Things You Should Know Before Going to Phuket Tiger Kingdom

Tiger Kingdom Phuket has laid down guidelines to ensure the safety of both the tigers as well as the visitors.

Given below are a few things that you should keep in mind when visiting here.

  • Read the book of rules that are provided at the entrance and abide by all the rules as you enjoy here.
  • Sanitize your hands before entering the enclosure where the Tigers are kept. This is important to safeguard the wild cats from any infections.
  • While clicking pictures with the wild cat, avoid using flash as the tigers may find it disturbing.
  • A pro tip is to carry your own camera or phone to avoid paying additional charges to professional photographers.
  • You are not allowed to touch a tiger on its head as they may perceive it as a threat and attack you.
  • It is best to approach the tigers from behind, as instructed by the caretakers.
  • Carry bags are not allowed inside the property, so it is best not to carry any bags.
  • In case you are carrying a bag, leave it at the reception.
  • Redeem your voucher directly at the attraction: Tiger Kingdom, Phuket.

What is the Best Time to Visit Tiger Kingdom Phuket?

This activity at the Tiger Kingdom Phuket runs in all weather conditions. However, it is good to avoid this place during the monsoons.

The best time to visit here is 9:00 AM as the tigers are most energetic at this time. Also, it is less crowded early in the morning.

The later it gets during the day, the more lethargic and irritable you will find the tigers.

If you wish to take a good snap, try to get it done before the day closes. This is because it becomes difficult to keep the tiger still later during the day.

Can Everyone Partake in This Activity?

Due to the slightly risky nature of this activity, it is not recommended for people with impaired physical mobility or medical conditions, pregnant women, and those who are mentally unstable.

Senior citizens and children below 10 are also not allowed in the tiger enclosures. Children below 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Tiger Welfare: Ethical Way to Tourism

At Tiger Kingdom, the welfare of their animals is their top priority. Tigers are never chained, sedated, declawed, or defanged. Daily human contact helps create a strong bond between the tigers and their keepers, ensuring they are responsive to positive reinforcement training. The park’s goal is not only to provide visitors with a once-in-a-lifetime experience but also to educate them about the plight of wild tigers and inspire conservation efforts.

It’s worth noting that these tigers are never subjected to practices like chaining, sedation, declawing, or defanging. Daily human interaction plays a crucial role in building trust between the tigers and their keepers, making the big cats responsive to positive reinforcement training techniques.

For those concerned about ethical practices, Tiger Kingdom maintains strict guidelines for visitor interactions. Before entering the tiger enclosures, visitors are required to wash their hands, remove their shoes, and wear foot covers to ensure hygiene. Clear instructions are provided on how to approach the tigers, with specific guidelines on areas to avoid touching, such as the head, ears, and front paws. Experienced handlers are always present to ensure the safety of both visitors and tigers.

Furthermore, Tiger Kingdom operates with limited visitor hours to minimize the time tigers spend with humans. These magnificent creatures are fed after the park closes, and they have access to open grounds for free movement outside their enclosures before and after operating hours. This approach, while not replicating the wild, represents a balanced effort to conserve these endangered animals.

What to expect at Tiger Kingdom Phuket?

The Tiger Kingdom Phuket might not be to everyone’s taste and opinions. While it aims to educate and raise awareness about these magnificent creatures, concerns have been raised about the ethics of such interactions and the impact on tiger welfare. We went to see for ourselves if the animals were well treated. The place is surprisingly large, clean and very well organised and as soon as you enter, you’ll see the several options offered to the visitors.

Tiger Kingdom Phuket

There are five sizes of tigers at Tiger Kingdom Phuket, plus a couple of cheetahs: newborn, smallest, small, medium and big, and the price is according to popularity. The cute cubs and the massive adults are the most popular, but you can choose all combinations according to your budget, be aware that it doesn’t come cheap.

Phuket Tiger Kingdom

We went in and asked lots of questions. The animals are in excellent condition, nicely groomed with beautiful fur, no bad smell and the enclosures are kept spotless. Many of the tigers are lazing around, leading inevitably to the general statement ‘tigers are drugged’, which no one can prove nor demonstrate. The guide’s answer was they were not; this is the daytime behaviour of well-fed tigers born in captivity. He said we should return at 5 pm when tigers get hungry and see how restless they become. Tigers responded well to the attention given to them.

