Nestled at the foot of Mount Etna, Catania is the second-largest city in Sicily, whose history is shaped by the ever-present volcano. Volcanic eruptions devastated the city on many occasions, including the 1669 eruption. It produced lava flows that destroyed villages and overwhelmed the city of Catania. However, the city’s proximity to Etna also means highly fertile volcanic soil, perfect for growing citrus fruits, fruit trees, vegetables, and grapes.
The mountain’s immediate slopes provide fertile grounds for orchards and vineyards, producing some of the best wines in the world. The Catania area, including the macro part of Mount Etna, has successfully produced Etna Rosso DOC for decades. Born in 1968, the Etna DOC was the first DOC in the Sicily region and one of the oldest in Italy.
No trip to this Sicilian area will be complete without a wine tour and tasting authentic Etna wine paired with delicious Sicilian food. You can also visit rooftop bars and shops that offer the best wine tasting in Catania if you’re looking for fun things to do at night in the city. If you plan to arrive early, drop off your bags at Catania Bounce luggage storage to experience the most authentic Sicilian tradition without burden.

The best wine tours from Catania, Sicily – Mount Etna wine tastings
Catania is one of the most underrated Italian cities. Located in eastern Sicily, in the shadow of Mount Etna, its fate is sealed by volcanic eruptions. However, Catania’s proximity to Etna also translates to a unique soil. The volcano’s presence and taste forever mark the area’s wine production. Therefore, if you are exploring this side of Sicily, join one or more wine tours from Catania and discover the region’s smoky wines.
The Mount Etna eruptions enrich the soil in unique ways, and that’s why the area produces some of the best wines worldwide. Growing grapes and making wine -red and white- on the slopes of Mount Etna results in delicious wine that you can’t taste elsewhere in Europe. The Etna DOC is the oldest in Sicily and among the oldest in Italy. The red Etna Rosso is the most famous wine in the region, usually made of the Nerello Mascalese grape variety (80%) and up to 20% of Nerello Cappuccio grapes.
So, in this article, you will find the best wine tastings in Catania , together with info and prices. I preferred to split this article into two sections. The first section is dedicated to people willing to taste as much Sicilian wine as possible. That said, the sightseeing part is less present in these tours. On the other hand, if you are more into exploring the region and sipping an occasional glass of wine, the second section is more for you.
So, let’s start with the best Catania wine tastings and what to expect from them.

The best wine tours from Catania for wine lovers
As I stated above, in this section, you will find Catania wine tours dealing exclusively with wine tastings in various wineries. While you will see some of Sicily’s landscape, you probably won’t have much time to explore the area. The goal is to taste as much Etna wine as possible and get a complete overview of its unique taste.
The three best Etna wineries (Private tour)
For dedicated wine lovers, that’s the top Etna wine tasting tour you can take in Sicily. Your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Catania (available also from Messina) and drive you to three fantastic wineries in Etna . However, this wine tour is even more remarkable because you can taste unlimited wine . Specifically, you’ll taste four wines from every winery. Last but not least, after the tour’s end, your guide will drive you back to your hotel. Please keep in mind that this is a private tour: that said, while its price is slightly elevated, the tour will be just for you and your friends. This looks like a private park, and you’ll stroll through the orange plantation, where you’ll learn about the different kinds of citrus. Then, inside the villa, you’ll meet with a sommelier who’ll explain the wine-making process to you.
This is an estate owned for centuries by the same family, and at the tour’s end, you’ll taste their delicious wines together with a traditional Sicilian lunch. After this private tour finishes, the guide will bring you back to your hotel in Catania.
Despite its elevated price, it’s one of the best wine tours from Catania, and it’s a fantastic experience overall.

Mount Etna wine tour
If you’re on a tight budget on your journey to Catania but still like to taste some wine from Etna’s soil, there’s also a very affordable wine tour . If you rent a car in Sicily, it’s easy to reach it; on the other hand, if you use public transport (or taxi), make sure to see your transportation options. See the exact location on the tour’s page.
So, in this winery visit, you’ll taste 4 to 7 different wines, and a sommelier will guide you through the estate’s cellars. There’s also a light lunch included, consisting of cheese, pork, and cannolo.
Duration : 1,5-2 hours .

The best wine tours from Catania, Sicily, for explorers
The second section of this travel guide to the best wine-tasting tours from Catania is all about exploring the region. Of course, there are various stops for wine tasting, but here, wine is a nice extra for your day trip in Sicily. The focus is towns and villages, and there are only occasional stops for a glass of Sicilian wine. If you are more into exploring the region and having a glass here and there, this section will cover your travel needs.
