Ken is so knowledgeable regarding the area...it’s so much more than just celebs, he’ll show you hidden secret locations in Malibu exclusive to his Tour company only. The Malibu was the ultimate highlight of my stay in California. See a different side of L.A. than just the standard tourist attractions that all the other tour companies show you. Private wine tour.

For bachelorette parties, corporate events, birthdays, or other private events, a private wine tour will enable you and a much larger group to either do a wine tasting hike or a 4×4 vineyard tour together, with no outside parties able to book spots with your group!

This can be great for an experience that will more intimately accommodate you and your party. Have a group over 5 people? Rent multiple 4×4 vehicles with plenty of snacks and beverages for a more sizable group.

Lunch or further snacks may be catered in for your event, with our preferred local catering company, Blue Table, offering choices of sandwiches, salads, cheese and charcuterie boards, and dessert options for a party that may coincide with lunch or dinner.

5 Great Wine Tasting Day Trips Close to Los Angeles

wine tours in los angeles

This article is presented by Grape Adventures Wine Tours, departing from Los Angeles and surrounding areas daily. Ready to visit? Let us take you there! Book now at Wine Tours / Grape Adventures

Did you know just outside of Los Angeles you will find some of the most intriguing and hidden, award-winning wine regions in the country?

Whether you’re a local or a visitor, sometimes all you need is a day to recharge and slip away to sip world-class wines in the beautiful vineyards, wine villages, and wineries surrounding LA.

For a day trip or a long weekend centered around great wine in the Los Angeles area, we head to four acclaimed Southern California wine regions:

  • Santa Barbara Wine Country (Santa Ynez Valley)
  • City of Santa Barbara
  • Temecula Valley

wine tours in los angeles

1. Santa Barbara County Wine Country (Santa Ynez Valley)

Nestled on a pristine stretch of California’s central coastline, just 1 ½ hours north of Los Angles, Santa Barbara County’s Wine Country offers world-class wines in a magnificent setting.

Santa Barbara Wine Country is known for its beautiful vineyards and many wine trails located among the County’s rolling hills and picturesque vineyards. There are over 250 wineries and over 70 different varietals grown in the region.

The transverse nature of the Santa Ynez Valley lends itself to a diverse range of wines produced here. Santa Barbara Wine Country and its acclaimed AVAs keep demonstrating that Santa Barbara is a world-class cool climate wine region and rival to its more well-known cousins up north (Napa & Sonoma).

Santa Barbara has established a reputation for world-class Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah, but you’ll also find deep, rich Bordeaux, Rhône, Spanish and Italian varietals.

The diverse microclimates create 7 distinct certified American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) that are unique in geography, soil structure and climate, creating some of California’s most exciting and delicious wines.

Wine Villages

In addition to the spectacular countryside Vineyards and Wineries, Santa Barbara County offers a wealth of charming towns, each with its unique vibe and urban wineries and tasting rooms. These wine villages are all within a short driving distance of each other:

wine tours in los angeles

Just 80 miles north of Los Angeles you will find one of America’s most beautiful cities and one of my favorite destinations. Known as “America’s Riveria” Santa Barbara offers dazzling beaches, soaring mountains, and a vibrant, unique, and diverse wine and culinary scene.

This urban environment differs from the surrounding vineyards and rolling hills of Santa Ynez Valley Wine Country (Santa Barbara County Wine Country)

With over 30 wine tasting rooms located in the City, Santa Barbara is home to numerous outdoor patio wine hangouts, breweries, shops, art galleries, museums, and street art all within walking distance of each other. Tasting fees vary per winery but are typically $15 – $20 to taste 4 to 5 wines.

There are 3 distinctive wine tasting neighborhoods in Santa Barbara.

wine tours in los angeles

The eclectic Funk Zone offers a hip young vibe to sip wine and craft beer. The Funk Zone is in a repurposed warehouse district adjacent to the Pacific Ocean just off lower State Street (Santa Barbara’s Main Street).

You can choose from over 16 local wineries and tasting rooms along with colorful murals, shops, art galleries, craft breweries, a distillery, and restaurants.

The Presidio Neighborhood is located downtown in the heart of Santa Barbara on State Street. The area is home to wine tasting rooms featuring local award-winning wines, restaurants, museums, art galleries and boutique shops.

Nestled among the historical site of the last of the Spanish fortresses, the Presidio Neighborhood offers the opportunity to explore the history of Santa Barbara, along with experiencing some of the area’s finest food and wine.

3. Temecula Valley

Just a short distance south of` Los Angeles and near San Diego, and Orange County is Southern California’s Temecula Valley Wine Country.  Temecula is known for its laidback atmosphere where you can experience wonderful wines with beautiful views. The wineries include everything from small boutique family-owned wineries to large, sophisticated tasting rooms. The hospitality industry is thriving here, with restaurants, hotels, golf courses, breweries, distilleries and even a casino.

