The stars of women's tennis will descend on Beijing for the first time in four years for the 17th edition of the China Open .

It will be the last WTA 1000 on the calendar and will run between September 30th and October 8th, featuring a 64-player singles field. With a prize money pot of $8,127,389, it is one the largest among the tournaments in this category.

The player list at the 2023 China Open in Beijing is headed by the world's top two players namely Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka . The Pole will vacate the No. 1 ranking she has held for the last 75 weeks on Monday after the conclusion of the US Open with Belarus' Sabalenka taking over the reins .

Elena Rybakina , who became the third player to qualify for the 2023 WTA Finals is also in the field. The Kazakh has played the most finals at WTA 1000 level this season (three) and won the most two titles (two), and she'll look for a late-season surge.

Only three of the world's Top 50 players will miss out. Those are Paula Badosa (injured) and the American duo of Danielle Collins and Lauren Davis for undisclosed reasons. While Jennifer Brady and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova will utilize their protected ranking status .

The tournament's defending champion is Naomi Osaka who won the last staging of this tournament before the coronavrus pandemic shut the Chinese borders. WTA Tour announces initial 2023 calendar with no Chinese events

It has been confirmed that the WTA Tour will not stage any events in China during the first part of the 2023 season after the elite women’s tennis circuit confirmed its initial calendar up to the US Open.

Relations between the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and China have been strained following last year’s controversy over Peng Shuai. The Chinese player accused a high-ranking government official of sexual assault, but then disappeared from public view, prompting the WTA Tour to   suspend all tournaments staged in China over concerns around player safety .

WTA suspends China tournaments amid concern for Peng Shuai

The decision hit the tour financially as the lucrative, ten-year deal signed in 2018 to host the WTA Finals in Shenzhen, as well as stage other events in the country, was scrapped, with the 2021 season-ending showpiece played in Guadalajara, Mexico instead. This year no Chinese events were featured in the schedule and the WTA Finals was played in Fort Worth, Texas.

With the first part of the 2023 calendar now having been released, there are once again no events in China listed. However, the WTA has said it is yet to make any decisions on the last portion of the calendar.

There are new additions to this year’s tour, with the new WTA 250 events in Austin, Texas, and Merida, Mexico, both set to take place in February, while the tour says ‘details of the remaining section of the calendar will be communicated in due course’.

Another new event is the United Cup mixed-gender team competition, which will be staged in conjunction with the ATP Tour across the Australian cities of Brisbane, Perth and Sydney.

In terms of regular events, the 2023 schedule will feature seven WTA 1000 tournaments in Dubai, Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, Rome, Montreal and Cincinnati. There will also be at least ten WTA 500 tournaments and 24 250 events, with an increased number of WTA 125 competitions.

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The WTA Tour released its schedule for 2023 through the U.S. Open in September, with no tournaments slated for China yet.

The women’s tennis tour’s announcement of its provisional event dates said: “Details of the remaining section of the calendar will be communicated in due course.”

The season-ending WTA Finals are supposed to be held in Shenzhen, China, through 2030, but were not held at all in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, then were moved to Guadalajara, Mexico, in 2021, and to Fort Worth, Texas, this year.

In an interview with The Associated Press two weeks ago, tour CEO Steve Simon said he does not know where that event will be played in 2023, promising a decision “no later than the end of the first quarter of next year.”

“We hope that that’s where we’re going to be,” he said about Shenzhen, “but, obviously, we have some issues to resolve.”

He named two issues: Peng Shuai’s situation and lingering COVID-19 restrictions.

A year ago, the WTA suspended all of its tournaments in China because of concerns about the safety of Peng, a Grand Slam doubles champion who accused a former government official there of sexual assault. Simon wanted a full and transparent inquiry into her allegations and a chance for the tour to communicate with her - none of which has happened yet.

Peng immediately disappeared from public view, then tried to recant. She doesn’t leave China and was part of carefully orchestrated appearances during the Beijing Olympics in February.

The portion of the calendar released so far includes new tournaments in Austin, Texas, and Merida, Mexico, in February.