Godfather private guided tour with wine-tasting
While it is an old cliche to associate Sicily exclusively with the Mafia, there’s one great tour in the region for movie lovers. If you are a fan of Coppola’s iconic Godfather movies , this tour from Catania is for you. Your guide will pick you up from your Catania hotel and, for the next 6 to 8 hours, will drive you to the movie’s iconic locations.
You will start from Savoca, where the iconic Bar Vitelli is, and continue to Santa Lucia church, where Michael Corleone married. After strolling through the streets of Savoca, you’ll stop for a glass of wine before continuing to Forza D’Agro and the Norman Castle with its stunning views. Your guide will share plenty of facts about the movie, and after the tour’s end, you can choose to have dinner at a local restaurant, including a delicious Sicilian wine tasting .
After a long day out and about, your guide will drive you back to your hotel in Catania. That’s a fantastic tour, and it’s also a private one.

Claudia, your host, opens her house in downtown Catania to show you how to cook a proper Sicilian meal . Using fresh and raw products from Sicily, you’ll learn how to prepare fish and vegetables bought from the local market.
The four-course meal you’ll prepare with Claudia will consist of tomatoes, eggplants, anchovies, various vegetables, and pannacotta. In addition, of course, the meal includes a tasting of Sicilian wines.

If you’d like to combine a visit to Mount Etna and wine tasting , this is one of the best tours you can have in the region. Start your day early in the morning and head towards the iconic Rifugio Sapienza, Etna’s most famous shelter. Afterward, you’ll walk along natural paths and visit one of the volcano’s craters. Then, you can decide to stay in that area, which is at 2,000 meters, or alternatively book the high altitude option. The latter means you’ll have to ride a cable car, and a 4×4 vehicle will bring you up to 2,900 meters at Torre del Filosofo.
Then, together with your guide, you’ll explore a lava cave, and at the tour’s end, you’ll stop at a winery for tasting, including one sparkling and four still wines. A light meal is included, and afterward, the guide will drive you back to your accommodation in Catania.

Etna and Taormina wine tour (day trip)
Now, while this day trip from Catania follows an identical route to the one above, this tour has a bonus: it will bring you to the world-famous Taormina , the city that even Goethe fell in love with. Located on dramatic cliffs and enjoying fantastic views of the open sea, Taormina is a gem. Despite being compact in size, it’s one of the most beautiful towns you’ll see in Sicily.
While the exploration of Mount Etna and Taormina is at the heart of this tour, this doesn’t mean that there’s not some wine included. On the contrary, after a tiring day walking on Etna’s slopes and before strolling through Taormina’s streets, you’ll stop at a restaurant for a quick lunch and wine tasting. Then, after concluding your Taormina wine tour and spending time in the city, the tour guide will drive you back to Catania.

Etna Urban Winery
An urban oasis in the heart of the metropolitan area that used to be the center of the wine region, at Etna Urban winery we take pride in our heritage and the beauty of the natural landscape that makes our winemaking operations possible. We take seriously the responsibility to both protect this precious resource and pass on our wine-making traditions to future generations
Etna Urban Winery gives the visitor the opportunity to enjoy the history of Etna wine making in Sicily, to visit an urban vineyard, to learn about the territory and to taste four Etna wines in a unique historical urban environment.
The experience
Vineyard trail.
Walk our urban vineyards with us or at your own pace while discovering dry stone walls and an the bafflng “Cuba di Vigna Grande” (very old domed building). You will also walk through one of the few oak forests still in the area (now protected) and an olive grove.
Gourmet tasting
Enjoy and experience the quality of the wines born on the slopes of Mount Etna along with a selection of gourmet food created by the outstanding local chef Carlo Sichel. Wine selection includes our “Vigna Grande” IGT Nerello Mascalase as well as wines from partner wineries (e.g. Tenuta delle Terre Nere, Tenuta di Fessina, Masseria Setteporte, Murgo, Cantina Russo, Famiglia Statella, Murgo, Eudes and Nicola Gumina)
Learn about the traditional way to produce wine in Sicily. You will visit our 17th century Palmento (winery) that is host to two 10,000-litre wooden barrels and an old wine press that was once able to process around 8 tons of grapes!
