TSA Toothpaste Rules & Size Limits: Brush Up On The Latest Restrictions [2022]

Undoubtedly, one of the most common items to bring along on your travels is toothpaste.

While many hotels will supply you with toothpaste it is not always guaranteed and many times you might receive subpar quality toothpaste.

And unless you are flying first class or business class , chances are you won’t be issued toothpaste during your flight.

So in order to keep your teeth fresh and clean, you’ll probably think about bringing toothpaste with you on a plane.

In this article, I will answer the question of whether or not you can bring toothpaste on the plane and what TSA rules and size limits might apply.

I will also give you a refresher on the liquids rule and provide some clarity about the difference between liquid ounces and solid ounces.

Can you bring toothpaste on a plane?

Yes, you are allowed to bring toothpaste through TSA airport security and onto the plane that you are boarding.

However, when bringing toothpaste as a carry-on it will be subject to the 3-1-1 liquids rule and so you’ll have to abide by those size requirements.

These size limits can get a little bit tricky for toothpaste because of the difference between volume and weight that is used on packaging.

But we will clear this up in this article.

TSA Toothpaste Rules & Size Limits

Bringing toothpaste as a carry-on.

If you are attempting to bring toothpaste as a carry on then you will need to get your toothpaste through a TSA security checkpoint.

This means dealing with the TSA liquids rule.

The  TSA Liquids 3-1-1 Rule  states that you can only bring liquids in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and that all of your liquid containers must fit “comfortably” into one clear, quart-size bag.

(When going through the checkpoint, you’ll have to remove your quart-size bag from your luggage unless you have  TSA Pre-Check .)

TSA has a pretty broad definition of what is considered a liquid.

Any types of creams, gels, lotions, etc., are all considered liquids.

Basically anything that is usually poured, scooped, squeezed, slurped, or mashed will be considered a liquid for TSA purposes. 

So TSA will definitely consider your toothpaste a liquid.

(Note: there are some solid tablets you can use to brush your teeth that wouldn’t be subject to the liquids rule, but I am just going to assume that most people are going to use normal toothpaste.)

This means that if you want to bring toothpaste on a plane it needs to be in a 3.4 ounce container and if you have multiple liquid containers they need to fit “comfortably” inside of a quart size bag.

Comfortably just means that the seams are not bursting on your bag. So if you have toothpaste inside of a bag that cannot be zipped shut then that would not pass the standard.

The key thing to note here is that your containers can only be up to 3.4 ounces (100 ml).

The rule does not care about how much substance is inside the container.

So, for example, if you had a six ounce package of toothpaste but it only had one ounce of toothpaste inside it that would still not comply with TSA .

Volume or weight?

The fact that the TSA 3-1-1 rule is focused on liquids and uses milliliters means that they are focused on volume (ml) and not weight (grams) .

This gets a bit tricky because a toothpaste package will often list ounces in weight and not volume .

To clear up the confusion, you can use a formula that factors in the density of toothpaste (which should be about 1.3 g/ml).

This would mean that your toothpaste weight in grams (which is usually the measurement shown on the label) would need to be ~130g or less. (130g equals 100 ml for toothpaste.)

But 130g also equals 4.58 (weight) ounces.

This means that you could argue that a filled container with 4.58 ounces of toothpaste or under should be allowed through TSA security. (Packaging can add a little bit of weight.)

Your argument is basically that the toothpaste squeeze bottle is a container of 100 ml of “liquid.”

The problem with that is you would have to bet on a TSA agent: 1) accepting your conversions and 2) appreciating the differences between mass and volume.

When taking all your belongings through a busy security checkpoint, it’s not exactly the ideal time for a lecture on these things….

Therefore, I would recommend for you to treat liquid ounces and weight ounces the same so that you can avoid issues in security.

Sometimes you can find a toothpaste brand that sells toothpaste right at 3.4 ounces like the Sensodyne pictured above.

But a standard package of toothpaste (Colgate, Crest, etc.) will be around 4.2 (weight) ounces and a lot of them are even larger.

Here are some standard package sizes for toothpaste brands:

• Colgate – 4.2oz (119g)
• Crest – 4.1oz (116g)
• Sensodyne – 3.4oz (96.4)
• Aquafresh – 5.6oz (158.7g)
• Aim – 5.5oz (156g)
• Arm & Hammer – 6.0oz (170g)

This means that you may not be able to bring a standard package of toothpaste through TSA security unless the agent understands the difference between mass and volume.

