KALAMAZOO, MI -- The newest student housing facility at Western Michigan University opened to students earlier this month and was celebrated during the first Board of Trustees meeting of the new year Thursday, Jan. 21.

The board applauded the opening of the 197-unit apartment building with a $60 million price tag.

The six-story residence can house up to 341 students. Each unit has a kitchen and bathroom and living space, said Diane Anderson, vice president for student affairs.

“We got rave reviews from students and their parents at move-in,” Anderson said. “We are very pleased with the final product of this facility.”

A video shared with the board shows construction of the facility and tours the individual units and community space. The video also shows the plans for a new student center on campus.

The facility was designed with “urban loft” in mind and includes a lot of community shared space, Anderson said. The building, which is open to upper classmen and graduate students, includes social and study lounges, fire places and a fitness room, according to the university website.

The facility was originally scheduled to open in fall 2020 but construction was delayed because of the pandemic, Anderson said.

Arcadia Flats is the first of multiple new additions to campus that will create Hilltop Village. A new student center is also part of the plan to revitalize WMU’s campus and attract new students.

The new student housing complex takes the place of Elmwood Apartments, which were built in 1954 and demolished in June 2018. The university said Elmwood Apartments were the first thing people saw when driving past the university on Stadium Drive.

“Now we have this beautiful, state-of-the-art facility that does make quite a statement,” Anderson said.

Plans for that other addition to campus began in 2011. Construction of the center began with the demolition of McCraken Hall in May.
