Profiles & Route UAE Tour 2023 - Stage Analysis

For several years now the UAE Tour has proven to be one of the biggest early-season tests for the peloton. A World Tour race, it will be taking place from the 20th to the 26th of February and as every year it will feature a star-studded field of climbers and sprinters.

The race will consist of seven stages this year. Four of them will be pan-flat and perfect opportunities for the sprinters who will have plenty chances to fight for a prestigious win. Stage two will be a team time-trial, as the discipline re-emerges in 2023, and stages three and seven (the final day) will have summit finishes in the traditional climbs of the Jebel Jais and Jebel Hafeet.

Estimated start and finish times for UAE Tour, CET time:

Stage 1: 10.00 - 13:00CET

Stage 2: 08:00 - 12:30CET

Stage 3: 08:45 - 13:30CET

Stage 4: 09:30 - 13:30CET

Stage 5: 09:35 - 13:30CET

Stage 6: 09:40 - 13:30CET

Stage 7: 09:45 - 13:30CET

Profiles & Route UAE Tour 2023 - Stage Analysis

Stage one from Al Dhafra Castle to Al Mirfa is 151 kilometers long and will be a completely flat day. It will be a day virtually in the desert, with no climbs or changes of landscape throughout the day. The flat plains will lead the riders into the final town of Al Mirfa by the sea.

The finale will be more technical than all others throughout the race. Although it is unsure how small, the finish straight will be quite short as the riders go back and forth through the same road - on opposite directions - in the final kilometers. A right-hander will be present shortly after the finish line, meaning a battle for that corner between the leadouts and the sprinters will take place before the final punch.

Profiles & Route UAE Tour 2023 - Stage Analysis

Stage two will see the riders race a team time-trial. In 17.2 kilometers at Khalifa Port, teams will face each other in a day where the overall classification will take relative importance. The race will fully be within the port's roads, going back and forth in the area. There will then be plenty of changes of direction, but with no technical or tight sections, aswell as any gradients, it will be a day where the most organized teams will without a doubt benefit from.

PREVIEW | UAE Tour 2023 stage 2 - Team time-trial to create further damage in GC fight

Profiles & Route UAE Tour 2023 - Stage Analysis

Stage three will see another battle for the overall classification. This one will be a flat day into Jebel Jais, not pan-flat as most of the previous ones as the riders climb around 500 meters of altitude within the opening kilometers, but without any meaningful climb. The riders will head north towards the mountains close to the Strait of Hormuz. There they will find a very twisty mountain road.

That is of Jebel Jais, a climb that has begun being used quite often in the last editions of the race, earning it's spot as the second summit finish after the UAE Tour cemented Jebel Hafeet as it's main attraction. This climb is a totally different beast however, as the gradients are constant and never overly high. The gradients start off quite gently, but in total the climb has over 21 kilometers in distance, averaging 5.4%.

And amazingly the gradients remain almost completely constant the whole way up the mountain. It reaches up to 7% towards the finale, but it's an ascent where the average speeds stay close to 30 kilometers per hour. Drafting is crucial, and attacking from far highly unlikely to succeed. Although it's a twisty road all of the hairpins are very long and don't actually allow for sudden accelerations to surprise. The final minutes of the ascent can make differences however as it's a decently long effort, and there will be important signs given between the riders who are fighting for the overall classification.

PREVIEW | UAE Tour 2023 stage 3 - 21-kilometer long Jebel Jais promises climbing showdown

Profiles & Route UAE Tour 2023 - Stage Analysis

Stage four sees the riders back into purely flat roads for another bunch sprint. It's another pan-flat day, just as the race usually delivers, and a reason why so many sprinters come down to the UAE. This one particularly rolls into Dubai, where the finale will specifically be at the Dubai Harbour.

It's far from a technical finale, as the riders make their way through the desert's urbanization. There will be a long right-hander with 800 meters to go leaving the riders in the finishing straight. It's a simple finish, leadouts will have only their power and strategy to blame if the plan doesn't work.