Face the difficult choice of whether to relax around a lovely Sicilian courtyard, surrounded by our collection of succulents and hydrangeas, or lay down while looking at Etna Mountain and enjoying the summer breeze. Do not worry – both options include an exquisite and refreshing glass of wine.
Let the children have their own fun by looking for different stone animals made by a local artist. We have hidden them around the winery along the adult’s track so look up and down to help them find them. Ask for the details at the entrance of the winery.

Editor’s Note: This Sicily itinerary is presented as a first-person perspective from one of our frequent traveling contributors, Kristen Oliveri. Learn about her first-hand experience and recommendations for navigating Sicily from a wine lover’s perspective. This itinerary includes information on traveling to and around Sicily, various wine regions worth visiting, and specific wineries and tours that offer unique experiences.
Hotels in Catania
Luxury accommodation in mount etna, cantine russo winery, where to dine in taormina, welcome to the sicilian food & drink revolution.
This trip to Sicily is going to be special.
I had visited once before, writing about the incredibly diverse wine region, but now I had the opportunity to take my husband whose family immigrated to the US from Sicily before landing in Brooklyn three generations ago. We knew that his grandfather was born and raised in Catania , so we structured the trip as such that we would begin there and continue for further exploration throughout Mount Etna and Taormina , stopping to eat and drink along the way.

Sicily is still an incredibly untouched region for tourism in many ways and I experienced that the first time I was there.

Visiting Sicily Travel Logistics
As you read on, we’ll explore the ins and outs of this Mediterranean gem, from the bustling major airports to the most efficient ways to navigate the island. We’ll also share our handpicked selection of luxurious hotel options tailored to wine enthusiasts, as well as other essential information to make your Sicilian adventure a trip to remember.
Transportation: The Truth About Traveling in Sicily
Getting to Sicily and navigating travel within it can be precarious, to say the least.
We chose a US air carrier (Delta) to fly directly into Rome ( check flight prices here on Kayak ) where we later transferred to Catania . As per our travel agent’s suggestions, we began our trip there, Sicily’s second-largest city, a working town with a younger vibe that is going through a major culinary revolution.
To make the most of my first few days in a new region while fighting jet-lag, I often use the app TimeShifter to help begin setting my body clock to my destination’s time before the trip so I can maximize my time.
We were informed that the best way to get around once there was to rent a car . It quickly became clear that driving in Italy can be intimidating, a challenge to say the least. Despite this, it’s still the best option for flexibility. Just pace yourself
While we often relied heavily on Google Maps during our road trip, we also printed out addresses and directions from place to place (Google Maps didn’t have it all) and we also opted for a navigation system in our rental car, should we need it. Given the intricacies of the roads and lack of street signs, I would highly recommend the three-tiered approach.
While you can easily fly between main cities within Sicily, we constructed this itinerary to begin in Catania and then drive to Mount Etna where we would spend the bulk of our time exploring wineries and restaurants and then end in the popular town of Taormina , where we could park the car in the hotel and get around mostly on foot.
It’s worth noting that while all of Sicily speaks traditional Italian (the days of dialect are not as prevalent as they were a few generations ago) many people do speak English fluently, even in the most remote places. Still, be armed with Italian phrases including greetings, asking where the bathroom is and be sure to know how to thank someone after they have helped you.
Essential Italian and Sicilian Phrases to Know when Visiting Sicily
If you are visiting Sicily, here are some essential Italian phrases that could be helpful:
Ciao – Hello/Goodbye
Buongiorno – Good morning/Good day
Grazie – Thank you
Per favore – Please
Mi scusi – Excuse me (formal)
Parla inglese? – Do you speak English?
Quanto costa? – How much does it cost?
Dove si trova? – Where is it located?
Vorrei ordinare – I would like to order
Posso pagare con la carta di credito? – Can I pay with a credit card?
It is also a good idea to learn some basic Sicilian phrases as well, since Sicilian is a distinct language from Italian and is widely spoken on the island. Some common Sicilian phrases include:
Salutamu tutti – Hello everyone
Bedda – Beautiful (used to describe things or people)
Cumpari – Friend (male)
Cumari – Friend (female)
Ci videmu – See you later
Tanti auguri – Best wishes
Chistu è sangu – This is blood (a way to say “this is serious”)
Scurdammo – Let’s forget it
Un ti preoccupari – Don’t worry about it.