Instead, to make life easier you may need to purchase the smaller travel packs of toothpaste.

You can find these packages in various grocery stores, drugstores, and also online. Many of these travel size packages are under 1 ounce so you should have plenty of clearance. 

Also, you might consider buying an entire package of TSA-approved toiletries . In one package you can find things like toothpaste, mouthwash, deodorant, razors, combs, etc.. Many of these are gender specific. 

Checked baggage

If you are bringing your toothpaste through in your checked baggage, you don’t have to comply with the liquids rule size requirements.

For example, if you wanted to bring a large pack full of five ounce containers of toothpaste that would be totally fine. 

Tip: If you were bringing toothpaste that has already been opened you might consider bagging that package up so that it does not spill or squirt out. There is nothing worse than trying to get toothpaste out of your garments….

Smuggling toothpaste?

Many travelers have written about how some toothpaste does not show up on standard x-ray machines.

Because of this, some travelers choose to hide their large toothpaste packages inside their bag and get it through security. 

Personally, I would not do this.

First, TSA is moving to a different type of x-ray scanner that I’m guessing will be able to detect toothpaste.

Second, I think it is just a bad idea to try to smuggle toothpaste when there are so many cheap and easy alternatives.

If you get caught, it is only going to slow down your travels and also slowdown the travels for other people. Plus, you will be without toothpaste. 

So my advice would be to just buy some at the store.

Other items

You can bring your toothbrushes including electric toothbrushes through security without any problems. Floss is allowed as well.

If you are attempting to bring mouthwash through the airport security be sure that it complies with the liquid 3.4 ounce rule.

What does the TSA say about toothpaste?

For carry-on luggage, the Transportation Security Administration states each passenger is allowed to bring liquids, gels and aerosols in containers of 3.4oz (100ml) or smaller, as part of the 3-1-1 rule. This includes toothpaste.

In general, you should consider that anything poured, scooped, squeezed, slurped, or mashed will be considered a liquid by TSA.

For checked bags, the TSA allows larger containers of liquids, gels, and aerosols as long as they are properly labeled. A regular or full-size tube of toothpaste can be placed inside checked luggage. See the screenshot below from the TSA’s website .

What is the 3-1-1 rule?

The 3-1-1 liquids rule states , “Each passenger may carry liquids, gels, and aerosols in travel-size containers that are 3.4 ounces (100ml). Each passenger is limited to one quart-size bag of liquids, gels, and aerosols. Common travel items that must comply with the 3-1-1 liquids rule include toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash, and lotion.”

In short, pack your toothpaste in a 3.4oz (100ml) or smaller container, pack your mouthwash in a 3.4 oz (100ml) or smaller container, and pack your shampoo in a 3.4oz (100ml) or smaller container. Place all of these items in a 1 quarter or smaller ziplock bag and you may bring them through the TSA checkpoint.

TSA does not specify if the containers have to be screwed on, resealable, glass or plastic. There are a variety of TSA-compliant containers you can purchase on Amazon. Additionally, many manufacturers create TSA-compliant specific tubes which you can purchase.

How to pack toothpaste in your carry-on luggage

The easiest way to pack toothpaste in your carry-on luggage is to buy a TSA-compliant one made by the manufacturer and then include it in your quart size bag. This is easier than purchasing an entirely separate container and trying to fill it from the bottle you have at home.

Why is toothpaste not allowed on planes?

To be clear, toothpaste is allowed on planes - toothpaste in containers greater than 3.4oz are not allowed in carry-on bags. The reason the TSA restricts how much toothpaste passengers can bring on planes is because it could potentially be used to make explosive devices.

This is why the 3-1-1 liquids rule exists: to ensure no liquids, gels, and aerosols over 3.4oz are brought into airplane cabins as they could be used to create a dangerous explosive.

How to pack toothpaste in your checked luggage

Toothpaste can be packed into your checked luggage as normal. Simply ensure that the toothpaste is in its original tube and pack it in your bag. You do not want to have any substance in an unmarked container, else your luggage could be subject to additional screening.

There are no restrictions on container size or the quantity of toothpaste tubes you can travel with.

We’d recommend placing your toothpaste in a clear plastic bag or toiletry bag to prevent it from oozing out into other parts of your luggage. Temperature and pressure changes may move your toothpaste around in the event the cap gets jostled loose while in transit.

How much toothpaste do I need to pack?