PREVIEW | UAE Tour 2023 stage 4 - Bunch sprint in Dubai awaits the peloton

Profiles & Route UAE Tour 2023 - Stage Analysis

Stage five will be a similar day to the previous sprint days. The race organizers have created a route passing through the cities of the area, with plenty changes in direction over 182 kilometers to end in a city similar to all the other finishes, in Umm al Quwain.

And from the sprint all that can be expected is high speeds. There will be two roundabouts to take into consideration, with 1 and 2.5 kilometers to go respectively. Nevertheless it's a fully straightforward finale, ideal for the pure sprinters.

PREVIEW | UAE Tour 2023 stage 5 - Round 3 for pure sprinters

Profiles & Route UAE Tour 2023 - Stage Analysis

Stage six will be another opportunity for the fast men, and the final one. This time around the peloton will be racing around the cities in Abu Dhabi, in a fourth day that features no climbing whatsoever and delivers the sprinters another well deserved opportunity to succeed.

The finale here into Doha is not unknown and it's a fairly simple one. No technical features at all are included within the final 1.5 kilometers, it's a simple and straight finale where the leadouts will be raising the speed in incredibly high fashion before the fast men launch their bid for victory.

PREVIEW | UAE Tour 2023 stage 6 - Sprinters have on final opportunity in Abu Dhabi

Profiles & Route UAE Tour 2023 - Stage Analysis

At last the riders face a climb. After three days of no climbing whatsoever, they will have a fourth day of racing in such roads, but will encounter the second and final mountaintop finish of the race. The queen stage, it will be the ascent to Jebel Hafeet - 10.8 kilometers at 6.6% - that will decide the race.

Aside from winds there is nothing to fear from the day. It's a short day on the bike with only 153 kilometers on the menu, but the final ascent dictates this to be the queen stage most likely. The numbers aren't brutal, but very often very big differences are created in the slopes of Jebel Hafeet. 10.8 kilometers at 6.6% are the official details, but the gradients aren't as consistent as Jebel Jais.

In it's middle 7 kilometers the grades average 8% consistently, reaching as high as 11% with some steep hairpins included. Usually the main moves happen there, in what is a wide, completely exposed road which adds to the difficulty. The final kilometers have a couple of flat and even downhill sections, with some steep ramps inbetween. The final sprint will be uphill, although the late final corner has in the past seen crashes so caution must be had.

PREVIEW | UAE Tour 2023 stage 7 - Remco Evenepoel in pole position ahead of queen stage to Jebel Hafeet

UAE Tour 2023 Route stage 4: Dubai – Dubai

Al Shindagha lies 35 kilometres north of Dubai Harbour. Most of the race takes place inside Dubai city, although the riders leave the metropolitan area to enter the Qudra Cycle Track after 40 kilometres.

After an out-and-back trip in the Qudra Desert the riders return to Dubai. With 37 kilometres to go they are very near the line, but the finish only happens after a lap on Palm Jumeira and a 12 kilometres journey up and down King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street.

The UAE Tour had its fair share of Dubai finishes, but never in Dubai Harbour. It is a new seafront district between The Palm Jumeirah and Bluewaters Island.

The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprints come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.

'We can’t wait to get it started' – Tadej Pogačar's Giro d'Italia support squad unveiled

UAE Team Emirates name Majka, Bjerg, Novak among key domestiques for Slovenian superstar

Domen Novak leads Tadej Pogačar at the Volta a Catalunya – the pair reunite in UAE Team Emirates' Giro d'Italia squad

UAE Team Emirates have confirmed the roster that will support Tadej Pogačar for his debut at the upcoming Giro d’Italia .

The eight-man roster features a split between those primed to ride in the mountains for the Slovenian’s GC ambitions and a small sprinting core for Juan Sebastián Molano to chase stages.