The spring and fall seasons tend to have the most temperate weather in Sicily, making the trips more enjoyable while avoiding any extreme heat. Most of the hotels, agriturismos, and accommodations either at or near wineries rarely have air conditioning. While some are beginning to incorporate AC into their rooms, most do not, so it’s better to avoid that situation. I have been to Sicily twice in July and I would caution against it. Months like April, May, September, and October are the way to go.

Stop #1: Catania
Book catania wine tours & activities ahead of time, where to eat and drink.
After arriving in Catania and fighting dreaded jet-lag, we had a quick shower and hit the town to see the famous fish market. We took a stroll through the market and had dinner at the restaurant Mm!!, which artfully prepared fresh seafood in every way imaginable: raw, grilled and fried.
![wine tasting tour catania Where to Eat in Sicily - Winetraveler.com Sicily Itinerary](https://www.winetraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/seafood-in-sicily-kristen-winetraveler.jpg)
Seafood platters with raw fish are often the star of a dinner table in Sicily . They marinate the fresh fish ever so lightly and dress it with olive oil, lemon, pepper and sea salt. In true mediterranean style, the lemon and oil tenderizes the fish, just like ceviche, and adds flavor without detracting from the taste and freshness of the fish itself.
Within the city, the relatively new dedication to elevated cuisine was on display. Catania is currently undergoing a true culinary renaissance with restaurants like Ostier and Sapio (awarded a one-Michelin star) which are redefining the way Sicilians eat today. Once places for more casual dining, these two restaurants in particular offer fine dining experiences with true Sicilian flair.
When it comes to accommodations in Catania , it is slightly lacking in moderate to upscale options, so we choose to spend only a few nights in town at a local apartment rental. Some alternative, higher-end hotel options include Hotel Villa del Basco and Il Principe Hotel .
![wine tasting tour catania Visiting Mount Etna in Sicily - Winetraveler.com](https://www.winetraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/etna-sicily-itinerary-kristen-winetraveler.jpg)
Stop #2: Head to Mount Etna
Book mount etna wine tours & things to do ahead of time.
While Catania is filled with raw energy and excitement, once we were well fed, we were itching to head to the quieter region of Mount Etna to continue our wine and food exploration.
Up in the mountains, the volcanic vistas are nothing short of life-changing. You can feel the fresh breeze sweep over the mountainous terrain even on the warmest of days. Another reason we chose to go to Mount Etna is for their daily breakfast spreads. There are a range of interesting lodging options, many on vineyard properties themselves, that showcase local breakfast specialties with everything from fruit and yogurt to juice bars to warmly cooked eggs, baked goods, Italian meats, and fresh vegetables.
![wine tasting tour catania Wineries and Vineyards to Visit in Sicily - Winetraveler.com](https://www.winetraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/sicily-vineyard-kristen.jpg)
Etna Wineries to Visit
Our first transformative breakfast experience happened at Tenuta di Fessina , a boutique agriturismo, and winery owned by winemaker and proprietor, Sylvia Maestrelli. She bought the land back in 2007 after 18 families who previously owned it and started her organic vineyard that produces 90,000 bottles per year with eight different varietals. Her winemaking philosophy is simple: she wanted to produce feminine, crisp wine that was complex. After our private tasting on the property, we agreed that she achieved that and then some.
During our stay at Tenuta di Fessina, we also made a trip to Planeta Winery in Etna run by Hungarian winemaker Patricia Toth , who is truly Sicilian in spirit. The vineyard spans 10.8 hectares and began its first production in 2009. Toth came to the property where she was dedicated to her pursuit of volcanic-style winemaking.
Guests travel to the Planeta year-round for tours and tastings. After we explored the vineyard and had our tasting with Toth, we sat down for a proper Sicilian lunch in their tasting room which included fresh olives, cheese, meats, crackers and vegetables paired with more of their wines.
While staying at Tenuta di Fessina, we also tried other local eateries like Dai Pennisi in Linguaglossa, which is a popular local butcher shop with a sit-down restaurant that makes grilled meats and traditional eggplant dishes. Their deceptively simple preparation wowed us with every bite. Other wineries worth noting in the region include Frank Cornelissen that produces intriguing natural wines.
We also spent time at Palmento Costanzo, which produces wines within the Parco dell’Etna (Etna Park). The winery was renovated and restored in 2011, carried out according to the principles of bio-architecture. The organic vineyard now spans ten hectares, built on a series of terraces made of dry lava stones found in the region. They produce a variety of wine that we felt connected to (perhaps due to the fact my husband’s family name was the same as the family’s owner), namely the Mofete Bianco 2018 that we sent home to fill our wine cellar with.