A single 3.4oz tube of toothpaste will be adequate for at least a week of travel for most people. Even for those heavily focused on tooth care and may brush several times a day, a single 3.4oz tube will last at least a week if not longer.

Only for trips longer than 2 weeks should you consider bringing an additional tube of toothpaste.

It’s also worth considering that you can purchase another tube of toothpaste at your destination or use solid toothpaste tablets, which we’ll cover in a later section.

3.4oz - How to tell the difference between volume and weight

3.4 ounces is not always the exact same as 3.4 fluid ounces, but they’re close. While both represent a unit of measurement, ‘ounces’ by itself represents a weight. ‘Fluid ounces’ measures and represents a volume. For example, you may need 6 ounces of flour for a recipe, while you may also need 6 fluid ounces of milk.

For the purpose of air travel, the TSA is referring to the ‘fluid ounces’ measurement, even though they don’t explicitly state it. You’ll see almost all toothpaste tubes list the contents of their toothpaste in ‘ounces’ as in a weight.

Could this cause TSA to ask you to throw your toothpaste away? In theory, yes, but it is highly unlikely.

The true difference lies in the densities of the materials you’re measuring. 6 fluid ounces of water will weigh 6 ounces. However, 6 fluid ounces of toothpaste may not weigh 6 ounces. It depends entirely on the make up of the toothpaste.

We’re splitting hairs here. TSA isn’t going to check the density of your toothpaste nor is going to give you a hard time as long as you have a travel size tube of toothpaste. In reality, the absolute worst thing that could happen is you’re asked to throw it away before going through the checkpoint. If that happens, get to your destination, buy a new tube, problem solved.

Is prescription toothpaste allowed through TSA security?

According to the TSA website , “TSA will allow larger amounts of medically necessary liquids, gels, and aerosols in reasonable quantities for your trip, but you must declare them to TSA officers at the checkpoint for inspection.”

Under this definition, this would include prescription toothpastes like:

• Colgate PreviDent 5000 Boster Plus Prescription Strength
• Clinpro 5000 Toothpaste

These are toothpastes that have an increased amount of fluoride compared to over-the-counter options. You will need a prescription from your dentist for these and it’s recommended to bring that prescription with you when you travel.

Talk with your dentist prior to travel to get an updated prescription if possible. Some retailers offer prescription toothpaste in 3.4oz (100ml) bottles, like:

• Henry Schein

Prescription mouthwash will fall under this same category.

Solid toothpaste and other alternatives

Another option to consider is solid toothpaste tablets . These consist of a tablet that you place on a wet toothbrush and then brush as you would normally.

These are usually made of natural ingredients, meant to provide the same cleaning power as conventional toothpastes, and are quite affordable. These are not under the 3-1-1 liquids rule since they’re not liquids or gels and you can bring as many as you want.

Alternatively, you could use a Crest Scope (formerly Crest Wisp) . These are single-use toothbrushes that are pre-pasted and include a floss pick and tongue scraper. They are each individually sealed in packs of 2.

Lastly, another option to consider is toothpaste powder . It’s a dry powder that you mix with water and use normally to brush your teeth with. Again, like the toothpaste tablets, since it’s a solid, it’s not bound by the 3-1-1 liquids rule and you can bring as much as you would like.

Here's the 411 on the TSA's 3-1-1 liquids rule

We've all been there. Waiting in the Transportation Security Administration line only to hear agents call for a "bag check," often because a traveler had a liquid product in their carry-on that's over the allowed limit (or some sort of other prohibited item).

It's a process that can sure slow things down, particularly on the busiest travel days. As you pack for your trip and consider what to put in your carry-on or checked luggage, it's important to consider what the TSA's limits are for liquids and similar products.

Since September 2006, the TSA has gone by the 3-1-1 rule when it comes to those types of products, including items like toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash and lotion -- sunscreen included.

In short, the 3-1-1 rule is: Each liquid you bring through the TSA checkpoint must be in a 3.4-ounce or smaller container ("3"), all containers must be placed inside one clear quart-size plastic bag ("1") and each passenger is only allowed one plastic bag ("1").

If you meet those requirements, you should get through security without issue. However, if your liquid items are larger than 3.4 ounces each, you'll have to leave them in your checked bag.

There are a few exceptions, though.

The TSA has kept in place a temporary pandemic exception to the rule, allowing up to 12 ounces of liquid hand sanitizer in carry-on baggage.

Part of this exception: The hand sanitizer will have to be screened separately since it's technically over the limit. You'll need to remove it from your bag before it goes through the scanner.