Pogačar is expected to dominate the 21 days of racing from start to finish with the punchy opening stage on Saturday in Turin offering the chance to carry the maglia rosa right the way through to the conclusion in Rome.

Despite his heavy favourite status, no rider can make it through a Grand Tour alone so UAE Team Emirates have put together a squad with some of the most loyal domestiques from his young but illustrious career.

Giro d'Italia 2024 – The comprehensive team guide Giro d’Italia 2024 - Analysing the contenders ‘This is Team UAE Emirates, not Team Pogi’ - Behind the scenes of Tadej Pogačar's Giro-Tour double bid Tadej Pogačar can dominate the Giro d’Italia but nobody can control its chaos – Analysis

Rafał Majka, Mikkel Bjerg, Felix Großschartner and Domen Novak will form the mountain train that should launch Pogačar on the key climbs, while Vegard Stake Laengen, Rui Oliveira and Juan Sebastian Molano will both work on the flat to chase breaks and contest the bunch sprints.

“The preparation for the Giro has gone really well. I haven’t raced too much so far this year, just 10 days, so I’m feeling fresh and ready to take on my first Giro. It’s a race I’ve dreamed of doing for a long time and it feels like now that the time is right to go for it,” said Pogačar.

“I raced in Italy a lot as an amateur and it has been an important country in my journey as a cyclist. For sure it is one of my favourite places to ride a bike and I also love the culture and of course the food. I hope we can make this month a special one.

“Obviously my aim is to go for the GC and we also have Molano for the sprints and a very solid team in general. We can’t wait to get it started.”

Majka, Bjerg and Stake Laengen have been present throughout Pogačar’s first few Grand Tours as key lieutenants on the road but making his first start at a three-week race with the Slovenian star will be compatriot Novak.

The 28-year-old joined UAE from Bahrain Victorious in 2023 and has proved a huge pickup. Throughout both the Volta a Catalunya and Liège-Bastogne-Liège , Novak was the strongest domestique at Pogačar’s disposal and will look to carry such from into Italy.

While Molano and Oliveira will be put to work on the flat, and are certainly capable, their focus will be on the six or seven sprint opportunities that present themselves on the route.

The Colombian sprinter is yet to take a win this season but took three at WorldTour level in 2023, the best of which was in tandem with Oliveira after the Portuguese lead-out man piloted Molano to a stage 12 win at last year’s Vuelta a España . So expect to see them challenging the likes of Tim Merlier (Soudal-QuickStep) and Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) in the fast finishes.

Giro d'Italia 2024: Preview, full schedule and how to watch live

Tadej Pogacar is chasing his first Giro d'Italia title

The Giro d’Italia 2024 is about to kick off the Grand Tour season in men’s road cycling .

On Saturday 4 May, Venaria Reale will host the opening stage of the 107 th edition of the Corsa Rosa that will see its conclusion three weeks later in Rome on Sunday 26 May.

All eyes will be on the Slovenian superstar Tadej Pogacar , who aims to become the first rider since Marco Pantani in 1998 to achieve the Giro-Tour double.

Reigning champion and Olympic time trial gold medallist, Primoz Roglic , will not be defending his crown, as he has got his eyes set on the Tour de France.

The 2024 edition of the Italian Grand Tour features gruelling mountain stages in the Alps, gravel roads in Tuscany and more than 70 kilometres of time trial. The winner will lift the prestigious Trofeo Senza Fine (Endless Trophy) and wear the coveted Maglia Rosa in the Italian capital.

This year's race will cover a total of 3400.8 kilometres , making it the shortest edition in 45 years.

Find everything you need to know about the Giro d’Italia 2024 below, including the riders to look out for and how to watch the event live.

  • Liege-Bastogne-Liege 2024: Tadej Pogacar powers to second victory
  • Jambaljamts Sainbayar: From braving Ulaanbaatar's freezing roads to making history for Mongolian cycling

Who are the riders to watch at the Giro d’Italia 2024?