![wine tasting tour catania Luxury Hotels in Sicily - Winetraveler.com](https://www.winetraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/sicily-spread-kristen.jpg)
As world travelers, my husband and I do love a little luxury in our lives. We found the understated elegance we were looking for at Villa Neri Resort & Spa in the Etna region and let ourselves completely indulge.
The accommodations were excellent and geared more towards the American traveler with amenities like incredible air conditioning and other creature comforts, plus a wonderful pool area complete with loungers and an outdoor restaurant.
The restaurant in the hotel, Le Dodici Fontane , offers an elegant dining experience curated by head chef Elia Russo. The menu wows with sensory dishes and different tasting options. We chose one that took us on a culinary journey that mixed traditional Sicilian ingredients with a more elevated, new-age way of executing dishes.
Following our stay at Villa Neri, we spent a night at Monaci delle Terre Nere that provided us with a holistic, sustainable experience from beginning to end. Part of the Slow Food International movement in Italy with organic, local, sustainable options, this boutique hotel has one of the most beautiful outdoor restaurants overlooking a luxurious pool and garden area.
We enjoyed a typical al fresco Sicilian lunch there including linguine vongole and a tomato and mozzarella salad paired with a fresh, crisp Sicilian white wine from Mount Etna. Dinner was another special experience at Locanda Nerello on the property where we took the server’s recommendations with vegetable dishes including the beloved eggplant, as well as a pasta and meat dish, all paired with Sicilian wine. We ended that meal with a mouthwatering, delicate cannoli, smaller in size then I have seen back home, but packed with love that made each bite taste like heaven.
Our morning breakfast buffet was served on the top of the hill, a wonderful way for us to get a little exercise without foregoing a meal. Afterward, we went back to our room with a private garden where we had a private yoga instructor come and give us a wonderful 60-minute yoga class, with nature as our backdrop.
Our final two evenings in the region were spent at Relais San Giuliano . This Italian oasis hotel felt like a dream. It was home to a quaint and warm spa where we each got a treatment and a restaurant on property with one of the best meals we had– a simple roast beef with fresh figs.
On our final afternoon in the area, we decided to simply lounge by the pool and stay put, but we weren’t sure if we wanted to eat at the restaurant on the property again. We spoke to the hotel manager who said they would be happy to coordinate a poolside luncheon that featured “tavola calda” which roughly translates to “hot table.” In practice, it essentially means Sicilian street food like arancini, versions of Stromboli, pizzette (mini pizzas) and other fried goodness. We even finished the meal with a pistachio flavored granita, the Sicilian dessert of choice and more local wine, discussing how we finally got the hang of the Sicilian lifestyle.
Stop #3: Taormina
Schedule the best things to do in taormina.
Our final stop on our week-long journey in Sicily was Taormina . I hadn’t had the pleasure of visiting on my first trip, so we decided to end our experience in a more touristic part of Sicily where we could sneak in a bit of shopping and restaurant and bar hopping before heading back to reality.
The hotels in Taormina are more expensive given its popularity, so we went with a standard hotel close to the heart of town so that we could park the car and leave it there for a while as my husband was certainly tired of driving like a Sicilian.
We chose the Grand Hotel Miramare , nestled into the side of a cliff with beautiful views of the sea. The standard room was basic but we didn’t spend much time there. Instead, we toured the local town, shopping and eating any chance we could get—trying everything from gelato to cannolis, washing them down with refreshing Aperol spritzes.
Wineries near Taormina
If shopping and bar hopping isn’t quite your thing, or you simply aren’t done tasting fantastic Sicilian wine, here are some of the best wineries to visit near Taormina. Note that not all wineries are necessarily in Taormina proper, but they are close enough to the accommodations we just mentioned accessible by rental car.
Gambino Vini
This winery is situated on the slopes of Mount Etna and offers breathtaking views of the volcano. They specialize in producing high-quality wines using traditional and modern techniques. They offer wine tastings with local food pairings and also provide guided tours of their vineyards and cellars.
Donnafugata Winery
Donnafugata is a family-owned winery located in the historic town of Marsala. They produce a wide range of wines using both native and international grape varieties. The winery offers guided tours of their vineyards and cellars, as well as wine tastings paired with local cheeses and meats.
Benanti Winery
Benanti is a historic winery located in the town of Viagrande, just a short drive from Taormina. They specialize in producing wines made from native grape varieties, including the famous Etna Rosso.