There are also exceptions for larger amounts of medically necessary liquids, gels and aerosols. You can bring those products in larger, "reasonable" quantities, the TSA's website says. However, you must declare those items to security officers at the checkpoint for inspection.

This could, obviously, take a little more time than if you're traveling without those items.

This exception doesn't include sunscreen, despite calls to relax sunscreen restrictions at TSA checkpoints. Like other liquid products, sunscreen bottles over 3.4 ounces must go in your checked luggage.

There are also many liquids you cannot bring with you .

You can bring creamy cheeses, liquid chocolate, liquid coffee, creamy dips and spreads, gravy, honey, hummus, ice cream, jam, jelly, juice, syrup, peanut butter, salad dressing, sauce, salsa, soda, soup and yogurt as long as they are in a container of less than 3.4 ounces according to the TSA .

And yes, you can bring your water bottle with you, even if it weighs more than 3.4 ounces — as long as it's empty. This can also be a great way to save money at the airport, since -- as the TSA points out -- many airports have filling stations for reusable water bottles.

When in doubt, consult the TSA's list of what you can carry through the airport and check with your airline.

Toothpaste dots and other toothpaste packing hacks.

We’re excited to introduce our new series, “ Packing Hacks ,” which turns the female traveler into MacGyver. We’ll take everyday objects and come up with new uses to make your travel experience easier. 

This week we’re starting with a liquid (well, paste) that can be pretty annoying to pack, particularly if it explodes in your bag: toothpaste!

Travel Size Toothpaste Refills

Ah, those pesky travel sized toothpastes. You buy one for $1 every time you go on a trip and end up tossing them afterwards, but you could easily refill them . 

Just press a full-sized tube up against the travel-sized tube and squeeze gently, as you would when refilling a shampoo bottle. After all, reusing bottles is better for the environment.

Make Your Own Travel Toothpaste Container

Another toothpaste hack is to find another container for your toothpaste that’s not as fragile and takes up less room. An eye dropper works great, particularly for weekend camping trips. 

Just squeeze enough out onto your toothbrush and you’re ready to start the day.

DIY Single Use Toothpaste Packs

A secondary storage option is making single use tubes of toothpaste and other liquids. 

Take a pair of needle nose pliers and pinch the end of a straw. Hold it over a flame to seal the plastic until you can’t see any holes. Cut the straw into one inch pieces. 

On the other end, squeeze one brushing’s worth of toothpaste or however much you prefer. Clamp the second end and seal with the flame as you did before. 

You can also punch holes in one side to put on a string. This packing hack ensures that you bring only as much as you will need for the trip.

Liquid Free Toothpaste Dots

Make your own dry toothpaste dots.

To avoid liquids altogether, we’ve tested out Lush’s Toothy Tabs solid toothpaste that you chew to brush. But you can make your own at home with items you already have. 

Get a piece of aluminum foil or baking paper and gently squeeze out small dots of toothpaste onto it. Sprinkle with baking soda to avoid sticking. 

When they’re solid, which may take three or so days without a dehydrator, pop them into a plastic bag and you’re ready to go! Be sure to avoid gel toothpastes, as they won’t solidify. I had to test it out a few times before I changed toothpastes.

Tooth powder

If you’re going on a long trip and want to stretch the liquid allowance for carry-on luggage, you might want to switch over to using tooth powder when traveling.

Tooth powder is the precursor to the toothpaste we know today. You can buy them online or make your own by mixing a combination of any of these common ingredients: baking soda, sea salt, activated charcoal, bentonite clay, sage, calcium powder, peppermint, or xylitol.

One of the basic recipes are as follows:

Mix together:

• 1 tablespoon baking soda
• ½ tablespoon coarse salt
• ¼ teaspoon ground mint (optional for flavor)

Mix and store in a sealed jar in a cool place.

To use tooth powder, dip your toothbrush into the powder, run it through the tap to get a bit of water, and brush as you normally would.

Oh no, I forgot my toothpaste!

Don’t fret, because there are alternatives you can use in this kind of situation.

• Brush with just water. You won’t get the minty freshness after you brush, but at least you’re removing food particles and plaque from your teeth.
• Brush with salt. If you have some sea salt with you, mix a small amount (about half a teaspoon) with some warm water. Dip your toothbrush into the salty water and brush your teeth. Salt is antibacterial, but be careful when brushing because it can be quite abrasive on your teeth.
• Brush with mouthwash. If you’re conscious about your breath, dip your toothbrush into your mouthwash and use the liquid to brush your teeth. You won’t get the full cleanse as brushing with toothpaste, but at least you’ll get most of the dirt out and have a fresher breath.