Pink jersey (general classification).

There is one overwhelming favourite for the Giro d’Italia 2024, and that is Tadej Pogacar .

Fresh off his second Liège–Bastogne–Liège title in impressive fashion, the two-time Tour de France winner is arriving to Italy in top shape.

Pogacar started his season by conquering the gravel roads of Strade Bianche , riding 81 kilometres solo to claim victory in Siena.

At Volta a Catalunya , the Slovenian swept four out of seven stages, securing the overall victory and sending a clear message to his rivals at the Giro about who the man to beat is.

Geraint Thomas suffered heartbreak at last year’s Giro d’italia, narrowly missing out on the overall victory by just 14 seconds.

The 2018 Tour de France champion was leading the race going into the penultimate stage, only to relinquish the pink jersey to Primoz Roglic after the Slovenian's formidable performance in the individual time trial.

The INEOS Grenadiers leader has some unfinished business with the Corsa Rosa and will try to pose a challenge to Pogacar.

Among the outsiders is Australia's Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R), who finished fourth in the 2021 Tour de France.

This year, the 28-year-old has consistently finished within the top five in week-long stage races. At the Giro d'Italia warm-up race, the Tour of the Alps, he was the runner-up behind the former Maglia Rosa wearer Juan Pedro Lopez , who also will be lining up at the start line in Venaria Reale.

French veteran Romain Bardet recently said that he is at his best level in years and is convinced he can challenge for the podium.

A second place at the Liège–Bastogne–Liège behind Pogacar was a boost of morale for the 33-year-old, who has not been on a Grand Tour podium since 2018, when he finished third at the Tour de France.

Daniel Martínez will lead the BORA - hansgrohe team. The Colombian climber is no longer in the shadow of INEOS stars Geraint Thomas and Egan Bernal , following his move to the German team ahead of this season.

In 2021, Martínez was a strong domestique for compatriot Bernal and helped him secure the overall victory. He also achieved his best overall result in a Grand Tour by finishing in the top five that year. With the absence of teammate Roglic, it is up to Martínez to secure a top result.

“The Killer Bees” Team Visma|Lease a Bike made history in 2023, becoming the first team to claim all three Grand Tours in a single year. Although a repetition of the historic achievement looks difficult, the Dutch team have put their faith in 21-year-old prodigy Cian Uijtdebroeks .

The Belgian has been under the wings of reigning Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard at the O Gran Camiño and Tirreno-Adriatico. Now he faces the ultimate test as Grand Tour captain.

Cyclamen jersey (points classification)

This year’s course is more sprinter-friendly than usual, featuring eight expected mass sprint finishes. Jonathan Milan of Lidl-Trek will aim to defend the maglia ciclamino (mauve jersey for the points classification) that he secured last year.

However, he will face a fierce competition for the mauve jersey as several of the world's top sprinters will travel to Italy.

Soudal Quick-Step will fully support Remco Evenepoel at the Tour de France, giving Tim Merlier the opportunity to pursue success at the Giro.

The Belgian has been one of the fastest sprinters during the first part of the season, winning three stages at the UAE Tour, the Nokere Koerse, and the sprinters’ classic Scheldeprijs.

Another challenge will come from Australian Kaden Groves . In 2023, the Alpecin-Deceuninck rider added stage wins at both the Giro and the Vuelta a España, where he also left with the green jersey.

Biniam Girmay will be back on Italian soil, where he outsprinted Mathieu van der Poel in the Giro two years ago to take his first Grand Tour stage victory. The Eritrean looks to be close to his form from 2022.

Dutch sprinter Olav Kooij will finally get his Grand Tour debut. The 22-year-old beat Mads Pedersen twice to claim two stage wins at the Paris-Nice in March and is one of the most promising sprinters in the peloton.