Cantine Russo is a family-owned winery located in the town of Solicchiata, near the base of Mount Etna. They produce a range of wines made from local grape varieties, including one of our favorites, Nerello Mascalese.
For our final meal before heading home, we dined at Villa Zuccaro and kept it simple with our ordering. We split a bowl of spaghetti vongole, a spicy salami pizza made in a brick oven and a bottle of Nero D’Avola .
Our final meal was simple, yet deeply satisfying, exactly how I felt about the trip itself.
Tips for Visiting Sicily
Make appointments and schedule tours at wineries that you would like to visit ahead of time, especially in their main seasons of the spring and fall. Book lunches at a handful of wineries as well so that you can taste and eat at the same time, which takes the guesswork out of finding food in remote locations after your hunger has kicked in after a long morning of wine tasting.
Stay at boutique agriturismos on vineyards for the holistic wine experience. Not to mention they often have the best breakfast spreads.
Schedule some wellness time in between meals and tastings. Several of the boutique hotels offer private yoga classes or nature walks (or simply some pool time if it’s warm enough) so that you can add in a holistic element to your trip.
Save your shopping for Taormina, that has everything from beautiful tapestries to classic souvenirs and unforgettable local citrus-themed perfumes.
More Essential Wine Regions & Towns to Visit within Sicily Wine Country
Venture to the foothills of the majestic Mount Etna, where vineyards thrive on the mineral-rich volcanic soil. Etna DOC is renowned for its elegant reds and crisp whites, offering a unique tasting experience that beautifully reflects the terroir’s remarkable character.
Embrace the charm of Vittoria, a picturesque wine region in southeastern Sicily. Celebrated for its flagship Cerasuolo di Vittoria, a harmonious blend of Nero d’Avola and Frappato grapes, this destination is a must-visit for those seeking the perfect balance of fruit and spice.
Savor the exquisite flavors of Marsala, a historical coastal town in western Sicily. Home to the world-famous fortified wine, Marsala offers a delightful journey through centuries of vinicultural tradition, from the golden-hued dry styles to the velvety sweet delights.
Explore the sun-kissed Baroque town of Noto, nestled in southeastern Sicily. This enchanting locale is famed for its Moscato di Noto, a luscious dessert wine that bursts with fragrant floral notes and seductive hints of honey and apricot.
Immerse yourself in the lesser-known but equally captivating region of Salaparuta, located in southwestern Sicily. Here, you’ll encounter diverse microclimates and terroirs that yield an intriguing array of wines, from the full-bodied Nero d’Avola to the bright and zesty Grillo.
Books on Sicilian Wine
PALMENTO , ROBERT CAMUTO
A fun romp through the vineyards of Sicily, this writer interviews many of the winemakers who have been instrumental in bringing Sicilian wine to the forefront of winemaking.
THE WORLD OF SICILIAN WINE , BILL NESTO & FRANCES DI SAVINO
This book is thorough and contains much about the wine history and how it intertwines with the history of the island as a whole. A good summary and reference guide for the subject matter. This is not a travel book, but a real look at Sicily for people who want to delve a little deeper.
THE VINE WHISPERER , FILIPPO TESTA
This winemaker owns his family estate but only because he fought for it when local “undesirables” wanted his land. A tale of courage and heart-warming passion, with local wine as a backdrop. B & N carries the book.

Green countryside near the medieval town of Volterra (province of Pisa) Tuscany
Pisa attracts more than five million tourists yearly to see its world-famous Leaning Tower. But few realize this proverbial “half-day city” is the gateway to Terre di Pisa, one of Italy's newest and most exciting DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) wine appellations.
This up-and-coming wine region offers an unforgettable experience for wine lovers who want to travel slowly and escape the crowds pervasive in many Italian cities.
Imagine rolling Tuscan hills, vineyards stretching toward the horizon, and passionate winemakers eager to share their craft and explain how their wines are shaped by the contours of the land and centuries of history.
Throughout the province, wine lovers can sip regional wines and savor local food products and dishes, creating a truly Tuscan culinary adventure.
The Wines Of Terre di Pisa: A World of Varietals Awaits
Logo of Terre di Pisa
The Terre di Pisa DOC appellation was established in 2011, attesting to the unique character of the wines.
In 2018, 10 producers formed the Terre di Pisa Wine Consortium to raise awareness and promote the quality of these regional wines; the number has now grown to 19 in 2024.