For long trips and/or when you want to save pack weight, tooth powder instead of paste works well. It’s also TSA compliant. I used both Colgate and Pepsodent tooth powders for years, but they’re impossible to find these days.

I put my toothpaste in a thoroughly cleaned eye drops bottle. I put the toothpaste into the bottle, and poured a bit of mouthwash in with it (shake very well to mix it up), to thin it out a bit. Once it’s at a consistency that allows it to be squeezed out of the bottle, I am ready to go! The whole bottle lasted me a 2week trip to Europe, and didn’t take up much space in my 3-1-1 bag either.

Oh I love the dots! I am really excited to give it a try. The travel sized toothpastes are always just a bit too small for a full week trip. It drives me nuts.

I think this post is missing the point of Toothy Tabs. One of the main reasons for them is to cut down on waste. Once tabs are gone, the box is recyclable. However with these “tooth dots” above you have the non-recyclable tube plus the (if you’re using the baking soda container pictured, not the box) a recyclable (well, photodegradable) plastic container. Or you can reuse it. But the point is that by doing this you have created more waste. Freezing it on tinfoil (that will likely not be reused) and then transferred to a plastic bag. This is a far cry from Toothy Tabs.

So if I dried out like 10 days worth of these toothpaste dot things would I be better off doing that or just taking a tube of it? And would I be able to just take these in a little jar in my carry on in my 3-1-1 bag?

The toothpaste dots are a great travel hack. I have been able to make using wax paper as well as parchment paper instead of aluminum foil. After preparing the dots initially, i place the sheet in my refrigerator to help with the drying process and protect from getting any dust from the air on them.

Unfortunately Lush toothy tabs are now in plastic bottles, no longer cardboard containers :(. I have stopped buying them because of this. I love this hack. I can now make my own using parchment paper. Thanks so much. Love this website. So much useful info. I backpack with my girls. Best way to travel in our opinion.

I don’t think they would melt, but it depends on what is left of the product once the liquid has been removed. Maybe make one and set it in the hot sun to see what happens?

Create your own travel-size toothpaste

Last week I attended the annual Travel Goods Show in Las Vegas, where manufacturers showcase all the latest luggage and travel accessories to retailers. While I’ll have a more comprehensive report for you in the coming weeks, I just had to spread the word about my favorite discovery — it’s a DIY travel toothpaste container called Toothpaste 2 Go . Brilliant in its simplicity (why didn’t something think of this before?), Toothpaste 2 Go is a universal adapter that helps you easily transfer toothpaste from a regular size tube to a reusable one-ounce travel-size tube. Simply screw the adapter onto your favorite toothpaste, screw the other end to the travel tube and squeeze.

How to pack toothpaste for air travel

Toothpaste does count as a liquid or gel when you’re traveling, so be sure to put only travel-size toothpaste tubes or refillable toothpaste tubes into your carry-on bag. When you’re packing for air travel, remember the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule for liquids that you plan to carry onto a plane:

3 – Containers of liquid or gel must be 3.4 ounces or less (that includes toothpaste). 

1 – You are allowed one 1-quart size clear plastic, zip-top bag to hold your 3.4-ounce containers

1 – Each traveler can have 1 of these plastic bags, which will go through checkpoint security.

The rules are different for checked baggage, which can have containers that are larger than 3.4 ounces. 

Can you refill squeeze tubes?

Most of us wouldn’t want to deal with the mess but in a pinch you can refill squeeze tubes of toothpaste. Just hold the two tubes end to end and squeeze. The hard part is keeping them together! 

We’ve seen hacks for making your own toothpaste refill adapters but you need power tools and a really good reason not to just buy yourself a new tube – or to buy the one already made for you by Toothpaste 2 Go!

The easiest way to refill a tube of toothpaste if you don’t have an adapter is to cut off the end (not the cap) of the tube, do your refilling, and then use a heat source to melt the plastic back together.

Steves shared in a blog post  that he reuses one TSA-approved tube by squeezing toothpaste from a larger tube into the smaller one. Rick Steves' Toothpaste Traveling Hack

The travel television personality shared his short and sweet "crazy packing tip" that he has even come up with a name for — docking. "I've developed a way to 'dock' two tubes of toothpaste (simply holding them together, mouth-to-mouth, really tightly) in order to squeeze paste from one tube into the other," he wrote. 