Five-time Vuelta a España stage winner Fabio Jakobsen is set to race his first Giro and can complete the set of Grand Tour wins, having already secured a stage victory at the Tour de France in 2022.

Will Filippo Ganna sprint for stage wins again? The Italian time trial specialist was fighting in the bunch sprints at last year’s Vuelta a España and showed a new side of his talent.

Despite not having shone in the last couple of years, Caleb Ewan and Fernando Gaviria are both multiple Grand Tour stage winners and they have the power to be competitive in the bunch sprints.

Blue jersey (mountains classification)

Unlike in the Tour de France, the winner of the mountains classification in the Giro d’Italia is usually not the same as the winner of the general classification.

Thibaut Pinot , who has since retired, clinched the blue jersey in the previous edition while finishing fifth overall.

However, the breakaway riders often view for the mountains classification.

A potential contender is Simon Geschke of Cofidis. The German rider was close to seal the polka dot jersey at the Tour de France in 2022, but ultimately Jonas Vingegaard ended up with both the yellow and polka dot jersey.

Other names to watch are Britain's Simon Carr , who just won a stage and the mountains classification at the Tour of the Alps, and Dutchman Koen Bouwman , who is aiming for his second blue jersey after claiming it in 2022.

Key stages of the Giro d’Italia 2024

Five stages are singled out by cycling experts as the most decisive for the Giro d'Italia 2024.

The first one arrives already on stage two , which is the earliest summit finish in 35 years. It is a true climbing test, which takes the peloton to Santuario di Oropa (6.2% over 11.8km) and will give an early indication of who will be the main general classification contenders.

A 40.6-kilometre time trial awaits the peloton on stage seven . The course is technical and the uphill finish should shake up the top ten. Some will see it as an oppornunity to gain time, while others will try to limit their losses.

Stage 15 is the queen stage of the 2024 Giro d’Italia. Containing 5,200 metres of elevation gain over 220 kilometres, it is a brutal day in the mountains. Hopefully, snowfall will not affect this blockbuster Alpine stage.

The riders get a rest day following the queen stage, but already on stage 16 , climbing legs will be tested again. It includes the Passo dello Stelvio , the Cima Coppi of this year’s race. At an elevation of 2,757 metres it is the second highest pass in the Alps.

The lack of oxygen at high altitude will make the peloton suffer. With over 100 kilometres remaining from the summit of Stelvio, the favourites who might fall behind still have the chance to catch up before the final ascents to Passo Pinei and Monte Pana.

Stage 20 , the penultimate stage before the procession around the streets of Rome, promises a decisive battle in the mountains for the final general classification. Two gruelling ascents of Monte Grappa - 18.2 kilometres at 8.1% - will determine who earns the right to wear the pink jersey in Rome and hoist the Endless Trophy .

Cian Uijtdebroeks

Visma-Lease a Bike were one of the last teams to announce their lineup for the Giro d'Italia , and it is a team with mixed ambitions.

The squad which won all three Grand Tours in 2023 heads back to Italy with Cian Uijtdebroeks leading their general classification charge, with Olav Kooij aiming for sprint wins.

The race begins this Saturday, 4 May, in Turin, and all the teams have now been announced.

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) heads to Italy for the start on 4 May in top form after recently winning Liège–Bastogne–Liège for the second time , and is firmly the overwhelming favourite .

Pogačar will be supported by Rafał Majka, Domen Novak, Mikkel Bjerg, Rui Oliveira, Vegard Stake Laengen, Felix Großschartner and Sebastian Molano.

Ben O'Connor will lead Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale, aiming to better his best result at a Grand Tour - fourth at the 2021 Tour de France . A strong team aims to back him up in the mountains.

Meanwhile, Romain Bardet will lead dsm-firmenich PostNL and is one of the riders expected to challenge Pogačar for overall victory.

The Frenchman, who most recently finished second to the UAE Emirates talisman at Liège, will be hoping to best the Slovenian over three weeks in Italy.