‘suicide squad: kill the justice league’ ends its weekly updates, a promising new update on silo season 2 on apple tv plus.
Terre di Pisa wines offer a symphony of flavors. The carefully controlled Terre di Pisa DOC appellation includes Terre di Pisa Bianco, Terre di Pisa Vermentino, Terre di Pisa Rosato, Terre di Pisa Rosso, and Terre di Pisa Sangiovese.
Visitors can explore reds like Sangiovese, the king grape of the region, or whites like Vermentino. They can also indulge in rosės and sparkling wines.
Most high-quality wines with the Terre di Pisa DOC label are reds with at least 95% Sangiovese grapes. Winemakers rely on these and other indigenous grapes to produce interesting blends with international varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah.
This unique hyper-local terroir is blessed with sandy soil rich in limestone and clay. Millions of years ago, the land was part of the ocean, so seeing whole seashells as you walk among the vineyards is common. Some winemakers even find marine fossils under the soil dating back to this heritage.
The hills and valleys of Terre di Pisa are conducive to viniculture because of the area’s temperate climate, which has warm days, cool nights, moderate rainfall, and ocean breezes from the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea year-round. The wines offer minerality and salinity.
Beyond the Leaning Tower: Getting There and Where To Stay
Map of the provinces of Tuscany
Pisa is both the name of this province and its better-known capital city. While wine (along with the tilted tower) takes center stage, Terre di Pisa offers many diverse experiences.
Tourists can meander the two-lane roads traversing the countryside by car and discover this less-traveled province’s cultural, historical, and epicurean riches.
Terre di Pisa wineries are committed to sustainable practices, ensuring the land thrives for future generations. So, it’s not surprising that their farm stays offer a chance to unplug, reconnect with nature, and experience the simple pleasures of rural life.
Instead of large cookie-cutter hotels, many wineries offer rustic Tuscan farm-like accommodations. These small agriturismos can serve as a base for visiting some of the more than 40 wineries in the region or excursions to interesting towns and small villages nearby.
San Miniato, perched on three small hills, is best known for its white truffles, celebrated at a National White Truffle Festival held each November. Pontedera is the birthplace of the iconic Vespa motor scooter and the locale of its historic Piaggio factory and museum. The colorful art city of Peccioli was named the most beautiful village ( borgo) in Italy in 2024.
A few more of the many places worthy of visits include the architecturally stunning landscape of Teatro del Silenzio in Lajatico, the hometown of tenor Andrea Bocelli; the Roman Theater and Baths in Volterra; and the sandy beaches of Marina di Pisa.
10 Terre di Pisa Wineries That Host Guests
Vineyards of Merlot, Cabernet, and Sangiovese on the Pisan hills of Peccioli produce red, white, and ... [+] rosé wines.
Rural accommodations like those in the province of Pisa are generally restored rather than remodeled to preserve their Tuscan history and ambiance.
Coupled with direct sales from their wine shops, farm stays help provide a reliable income stream when nature compromises crops and creates unique opportunities for guests.
Here is a sampling of some Terre di Pisa wineries that host guests. In addition to finding a sense of place on-site, wine tourists typically visit other wineries and interesting towns nearby.
Badia di Morrona
The 600-acre Badia di Morrona estate, located amidst sloping hills between Terricciola and Casciana Terme, is one of the oldest wineries in Tuscany. It offers tours, tastings of its wines and EVO olive oil (with light lunch), and visits to its historic Benedictine abbey, the summer residence of the Bishops of Volterra in the late 15th century.
Each of six fully-equipped restored farmhouses, divided into villas and apartments, has swimming pools and is surrounded by greenery.
Castelvecchio Socita’Agricola
Located in the town of Terricciola in the Pisan hills, the family-run Castelvecchio Societa’Agricola has 10 hectares of vineyards managed by women. The winery offers cellar visits and tastings paired with local cold cuts, cheeses, bruschetta, and other seasonal products, as well as lunch or dinner of local Tuscan cuisine.
Visitors can arrange stays in either a restored barn or a portion of the original farmhouse restored by the family that offers views of the hills.
Fattoria Varramista
The heart of the 400-acre Fattoria di Varramista in Montopoli is an ancient villa (purchased by the Piaggio-Agnelli family in 1953) once the residence of Enrico Piaggio, famous for the Vespa brand. Varramista offers tours of the villa, the Italian garden, the cellars and vineyards, and tastings of the estate’s wine and EVO olive oil accompanied by Tuscan products.