This trick usually means he has enough toothpaste for his travels without having to stock up on a new tube once he arrives. While it may sound like a cheap item to bring each time, the cost adds up quickly for people like Steves who are quite the frequent world travelers. 

One of Steves' readers took the advice and even suggested via a travel  forum  on his site that travelers should open the smaller tube and squeeze it slowly until the toothpaste is at the opening of the tube, so they can get the air totally out of the travel-size tube and make the most of the refill. Steves didn't elaborate on how many tubes he brings per trip, but other users suggest bringing around one per week of travel, depending on how much toothpaste someone uses, of course. Most dentists recommend a pea-sized amount, so if you adhere to this you can make the most of your travel tube.  Steves never forgets to pack other toiletry essentials for a trip  –– including a toothbrush, floss, sunscreen, deodorant, a hairbrush, facial cleanser, and a razor.

Other Ways To Efficiently Pack Toothpaste

A few of Steves' readers suggested  even more frugal hacks that can save travelers even more money. To score a free travel-sized toothpaste vessel, you can reuse the tube your dentist hands out at the end of a visit. Other users pointed out that travelers could start out with a cheaper small toothpaste tube from a dollar store. 

On the opposite end of that spectrum, while more expensive, there are refillable toothpaste tubes available for purchase that make Steves' hack easier. The TSA-approved tubes are designed to open at the opposite end of the mouth, so people can fill it up with their preferred toothpaste before folding the flap down and sliding a tight clip over the end of it. Some brands even offer different sizes that are all less than 3.4 fluid ounces, so you can pack extra light for a weekend away, or maximize your toothpaste allowance for a multi-week trip.

If you're really looking to lighten your load, there are some traditional toothpaste alternatives, like chewable toothpaste tablets. The tablets have grown in popularity because they are eco-friendly, easy to travel with, and lightweight. Most of the tablets have similar ingredients as traditional toothpaste, but they're used slightly differently since people bite down and chew a tablet with a wet brush. Dog owners know that if there’s one step of the grooming process where you can’t slack off, it’s dental care. Preventing periodontal disease takes dedicated brushing several times a week with a quality toothbrush and pet-friendly toothpaste. While you may want to try your preferred brand when your dog’s tube runs out, you should never use human toothpaste for your pets.

With different biology and tooth brushing habits than their human owners, dogs also need unique toothpaste to keep their mouths fresh and healthy. We’ll discuss why dogs can’t use human toothpaste so you can plan a safer dental routine for your pup.

Can Dogs Use Human Toothpaste?

Dogs can’t use human toothpaste due to the toxicity of various ingredients, including fluoride and xylitol. Since dogs don’t know how to spit, they can swallow a significant amount of toothpaste.

In excessive amounts, this can cause several health issues ranging from lethargy and an upset stomach to seizures and even death.

Fluoride is the active ingredient in most human toothpastes because of its potent anti-caries properties. It is the negative ion of fluorine, an abundant element that has received considerable attention in recent years due to its potential effects on mammals as more of it enters the environment through natural and anthropogenic causes, including our toothpaste use.

Dogs, like most mammals, readily absorb fluorine. If a toxic amount is ingested your dog may experience toxic effects and even die. With low-dose exposure over time, some fluoride binds calcium and ends up in the skeletal system, primarily in the ribs and other areas of spongy bone. Since fluorine in bones is cumulative, older dogs tend to have more in their bodies than young dogs, however growing bones deposit the fluoride at a higher rate. This means exposure at a young age is more critical than in adulthood.

Over time, this fluoride accumulation can lead to skeletal problems. Dogs can experience bony growths, sclerosis of bones, and lameness. Signs of chronic fluoride exposure include:

• Mottling in the enamel of developing dog teeth (dental fluorosis)
• Lameness and stiffness due to abnormal bone growth and tissue hardening
• Decreased appetite
• Weight loss and muscular wasting

Fluoride Poisoning

While small amounts of fluoride can increase damage over time, large amounts of fluoride can have immediate toxic effects on a dog. If your dog eats a large amount of toothpaste, the influx of fluoride can quickly inflame the stomach and intestines.

Pets may experience GI upset, drooling, vomiting, and diarrhea. Blood calcium levels can plummet to spur a weakened, rapid, or irregular heartbeat, and your dog may show signs of nervous system effects.

How Much Fluoride Is Toxic to Dogs?