Phuket Tiger Kingdom

The guide gave us a lot of interesting information, so don’t hesitate to ask anything as they speak English. For your safety, there are rules to respect: wash your hands before walking in (tigers are cleaner than you are :D). Don’t bring your bag inside, as tigers love to play with the straps. Don’t use flash, don’t walk alone in the parks and don’t make a loud noise. Once we saw the size of the beasts, we certainly didn’t feel like doing anything that could upset them. The young tigers might be considered ‘small’, but just one of their paws is as big as your face!

Phuket Tiger Kingdom

We went around several rooms and gardens and took our photos, and whether we agree with the idea of tigers being kept in captivity, it is hard not to have a broad smile when holding a baby tiger or lying down next to a full-grown feline. So we did our inspection and were reassured that the animals were extremely well treated. Now it is entirely up to you to decide whether you want to see the tigers.

Prices at the time we visited The Tiger Kingdom Phuket are as follows:

Then you can get combinations: Two tigers (big or medium + small) 1,700 baht Three tigers (big or medium + small + smallest) 2,500 Four tigers (big + medium + small + smallest): 3,500 baht.

Since everyone who enters the enclosure has to pay the full price, the total bill can be quite steep, whether you want to take your photo with the feline or not.

The Three Best Places to See Wild Tigers in Thailand

Wild tigers are some of the most magnificent creatures that roam the planet. It’s a real privilege to witness one in the wild, but it’s not easy. If you want to spot tigers in the wild when in Thailand, here are your best options.

There are approximately 160 Indochinese tigers that live in the wild in Thailand. They are critically endangered and spotting one in its natural habitat is not easy. Authorities are making every effort to save the wild tiger but it will require patience, persistence, and a lot of luck to spot one.

We have taken the time to find the best places and those with the highest chance of spotting a wild tiger to leave you in awe and tick one more item off your bucket list.

Where Can I See Tigers in the Wild?

Thailand, where about 160 Indochinese tigers still remain in the wild, is doing its best to save this critically endangered species.  The Southeast Asian nation has set up a tiger conservation center in the Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary. Here, local forest rangers are trained to keep a lookout for these rare big cats. They also keep a sharp eye out for the tiger’s main prey, like the guar and deer, whose numbers have also decreased due to illegal hunting and poaching.

Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary

Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary enjoys the largest population of tigers in Thailand; it’s also the easiest to spot tigers because of its good visibility, allowing visitors better opportunities to spot tigers in the forest. It helps that there are lots of open areas, three watchtowers, and a tiger nature trail.

There is no guarantee you will spot a wild tiger no matter how many times you visit. The best place to try is the visitor center, with many sightings recorded there. Visitors often report hearing the tigers roar, even if they don’t spot one.

Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary

Thung Yai Naresuan is a protected area with its own administration, but it adjoins Huai Kha making one single conservation area, the largest in mainland South-East Asia. The two cover a total area of  622,200 ha; they are both world heritage sites and have been since 1991.

Tiger Numbers Are Up

About ten years ago, the combined sanctuaries were home to 42 tigers. Today that number sits at 89, and with great effort and care, that number is slowly climbing.

What Other Animals Can You See In These Wildlife Sanctuaries?

Even if you don’t get lucky and spot a tiger, these conservation areas contain a tapestry of exotic animals, including elephants, banteng, leopards, and an array of birdlife to keep twitchers happy for hours.

Spot the Rare Wild Tiger in Khao Sok

Khao Sok lies conveniently on the mainland between Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak, and Koh Samui, the most visited destinations in Southern Thailand. Unfortunately, while the park is home to some of the rarest species on the planet, it has only a few tigers, which have not been seen in years.

The park is still worth a visit, who knows you might  be the one to post a pic of an endangered tiger in Khao Sok, but while you are looking,  pay attention as the park is also home to:

  • More than 300 species of bird
  • Close to 50 different mammals.
  • 30+ species of bats!
  • More insects and reptiles than there are stars in the sky
  • Close to 200 wild Asian elephants

Pang Sida National Park

Pang Sida covers 325 miles² and forms part of the Kaeo Province; it is situated within the Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex. Pang Sida was declared a national park in 1982; there is a small population of tigers, with recent camera traps recording between 10 and 15 different tigers.

The only way to get to this park is by your own transport, but there is unique wildlife and bird watching and beautiful campsites and waterfalls to enjoy. However, if it’s tigers you’re out to see, check with a ranger; they will give you the  best advice on the routes to travel to provide you with the best chance of spotting one of these elusive, endangered animals.  Most of the exotic mammals will be hiding in the dense forest, so you’ll need time, patience, and a lot of luck to spot a wild tiger.