He will be supported by a split-strategy team, which also includes Fabio Jakobsen and Tobias Lund Andresen for sprints.

Bora-Hansgrohe also announced their lineup for the Giro on Monday afternoon; the German team will be lead by Dani Martínez. Notable by their absence were Sam Welsford and Emanuel Buchmann, with the latter taking to social media to complain about his non-selection .

In the battle for the pink jersey, O'Connor, Martínez and Bardet will be up against race favourite Pogačar and Geraint Thomas , who is to lead an "aggressive" Ineos Grenadiers team at the race.

The Welshman will be joined by Thymen Arensman, Filippo Ganna , Magnus Sheffield, Tobias Foss , Jhonatan Narvaéz, Ben Swift and Connor Swift for Ineos Grenadiers. Thomas, Foss, and Arensman have all previously finished in the top 10 at the race, while Ganna is a six-time stage winner at his home Grand Tour.

Nairo Quintana (Movistar) will ride his first Grand Tour since 2022 at this year's race, too.

The Colombian, who returned two positive blood samples for the painkiller tramadol in 2022 , spent last season without a team, and returned to Movistar at the start of this year. He will now lead the Spanish team's Giro bid, a decade after he won the Grand Tour himself.

Other teams, like Lidl-Trek and Astana Qazaqstan, have opted to go without a clear pink jersey contender. Lidl-Trek will instead pin their hopes on stage victories, led by promising Italian sprinter Jonathan Milan, while Astana Qazaqstan will take leader Alexey Lutsenko and Lorenzo Fortunato, a former stage winner on the Monte Zoncolan.

Jayco-AlUla, too, are going to Italy with "multiple cards". The Australian team are taking five-time Giro-stage-winning sprinter Caleb Ewan, as well as Irishman Eddie Dunbar, who finished seventh overall last year.

Bahrain-Victorious' team contains Damiano Caruso, who finished second at the Giro in 2021, and fourth in 2023. Their lineup also contains Antonio Tiberi, who finished third at the recent Tour of the Alps. Phil Bahaus is their sprint option.

Cofidis are aiming for stage wins with a mixed team that includes Devon's Harrison Wood, who is set for his Grand Tour debut.

Julian Alaphilippe and Tim Merlier lead Soudal Quick-Step's attempt at victories over the next three weeks, with the puncheur and sprinter hoping to offer up multiple wins. They will be joined by Luke Lamperti, who will make his Grand Tour bow in his first year at WorldTour level.

Merlier will be contested in the sprints by Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty), a former winner in Italy, Laurence Pithie (Groupama-FDJ) and Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck) among others.

EF Education-EasyPost have a mixed team prepared to challenge for hilly days, with recent Tour of the Alps stage winner Simon Carr and former runner-up Esteban Chaves among their eight.

Another team hunting for stage wins and not the overall is Israel-Premier Tech, with Mike Woods, Simon Clarke and Ethan Vernon among those hoping to taste victory. The ProTeam was handed an invite after qualifying through scoring points.

In the invited teams, Tudor look one of the strongest, with Matteo Trentin hoping to win at his home Grand Tour for the first time since 2016. He will be joined by fellow former stage winner Alberto Dainese, and Vuelta KoM winner Michael Storer.

Domenico Pozzovivo lines up for his 18th Giro with his seventh different team, this time appearing for VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè.

The race begins this Saturday in Turin, with 21 stages across Italy over the next month, including six summit finishes and two individual time trials.

Eight men are allowed in each squad, with a mix of climbers, sprinters, general classification hopefuls and domestiques .

Below are the confirmed squads for the race. We will update this page with more riders as teams are announced.

