride or your tour in the sahara, apply sunscreen or make sure your face is covered with a scarf.

Sufficient water to drink (at least 2 liters each).

Wet wipes to clean up and get rid of sand before bed.

The bump or runner’s belt- a very handy accessory anywhere you go. Put your money and phone in there so you can move easily and do physician activities smoothly.

Tunisian Desert, a Great Choice for an Immersive Experience

Tunisia is a wonderfully amazing location to explore with its vivid colors, cacophony of sounds, mild sun, the aromas of the spice markets, and countless of exotic sights. This exceptional North African nation blends a breathtaking natural environment with distinctive architecture, a vibrant culture, and warm-hearted inhabitants. It is now more understandable why Tunisian desert excursions are a well-liked travel choice. From Tozeur to Matmata, you can explore hidden gems while traveling back in time where life is slow and calm.

Tunisia Discovery, Small Group Tour

The tour was very interesting and versatile, well organized

Highlights of Tunisia, Small Group Tour Tour

Highlights of Tunisia, Small Group Tour

Tour covered several cities and towns. It was an excellent way to see Tunisia for 5 days. Our guide spoke English well and offered rich historical facts. I loved every day with our guide and the itinerary was perfectly designed. There were some problems and poor performances. Our guide was late on the first day of touring. Day one should have began at 12 noon, we should have had a tour of Tunis on day one. I contacted TourRadar weeks in advance of our arrival to say we were arriving a day earlier and that we wanted to maximize our first day of touring. TourRadar assured me that our guide would meet us in Tunis at noon on day one and provide a tour. However, a driver appeared at out hotel in the center if Tunis, driver spoke no English and we got in the 10 passenger van. The van was dusty and smelled of cigarette smoke. The van was not clean and dirt and dust remained in the interior for all five days. On day one, the driver drove us to another city and dropped us off at the hotel. TourRadar did not explain anything to us. I contacted TourRadar to complain and they seemed clueless why our tour and guide did not show up for the day one tour as described in the itinerary. The guide was supposed to arrive at the first hotel at 4pm on day one, but arrived an hour late and said he was waiting for us. I was in the lobby at 4pm exactly and no one called my room, where my partner waited for an hour for s call.

Tunisia is a fantastic collection of culture, architectural sites and filled with history. I was alone on this tour adding some flexibility but also complications. I do recommend Tunisia, you won’t be disappointed.

The tour guide was knowledgeable and on time for everything. However, the printed itinerary did not match where the guide took us or in the same order. Fortunately, the guide took us to a place not on the itinerary -- the Hotel Sidi Idriss, where the first Star Wars movie was filmed -- and that was fantastic. It was a great surprise to stop there, although it shouldn't have been a surprise and should have been on the itinerary. Also, at some points the guide, who also served as the driver, seemed like he'd done the tour a million times and was a bit bored.

Tunisia: Relaxed Experience

What people love about fully guided tours in tunisia.

Good tour covering key attractions in Tunisia. Could have been excellent if Tatouine (Yes, it is a real place in Tunisia and inspired George Lucas to use that name in Star Wars!) were included in the itinerary as it has very unique buildings (warehouses) that warrant a visit. There are gaps in the program especially the first day that could accommodate this attraction with some juggling.
Overall excellent, with all the elements that make a successful tour: *Strong itinerary with good timing and efficient transits. Covered all important sites. *Itinerary delivered exactly as listed with all the inclusions clear *Very knowledgeable and personable guide and great driver, always on time and helpful *Hotels and meals were good and varied

In the desert Mineral Water and soft drinks are available.

What's a Bivouac?

The bivouac is a rudimentary camp that we set up in the middle of the desert and that will allow us to spend the night under the stars or in tents.

The concept consists in setting up the tent or camp without shelter in the evening at sunset and leaving in the morning.