Camera Footage Proves Existence of Wild Tigers in Khao Yai

Khao Yai National Park is Thailand’s first national park. Established in 1962, it is the third-largest national park in the country. For a long time, it was thought that there were no remaining tigers in the park with no sighting since 2002. That was until footage emerged of 18 tigers, 12 adults, and five cubs living in the forest. There are 126 surveillance cameras installed, and these tiger sightings were recorded between June 2016 and February 2017.

These images of the wild tigers were exciting news, especially for those who thought they had vanished from the area. Now, the footage serves to confirm a second breeding population of the Indochinese tiger. The terrain, which coversan area of  837 square miles, is a mixture of tropical forest and grasslands. There are thousands of species of plants, hundreds of different birds, including some rare species, but even with the existence of tigers now confirmed, it is still tricky to spot them, as they tend to stay in the densest part of the forest.

Said John Goodrich, program director at Panthera, a wild cat preservation group, commented, “The extraordinary rebound of eastern Thailand’s tigers is nothing short of miraculous.”

The Amazing Wild Tiger –  Nature’s Apex Predator

The tiger is one of the biggest and heaviest big cats out there; the males tend to be bigger than the females but differ according to their sub-species. Tigers are massively strong but are also good athletes. They can easily climb a tree even with prey in their mouth, and they are excellent swimmers with the ability to cross rivers a few miles wide.  Not your average cat, this tiger. They generally range in territories of about 20 – 40 sq miles.

What do Tigers Eat?

Tigers are strictly meat eaters and will eat any animal they can catch. They are incredible athletes and can run at speeds of between 35 to 40 mph. However, despite their athletic prowess, they prefer the ambush method instead of the long chase. They are hungry, though, and can eat up to 40 kg in one sitting. They don’t eat every day, so when they make a catch, they make it count. While meat is their staple diet, they occasionally eat vegetation to help with their metabolism.

Why Are There So Few Tigers in the Wild?

Southeast Asia used to be a pristine wilderness area, where Indochinese tigers enjoyed unlimited access to their natural habitat and could roam and feed with impunity. They were the apex predators at that time. In the 19th century, there were close to 100 000 wild tigers roaming all over Asia; today, there is about 4% of that number left, and conservationists are working tirelessly to save the tiger from extinction, which they say may happen in the next decade or two.

Why did the Tigers Disappear?

Unfortunately, humans have caused these magnificent creatures to disappear almost entirely from the planet. As the human populace increased, urban creep started encroaching on the tigers’ natural habitat, forcing the tigers to retreat to their last few areas of forest refuge. But their numbers dropped dramatically when people began hunting tigers for their pelts and bones to sell on the black market. They were almost hunted to extinction. Today, there are no longer any tigers in Vietnam or Cambodia, and Thailand has only about 160 at last count.

Are There Other Places to see Tigers in Thailand?

The answer is yes, but these are enclosed sanctuaries aimed at the tourist market. Seeing a tiger and even entering its cage is popular amongst tourists but not advisable. Many of these places have been accused of not caring for these animals properly and exploiting these creatures for profit. These are not wild tigers; most are bred in captivity and can never be released into the wild.

Tiger Kingdom

This is a touristy, for-profit place which allows you to see tigers up close. These are not wild tigers but are bred in captivity to make money. People love the selfie with a tiger scenario, but there have been many reports of the animals being mistreated, and anyone who loves big cats should rather stay away.

The Tiger Temple

The Tiger Temple was started and run by Buddhists. They received their first tiger cub back in 1999, and the temple has been dogged in controversy ever since with accusations of illegal breeding and trafficking. The place was once popular with tourists, who loved the idea of the Buddhist conservationist and of taking pics up close and personal with tigers and cubs. The authorities raided the temple in 2016, and in addition to 40 dead cubs, the police found a range of items made from tiger parts which they were selling as souvenirs. In total, the authorities removed 147 live tigers. The temple was closed down as a tiger sanctuary.

Conservation vs. Profit

The good news for those who enjoy wild animals being wild is that Thailand’s tiger population is on the increase. This is thanks to the Thai government and conservation groups fighting every day to protect the wild population and hopefully see their numbers return to what they once were 100 years ago. This is not easy, with poachers and hunters always trying to be one step ahead of the authorities. It takes a lot of money and effort to combat this evil, but Thailand seems to be winning for now.