How to watch Giro d'Italia 2024: live stream cycling online

T his may be Tadej Pogacar's (UAE Team Emirates) first ever crack at the Giro d'Italia, but he's in such menacing form that if he doesn't ride off in the maglia rosa it will be a surprise. It's worth remembering, however, that the Slovenian last won a grand tour three years ago, and if there's a formula for beating him, Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) might just have it. Here's where to watch Giro d'Italia live streams online for free – from anywhere.

Pogacar is prone to the occasional off day, a trait that cost him at each of the past two tours he competed in. Thomas, who's never won La Corsa Rosa in five previous attempts, but came agonizingly close a year ago, when he wore the pink jersey for eight stages but lost it at the death, has a superb team backing him up.

Thymen Arensman and Tobias Foss each have the potential to be stars of tomorrow, so they should prove invaluable to the 37-year-old Welshman, who looks set to retire next year and is looking to make the most of the time he has left.

Both Thomas and Pogacar are planning to race the Tour de France this year too, partly because the 2024 Giro d'Italia route is significantly shorter and less jagged than usual, giving rise to the possibility of a first double since 1998.

Below is our guide to where to watch the 2024 Giro d'Italia – including FREE streams.

How to watch Giro d'Italia for FREE

One of the best things about the Giro d'Italia is that it's completely FREE to watch in many places around the world. For example:

Australia – SBS on Demand

Italy – Rai Sport

Belgium – Sporza

If you're from any of the countries listed above but you're abroad right now, don't worry about missing out on that free coverage. All you need to do is subscribe to a VPN to watch a free Giro d'Italia live stream and re-connect to your home streaming coverage.

Unblock any stream with a VPN

If you're keen to watch the 2024 Giro d'Italia but you're away from home and the coverage is geo-blocked, then you could always use a VPN to access it (assuming you're not breaching any broadcaster T&Cs, of course). You may be surprised by how simple it is to do.

Use a VPN to watch Giro d'Italia live streams from anywhere.

NordVPN – get the world's best VPN We regularly review all the biggest and best VPN providers and NordVPN is our #1 choice . It unblocked every streaming service in testing and it's very straightforward to use. Speed, security and 24/7 support available if you need – it's got it all.

The best value plan is the two-year deal which sets the price at $3.99 per month , and includes an extra 3 months absolutely FREE . There's also an all-important and there's a 30-day no-quibble refund if you decide it's not for you.

- So, try NordVPN 100% risk-free for 30 days VIEW DEAL ON

Using a VPN is as easy as one-two-three...

1. Download and install a VPN – as we say, our top choice is NordVPN .

2. Connect to the appropriate server location – open the VPN app, hit 'choose location' and select the appropriate location.

3. Go to the broadcaster's live stream – so if you're from Australia, just head to SBS on Demand and watch the cycling as if you were back at home!

How to watch Giro d'Italia 2024: live stream FREE in Australia

As mentioned above, cycling fans in Australia can watch the 2024 Giro d'Italia for free on SBS Viceland. That means you can also live stream coverage on the free-to-use SBS On Demand platform.

Outside Australia? Don't worry if you're out of the country and want to catch that free live stream – just grab a VPN and you can watch the race as if you were back at home on your laptop, mobile or other TV streaming device.

How to watch a Giro d'Italia live stream in the UK

Live coverage of the 2024 Giro d'Italia comes courtesy of Eurosport and its streaming arm Discovery+ in the UK.

A subscription costs £6.99 per month, and lets you tune in on a wide range of devices, as well as the Eurosport TV channels.

If you're an Aussie away from home, use a VPN to watch the Giro d'Italia free on SBS on Demand from abroad .

Watch Giro d'Italia live stream in the US without cable

The demise of GCN+ means it's time to get familiar with B/R Sports on Max , which has replaced the dedicated cycling streamer.

A subscription to B/R Sports on Max costs $9.99 per month on top of Max. However, for a limited time only, it's available to use for FREE, so long as you already subscribe to Max.