Three farmhouses on the estate have private pools surrounded by olive groves; another is in the park near the manor. Guests at these residences can also hire mountain bikes, participate in cooking classes, and hire private chefs and/or drivers.
Villa Cosmiana
Sited on a gentle hill in Peccioli, this 17th-century, neoclassical Villa Cosmiana became part of the Antinori family estate in 1783. Abandoned in 1933, its new owners recently meticulously restored it to preserve its rich historical and artistic legacy. An English park with Italianate gardens surrounds the villa, along with 15 vineyards on 11 hectares. Wine tastings begin with a tour of the villa and its winemaking facilities before a light lunch.
The estate has three suites in the villa and four in the Fattoria (farm) that can be booked with a tasting dinner or discovery day.
Villa Saletta
Although wine production on this 1,760-acre working estate can be traced back to 980 AD, Villa Saletta is a modern, boutique winery. Located in a medieval village with ancient farmhouses in Palaia, the family owners lovingly restored a property that had fallen into ruin. Visitors can enjoy wine tastings, visits to the winery and cantina, or a guided tour of the magnificent borgo.
Three villas have been renovated using traditional techniques, materials from the region, and modern luxury. The largest can accommodate up to 14 guests.
Pieve de’ Pitti
Located in the hills of Terricola, Pieve de’ Pitti is named after the Florentine Pitti family, which owned the estate until the end of the 17th century. The winery offers tours of the cellar and vineyards, wine tasting, and creative cooking courses.
Guests can stay in one of the five rooms of the Villa (a single large farmhouse surrounded by vineyards) or in one of three self-catering apartments in the Il Poggetto country house. The property also hosts weddings and special occasion parties.
Tenuta di Ghizzano
Tenuta di Ghizzano is an organic and biodynamic farm of 280 hectares, 18 of which are vineyards. The winery is located in the town of Ghizzano, a small frazione of Peccioli with a population of just over 300 people. The estate has vineyards, olive trees, cereal crops, woods, and poplar groves and hosts a range of “experiences,” from tastings to tours to personalized visits.
The two-story Villa Ginevra, a contemporary farmhouse immersed in the countryside, is a beautifully appointed four-bedroom residence filled with art and antiques. It offers a balcony overlooking the scenic hills.
Le Palaie Farm is located on a 150-hectare estate in Peccioli surrounding a 17th-century manor house. In addition to olive groves, arable land has been set aside to preserve the fauna and insects that help repopulate the environment. The winery also hosts special events, including weddings, tastings, and cellar visits.
The recently renovated manor house has seven apartments of different sizes and accommodations in another four independent houses.
Fattoria di Fibbiano
Fattoria Fibbiano is located in Terricola between the hills of Pisa and Volterra. The Cantoni family purchased the farm in 1997. The house's foundation was built in 1707 and is surrounded by vineyards, some over 100 years old. The property is home to three generations of this family. In addition to tastings, tours of the vineyards, picnics, Vespa adventures, and cooking lessons, guests learn about the architectural features of the historic farm. During the harvest, guests can experience olive and grape picking.
Apartments are located in the same building where the family lives. A communal vaulted living room and beautiful pool with panoramic views bring people together for conversation.
Podere la Chiesa
Podere La Chiesa is an ultra-contemporary winery that might be mistaken for an art museum. Located in Terricciola, the winery is an architectural masterpiece surrounded by the Tuscan countryside. The one million-year-old soil is rich in limestone, sand, and clay. The winery offers guided tours and tastings. In September, guests can participate in the 50-year-old Grape and Wine Festival held in Terricciola.
The winery is close to the little town of Casanova, which has a small BnB and Michelin-starred restaurant.
Don’t Forget the Leaning Tower
The Leaning Tower of Pisa is located in Piazza dei Miracoli, along with the Cathedral and ... [+] Baptistery.
Visitors to Terre di Pisa will be treated to an unforgettable experience that blends rolling hills with exceptional wines and warm hospitality.
But a half-day dedicated to the iconic Leaning Tower and the Piazza dei Miracoli is a must for any visitor.
Getting There
Getting to Terre di Pisa is convenient. International and domestic travelers can arrive through Pisa International Airport (Galileo Galilei Airport, named after the famous scientist born in Pisa).
Visitors also can arrive at the Pisa Centrale station from Florence via high-speed train in about 45 minutes. Auto rentals are available both at the airport and train station.