They understand the benefit of preserving their natural heritage, both fauna and flora. Their tourism industry depends on it, and so do thousands of employees around the country who benefit directly or indirectly from a healthy tourism industry.

The Profiteers

Anyone who watched Tiger King, the Netflix hit series, will have noticed the shady nature of people involved with the so-called “animal sanctuaries” Unfortunately, Thailand is no different. People have realized the value of tigers, no matter how cruel it is. The worst part is they portray themselves as Tiger conservationists but are nothing of the sort. They are greedy people with no interest in their animals’ well-being. Animals are forced to be docile and trained to perform tricks for treats. Many are locked in cages all day, in conditions that are nothing close to their natural habitat. The Buddhist temple was shut down for these reasons. However, despite a history of maltreatment, the Tiger Kingdom remains open, ready to welcome selfie-seeking tourists by the thousands. The tigers hate it, and so should you. There are other tiger parks, not unlike the above two, but we won’t be visiting them here.

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is attempting to make it illegal to trade in tiger products. Many of these products are sold to well-heeled buyers who desire them for their aesthetic beauty or the promise of improved health and sexual vitality. They are also trying to cut down on illegal breeding facilities as they are undermining Thailand’s efforts to reduce demand for tiger products and further reduce poaching.

Thailand is Serious About Saving its Wild Tiger Population

As serious as they are, there is no guarantee of success. Poaching and hunting continue, although not on a scale of previous years. Rangers are being trained to deal with these poachers and hunters, but criminals are persistent, especially when large sums of money are made.

Their focus is currently on protecting the western forest – one of the last secure habitats of the local wild tiger population. It is not only Thailand’s tigers that are at risk, but the planet’s population of roughly 4000 tigers is also all at risk, and the tiger may become extinct in our lifetime. That is a tragedy. That should not be allowed to happen.

Find Your Inner Wild Tiger in Thailand

The three best places to spot wild tigers are Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary, Khao Yai, and Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary. All are different, but all have wild tigers, that with some persistence and luck, you will enjoy the privilege of spotting.

Visit the Tiger Kingdom in Phuket to See Tigers Up Close

With the plight of wild, big cats a hot topic in the news, everyone has to make up their own mind about visiting these types of tiger attractions in Thailand. One of them in Kanchanaburi province was closed a few years ago when the authorities discovered tigers were being sold into the Chinese traditional medicine trade. But the Tiger Kingdom in Phuket is one attraction where you can see many tigers up close, have your picture taken with them, pet them, and even feed tiger cubs.

Tiger conservation is one of the world’s worries as the wild habitat for most of the tiger species all over the world is slowly shrinking due to agriculture, habitat encroachment and development. The attractions owners have a breeding program to help the conservation of the species.

These types of attractions can pave the way for people who have never seen a live tiger up close to gain an appreciation for them. In seeing these magnificent animals up close, tourists can develop empathy for them and want to conserve them for future generations.

Choice of Programs

At the Tiger Kingdom in Phuket, the tigers are not drugged, nor are they in chains. They are in small cages for the duration of the tourist visits after which they are said to have access to a larger enclosure on the property where they can socialize and play.

Visitors can choose from just a general admission or a series of programs that allow you to interact with the tigers. The park offers several different programs, depending on the size of the cats. Tourists who want the experience of interacting with tiger cubs are among the most popular options, and this program charges the most at 1,400 THB. Small and medium tigers cost 1,000 THB, and the big tiger program costs 1,100 THB.

You are also given the choice of being able to visit with multiple tigers. A visit with both a big or medium tiger as well as a tiger cub costs 1,500 THB. An interaction with a big or medium tiger, a small tiger and a tiger cub costs 2,500 THB. For those who can’t get enough of tigers, you can choose the Take 4 program for 3,100 THB, in which you’ll be able to visit with a big, medium, small and, of course, a tiger cub.

Tour Schedules and Things to Know

You also have a choice of when you visit Tiger Kingdom in Phuket. Tours are scheduled for 9 AM, 11 AM and 2 PM. But the park is open from 9 AM to 6 PM.

Visitors to the park must be fit and healthy to interact with the tigers. They must be able to squat and stand up quickly. All the programs last about ten minutes. There are photographers on hand at the park who can take pictures for people who don’t have a camera.

The tigers at the park have all been born in captivity and hand-raised. They are used to being around people. For people who have never experienced the awe and wonder of being up close to these lords of the jungle, this is your chance.