The toxic effects of sodium fluoride, a common active ingredient in human toothpaste, may occur at less than 1 mg/kg of body weight. At 5-10 mg/kg, they can become fatal. For a 50-pound dog, that would put the potentially lethal amount around 113–227 mg.

A small tube of toothpaste may not be immediately toxic to a dog of this size. For instance, a 24-gram travel-sized tube of Crest containing 0.243% sodium fluoride, or 0.16% fluoride, would only contain about 38 mg, enough to make a large dog feel ill but unlikely to cause severe harm.

If they ingested an entire 158-gram (5.6 oz.) tube, however, that would subject the dog to over 250 mg, a potentially fatal amount. Smaller dogs have an even lower threshold for fluoride toxicity, and excessive amounts can still cause considerable discomfort if they aren’t fatal.

Fluoride absorbs into the system in roughly 90 minutes, presenting signs within 2 hours of ingestion. Without prompt treatment, dogs can collapse and succumb within only a few hours.

You may think you’re out of the woods if your dog gets their mouth on a more kid-friendly fluoride-free toothpaste, but even those can contain hazardous ingredients. Many owners know the dangers of xylitol, an artificial sweetener we use in numerous food products.

Given its anti-cavity properties, manufacturers often use it as a top ingredient in flavorful products.

Xylitol Poisoning

When they ingest xylitol, dogs can experience sudden hypoglycemia from a massive surge of insulin. Higher doses can also cause acute liver failure with or without signs of hypoglycemia. Signs of xylitol poisoning include:

• Lethargy and weakness
• Poor coordination
• Vomiting and diarrhea
• Lack of appetite
• Tremors and seizures

Xylitol poisoning can kill a dog in sufficient amounts. Dogs that ingest over 75 mg/kg are generally at risk of sudden blood glucose drops, with liver failure becoming a major concern when they have over 500 mg/kg.

Hypoglycemia can occur within only 30–60 minutes after ingestion, making it crucial to contact your vet immediately if your dog ingests xylitol toothpaste by mistake.

Since fluoride and other toxic compounds tend to absorb quickly, you must contact your vet immediately if you suspect your dog ate human toothpaste . The best way to maintain your dog’s dental hygiene and keep their gums and teeth free of plaque is by scheduling regular teeth cleanings at the vet and brushing their teeth daily with a dog-safe toothpaste and toothbrush combo. Dental chews can also help: They work to mechanically scrape off odor-causing bacteria and leftover food from their teeth, according to our experts. Some dental chews include a chemical anti-plaque agent like delmopinol that creates a protective barrier on the teeth.

Dental treats can help remove some plaque buildup on their teeth and can be a valuable addition to your at-home oral health care for your dog, says Dr. Joe Wakshlag , professor of clinical nutrition and sports medicine and rehabilitation at Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine. However, these treats shouldn’t replace the aforementioned teeth-cleaning methods, nor should you give them to pups less than six months old since their adult teeth haven’t come in yet, he says.

The veterinarians I spoke to suggest looking for a registered certification mark from the Veterinary Oral Health Council — an entity of the American Veterinary Dental College — which indicates that the dental treat has met pre-set standards that prove it can reduce calculus (tartar) and plaque development on your dog’s teeth by 15-20%. The VOHC — a group of veterinary dentists and dental scientists — review data from manufacturers’ research trials and give the VOHC Seal to products that they determine can help reduce the severity of periodontal disease in dogs and cats with regular use, the American Veterinary Dental College says.

Are dental chews worth it?

Dental chews can help reduce plaque and tartar accumulation as long as they’re used alongside other teeth-cleaning methods. You should also consider what type of chewer your dog is to see if they’d actually benefit from regular dental treats or if that’ll just be empty added calories, says Wakshlag.

If you do notice these treats aren’t being fully chewed, it’s likely better to schedule annual professional dental cleanings, especially for smaller dogs who are more prone to dental problems, says Wakshlag.

Make sure to track the dental treat calories and adjust food portions accordingly — treats shouldn’t exceed more than 10% of your dog’s daily calorie intake, experts told us in our guide to dog treats . If your dog is getting several treats throughout the day, it’s probably best to give them two to three dental chews a week rather than giving them out daily, says Wakshlag. And just like their regular treats, “always consider the size of your dog and avoid chews or sticks that are too small for the breed to avoid choking hazards,” says Caylee Freels, a licensed veterinary technician at VCA White Lake Animal Hospital .