There are three  Max price  points: $9.99 a month with commercials, the $15.99 commercial-free subscription – both offering HD video quality – and the Ultimate Ad-Free plan, which at $19.99 provides 4K streaming, Dolby Atmos audio, and the ability to download up to 100 titles to watch offline.

There’s also the option to save up to 45% when you subscribe to an annual plan . That’s $70 for the ad-supported plan, $105 for the ad-free option, or $140 to go all-in with the Ultimate Ad-Free plan. Either way, when you go annual you essentially bag yourself two months’ worth of free streaming.

Tadej Pogacar hails the crowds at a glitzy team presentation for the Giro d'Italia this week.

Pogacar starts explosive first Giro weekend in pole but potholes await

The outstanding Slovenian cyclist is putting the hype in perspective as he prepares for his debut in historic Grand Tour

T adej Pogacar may be the outstanding bet to win his debut Giro d’Italia, but the Slovenian is also acutely aware of how three weeks of Grand Tour racing can throw up sudden, unexpected moments of weakness.

He has exploited that in the past, usurping his stunned compatriot Primoz Roglic to win the 2020 Tour de France. But he has also been victim, as in last year’s Tour, when Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard applied the coup de grâce on the Col de la Loze.

Pogacar, leader of the powerful UAE Emirates team, a serial winner this spring at Strade Bianche, the Volta a Catalunya and Liège–Bastogne–Liège, is the hottest favourite to start a Grand Tour for years, but he knows that Italy’s capricious Corsa Rosa is best treated with respect.

The 21-stage Giro begins on Saturday in Turin and has a potentially explosive opening weekend, with the first summit finish coming as soon as Sunday, on the 12km climb to the Santuario di Oropa at Biella. The three-week race also features two individual time trials and six mountain finishes prior to the final stage in Rome on 26 May.

Speaking before the race, Pogacar tried to put the hype into perspective by showing due deference to elders, such as Geraint Thomas, of Ineos Grenadiers and French veteran, Romain Bardet, leader of Team dsm-firmenich PostNL.

“There’s a lot of good riders in this Giro,” Pogacar said. “In three weeks there can be a lot of surprises. Bardet has shown some good form and Thomas, like always, will be good in this Giro.”

The 25-year-old Slovenian has been both audacious and arrogant this spring, winning with long, lone breakaways – a jaw-dropping 80km in Tuscany’s Strade Bianche in March followed by an equally bold solo attack to win the coveted Belgian Classic Liège–Bastogne–Liège – but quickly dismisses any suggestions of complacency.

“Every race I go to, I’m the favourite now,” Pogacar said, “so I just have to live with it,” adding that “everyone is trying to race against us and we need to control from the start.”

Thomas, who has already described Pogacar as destined to be “one of the greatest,” is in a relaxed frame of mind as he returns to a race that he lost last May by a handful of seconds. “It takes the pressure off us because everyone expects Pogacar to win,” the Welshman said.

As ever, the volatile weather, the specifics of racing in Italy and the steepness of legendary climbs such as the beloved Stelvio and the dreaded Mortirolo, will play a big part in the outcome of a race that is sometimes depicted as dull, but that usually provides a suitably dramatic finale.

Thirty-somethings Bardet and Thomas are definite podium contenders, but Pogacar’s most likely rivals may be lesser-known names, such as the fast-rising Belgian Cian Uijtdebroeks, who will lead the Visma-Lease a Bike team and Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale’s Australian leader, Ben O’Connor, fourth in the 2021 Tour de France and more recently second overall in last month’s Tour of the Alps.

But for the moment, this Giro is set to be all about Pogacar, already hugely popular in Italy after two wins in Strade Bianche and three victories in the season-ending Giro di Lombardia.

His showboating and swagger is not to everyone’s taste and the apparent ease of his dominance also triggers cycling’s sceptics, but his appetite for racing and winning, shows no sign of abating. French critics have depicted him as an “ogre,” and his rivals at this Giro are now wondering just how monstrous he is willing to be.