Temecula offers incredible curated activities including wine tours and epic hot air balloon experiences.

This warm region is cooled by Pacific Ocean wind and fog that flows through the “Rainbow Gap” of the Santa Margarita Mountains. The Valley has almost 50 wineries located among the region’s rolling hills and valleys producing a variety of wines, including award-winning and artisan Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. Grapes that originate in warmer climates, like Sangiovese and Tempranillo, also do well.

Old Town Temecula is the historical hub of Temecula Valley. This charming walkable district includes restaurants, shops, beer, and wine tasting rooms, museums, speakeasies, outdoor art, a performance theater, and vibrant nightlife.

4. Malibu Wine Country

Malibu’s close proximity to Los Angeles makes for an easy, memorable and fun day of wine tasting.

Malibu is well known for its beautiful beaches, rocky cliffs, surfers, movie stars  and mansions. But more recently, it  has become known for its celebrated local wineries and tasting rooms.

This wine region is nestled within the Santa Monica Mountains, stretching between the Malibu coast and Mulholland highway to the north. The Malibu AVA is small with only a handful of wineries and tasting rooms to visit.

The wineries and tasting rooms are divided between the better known coastal areas and the picturesque Santa Monica Mountains with stunning canyon and mountain vistas.

Varietals planted are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Mourvedre, Grenache, Viognier, Malbec, Sangiovese, Petit Verdot, Chardonnay and others.

wine tours in los angeles

5. Ojai & Ventura County

Looking for a quiet, laid-back and uncrowded wine tasting experience? Visit Ventura and Ojai, in Ventura County, California.

Tucked away in a hidden valley one hour north of Los Angeles, the quaint town of Ojai lies in the scenic recessess of the Topa Topa Mountains, about 15 miles inland from the Pacific Coast. The Ojai Valley (pronounced Oh-hi) is home to great wine with over 6 tasting rooms and wineries.

Ojai is an easy getaway from Los Angeles and visitors can enjoy a walkable downtown, with shops, restaurants and numerous wine tasting rooms.

In addition to the many downtown wine tasting rooms, there are several wineries in a vineyard setting where you can sip among the vines!

The variety of minerals in the soil and the cold air that blows in from the ocean make the region particularly well suited for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon are also stars here.

Nearby towns of Ventura and Oxnard are  home to numerous boutique family owned wineries that serve delicious wine in an industrial atmosphere.

Where to Drink

Wine tours from los angeles, let us walk you thru informative and exciting wine tours from los angeles.

Photo for: Wine Tours From Los Angeles

Los Angeles is more than just a stunning face on the silver screen. Turns out grapes are being crushed in thriving wineries within the scope of the iconic Hollywood sign in the hills. Watching California wine grapes growing on the vine, talking to wine experts about the terroir, and sampling the wines where they were made is both an informative and sensory experience.

Wine grapes in Southern California

California produces more than 90% of all U.S. wines, and several California wineries are among the best in the world. Although the renowned wine country of the Napa and Sonoma valleys is situated north of San Francisco, and other prominent labels come from 360 wineries in the Central Coast state, some of the Golden State's fine wine-growing regions are further south. Seven American Viticultural Areas or AVAs in Southern California occupy 270,000 acres in Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, and San Diego counties.

Four Generations of Wine Making in Los Angeles

San Antonion Winery, Source: Facebook

Taking a particular wine tour means never leaving Los Angeles. Established in 1917 by an Italian immigrant and still operated by his family, San Antonio Winery is the last remaining winery in downtown Los Angeles. It survived the period of prohibition by making sacramental wine for the Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Tours and tastings take place every afternoon, seven days a week, at a century-old location on Lamar Lane.

Another aspect of Los Angeles City

A private, guided tour of Malibu or Temecula wine starts at any pick-up point in Greater Los Angeles. The five-hour Malibu itinerary is accessible from Wednesday to Sunday, and the eight-hour Temecula ride is available daily. Each tour involves visits to three sampling wineries, a picnic lunch, and a return ride. Upgrade to a limousine accompanied by a sommelier guide upon request. Orange County door-to-door service is also available.

Hidden Wine Tours in Malibu

At 850 acres, the smallest AVA in Southern California is just 30 minutes away from L.A. The beautiful suburban enclave has 26 miles of coastline and surrounding mountains, a property that California grapes love. Book ahead with Secret Malibu Wine Tours to prepare for a guided tour of the Rosenthal and Cielo estates, plus wine tastings. Stop for lunch and add a horse-riding option for a full day out. Tours run all year round.