Buc-ee's in Sevierville opens soon! We answer your burning questions about the gas station

Buc-ee's Sevierville is officially open and welcoming travelers and super fans to its mega gas station convenience store.

On June 26, Buc-ee's hosted its grand opening, welcoming the public starting at 6 a.m. at 170 Buc-ee's Boulevard off of Interstate 40 exit 407.

Guests bought beaver merchandise, stocked up on pounds of beef jerky and checked out the super clean bathrooms.

• The massive size of the store
• There's the now iconic beaver mascot whose loveable cartoon face is plastered all over the gas stations and merchandise.
• The beef jerky wall literally has a sign that says "World Famous Jerky" on it.
• The branded candy and snacks are prominently displayed, especially the Beaver Nuggets.
• The barbeque and brisket chopped daily (and the "fresh hot brisket on the board!" chant you'll hear inside stores) might be the most popular food.
• The sheer amount of gas pumps. The Sevierville location will have 120 pumps, including diesel and 22 electric vehicle stations.
• Clean, large and in charge, the bathrooms are a major reason to stop at the travel centers.
• The giant car wash at the Sevierville location will be a huge attraction. Along with one in Texas, the 250-foot car was will be one of the longest in the country.

Why is the Buc-ee's mascot a beaver?

Buc-ee's founder Arch "Beaver" Aplin III created the mascot based on his childhood nickname, inspired by old toothpaste commercials for Ipana featuring the cartoon character Bucky Beaver .

The nickname stuck with him and he incorporated it into his gas station chain.

Where is Buc-ee's headquarted?

Buc-ee's is headquartered in Lake Jackson, Texas, which is south of Houston.

Buc-ee's opened its first store in 1982 on the border of Lake Jackson and Clute, Texas.

Why are the Buc-ee's gas stations so big?

Some of the Buc-ee's stores are quite small. These smaller stores are mostly found in Buc-ee's home state of Texas, resembling a typical gas station.

However, the travel centers are where Buc-ee's gets its reputation for bigger and better.

These stores are monstrous in size. The Buc-ee's in Crossville, Tennessee, is 53,400 square feet , and the largest one so far is in New Braunfels, Texas , at over 66,000 square feet.

To put that in perspective, an American football field is 57,600 s quare feet !

The Sevierville location is the biggest Buc-ee's at 74,000 square feet . However, it will be surpassed by the one being built in Luling, Texas, by 1,000 square feet.

What are Buc-ee's gas prices?

Buc-ee's was once sued in Alabama for having prices that were too l ow .

On June 20, Buc-ee's in Crossville had gas for $2.84 a gallon for regular and $3.12 for diesel, according to user submissions on gasbuddy.com .

The average in Tennessee that day was $3.15 for regular and $3.60 for diesel, according to AAA .

Why did Buc-ee's choose Sevierville?

The reason is simple: Sevierville is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the country.

With Gatlinburg, Dollywood and Great Smoky Mountains National Park nearby, it's a no-brainer to put a popular gas station in the most visited area of Tennessee.

Even with fewer visitors last year, Great Smoky Mountains National Park remains the most-visited national park in the country .

Will Buc-ee's come to Knoxville?

Unfortunately, it seems that Buc-ee's isn't planning any new locations in East Tennessee.

"With this location, we are pretty much at the eastern end; maybe we need to start back at the western end," Buc-ee's spokesperson Stan Beard told Knox News earlier this year.

Beard said the next Buc-ee's in the state will be in Murfreesboro with construction starting soon. There's another one planned for Clarksville .

What kind of jobs can you get at Buc-ee's?

Buc-ee's is hiring for those eager to work for the beaver. The Sevierville location is hiring as of June 20 for cashier, food service associate, grocery stocker, gift/merchandise associate, restroom attendant and janitorial positions.

Full-time jobs range in pay from $17 to $20 an hour and come with medical, dental and vision insurance, 401(k) match and three weeks of paid time off.

How many Buc-ee's locations are there?

There are 58 Buc-ee's locations across Texas, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina and Tennessee. Sevierville will be the 45th location.

Are truckers and 18-wheelers allowed at Buc-ee's?

Buc-ee's doesn't allow big 18-wheel trucks at the gas station.

"So, the way we are set up, we are set up for the family traveler," director of operations Josh Smith told Knox News. "So … we don't have the space or the capacity to hold 18-wheelers in the lot. We respect them. We thank them for what they do. Unfortunately, we're just not designed to have 18-wheeler traffic in the parking lot."