Discovery of Malibu

Scenic views of the Pacific Ocean and the Malibu hills are part of the experience of riding a luxury coach through Malibu wine country. Visit three nearby tasting rooms, such as SIP Malibu Grapes, Malibu Wines, and Rosenthal Winery, and Cornell Winery with Malibu Discovery Guide. Avoid getting lunch and more champagne, of course. Book ahead to confirm pick-up time and venue.

Malibu Wine Safari or hiking

wine tours in los angeles

Malibu Wine Safaris, Source: Facebook

Malibu Family Wines grow cabernet sauvignon, syrah, and sauvignon blanc grapes on 69 acres in the 1,000-acre Saddlerock Estate. Malibu Wine Safari provides walks and guides tours in an open-air safari vehicle, calling in on the vineyards and local four-legged residents: Catherine Zebra Jones, Barack and Michelle Ollama, Stanley the Giraffe, and other animals retired from Hollywood careers. Arrive independently or book from your suggested partner, Performance Limo LA.

Wine sampling at Queen Mary

And another surprise: the Malibu Family Wines also offers Semler and Saddlerock wine tastings on board the Queen Mary at Long Beach. Arrive separately and take a self-guided tour of the iconic ocean liner, which will be available from 12 p.m. Up to 7:30 p.m. Any day except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day; admission is free after 6 p.m.

Tours of Zuri Wine

Based on family-owned wineries and wine education, Zuri Wine is offering tours from Los Angeles. Take off the L.A. Serving a continental breakfast with mimosas on the Zuri Wine Bus before arrival in Los Olivos and Solvang. Alternatively, board the vintage Vino Train at Los Angeles' historic Union Station for a 12-hour ride along the coast and discover the Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail, featuring wine tastings, food, and jazz.

Gold Coast with Limousines

The rail-limo wine tour begins at Union Station in Los Angeles. Board the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner, which hugs the rails along the Pacific coast to Santa Barbara, where a city car or limo is waiting. Make a day of wine country tasting in Santa Ynez Valley before returning to L.A. via Amtrak or extend a night trip from Paso Robles to Santa Barbara.

La La Tours is proud to have earned Multiple TripAdvisor's Awards and Five Star Reviews at Google.

Jasmine was amazing. I have never booked a personal tour like this before and I was skeptical but was I glad I went ahead with it. Jasmine made our trip very special and memorable. She is very knowledgeable and also very thorough. I enjoyed all the different things she had planned for us based on the interests we have. I highly recommend her to anyone looking for a fun and informational trip to SLO and the surrounding areas.

Jasmine helped us plan for a fun day including wine tastings and sampling other local food at the farmer's market and shops. We visited 3 wineries with different styles of tastings and vibes. We would not have discovered one of our now favorite wineries without her recommendations or tasted the delicious quality local specialties that we did not expect to find in Paso Robles. A wonderful local guide to go to when you visit Paso Robles, especially if you hope to pack more experience than just the wines on your trip.

Dave & Lori H.

FLEXIBLE: Jasmine is an excellent host, very accommodating and flexible with our family. We would highly recommended her.
EXCELLENT INTRODUCTION TO LA: Jasmine provided a great introduction on our first visit to LA. She's friendly, professional, and a great driver in the crazy LA traffic. The tour was a good mix of well known, iconic LA sites and unknown, unexpected places. She was friendly and informative. We'll use her again the next time we visit.

LOS ANGELES IN TWO DAYS: We took a private two day tour with Jasmine and she was excellent. We had a wonderful time and so enjoyed her company. We would highly recommend her!
BOSCH & LA - AWESOME TOUR WITH JASMINE: We did a 5 hour Oh My Bosch private tour with Jasmine. My husband is a big fan of the books and absolutely loved this tour! Jasmine also combined it with details of the history of LA as we were driving and visiting different sites which I loved also. This is a great way to see the city! Jasmine is a wonderful tour guide and I would recommend her tours to anyone visiting LA. We look forward to seeing her for another tour next time we visit.
LA PRIVATE TOUR: My 2 teens and I had the pleasure of spending the day with jasmine on a private LA tour. We had a wonderful day. Jasmine managed to keep my kids attention for the entire time. She was very knowledgeable and explained everything as we went along. Jasmine has a great personality and was just lovely to spend the day with. We would highly recommend her tour!!
TOUR OF LA: We had a twelve hour layover at LAX on our way back from Tahiti. We were looking for something to do and one of the people in our group found LaLa Tours online. Jasmine was very professional and accommodating getting back to us and scheduling a tour of the city. Our plane was delayed but she was still right here waiting for us. She gave us an amazing tour hitting all the highlights and was full of information. She also took us to a market where the food was amazing! I would highly recommend getting Jasmine to show you around LA! LaLa Tours, courteous, friendly, knowledgeable and fun!

GREAT TOUR: We had a private customised tour around LA. Jasmine kept a good pace and we visited a lot of different sites. She was an excellent guide and I have no hesitation in recommending her for any tours you have in LA.

There's nothing like getting a behind-the-scenes look at the winemaking process (while tasting along the way) to hone both your appreciation and your palate. Merriam Vineyards

No. 4: Merriam Vineyards - Healdsburg, California

There are high remarks for organically farmed, estate-centered Merriam Vineyards in Sonoma's Russian River Valley. A seated tasting with a selection of single-vineyard wines is offered daily.

Benziger Family Winery

No. 3: Benziger Family Winery - Glen Ellen, California

Visitors to Benziger Family Winery have five tour and tasting options to choose from. The ultimate California road trip: where to head from San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego

logo

Sun-drenched beaches. Dramatic coastal drives. Rugged mountain ranges. Breathtaking National Parks. A feast of shopping, food and drink. Diverse culture to savour. Iconic cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego. Legendary landmarks that are etched in our memories from classic movies, favourite TV shows, pop songs and much-loved novels. California is a huge state that offers so much to explore – and an epic road trip is the perfect way to do it.

Getting to the west coast has never been easier, you'll be pleased to hear. With daily direct flights on British Airways from Heathrow you could be in Los Angeles, San Francisco, or San Diego before you know it. Hit the road south from the Golden City. Get your motor running and head out on the highway north from America’s Finest City. Go west, my friend, from the City of Angels. The choice is yours.

What's more, hiring a car allows you to enjoy the luxury of driving some of the most beautiful coastal routes, cover huge swathes of this mammoth state, and enjoy the glorious scale of California, all at your own pace.

It’s important to remember the sheer size of California. Get your head around this: the Golden State is even bigger than the UK, so you’ll want to plan your trip in advance to ensure you experience all your must-sees while still having time to chill and get into the carefree California lifestyle.

Your reward will be incredible variety. One morning you could be in a laid-back beach town where surfing is a way of life, and in the evening enjoying sundowners on a rooftop terrace overlooking the Hollywood Hills.

You don't have to stick to the coast, either. From the wine country of Napa and mountains of Yosemite, to the desert landscapes of the Mojave and tranquillity of Lake Tahoe, there are so many diverse regions and breathtaking scenes to explore all in one state.

Your holiday could tick off surfing, wine-tasting, whale-watching, hiking, Michelin-starred meals or street food tacos and amazing museums from your bucket list. The American Dream is out there – so what are you waiting for?

Read on for ideas of where your road trip could take you

Road trips from San Francisco

When you fly into San Francisco, your priority will be to see all the famous sites – such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Painted Ladies, cable cars and more – while getting to know the plethora of exciting neighbourhoods. The city is easy to get around, and day trips to Oakland and Berkeley are worthwhile too.

Ready to hit the open road? You're absolutely spoiled for choice. Head out to Napa, heart of the California wine country, where you’ll find tasting tours and a thriving food scene, or on to nearby Sonoma for boutique wineries.

wine tours in los angeles

While you’re in Northern California, it would be remiss not to experience a National Park or two. Redwood is the eponymous home to some of the oldest and largest trees, while Yosemite boasts waterfalls, canyons, and El Capitan. Whether you're camping onsite or staying in a nearby hotel, you’ll experience the Golden State's wonderfully varied landscape up-close.

Road trips from Los Angeles

From Beverly Hills and Melrose Avenue to Santa Monica and Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles is absolutely crammed with legendary places to visit – and then there are museums, art galleries and the theme parks to experience too. A week is a decent amount of time to see the city while allowing you time to adapt to the more relaxed pace of Angelinos.

When you’re ready to move on, you could head north along the coast to Santa Barbara and then on to Monterey County. Famed for its whale-watching and the jagged cliffs of Big Sur, this part of California starts to look and feel very different.

With multiple direct British Airways flights a day from Heathrow to Los Angeles International Airport, you could be landing in the City of Angels sooner than you think. It’s time to start planning.

Start your holiday of a lifetime with San Diego's own 59-mile scenic drive. This signposted trip takes in panoramic views of the coast, directs you through all the city’s must-sees, including the historic Old Town, and provides plenty of photo-ops along the way.

Then, keep hold of the beach-loving SoCal vibe and take US Route 101, the Pacific Coast Highway, for a jaw-dropping drive along the winding coastline up to Orange County's Huntington Beach – also known as Surf City,  and home to a range of pro-events.

When you’re this close, it makes sense to keep driving north to Los Angeles to soak up the city’s intoxicating blend of Hollywood landmarks, theme parks and luxe shopping, cuisine and nightlife.
